Rab Ne brings cheers to Yash Raj camp
Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 13 Dec 2008 | 3:08 pm Review - Farhan Akhtar's talk show 'Oye! It's Friday'This Friday, Farhan Akhtar's show 'Oye! It's Friday' debuted on television. In essence, 'Oye! It's Friday' has managed to make a decent beginning on the small screen where reality shows have (thankfully) started proving to be a huge challenge to the yawny 'saas-bahu' sagas. Again, 'Oye! It's Friday' is nowhere close to being 'reality' in look and feel but at the least it talks about 'real' stuff around us belonging to the world of entertainment, politics and current affairs. The concept It's the concept of 'Oye! It's Friday' which is its USP. It can't be solely classified as a chat show or a spoof show or a song-n-dance show or a celebrity-host show. It mixes all of this and a lot more in it's one hour duration and though at the end of the first episode (with Hrithik Roshan as the star guest - more about it later!) didn't make a viewer go wow, it at the least had its heart in the right place when it comes to ideation and conceptualization. The show has tried to be genuinely different and new though it would still take at least a couple of episodes more to figure out what it is all about and if it turns further interesting in weeks to come. The host Farhan Akhtar has the charm. He tries to play a natural game here. He has worked on his voice too, something which was critically analyzed in his debut film as an actor. Of course his familiarity with the industry, due to him being a part of it, helps but there is a certain 'I-am-attempting-this-for-the-first-time' feel that one gets from Farhan's body language. However, he is expected to only get better in episodes to come as he gets more and more comfortable in his sometimes-standing-up and sometimes-sitting-down act! The visuals 'Oye! It's Friday' certainly is a glossy affair. Very much in synch with the Friday mood and boasting of a touch of class as well, the sets are just the kind that one expected from a Farhan Akhtar show. Especially impressive is the tunnel through which the stars and the guests and the dancers make an entry, though one expected the props in the prime sitting place to be far glossier! The dancers The show boasts of quite a few female dancers from 'saat samundar paar' and that of course adds to the visuals. To see the pretty, young and sexy girls dancing to Bollywood tunes may not be something unique (we see that in the biggest and the smallest of Bollywood films these days) but for a TV show, it is not a bad deal at all. Especially, when one looks forward to the breaks during the show, because this is the time when the girls make an appearance. The guests The show saw three guests, headed by Hrithik Roshan with song and dance appearances by Neha Dhupia and Hard Kaur. Hrithik certainly deserves 10 on 10 for his appearance since he came across as quite a sport when he took the joke on himself on more than just a couple of instances. The anecdotes he revealed about his growing up years and the camaraderie he shares with Farhan brightened up the show only further. Neha had her moments when she danced to a few songs and though the small stage setting did prove to be a hindrance with regular dance steps not quite helping her cause much; her presence on stage was good enough to have your eyes firmly on screen. This was not the case with Hard Kaur though, who was an unwanted distraction with her strange clothing and hair-do. The jokes Aah, now this is one area where I have complains. Seriously, the jokes were not funny all the time. They ranged from good to average to 'Ok, now should I laugh' kinds! They were original yes, were meant to be PJ's at few places - yes, but still didn't make much of an impact. In fact there was nothing that was exceptional here and the blame lies with the writing which could have been much better. Ok, so we are not looking at senseless ha-ha-hee-hee but at least give us something that indeed is good enough reason to stay home in front of TV on a Friday night! The skits and the spoofs The same holds good for the skits and spoofs. Though they were better than jokes at most of the places, the issue (in some cases) lies with the way they ended. After a very good start, they turned out to be just about average in the end. How one wishes there was more consistency in the mood because the actors didn't really do a bad job. In fact the one on something that went like a pension plan/standard life insurance (or something like that) was in bad taste (Farhan, did you really approve that?), though the Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi 'secrecy