Subhash K. Jha speaks about Maharathi

Films based on celebrated plays, from B R Chopra's Ittefaq to Vipul Shah's Aankhen have an oppressively stagey air to them that's hard to get rid of. Maharathi manages to liberate itself from the climate of the cloistered. It is about a rich old cantankerous tycoon (Naseeruddin Shah), his gold-digging wife (Neha Dhupia) and their suspicious charlatan of a chauffeur (Paresh Rawal). It manages to rise above the stagey syndrome, thanks mainly to a stream of self-assured actors who inhabit the deeply-lit ebony-oriented chambers where the drama of marital betrayal, infidelity, suicide and avarice unfolds with reasonable fluency. What ails Maharathi is its lack of mobility in narration. You really can't take a play too far away from the sets. The drama is not about locations but impulses. Those, the characters bring out with a feisty relish, making the diabolic plot both a sign of our greedy times and a culture-unspecific mirror of individual bitterness and guilt. Of the cast Naseeruddin Shah is understandably the best. As the retired film producer with a penchant for picking the wrong protégés now married to a woman who wants him dead. Naseer is unsurpassably funny and tragic, imbuing the character with both self-deprecating humour and a malicious self-regard. Naseer's character's suicide mid-way signals the film's downslide. The plot is now left to Paresh and Dhupia, both proficient in understanding their roles. Neha Dhupia has now made a career of playing sultry vixenish sirens in alternate cinema. She excels in the part with her eyes closed. Paresh's attempts to sound urban and 'cool' are a little strained. He's slightly too old to play the cocky driver who first teams up with the old man and then his sultry wife, and represents the kind of urban youth who would go anywhere that money takes him. Om Puri comes in late. That's something the audience can't afford to do. Maharathi isn't as gripping as you would like a film of this genre to be. But the director knows how to create conflict and friction among the characters without losing the underbelly of humour that divides the 'mean' from the boys.

Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India? Indian music artistes respond

Ever since 26/11, sections of Bollywood have been campaigning to keep Pakistani artistes out of India and Mumbai. Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's multi-city tour this month was abruptly cancelled, leaving the musician who has been to India, repeatedly dazed and hurt. But the ban-the-Paki brigade is relentless. Some feel this is just a ploy by an under-employed lazy brood of Bolly entertainers to gain advantage in a market, that's fuelled by talent regardless of where it comes from. Adnan Sami recalls an amusing incident. On a flight from Karachi to Mumbai he spotted a Bollywood singer who had tirelessly tried to ban Adnan in Mumbai. Interestingly, a lot of musicians failed to reply to the survey. Maybe they were afraid to face the music. Shaan: "A ban is harsh and against the creative tenets of music. Proper paper work and a work permit visa should be adhered to. Rules will have to be respected by all. Artistes like Ghulam Ali Saab are legends who should be adored and revered". Shekhar (Vishal-Shekhar): "Instead of wasting time on banning Pakistani musicians, we should look into improving the conditions for our own musicians. Musicians are musicians. Whether they're Indian, Pakistani or British doesn't matter. It would be really stupid to ban Pakistani singers from performing in India. Just as Indian artistes cannot be blamed for terrorism in Pakistan, Pakistani artistes cannot be blamed for terrorism in India." Sunidhi Chauhan: "No comments" Alka Yagnik: "No, the artiste in me says that it's not right to ban a great artiste like Ghulam Ali on the basis of his kaum." Babul Supriyo: "This isn't an easy question to answer. We artistes, regardless of our nationality, are for the people and by the people, and of the people. Our audience liked a few Pakistani artistes and made them overnight stars, much bigger than in their own country. I guess that's why our entrepreneurs felt inclined to use their talents. We can't blame music companies alone for promoting Pakistanis. We have to assume collective responsibility for it. Let's have a concert of Pakistani musicians and singers and throw it open to the Indian audience. Banning is not a solution." Adnan Sami: "Should America ban Canadian and British musicians? Do we buy music according to caste creed or nationality or because we love music per se? We only spread love and harmony through our music. Whatever happened to the belief that music has no boundaries? Instead of wasting time jumping on the 'banned' wagon musicians should just concentrate on creating good music. And by the way, why just Pakistani musicians? Why not ban kebabs and cuisine from across the border?" Kumar Sanu: "The Pakistani musicians are getting their name and fame in India. While the Pakistan's government allows their musicians to come to India, our musicians are not allowed to go there. We must stop them." Abhijeet Sawant: "Why shouldn't we ban Pakistani musicians? We all respect the Pakistani people but we need to protest against their government. We can't do anything that would have a negative impact on our country. We respect them but not more than our own country. I don't think we should show any Pakistani on Indian television." Farhan Akhtar: "It's not right to ban a musician like Ghulam Ali. He's an artiste and he has nothing to do with what's happening. Such knee-jerk reactions are detrimental to the future." Aadesh Shrivastava: "I've no objection to Pakistani artistes coming to India. But they should be worth it. I'm a great fan of Raahat Ali, Abida Parveen and Ghulam Ali Saab and when Ghulam Ali Saab was prevented from coming to Mumbai, I was greatly pained, because he has nothing to do with what happened to Mumbai. However, has he bothered to make one statement against the 26/11 attacks? Considering how welcoming we've always been, it seems only right for someone like Ghulam Ali Saab to speak out against terrorism. We always extend the utmost hospitality to Pakistani artistes. But they should also learn to appreciate what we do for them. So many musicians and comedians were nobodies back home. We made them celebrities in Mumbai. Who knew Adnan Sami before he came to Mumbai? All I say is, when they come here, they must have the proper respect for our hospitality and work permit. When I recorded in the US with Wyclef Jean, I not only had the relevant papers, I also paid taxes over there. Do the Pakistani artistes in India follow these basic rules?" Gulzar: "Let's not make a larger issue of a very specific and critical situation. Mumbai has been through a trauma. And there was no need for Ghulam Ali Saab to choose this time to perform in Mumbai and other cities in India. This is no time for events and celebrations. He's a regular visitor to our country and more than welcome during normal times." Pritam Chakraborty: "No, musicians from Pakistan should not be banned in our country. I am both angry and sad for the 26/11 attack, and upset that the whole thing originated on Pakistani soil. But that's politics and has nothing to do with music. Musicians all over the world have no caste creed or religion. As a knee-jerk reaction, we should not ban Pak singers from performing here. The problem lies in politics not music."

