"Why not say - 'Devar Matlab Aadha Gharwala'?" - Chitrangda Singh

Just a day to go for the release of Sorry Bhai and Chitrangda Singh is caught in a nervous yet jovial mood. She admits about all eyes being set on her comeback, especially since there were loud cries when she announced her premature 'alvida' to Bollywood after Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi and Kal - Yesterday and Tomorrow. However, she understands that Sorry Bhai would be a different project since now audience is aware about her existence. Chitrangda, barely 24 hours to go. Feeling Terrific? Terrible? [Laughs] I can't tell you because I myself don't know. I can't sleep as I am thinking about the film very moment. I think more than the audience, I myself have great expectations because of the comeback factor. When Hazaaron...' happened, I just walked in for the release as I didn't know what to expect. Even though it was my debut film, I didn't feel anything at all. In fact I remember that at that time, I was more worried about what I would be wearing for the release event than the audience reaction. I think more than the audience, I myself have great expectations because of the comeback factor And then you waited for years before making a comeback with Sorry Bhai. Weren't you shocked by the subject though, that of a woman falling for her finance's brother? For centuries, there is a saying that 'Saali aadhi gharwali hoti hai'. So today, why do we shy away from saying that 'Devar matlab aadha gharwala'? Why not talk in equal terms. I know that the moment a female says something like this even in a joking way at home, she would be reprimanded. And then we talk about woman empowerment! In any case, we have showcased the entire dilemma in a lighthearted manner. Even the film's punchline says that 'Come Fall In Love With Your Brother's Bride'! From your earlier heavy-duty films, Sorry Bhai would have come across as a welcome relief? Definitely, this was some kind of relief. In fact even when I did my first two films, a lot of people were asking me if I would continue to keep doing stuff like that. Why just me, no actor would want to do the same thing time and again. It all becomes mundane and I also wanted to do something lighter where I didn't have to stress myself; something which isn't too high on emotions. I wanted to be a part of something which is fun and nice. I wanted to be a part of something which is fun and nice. And was that the reason you didn't sign anything for such long time? Were you getting all intense roles to portray? No, that was not the case. In fact I had cut myself completely. It was last year when I finally decided that I wanted to get back to films and started thinking of calling up people. Coincidentally, Onir called up around the same time and narrated the script. I was itching to get back in front of camera and since I knew about the two films he had done (My Brother Nikhil and Bas Ek Pal), I was game. But why Onir? Onir told me that Sorry Bhai was a light fun family film but again dealing with a delicate subject. I guess it was the perfect combination that I was looking for. So you know, it was not really planned that I was saying no to all heavyweights and suddenly said yes to him. It all just fitted in well at the right time. Onir hasn't quite tasted commercial success. Weren't you worried? I am a bit impulsive when it comes to making decisions and I wasn't worried about Onir's record. I want to do certain characters and whether I select them right or wrong, I stand by my decisions. I go by my gut feelings. Moreover, regardless of the way his films may have done at the box office, they had some sensibilities of their own. I like the fact that he does something different every time. Moreover, the moment I got to know about the film's cast with people like Shabana Azmi involved, I knew for sure that this was going to be my comeback film. There are some odd people who have morality issues with the way things should work in real life So after all the hype and hoopla, the real test comes in the form of the final product. Sorry Bhai has gone through some private screenings for celebrities and friends. How have the reactions been? It may sound cliched but the fact is that people have liked the film immensely. My performance has been appreciated and what gladdened me most was to get a message from Raju Hirani. He felt that I was being quite natural in the film and even went on to suggest that I now start keeping a date diary handy. That was such a nice thing to hear because here I was so insecure and nervous while someone of his stature was impressed by my work. Really, my day was made! There must have been some brickbats too? Of course yes. There are some odd people who have morality issues with the way things should work in real life. But that's ok; people should have a difference of opinion. This is the very reason the film has been made so that we can tell our point of view.

