Ameesha and Kanav's lovey-dovey moments

Love is surely in the air for Ameesha and her boyfriend Kanav Puri. The Gujju babe's acting career may not be at an all time high but it's her personal life that's been more in the news off-late. A user sent us some pics of Ameesha and Kanav spending some lovey- dovey times with each other and needless to say the duo seems really happy in each other's company. Ameesha and Kanav are seen having a ball of a time in some of the world's exotic locations such as 'The Louvre' in Paris. Kanav even seems to be enjoying the cake off Ameesha's fingers on the occasion of her birthday. Must say, this is one couple who certainly seem 'Made for Each Other'.

Bollywood goes ahead with film releases

Bollywood goes ahead with film releasesDespite the terror attack in Mumbai, the makers of Sorry Bhai and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! are going ahead as per the release plans, but the screening of director Kunaal Roy Kapoor's The President Is Coming has been postponed.
Subhash K. Jha speaks about Sorry Bhai

If Sorry Bhai starred Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham, the love triangle would be located in sizzling Brazil. What we get is the calm blue seas of Mauritius where Sanjay Suri and Sharman Joshi vie for Chitrangda's attention with a laidback stay-calm stay-cool kind of urbane chic that often masquerades as a mirror of contemporary mores in today's cinema. Happily, Sorry Bhai has plenty of genuine moments of emotional 'ouch'-burst. This isn't a film about confrontational relationships. The characters prefer to keep it nice and peaceful on the surface, no matter what the turmoil inside....just like the blue oceans and white sands of Mauritius. Love may or may not mean having to say you're sorry. But Sharman Joshi who plays the kid-brother, who whisks away his Bhai's bride-to-be in a tumultuous romance, says sorry so many times you wonder whom he's trying to convince...the brother or his conscience. Or could it be us, watching this pleasant mild but finally intensity-free romantic comedy set in the mollifying splendour of Mauritius, whom Sharman's sorry state of 'affair' is trying to convince? In one vital sequence, Sharman makes lingering love to his Bhabhi-to-be in the trial room while trying out a wedding suit. Waiting outside the Bridegroom 'Bhaiyya' chuckles, "I'm sure she's making him try out something he has never tried before." Ahem ahem to that. Wicked spurts of humour seem oddly intrusive in this drama of the under-driven. The narration's mood swings from delicious satire to barbed rhetorics....Ma-in-law-to-be Shabana Azmi's ar-son-ic exchanges with her future daughter-in-law could set the azure Mauritian waters on fire, if only they weren't so funny. Sorry Bhai is a film that requires a number of mood changes. In its two hours of mellow playing-time it packs in a whole crises-crossing kaleidoscope of family ties and accompanying emotions ranging from intense motherly possessiveness to authentic bhai-giri. Not all the mood and time transitions are achieved with fluency. Some moments between pairs of characters just don't go far enough to reach into the inner recesses of the heart. Indeed the best moment in the film is the one where the sobbing sibling rests his head on his Bhai's lap to express sorrow for stealing away his fiancée. But then there's a difference between taking your brother's favourite pen to scribble your limericks and stealing his bride. Sorry Bhai swims languorously in a terrain that covers the thumb-sucking selfishness of childhood as well as the sexual friction within a family where a beautiful woman appears as a bone of contention. And what a woman! Chitrangda looking toned and chiseled, playing the spunky woman who wants to break free from a stagnant long-lasting relationship to court life on the fast lane brings in the right flavours of chocolate-and-chutzpah into the tranquil goings-on. Onir keeps the family drama sweet and simple, when he focuses on one-on-ones within the family circle he is in his element. But then he attempts the magic surrealism of Laura Esquivel and Gabriel Farcia-Marquez and the narration gets too ambitious for the mellow-drama's own good. In the film there's a dog that wants to fly. Two sons who believe their mother would die if they swear wrongly by her name. And a trial room for trying on clothes for fashion which becomes the venue for the kid-brother and his Bhaiyya's fiancée's pent-up passion. There're references to Casablanca and Dharmendra's films. But Onir's film is as original as it can get. We won't have another film for a long time where the mom tells her younger son to live in with her elder's son's fiancee. Shabana in the mother's role is a bit of a disappointment. We can see her trying to add layers to a rather sketchily written role, somewhat like making love in the aforementioned trial room. The crew cruises the calm characters and their location with underplayed expertise. Mauritius looks more fragile than passionate, more romantic than libidinous. Boman Irani as her husband is far more relaxed. Trust this astonishing actor to always add little-little things to his role when no one is looking. As for the central performances, Chitrangda makes a likable comeback except when she's too busy putting her best profile forward to the camera. And it's hard for us to believe that Sharman Joshi is supposed to play a guy with such irresistible charm that he can sweep the far-from-blushing-bride off her feet and seize her from his brother. Wonders never do seize.

