Leaked: The Killers Ditch New Jersey for Space

The Killers, Day & Age

Official Release Date: November 24

The Verdict: Following widespread disappointment over 2006's Springsteenian Sam's Town (we liked it), the Killers have cleverly decided to follow it up with what sounds like, on a first listen, the finest album of their four-year-old career. Duran Duran keyboards, Joy Division bass lines, and David Bowie saxophone solos, plus a bunch of huge sing-along choruses that capably compensate for Brandon Flowers lyrics, all add up to a gloriously stinker-free collection that should yield at least as many singles as Hot Fuss. "Spaceman," "Neon Tiger," and "Joy Ride" alone should be enough to knock Chinese Democracy off your iTunes for a couple of hours this week.

Democrat Mark Begich Beats Ted Stevens for Alaska Senate Seat

Bringing the Democratic majority in the Senate up to 58, Mark Begich was declared the winner of the Alaska Senate race over 40-year incumbent (and recently convicted felon for corruption) Ted Stevens. The final vote difference was 3,724. Still outstanding are the Senate races in Minnesota, where they are awaiting a recount, and Georgia, where there will be a runoff in December. [Politico]

Video: Carla Bruni’s U.S. Press Blitz

French First Lady Carla Bruni is in the midst of a U.S. press tour to promote her new album, Comme si de rien n’était (As If Nothing Happened). You're probably thinking just what Matt Lauer was thinking when she went on the Today show this morning: Isn't it weird for a First Lady to go on a press tour to promote (gasp) an album? Unexpected, yes. Weird, no. "At the beginning I got worried that people might take it wrong because they’re not used to it," Carla said, explaining that when she met her husband a year ago, the album was already written and she didn't want to cancel her plans to record it. "For a women these days, I think it’s important to have a job and to keep it. Not that I’m such a feminist, but you know." We know: You are such a feminist, Bruni-Sarkozy. It doesn't have to be a dirty word. Last night Carla went on Letterman and talked about her first date with Sarkozy and meeting the Queen of England and the Pope. Click through to watch.

Andrew Cuomo’s Unhappy Birthday

Poor Andrew Cuomo. He turns 51 on December 6, and he's planned a massive bash to celebrate the passing of the half-century mark at Bridgewaters in the South Street Seaport. He even sent out little invitations with the scales of justice on them (because that is like his "signature" — last year he had them rendered in marzipan on a cake). It should be a blast! But will anyone go? The only people who can afford the price of a ticket — they start at $1,000 and go up to $50,000, because Cuomo's also raising money for his next AG race, or a possibly a gubernatorial campaign — are Wall Street people, and even they can't afford it these days. Especially because dude has been hammering them about bonuses. In fact, in some cases the invitations asking for money arrived in tandem with the letters he's been sending out demanding executives to forgo them. Awkward.

ANDREW CUOMO WANTS $50,000 FOR HIS BIRTHDAY [NY Real Estate]

She is capable of guilt: "I try not to revisit that place too often, but when I think about [Spitzer's first apologetic press conference] I think of [Silda's] face, her eyes, the hurt … I'm sorry for your pain."

But not, like, an unhealthy amount of guilt: She told the magazine that if it hadn't been her in that Mayflower Hotel room, it would have been someone else.

She's a pro: "This wasn't any different than going on a date with someone you barely knew and hooking up with them," she said. "I knew what my purpose was, they knew what their purpose was — there weren't any games."

(And so is Spitzer, apparently): "Some guys, they want to have conversations and really get to know each other. With him, it clearly was not like that. It was more of a transaction. Strictly business."

She is a big reader: Since her crazy public exposure, she's mostly just been working out and reading.

Not so much of a TV watcher: She didn't know who Spitzer was when she met him as "Client No. 9." "I mean, ask a lot of 22 year olds," she said. "I was wrapped up in my family, my music. I knew the name, but the face … I'm not really a TV person."

Being laid bare isn't something she always enjoys: On watching Spitzer's televised confession, she said: "It was surreal. I felt like I was suffocating."