"I play Sunita, a medical student with brain study as her special subject" - Jiah Khan

Download image as wallpaper 'Slim, sexy and slick' is how she was known worldwide for her portrayal in her debut film Nishabd. So if you've made up your mind to see the most desirable single woman again with minimal outfits in Ghajini, don't be shocked after you read this interview. The new 'wow' babe of Bollywood is on cloud nine at the moment, after having worked with Amitabh Bachchan in her first film and with the 'Perfectionist' Aamir Khan in her second. But what makes her special is the fact that she's also the smartest actress and comes across as the pluckiest with a dry wit to match. Bold, confident and raring to go, she is one Khan who stands out from the rest of the Khans in the industry. In one of the longest interviews that she has ever given, Jiah Khan talks to Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel about her next release Ghajini, how she landed up in the film, her tough times shooting the film, the research which went into her role, why she thinks that this Aamir starrer will be her first big commercial success, and of course, her views after viewing Aamir's fit physique...all this and more in this exclusive interview: Jiah, to start with, I can't help but start this interview by asking you how do you express your anger or emotion towards the Mumbai terror attack last month? It is so depressing. I feel sad that we call ourselves civilians and yet we can't be civil to each other. Religion is turning out to be a huge hurdle now and what has been considered to be so personal and sacred is now being used to destroy humanity in the name of religion. All this is really disturbing and I hope it comes to an end someday. When you work with such an experienced bunch of actors, you tend to perform much better and get your work finished much faster Ever since the common man has heard about Ghajini's first look, the promos and the songs, the only thing they haven't heard about is Jiah Khan. What say? I'd like to say that Jiah Khan does exist in Ghajini (laughs). It's up to Aamir Khan and the producers of Ghajini and the way they want to publicize the film. What they've done with my role and my image is going to be a big surprise. But why they've kept me out of the promos is something you'll have to ask the producers. Your fascination with the letter 'A' is also being accounted for, Amitabh to Aamir…two of the best in the business. When do you alphabetically move forward on the costar's list? Wow! That's a good observation. I think I'm very lucky. But eventually all is in God's hands and I hope it keeps on going this way. For Aamir to hold my hand in each scene and then take me through the scenes by doing rehearsals only to see which scene fits perfect was a learning experience Comparisons are bound to happen when you work with two perfectionist actors like the Big B and Aamir. Any interesting observations? They both are very experienced as we all know. And when you work with such an experienced bunch of actors, you tend to perform much better and get your work finished much faster. As individuals they're extremely different. The way they communicate with their co-actors is also very different. I got to learn a lot from both of them and it feels as if I am ten films old now. All actors say that they've learnt a lot from their co-actors. We want to know what exactly you have learnt. My scenes in Ghajini are like on the edge and dramatic scenes. As far as acting goes, it was far simpler to do a Nishabd than to be doing Ghajini. To be working with Aamir Khan and then shouting at him is pretty hard, which Aamir helped me with eventually. For Aamir to hold my hand in each scene and then take me through the scenes by doing rehearsals only to see which scene fits perfect was a learning experience. Right now I'm learning how to deal with different characters and different emotions. A director will only go to an actor when he knows that he is talented and experienced and can give box office success. With no experience behind you, how did the producers and directors came knocking on your door for Ghajini? I'd like to think it's because of my talent. You missed that out. If you see, both Nishabd and my role in Ghajini aren't glamorous. Both are performance based roles. When you're a part of a Bollywood film industry, luck has a lot of role to play. It's good to be doing a performance oriented role, where you concentrate less on what lip stick shades you're wearing. When the switch is on and you're at the right place, it means your time is right. I guess the producers and the directors came at the right time (laughs) It's good to be doing a performance oriented role, where you concentrate less on what lip stick shades you're wearing So how did the bell ring on your door? I was