Oscar Futures: Can Kate Beat Meryl?

Every week between now and February 2, when the nominations are announced, movies and stars will help themselves — or, sometimes, hurt themselves — in the Oscar race. Vulture's Oscar Futures will listen to insider gossip, comb the Oscar blogs, and out-and-out guess when necessary to track who's up, who's down, and who's currently leading the race for a coveted nomination.

Best Picture UP: Slumdog Millionaire. Rave reviews, great (per-screen) box office, and passionate supporters make this once-underdog seem like the only sure-bet nominee so far. DOWN: Australia. Well, it's finally finished, and reviews are in: It's just okay.
CURRENT PREDIX: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, Revolutionary Road, Slumdog Millionaire, Wall-E
Best Director UP: Jonathan Demme, Rachel Getting Married. Roger Ebert seems to think he's "a lock." Plus, voters got screeners of his movie this week. DOWN: Sam Mendes, Revolutionary Road. Is Road too much like American Beauty? Is he just repeating himself? The Hollywood Reporter thinks so.
CURRENT PREDIX: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire; David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; Sam Mendes, Revolutionary Road; Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight; Gus Van Sant, Milk
Best Actor UP: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler. Following his apology for using a homophobic slur in an interview last Monday, he's impressively managed to avoid saying anything egregiously stupid for an entire week. DOWN: Hugh Jackman, Australia. Will anyone be able to look past his sexiness? Variety's Todd McCarthy sure can't: "Women and not a few men will marvel at a stripped-down Jackman's sculpted torso as he rinses himself off in the campfire light."
CURRENT PREDIX: Leonardo DiCaprio, Revolutionary Road; Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon; Sean Penn, Milk; Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Best Actress UP: Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road. With Meryl Streep getting mixed reviews for Doubt, is this Winslet's award to lose? Apparently she's "a revelation." DOWN: Angelina Jolie, The Changeling. Promoting her movie in the U.K. this week, she talked more about breast-feeding, her parents, and her imminent plans to quit acting. Her celebrity cost her a nomination last year — will it happen again?
CURRENT PREDIX: Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married; Angelina Jolie, Changeling; Kristin Scott Thomas, I've Loved You So Long; Meryl Streep, Doubt; Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road
Best Supporting Actor UP: Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road. "When Shannon is onscreen," says Variety, "it's impossible to watch anyone else"… DOWN: Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road. …Too bad he will definitely lose to Heath Ledger, who Roger Ebert's top-secret Oscar source claims will win, "period. For the other contenders, the nomination itself will be their reward."
CURRENT PREDIX: James Franco, Milk; Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt; Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight; Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire; Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road
Best Supporting Actress UP: Viola Davis, Doubt. Is she Doubt's best hope for an acting statue? After screenings last weekend, that's what some are saying. DOWN: Kathy Bates, Revolutionary Road. Did you know she was in this? Early reviews barely mention her.
CURRENT PREDIX: Penélope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona; Viola Davis, Doubt; Rosemarie DeWitt, Rachel Getting Married; Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; Kate Winslet, The Reader

All Eyes on Vikram Pandit

He's wearing sunglasses, so no one can see the tears in his eyes.

Today is very uncomfortable for Vikram Pandit. After a brief rally this morning due to reports of a possible merger, shares of Citigroup are on another downward slide and have actually, horrifyingly fallen below the $4 mark as of around 11 a.m. “Investors right now aren’t convinced that we’re done seeing dead bodies on the Citigroup balance sheet,” one equity analyst told Bloomberg News today. The Journal was way harsher, calling the slide "an illustration of what happens when the market loses all confidence in a company’s ability to do, well, anything."

But this morning on an internal company conference call, Pandit told employees that there were no bodies in the basement, and that Citigroup's capital position is actually very strong. "Rumor mongering," he said, "is at the heart of our problems." There's rumors, too, of his own demise. This morning CNBC reported they'd heard that Pandit, who replaced Chuck Prince in this thankless job only a little less than a year ago, may step down. We can't say we blame him.

Right now he can probably barely even walk to the bathroom without feeling the cold, prickly feeling of someone staring at the back of his neck. Any second he's going to bust out with a "What are you SAYING," and some innocent administrative assistant is going to get canned. Sure, he's still got that adorable little face, but we'd stay out of his way.

Bill Blass Is Pretty Much Doomed

A design by Peter Som for Bill Blass.

No good news has come out of Bill Blass since Peter Som's departure from its Couture division. Today we learn Bill Blass New York will liquidate. Bill Blass New York is a direct-sales apparel firm licensed by Bill Blass in 2006 (owned by investment firm Angelo Gordon & Co.) that made cheaper clothing than the Som-designed line. Industry sources speculate trunk-show consumers severely reined in spending after the stock market went to hell, forcing Bill Blass New York to liquidate.

