What ‘Blink’ Begat

Courtesy of Little, Brown and Company.

Take just the quickest glance at stores' nonfiction bookshelves and you can't help but make this snap judgment: Malcolm Gladwell's Blink has reached the tipping point. Single-subject nonfiction is nothing new, but only Gladwell could make an industry standard out of white covers, single-word titles, sans-serif fonts, and vaguely self-help subtitles (See his own new best seller, Outliers.) Since publishers have apparently taken Blink's insta-judgment credo, "judge a book by its cover," to heart, we did some research. Behold, the future (and recent past) in blatant Blink knockoffs.

But there's even more cause for celebration! The Times speculates that — despite producer Robert F.X. Sillerman's outlandish claims to the contrary — Frankenstein might not have earned enough to repay its investors. Because the show cost "one and a half times more than The Producers, it would take the show that much longer to earn back its investment, which would seem to put the recoupment date beyond its Jan. 4 close" (especially with recent drops in ticket sales). It's almost enough to make you forget that Broadway, along with the rest of our country, is just one slow holiday season away from total economic ruin!

Sumner Redstone Not So Adamant About Keeping CBS Anymore

Sumner's actually looking pretty tight. He's clearly been doing his gobble Kegels.

A couple of weeks ago, at an event, Sumner Redstone assured one of our reporters — as he has been saying publicly to everyone — that he would never sell Viacom or CBS. Actually, the phrase he used was "never, never, never, never, never." But today's Times reports that what the media mogul has been saying privately is slightly different. As he offers to sell off his movie-theater chain in order to satisfy lenders, there's been debate over how much the 1,500 locations are actually worth. Some evaluators say $500 million, but Redstone reportedly argues the figure is above $1 billion. If the final number is on the lower end, sources close to the mogul say he's willing to put CBS on the block, but not Viacom. It's good news for his holding company, National Amusements, which is facing a $800 million debt deadline, and also bodes well for his fractured relationship with his daughter, who owns 20 percent of the shares. But it's not as good for us, because we just loved the way he chanted "never, never, never!" "Sometimes, maybe, probably!" just doesn't wiggle the gobble in the same way.

Oh No, a Really Hot Teenage Model Is Dating a Slightly Less Hot Cougar Teacher

See, if we weren't trying so hard to be nice, the caption for this picture would be, "Seriously??"

Sometimes a tabloid story will really test the limits of a blogger. For example, how does one cover the saga from the cover of the Daily News today? In it, spectacularly gorgeous 19-year-old model Joshua Walter has caused quite a kerfuffle over an affair he had with a not-quite-as-spectacularly gorgeous 37-year-old teacher, Gina Salamino. See, Walter was listed as a student when the affair began (the pair met when he was 12 but started dating when he was 16). Since Salamino is a teacher (not his) in the New York public school system, she was fired — but now she's fighting back by saying that since Walter was too busy catwalking around the world, he actually wasn't attending classes and therefore wasn't technically a student.

Okay, so this is where the challenging part comes in. How does a blogger remain charitable when wondering how the hell this happened? Exactly how is it possible not to look at this strapping, flawless boy in his sexual prime and wonder aloud what exactly this seemingly nice yet twenty-years-older woman did to get him to date her, move in with her, and then have a child with her? Nothing against this probably very fun woman, but how to keep one's characteristic cheery humor while contemplating why, in the name of all that is holy and unholy, she gets to date a magnificent, ripe, explosive, squirmy sex god and your blogger doesn't? It's hard, to say the least.

LeBron James Conquering Hollywood Now Too

King James: Lionsgate has teamed up with Interscope Records to nab the rights to More Than a Game, a documentary about LeBron James's high-school days. The film, which follows James and his teammates at Akron, Ohio's St. Vincent-St. Mary High School as they go from rundown gym to national glory, debuted to much fanfare at Toronto this year. Now all that's needed is a storybook ending to LeBron's incredible story — a trade to the Knicks. [Variety]

Mumbai Calling: The writer behind Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, Paul Schrader, is packing his bags and heading for Mumbai to write and direct Bollywood action flick Extreme City. The cross-cultural tale will focus on an American man who's in India to resolve a kidnapping case for his father-in-law, when he finds himself caught the middle of a gangster plot. Think Travis Bickle dancing in the streets while wearing a puffy shirt. [HR]

Don't Do That, Bro: Barry Sonnenfeld and CBS are developing a dude-friendly single-camera sitcom called Things a Man Should Never Do Past 30. The project is based on a list of 500 such rules written by Esquire contributing editor David Katz, who's penning the script with fellow Esquire scribe A.J. Jacobs. The show focuses on an editor at a men's magazine who can't embrace adulthood. Finally, a man-child comedy! [HR]

CW Gets Punk'd: Ashton Kutcher's production company Katalyst Films is bringing two projects to the CW: The Beautiful Life is a drama that centers on male and female models who live together in New York, including Christopher, a 22-year-old "destined for the JC Penney catalog," and 15-year-old Reyna, "destined to become the next Heidi Klum." Chloe Gamble is about a Texas beauty queen who moves to Hollywood to achieve stardom. Both shows end each episode with Kutcher jumping out from behind a truck to reveal scenes from next week. [Variety]