approached by the producer where he handed me the copy of the original South Indian film. Aamir was on board then. So, of course that had to be accounted for. Then, I had to audition for my role which took very long. Mentally, it was quite draining to figure out whether I was in or out. For me, being in the film was like a major turning point in my career. Within two weeks of the audition, they finally decided to cast me for the role. I was over the moon. I have to ask you the cliched, 'what role do you play in the film' question. (Laughs) I play Sunita in the film who is a medical student with brain study as her special subject. She tries and case studies Aamir Khan's character and then how she gets to know about his personal vendetta and becomes involved in it, is what my role is in Ghajini. Is your voice being dubbed in Ghajini? No it's not dubbed. It's my original voice. Everything is sync sound. Aamir Khan being a perfectionist wouldn't ok my sound being dubbed. When you are performing with Aamir Khan or Amitabh Bachchan. For instance, you cannot give many retakes. Hence, the crew started calling me a 'one-take actress' Was filming for Ghajini an uphill climb? There was a lot of pressure because when you are performing with Aamir Khan or Amitabh Bachchan. For instance, you cannot give many retakes. At the back of your head you know that if you don't get it right quickly, you'll tire them out and you don't want to be doing that. But to your surprise and mine, the crew started calling me a 'one-take actress'. There were some extremely intense scenes where it was so draining and that's when Aamir lend me a helping hand. The news circulating right now in the media is that Aamir Khan is not really happy with the way Ghajini has shaped up. Have you heard the same? I have no idea about what you're saying and thus cannot comment on your question. With Nishabd not working well for you, are you looking forward to touch your first commercial success with Ghajini? I'd like to believe that, definitely. Ghajini is a commercial film unlike Nishabd but at the same time it is a thriller too. My portions in the film are very dramatic. The part of the film in which I am in, is where the thriller element comes in play. I hope Ghajini turns out to be like your question. The part of the film in which I am in, is where the thriller element comes in play What went into the research of your character? And any memorable sequence you can trace back? Being a medical student, there were a lot of technical terms I had to be familiar with. Also the pronunciations had to be perfect. The research is one of the hardest things that I've done in my entire life. There was one sequence where I had to run with Aamir Khan on a busy Mumbai road with thousands of onlookers and mad traffic. Of course, with Aamir Khan being there, such scene had to happen but I was shocked to see the stampede. I thought that the crowd would all pounce on us but luckily I am alive! (laughs) Do you share any screen space with Asin? No I don't. Asin is in the first half of the film whereas I come in after the intermission. From Ramu to Murugadoss, both have made films in the South. How was it working with Murugadoss? I am the biggest fan of Murugadoss. He is definitely one of my favourite directors, though I've only worked with Ram Gopal Varma. He is very adorable and one of the funniest members on and off the sets. He is very light hearted and a true perfectionist. So if my performances get appreciated in Ghajini, credit has to go to Murugadoss. I was on the sets passing him, while he was in his boxer shorts shooting a scene. I actually stopped and couldn't breathe Your skimpy outfits made you look super sexy in your debut film. What kind of outfits are we going to see you in Ghajini? (Laughs) A complete opposite. I am covered up from head to toe. So even if I wanted to show a little bit of skin, Aamir and Murgadoss would cover me up. Do you think after what's happened on November 26, Ghajini will attract crowds in theatres? The whole idea of me joining the Bollywood industry was that films have always been an outlet for me and the people. We go and see a film to get away from the harsh realities of day to day life. I hope Ghajini continues to do exactly that and entertain the audiences. Go and see Ghajini because it is a fabulous film with me, Aamir and Asin. We know that Aamir doesn't do a lot of commercial films. For that reason one should go and watch Ghajini. A very important question coming your way. What say about Aamir's never before seen slick and sexy physique? You know what; I was on the sets passing him, while he was in his boxer shorts shooting a scene. I actually stopped and couldn't breathe. He looked amazing. I don't know how he came up with such a physique but one thing is certain, that, it is going to melt a many.