She has unique parental influences: She said her father, who took off when she was 3, called her after she hit the headlines to say, "Damn, girl. When you do it, you do it big!"

She's lucky: She said most of her clients were "intelligent, handsome and successful."

Or, wait, did she mean something else by "layers"?

Confusing: ‘Office’ Actress Joins NBC’s ‘Office’ Non-Spinoff

Don't Call Her Karen: Rashida Jones has joined the cast of the mysterious NBC sitcom starring Amy Poehler and Aziz Ansari that is not, repeat, is not, an Office spinoff. Given NBC's insistence that this new show isn't an Office spinoff, it makes perfect sense to cast a former actress from The Office. [Variety]

Mutant Drama: X-Men will finally get the melodramatic treatment it's long been calling for when Josh Schwartz writes X-Men: First Class, which will focus on a much younger group of superpowered mutants. The man behind Gossip Girl and The O.C. is expected to "inject a next-gen sensibility" to the franchise. Can't wait to see Wolverine's Twitter. [HR]

Writing America: Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, of Chronicles of Narnia fame, have been nabbed by Marvel to write its upcoming superhero flick Captain America. Paramount is expected to release the film in 2011 with a lot more talking lions than the original comic books. [Variety]

Kung Fu Prince: It's not dead after all! John Stevenson, director of Kung Fu Panda, has been tapped to bring He-Man to life. The Joel Silver–produced flick will have He-Man fighting both his arch nemesis, Skeletor, and technology, all within a 300-style world. As long as the original live-action He-Man, Dolph Lundgren, gets a cameo, we're in. [Latino Review]

Heaton in The Middle: ABC has given the green light to The Middle, a sitcom starring Patricia Heaton. The show will tell the story of a middle-class, midwestern family through the eyes of the mother. The pilot was originally set for 2006–2007 with Ricki Lake starring, but the network preferred Heaton. It's basically the story of Ricki Lake's life. [HR]

Yay, Love: Warner Bros. has struck a deal for the film rights to Nicholas Sparks's latest best seller, The Lucky One. Producer Denise Di Novi will tackle the adaptation, the fourth time she's worked with a Sparks novel. Published only last month, the book tells the story of a Marine who survives three tours in Iraq. While deployed, he carries around a picture of a woman he's never met, and when he returns to the States, sets out to find his good-luck charm in the flesh. Sounds like Hollywood has finally learned its lesson when it comes to Iraq-war movies: if you don't want it to flop, make it a sappy love story. [Variety]

Wisely or not, rappers have never been shy about flexing their pipes. And while there are those who know what they’re doing — think Bone Thugs n’ Harmony, or André 3000 — many more, well, do not. With the release of Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreaks, an album entirely and inauspiciously devoted to the MC’s singing voice, rapidly approaching, we’ve taken a look back at ten memorably off-key performances that demonstrate just how we arrived at this moment. Cover your ears!

Clothes for Recession-Proof Kids: Fur Slippers, Coats, Boots, and More

With news that Jean Paul Gaultier is launching a line of kidswear, tykes have morphed into mini-trendsetters. From Shiloh's skull-patterned moccasins to Malia's Election Night dress, highly styled kids can cause stores to sell out of "It" items as quickly as their famous parents. And retailers have taken notice: Macy's just announced that they'll be stocking Tommy Hilfiger's relaunched children's line next season, and Ralph Lauren converted his Bleecker Street women's store into a children's boutique last month. But tot apparel is no longer confined to the oversize T-shirts and scuffed-up sneakers of your youth. It's all about pizzazz, especially with the holidays coming up. Economy be damned! William Kristol: ‘I’m Kinda Stretched a Little Thin’

New York Times opinion columnist William Kristol is not unaware that the Internet is speculating about his future at the paper. But he says he's had "zero issues" with the editorial staff of the Gray Lady. "Despite all the dramatics in the blogosphere it's been a very undramatic experience for me," he said at an Independent Film Channel panel this morning, according to the Observer. "You gotta talk to [the Times] about that. It's been a lot of work and I'm kinda stretched a little thin. I'll see."

