Mallika Sherawat features in the November issue of Grazia

What do you call a lady who owns the patent of all the three degrees of Hot, Hotter and Hottest? Before you start rattling down names or disturb the traffic of Google, let us tell you that she is none other than Madame Mallika Sherawat, who is (needles to say) all over not just the place, but also over everyone's hearts! If that was not enough, then, she is in a very corporately chic avatar in the latest edition of the fashion magazine Grazia. They talk about the 'Girl next door'. But looking at Mallika, even this tag fails to impress the situation. The term that really describes her best is 'The Boss Next Cabin'. For starters, Mallika, who is known for her 'words-faster-than-bullets' kind of speech, has mellowed down now, and which shows in the whole of the interview. The whole article is more of an A-Z of Mallika (from what she was to what she is today), which is accompanied by snaps (full marks to the photographer for presenting her like never before) which complements the article. A small mention to the section of '5 Things To Know About Mallika', which gives an insight of the 'Real Mallika'! All in all, it's indeed a collectors issue to say the least!

"Today's audience is ruthless" - Madhur Bhandarkar

Fashion is a success and in the process has turned out to be the biggest money spinner of Madhur Bhandarkar's decade long career. While brand Madhur has been created in the process, the filmmaker continues to be obsessed with telling different stories in his own experimental manner. A fortnight after the release of the film, as he finally settles down to the fact that he has to move on to the next project, Madhur Bhandarkar gets into this Exclusive two part conversation with Joginder Tuteja where he bares his heart out about the success of Fashion and how it still won't change his approach towards movie making. With a multi crore commercial success like Fashion under your belt, is it goodbye to serious cinema and welcome to hardcore money spinner worthy commercial cinema? Actually, I have never ever got into matters like these. I have always maintained that I am an experimental filmmaker whose films also get commercial viability. This way, I am truly blessed because my films also get critical acclaim and also National awards. I am really happy with the kind of cinema I make, the subjects I explore and the treatment I give to my films. But when a film like Fashion does such business, isn't it tempting to go for those mega bucks? See, the subject of Fashion was such that it required huge budget due. The movie was required to be opulent with a mega look and sheer grandeur to boast. A budget comes after you have short listed the subject and this is how my films in future too would be planned. I am not someone who makes proposal cinema ki chalo 3 hero le lo, 3 heroine daal do aur kuch gaane bhi bhar do! Right from Chandni Bar to Fashion, the film's scale has been set as per the script. I went to swanky boardrooms for Corporate; I entered the dingy by lanes for Traffic Signal. A budget comes after you have short listed the subject and this is how my films in future too would be planned Please carry on… Tomorrow I may make a film for which I am just require an Rs. 8 crore budget; I don't have to make my next movie also as big as Fashion. It's not that because my last film was made in Rs. 30 crores, the next has to carry a Rs. 60 crores budget. Scenario may have only improved after Fashion, isn't it? I guess I can stand up and say that producers have been knocking the doors with even more vigor. It may sound immodest to a few but let me state a fact - I have spent last 8-9 years making a brand for myself. This time period has seen each of my movies making money. Moreover, all of them have been made in a certain kind of preset budget; something which my producers have always acknowledged. They know that Madhur guarantees definite recovery and also ensures profit inflow. What has been the secret of making it happen film after film? I know for sure how to cut cost and resist the temptation of going overboard. I also don't opt for fancy locations just for the sake of it and instead try shooting at real locations as much as possible. I also keep in constant touch with my exhibitors and distributors and discuss about audience's taste, emerging trends and how investment could be recovered. This is what makes my films safer and I end up getting 3 to 4 times the investment back. No wonder, producers have maintained that Madhur is a producer's director (smiles). I also keep in constant touch with my exhibitors and distributors and discuss about audience's taste, emerging trends and how investment could be recovered Since you always aspire to pick up experimental subjects, doesn't it become risky project after project? You are right in saying that because the fact is that each of the subjects that I have explored has been dicey for me. However, where I get all my knowledge and learning is by interacting with so many people. I don't make films by doing a DVD rip off or picking up a South Indian film for a remake. I know for sure that the way I make my films, it turns out to be a tedious process. It is risky too and also takes more time. But then tell me, which movie is secure today? Even if it is a hardcore commercial cinema with 3 heroes and 3 heroines, is it safe anymore? Can anyone guarantee that they would work at the box office? No one can. I don't make films by doing a DVD rip off or picking up a South Indian film for a remake You seem to be unsure about the way audience would react! See, today's audience is ruthless. It gets it after the opening show on Friday itself that whether the film was indeed made with a purpose or was it just a proposal in the making. At the end of the day it is merit that does all the talking. Star system or big budget sure shot successes are a passe. At the end of the day it is all about content and I am really happy that there is a major revamp in the industry and the audience. (Watch this space to read the second part of Madhur Bhandarkar's interview)