Love Story: Production is set to begin next year on an indie documentary chronicling the fight for same-sex marriage across America. Produced by Robert Zimmer Jr., Matthew Mishory, and Michael Einheuser, the doc will follow philosophy professor Dr. John Corvino as he travels the country learning inspiring personal stories and debating gay marriage's biggest opponents. We're especially looking forward to the reasoned, thoughtful debate with Fred Phelps. [HR]

Society Girls: Producer Maurice Kanbar and Daphne Zuniga are teaming up to make The Scene, a dark satire about the Manhattan party circuit and entertainment industry. In the Theresa Rebeck screenplay, adapted from her play Gossip, Zuniga plays a cynical TV talk-show producer who must deal with a chameleon-like social climber. But the film is being shot in San Francisco, which is a mistake, because there's no social climber like a Manhattan social climber. [HR]

Avant-Garde Fashion Might Be on Hiatus, But That Doesn’t Mean Consumers Don't Want It

Gareth Pugh, fall 2008

Has the economy killed avant-garde fashion? According to a lengthy article in WWD, avant-garde designs, save those by a select few like Gareth Pugh and Bernard Willhelm, have fallen by the wayside. Fashion designers want to sell clothes consumers want to buy, and avant-garde does not fall under that umbrella anymore. Director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology Valerie Steele says, “Most people want very familiar, nonthreatening-looking clothes.” She adds, “The general mood in fashion is somewhat conservative due to the economy. It’s not a risk-taking moment for most people. Consumers have retreated and stores are worried.” Dutch designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren posit, “Avant-garde fashion probably exists out there, but it is somewhere on the streets … what is avant-garde today is mainstream tomorrow. It can be copied and marginalized very easily.” Luxury-industry consultant Concetta Lanciaux, based in Paris, says younger generations don't want avant-garde. “Avant-garde is the desire to break with the establishment, and today the desire is the opposite.”

We disagree with Lanciaux. We might be seeing less avant-garde designs on the runways, but that doesn't mean we don't want them. We're of the younger generation, and fashion to us has always been about developing a personal sense of style that separates one from everyone else. Indeed, shows like Pugh's and Maison Martin Margiela's are two we look forward to more than any others because we know we're in for something completely unexpected. And in a time when consumers are spending so much more selectively, won't they seek out unique items that truly give them a reason to part with some cash? It seems you can't walk two feet without bumping into someone who's striving to stand out. Look at Rihanna in her diamond eye patch, and Beyoncé in her Gareth Pugh and Theirry Mugler. And everyone knows female pop stars are the heartbeat of the needs and desires of the cultural landscape of the universe.

Madonna Is Sad

Madonna is sad, she told the AP this Sunday. She is listless and depressed. It's not, as one might imagine, about the fact that she is 50 years old and spends most evenings wearing a metal leotard and gyrating in front of gay men on a tour called Sticky and Sweet. That is the one thing the multigagillionaire pop singer is happy about. "I feel very blessed and very lucky that I have the opportunity to do what I do in my professional life," she told the news service. It is her "personal life" that she is sad about, she said. And we know she's not just talking about her divorce. She's talking about betrayal. Your betrayal, Alexander Rodriguez, which the Post exposed today when they published the irrefutable report that you have been backing out of your private classes at the Kabbalah center. "Sources" say that you are "bored" with the religion and that your interest is waning. Is your interest in Madonna waning? she wonders. This, we know, is what is making Madonna sad. And until you recover your interest in the Tanakh, you can bet she will continue to be morose. Sadder than when she wrote "This Used to Be My Playground," or the dark period when she penned "Live to Tell." Sadder than "Rain." Why do you want to make Madonna this sad, Alexander Rodriguez?

Just Another Media-Layoff Monday

In today's media-layoff news, some money magazines deny that they're headed to Russia, all the People in London are headed home, and the Star-Ledger no longer has very many opinions. Or even any. It's a new week in media layoffs, and here's how it has begun:

• Popular national news sheet USA Today is laying off twenty staffers, effective in early December. This is just sad. Who doesn't love that paper? [Romenesko]

• The Star-Ledger of New Jersey is becoming very, very impartial, as all the staffers on its editorial board have taken buyouts. [Editor & Publisher]

• Over the weekend, the Russian press gleefully reported that American money mag Forbes is being sold to a Moscow-based private-equity firm still swimming in money. Today, however, Forbes is totally, totally denying this story, so don't even ask about it, okay?
[Alley Insider]

• Alpha Media, on the other hand, home of Maxim and Blender, which was already sold to a private-equity group only a year ago for a probably regrettable $250 million, is now likely to be handed over to creditors due to plummeting ad-sales revenue. Publisher Felix Dennis, however, has already taken off with the cash and the Tila Tequila cover stories. [FishbowlNY/Mediabistro]