Bollywood celebrities comment on the terrorist attacks on Mumbai

26th November 2008. The city that never sleeps has come to a grinding halt. Mumbai sees its darkest night ever. The term 'terrorism' or 'terrorists' is enough to scare the living day lights out of you but terrorism is a criminal act that religious beliefs or political positions can never justify. The removal of terrorism should be carried out through reasoned judgment in accordance with laws, not by military retaliations or wars. Two and a half years have passed since the July 11 Mumbai train bombings by the terrorists in 2006, where our police and politicians concluded: 'Mumbai is safe and our security is tightened throughout the city'. The reality, however, is the opposite of this. What has become clear though in the past two and a half years is that our security and intelligence has not only failed to remove terrorism and terrorists but given even more room for such hideous activities. Today these radicals threaten the safety of the Indian people. Like our Independence, securing our freedom now is a long-term struggle but the road to victory will begin and we as Indians won't back off. Bollywood unites once again and the celebrities turn into citizens of Mumbai only to bring out their support and sympathy towards those unlucky few who have been a prey in what's considered to be Mumbai's worst ever terror attack at the Taj and the Trident Oberoi. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel gets you some first hand comments and anger expressed from the stars just hours after the horrifying incident that not only shook the city of Mumbai but the entire world. Madhur Bhandarkar: Mumbai won't be the same after this dreadful attack by the terrorists because the scene of the attack was the epicentre or the hub of the city where you have heritage sites like The Gateway of India and The Taj Hotel. What was considered to be the safest place in the city is now not safe anymore. People seem to be in a state of shock. The question of all the high profile personalities and celebrities will also have to be looked into now. My sympathies to those who have lost their near and dear ones and for those who are hostages. I hope peace prevails soon. Kunal Kohli: This is the worst attack on Mumbai. The Taj is the symbol and not just a hotel. It's a symbol of heritage and culture of Mumbai and when we saw the images of The Taj burning, it was beyond our emotions to describe the scene. This attack is as bad as 9/11. 26th November will be remembered as the darkest day in the Mumbai history. This is not the time to think whether our film industry is at threat or not. It's the time to save more people as we can. There is a time for everything. You cannot be sitting and putting blame on people regarding lapse of security. How do you secure every corner of the city? In Jammu-Kashmir blasts take so frequently in spite of security. Gulshan Grover: This is absolutely the worst terrorist attack in India. I am very much disturbed and shocked by this behaviour and the way the terrorists have taken innocent people as hostages. I would like to believe that Mumbai will change for better after this horrific incident. Jagmohan Mundhra: As you are talking to me, I'd like to tell you that I've just returned from L.A. day before yesterday because my mother-in-law had passed away. It has nothing to do with the attack. Right now, I am at my in-laws house in South Mumbai which is just few hundred yards from both the Taj and the Oberoi. All night long we have been up and alert. I could hear the blasts and firing all night long. Never before have I seen South Mumbai in such a shape. This is going to have a tremendous impact on the tourism of India in the near future. This is such a cruel and a random act of violence that there seems to be no logic behind it. It's scary when you think what could be the terrorist's motive. Vatsal Seth: Right now there is so much of anger in me that I cannot help my own citizens in the time of crisis. There are couple of my friend's brothers and sisters trapped inside the hotel so I am really messed up in my mind. I couldn't sleep last night. Vidya Malvade: Mumbai needs to change since a very long time and now such incidents are becoming a regular nuisance to all of us. I can't understand how we as politicians or people can't do to stop this act of terror. This is becoming something like a habit for Mumbai. I am so sad today that people are dying left right and centre. I am not angry but helpless that I can't go out there and stop people from being killed. There are bunch of people who come on a boat and blow things up, what kind of a security or intelligence are we talking about? Mumbai will bounce back today or tomorrow itself but that's not the point. The point is that somewhere something needs to be done with our security system. Vinay Pathak: Yesterdays attacks are the worst ever I've witnessed in Mumbai. I hope that the security measures in the city should change after all this. Such attacks will never break the spirit of Mumbaikars and this will bring us all a lot closer than ever before to team up against such anti social elements. Anil Kapoor: It's the worst ever attack to take place in India. But I am in no mood to talk about this incident because I want the police, the army and the government to answer the questions to what has happened. Abhishek Kapoor: I don't know how this incident will change the city of Mumbai but I know one thing for sure that it's going to change the way our security measures are in and around the city. This will put a certain amount of fear in peoples mind for a few days to come but will prevail normality