Book Review: Koffee With Karan

'Koffee With Karan' - One wonders whether Karan Johar himself is aware about this book being published. Agreed that he has been all busy with Dostana and yet-to-get-on-floors My Name Is Khan, but it is rather surprising that he hasn't uttered a single word on 'Koffee With Karan', the book which has found it's way into the shelves. This is a book which publishes the script of some of the select celebrity chats that Karan Johar engaged with in his extremely popular television show by the same name which has been running season after season. A good idea indeed which is let down completely due to poor layout and presentation! That's right. What could well have been an engaging exercise is relegated to being a chapter-by-chapter account of what happened in each of the episodes; just like it would happen in a school text book. In fact the layout format of 'Koffee With Karan' appears to be a school/college guide with an unimaginative design, boring presentation and some tiresome read. Of course, on the face value it did seem like a good idea i.e. to present the scripts of all the episodes verbatim for readers to cherish in case they have missed seeing them on the telly. In fact, even for those who have seen the episodes already, it may not have been a bad idea to revisit all the fun, humor and scandals that were unveiled in trademark Karan style. However, it is choice of publication house which is the piece of the villain here since it doesn't even try to benefit from the big opportunity it had in hand and instead merely places the entire script in a chapter after chapter format. While the conversational text does become cumbersome after a point (there are close to 550 pages in the book), what makes it readable to some extent are the snippets that are placed page after page which highlights some of the quotable quotes. In fact I found myself only going through them after a point in time since that seemed to be good enough for me to gather any 'masala', if at all it was present in any episode. Beyond this, 'Koffee With Karan' turns out to be a book which one may want to finish one chapter at a time in one's spare time. In nutshell, hardly a book which classifies itself as 'can't be put down till the last page is through' kinds. For those who are interested to know the episodes that the book covers, the celebrities being covered are Shah Rukh, Kajol, Rani, Kareena, Preity, Saif, Aishwarya, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Fardeen, Zayed, Gurinder Chadha, Farah Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Gauri Khan, Suzanne Roshan, Bipasha, Lara, Ekta Kapoor, Sunita Menon, Sushmita, Sanjay Dutt, Rakhi Sawant, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Shabana Azmi, Shobha Dey, Rahul Bose, Konkona Sen, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Malaika Arora, Amrita Arora, Neetu Singh, Rishi Kapoor, Esha Deol, Shahid Kapoor, Hema Malini and Zeenat Aman. Some of the quotes that made 'Koffee With Karan' the celebrity show it was are reproduced as below: "The strangest thing people wonder about me is whether I am a homosexual or bisexual. You know, I cannot have two kids by heavy petting" - Shah Rukh Khan "Anil Kapoor was the worst dancer I have ever worked with" - Farah Khan "I often love to hate Aishwarya" - Sanjay Leela Bhansali "I believe that doctors would give you what God could not" - Rakhi Sawant "Good girls go to heaven; naughty girls go everywhere" - Amrita Arora "Vivek Oberoi is the most over rated actor in Hindi cinema" - Sanjay Leela Bhansali "People came to see Bipasha Basu in Jism; no one came to see me" - John Abraham "Women's feet turn me on" - Sanjay Dutt "Aamir Khan told me that I was doing Sameer's character all wrong in Dil Chahta Hai" - Saif Ali Khan "Aishwarya Rai is the worst dressed Indian woman" - Shobha De "90 percent of Indian cinema is crap" - Rahul Bose "I am affirming that the casting couch for men exists in the modeling world" - Arjun Rampal "The best part about being a superstar is that you can wear the most outrageous of clothes and they say 'it's in!'" - Amitabh Bachchan Of course quite a few of these quotes were made months back when the episodes were telecast (and may have even lost relevance today) but nevertheless they do make for a spicy read at places. In the end, 'Koffee With Karan' isn't even the kind which would turn on the biggest of the movie buffs. At maximum, its readership is restricted to the select few who have been absolutely clueless about how the show 'Koffee With Karan' looked like (difficult to imagine such a breed!) or those who were in love with the show and want to go through the chapters due to sheer nostalgia. Price: Rs. 395/= Rating: **