But Bill Blass Couture — the line Peter Som designed until last month — isn't doing well either. NexCen owns the label and has been trying to sell it for months, but the process is taking longer than expected. WWD reports some retailers passed on the spring 2009 collection because they're nervous about what will happen with NexCen and the sale of the label. If the clothes aren't selling, will the business survive? And will we ever see Som's Blass line in stores? This is no way to head into the holidays!

Jacko P.A.: Michael, Sheik Brothers From Another Mother

Hi Cherry! How are you?
I’m swell, driving around in my little Prius hoping to find 20th Century Fox studios in time for lunch. I’ve never been before — we don’t shoot at the studio. We shoot in lovely Chatsworth, California, the porn capital of America. I think 24 is the only legit show being filmed there right now.

Do you ever rub shoulders with porn stars at the local Coffee Bean?
I think I rub shoulders with a lot of porn crews, but I have yet to see anyone that seems completely fake from the waist up.

What can you say about President Allison Taylor?
She’s not Hillary. She has nothing to do with Hillary. She’s a combination of Eleanor Roosevelt, Golda Meier, and John Wayne. The day just gets harder and harder and harder. I have to keep girding my loins to survive.

What side of the aisle does she sit on?
They’re so clever on 24. Because you never really know. I certainly have my theories, which I’m not going to share with you.

Would President Taylor see eye to eye with our president-elect?
I absolutely think she would see eye to eye with Obama. I will say that, regardless of my policies, my hair will be read as pure Republican.

You weren’t familiar with the show before you signed on, were you?
I’d never seen it. I knew that it was violent, that there was torture — big negatives for me. But I’d grown up watching the Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Mission Impossible. I loved espionage thrillers.

Once you started watching, did you ever get in a zone where you were watching the show nonstop, round the clock?
Our dogs started putting their paws over their ears when they heard the theme. They were going kind of crazy. I went through a whole period where I would synchronize it with my own clock so that I could watch it in “real time.”

Tell me all about the First Gentleman, Madam President’s husband.
She’s actually very concerned about her husband. Concerned that he is in some way under some stress-caused misconception.

So he’s a crazy paranoid?
Word that in any way that is helpful to you.

What’s the most harrowing 24 hours you’ve experienced in real life?
I was about a mile and a half north of the towers on 9/11 and in my room when the second plane hit. I’ll never forget that first wave of people walking north with that thousand-yard stare that soldiers get. We couldn’t make eye contact. We tried to offer water, cell phones, or anything. I’ll never forget those moments.

You’ve been out of the closet as a lesbian for a very long time and have a partner. Thoughts on Proposition 8?
In another four or five years, the people who voted for it will be really ashamed of themselves. I remember for the first time Bob Dole said “gay marriage” on the Senate floor. Obviously he was against it, but the fact that he said it in my lifetime, I couldn’t believe. I think we’re hurtling toward tremendous change.

Have you and your partner had a commitment ceremony?
No, we have not had a commitment ceremony. I’ve never needed to get married. Marriage, to me, is a religious ceremony between people and their individual faiths. As far as my nation and my sexuality are concerned, I just want the rights of every civil marriage in this country. I have tremendous appreciation for the leaders of this movement.

In the upcoming film adaptation of Doubt, Meryl Streep plays the role you originated (brilliantly!) on Broadway. Variety gave her a crappy review. I know you’ve seen it. Thoughts?
Any day that you’re getting compared to Meryl Streep, you’re in pretty tall cotton. The first time I saw Meryl, I was 21, she was playing Kate in Taming of the Shrew in Central Park with Raúl Juliá. After that, I was basically hers for life. It was thrilling to see her crack this role that I knew backwards and forwards. There were scenes that I thought, Huh. Wonder why she did it that way? That rascal! She's so damn good. I’m going to the premiere, I’ll finally get to hug her and tell her how magnificent she is in it.

The ‘S.S. Obama’ Springs Leaks, Takes on Drama

The big news today is that the appointment of Hillary Clinton to secretary of State is basically a done deal. Obama is ready to offer, Hillary is ready to accept, Bill's vetting apparently hasn't revealed any associations with anyone disqualifyingly shady, and the offer should be finalized just after Thanksgiving. So is the un-Obama-like drama of the past week — the leaks, the political maneuvering, the anonymous sniping — over? Actually, no — if Clinton really is to join the administration, many believe it's just beginning. But the collapse of Obama's formerly tight-lipped operation isn't all on her shoulders, either.