"I'm a sucker for pain and agony" - John Abraham

John Abraham talks about his physique & remedy for homesickness after 3 months of shooting in Philadelphia for New York Correct me if I'm wrong, but the film is called New York. Then why were you shooting it in Philadelphia? Because the topography is similar. A lot of films located in New York are actually shot in Philadelphia. I was shooting for three long months and if it wasn't for my parents, brother and sister-in-law and Bipasha visiting, I'd have gone crazy. When they all came to see me, I stopped feeling homesick. I was away for so long, sometimes when I woke up, I forgot where I was. Before Philadelphia I was in Miami shooting for Dostana for three months. I was shooting for three long months and if it wasn't for my parents, brother and sister-in-law and Bipasha visiting, I'd have gone crazy Homesick? I love Phili. The hotel had become a home. Now I go to Boston for Abbas Tyrewala's film where star with Abbas' wife Pakhi. She's perfect for the part. When I'm away, what I miss most is the ghar ka khana. My parents had come over. But I wouldn't let my mom cook here. No way. I pampered her. Looked after her like a little baby. That's what one is supposed to do with one's parents especially when they get old, no? They need clean healthy air. I think I'll take them to Boston too. Dad is an architect so he loves to check out the buildings and architecture. But before Boston, I come back to Mumbai to do a film called Hook Ya Crook with David Dhawan written by Rensil D'Silva. It's not a typical David Dhawan comedy. We're both excited like two children. You're a good son. I'd really want to believe I'm a good son. How was the shooting in Philadelphia? Gruelling but very satisfying. I shot the most emotionally and physically exhausting scenes of my life. Frankly, I haven't done an action film since Dhoom. It's a genre I really enjoy. This film New York that I'm doing has very effective action. I not only had a lot of running around to do. But I enjoyed myself. At this point of my career I just want to push myself beyond the limits. By wearing the briefest and briefs and giving an interview on why you wore it? Oh that was an endorsement for Dostana. And besides I'm never ashamed of talking about my body. Though at times I do feel like a meat shop. So why go on and on about your body? I am proud of my physique. But I feel I'm also good with emotions. In fact I perform the best when I'm unhappy. I function best when in angst. I am proud of my physique. But I feel I'm also good with emotions New York is your second film with Kabir Khan? I loved doing Kabul Express with Kabir. I loved shooting in Afghanistan right in the midst of Taliban. Now I'd love to shoot in Iraq. I'm a sucker for pain and agony. I'd love to shoot in Iran. My grandfather was from Iran. My mother's cousins are in Iran. You collaborate well with your directors these days? Yes, I'm equally at home with someone as commercial as David Dhawan and as niche as Nagesh Kukunoor. I believe as much in my directors as they believe in me. You may be right when you say I was the outsider when I did Dostana with Karan Johar. But it took me no time to settle in. Karan is a fair person. As for Abhishek, he's no co-star or colleague. He's a friend. I dote on him. I love him to death. We never compete. We complement each other in Dostana. We share a great chemistry. Abhishek and I are a couple in the film. Yes, so we've been told. Let me ask you a 'straight' question. Do you think Indian audiences are ready for gay jokes? I'll give you a 'straight' answer. People laughed at the Kantaben track in Kal Ho Naa Ho. It was very essential for us in Dostana to not take advantage of a certain sensibility and project that as a caricutural as a joke. We've succeeded in doing that in Dostana. Happy to be a gay icon? I've been told that. And I accept it very graciously. But women have reacted as strongly to me in Dostana as men. Some have reacted to the sensuality others to the fitness. But everyone has a query about my body. Sometime I feel I belong to a meat shop. I really am not comfortable talking constantly about my anatomy. Very often I don't know how to react. Initially it was fun to be regarded as a body-beautiful. I wonder how audiences will react to my physicality in my next release Aashayein where I've lost 30 pounds. No stripping in that? None whatsoever. Not that I believe that if you show your body you can't act properly. I really like fielding questions on food, diet and other clichés on health. I always advise people to be clean in body, mind and environment. Neil Nitin Mukesh who's shooting with you in Philadelphia has great respect for you? He's like my younger brother. I love him for the fact that he dotes on his parents. He's a wonderful kid with a great future. He's a simple and clean. We spend a lot of time together. Out there you've no choice. You have a point. Deepa Mehta's Luna with Rachel Weisz is off. So I got to know from your article. Deepa and I haven't spoken about it. As for Kamagatamaru I'd still be willing to play the other lead because it's as important as Akshay Kumar's role. It's always a pleasure working with Akshay. I'm very happy for him. He's a very positive person. We get along beautifully. Why the delay in the release of Aashayein? I think some negotiations are going on. Percept has now decided to release it around December. Aashayein is a beautiful film and Nagesh is great storyteller. What else have you signed? Only Abbas Tyrewala's film. Beyond that I haven't really opened my accounts book, I'm happy doing films I'm completely convinced about. I'd love to work with Anurag Kashyap again. I can talk to him for hours. Like me, he's happy doing his own thing. I'm an off-roader while other actors are on the highway. Do you miss home when you're away? I miss the people though not the city. I'm happy wherever I am as long as my work goes well. But I like to be in Mumbai, though not in the rains. I believe Mumbai should have rains. But we don't know how to cope with it. We don't have a civic sense. We Mumbaikars have it in us to be an international city. When I travel abroad I wonder why we can't be like the other big cities of the world.