Kristol was asked about Elisabeth Bumiller's story (in his own paper) on the McCain campaign, in which she seemed to out one of his own sources. "It was a little weird," he said, assuring listeners that reporters don't coordinate with the editorial board, and that he cooperated with her as he would any journalist. Thankfully, the election aftermath has held one nice treat for Kristol: He got to see Sarah Palin again. "I met her for the second time in my life," he said, attacking the notion that he was somehow her best friend and shill during the campaign. "I barely know her!" Oh, Bill. It's the admirers from afar who are the most crazy — everybody knows that.

Meet the Hopefuls at Bravo’s ‘Fashion House’ Casting Call

Elier Aubret, contestant.

More than 200 fashion designers schlepped with their dresses and look books to the Park on Tenth Avenue on Sunday to try out for Bravo's forthcoming fashion-designer reality competition show Fashion House. Rather than work individually as on Project Runway, which Bravo recently lost to either Lifetime or NBC (depending on how the giant sticky mess of lawsuits pans out), contestants on Fashion House will work in teams to create a whole line. Intrigued and craving a fight as per our usual Sunday routine (kidding!), we infiltrated the hopefuls with a camera and a facial expression detached from our inner judgments. See a few of the hopefuls and their work in the slideshow. We couldn't judge them to their face, but you, readers, can judge them to the blog. Let us know in the comments if any stand out to you.

Is Andrew Cuomo One of Those People That Uses ‘Literally’ the Wrong Way?

Anyone would agree that Andrew Cuomo's ass is on fire about bonuses right now. But is it literally on fire? Are his knickers literally in a twist about executives rewarding themselves as the American economy literally goes up in flames? He might say so. Today the New York attorney general wrote AIG CEO Edward M. Liddy a letter asking him if he thought he was going to give out bonuses this year after the government provided about $150 billion in loans to rescue the insurer from collapse. “It seems hard to believe that A.I.G. could pay significant bonuses or give raises to its executives after the company has quite literally been bailed out by the American taxpayer.” God, tell us about it. We just did our shift over on the bucket line at the AIG building, and boy, are our arms tired. [Office of the Attorney General via DealBook/NYT]

Handbag Designer Rachel Nasvik Thinks You Should Own a Bodysuit

Rachel Nasvik in her garment-district factory.

Brooklyn handbag designer Rachel Nasvik is a child of the disco-loving, free-spirited seventies, a decade she pays tribute to with every bag she designs. The Chicago native and FIT grad launched her eponymous line in 2004, and the simplified designs are equally at home in Woodstock or on Bedford Avenue. And she launched a series of private fashion parties simply to lighten the dark mood of the poor economy. We caught up with Nasvik to talk about neon tube tops, skinny jeans, and more.

You say your look is modern vintage. What do you mean by that?
I like the sturdiness of it and the comfort of that time period. I think I really just like the richness of the seventies. The skinny cuts and the clean lines. I'm obsessed with outerwear and menswear, and I like to pull details from clothing back then and translate it into a detail on a bag that is somewhat unexpected.

Can you describe the woman who wears your bags?
She'd probably look like me. That probably sounds egomaniacal, but I've seen girls wearing my bags around the city, and they dress more or less like me. My bag is my life, and they do that, too. I think she is someone that has a definite sense of who she is. She wears familiar pieces in an unfamiliar way and is stylish without being trendy.

Bags from her recent collection.Photo: Courtesy of Rachel Nasvik

Why did you decide to throw private fashion parties?
Just to lighten up the mood and just have fun because of the way things are right now and people are watching what they spend, it seems like a good thing for the winter. We're planning to do three or four this winter and hook up with other people and throw parties with them. We're going through our mailing list to invite people.

What's the first designer item you ever bought?
I bought a neon DKNY tube top when I was 16 that I loved.

What trends do you like for fall?
Suede bootees.