• Shailagh Murray and Chris Cillizza write that Obama's famously disciplined campaign "had hoped to take a methodical approach to selecting and unveiling their new team, starting with the announcements of top national security and economic players shortly after Thanksgiving." Clearly, that has not been the case. The control in which they used to take so much pride "has all but dissolved in the leak-centric world of Washington." However, despite the leaks, Obama's "choices are for the most part neither risky nor unexpected." [WP]

• Jennifer Rubin is amused that "reporters are amazed that running a campaign isn’t much like running the country." After being mesmerized by Obama, "the MSM cheering section may be stunned to learn that leaks, incompetence, poor personnel decisions, bureaucratic logjams, and conflicts with Congress are not exclusively Republican faults." Maybe instead of "kvelling about his masterful transition management," the media should ask "why we still lack the name of his Treasury Secretary pick." [Contentions/Commentary]

• David Brooks, for one, is "tremendously impressed" by the Obama transition so far, pointing to the "fact that they can already leak one big appointee per day" as evidence of "an awful lot of expert staff work." But it's who they're leaking that's truly impressive: "a nice balance of policy wonks, governors and legislators," and "the best of the Washington insiders." [NYT]

• Tim Reid and Tom Baldwin write that the Obama team is blaming the Clintons "for tarnishing the presidential transition with the type of psychological drama and leaks that marked their years in the White House." [Times UK]

• David Corn recalls how "smoothly the Obama campaign ran" before Clinton showed up. "It was a disciplined shop," with no leaks or internal disputes. But in the past week we've seen "a flood of leaks about Hillary Clinton and the State Department post. Where are they coming from? The best guess is, the Clinton side." Just imagine when there's a dispute between State and Defense or the NSA, and "the Clinton ops go into their usual take-no-prisoners-and-leak-away mode." [CQ Politics]

• Gerard Baker agrees that the danger for Obama is that this will continue for the next four years, as his foreign policy "becomes the gaudy stage on which the latest act in the engrossing saga of Clinton Agonistes is played out." [Times UK]

• Peggy Noonan says Obama has let his "smooth" transition get "disrupted by the great disrupter." To invite the Clintons into his administration is to invite "drama that will never end," which "would seem to be at odds with the atmospherics of Obamaland." Obama can look forward to "people screaming through the halls, being hired and fired, attacking the press, leaking, then too tightly controlling information, then leaking," etc. This is what in business they refer to as a "dirty deal," which is characterized by "deep complications, broad variables, proliferating unknowns." At least "it will be interesting to watch." [WSJ]

• Tim Fernholz actually finds the entire transition fairly boring. The only reason we think there's so much drama is that "standards have dropped: In the past, good insider information told who was stabbing whom in the back to become Treasury secretary. Now the press just wants to know who got the job." Notice that "we've seen no policy gaffes from Obama and no public fights over specific appointments." No-drama Obama is still in charge. [American Prospect]

Who’ll Take Hillary’s Senate Seat?

So if Hillary is all set to be secretary of State, as everyone reports today, who'll replace her in the Senate? Marc Ambinder places his bets on Andrew Cuomo over Nita Lowey; she's 71 and maybe not so interested, while "choosing Cuomo would help Gov. David Paterson dispose of a potential Democratic rival when Paterson runs for his first elected term in 2010."

Billy Corgan: Eddie Vedder Exclusively to Blame for Cubs’ Crappy Season

Onstage in Chicago this week, Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan called out Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder for, of all things, the Cubs' disappointing season. See, a few months ago Vedder wrote a song about the Cubs called "All the Way," and Corgan, a die-hard fan, thinks he jinxed them. "If the Cubs did have a chance this last year that just passed, fuckin’ Eddie Vedder killed that shit dead. Last I checked Eddie ain’t living here, okay? Eddie ain’t living here to write a song about my fuckin’ team." We guess this is what alt-rock feuds look like when everyone's in their forties. [Home Run Derby]

Ivanka Trump and Georgina Bloomberg Duel for Most-Deluded Title

Announcing her deal to write a motivational book, Ivanka Trump actually had the blinding gall to say, "My father always impressed upon me the idea that America is a meritocracy and that you must work for everything you get." Which could only be topped by Mike Bloomberg's 25-year-old daughter Georgina, who owns nine horses and a BMW, saying, "I'm not rich, my father's rich. When I go shopping, that's my own money." In less gasket-blowingly deluded news, Cuddle-Guv Paterson, Hillary (in a headband!), and Chuck Schumer ended up doing a Borscht-Belt routine involving the TelePrompTer the other night at an RFK Center gala. A 9-year-old boy on the set of 30 Rock playing a little thug who mugs Tina Fey (ha-ha-ha!) was nearly killed when a cab mowed down the shoot. Herbert Hoover great-granddaughter and Fox News regular Margaret Hoover will marry former Giuliani speechwriter and Post op-ed contributor John Avlon. Ann Coulter will officiate in the splendid setting of the Cato Institute. (Some facts fabricated.)