in days to come. Gul Panag: I don't know how my comments will be taken by you but this had to happen and is not a complete surprise. Me and you only take notice of terror when it enters the malls or the hotels. But if the same thing happens in the slums we are ok with it. This is a much larger issue than it looks. Have you ever taken into consideration the Islamic population of India? It's in the region of 18 to 20%. The figures keep on varying. Do you know what percent of Islamic population is living below the poverty line? It's 40%. I am not a fundamentalist but I am looking at a much bigger picture. There are certain segments of the society which have not got its due, whether you agree or not. But if you look at the demographics, you'll understand. Whatever the population of Muslims in India, is that population proportionate and reflect in the jobs of this country? When people are poor and have no where to go, they have no choice but to turn into radicals. I hope my views and comments make people understand the broader picture. Anjori Alagh: I was pretty close to the Taj hotel yesterday as I had to travel in town by 4pm. I couldn't travel to Andheri where I live and am now at a friends house in South Mumbai. The entire area is sealed off and for once I think that the city of Mumbai has changed. What's scary is the fact that people coming in boats with no security or patrol in the sea, get down at the Gateway and enter with guns and grenades in the Taj, Trident and Oberoi and create havoc. It does raise a question on the security, but having said that, we do have security in all our hotels but it's not up to the mark. I mean, I can't see many CCTV cameras outside the hotels or in the nearby vicinity. Every Indian is concerned and I am hoping that we as Indians make an effort to increase the security of our country. I hope we learn something from this so that we don't turn vulnerable again. We really need to fight back these terrorists. They should be killed as ruthlessly as they are killing innocent people. Arjun Rampal: It is ridiculous that we are experiencing such events in our city. Every Mumbaikar has the right to ask the government the questions about our city and country's security. How the terrorists got in so easily and create so much damage is unbelievable but has to be answerable by our politicians. We are all upset but the anger should not be directed towards innocent people. We do have to put our concerns about the security and intelligence lapse to the government. There is a lot of corruption in our country and needs to be addressed immediately, like why aren't there good enough CCTV cameras in our city? The government cannot come down upon our city and nor can these terrorists. We are only going to grow stronger day by day. Eesha Koppikhar: I am fine but in no mood to talk about what has been happening in Mumbai. What's happening is very sad and I hope the law and order situation comes under control soon. Apoorva Lakhia: As far as the change in the city of Mumbai is concerned, the government and the army need to see where such attacks can happen from. I mean, people coming in from boats and all looks like some kind of a commando film. It just shows that we need to get a proper cell which deals with terrorism like they do it in the west. Mumbaikars have always shown unity whenever such horrific incidents have taken place in our city. Minissha Lamba: The city of Mumbai is extremely resilient. It's a survivor city. An attack on our city is an attack on our country. I don't know whether it's a lapse of security which has lead to such an incident. I mean, how far can the police force protect such a big city like Mumbai? They are doing the best they can to save our brothers and sisters today. It could easily have been me in one of the hotels. This is like an eye opener and has taken the terrorist activity to the next level where they are taking hostages now. This is the scariest day in Mumbai I've ever witnessed. Mugdha Godse: I don't know what are the consequences that will come out once this dark day is over but I think people, whether it's us as civilians or the government, we should pull up our socks. Right now I am just praying for the betterment of all those who are in the hotels and are injured and have died. I am in a shock state of mind. Our city of dreams is no more the same. In today's time, one has to take care of themselves and I am sure we all do and I am sure all those who are trapped in the hotels will do the same. We Indians haven't learnt how to bow down. Celina Jaitley: I've been stuck at the Four Seasons hotel in Worli which had been cordoned off for security and had to stay the night there. I had come for dinner with colleagues of my father here. Suddenly there was chaos. We heard all the major hotels were being targetted and being a major expatriate hotel, I started getting phone calls to stay put where I was with my friends and security head of my bodyguards company. The hotel staff was incredibly nice in keeping everyone calm and quite. I started getting calls from my friends in London and Ireland and from my father in Lebanon who were watching all the carnage on TV. We were up till 3 am last night close to safe exits till we finally went up to the rooms. I was meant to go to Trident for dinner but some gut feeling made me change my mind I am still shaken and scared and will head back home as soon as its safe .My rakhi brother is heading the NSG commandoes operation. They haven't come out yet. Aashish Chowdhary's sister and brother in law are missing at Trident. Our city is falling apart. I have one word for these terrorists - "We are not scared and will fight back".

