"I play a girl who exists in real life" - Neetu Chandra

Download image as wallpaper After working with Akshay Kumar where she had to share screen space with two other leading ladies [Garam Masala], Madhur Bhandarkar who gave her a good opportunity in Traffic Signal where she was a part of an ensemble cast and with Suneil Shetty she got her comic timing unveiled as a Jat cop in One Two Three, Neetu Chandra is all set to romance 'Super Chor' Abhay Deol in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! Naturally a big project for her, especially since she plays one of the principal protagonists, Neetu Chandra has quite some hopes pined on OLLO. After close to two years in the industry, you finally get to do a film which is entirely yours. Excited? Well, you are forgetting Traffic Signal where I was the solo female lead. As for Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, it is not one of those frivolous films that may arrive Friday after Friday, It is a very important movie and same holds good for my character. Dibakar (Banerjee) has shown his faith in me and that's reassuring enough. He has himself agreed that mine was quite a difficult role to play and he is happy with the way I performed eventually. It was a lot of hard work but jaisa kehte hai naa ki anth bhala to sab bhala. If my director believes that I have done well, that's good enough for me since it means that all your hard work has paid. One hears that the film is quite close to reality? Indeed the story of OLLO is very-very close to reality. And before you jump on to asking me that whose real life story is the film based on, let me clarify that it has been inspired by a lot of characters that Dibakar knows of or has read about. Yes, the film takes it's germ from the actual story of a thief who is there in this world; everybody knows that he is from Delhi. Tell me honestly, besides filling in the requirement of a leading lady in a Bollywood film, how do you really contribute to OLLO? My contribution is that I play the role of a girl who again belongs to real life. She exists and is not a fictional character. No, I haven't met or spoken to her; in fact nobody has since she could not be traced. In fact she is not to be found even as per police records. Coming to the part I play, I was living this girl's life for so many months. There are multiple shades to her and I had to get into her mindset. Imagine being a girl who knows that her boyfriend is a thief even though she herself comes from a lower middle class background. She knows what she is getting into, how people would perceive her but she is still living that life. Wo dari hui, sehemi hui hai lekin phir bhi ek brave front rakhti hai. Did you go completely as per the character sketch that Dibakar gave you about this girl? More or less yes, though there were a couple of things which I generally said about the character and Dibakar thought that they made sense. He in fact included these thoughts into the script as well because he told me that 'Neetu, you are right. This is exactly how Sonal is'. To be able to let your point come across a National award winning director and having it accepted to is a good enough high for me. Click above for more movie stills Since the film is supposed to be true to life, there aren't any song and dance routines. Didn't you miss them? Well, I am a part of the promotional music video of the title song but yes, there are hero-heroine gaanas. But let's look at it this way; today's audience has changed and you have to include those ingredients in the film which would go with its genre, setting and narrative. In this context, OLLO's narrative requires the songs to be played in the background and I am sure they have fitted in quite beautifully there. I may not have lip synched to the songs but for the film as a whole, the lyrics by themselves make a lot of meaning. Paresh Rawal seems to be your favorite co-star. Except for Traffic Signal, you have shared screen space with him in three films now - Garam Masala, One Two Three and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! He is my lucky mascot and quite a cool dude. Let me not berate him by saying that 'he is cool even at this age' since age has nothing to do with attitude. He is cool because he is a great actor and pretty chilled out, just like Abhay. Talking of Abhay, there have been murmurs about that extra something between you and him. Want to confess? What's there to confess? Media would still believe what it wants to believe. I don't even want to comment on anything so trivial as this because it is nobody's business. He is a fantastic actor and a great buddy; that's all I want to comment for now. As for chemistry, look out for that on the screen rather than off screen. On a parting note, how confident you are about the prospects of OLLO? Very confident and quite comfortable too. We all are very happy with the way the film has shaped up and looking forward to its release. A few screenings have already been held and just like Dibakar's Khosla Ka Ghosla, people have loved OLLO too. I wish the response is same once the film opens to entire audience out there. I am looking at getting some more good films after this and try to get better over my best. Touchwood!