Madonna apparently wore the green hairy dress not only to the Gucci event, but also to drinks with her first ex-hub, Sean Penn, at the Greenwich Hotel later on. Olga and Valentin Rei, the sibling duo who last year confessed in New York Magazine to being behind the now-defunct socialiterank.com, are starting a new celebrity-astrology Website called Astrocrack. Israel foreign minister Tzipi Livni had a temper tantrum when she was seated in biz-class instead of first on an El Al flight from Tel Aviv to Newark. Emma Thompson was in town to ask the mayor to help hold an art installation here to (we think) raise attention about sex trafficking. Cindy Adams kind of admits that the late Clive Barnes understood theater better than she does, showing humility. But then says that Ashley Dupré has "stubby piggy fingers, ugly nails, and a not-pretty face," reassuring us that she hasn't changed.

Lindsay and Sam are supposedly in couples therapy because Lindsay keeps flirting with her ex and other non-Sapphic men, and because they are starting to have actual physical fights. Rita Wilson's plan to drop $75,000 on a 1962 Beatles poster as a gift for her hub, Tom Hanks, has sadly fallen through, leaving us all feeling a bit empty and rudderless today. Al Pacino wanted Glenn Close to play the Scarface girlfriend that Michelle Pfeiffer played, but apparently she wasn't slutty enough.

Damien Fahey is going straight from the canceled TRL to Extra, which we would do, too, in this economy. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are supposedly "quietly seeing" each other. And finally, in an incident of abuse that child-welfare officials musn't overlook, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz have named their new son Bronx Mowgli, after a borough and the boy hero of The Jungle Book.

With Gerard Mortier quitting as its general manager and artistic director before he even started, New York City Opera was left with lots of stillborn plans and financial repercussions. And there's much further for the company to fall. NYCO has enlisted the help of the president of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Michael Kaiser, to help reverse its fortunes. But sources close to the company are anticipating dire straits, saying NYCO's fiscal woes haven't yet bottomed out. A former high-ranking staff member says declaring bankruptcy is "a real possibility and perhaps a good option," and says the company may need to abandon its home at Lincoln Center, where Mortier-backed renovations are already under way as part of the $100 million David Koch–funded overhaul of New York State Theater. (An Opera rep disputes that: "Bankruptcy is not among the options being considered at the moment," he says.)

Talk of bankruptcy is also on the lips of the unions. The American Guild of Musical Artists' outside council has already briefed the union's staff on its options should NYCO file for Chapter 11. "All of the unions representing people at NYCO are really going to have to scramble to maintain their collective-bargaining agreements," says the union's head, Alan Gordon. And AGMA's plans won't be helping City Opera get back on its feet. The union plans to pursue arbitration over at least 84 contracts that were scrapped in the wake of Mortier's decision. They include about twenty soloist contracts, some in the $100,000 range, which were tied to now-abandoned productions schedule for 2009–10 season. "While we recognized NYCO's problems, our primary obligation is to our members to make certain that they are paid," says Gordon.

And while Mortier has severed his ties to the mess, he is scrambling to hold on to at least one of the commissions he made: Charles Wuorinen's Brokeback Mountain opera. He has contacted Wuorinen repeatedly, promising that "this will happen somewhere, somehow," according to Wuorinen. Except the contract for the production was "between Charles Wuorinen and New York City Opera, not Gerard Mortier," Wuorinen's manager, Howard Stokar says. "If you sign a contract with the Met Museum, it's with the Met, not with Philippe de Montebello." Meanwhile, other houses have expressed interest. "The only thing that's for sure is my contract with City Opera," Wuorinen says. Which, as of now, like most of City Opera's plans, is dead in the water.

Broadway’s ‘Hair’ to Be Groff-Less

Friends, we have some bad news on this chilly Friday morning. From Playbill: "Jonathan Groff, the Spring Awakening Tony nominee who had originated the role of Claude in the Public Theater's recent stagings of Hair, will not reprise that role when the production arrives at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre in February 2009." Apparently the actor is "not available." Ang Lee, is this your doing? [Playbill]

Roger Ebert Remembers Gene Siskel’s Best Snaps

The esteemed Roger Ebert has been on a reviewing and blogging tear recently, having apparently regained the fire of his early years in the wake of his multiple harrowing surgeries (though he still has the occasional lapse in judgment). This week he let loose with a grippingly introspective, almost stream-of-consciousness piece that managed to tie in his lifelong struggle with his weight, his cancer surgery, and his fondness for The Phantom of the Opera, while also working in some of Gene Siskel's greatest putdowns of him during their heyday together. We urge you to read the post itself, titled "Siskel & Ebert & the Jugular." In the meantime, though, after the jump are our five favorite Siskel disses as recounted by Ebert in the piece.