The first instance of a double role in Bollywood

Even as double roles get increasingly popular in Bollywood, the first instance dates back by 91 years, way back in 1917. Dadasaheb Phalke's movie Lanka Dahan saw Anna Salunke playing the first double role. Lanka Dahan was a mythological retelling of the familiar 'Ramayana' story of Rama's wife Sita being abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and Rama's triumph. Anna Salunke played the characters of both Ram and Sita in the film. In the age of talkies, it was Shahu Modak who followed his footsteps by enacting the role of a prince and a pauper in Master Vithal's Awara Shahzada in 1933. Screen India

The similarity between Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Ghajini

Plain Janes and Simple Simons getting hip and happening are a popular leitmotif in films. When a staid-looking, simpleton Surinder Sahni (Shah Rukh Khan) working for Punjab Power, meets the flamboyant, vivacious Taani (Anushka Sharma), his world goes topsy turvy. He chucks his black-rimmed glasses and gets his greased hair highlighted. He exchanges his stuffy woollen vests for funky jackets and snazzy jeans. He changes his look, clothes and attitude to woo his lady-love. What effect Shah Rukh's make-over in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has on the box-office remains to be seen on December 12 when the film releases. But makeovers have been a popular leitmotif in films. Not surprising then that if Aamir Khan also sports two diametrically-opposite looks for his upcoming release Ghajini - initially he is the long-tressed romantic and then for the avenging avtaar he goes mean and bald and all full of tattooes. The recurring makeover motif is here again. Screen India

"Why not say - 'Devar Matlab Aadha Gharwala'?" - Chitrangda Singh

Just a day to go for the release of Sorry Bhai and Chitrangda Singh is caught in a nervous yet jovial mood. She admits about all eyes being set on her comeback, especially since there were loud cries when she announced her premature 'alvida' to Bollywood after Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi and Kal - Yesterday and Tomorrow. However, she understands that Sorry Bhai would be a different project since now audience is aware about her existence. Chitrangda, barely 24 hours to go. Feeling Terrific? Terrible? [Laughs] I can't tell you because I myself don't know. I can't sleep as I am thinking about the film very moment. I think more than the audience, I myself have great expectations because of the comeback factor. When Hazaaron...' happened, I just walked in for the release as I didn't know what to expect. Even though it was my debut film, I didn't feel anything at all. In fact I remember that at that time, I was more worried about what I would be wearing for the release event than the audience reaction. I think more than the audience, I myself have great expectations because of the comeback factor And then you waited for years before making a comeback with Sorry Bhai. Weren't you shocked by the subject though, that of a woman falling for her finance's brother? For centuries, there is a saying that 'Saali aadhi gharwali hoti hai'. So today, why do we shy away from saying that 'Devar matlab aadha gharwala'? Why not talk in equal terms. I know that the moment a female says something like this even in a joking way at home, she would be reprimanded. And then we talk about woman empowerment! In any case, we have showcased the entire dilemma in a lighthearted manner. Even the film's punchline says that 'Come Fall In Love With Your Brother's Bride'! From your earlier heavy-duty films, Sorry Bhai would have come across as a welcome relief? Definitely, this was some kind of relief. In fact even when I did my first two films, a lot of people were asking me if I would continue to keep doing stuff like that. Why just me, no actor would want to do the same thing time and again. It all becomes mundane and I also wanted to do something lighter where I didn't have to stress myself; something which isn't too high on emotions. I wanted to be a part of something which is fun and nice. I wanted to be a part of something which is fun and nice. And was that the reason you didn't sign anything for such long time? Were you getting all intense roles to portray? No, that was not the case. In fact I had cut myself completely. It was last year when I finally decided that I wanted to get back to films and started thinking of calling up people. Coincidentally, Onir called up around the same time and narrated the script. I was itching to get back in front of camera and since I knew about the two films he had done (My Brother Nikhil and Bas Ek Pal), I was game. But why Onir? Onir told me that Sorry Bhai was a light fun family film but again dealing with a delicate subject. I guess it was the perfect combination that I was looking for. So you know, it was not really planned that I was saying no to all heavyweights and suddenly said yes to him. It all just fitted in well at the right time. Onir hasn't quite tasted commercial success. Weren't you worried? I am a bit impulsive when it comes to making decisions and I wasn't worried about Onir's record. I want to do certain characters and whether I select them right or wrong, I stand by my decisions. I go by my gut feelings. Moreover, regardless of the way his films may have done at the box office, they had some sensibilities of their own. I like the fact that he does something different every time. Moreover, the moment I got to know about the film's cast with people like Shabana Azmi involved, I knew for sure that this was going to be my comeback film. There are some odd people who have morality issues with the way things should work in real life So after all the hype and hoopla, the real test comes in the form of the final product. Sorry Bhai has gone through some private screenings for celebrities and friends. How have the reactions been? It may sound cliched but the fact is that people have liked the film immensely. My performance has been appreciated and what gladdened me most was to get a message from Raju Hirani. He felt that I was being quite natural in the film and even went on to suggest that I now start keeping a date diary handy. That was such a nice thing to hear because here I was so insecure and nervous while someone of his stature was impressed by my work. Really, my day was made! There must have been some brickbats too? Of course yes. There are some odd people who have morality issues with the way things should work in real life. But that's ok; people should have a difference of opinion. This is the very reason the film has been made so that we can tell our point of view.