spoof' was well thought of. The Magic and the Magik Ok, so we are talking about two kind of 'magic' here - one which was real and the other which was the 'ultimate impact'. There was a segment in the show which showcased some real magic around a stunning beauty getting her clothes changed (4-5 times) in a matter of seconds by a magician (yes, it was all happening on National television). Now this one really made one gaze at the happenings wide mouthed. Terrific! And how about some MAGIK of the overall show, (as the team of Rock On would want to call it)? Well, it is not really magiKal in the true sense since the overall impact created wasn't amazing or out of this world. It was good, certainly different and as mentioned earlier, 'Oye! It's Friday' would require at least a couple of more viewings for an opinion to be formulated. Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 13 Dec 2008 | 12:54 pm "13 years from now, I will watch RNBDJ again" - Audience speaksRab Ne Bana Di Jodi has got a Thumbs Up from the audience. The paying 'junta' has lapped up the films with both hands and the opening has been better than expected. Though it had earlier seemed that terror attack and relatively lesser hype for this Yash Raj production would be a deterrent towards the collections, the film's showing as the first day came to an end has been more or less positive. The film took a much better start than Chak De India [which had seen around 50% collections on the opening day] though it was below ~100% opening of Om Shanti Om [as expected, since it was a Diwali release and came with a much bigger hype]. However, there are two factors that should result in Aditya Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan and Co. grinning from ear to ear: a) The film saw house full sign all over towards the evening and night shows on Friday b) 'Junta Janardhan', the ultimate power, has been unanimously gung-ho about the film. Of course, for some patrons, the film isn't as huge as they thought, but then it has been mainly because of the 'YRF-Adi-SRK coming together' expectations factor which has proven to be the stumbling block. Bollywood Hungama met up some people coming out of theaters on Friday and this is what they had to say about the film: Anupa Abraham (29, Software professional) Really, it didn't quite matter to me if Rab Ne Bana De Jodi was directed by Aditya Chopra or Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Watching a film which has Shah Rukh Khan in the lead is a good enough reason and I am glad that I saw the film on the first day itself. Yes, there were apprehensions since I didn't have much clue about what the film was all about, though I did have a hint around Shah Rukh's character going through a makeover. In the end, I came home smiling because of the heartwarming feel of the film. Anushka is nice but well, I am a Shah Rukh Khan fan and it was his presence that mattered. Vibha Jindal (36, Housewife) My friends dragged me for this. I was saving money for Ghajini but they all insisted that I join them for Rab Ne.... I am now troubled. Why? Because I really loved the film and now would be bringing my husband and two kids as well to watch the film over the weekend. It would turn out to be expensive now but never mind. Ghajini will certainly happen but it's good that I watched Rab Ne... as well. I had a disastrous experience with Yash Raj Films since I had to suffer Aaja Nachle and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag but this was a different ballgame altogether. Shivani Burman (28, Call Center Manager) I had to fight off two restrictions for watching Rab Ne.... I had to take a day off from office and moreover I am due for delivery in a fortnight. My husband ensured that I get the most comfortable sitting for the film. As it is the film is near 3 hours in duration if one includes the interval as well. Thank goodness for the couch facility in my neighborhood multiplex. I felt like a very pregnant Preity Zinta from Salaam Namaste as I demanded nothing but the best throughout my movie watching. My husband may have been doing all the errands for me but I had a gala time with Rab Ne.... Anushka is good but Shah Rukh is sooooo cute, especially in his 'geek' avtar. Bimal Sharma (29, Real Estate Broker) I wonder what prompted Yash Raj Films to release Rab Ne... in December. This one is a core Diwali film. If they would have released it in the festive season, the hype and response to this would have been unprecedented. It is a very good film, if not excellent. Also, it is way ahead of the likes of Golmaal Returns or for that matter even Fashion. As a movie buff, I watched both the films