Exclusive Music Preview: Shortkut - The Con Is On

Anil Kapoor is keeping busy. While first half of 2008 saw him appearing in three films as a lead protagonist - Black & White, Race and Tashan - second half of the year is ending with Yuvvraaj. Meanwhile, he is all set to unleash his production Shortkut - The Con Is On which is expected to arrive on 23rd January 2009. This writer got an exclusive hearing of the songs that have been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. There are four songs in the film's soundtrack where the musical team is seen in its elements once again. Title song 'Shortkut', which is also the opening number in the album, is quite rhythmic and makes for a peppy hearing. A theme song, what makes it special is the sheer energy that Shankar Mahadevan fuses into it in the capacity of a singer. The number which is expected to get the house on fire though is 'Koi Ye Na Jaane' that has a Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy stamp all over it. A core Indian number with naughty traits to it, the song reminds of the title song of Salaam-E-Ishq. Picturised on Arshad Warsi and Amrita Rao with a beach setting to it, the song has fun quotient as its USP. From fun, it's time to get into a romantic rendezvous with 'Nau Baje' that sees the coming together of Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik. It is nice to hear Alka Yagnik since she is selective in her choice of songs (her 'Tu Muskura' from Yuvvraaj still lingers on). A soft number with a poetic touch to it, this number which is picturised on Akshaye Khanna and Amrita Rao has a strong R.D. Burman influence to it. Finally there is 'Mareez-E-Mohabbat' about which buzz has already been created ever since the word spread about Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt making a special appearance for this item song that also features Amrita Rao. A peppy track, it has the potential to be the next 'Kajra Re' in the making if choreographers Bosco-Caesar have done their job well in getting the right moves on. Shortkut - The Con Is On is directed by Neeraj Vora and also stars Simi Garewal along with Chunkey Pandey. Anees Bazmee, who has given three back to back hits in the form of Singh Is Kinng, Welcome and No Entry, has written the screenplay of the film. The soundtrack is expected to arrive in the middle of December. A detailed review would follow soon. Watch this space!

"I hadn't told my wife about the kissing in Yuvvraaj" - Zayed Khan

Hard to believe, but Zayed Khan kisses for the first time on screen in Subhash Ghai's Yuvvraaj. And the lip-locking girl is Aimee (Amrit) Maghera. Shivers Zayed, "Firstly I've never done intimate scenes like these on screen. I'm a family man with a wife and son. And to watch the scenes with my parents at the premiere gave me the shivers. What would they think? On top of it all it was our marriage anniversary. What a gift for my wife!" Fortunately, Zayed's wife Malaika was quite 'cool' about her husband's dedication to the craft. So Zayed could exhale. It took all of the Showman's persuasive powers to convince the young Khan (belonging to an extended family of reputed ladies' men) that a lip-to-lip is very much the order of the day...or shall we say, the odour of the Friday, going by the legion of lip locks we've lately witnessed in our films. Says the source, "It isn't just a kiss in Yuvvraaj. It was a huge smooching spree between Zayed and his co-star Aimee (Amrit) Maghera. Zayed really had to go for the kill. And he was reluctant and unwilling. Zayed protested hard. He argued he's a married man with a son. And his wife would certainly not like seeing him in a compromising position with his co-star even if it was for the screen. But Subhash Ghai was adamant. The Showman has never had a kissing scene in his cinema before. He wanted to start good and proper. He insisted Zayed do the needful." When probed about the screen scorchers, Zayed acts ultra-cool. "My lips are sealed, and not just for the kissing-let me tell you very explicitly. But yes, some of the scenes did have me worried. This was my first screen kiss. And I do have a very laadla beta image among the audience. What would the mothers in the audience think? I wondered! I hadn't even told my wife about the kissing in Yuvvraaj. I wanted to surprise her on the premiere night."