"OLLO is basically a work of research, imagination and memories" - Dibakar

He made his splashing debut in the dream world of Bollywood merely two years ago with a smash-hit film called Khosla Ka Ghosla starring the factory of versatile actors like Anupam Kher, Boman Irani and Ranvir Shorey in lead roles. He is none other than the extremely down to earth Dibakar Banerjee, who is back to amuse the cine goers yet again with his latest offering Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! which is all set to test itself at the Box-Office this Friday (Nov 28). Bollywood Hungama caught up with the director for an exclusive one-on-one interview. Dibakar, to start with Khosla ka Ghosla and now Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, it seems that Bollywood can completely trust you when it comes to uncommon movie titles. In a nutshell, tell us as to what's Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! all about? The film is about a thief called Lucky and his rise from being a normal guy (like anyone one of us) to a thief. Even as a thief, he goes on to become not just the country's most wanted but also the most loved thief. Since the film is set in Delhi, the title has got lot of prominence and significance with the city. Look, what happens in Delhi is that whenever you want to call out to someone whose name is Lucky; you generally tend to call him in this fashion 'Oye Lucky...Lucky Oye'. Hence, the title. Even as a thief, Lucky goes on to become not just the country's most wanted but also the most loved thief Do you accept or refute the rumors that Lucky's character inspired from a real life thief? I totally refuse to but such rumours. Lucky's character is purely a piece of fiction and my imagination. It also reflects the memories of my childhood. Moreover, I've also exploited the characteristic behaviors characteristic behaviors of many thieves. All of this, plus, there are many adventures that I've taken from magazines, television programs. All in all, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is basically a work of research, imagination, and memories. Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is basically a work of research, imagination, and memories What are the locations that you have shot the film? We shot the film in Delhi, Manali and Mumbai. You have managed to get the super versatile Paresh Rawal in not one, but a whopping three roles. Which one of his three characters do you identify with? All the three characters are very dear to me because they are all my creations...they are all like my babies. Hence, I love all of them. So, it's really difficult for me to single out one character. Any memorable moments while shooting for Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! that you would like to share with us? My most memorable moment was when Paresh Rawal was playing Sardar's character with around 2000 people waiting to see his act on the sets. It so happened that Paresh Rawal came in the Sardarji's get-up, played his part and simply went off. Throughout the shoot, no one recognized that the 'Sardar' was actually Paresh Rawal, as a result of which everyone kept on waiting for him! Paresh Rawal came in the Sardarji's get-up, played his part and simply went off. Throughout the shoot, no one recognized that the 'Sardar' was actually Paresh Rawal! How has the music of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! shaped up? The music of the film was done after a month long research in the interiors of Punjab and Haryana. The music director of the film- Sneha Khanwalkar went on researching for new kinds of tunes, and sounds. And she came back with really off-beat tunes, themes, and voices. The voices used in the film are such that they can only be heard in the deep interior villages and local musical shows. And, when we heard the Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! album, it was very root layered and folk in terms of its sound and orchestration. It truly brings out the flavor of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. The voices used in the film are such that they can only be heard in the deep interior villages and local musical shows. One of the characters played by Paresh Rawal is that of a 'marriage band master'. How did you get the idea of such a character? This 'bandwala' character I got from a newspaper article that I had read nearly ten years back. I built on the character and hence it's not based on any real person but is a figment of my imagination. Paresh Rawal was given a week's time to research and perfect the character. He had to do the speech exercises to get the right mix of Delhi style Hindi-Punjabi accent. We even had a voice artist who recorded some long dialogues in that accent so that Paresh could get the right feel of the language. Obviously, Paresh Rawal kept hearing and practicing his lines and did get it bang on target. Paresh Rawal was given a week's time to research and perfect the character. The buzz doing the rounds is that you are directing a film for Yash Raj Films. Is it true? No, I'm not doing any Yash Raj Film. Finally give us 3 reasons, why people should go and watch Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!? Well, the first reason is if you are a thief then you should watch the film. The second reason is if you are not a thief then you should watch the film, the third reason is if you are not a thief and are planning to become one then you should watch it!!!