then but I know that if only Rab Ne... would have released then, I would seen this one first. I have freaked out earlier on DDLJ and though I wasn't too fond of Mohabbatein, this one is leagues ahead. Gaurav Middha (26, Investment Banker) Puhleeze, stop giving me 'gyaan' about this 'ordinary' v/s 'extraordinary' sh%^ that is being thrust by the film's PR machinery. At the end of the day, it is yet another regular feel good entertainer. I didn't quite feast on the entire concept of the film. I mean at the end of the day, all this entire make over thing and all is truly filmy. Real life mein aisa kuch possible nahi hota! And this is where the basic pretext of the film, i.e. it being about a common man, goes for a toss. I saw it a time pass flick with no expectations and on those grounds, I was okay about the entire affair. Sahil Sabharwal (32, Travel Consultant) After all the terror attack depression, I HAD to watch something on the big screen. I am a movie buff and was waiting to catch Rab Ne... Last few weeks have been particularly bad since there wasn't anything good to watch at multiplexes. Rab Ne.... has been quite an entertaining watch and the experience was enhanced since I went out with a bunch of 9 odd colleagues. There were a couple of them who aren't really the film buffs but we coaxed them into watching the film. Overall we had a great experience since there were number of 'taali-maar' moments, the kind that kept us all making most of the noise in the auditorium. Kavya Joglekar (42, Boutique owner) Anushka is such a nice pretty looking girl. I guess her girl next door persona is what added to the strength of Rab Ne... Moreover, I like the way she dances. Honestly, even though I don't really miss any Shah Rukh Khan movies, I couldn't resist myself from admiring this new girl for her talent. She will certainly go quite some distance. She is wonderful. Yachna Yadav (23, Engineering student) I had gone with HUGE expectations and though I knew that the film wasn't set on as huge scale as majority of biggies starring Shah Rukh Khan are, I still did expect a grand affair. In a way I am not too pleased with the film's outcome. It was nice but I didn't really get back my expectations worth. I hadn't liked the songs even earlier but had believed that on big screen they would make an impact. The entire parody song had good visuals but overall, it turned out to be just another film, though not THE film I was looking for. Ghajini, where are you? Balasubramaniam Parmeshwaran (33, Businessman) There is no reason why I am not going to watch Rab Ne... again! The combination of Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan was long due and Rab Ne... is a film which is just the right comeback for the trio after Mohabbatein. At the least the three of them have genuinely tried to be different here. Often we have accused this team to have beaten around the same formula and it takes guts to take your movie to a small time setting when all this while they have found reasons to set their feet in Europe. 'Haule Haule' is pretty much the single most reason that I dragged my feet to theaters. Shubhradeep Guha (38, Sales Director) I have only one thing to say - 'Adi, please make more films'. No, I refuse to compare Rab Ne... with his earlier two films, why should I? I would rather watch it as a stand alone film. DDLJ didn't have a predecessor when it released. I have seen Rab Ne... and am sure that it would be counted as one of the better films coming from Yash Raj Films in the current century. Who know, just like DDLJ, 13 years from now I could be venturing into this multiplex again to watch the film? Ok, so it's a far fetched thought in today's '10-shows-a-day' scenario but well, I can still have a dream, right?Source: Indiafm.com Features | 13 Dec 2008 | 12:34 pm 'Bommalattam' - a whodunit that keeps you watchingFilm: 'Bommalattam'; Director: Bharati Raja; Cast: Nana Patekar, Arjun, Kajal; Music: Himesh Reshammiya; Rating: ***Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 13 Dec 2008 | 11:30 am SRK's Rab Ne lures people back to theatres

Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 13 Dec 2008 | 10:42 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about Rab Ne Bana Di JodiTender as that dewdrop that perches on the window- sill after a monsoon shower, and yet as strongly assertive as that bindi that a woman puts on her forehead to declare her marital status Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a curious and compelling mix of fragile and powerful emotions meshed together with a skill and subtlety that suggests the maturation of both the director Aditya Chopra and his leading man Shah Rukh Khan. Indeed, if Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was the consummate boy-meets-girl 'chic' flick, Rab... is a comprehensive and evocative homage to the dreams aspirations loves lies and heartbreaks of the average middleclass couple. Deftly edited (by Ritesh Soni) to imply a deep and indelible link between feelings and time passages, Rab Ne... Exudes an exceptional vigor in portraying, two lives that could do with some of that quality. Vigor is vigorously absent in our working-class hero Surinder Sahni's life. We enter his bleak existence as he brings home a bride into his Amritsar neighbourhood filled with gawking mohallah -wallahs, all curious to know why Suri went to attend a marriage and came back with the bride. It's a long story. Aditya Chopra , in no hurry to make his point, captures the coming together of two very incompatible people (couldn't get any more incompatible than SRK and the confident debutante, could it?) with an elegance, charm, wit and warmth which one would expect to have gone with the wimp....and I do mean the wimp. Wonderfully wimpy in his demeanour, Shah Rukh invents two different body languages the slouch and the swagger, to bring out the yin and yang aspects of the Great Indian Middleclass Dream. One of the questions, that bothers the wimpy Amol Palekar-meets-Vinay Pathak hero is what does an Indian girl want? Diamonds, a Swiss account, a Japanese honeymoon? "Just a man who loves her to death," sighs Suri's new bride. But she also adds she has none to give. And you wonder, are working-class dreams really that simple? Aditya Chopra keeps them uncluttered and largely cleaned-out of unnecessary complications. In a playing-time of 1 hour and 40 minutes, there are just two main characters, a muted uncomplaining repressed besotted working-class husband and his distressed but dignified wife, occupying a house in Amritsar that's perfectly lit up. And by perfection we don't mean the perfection of cinema. The kitchen, the two bedrooms upstairs and downstairs (the couple stays separately under the same roof until their hearts collide on the dance floor) the portico and the acres surrounding the protagonists convey a feeling of lives that have been around long before Ravi K Chandran's supple camera was set up. Yes, you connect instantaneously and permanently with this warmly-written saga of a couple that discovers love in the strangest of places... the dance floor, for example, where Suri invents a remarkably hip-and-swaggering duplicate Raj, a doppelganger that's the opposite of Suri himself, and sweeps his own wife off her feet. The comic drama that ensues is both engaging and heartbreaking. In portraying the working-class underdog and his larger-than-life double Shah Rukh Khan faces the greatest challenge of his career. How to keep the two characters apart without making them appear black and white? The imaginary guy on the dance floor Raj, a sleaze ball with two left feet, transforms gradually into an emotional human being as lonely as our poor Surinder. They both want to be loved. Awwww! Shah Rukh plays his poignant working-class protagonist without making him look pitiable. The invented character Raj (a spoofy but not synthetic version of the flamboyant Raj from Dilwale Dulhaniya....) is even tougher to play. You can't do underdog and super-hero without making both appear caricature. Shah Rukh manages to keep his feet in two boats without rocking either. And yet, rocking all the way. Often he just lets his screen-wife, the super-confident down-to-earth debutante Anushka Sharma take over the screen. This time Shah Rukh is an attentive listener. He listens to the call of the heart and transmits the pain of love to the audience with a serious scarcity of the strenuous. The third skilled performance comes from Vinay Pathak as Shah Rukh's emotionally unabashed best friend who conveniently, is a beautician (blissfully not gay) who helps Suri transform into Raj at the flick of a switch. There's no denying the fact that the director has chosen well. And we don't mean just the actors. A large portion of the narrative leaves the couple in the sprawling Amritsar home to find their bearings, and one another. It's these scenes that show the director's subtle skill at portraying lives that long for love and companionship but don't know how to get there. There are vignettes from a middleclass marriage like the sequence where the wife eager to fulfill her kitchen duties, serves Suri biryani. But Suri, masquerading as Raj, has gorged earlier during the evening on paani-puris with his wife. She can be honest about her full appetite. He can't. The dishonesty that colours and prejudices any intimate relationship is dealt with such sincerity and honesty you wonder if the institution of marriage was invented as a pretext for cinema such as this.