Are there any trends you wish would go away?
Overdesigned bags — really embellished handbags with tons of hardware and rivets everywhere. It's just too much.

Are there any trends you wish would come back?
I like the bodysuit — I guess it's come back a little bit. It could look really hot with a pair of tights when going out at night.

Who are your favorite designers?
Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Daryl K, and Marc Jacobs.

What’s something that every woman should have in her closet? A good pair of skinny jeans. I don't think they should go out of style. I just realized they really do look good on everybody, more so than flares which don't look good on that many people.

What's something you can't leave the house without?
My iPod. I always listen to music. I can't be in the city without having my earphones. The Kills, the Raveonettes, the Strokes, Hot Chip, and Passion Pit.

Obama’s Attorney General Tap: First African-American to Run Justice Department?

Washington lawyer Eric Holder will be picked as Barack Obama's attorney general, Newsweek reports. Holder was a deputy attorney general during the Clinton administration and is a partner at the elite firm Covington & Burling. He also headed up Obama's vice-presidential selection team with Caroline Kennedy, but the best part is, he's a New Yorker, born and raised! He went to Columbia for his undergraduate and law degrees. Oh, and he's black, which would make him Obama's first second African-American appointee and the first ever black attorney general of the United States. According to Newsweek, Holder was hesitant about the position because he worried that his confirmation hearing would revive controversy over his role in the Clinton pardoning of financier Marc Rich. That Bill Clinton, always causing problems for the Obama administration! But according to the magazine, Obama has offered Holder the position and he's accepted it.

FYI, that picture is from 2001, but he totally still has the 'stache. Rock on!

Spike Jonze Promises That ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ Won’t Be the New ‘Chinese Democracy’

Presumably compelled by this morning's leak of Chinese Democracy, Spike Jonze has granted a gargantuan interview to Ain't It Cool News in which he assures us that his oft-delayed opus, Where the Wild Things Are, is also still on track to actually come out someday. Apparently editing on the movie was completed three weeks ago, and all special effects should be finished by May, probably just in time for lots more problems to pop up before the movie's planned October 16 release. Karen O is still writing the film's score, and Billy Bob Thornton, Jonze says, will provide the voice for one of the Wild Things. Also, on the rumored pants-crappings at test screenings: "From the beginning, I told the studio, 'I don't think this is gonna be a movie for four-year-olds,'" says Spike. "And I think they said 'Oh, okay,' but I think that when they saw it, that's another … you know, that's something else … It's sort of like they were expecting a boy and I gave birth to a girl. So they just needed their time to sort that out and figure out how they were going to learn to love their new daughter." This movie will never be released.

I.M. Pei’s Silver Towers Indeed Landmarked

It took five years of nudging, but preservationists finally got their wish today when the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to landmark Silver Towers, three IM Pei–designed, sixties-era residential buildings near NYU, and the massive Picasso sculpture that fronts them. The ruling likely puts the kibosh on the university's plans to build a 40-foot tower in the green space adjacent to Silver Towers, says Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, which has been lobbying for designation for years. In an interview this morning, Berman said the ruling wouldn't "provide absolute protection of the green space, but it makes it pretty clear [it's] integral and should not be messed with." He added that the Morton Williams site nearby was not included, however, which means it could still be vulnerable for development, and GVSHP will be "watching closely." NYU, consider yourself warned.

‘Borat’ Composer Erran Baron Cohen on His New Hanukkah Album, His Brother Sacha, and the Music of ‘Bruno’

The musical force behind Da Ali G Show, Borat, and the upcoming Bruno, Erran Baron Cohen (he's Sacha's brother) also somehow managed to find time to remake a whole collection of holiday classics just in time for the Festival of Light. Songs in the Key of Hanukkah, out today, features collaborations from world-renowned Jewish artists, including Brooklyn's own Y-Love. Cohen spoke with Vulture recently about Yiddish rapping, the gayest CD in his collection, and what childhood games might have inspired Borat's naked wrestling scene.