• Even-less-reliable gossip title Life & Style isn't faring much better, as its fashion director and deputy art director have departed. [BaconsBlog]

The Economy Robs Fashion Companies of Town Cars, First-Class Air Travel

In more bullish economic times, fashion — like investment banking — was an industry for those who appreciated life's finer things. Like Town Cars, extra elbow room in business or first class, getting to fly anywhere at all, and, once you got there, taking a Town Car to the five-star hotel that offers Ladurée macaroons and Veuve Clicquot on arrival, even if you're in Asia. Investment bankers have had to cut back on these luxuries, and now they can take solace in knowing they won't rough it alone. The fashion industry will join them, reducing costs by eliminating things like Town Cars, first-class air travel, and expensive hotels in "luxe foreign lands," according to WWD. Fashion companies made the "easy cuts first," like the company Christmas party, but nothing else was so easy to relinquish.

[T]he poor economy is forcing fashion companies to take a long, hard look at the way they do business. In an industry that once thought nothing of sending dozens of people to Europe or Asia via business-class travel to stay at five-star hotels for weeks is eliminating nonessential trips, asking employees to go coach and, if possible, videoconferencing instead of getting on a plane at all.

Sure, they looked long and hard, but did they look long and hard enough? We are horrified. The scene is especially dismal at Liz Claiborne, which has taken a beating in this economic climate:

[S]ince midsummer, Claiborne has imposed restrictions on flights and hotels, such as coach class travel on all domestic, intra-European and intra-Asian flights and stays only in corporately approved hotels.

Things are even more dour at Nicole Miller:

Using town cars has been eliminated, and his 86 staffers are being encouraged to take the subway more frequently or taxis if need be. In regard to out-of-town travel, employees are encouraged to find cheaper flights and less expensive accommodations, said [president and CEO Bud] Konheim, adding, “We’re Red Roofing it,” referring to the low-budget hotels.

The Red Roof Inn and the soles on a pair of Christian Louboutins might both be red, but they most certainly do not mix. Honestly, they may as well (gasp) camp. Over at Lacoste, the holiday party has been disgustingly consolidated with the January sales meeting. The company's CEO told WWD, "It’s not that [canceling the party] saves such a significant amount of money, but it’s symbolic and sends the right message in difficult times." Oh woe are those employees. They can't even drink it off.

The End Is Nigher

When Houghton Mifflin (publisher of Philip Roth and Jonathan Safran Foer) merged with Harcourt just about a year ago — resulting in the laying off of four editors and a publisher and the cutting of future lists by about 25 percent — the president of the merged group spoke of "an exciting future ahead." Today, Publishers Weekly confirms that the company is halting all acquisitions (temporarily, they insist). Spokesman Josef Blumenfeld told the trade mag, "It's a symbol of doing things smarter, it's not an indicator of the end of literature." Well, not all of literature, maybe. Suddenly, bloated Doubleday — where sixteen staffers were laid off three weeks ago — looks like a pretty solid place to be. Look for skyrocketing grad-school applications. Franz Ferdinand, 2.0

Franz, we believe.

On their forthcoming album, Tonight, Franz Ferdinand go places they've never been. Strange places! The first two tracks to have seen some sort of official release are "Lucid Dreams," released this summer on iTunes and on the soundtrack to the game Madden 2009, and "Ulysses," the first official single, now streaming on the band's MySpace. "Ulysses" is the odder of the two, with its druggy, morning-after tale staggering through disco beats and waves of proggy synth. The extended final album version of "Lucid Dreams," not yet available, is rumored to be the most exotic track on the record, sprawling out into an eight-minute trance-dance party. Here, it just sounds like a Franz Ferdinand song.

Will Fox News Respond to MSNBC’s Left Swing by Turning Even More Right?

For twelve years, Alan Colmes suffered as the (nearly) lone token liberal voice crying out in the vast right-wing maelstrom that is Fox News. As one half of the 9 p.m. stalwart Hannity & Colmes, the commentator and radio host lent a sense of even-handedness to the network's prime-time lineup, coming sandwiched between Bill O'Reilly's Factor and On the Record with Greta van Susteren. Now he's leaving the show to develop a weekend program and focus more on his radio duties. He'll remain on as a liberal opinionator for the network. The show was the second most popular on the network for most of its run, and frequently captured the No. 1 spot in the hour.

But now that Colmes is leaving, some are wondering whether another liberal voice will replace him, or whether the popular Sean Hannity will just take over the show on his own and model it after his Hannity's America weekend show. After all, if viewers want to hear a lefty voice they're probably already tuning in to Rachel Maddow over at MSNBC. A straight conservative show might better capitalize on the Factor lead-in. We didn't think this was really possible, but is the battle between the two cable networks about to get even more polarized?

