"Some of my bad films became successful" - Neha Dhupia

Download image as wallpaper Director Shivam Nair didn't quite have a good start to his career as a Bollywood director; his debut flick Ahista Ahista which starred Abhay Deol disappeared from the screens in quick time despite having one of the best scores created by Himesh Reshammiya. Now after a two year break, the film maker is back with Maharathi. Though in terms of genre, the film sees a marked difference for Shivam who moves from being at the helm of an emotional love story to a thriller; wasn't Neha Dhupia worried that Shivam's first film wasn't quite a success? "Regardless of its box office performance, I honestly thought that Ahista Ahista was a really nice movie. In the end, commercial success is always not the right parameter to judge a film. Sometimes big movies are bad and they turn out to be such successes while vice versa may not always be true", Neha defends her director here. "Shivam is very talented and the other day when I was having a conversation with him, he candidly confessed that he had a different feeling this time around when compared to Ahista Ahista. Here he could feel a certain positive energy around the film as it came closer to release. He said that the buzz was just missing from Ahista Ahista but in case of Maharathi that was not the case", Neha talks about the movie in a positive tone. How about the kind of vibes that she herself is getting? "I am a getting a real great vibe and truly believe that Maharathi would be acclaimed both critically and commercially", is Neha's quick response. However, she goes on to add, "But then honestly, after working on a film for so many months, you tend to loose perspective about it. Moreover, you can't always rely upon people around you who give you feedback because they may not give the true picture. You don't know whether they are honest or not. The way a mother would never find fault in her own child, the same happens in case of an actor talking about his/her own film. It has happened to me too." Really? Laughs Neha, "Yeah, you know some of my films have been really-really good and I was very positive about them but they failed. On the other hand one or two were so bad and I didn't expect them to run but they became successful! So you know, it is very difficult to judge and it's best to leave it to the audience to decide."

Rock On bags 2 prestigious awards

Come January and the season of film awards starts with one award ceremony after the other. One of the prime contenders for many major awards this year is Excel Entertainment and Big Pictures' Rock On. In fact, even before the actual awards season could head start, Rock On has started rocking in its true sense. After receiving many accolades, proud producers Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar and Big Pictures have got another feather to add in their already full hats. Recently the movie received two eminent awards; Anand Lok Star Puraskar for 'Best Film' in Kolkata and the 'Path-breaking Film of the Year' at the Star Sabse Favourite Kaun Awards. An ecstatic Farhan Akhtar said, "Rock On has been a great experience, but what has been even more beautiful is the appreciation this movie has received. Rock On is a coming of age film and I am more than glad that the critics as well as the audiences have loved this film so much. The 'Sabse Favourite Kaun' Award is symbolic of the love of the audiences; after all, what is better than receiving an award which has been chosen by the audiences itself!" Even producer Ritesh Sidhwani can't stop grinning from ear to ear. "Appreciation and accolades are always welcome, but it is even more special when it comes from the audience, because in the end it is them who make us! I am so delighted to have received two extremely prestigious awards, both of which have been the audiences' choice. Rock On is a very special movie, and I am eternally thankful to the audience for embracing this film so well". From the looks of it, the good times only seemed to have begun for team Rock On!!!