So, why a Hanukkah CD?
Well, the idea is sort of one of the more unusual projects I have been involved with. To take Hanukkah, which is a great festival that I always enjoyed as a kid singing all the songs. I remember we had this terrible record our parents played with children singing slightly off tune to a really old piano player. As the years went on, I realized they were all really bad tunes and all badly played. So the idea was to use story of Hanukkah and take some of the music of it and update it to make it really cool.

Who are some of these musicians on the record?
They're not so well known in the U.S., but they were some of the interesting singers I was aware of here. Yasmin Levy is an incredible diva from the world-music scene. It was an amazing experience just to hear her sing. Idan Raichel is one of the big pop stars in Israel, sort of one of the more interesting people working there.

What's the CD's appeal for a recovering Catholic like myself?
I think it is aimed at Catholics actually. No, I think the hook is that it’s good music. It's taking something that’s old and bringing it into the 21st century.

Do your kids have a favorite song?
"Oh Dreidel"; they love to dance around. And they love the rap track with Y-Love. He's a New York–based Jewish rapper that converted to Judaism and raps in Yiddish.

Can you rap in Yiddish?
I don't even think I could rap in English. But Y-Love can do it, and it sounds great. When we recorded that, we were in Berlin, so he's this black, Jewish rapper in Berlin, and it was quite surreal but really powerful.

What was it like scoring for Da Ali G Show?
What was great about it was I got to remix some tracks. Like by Supergrass and Chrissy Hynde who were guests on the show; they didn't quite know it was going to happen. They started to sing their songs and I was in the studio, and I remixed almost live and brought in ridiculous bass sounds. Eventually it turned into a completely different kind of extreme drum-and-bass hip-hop tune.

Do you and Sacha share a love of catching people off guard like that?
I think I certainly like pushing things to see how far you can take something, and Sacha has that as well. Certainly, we have a sense of humor. Well, he doesn’t have much of one. I am the funny one in the family.

How do you score something like a naked wrestling scene?
Well, the naked wrestling scene has no music. We decided that was such an extreme scene, sort of "the scene" of the film — certainly the most disgusting scene — that music would have detracted from the reality of the whole thing.

Was that scene based on any of your real-life experiences?
Do you mean did Sacha and I do any nude wrestling around the house? That’s interesting, I can't remember being nude when wrestling with Sacha. I may have been wearing underpants at certain times, but they remained firmly on during our wrestling moments.

Can you tell me about the Bruno score? How different is it from the score for Borat?
It's a lot gayer. That’s the key thing, I think. There's a lot of gay influence in the music. I am investigating a lot of gay things at the moment. I just bought the CD called Gayfest 2008, and that's my main influence.

What is on that CD?
It's got a guy with a sort of muscle-y bare-chested look on the front. It's got Jackie 'O,' "Before He Cheats." It's contemporary gay club, dance pop.

Penn Badgley Made a Kissing Face at Us

When Ed Westwick appeared in ads for K-Swiss shoes making ridiculous kissy faces, we had to wonder if his castmates gave him any shit for it. So when we saw Penn Badgley last night at Skylight Studios for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards, we asked what he thought about Ed pouting it out for sneakers.

"You mean like [puckers] that?"

Yes, that's exactly what we mean, we told him, while staring longingly at his lips.

"Yes, I suppose he's known to do that."

Would he ever do a similar promotion?

"Yes. The only thing I wouldn't do is a car."

Why not?

"I could go on a whole philosophical rant, but I just don't agree with cars," he said. OMG that is so Dan of him! we squealed inside our head, but asked out loud how it was that he didn't "agree" with a car.

"No, no, no. That sounds ridiculous. I just wouldn't want to encourage anything that isn't a hybrid, and at the same time, I wouldn't want to encourage the production of more cars. It's just, you know, being ecologically conscious." So. Dan. We were swooning. Then, suddenly, one of Anna Wintour's Vogue magazine minions swept over.

"Anna needs to see you now," she said urgently.