5. "Phone for you, Rog. Your shoes are calling."

4. "Buzz, the usual offer of 10 silver dollars to any cameraman who doesn't make Mr. Ebert look like a mudslide."

3. Referring to Ebert’s only published novel, Behind the Phantom's Mask: "The first book in history that placed below Amazon's Sales Ranking."

2. "Here's an item that will interest you, Roger. It says here, the Michelin Man has been arrested in a fast food court in Hawaii for attempting to impersonate the Pillsbury Dough Boy."

And our favorite…

1. "Nancy, please bring Mr. Ebert a bookmark so he doesn't lose his chin again."

Wronged Librarian Scores $25,000 After E-mail Mix-Up

William Hallowell, the Staten Island librarian's assistant who was arrested last year when his older female boss called the police on him, claiming he sent her a filthy (yet hilarious) e-mail which employed the phrase, "I could spank you with a vintage [copy] of Finigan's [sic] Wake." It was obviously a mix-up — it wasn't even his e-mail address on the printout — but the fuzz hauled him in and questioned him anyway. So Hallowell sued them for harassment, and now he's won $25K from the city. We applaud the justice and all, but considering how tight the budget is, we think it would have been better for the city to sentence the cops to several lashings with Ulysses. [NYDN]

It Looks Like Katie Holmes Shot the Miu Miu Campaign Yesterday

Spotted: Katie Holmes with slicked back hair and suspiciously smoky eye makeup arriving at her New York apartment yesterday. According to commenters on the Fashion Spot, this decidedly non-mom styling is residue of the Miu Miu spring 2009 campaign shoot, which occurred yesterday. Eight unidentified models reportedly appear alongside Holmes in the ads. But who knows if they'll even be visible? It could just be Holmes flanked by sixteen noodle-y arms and legs. Such a possibility has commenters on the Fashion Spot in a huff. One calls the Holmes casting a "damn shame," while another writes, "Katie Holmes will never be classy let alone be suitable for such a great Miu Miu collection," and a third says, "My immediate response to Katie Holmes for Miu Miu is HORROR." From what we can see of her hair and makeup in this paparazzi picture, she doesn't look so bad. The Rihanna do is rather becoming on her. Maybe the ads will work after all?

Angelina Jolie Really IS Manipulative and Conniving, Says the ‘Times’

Jennifer Aniston must feel so vindicated today. The Times, which only recently published a lengthy, loving story about how Angelina Jolie, humanitarian and actress, manages to rise above her tabloid image, threw itself into an investigation of how the man-stealing actress controls her publicity, and in a Page One story concluded that she is basically a self-obsessed manipulative freak. And it. is. awesome. We learn that:

• "The actress does not employ a publicist or an agent. The keys to her public image belong to her alone." Sinister.
People is totally a slave to her: When she sold the photos of her and Brad Pitt with their daughter, Shiloh, to the magazine, she dictated the terms of not only the story that went with it but insisted on an "editorial plan" for further coverage of her, including a stipulation that they not ever use the term "Brangelina," which she hates. We hate it too, but this just makes us want to say it all the time. Brangelina. Brangelina. Brangelina. Okay, we'll stop now. People denies this, but who are they kidding?

Us is a slave to her, too: After her divorce from Billy Bob Thornton, "Us magazine asked Ms. Jolie if she would agree to an interview and be photographed. According to two people involved, she declined — but then offered the magazine another photo opportunity. Ms. Jolie informed it what time and place she would be publicly playing with Maddox, essentially creating a paparazzi shot. The resulting photo, the origin of which was not made public to Us readers, presented Ms. Jolie in a new light — a young mother unsuccessfully trying to have a private moment with her son."
• Even Namibia does her bidding: "In 2006, when she sought the privacy of Namibia to give birth to Shiloh, the government refused to grant visas to journalists unless they had written permission from the couple."
• The bombshell: Despite the fact that Brangelina (heh) has claimed to donate the $4.1 million they got from the People shoot to charity, the Jolie-Pitt foundation, according to federal filings, has only given grants of about $2 million since its creation in 2006. Her lawyer tells the Times that donations often run more than a year behind. But what about the children? Can they wait that long?
• The last line twists the knife: "Today, about 24 percent of respondents [to marketing surveys] view Ms. Jolie positively."

This is so fantastic. We'd now like to request that the Times launch an investigation into why Kim Kardashian continues to be famous.