"I play a girl who exists in real life" - Neetu Chandra

Download image as wallpaper After working with Akshay Kumar where she had to share screen space with two other leading ladies [Garam Masala], Madhur Bhandarkar who gave her a good opportunity in Traffic Signal where she was a part of an ensemble cast and with Suneil Shetty she got her comic timing unveiled as a Jat cop in One Two Three, Neetu Chandra is all set to romance 'Super Chor' Abhay Deol in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! Naturally a big project for her, especially since she plays one of the principal protagonists, Neetu Chandra has quite some hopes pined on OLLO. After close to two years in the industry, you finally get to do a film which is entirely yours. Excited? Well, you are forgetting Traffic Signal where I was the solo female lead. As for Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, it is not one of those frivolous films that may arrive Friday after Friday, It is a very important movie and same holds good for my character. Dibakar (Banerjee) has shown his faith in me and that's reassuring enough. He has himself agreed that mine was quite a difficult role to play and he is happy with the way I performed eventually. It was a lot of hard work but jaisa kehte hai naa ki anth bhala to sab bhala. If my director believes that I have done well, that's good enough for me since it means that all your hard work has paid. One hears that the film is quite close to reality? Indeed the story of OLLO is very-very close to reality. And before you jump on to asking me that whose real life story is the film based on, let me clarify that it has been inspired by a lot of characters that Dibakar knows of or has read about. Yes, the film takes it's germ from the actual story of a thief who is there in this world; everybody knows that he is from Delhi. Tell me honestly, besides filling in the requirement of a leading lady in a Bollywood film, how do you really contribute to OLLO? My contribution is that I play the role of a girl who again belongs to real life. She exists and is not a fictional character. No, I haven't met or spoken to her; in fact nobody has since she could not be traced. In fact she is not to be found even as per police records. Coming to the part I play, I was living this girl's life for so many months. There are multiple shades to her and I had to get into her mindset. Imagine being a girl who knows that her boyfriend is a thief even though she herself comes from a lower middle class background. She knows what she is getting into, how people would perceive her but she is still living that life. Wo dari hui, sehemi hui hai lekin phir bhi ek brave front rakhti hai. Did you go completely as per the character sketch that Dibakar gave you about this girl? More or less yes, though there were a couple of things which I generally said about the character and Dibakar thought that they made sense. He in fact included these thoughts into the script as well because he told me that 'Neetu, you are right. This is exactly how Sonal is'. To be able to let your point come across a National award winning director and having it accepted to is a good enough high for me. Click above for more movie stills Since the film is supposed to be true to life, there aren't any song and dance routines. Didn't you miss them? Well, I am a part of the promotional music video of the title song but yes, there are hero-heroine gaanas. But let's look at it this way; today's audience has changed and you have to include those ingredients in the film which would go with its genre, setting and narrative. In this context, OLLO's narrative requires the songs to be played in the background and I am sure they have fitted in quite beautifully there. I may not have lip synched to the songs but for the film as a whole, the lyrics by themselves make a lot of meaning. Paresh Rawal seems to be your favorite co-star. Except for Traffic Signal, you have shared screen space with him in three films now - Garam Masala, One Two Three and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! He is my lucky mascot and quite a cool dude. Let me not berate him by saying that 'he is cool even at this age' since age has nothing to do with attitude. He is cool because he is a great actor and pretty chilled out, just like Abhay. Talking of Abhay, there have been murmurs about that extra something between you and him. Want to confess? What's there to confess? Media would still believe what it wants to believe. I don't even want to comment on anything so trivial as this because it is nobody's business. He is a fantastic actor and a great buddy; that's all I want to comment for now. As for chemistry, look out for that on the screen rather than off screen. On a parting note, how confident you are about the prospects of OLLO? Very confident and quite comfortable too. We all are very happy with the way the film has shaped up and looking forward to its release. A few screenings have already been held and just like Dibakar's Khosla Ka Ghosla, people have loved OLLO too. I wish the response is same once the film opens to entire audience out there. I am looking at getting some more good films after this and try to get better over my best. Touchwood!