"I'll be there as soon as I can," Dan/Penn told her. He picked us over a Voguette! We died inside, then picked up the conversation.

Sounds like we have a green professor on our hands, we quipped.

"Well, obviously I care about the climate, it's not so much…"

And just as he was really getting into it — ready to break out statistics and numbers which would culminate, we knew, in eventually Frenching us — the Vogue girl came back and stole him. "Anna needs to see you right now," she ordered him. His eyes grew large, as if he feared the Anna wrath more than he feared ozone depletion and melting polar ice caps.

"Apparently I have to go," he said apologetically. As he sauntered away, we puckered up like Ed Westwick, hoping he'd return the gesture one last time. Alas, he did not. Mother-pucker.

Who else was making faces at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards? Watch our Party Lines slideshow to get a glimpse of John Galliano, Charlize Theron, and more!

Artist Jeff Sonhouse Saves You the Cost of LSD

Jeff Sonhouse's The Spirit of a Hypocrite (2008).

Jeff Sonhouse paints prominent — Condoleezza Rice, Diddy — and not so prominent African-Americans into colorful, distorted, geometrical compositions that render the subject barely recognizable but for the occasional giveaway detail. Condi, for example, becomes identifiable by her trademark sculpted hair made from steel wool; this guy’s hair, on the other hand, made of bright-yellow vegetable-like matter, reminds us of those posters they distributed in grade school that said “you are what you eat.” See Sonhouse’s tactile paintings at Tilton Gallery through December 23.

‘The Hills’ Gives Us a Quickie Existential Crisis

We just wanted to give you a big ol' close-up of J.B. You're welcome.

Yesterday it was announced that The Hills will return for a fifth season, about which we have mixed feelings. On the one hand: Yay, more Justin Bobby! On the other: Our best friend just told us she’s pregnant, our brother got married last weekend, and we’ll be recapping The Hills … until God knows when. A question to all our readers: When is one too old to recap (or watch, for that matter) an MTV show made for teenagers? In two and half years we’ll be 30 — gasp! — after which we may announce our retirement. [Ed: Don't you even think about it, Rosenblum. These bitches will be with you forever.] For now, though, on with the show...

This week, Whitney and Lauren are hard at fake-work at People’s Revolution when Lauren reveals the interesting tidbit that Heidi’s sister, Holly, who was recently booted from Speidi’s apartment, has been staying in Audrina’s former slave quarters. Whitney weighs in that after such maltreatment Holly doesn’t owe Heidi “any-thin-k,” and Lauren’s expressive eyes agree.

Meanwhile, Justin Bobby and Audrina are taking a romantic walk in Venice Beach — the west side, “my side,” says J.B. — and the lovers sashay past tattoo parlors and dirty surfers. Audrina is wearing a midriff-baring shirt that’s very 1996, and J.B.’s wearing a sweater that may or may not be purposefully ripped (he is a mysterious man). They make plans to go to Mexico, and Justin reflects on the landscape: “There’s something Zenful about it. The sunsets are nice, too.” Oh, Justin, you’re so cute when you make up words!

But Audrina shouldn't be so easily wooed, notes her sister Casey — who is full of wisdom, in spite of her unfortunately wide-set alien eyes. She tells Audrina that she shouldn’t trust Justin, given his shady past behavior. “When it’s good for him, he’s all about it,” says Casey. Or, as the great Roberta Flack would say, “I love him now, it’s true; he likes me, yes, no more than that.” Sing it, sister.

Later on at dinner, Justin Bobby, wearing his uniform of a leather jacket and dorky hat, gives Audrina a gift! It’s a white shirt she wanted, and he tells her to wear it without a bra. If that’s not love, we’ve don’t know what is. “It’s all about growing up — living and learning,” he says, Zenfully.

Now on to Heidi and her job search: We’re going to get through this quickly, because it’s a BORING and STUPID plotline. Heidi and Spencer get into a fight because she blames him for Holly's leaving and the loss of her job (both legit claims). Heidi and her big ol’ cross head over to Bolthouse to beg Slimy Sam for her job back. Surprise! He rehires her. Then big-mouth Stephanie ruins the moment of joy by telling Heidi and Spencer that Holly is staying at Lauren’s. Spencer, wisely, blames Heidi’s "stalker mom." The end!