Before Asin, another South sensation Sada debuts

Download image as wallpaper The way media is going ballistic over the Hindi film debut of South import Asin, it is being widely speculated that she could well be the next Big thing that Bollywood is laying out the red carpet for. Of course, being a part of an Aamir Khan film comes with its own perks and there is no wondering the fact that Ghajini is not just being noticed for the perfectionist Khan but also his latest heartthrob on screen - Asin. However, even as Asin waits for her Bollywood debut till 25th December, the day when Ghajini releases, another sensation from South, Sada, would be announcing her arrival in Bollywood. Though the pretty girl hasn't been hogging the limelight in a manner similar to that of Asin, Sada too comes with a decent repertoire of films behind her, most notable being Anniyan which has already been released in Hindi as Aparichit. The film had arrived in theaters 2 years back and was a decent grosser even in its Hindi version. The doors opened for Sada then and soon she went into a signing spree. Of course, not all her choices could be really called smart but out of the four films that she signed and has almost finished shooting for, she is now waiting for her first film to make an arrival at the big screen. Well, the wait is over for Sada as she would be debuting 10 days from now in Khallballi - Fun Unlimited where she is paired with Nikhil Dwivedi who himself debuted earlier this year in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves. Though Sada is not featuring in what one may call as a 'heroine oriented role', what cannot be denied is the fact that the film belongs to comedy genre, something that should click with the audience. Says director Ajay Chandok, for whom Khallballi - Fun Unlimited is his next directorial outing after Nehlle Pe Dehlla (Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu), "We were looking at a right face in this film which is mainly dominated by close to three dozen comic actors. She had to be someone who would stand out in the crowd and Sada fitted in the bill perfectly well. As Nikhil Dwivedi's love interest, she gets the glamour quotient on in the film." After the release of Khallballi - Fun Unlimited on 28th November, Sada would also be seen in Click (opposite Shreyas Talpade), Love Khichdi (with Randeep Hooda) and Raja Bundela's Sirf Romance - Love By Chance.