'STOP PIRACY - It only helps terrorists buy bullets and bombs' - Industry pleads

Over the years, there have been calls made to stop people from buying pirated DVDs. Bollywood has time and again tried to educate a common man that the money lost due to piracy affects the film business badly and results in thousands of people losing their jobs annually. Needless to say, not many amongst the common man have bothered or cared; after all it hasn't impacted them directly and shelling out Rs. 50 on a pirated DVD seemed to be much more lucrative than going out on a family outing and spending more than Rs. 1000 on a movie in a multiplex. However, the issue appears to be much bigger in the aftermath of the recent Mumbai terror attack. There have been confirmed reports in the past that the money generated from the sales of pirated DVDs is used to fund nefarious activities. While the underworld certainly has a strong connection with piracy, administration has also hinted in the past that a good chunk of it also finds it's way in the coffers of those sponsoring terrorist activities. What this means for a common man is that the small amount shelled out by him on buying a pirated DVD turns out to be quite a substantial amount if one looks at the All India sales of this software. Result? In some part of the world, this chunk of money is used to buy bullets and bombs which comes back to hit you! Scary? Of course yes! This is why the entire industry has come forward yet again to support the cause of STOP PIRACY. And this time around, the cause is not about 'saving the industry' but saving you - the common man - who is unwittingly buying his own coffin by means of buying pirated DVDs. Abhay Deol - "I did not know that earlier. I am sure the underworld will have many such sources. The root of the problem is our own prejudices and apathy as a culture. Whether it is the right wing Hindu parties or Muslim parties, innocent people get caught in the cross fire and new terrorists are born. The only way to fight the menace is to start making individual efforts by spreading awareness about such things and respecting the many communities that make this nation." Abhishek Kapoor - "Piracy is the most potent disease affecting the entertainment business and it's time people stopped buying pirated goods, especially now that they know where their money is eventually ending up - 'As a bullet in their near and dear ones.'" Farah Khan - "People should be made to realize that piracy is not just killing an industry but it also has a larger perspective to it. When activities related to terrorism are funded through piracy, one can understand the gravity of the situation. Hence, there has to be a bigger call taken for this. After all it is not just about the industry losing crores. In the last 10 days, I have seen that we do talk a lot when things like these happen but I am also worried that are we doing something about it? Celebrities are coming together to file petition and that has motivated me also to do something, raise a voice, bring up an issue, debate! On one end entertainment is anyways costly, then there is so much of tax. In between you bring in piracy. In such a scenario, a film maker making money is a huge thing in itself. Think about it, if piracy is eradicated, how much enhancement we could see in the movie business!" Imtiaz Ali - "The poisoned cup returns to plague the inventor. A small convenience is adding to the pool of dark forces who are making life hell for us. The responsibility is ours, because the unfortunate truth is that you get what you deserve. Kill piracy before it finds a way to kill you." John Abraham - "It's a shame if our people buy these DVDs" Kunal Deshmukh - "Would you steal a car or a bank? Buying pirated DVDs is a crime. Let's not turn a blind eye to our actions. Every action will have a consequence and in this case it will only help the wrong side." Neeraj Pandey - "I have only one thing to say - Don't sponsor crime. Stop piracy!" Rahul Dholakia - "True, funds are being transferred of sales from UK and other countries. And I think each one of us has to do our part in this war on terror. The least we can do for the country as responsible citizens is to not encourage any such activities, including paying bribes to corrupt officers." Rohit Jugraj - "I would like to add that for once if our 'Entire Film Industry' comes together on this and associations like AMPTP and IMPPA along with STALWARTS of the industry submit a Memorandum to the new CM and the Police Chief stressing the fact that this piracy money is being used to fund terrorism, it'll really be taken seriously at this juncture. And what's more, all of us young filmmakers can carry out a signature campaign and various forms of protest marches to keep pushing it till we see it through. Let's not allow this initiative to die down! Rohit Shetty - "Don't try to tell me that police and administration is unaware about the issue. Come on, everyone knows that. A pirated DVD comes out on the same day as the film releases. I can take you to 10 places in Mumbai where it is so readily available. But when we talk about all of us coming together and approaching the Govt., industry itself starts acting so funny. All these talks about industry being united and coming together in time of need is bull. You call 10 actors, producers and directors and someone or the other will back out because he can't bear to see the sight of the other. It's our own ego and stupidity which is allowing this crime to flourish and help buy bullets that pierce us back. This is why I am proud of the way industry functions in South, especially when it comes to pirated DVDs being available. Try selling a pirated DVD of a Rajinikanth starrer and rest assured your shop would be uprooted from the surface of earth!" Sajid Khan - "I know this for a fact that piracy is not less than terrorism. The only difference being terrorism kills directly and piracy kills indirectly. Piracy not just kills an industry but also kills entire families by creating losses and recession." Sonu Sood - "It should be stopped completely. Every pirated DVD helps them in buying a bullet which is used against our loved ones." Tarun Mansukhani - "After the recent terror attacks we all want to make a change. We all blame our system, our politicians and our men in uniform, but none of us blame ourselves. If we really want to change things then let's stop funding terrorism. We know how they make their money - From us! Let's fight terrorism, say no to piracy!" Vishal Dadlani - "This never even occurred to me! I'm thrilled at the thought that we can stop part of their funding by doing something so small and personal. I will never watch a pirated DVD again, no matter how badly I want to see the film. It's the least I can do for my Nation." Vivek Agnihotri - "I have, in the last five years, not seen any movie on pirated DVD and haven't let my kids buy and see pirated DVDs as well. It's like seeing Xerox of Michelangelo."