Next week. Lauren hooks up with Justin Bobby! NOOOOOOOOOO. Then she cries, probably because he smelled so bad from not showering for three years.

And now, our Unequivocal Hills Reality Index:

As Real As Spencer Is Bored All Day
• The fact that Lo tells Holly that she doesn’t have to clean while she stays at their house. They obviously have some servant who does that for them.
• Audrina tells J.B. that she’s never dated a guy her age; if we’ve seen one dirty-old-man whore, we’ve seen them all.
• J.B.’s toothbrush. Even though we don’t get to see it, we believe it’s at Aud’s house, in all its grungy glory.

As Fake As Lo’s Hospitality
• Holly’s decision to move into Lauren’s house. Uh-huh.
• Heidi’s employment. Too annoying to address.
• Heidi’s cleavage during her "meeting." Well, the cleavage is real; the breast-eses are not.

We were getting the impression that taking swipes at Gladwell-as-superstar has reached its tipping point, so we made like Malcolm and did some thin-slicing. Below, we separate Gladwell's critics into the following categories: Prigs, Wannabes, Accountants, and Haters.

Prigs (who lovingly mock his style)

The Independent:
“A youthful 45, with an eclectic, vaguely hipster dress sense … and that signature mad scientist afro, he is a cliché of furious intellect.”

Gregory Kirschling, Entertainment Weekly:
"a poufy-haired showman"

Tim Adams, The Guardian:
"Gladwell’s gift for interdisciplinary cross-dressing once again makes it look extremely fashionable."

Wannabes (who crave his fame)

Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times:
“In the years since his success, I have wondered — probably like a lot of other literary types who haven't written a book that wound up on the world's nightstands — what's he got that the rest of us haven't?”

Louis Bayard, Salon:
“Gladwell has positioned himself as a roving ambassador between cultural and corporate America, penetrating boardrooms and living rooms, providing bullet points for cocktail parties and management seminars…”

Heller McAlpin, Christian Science Monitor:
“Like most highly successful people, Gladwell is skilled, talented, and driven. His particular gift is the ability to see common social phenomena from an unexpected angle and to convey his insights in enormously engaging anecdotes and analysis.”

Accountants (who covet his cash)

Sabitri Ghosh, The Globe and Mail:
“He reportedly commands fees of $40,000 (U.S.) per speaking engagement and, in 2005, Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.”

Danielle Sacks, Fast Company
“With Gladwell's hourly speaking fee up to some $80,000 (it was $40,000 when we profiled him)…”

Haters (who hate him)

Roger Gathman, The Austin American Statesman:
“…it's high time for Gladwell to produce something more challenging than his beautifully executed tomb robberies of old sociology papers.”

John Horgan, Slate:
"But I still can't help but feel that Outliers represents a squandered opportunity for Gladwell — himself an outlier, an enormously talented and influential writer and the descendant of an African slave — to make a major contribution to our ongoing discourse about nature, nurture, and race."

Alexander McQueen Wants People in the Midwest to Wear His Clothes

A peak at McQueen's Target line.

Alexander McQueen's Target line could not be more fitting in this time of change. He decided to do the collection, launching in March and retailing for under $129.99, because he wants to reach across the pond, and then to a handful of states and shake hands via his clothes with residents of Indiana, Iowa, and Kansas. He tells WWD:

“Apart from the East and West Coasts, my company doesn’t have any visibility in the U.S.,” he said. “I always liked the idea of people in the Midwest wearing my clothes. The idea of this upstart from London going where people haven’t heard of me, I think that was interesting to me. I think it’s quite adventurous of Target.”