‘Lake City’ Directors Hunter Hill and Perry Moore on Gay Superheroes and Their Maurice Sendak Documentary

Southerners turned New Yorkers Hunter Hill and Perry Moore kept a picture of Sissy Spacek tacked on the wall while they wrote Lake City, a southern drama about a reunion between a mother and son years after a family tragedy. They got her to star, along with Troy Garrity (Jane Fonda’s son), Rebecca Romijn, Drea De Matteo, and, oddly enough, Dave Matthews. Lake City hit theaters on Friday, the same day as some vampire-themed blockbuster. Hunter and Moore, partners in life as well as in business, spoke to Vulture about co-directing on a shoestring budget, the Maurice Sendak documentary they're making with Spike Jonze, and Showtime's gay-superhero show based on Moore's novel.

This story is based on an actual childhood experience of Hunter’s. What made you decide that this would make a good movie?
Hill: Well, the story, the crux of the movie were fragmented images that I had from childhood, from my best friend. He died in a very similar way as in the movie. Just watching the family, how different families handle death, you know — some people run from that, some people embrace it.

You spent several years writing this and then got a commitment from Spacek. What if she had turned you down?
Hill: Sissy was the inspiration. We went down to visit Sissy in Virginia, had lunch, she had read the script, and she responded to the very personal situation herself, because she had also had some friends in similar situations.

I heard Spacek brought her own furniture to the set, and Rebecca Romijn used her own clothing?
Hill: Yeah. We shot on a modest budget and the house in the script was always a central character, and it was so important that we find the right place. Every other house we looked at was up and running, and the one we chose was an abandoned house — no running water, no electricity, we only could use half the house. It was empty. So Sissy, and Jack Fisk, who’s her husband —

Moore: Jack is a renowned production designer in his own right [he’s Oscar-nominated]. And Hunter had a panic attack a few days before we started shooting that there wasn’t enough furniture in the house, so Sissy and Jack loaded up their truck with a lot of her own childhood furniture.

Hill: It was a whole flatbed truck full of furniture. The bed in Clayton’s room, the boy’s room in the movie, that was Sissy’s childhood bed. She told stories how she used to walk it back and forth like a balancing beam when she was a little girl in Texas.

Moore: Troy [Garrity] found [Spacek’s] daughter’s diary in it when we were shooting a scene one day. We quickly gave it back to her. I mean, talk about Method acting.

How is it working as two directors?
Moore: We split up the work. We’d make sure that as two directors, we always spoke to the crew and the cast in one voice. It was a luxury, I think. It’s funny when people ask, “What’s it like with two directors?” I always feel like, What’s it like with one director? How do you have time to get all that stuff done? It’s probably easier since Hunter and I live together and do most things in our life together. We sort of have telepathic communication, I think, at this point, that makes it easier to do things together. I think that’s probably an advantage, working together.

Tatum O’Neal was originally cast in the role that Drea De Matteo played?
Moore: Tatum was shooting a series. She was supposed to do it, and she thought she’d be finished in time, and then she wasn’t.

Hill: And then we went right to Drea. She almost channeled Tatum in a crazy way. And, she came in, with the flu. She was there for one night, it was pouring down rain, she was on antibiotics.

Moore: And we had one lamp to knock over in that scene. We did a couple takes, and she was the engine that turned that scene. It was a very long take, and a very emotionally tense moment, and she had to knock this lamp over in the exact same spot without breaking it every time, and she did it every time.

It was just announced that Showtime picked up Hero, your book about a gay superhero, for a series to be produced by Stan Lee. Have you started working on the script?

Moore: Oh yes, we’re in the middle of it. That, and the next book, I’m hard at work on that too.

Is that a sequel to Hero?
Moore: We have a sequel to Hero, and another book, called The Way of the Wolf Book 1: Fire, which is a little more in the vein of Twilight. It’s a new fantasy series. I like rewriting mythology — C.S. Lewis was good about this, too — and I am rewriting the werewolf mythology. I combine a lot of American folklore, French folklore, Japanese folklore. I center it around the triplets, a young girl and her two brothers.

You are co-directing a documentary on Maurice Sendak with Spike Jonze. When will that be out?
Hill: We’re in the edit stages now. Maurice is a fascinating character, and people don’t know much about his personal life.” Maurice is an 8-year-old in an 80-year-old’s body. He’s just razor-sharp and really funny. So we’re very excited about that.

Moore: Maurice’s favorite actress is Sissy Spacek.

Hill: When we were shooting Lake City, he asked if he could come. He said, “Couldn’t I be the little Jewish man that runs a little cart in the small town?”

Moore: It was beautiful.

What a Tease: ‘Californication’

"La Ronde" finds Marcy in treatment; Ashby, Charlie, Hank and Karen keeping (most of) their libidinal impulses in check; and Californication getting all literary.

Fornication
Or the lack thereof: Ashby has been staying away from Mia and is still thinking about one-who-got-away Janie Jones. That Hank's next interview with J.J. is after dark makes Ashby a little jealous — because if it's after seven, it's a date. Each main character uses that logic at least once in this episode, but we're not going to bother with that repetition; it's not one of Californication's better gags.