Karan Johar features in the November issue of People

Kuch toh 'log' kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna... Well, the ironical part is that the abovementioned famous yesteryear's song has just been proved right (repeatedly) by the super-cool magazine 'People'. Looking at the way they are 'breaking' stories, it won't be surprising to see the leading dailies' editors breaking the heads of their journos! The latest issue has Karan Johar...even before you get any kind of ideas about his 'confessions', then let us play the spoilsport by saying NO...Karan has not spoken on his sexual preferences. And even though 'People' tried to take up the forbidden route, the normally calm Karan suddenly becomes 'Current Johar' and answers, "That's not for you to know and not for me to reveal. My personal life will always be my personal life". Not just that, you can find the ever-so-charming Karan share his views on his family, his background (how he had almost landed up in France and what made him stop), his very closet friends and of course, the icing on the cake...you guessed it right...the one and only SRK! Overall, after reading this issue, one would surely be forced to rename May 25 (Karan's birthday) as Friendship Day, as we certainly believe that there cannot be a greater friend, philosopher and guide than Karan!

Enamoured by cast, Sudhir Mishra to take Tera Kya Hoga Johnny story forward

There are many reasons why directors make sequels. But have we ever heard of a sequel because the director has fallen in love with the cast? This is precisely what has happened with Sudhir Mishra during the making of Tera Kya Hoga Johnny. "I've worked with the most temperamental of stars. When I did Calcutta Mail, I was told Manisha Koirala would be a problem. She was fine. Then during Chameli, it was said that Kareena Kapoor was a problem. On the contrary, she stood in the sun and studio rain for two hours at a stretch in that garish prostitute's saree and makeup without complaining. I've been singularly lucky with actors. In my entire career I've never had any problem with any actor." But the Johnny experience takes the cake. "It's an ensemble cast. Kay Kay Menon, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Karan Nath and Soha Ali Khan gave me more than any bunch of actors ever. They all knew the new boy Sikandar had the main role. They didn't mind it at all. In fact Neil who I'm horrified to read has supposedly given me a hard time by refusing to dub, was the epitome of co-operation. He came to the shootings even when he wasn't required. He knew he didn't have a pivotal role. But he sat on the sets, came to the editing and even re-shot for two days just before left for the US." So pleased was Sudhir Mishra with Neil's work that he invited Neil's father singer Nitin Mukesh and mother to see the film. "Do you know Nitin Mukesh assisted Hrikesh Mukherjee? So he's half a filmmaker himself. When he saw Tera Kya Hoga Johnny, Nitin Mukesh was bowled over. He took us all out for dinner. Neil, Karan, Soha (whom I had worked with before) all became a part of my family. All the actors are splendid in my film. In fact, Nagesh Kukunoor saw Karan Nath in my film and signed him for Bemisal which he's shooting right now in Rajasthan. And when I had a problem with my producer, Karan's father came forward to help with not just his son's but Neil's payments. And Neil, whose 2 lakh rupees were pending, offered to forego the money. He told me to use it to complete the film. Tell me, which director gets to work with such actors? I'm blessed." Sudhir's voice brims over with emotion. And now Sudhir is so enamoured of his 'Johnny' family he doesn't want to let go. "I want to carry the story forward now. There's room for the characters to go forward. And I don't want to lose the family that I've made during the making of Tera Kya Hoga Johnny. Not yet." Stories that Neil has been troublesome bother and amuse Sudhir Mishra. "They say he's refusing to dub. But Tera Kya Hoga Johnny is in sync sound! There's no dubbing required. Neil is almost like a son to me now."