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 13 Dec 2008 | 10:31 am Eesha Koppikhar on FHM'Bollywood's Sweetheart' screams the headlines of the latest edition of the super glossy and super sexy magazine FHM. Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 13 Dec 2008 | 9:38 am CC2C - Biggest Bollywood crossover flick?Click above for more movie stills Is Chandni Chowk to China the biggest film of an international scale that Bollywood has seen in the recent times? Will it be THE crossover film coming out of our country? If the theatrical promo of this Nikhil Advani directed film is any indication, this seems to be pretty much the case. Unveiled over the weekend gone by, the theatrical promo stuns from beginning till the end as it is truly grandiose and spectacular. Says a source close to the film, "Nikhil (Advani) has gone all out in making sure that Chandni Chowk to China lives up to the mammoth expectations that people have from this Akshay Kumar starrer. The film is being pitched as a film that takes inspiration from Akshay's real life journey from being a chef to a superstar. Due to this the stakes are high and audience has to be presented with a truly grand affair that justifies the claims that have been made." So what one gets is not just an ample dose of Akshay Kumar as he gets into the martial art act but also the kind of visuals that have been associated with Chinese classics such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. "The martial arts have to be seen to be believed. Also, a fortune has been spent on the special effects to make the film look world class. You have a look at the theatrical promo and you would get an idea for yourself that how spectacular the setting of the film has been. Also, what sets apart Chandni Chowk to China from any other routine masala flick is that it is not merely an action comedy but has a deeper storyline to it. There are some Chinese legends that have been unearthed in the film and Akshay Kumar unwittingly becomes a part of them", adds the source. With Deepika Padukone in a double role and music, which seems all set to be a chartbuster, Chandni Chowk to China is all set to be the biggie which would change the fortunes of Bollywood as it enters into 2009.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 13 Dec 2008 | 9:20 am Shah Rukh's 'Rab Ne...' finally brings cheer to Yash Raj FilmsMumbai is still not in a cinema-going mood after the terror strikes, but movie buffs - and loyal Shah Rukh Khan fans to be precise - could not have given Yash Raj Films' much-awaited movie 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' a miss. Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 12 Dec 2008 | 5:54 pm Rab Ne Bana De Jodi sweeps the nationDownload Rab Ne... wallpapers Yash Raj Films reeling under the impact of a series of setbacks in 2007-2008 is all set to make a grand comeback with his latest big-time release Rab Ne Bana De Jodi. In spite of the terror attacks two weeks ago and the downward curve in Yash Raj's recent image, the film had a massive opening which is expected to get better over the weekend and past it. Roshan Singh a leading exhibitor of Bihar sums up the unexpected euphoria surrounding the latest Shah Rukh Khan starrer. "It's opened to full houses, the best opening I've had for a Yash Raj Film in the last two years. I should know, because my theatre screens all the Yash Raj films in Patna. People love the film. Nobody expected Rab Ne... to be such a sweet love story. Shah Rukh as an ordinary small- town guy proves he is truly the king. And the new girl Anushka is a revelation." What's working for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the working-class ambience. The film delineates the dreams and aspirations of ordinary people. "And the whole idea of putting the couple into a dance reality-show is a stroke of genius. Audiences immediately identify and connect with this new medium of getting famous overnight," says Roshan Singh. In Mumbai, the responses on Friday ranged from exceptional to very very good. Said the Singh Is Kinng producer Vipul Shah, "I'm not surprised by the warm welcome that the film has got. After 26/11 Mumbai needed a feel good film. And the Shah Rukh-Aditya Chopra combination after eight years....Their last film together was Mohabbatein. I was really looking forward to the film. We don't get a film from the team that gave us Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge that easily." With the heartening opening of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi the industry reeling under the twin impact of a recession and 26/11 can breathe easy. The best reaction to the film's opening came from film's director Aditya Chopra and leading man Shah Rukh Khan's best friend Karan Johar in New York. "Rab Ne Bana Di will prove once and for all that the Adi-Shah Rukh jodi is god sent." Don't 'Rab' that combo the wrong way.