‘Arrested Development’ Movie Inches Toward Actual Existence

They've Made a Huge Mistake: Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard have closed deals to finally resurrect Arrested Development from the TV trash heap. Series creator Hurwitz is onboard to write and direct the film, with a little help from Howard, who would also presumably narrate. Original soundtrack to be recorded by Dr. Fünke's 100% Natural Good-Time Family-Band Solution. [HR]

The Book of Mila: Mila Kunis has joined Denzel Washington in his quest to save The Book of Eli. The Warner Bros. action-thriller centers on the loner Eli (Washington) who must fight across a wasteland of America to protect a sacred book that holds the key to saving humanity. Kunis will play a woman who starts as an enemy of Eli's but ultimately joins his cause. Because with a face like Denzel's, how could anyone be his enemy? [HR]

Bourne Again: Universal Pictures has struck a deal with the estate of Bourne author Robert Ludlum that gives the studio exclusive rights to Jason Bourne and a first look at all other Ludlum novels. The deal paves the way for more Bourne pics, which were originally imagined as a trilogy but are now being positioned as Universal's answer to Bond films. Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are currently onboard to star in and direct the fourth Bourne, out in 2008. So who takes over Bourne when Damon gets too old? Maybe Haley Joel Osment? He's got nothing else to do. [Variety]

It's a Deal: Warner Brothers has signed a three-year first look deal with Get Smart director Peter Segal and his partner, Michael Ewing. The duo will start with Liam McBain: International Tennis Star and Proper English Geezer, a comedy that follows the rise, fall, and eventual redemption of a fictional eighties British tennis star. [Variety]

What's the Matter With Kansas?: Timothy Olyphant is set to star in The Crazies, a Breck Eisner remake of George Romero's 1973 horror flick. Olyphant will play the sheriff of a small Kansas town where a plane crash lets loose a biological weapon, driving the townsfolk to go insane, die, and elect Sam Brownback to the United States Senate. [HR]

Hoppy Returns: 300 producer Mark Canton has teamed up with Pterodactyl Productions on a pair of moves that revive classic cowboy Bill "Hopalong" Cassidy. The projects will feature a modern revival of the cowboy who William Boyd played in 66 films throughout the thirties, forties, and fifties. "We're looking to ring in the modern age with a branded, well-loved hero that we approach in a fresh way," Canton said. Plus, if there's one sure thing at the box office these days, it's a western. Madonna’s Hairy Green Dress Is Actually Louis Vuitton

Madonna and Guy Ritchie settled their divorce. But who cares when she wore that green dress to the Gucci UNICEF party last night? At first, when we saw it, we thought maybe she had dipped herself in 24-karat-real-gold paint and then rolled around in a bunch of shredded money because she's Madonna and she can. But what looks like a dead Fraggle in this picture is actually a fabulous piece of Louis Vuitton from the spring 2009 collection. This all but confirms Madonna is the face of the house's spring 2009 campaign. Wearing Louis to a Gucci event? If we raised our eyebrows even higher, our hairline would eat them. We do hope Madge is styled better in the ads. The dress is fabulous, just not on her, here. We must say, though, her hair and makeup look gorgeous. Who says divorce is bad for the skin?

‘Dow Doobie Doo Down Down.’

The Dow dropped 445 points today, to 7552.29. Shares in Citibank lost 26 percent, despite a hot cash injection from Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. Oil dropped to $50 a barrel. And JPMorgan Chase dropped 19 percent. But these dry facts don't really tell you what the day was like for market-watchers. For that, we must turn to the message board on New York parenting Website YouBeMom. Selections of the conversations that took place there today appear below, and we recommend losing yourself in the rhythm of it, as one might with an epic poem or song. We'll title it:

The Ballad of The New York House Wife

the dow is down 17 percent from 10 years ago. i started working 10 years ago. i might as well ahve spent and enjoyed the money i saved
In 40 years when you are retiring, I doubt you will say that.
I know, but it doesn't feel good now! I was being facetious. Kind of. ;)
Yeah... I am feeling a little better about the fact that I didn't really save.
45% down.....in one year. insane
the year isn't over yet
That's what scares me.
lol
The dow?
Yes

dad is such a gambler, never should have kept such a
large exposure to stocks.
Same with my mother. She's lost half her retirement, and she's 66.
The Dow is going to 0. That's my new prediction.
can it go negative?
They'll find a way.