Anyway, it does indeed seem to be a date for Janie and Hank: There's an art gallery and cheap wine in plastic cups and everything. Unfortunately, it turns out this is guru Julian's art gallery, so he, and Hank's baby mama, Sonja, are also part of the date. Julian, macking on Janie, exhibits quite the repertoire of pickup lines: "Have you experienced childbirth? But not orgasmic childbirth? Are you menstruating right now?" And then he starts groping Hank. Proving herself about the classiest lady to ever catch Hank's eye, Janie gets her and Hank the hell out of there and on to the date's natural conclusion: bringing Hank home. She finds vasectomized men, marked as they evidently are by commitment and sacrifice, very alluring. Hank plays that up by turning her down, explaining that he wouldn't want just a one-night stand with her.

Meanwhile, Karen is on her own date — with Ashby. He's sent his driver to pick her up and bring her to the otherwise empty Hollywood Bowl, where he's arranged for Lili Haydn to play the sort of god-awful chick music that passes for part of a mature date in Ashby's perverse mind. As we feared, Karen has a great time. Ashby delivers a spiel about how she reminds him of someone, she suggests he take that woman out on a date, he insists he's learned from his mistakes — and then he lunges in for the kiss. She rebuffs him. Twice.

Family
Meanwhile, Marcy has finally made it to rehab, so Charlie is still alone with Daisy. She's enjoying the novelty of living a normal life, working (for free) as the waxery's receptionist, dating a guy who works at the Sharper Image across the street, and liking the new Runkle alternative family. Needless to say, she's a great comfort to Charlie as he worries about Marcy's coke problem — and about what's going to happen to their sex life without the coke. But this is the new, (un)improved-formula, abstinent Californication: She comforts him with Dirty Dancing and with some very chaste dancing, not any of her porn-goddess skills. But it's not an entirely sexless episode — just about keeping things in the family.

After turning down Janie Jones, Hank drops by Karen's place to brag about his self-cockblocking redemption and to, as she puts it, look for some sort of reward. After providing said reward, she fends off Hank's pillow talk and questions about her evening by trying to fire him up again, only to discover a lump. Given that the episode takes its title from Arthur Schnitzler's play about syphilis making the rounds in slutty turn-of-the-century Vienna, we'd assume that she's found an oozing, inflamed sore on Hank's dick. That would be a fascinating and apt plot development, but it seems more likely that our Hank is up for a cancer scare in the next episode.

Richie Rich and Daniel Vosovic Unite for Britney Spears

At the risk of sounding like that girl, we're just going to come out and say it: We're excited about Britney's new album. There. Even if it is called Circus and the Photoshopping in the promo shots gives her a weird, scary glow and she's wearing last season's Rodarte, "Womanizer" still makes working out suck a lot less for us. Heatherette designer Richie Rich and Project Runway runner-up Daniel Vosovic must be excited, too, because they're judging the "Britney Spears Biggest Fan Contest" on 9 p.m. on December 1, the night before her album drops (and record sales defy the economy). Starting at 9 p.m. you can sign up for the contest at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square and shake your stuff for Richie and Daniel. According to Britney's MySpace page, "Contestants may sing, dance, imitate, or even profess their love for Britney Spears." Who better to assess who's most Britney-like than the designer of a defunct glitter-inspired fashion line and an ex–reality star riding his fame to its absolute maximum? Not that we don't love you both dearly, but you know what we would really like? If you designed some more clothes. There. We said it.

Donnie Walsh’s Trades So Good They May Even Benefit the Yankees

LeBron and CC, BFFs.

Knicks president Donnie Walsh is getting high grades for Friday’s trades of Jamal Crawford, Zach Randolph, and Mardy Collins, because it clears cap space for 2010 when, well, you know by now. In the span of a few hours, Walsh undid enough of Isiah Thomas’s shortsighted moves that the Knicks are in position to offer a max contract to a certain Cavaliers superstar — and probably another good player or two — even if he doesn’t clear out any further bad contracts. (We’re looking at you, Eddy Curry.)

But Walsh’s moves may impact more than just the Knicks roster. See, presumed future-Knick LeBron James is friends with free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia from the days they were both in Cleveland. Sabathia, of course, is deciding — perhaps right this very second — which big-money contract to accept. And ESPN’s Buster Olney thinks that the idea that his buddy might be a Knick two years from now could help sway him to sign with the Yankees. (Olney says factors like these may serve as tiebreakers since Sabathia is the type to consider more than just money, though it certainly won't hurt that the Yankees will likely be offering the most cash, as well.) So now that Walsh has pretty much locked up James and Sabathia, perhaps he could get started on a plan to keep Brett Favre from retiring. After all, he'll need to have something to do between now and 2010.

Dolph Lundgren, You Deeply Disappoint Us

When A&E this morning announced the new reality TV show Steven Seagal: Lawman, about the action hero's second act as a New Orleans deputy, we marveled at his gumption and stick-to-it-iveness. We were reminded of other inspirational, unpredictable second acts, and we immediately thought of other admirable men, like the political advertising genius Chuck Norris, the Method actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, and that great American patriot Arnold Schwarzenegger. You know who we didn't think about? Dolph Lundgren.

