Jets + Giants = Subway Series?

Anytime both New York teams are good at the same time, whether it’s the Yankees and Mets, or the Rangers and Islanders, everyone likes to toss out the Subway Series idea. It’s not enough for us to demand championships; we have to demand that the runners-up can take a cab ride to see the trophy. But the “Subway Series” is an ideal that’s always more exciting in theory than it is in practice: Other than the Roger Clemens bat-throwing incident, the 2000 World Series was a bit of a dud. Let’s try to keep our enthusiasm in check here, but right now it looks like the two best teams in the NFL play in the same building. Are you prepared for a Jets-Giants Super Bowl?

First, the Jets. What was most shocking about their 34–13 shellacking of the previously undefeated Tennessee Titans — in Nashville — was that it wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Jets dominated from the first play. Remember, the Titans were undefeated coming in, and they were hammered at home. Oh, and you can shelve those theories about Brett Favre being mentally stuck in Green Bay; he’s clicking with Jets receivers as well as he ever did with Antonio Freeman and Donald Driver in Wisconsin. With the win in New England two Thursdays ago, Favre and the Jets banished the memory of their awkward shotgun marriage. This is his team, and they’re responding to him in a way that most of his later Packers teams never did. The Jets have five winnable games to end the season. If they play like they have the last two weeks, they’ll win them all … and might just end up with home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

Which is going to cause some scheduling headaches in the Meadowlands, because the Giants pretty much clinched their own home-field advantage in the NFC. The upstart Arizona Cardinals, one of the only legitimate challengers to the Giants' supremacy, were no match. The Giants are now 10–1, two games ahead of their closest competitors. They have no legitimate challengers in the conference and, now that the Titans have lost, are universally considered the best team in the NFL.

So let it begin: A Super Bowl Subway Series — if subways went to East Rutherford, anyway — is more likely now that it has possibly ever been. Imagine what would happen if both the AFC and NFC Championship games were held on the same Sunday at the same stadium in New Jersey? That’ll be a busy Meadowlands grounds crew. And the Jets and Giants could play for the right to face each other … in Tampa.

SAG Seeks Authorization to Strike, Destroy What’s Left of Hollywood

Uh-oh! Following the breakdown of federally mediated negotiations between the Screen Actors Guild and Hollywood studios this week, the union is asking its 120,000 members to vote for the authorization of an actors' strike. SAG's contract expired in June, and talks on Thursday and Friday were the first between the two sides in four months, though "neither side budged significantly … with negotiators spending much of the time reiterating previous positions," according to Variety. The sticking point is, among other really boring things, the studios' insistence on the right to use nonunion actors for new-media productions without paying them residuals. If you're still awake after reading the previous sentence, you'll likely also be interested to know that no timetable has been set for a vote, but, hypothetically, a strike could happen soon enough to prevent the Golden Globe Awards from taking place on January 11, though we'd imagine there would also be a downside.

Georgina Bloomberg Gets Embarrassing Photo Revenge on Dad

What, no old-school Lacoste?

Last week we marveled at the gall of professional equestrienne Georgina Bloomberg for talking about how totally not rich she is. This weekend, she was profiled in Page Six Magazine and earned back our love, mostly because she dished about her dad, Mayor Mike. Her parents' divorce was "the best thing that ever happened," she said, because it allowed her parents to be friends again. And also, she reveals, Hizzoner has a much smaller ego now that he's in office. From the story:

"When he was just a businessman, he was pretty egotistical. People were telling him how great he was every day. Politics has humbled him. Now he seems to really want to hear what I have to say, and I wouldn't have said that a few years ago — but I've also become less of a brat."

Georgina also provided some adorable pictures from her childhood for pagesix.com, including several of the mayor in the mid-eighties, like the one above. This, quite frankly, seems like proof the mayor is able to laugh at himself these days. Otherwise he would have definitely destroyed all pictures of him looking like Gene Hackman in the Poseidon Adventure years ago.

Economy to Sap the Fabulous From February Fashion Week

During Fashion Week, pockets of the city are transformed into a fantasyland. People who actually wear things like harem pants can do so to complimentary rather than confused stares while booze, editors, designers, and models run wild and free. But come February, the economy will rain on that all too fabulous parade. It's too soon to say just how the economic downturn will affect Fashion Week in February, but expect it to be anything but immune. IMG recently sent out venue packages to designers so they can reserve Bryant Park for their shows, and reservations are trickling in. We don't yet know if many designers will — and it pains us to type this — skip their runway shows this season. However, Fashion Week den mother Fern Mallis says she's already received inquiries from designers who usually don't show in the tents about showing in the tents in February, where the costs are lower than off-site.

Not that any fashion show is cheap — they can easily cost $150,000 or more. But young designers without, say, Calvin Klein–size bank accounts might favor presentations this season, which are cheaper than runway shows. Mallis is also encouraging young designers in similar markets to present their collections together to reduce costs. And as for the free booze? It might run free, but not nearly as wild. Mallis expects houses to cut back on extravagant events and parties. “Editors and guests that need to go to shows often have to go to store openings and other parties,” Mallis told WWD. “This year, we are anticipating we might see less of that happening.” Booooo. Next thing you know they'll take away our gift bags and everything will fall apart.

Are Fashion Shows Vulnerable? [WWD]

Obama to Roll Out Economic Team and Plans Today

Also, he got some exercise by playing basketball at his daughters' school. Sorry, what did you accomplish this weekend again?