Here is to all naysayers who told me I was stupid to pull out of the market 2 months ago look at the dow again today ladies -and it is all going to get worse! ooooh you must be doing a happy dance

what happens when the dow goes to zero?
earth explodes
Tom will come out to the world
Tom?
Kati Halmez's dad
you mean shuri?
shit!! yes!!! is it time for my 3rd glass of wine?
The Jewish Messiah shows up
eat the family dog

I cannot believe how low the dow closed.... (8 replies) how low? 7500 how low was yesterday? 8000 how low? deep breathes

WHAT is the MARKET doing?
holy FUCK
OH MY GOD

Oh please, stop with the alarmist all CAPS!
It ''ll go up tomorrow. Professionals will start buying.
My bloomberg just blew up
dow doobie doo down down
lol, way way down

I am really down today.
aww, how come?
fighting with dh, want to lose weight, permamently tired, work is overwhelming me, a lot of stuff.
I need to lose weight too. I've gained 10 pounds since June, want to crawl out of my skin (and I was overweight to begin with)
I have been dieting for 18 mos and weigh the same as when I started. Isuck.
Do you really want to feel better? I can assure you will if you do thi detox plan. I did last year and changed my life and marriage.
sure, what is it? not the master cleanse?
do tell
same thing here. I went to the dr yesterday for a physical, he is checking my thyroid. he said if the thyroid is ok, he will give me Meridia.
my issue isn't that, it's that I don't stick to it and don't exercise enough, though I just rejoined my gym
above poster-- well the way it is supposed to work is that you will stick to a diet because you won't have crazy crabvings and you will be encouraged by the weight loss you see
whats that?
a stuimulant! at least I will have more energy!
and sleep problems?????
least of my worries

I posted it months ago and i"ll say it again - my prediction for the Dow bottom is 6700 6200
The Dow is going to open way down! going to take another beating
ugh, makes me sick to even think about
Do you think we are in recession and will recover in less than 24mths or a Depression and recovery will be 5yrs or so?
I pick option 1
i think 24 months is a lofty aspiration for recovery
same
anaylsts at my dh company are saying 2-3 years
how did those analysts do at predicting our current market situation?
actually we have a friend at goldman who predicted this . He was dead on. But noone listened.
I predicted this as well. I am not even in finance.

This is why the Dow is going down - another big bank (Citi) is in huge trouble, auto industry is going kaput fast, this alone will cause at least a 3% increase in unemployment I predicted Citi would break up before the end of the year
Very afraid.
But someone earlier said that it was because the traders' confidence is down because they don't get enough BJ's. Now I don't know WHAT to believe!

I really think it's going to 6,500. Mark my words. This is bad.
plenty of people thought it wouldn't go below 9000
Plenty of people thought we'd skip a recession!
and that real estate could only go up
Remember all the endless threads a year ago about how Manhattan real estate would never, ever go down and wasn't inflated at all?
I do

DH came home tonight and said lawfirm profitfell by 50%
o wow! which firm?
hate to name - fan the flames and all - but he came home really depressed
was it a biglaw firm?
yes

It's been lower than that, hasn't it?

omfg no way... not that low... What is the Dow now? closed under 8K For the first time since 2003. Back to the future! shit stop it Just give it another month or two. I SAID STOP IT. this kind of post has real effects on people

Hot Male Models Play in the Pool, Fight With Stuffed Animals

You need an end-of-day blog-me-up. Tomorrow's weather forecast includes snow, another media outlet folded, Project Runway is doomed, and the economy is just lying there like a cold wet noodle in the bottom of the kitchen sink. But the sun is shining in Brazil! Jeremy Kost photographed scantily clad male models soaking up those luscious rays of New York's yore in a fashion spread for Junior magazine, the Brazilian version of Out. The issue comes out mid-December, but it's not sold in this country, so Jeremy sent us some outtakes from the shoot, which you can see in the slideshow, pool fighting on alligator floaties included. Jeremy also sent us some outtakes of models from a shoot for the issue of Anthem magazine coming out the first week of December. He calls that one "a take on childhood innocence with a dark turn … As the clothes come off, the guys become more aggressive with the masculine stuffed objects, eventually tearing the stuffing out!" Click ahead for the carnage!

Robert Duffy Explains the Business of Fashion in Concrete Terms

Jacobs and Duffy.

Marc Jacobs's business partner, Robert Duffy, sounds so exasperated in interviews sometimes. He knows practically everything about growing a successful fashion house but realizes the rest of the world doesn't quite understand the basics because designers tend not to explain things in the most concrete terms. He acts tired (indeed, he's said that aside from the sprawling Marc Jacobs empire, Marc himself is a handful who gets spinach on his audits), but underneath it all you can tell he loves it to death. Duffy explained the business end of Marc Jacobs International in non-flowery English to the JC Report.

Working under the LVMH umbrella is no cake walk.

Most of designers could not work well together with Bernard Arnault. Until we gain money, problems don't appear. We control our company. Last year we had an increase of 30% sales, which happened because of large diversification of the brand. When one of the lines starts losing the interest of the consumers the others can "give a shoulder."

He sheds light on what the hell Victoria Beckham's paper bag ads were about.

In my opinion, an advertisement should not "sell" the product, it should inform the target audience of the brand and explain the main particularities of the product against the other ones … It's a mix of Marc's imagination and the people who take part in these campaigns.