We knew that pathetic eighties girlie-men like Dustin Hoffman and Chevy Chase would amount to little outside of Hollywood — but we expected more out of Dolph. Other action stars have demonstrated true courage by imagining careers outside of anticommunist action thrillers, while Dolph has cowered in his little corner: a scared little boy, afraid of taking real risks. Just look at the record:

Chuck Norris: With one show, Walker, Texas Ranger, Norris ended history’s shameful segregation of cowboys and martial artists. Then he supported Mike Huckabee, transforming him from also-ran to contender. Had Norris not been held back, he would have kicked Obama's ass.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Schwarzenegger did what he could to change the world within the studio system, using Kindergarten Cop to prove that threatening brutes could be caring fathers too (paving the way for Vin Diesel and the Rock). But that wasn't enough: His election as Governator broke barriers for Austrians, orgy enthusiasts, ass gropers, and Hummer enthusiasts.

Steven Seagal: Thanks to the brave work of this man, action films are no longer the domain of fit or thin action actors. He never spoke about it, but the quiet bulk of his moral authority transformed the genre into something bigger, even as he launched the 240-calorie energy drink Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt. Now he's saving real lives as a deputy in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. With his bare hands.

Jean-Claude Van Damme: Nearly consigned to a life of copycat action films like Lundgren's, Van Damme broke with Lundgren after the Universal Soldier films and reclaimed his dignity in this year’s dizzying metaphysical heist film JVCD, revealing himself to be an introspective postmodern conversationalist and avant-garde animal lover.

And you, Dolph? What have you done? Other than direct yourself in one straight-to-DVD, filmed-in-Bulgaria action flick after the next, as another crazy vigilante, another terrifying Russian, another martial artist named Lance Rockford working to stop the terrorists for a president played by Jerry Springer… What have you done outside of your comfort zone? Nothing. Fraidy-cat.

Dolph, please take a chance. You're from the land of August Strindberg, Ingmar Bergman, Victor Sjöström, and the world's most famous singing chef — don't hide your genius from the light. Rip it out with your bare hands and drop-kick it back into the ring.

Shopbop.com Model Looks Exactly Like Ashley Dupré

From left, Dupré, Shopbop's look-alike.

We're used to a daily influx of shopping e-mails and gave Shopbop.com's a cursory glance yesterday. Until we were stopped in our tracks. That model looked awfully familiar to us. It took us a whole ten seconds to realize she bore an uncanny resemblance to hooker supreme Ashley Dupré. Shopbop's model's even styled similarly to Dupré's recent People magazine shot (inset). The hair is brushed back and wavy; the makeup is perfectly pink. The eyes stare at us with that certain hint of … longing perhaps? We love online shopping, but when you reach the point that certain e-mail models start to look like famous prostitutes, it's time to hit delete.

Artist Shai Azoulay Falls Asleep at the Canvas

Shai Azoulay's Dream (2008).

If the sleep of reason creates monsters, does the sleep of creativity create … paintings? Here, in Shai Azoulay's Dream — an MFA-appropriate version of the Brothers Grimm's "The Elves and the Shoemaker" — an artist snoozes in his atelier while little paint sprites (pigment figments?) amass around a pristine canvas. Whether they're about to pounce or leave it in a state of Malevichean whiteness is up in the air, but let's say they go to town. After all, the cold is making everyone a little sleepy, and the idea of waking up to a finished spreadsheet (or legal brief, or blog post) is too good a fantasy to resist. On view at Participant Inc. through December 21.

Comedian Horatio Sanz Has Dropped About 100 Pounds

When we ran into Saturday Night Live alum Horatio Sanz at the Montblanc-sponsored "24-Hour Plays" last week, we couldn't help but notice how trim he looked! We asked him if he'd lost weight. "I’ve been eating better," he admitted. "I’ve been trying to come up with a joke about how I’ve lost weight and I was going to say, 'I stopped putting nuts in my sundaes.'" Apparently, he's lost about 100 pounds. Roughly. "I never weighed myself when I was at my fattest, because I was scared I might die," he said. He's been working out, too. Now, if he goes back on SNL to play new Commerce secretary Bill Richardson (the invitation's still open, we hear), he'll have to wear a pillow on his belly!

Everyone Is Struggling

Even gold-diggers are not immune to the recession: "Back at Bagatelle, three young beautiful Turks smoke Camels outside in the cold. One is blonde, one is brunette and one is shivering in a T-shirt that reads 'I Heart NY.' Two appear to be models, or at least 'models.' (The other works in finance.) 'When we go out there are usually four guys buying us drinks. Now there is only one,' sighs the petite 24-year-old brunette. 'Guys just aren't going out as much. Plus, men aren't buying bottle service so there are no tables to invite women back to.' The other two nod ruefully." [Page Six Magazine]

The Artist in Love With the Un-Boyfriend

Once a week, Daily Intel takes a peek at what your friends and neighbors are doing behind doors left slightly ajar. Today, The Artist in Love With the Un-Boyfriend, 23, female, Bensonhurst, heterosexual, single.