He calls it adventurous, we call it genius. McQueen's goals are at once modest and lofty. He doesn't ask that Iowans even remember his name, but just the feeling of the East End underground music scene his clothes are meant to impart. "If you start to give the whole of America that sense of where I’m from, the underground music scene, it’s not so much about a logo, it’s more about a feeling,” he tells WWD. He hopes to use the Target line to leverage distribution of his lower-priced McQ line across the States. “There is no way the main line could go to Middle America,” he says. So sad, but so true. Equally sad: McQueen said this would be his only diffusion line for Target or a similar retailer. “I don’t like to repeat myself … If I do it all the time, it dilutes the concept,” he says. Which is why we love him.

Cedric the Entertainer Brings Product Placement to Broadway, Promotes Underage Drinking

John Leguizamo gripped a cloth-draped bottle of whiskey at the opening-night party for American Buffalo, a gift, he explained, from his co-star Cedric the Entertainer. "It's Crown Royal with my name on it, and American Buffalo Opening Night," Leguizamo said. Why did Cedric give him that? "I don’t know," Leguizamo said. He tried to pry off the cap, "Come on, have a sip," he urged. We declined, but we were still curious about the gift, so we asked Cedric. "In the play I drink Crown Royal," he told us later. "And then Crown Royal’s been a great supporter of mine for many years. They did The Original Kings of Comedy, they were one of the big sponsors, and they’ve just been behind me, supporting me for many years. So we just thought it was great that we embroidered a bottle and gave them a very rare bottle of Crown Royal with their name and the opening date. We just thought it would be a nice gesture.”

So this is basically product placement in a Broadway play? "Why not?" he said. "You know, that’s the world we’re in. We’re in a recession. My God, we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do." Cedric nixed the whiskey for his other co-star, Haley Joel Osment, and instead presented him with an Xbox 360. NYU student Osment, who was once charged with DUI, is not yet 21. "He can't drink, unfortunately," Cedric told us. "But, you know, I might slip him a little bit anyway. He’s in college — I’m sure he's drinking."

World Not a Fan of Beyoncé’s Metal Glove

We've said Beyoncé's metal glove scares us. We're convinced it's going to get caught on her hair or on her Alexander McQueen or that she'll bring her hand up too fast to wave on the red carpet and it will fly off and smack her or an unsuspecting Extra reporter in the face. In a poll of more than 700, 96 percent said, "Leave the glove-wearing to Michael Jackson," while only 4 percent said, "It looks like a fun new fashion trend, sign me up." Hey, Beyoncé, it's never too late to, you know, not wear it. [USA Today]

Hard Times Hit ‘Days of Our Lives’

We don't typically report on soap-opera news here on Vulture, but this is big: According to Soap Opera Digest, Deidre Hall (Dr. Marlena Evans) and Drake Hogestyn (John Black) have been axed from Days of Our Lives for budget reasons (the show got an eighteen-month renewal last week, a dramatic difference from the previous five-year one). Granted, we haven't watched the show in like ten years, but these were major characters when we last tuned in — Hall has been on Days for 32 years, and Hogestyn has been there for 22. Plus, we imagine things are pretty much exactly the same in Salem, with the days of our lives continuing to resemble sands through the hourglass. Hodestyn's exit has been rumored for a while now, but after John Black seemed to die in October 2007, he returned to the show in January. (Stefano had been keeping him in his basement and reprogramming him!!) This time, however, the good-bye to the beloved character and his long-term love seems more permanent. Says executive producer Ken Corday, "The couple will be happily reunited after a long period of angst and separation and will be off-screen after January for an unknown period of time. It was a very tough decision to make." Our mom is gonna be crushed.

This photo released by Activision shows a wacky bandicoot that is once again tormented by the evil Dr. Neo Cortex in “Crash: Mind Over Mutant”. (AP Photo/Activision)AP - The platform game has fallen on hard times. Maybe it's that name, which came about in the 1980s when Mario was actually jumping on moving platforms in "Super Mario Bros." But the genre needs a catchier title, like "running-jumping-bouncing-super-fun-action-adventure." There has to be a Japanese word that encompasses all that.