Asin sings in her voice and plays the guitar in London Dreams

Download image as wallpaper At home, she is a docile conservative South Indian girl. But put her on stage and she transforms into a cool chic rock singer with a guitar in her hands and a song on her lips. Apparently, that's what Asin plays in London Dreams. According to sources, there are two separate looks for her Londoner's character. The traditional South Indian look and the rock singer who takes off with her friends to jam and groove to beat. Though producer-director Vipul Shah isn't revealing anything, it is reliably learnt that Asin who makes her transition from Tamil-Telugu to Hindi cinema, even gets to sing in her voice and play the guitar in London Dreams. But it's bye-bye to Tamil and Telugu cinema. Now Asin has moved bag and baggage with her parents to pursue a full-time career in Hindi cinema. The family has been staying in a rented place in the suburbs for a year now. But now, Asin is ready to buy her own place in Bandra. "We're looking at some places. And we'll zero in on the place we want soon." About her role in London Dreams Asin is totally tightlipped. "All I can say is, it's something I've never played before. In fact I think it's a role never seen in Indian cinema. Beyond that I can't talk about it. But I'm very excited about both Ghajini and London Dreams. I've a long list of criteria for selecting a role beginning with the director, banner and co-star and ending with the cinematographer...I want them all to be just right. Am I being greedy? Perhaps. I'm sorry. I can't settle for anything but the best," said Asin before bringing in her birthday quietly.

Karan Johar calls Farhan 'pretty' on his chat show 'Oye...It's Friday'

It was all in fun. But during the recording of Farhan Akhtar's fun-with-a-celeb show 'Oye...It's Friday' Karan Johar 'complimented' his host Farhan Akhtar for looking 'pretty', Farhan thought Karan was talking about Shamita Shetty who also was on the show. "But Karan clarified he was calling Farhan pretty. At first Farhan didn't know how to react. But then he quickly caught hold of himself - he's not acknowledged now as a terrific actor for nothing - and then the rest of the show became an impromptu Dostana with Farhan and Karan doing what John and Abhishek did in Dostana," says a guest on the show. To add to the 'gay' (we mean , lively/happy) atmosphere 'Kantaben' (Sulaba Arya) who trembled with homophobia all through Kal Ho Naa Ho was brought in as a phone-in friend. "And they asked her what she thought of Dostana. Kantaben said she loved it. She raved about the film for a while. Only later did Karan and Farhan realize the lady was talking about the old Dostana with Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha." At some point, Farhan wanted to know who among the actors were Karan's 3 am friends. "And Karan laughed. He said he would never call any star at 3 am because you never know what they'd be doing at that time...Throughout the show, Karan joked openly about Dostana, homophobic people, John's physique, etc. Lately, he has been showing a great deal of comfort with matters of sex and sexuality. It shows in his cinema and in his public conduct and utterances."

Pan Singh Tomar's shoot in an army base aborted on the first day

December 6, when the whole country was on red- alert, Tigmanshu Dhulia was supposed to kick-start his film, bio-pic on Pan Singh Tomar, at an army base in Bengal. The permission was denied. Says Tigmanshu, "It is true we had to start a day late because the army-clearance papers were held over. We finally got clearance for Dec 7 and now we're shooting the army portions of Tomar's life in Rourkela at an army base called Bengal Engineers." No film has ever been shot in this army base. "In fact I went to Saharanpur where I'll shoot at another army base soon. I believe the only prominent actor who shot there was Sunil Dutt for a film called Amrapali many years ago." Tigmanshu will also shoot in the Chambal Valley in March when his protagonist turns into a dacoit. "The Chambal and banditry are familiar cinematic grounds for me because I assisted Shekhar Kapoor on Bandit Queen. But these army scenes in Rourkela and Sharanpur are gruelling." In addition Tigmanshu is working with a leading man who insists on utmost authenticity. Says Tigmanshu, "Irrfan Khan refuses to shoot with a false moustache. So he has grown a real thick moustache for his scenes in the army. Then we move to his sports scenes where he requires a thinner facial growth. Then for his scenes as a villager, he'll have to be clean shaven and finally as a dacoit, he'll have to have stubborn stubble all through." The actor insists on growing all the correct facial hairs for the different phases in the protagonist's life that spans 1950 to 1980. "A time-taking process. But then this kind of dedication adds to the authenticity by leaps and bounds," says Tigmanshu. Irrfan's Olympian trainer Satypal Singh has also joined the actor in Rourkela. "So while Irrfan performs the army scenes, he's continuing his athletic training," informs the director. Under normal circumstances Irrfan's dedication would be dead-on. But the sensitive army base restricts and severely controls the shooting's movement and timing. "We're working against all odds. But I wanted to shoot in all the places where Tomar had been. Otherwise no point in making a bio-pic," ends Tigmanshu.