"My wife was apprehensive of Dostana" - Tarun Mansukhani

In the world of presumptuous people, first time director Tarun Mansukhani is honest enough to admit that his own wife wasn't too sure about his directorial capacity. Married for 3 years, Tarun has known the love of his life for close to 12 years. Of course she had seen him working hard for last one decade in the capacity of an Assistant Director but she understood that making a movie all by yourself is a different ball game altogether. This is why she held her breath as she watched the final cut of Dostana for the first time with her husband. "Oh, my wife is my staunchest critic and I had to seek her approval before anyone else to guess the verdict on Dostana. Thankfully when she watched it, she was all taken aback with what she saw. Perhaps she wasn't quite confident about the skill her husband comes with", laughs the young filmmaker who is just 32 years old. "But in essence I am even younger. I could well pass off as an 18 year old in my attitude when it comes to living life. Sometimes I feel like driving rash and am really childish in my behavior. Perhaps Dostana would now make me more mature though I have to see how it happens, considering my next is an animation film", smiles Tarun. First a love story and then an animation film - Has he decided the world of feel good cinema as the chosen genre? "No, it isn't as if I picked up a particular genre or I am not open to exploring another subject. Tomorrow it could be a horror flick or a thriller drama. See, I didn't really plan out how my debut film would look like. Dostana happened and I am happy that it has been accepted. Tomorrow I may experiment and make something different. I may fall, I would get up again but I wouldn't stop fighting", Tarun's mouths the famous last words. It appears that taking feedback from your loved ones and trusting it to be the Gospel's truth is fast emerging as trend amongst Bollywood folks. While John truly relied upon Bipasha to pass her judgement on Dostana (to his relief Bipasha truly loved the film and complimented him for the drool value that his physique generated and the camaraderie that he shared with Abhishek), Himesh Reshammiya too was super confident about Karzzzz the moment his son gave the film a Thumbs Up.

Pakistan lifts ban on Dostana; the film gets released in Lahore

Till Sunday, while the whole of India couldn't stop rolling with laughter looking at the antics of two on-screen 'self-confessed' homosexuals (read Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham) in the Kjo's Dostana, the Pakistanis were having it otherwise, after the Lahore High Court imposed a ban on the film stating that it has some highly objectionable "gay content", following a writ petition filed by Khuram Khan, who maintained that Dostana promoted gay marriage which is prohibited in Islam and all other religions. But from today, the Pakistanis too can join their Indian counterparts, with the Lahore High Court lifting the ban and giving a go-ahead for provisional screening in four cinemas of Lahore. All of this came with a clause that the countrywide screening would be allowed only after they get the final and total consent from the Pakistan Film Censor Board. Hopefully, this Dostana will eventually spread its wings to both the countries as well.

Right now I'm gathering my thoughts on that and letting the script take shape as I go along." Karnik is in Ajmer to show Heroes to the students of his erstwhile school Mayo College.

Fashion Magazine Verve's collaboration with Dostana

These are really the days of collaborations. Latest one being the collaboration between fashion magazine Verve and this season's blockbuster, Dostana. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Parmesh Shahani, Editorial Director- Verve, said, "We wanted to be associated with the films that reflect the spirit of Verve. Not just that, the banner should be a prestigious one and that the placement of our esteemed brand should be with the flow of the film and not just as a mere prop. And Dostana is one such film which fitted our parameters to a 'T'. The guys at Verve were so impressed with the way the film has shaped up that they have dedicated their November issue to the film and have also named the issue as 'Dostana Special'. Shahani finds immense pride in saying that "We are really very happy to be associated with Dostana, as 'Verve' is at the same wavelength as that of John, Abhishek and Priyanka." The cast of Dostana had even paid a visit to the Verve office to get references for the film. With Dostana going great guns at the Box-Office, one thing is for sure that the Dostana-Verve association is just the tip of the iceberg!