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 12 Dec 2008 | 4:10 pm Subhash K. Jha speaks about MaharathiFilms based on celebrated plays, from B R Chopra's Ittefaq to Vipul Shah's Aankhen have an oppressively stagey air to them that's hard to get rid of. Maharathi manages to liberate itself from the climate of the cloistered. It is about a rich old cantankerous tycoon (Naseeruddin Shah), his gold-digging wife (Neha Dhupia) and their suspicious charlatan of a chauffeur (Paresh Rawal). It manages to rise above the stagey syndrome, thanks mainly to a stream of self-assured actors who inhabit the deeply-lit ebony-oriented chambers where the drama of marital betrayal, infidelity, suicide and avarice unfolds with reasonable fluency. What ails Maharathi is its lack of mobility in narration. You really can't take a play too far away from the sets. The drama is not about locations but impulses. Those, the characters bring out with a feisty relish, making the diabolic plot both a sign of our greedy times and a culture-unspecific mirror of individual bitterness and guilt. Of the cast Naseeruddin Shah is understandably the best. As the retired film producer with a penchant for picking the wrong protégés now married to a woman who wants him dead. Naseer is unsurpassably funny and tragic, imbuing the character with both self-deprecating humour and a malicious self-regard. Naseer's character's suicide mid-way signals the film's downslide. The plot is now left to Paresh and Dhupia, both proficient in understanding their roles. Neha Dhupia has now made a career of playing sultry vixenish sirens in alternate cinema. She excels in the part with her eyes closed. Paresh's attempts to sound urban and 'cool' are a little strained. He's slightly too old to play the cocky driver who first teams up with the old man and then his sultry wife, and represents the kind of urban youth who would go anywhere that money takes him. Om Puri comes in late. That's something the audience can't afford to do. Maharathi isn't as gripping as you would like a film of this genre to be. But the director knows how to create conflict and friction among the characters without losing the underbelly of humour that divides the 'mean' from the boys.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 12 Dec 2008 | 3:27 pm Jumping Jack and Dream Girl come together to judge dance based showReality T.V. has caught on in a big way and every actor worth his salt is seen on T.V. these days either as a host or as a participant or as special guests. While most of the current generation actors have made an appearance at least once on reality shows, even the yesteryear actors are not far behind. The latest to join the reality T.V. bandwagon are none other than 'Jumping Jack' Jeetendra and 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini. The duo would be seen as judges on a new dance based show called 'Dancing Queen' which goes on air tonight on COLORS. The show would feature starlets like Dippsshikha, Sanober Kabir, Meghna Naidu, Sambhavna Seth and Mink showing off their moves and competing for the coveted title. However, the highlight continues to be the coming together of Jeetendra and Hema Malini who will be seen together on the small screen after sharing screen space in films like Dulhan, Gehri Chaal, Khushboo etc Considering it's a dance based show, there couldn't have been two better people than Jeetuji and Hemaji as judges. While the former is known for his trademark style of dancing, the latter is a trained Bharat Natyam dancer, having performed at countless stage shows. Surely the duo knows a thing or two about dancing! The inaugural show would also have the gorgeous Deepika Padukone as a special celebrity judge. Deepika would be there to promote her forthcoming flick Chandni Chowk To China. To catch all the fun and action don't miss tuning into 'Dancing Queen' only on COLORS at 10 PM IST tonight.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 12 Dec 2008 | 3:11 pm Slumdog Millionaire bags Golden Globe nominationClick above for more movie stills Danny Boyle's much talked about and much appreciated drama Slumdog Millionaire has been nominated for Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globe awards.