"My initiative is for the safeguard of children" - Farah Khan

While it is common knowledge by now that post Mumbai terror attack, Farah Khan and the Save Versova Beach Association are putting together a security model for two streets in Versova comprising of 22 societies, the choreographer/director reveals that she took this step for the safety of children. "On the night of Mumbai attack, just imagine what could have we done had the terrorists attacked us and our children? When we ourselves were so panicky about the situation, how could we have expected to keep the young ones calm? No one had a clue around what to do and that set me thinking that the least we could do to safeguard our children is get an initiative kick started where each of us, whether young or old, support the other in dealing with a disaster situation", states Farah Khan who is making sure that this drive doesn't dry down in days to come. This is the reason why apart from setting high-tech equipments/mechanism like CCTV cameras, patrolling jeeps with guards at night and personalized fire-fighting units, Farah is also aiming for children being trained on administrating first aid in case of any mishaps. "Frankly, even I don't know how to administer basic first aid, so how could children be expected to do that? This is why we would be having a camp this week where children would be taught these basic things", says Farah. She insists that no one from the society is considering this as a celebrity initiative. "Yahan koyi celebrity vagairah ka matlab nahi hai. Most of the people belong to middle class and we all have to come together to ensure our own safety. I alone can't do anything and we need to have experts in different fields to educate us on everything related to disaster management. Thankfully, we have people amongst us who in spite of their daily jobs to do are still coming ahead in driving this initiative forward." On a concluding note, Farah says, "We have just started off and have some way to go. This has begun with a group of societies but won't it be great if other societies too learn from this drive and even contribute to it? The farthest this initiative spreads, the happier I would be with the success of the program. Remember, we can't be dependent upon outsiders to save us all the time; let's take steps to look after our own self first."

Jugal Hansraj to direct Uday Chopra and Priyanka Chopra for YRF

Jugal Hansraj's first directorial venture Roadside Romeo may not have found many takers at the B.O. However, Yash Raj Films (producers of Roadside Romeo) seem to have their faith instilled in Jugal, who would be directing yet another film for the country's premiere production house. Jugal's next directorial venture brings together a rather unusual pairing of actors Uday Chopra and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. The film is expected to go on floors early next year (2009) and well, it would be interesting to see the onscreen chemistry between Uday and Priyanka.