All our efforts and hard work are paying off." When we quizzed him about the latest media rumors about him postponing his film Voice From The Sky, in order to concentrate on a new project (that will again portray him as an actor), Farhan clarified, "The main reason for Voice From The Sky to get postponed is due to the production team's hassles, which I feel will be sorted out." "I've learnt so much from Naseerbhai and Om-ji"

Click above for more movie stills It's difficult to please someone like Paresh Rawal. The actor has worked with some of the biggest names in the business and continues to call the shots even today. Incidentally, the versatile actor has been labelled a comedian thanks to the number of comedies he has acted in since the past few years. Doesn't he get tired of comedy? "I get put off by comic roles that don't make sense. Where the director has no control over the script. He ruins the subject due to his inability," Paresh admits frankly. The actor has enacted three different roles in OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE! and I have to admit, Paresh's [and Abhay's too] performance bowled me over completely. "Dibakar [Banerjee; the director] deserves the credit. Usme dum hain," Paresh says with utmost modesty. Next on the cards is MAHARATHI, a play Paresh had produced and directed in the 1980s. Why didn't he direct its cinematic version? "Believe me when I say this, I have lost objectivity. The play was of 3 hours' duration, while the film has a running time of less than 2 hours. I didn't know what should be retained in the film. Plus, I didn't want to experiment with the medium [cinema]. I am a novice," Paresh states. So how did he decide on Shivam Nair? "Naseerbhai [Naseeruddin Shah] suggested his name. I'd also seen AHISTA AHISTA and although it didn't work at the box-office, I realized that Shivam knew the job well. Besides, he's an excellent person, so that helps," Paresh says. So how has the experience been? "Wonderful! Watching stalwarts like Naseerbhai and Om-ji perform is the ultimate high for an actor. I've learnt so much from them," he smiles.

"I would have been crushed had Bobby said No" - Tarun Mansukhani

The world would have thought that with Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham, Tarun Mansukhani had found his perfect star cast for Dostana. But wait, that's not the case. And that's because without the man who plays the fourth most important character in this Karan Johar film, Tarun may not have been as ecstatic as he is today. The man is none other than Bobby Deol and as per Tarun; Dostana wouldn't have been the project it is today if not for the presence of Bobby Deol. Though Bobby's presence in the film has met with mixed reactions, Tarun continues to stand by his man who he believes was the first and the last choice for the role. Also, the one which was THE most perfect! "When I wrote the part for this particular character in Dostana, Bobby was the first person I could think of. Even though I didn't know him, I knew that he had to be in the film. Karan (Johar) gave him a call and his first response was not too encouraging. He point blank said that he wasn't quite willing to do the kind of role he was offered", details Tarun. It was almost a fairy tale outing for Tarun who felt that he had lost Bobby for Dostana. "Somehow the meeting was arranged with Bobby and I asked him whether he was interested in me narrating only his part or the entire film. Since he had the time, he gave me a go ahead to narrate the whole film. What happened next was truly surreal. He was rolling away with laughter and stated then and there that he would love to be a part of the film." Tarun couldn't hide his shock though. "I was completely taken aback since I wasn't quite hoping him to say yes so soon. I was quiet and it was only when Bobby asked me whether I still wanted him for the film that I came back to my senses. It was like a dream coming true because he is such a fantastic human being, a talented actor and an ultra professional." Talking about professionalism, Tarun reveals, "For a 9:30 am shot, he would be ready at 9:25 am. He is a blue blooded person and truly a film royalty. When he stands up, he has a persona of his own. Really, this role had to be done by Bobby Deol. I would have been crushed if Bobby would have said, No. Though he has a special appearance in the film, it indeed has in true terms being extra special for me."

Jackie Shroff to play the baddie in Salman starrer Veer

Salman Khan starrer Veer has been in the news since it was announced. First it was the news that the script of the film had been written by Salman himself which created quite a buzz, then it was Salman's beefed up, bronzed warrior look in the film which was talked about and then it was Mithun Chakraborty playing Sallu's father in the film which hit the headlines.