Still 57 days away from his arrival in office, Barack Obama will roll out his economic team and portions of his sweeping recovery agenda later today. Over the weekend we learned that New York Federal Reserve president Timothy Geithner will be Obama's Treasury secretary, and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson will be named Commerce secretary. Clinton Treasury chief Larry Summers will head up Obama's National Economic Council, and just this morning Politico also reported that the president-elect will tap Berkeley professor Christina Romer to head his Council of Economic Advisers (she once co-wrote a paper called "What Ends Recessions"!).

Alongside the announcement of these appointees come reports that Obama has broadly expanded the scope of his economic plan, which has ballooned from the $175 billion he spoke of last month to somewhere in the realm of $500 to $700 billion. He hopes to get this bill from Congress on his very first day in office, according to Democratic congressional allies. In addition, adviser David Axelrod said yesterday that Obama is considering allowing the Bush tax cuts on the wealthy to expire in 2010 rather than repealing them right off the bat.

Remember when we had a president who relaxed on the weekends and vacationed the week of Thanksgiving?

Last week brought closing announcements for Broadway's American Buffalo and 13, and yesterday Playbill reported that Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein will close on January 4: "In these uncertain economic times, my partners and I have decided to end our run on Broadway and focus our efforts on the first national tour, which will launch in September 2009," says producer Robert F.X. Robert Rubin Helped Break Citigroup and Now He Must Fix It

Over the weekend, federal regulators met with Citigroup executives to save the banking giant from collapse, and ultimately decided to provide the bank with $306 billion in loans and securities and a direct investment of about $20 billion. While they were hammering out that plan, the Times hammered former Treasury secretary, current Citigroup director, and Obama economic adviser Robert E. Rubin, who, according to the Times account, played a "pivotal role" in the bank's undoing by pushing its executives to move into the packaging and trading of the now-infamous collateralized debt obligations.

“Chuck Prince going down to the corporate investment bank in late 2002 was the start of that process,” a former Citigroup executive said of the bank’s big C.D.O. push. “Chuck was totally new to the job. He didn’t know a C.D.O. from a grocery list, so he looked for someone for advice and support. That person was Rubin. And Rubin had always been an advocate of being more aggressive in the capital markets arena. He would say, ‘You have to take more risk if you want to earn more.’ "

According to current and former colleagues, he believed that Citigroup was falling behind rivals like Morgan Stanley and Goldman, and he pushed to bulk up the bank’s high-growth fixed-income trading, including the C.D.O. business.

And:

Former colleagues said Mr. Rubin also encouraged Mr. Prince to broaden the bank’s appetite for risk, provided that it also upgraded oversight — though the Federal Reserve later would conclude that the bank’s oversight remained inadequate.

And:

[S]ince joining Citigroup in 1999 as a trusted adviser to the bank’s senior executives, Mr. Rubin, who is an economic adviser on the transition team of President-elect Barack Obama, has sat atop a bank that has been roiled by one financial miscue after another.

Ouch. That last one was just mean. But still. Considering that, as a Sunday Times piece pointed out, Obama's economic department is made up almost entirely of "Rubinistas" — protégés of Rubin — this seems a little awkward. We're giving the guys that broke the system the contract for the reconstruction project?

Vera Farmiga and George Clooney to Join Mile-High Club

The Air Up There: Vera Farmiga has joined George Clooney in Jason Reitman's upcoming comedy Up in the Air. The story focuses on a stressed out human-resources executive (Clooney) whose only joy in life becomes the prospect of reaching a million frequent-flier miles, a goal he single-mindedly pursues as the rest of his life falls apart. Farmiga's character plays an equally busy businesswoman who falls for Clooney in airports and hotels across the country. Thanks to Toby Flenderson and now Clooney, we can unequivocally say that human-resources comedy is here to stay. [Variety]

Twice Bitten: Summit Entertainment officially gave New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, the green light this week, just one day after the original came out. In this sequel Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) must leave Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) to keep her safe from other vampires. New Moon is the second of four vampire love books by Stephenie Meyer, all of which Summit is expected to turn into movies. Your little sister hasn't been this psyched since Friday. [Variety]

Casting Couch: George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus have signed on to join Jackie Chan in his rip-roaring comedy The Spy Next Door. The movie centers on Chan, who is asked to babysit his neighbor's children and must protect them from secret agents after one of the kids accidentally downloads a confidential spy code. Lopez and Cyrus will play two CIA agents, giving this movie more demographic appeal (Asians, Hispanics, Rednecks) than anything since Revenge of the Nerds. [Variety]

It's a Deal: French director Pascal Laugier, who is on tap to direct a remake of Clive Barker's Hellraiser, will also head up Paramount Vantage's horror thriller Details from his own script. The story centers on a young woman who disappears after awakening supernatural forces that inhabit the random patterns of everyday objects. The script was rewritten from its original version, when it was about an ambiguously gay men's magazine that put Kevin Federline on its cover. [Variety]

Leap to Dublin: Hilary and Jackie director Anand Tucker is in talks to direct Amy Adams in Spyglass' upcoming Leap Year. The romantic comedy tells the story of a woman who comes up with a plan to travel to Dublin to propose to a man on February 29, when according to Irish tradition the man must say yes, but she encounters trouble along the way. [HR]

Finally, a Cop Drama: NBC's drama pilot Lost and Found has picked up Josh Cooke to co-star and Michael Engler to direct. The show focuses on an offbeat L.A. detective who butts heads with her superiors and, as punishment, is sent to work on John and Jane Doe cases. Cooke plays her shrink. Because if TV needs anything right now, it's another cop drama. [HR]