Advertising is not universal.

Retail needs in different countries vary. If our partners wish to have more advertisements for the accessories, we can do a special photo shoot. But if, for instance, it concerns some religious attitudes, we won't cover a semi-nude model.

You know the girl Kate on Stylista? The one with really big boobs who likes to wear push-up tops? Marc Jacobs isn't meant for her.

We don't create straightly sexy things. And if it is even sexy, it still appears in different way. Marc Jacobs' clothes have a complicated concept, but if a person feels it, then it's easy to understand this essence... If he wants to reach an effect of nakedness, he will never disrobe the body. It doesn't meet the essence of the brand's concept or his vision of fashion. Self-ironical people choose the clothes, motivated by other principles.

Duffy's diction is revelatory.

Marc is responsible for the women's collection, and I am subjected to the men's.

Marc's design process makes no sense to him.

It is always a surprise for me. He can change his way in minutes. Last season he was inspired by the cocoon, next season it will possibly be picture frames.

One must not launch new products, like bathing suits, just because everyone else is.

We are motivated by the principal that launching a project is sensible when we are already prepared for it, but not when it is a demand of the market. It won't matter if we are the first or we are the last. The first ones are frequently mistaken. It's good to be the best, but not the first.

Pipilotti Rist Turns MoMA Into a Gigantic Vagina Eye

Walking in from the bitter cold, the throngs that came to Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist's opening at MoMA last night were greeted by a luxuriant blast of summer. The entire second-floor atrium was bathed in a seamless video installation of people cavorting in a verdant flower patch, doing graphic, sensual things with dirt, tulips, worms, and fruit. In the center of the room, Barnett Newman's Broken Obelisk had long stood, a circular cushioned seating area ringed by white carpeting was patrolled by guards who made guests remove their shoes before entering; blissed-out art lovers lay there, letting the video — emitted by bulbous projectors protruding from the wall — wash over them, while a baby in a pink knit cap crawled around in the black center. The overall effect was of being in the middle of a peach or, as not a few noted, a gigantic vagina.

"The thing about Pipilotti is that justice is not served unless you see it dominate you," said artist Aaron Young, who was mingling with the crowd. "The environment that she creates completely dominates you and you feel like you're seduced." "It's exactly what I needed today after toxic stock markets and attorney generals and Iraq-war stuff," said Rufus Wainwright, who was mingling with the crowd. "It reminds me of a more positive, sixties and seventies psychedelic kind of lifestyle, which we need more of." Klaus Biesenbach, the show's curator, and MoMA director Glenn Lowry — decked out in an orange scarf — played host as art-world figures like Jon Kessler and Roberta Smith (naturally with her husband, New York's Jerry Saltz) took in the show. Meanwhile, Rist, a sprightly, childlike woman in rectangular glasses, was being mobbed by fans at the base of the stairs. When a reporter offered to lead her outside for a smoke, she bent into a low crouch and grabbed the back of his jeans in order to be led through the crowd undetected, like a submarine.

"It's actually an eye," Rist, safely outside, said of the show's circular seating area. "The white is the eye white and then there's the iris and the black is the pupil. The projectors are a prolonging of our eyes, it's a collective view." Known for short-form videos featuring herself, sometimes nude, she recently completed her first feature-length film. "It's about unnecessary fear, a girl who gets lost from her grandmother to free the world and herself from unnecessary fear, and sometimes she succeeds and sometimes not, and then she's looking for friends," she explained, somewhat helpfully. "There are particular fears like hypochondria and gender negotiations, negations, and then they find the right color and with this color they free the world from unnecessary fears." Soon enough, a clutch of people including the painters Marilyn Minter and Brice Marden spotted Rist and surrounded her as she smoked, praising the show and receiving passes to the after-party at Pravda. "They love me because of the work and I'm not identical with the work," Rist reflected. "They don't love me, they love the work. That's much better."

Condé Nast Shuts Down ‘DNR’

We just got word that Condé Nast just shut down DNR, WWD's brother menswear publication. The November 24 issue will be its last and WWD will absorb DNR's coverage online and in print. Patrick McCarthy, editorial director of W, WWD, and Footwear News, announced the closure today. “With the men’s and women’s apparel businesses sharing many of the same issues, we believe that integrating men’s coverage through WWD’s daily print and digital resources is the best way to serve our global audience,” McCarthy said in a statement. According to a press release:

In addition to daily men’s coverage in print and online, WWD will publish in-depth WWDMen’s reports every Thursday beginning in January, special sections during key fashion events, and WWDMen’s Collections magazines twice each year. WWD.com will add a dedicated WWDMen’s channel in December.

No word yet on what kind of layoffs will occur.