DAY ONE
3 a.m.: A call from my Un-Boyfriend. He's not my boyfriend and probably never will be, due to the long distances, transient lifestyles, and aversion to labels and commitment on both ends. And yet we talk for hours, we write letters, and when we see each other, we spend all day in bed, and I'm terribly afraid that I might be in love with him, though I'd never say that out loud. I date other people, hoping to find someone to divert my attention. But most boys only reinforce the reasons why Un-Boyfriend is different and special.
3:30 a.m. Conversation leaves me pensive and annoyed, reminded of all the reasons the "un" prefix will never go away. Sometimes I wish my heart weren't so in his claws. Restless sleeping.

10:15 a.m.: Dream. Last weekend I made out with a stranger in the hallway of my building during a party, which was nice until he started jousting me in the leg with his penis. In the dream, he jumped out at me from behind a dark corner, wide-eyed and not letting me pass. I realize I have unresolved issues with men who are pushy.
2:30 p.m.: I meet my male friend Ben for burritos and coffee. We bitch about being in the throes of love and unemployment. Waitress gives me the gaydar scan. I cut my hair pixie-short last week, and ever since, I've been getting more attention from girls and boys alike.
7 p.m.: Ben comes to my art studio, slowly realizes that every beautiful naked boy and girl I have painted thus far are portraits of people he knows. Awkward tension ensues.
10:35 p.m.: Un-Boyfriend calls to tell me that he just befriended someone who knows me. Does that mean he talks about me to other people? I pine.
11 p.m.: Beer and TV in the basement with building friends. Conversation inevitably turns to "Which celebrities would you fuck?"

DAY TWO
5 a.m.: Beer run with Jen. The cute young bodega guy, Adnan, is our buddy, and is totally in love with Jen, so the beer is free. Adnan goes into the basement to bring us his four-week-old kittens.
7:50 a.m.: I finally crawl into bed, and muster the strength for an immensely satisfying drunken masturbation before I sleep. I fantasize about having good, sleepy morning sex with Un-Boyfriend.
4 p.m.: Phone interview for a new day job. The fact that my potential employer called at 4 p.m. regarding an education position and I was still lying in bed in my underwear, totally hung-over, reading erotic fiction, makes me wonder if I am suited to be a role model for children.
6:20 p.m.: I IM with a guy I dated last month. It sort of fell off when we both got busy, and he asks me where I've been. I consider inviting him out to the party tonight, but I'd rather hang out with a guy who might come, so I refrain. Another one bites the dust.
8 p.m.: Help set up for the party. The first few bands play and I am bored, compulsively checking my phone.
9:50 p.m.: I dance like a motherfucker.
11:30 p.m.: On my way to the bathroom, a very beautiful man named Shea asks me my name. After I tell him, he says, "I love that name, but would you mind if I just called you Beautiful instead?" Normally this sort of line would irritate me, but somehow he pulls it off.

DAY THREE
3:20 a.m.: I finally sit and have a conversation with this Shea character. He's real cute, but I am quickly bored.
5 a.m.: Still talking to Shea. The party is petering out. Out of nowhere, he tells me he has never seen a White Girl "with such a black girl's booty" (it's true, I get that a lot). He doesn't try to kiss me, he doesn't even touch me, he just leans in and asks me to feel his pulse on his neck, so I can see exactly how turned on he is. This creeps me out a bit, but I do it. I've had a beer or six, and while this isn't exactly what I was hoping for as far as things getting more interesting, it's certainly different.
5:15 a.m.: He starts asking me very personal questions about what I'm like in bed. I politely dodge the questions. Not getting the hint, he asks if I would mind if he touched himself while he talked to me. That's way over the line. I say good night.
6 a.m.: I fall asleep wondering how I let that go so far. I am too creeped out to masturbate.
10 a.m.: Shea calls. (SHIT! I forgot that I gave him my number early on.) He asks if I still want him to pose for a painting. He even offers to pay me to let him pose for me. (SHIT. I forgot that I had asked him to pose!) The thought crosses my mind that he may still be in my building hanging out, but I try not to think about it.
3:30 p.m.: Wake up for real, feel like shit.
6:30 p.m.: Me, my friend B, and Mel, one of my best friends from home, have dinner with my roommate, with whom Mel is romantically involved. Mel kisses me on the mouth, as per usual. Mel and roommate are holding hands under the table. I shoot Bea a "Thank you for inviting me to sleep over at your new place so I don't have to listen to them have sex" glance and she nods.
9:30 p.m.: Back at the house, I catch up with Mel for a few minutes, grab some things, and leave to go sleep at B’s. I’m such a good friend.
9:36 p.m.: I call B to tell her I'm on my way. Says she's actually kind of enjoying having the big empty place to herself (read: she wants to jerk off). Awkward.
10 p.m.: I hear roommate sex above, quarantine myself in the basement and figure I will hang out there until Mel and roommate fall asleep. It shouldn’t be too long, as Mel is jet-lagged. I call the Un-Boyfriend and he tells me he will visit at the end of the month. Mmmmm.
10:30 p.m.: Obsessive thinking about Un-Boyfriend. I met him when I was on tour with a band, and he was on his way to Mexico and caught a ride with us. We were immediately drawn to one another and had a lovely romantic few days together, and I went home. He’s always on the move, and we maneuver our paths to cross whenever we can. When we do, it's magical, and when we can't, we stay in close contact. Our friendship only grows more intense, but it's hard to imagine our affair ever being more than what it is. Despite my best efforts, he is the one I really think about.