Bobby Deol is setting up a production empire

After losing ten kgs for his role in Chamku, Bobby Deol is now heavily into chocolates. "It wasn't easy for me to lose weight. But once I made up my mind, I did it. But now I'm trying to make back that weight and binging on chocolates." Like his dad and elder brother, Bobby Deol is now fully into family concerns. In fact the younger Deol scion is so much into production now, he wishes he had got into before. "It's with my film Chamku that I've become involved with our home production. I've been totally involved with its shooting and post-production. I'm like an apprentice on the job, learning about how to produce a film. My brother believes I've been lazy. But I now realize home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that THEY believe in. For Chamku, I was part of the music sitting, pre-production, post-production. It's my baby." Bobby now wants to assist directors and get more proficient with the technique of filmmaking. "I've been part of this industry for years. And my brother is into direction. I don't feel ready for it. I wish I was." What Bobby is ready for is another film with his father Dharmendra. "It's a father-son story. There's no other way we can come together on screen. Sangeeth Sivan is directing it. It's the story of a father and son discovering each other during a journey. Then I'm doing an action-comedy with Sunny Deol. But it won't be just fun. We brothers will share a lot of emotional moments We can't come together without sharing emotions. That will be directed by Samir Karnik who's another of my favourite director's right now. I've done two films with Samir and we Deols are very impressed by his work." Sangeeth Sivan and Samir Karnik are part of a new set of directors the Deols want to cultivate, like they once nurtured the talents of Gurinder Chadha and Raj Kumar Santoshi. Says Bobby, "Though I'm open to outside offers, it's definitely more productive to do home productions where everything is under our control. And we have three in house actors." Dad Dharmendra recently underwent knee surgery in the US. "And he has recovered very well. I'm dying to work with him."

Mohanlal prepares to film action scene with Jackie Chan

Akshay Kumar, go eat your art out. The Malayalam maverick Mohanlal is all set to do a full-on action scene with Jackie Chan. The film in Japanese called Nair San directed by Keralite, Albert, is based on a real-life character. And Mohanlal learnt Japanese for the role. He now steps into the action arena for an action scene with Jackie Chan who makes a special appearance in Nair San. Says Mohanlal, "Jackie Chan appears in a major action sequence with me. I'm trying to physically prepare for the role. I've already shot for about 150 days for Nair San in Japan and Mongalia. I'm the first actor from Malayalam cinema to feature in a Japanese film. I've to speak not only in Japanese, but also in Chinese and Mongolian." Nair San will be subtitled in English and released all over the world. The action scene with Jackie Chan will be shot in Mongolia. Says Mohanlal, "Nair was an Indian freedom fighter. I've met the man. He owns a chain of restaurants. I've been to his restaurant in Tokyo. And he has been to my home in Kerala. He passed away at the age of 85-86. I feel very privileged to be playing Nair." Interestingly, Mohanlal's southern colleague Rajnikanth is a craze in Japan. Speaking on the failure of Rajnikanth's new film Kuselan, Mohanlal observes, "Actors like Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth are larger than life. They cannot be accepted in guest roles. I can get away with small cameos, off beat roles, walk-on parts anything. I'm playing a 90- year old man in a new film. There're some actors in this country like Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, Kamal Haasan and Rajnikant who are beyond success and failure. They're blessed people, if you say I am one of them then I too am blessed." Mohanlal's new Malayalam release Akashagoparam is the first film that language to be based on an Ibsen play. "I can tell you this much. Ibsen at this point of time couldn't be done in any other language but Malayalam. I'm fortunate to have done it. As an actor, it's my job to do the best of the roles I get. However, the roles have to come to me. I can't go after the roles." Says the softspoken actor, "It was director K P Kumaran's dream for twenty years. He had been pursuing me for fifteen years to do a screen adaptation of Ibsen's play. I finally agreed. Ibsen's The Master Builder is a complicated play. I've done stage plays including a play in Sanskrit. But Ibsen is tough. However, I treated the film like any other. I play an architect. Changes were made. For example my character's Norwegian name was changed for the Indian audience." Mohanlal has also finished a war film Kuruskshetra on the Kargil war. "It's a major film." About his last aborted foray in Bollywood, Mohanlal says he has no regrets about doing Ram Gopal Varma's Aag. "People just pounced on Ramu. They forgot how much he has achieved in the past. Such things happen. In fact Priyadarshan has just offered me a role in a Hindi film to be done in the middle of next year. I get a lot of Hindi films. But they don't interest me. But I'll do Priyan's film. It's 12-13 day film. It isn't a conventional Hindi film. It has a message on AIDS. Priyan is returning to his roots. He recently did a fantastic Malayalam film called Kanjeevaram. I was supposed to do it. But I couldn't. Now I'm looking forward to working with him and to doing a Hindi film."