DAY FOUR
3:30 a.m.: Still in the basement, waiting for the roommate sex to subside. Finally, I decide it's safe to go back inside. It is dark and quiet, but I can't sleep … I toss and turn. I've been too nocturnal in my unemployment.
6 a.m.: Finally, as I am on the verge of sleep, I hear them wake up. Thinking they have the house to themselves, they fool around quite vocally (note that there is only drywall between us, and sound-wise we might as well be in the same room). This is going to be awkward tomorrow.
11:15 a.m.: I wake up and check my e-mail. I got the job!
2 p.m.: Upon hearing my voice, my roommate worriedly asks how long I've been home.
5 p.m.: Painting at my art studio. That is one way to ease sexual tension. Despite all the men in my life, I haven’t had sex in a really long time. I can’t bring myself to fuck somebody unless I really like and trust them. Casual sex is theoretically appealing, but rarely works for me. Deep down I know that if Un-Boyfriend wasn't so impossible to have, I wouldn't be so enamored with him.
10 p.m.: WOW. I am probably 88 percent heterosexual, but for some reason ALL of the waitresses at the little Dominican diner we eat at are incredibly attractive to me. Full lips, big eyes, nice curves.

DAY FIVE
2 a.m.: Home again. In an attempt to break this whole semi-nocturnal lifestyle, I masturbate to fantasies of seducing a sexy Hemingway-type English professor.
10 a.m.: Wake up, work out, clean up.
1 p.m.: First day at the new job. It's trial-by-fire teaching. Relieved that goofing off with first-graders is totally fun.
9 p.m.: We head back to Brooklyn for a hilarious low-budget, oversexualized theatrical adaptation of Jurassic Park in a crazy little space above a grocery store. We drink forties and afterward run through the streets imitating raptors.
11:58 p.m.: I decide to sleep over at Mel's new place. This is our ritual. We stay up all night spooning and talking crudely about boys.

DAY SIX
2 a.m.: Mel is new to sex, and we talk about the ins and outs of it (wink), and I explain, in detail, my theories on how to give good head. She literally takes notes.
9 a.m.: Wake up spooning Mel. I forget how nice it is to have windows; my loft space has none.
11 a.m.: We go to my art studio. We muse about what a good place to have sex in it would be. I fantasize about all of the things I plan to do to the Un-Boyfriend.
9 p.m.: My neighbors have loud sex very, very often. At first I tried to ignore them, but now I tend to enjoy it. Tonight was one of those nights.
11:26 p.m.: I step outside for a minute and a car slows as it passes me: "Hey mami, come here! Get in!" This happens a lot. Sometimes it doesn’t faze me, and other times it makes me feel vulnerable and angry. Tonight was the latter.

DAY SEVEN
7 a.m.: I've taken to sleeping naked the past few days, as my loft-cave gets dreadfully warm with the surpassed-capacity of roommates all emitting sweaty young body heat. Too lazy to search for p.j.'s in the dark, I wrap myself in a too-small towel and hop down the stairs. It was pitch dark downstairs, and I bumped strait into my boxer-clad male roommate, whom I barely know, at the bottom of the staircase. Lots of awkward, accidental skin-touching ensues as we try to maneuver around each other. In spite of myself, I get turned on.
11:30 a.m.: I run errands and shop for booty pants. I invest in a hair straightener and some new eyeliner. Lately I've been wanting to put more effort into my appearance. Maybe I'm ovulating.
2 p.m.: Work with the kids. One little girl nicknames herself Mr. Butt.
7:30 p.m.: Meet for tea with a friend who works for a well-known sex blog. We read some sexy writing.

Totals: Zero acts of intercourse, fellatio, or cunnilingus; two acts of masturbation; one feeling of pulse upon request of very sketchy guy at party; three long phone chats with Un-Boyfriend; one dream of attack by bad make-out partner from previous week.

Seventh Generation Founder Responds to Complaints From Tenants About‘Awful’ Conditions

You've heard of those ecofriendly Seventh Generation housecleaning products, right? Well, here's an odd story. The guy who invented them just bought a $2.2 million co-op in the Upper East Side's sprawling, white-brick Manhattan House complex, where renters are considering suing over what they call awful conditions meant to drive them out so their units can go co-op. So the ecoguru releases this statement in his defense: "We must ensure that the practice of corporate responsibility is spread to every sector of society. Now is not the time to retreat in fear, but forge ahead to create a better and brighter world for all." Uh, okay, that's very inspiring, sir, but what exactly are you talking about? We mean, that is so vague it could almost be ad for Fantastik. [NYT via Curbed]
