Barneys Loves the Man Skirt, But Bloomingdale’s Isn’t Sold

Julie Gilhart: man-skirt fan.

What is the future of the man skirt? We asked the fashion set last night at the kickoff party for Housing Works' weekend-long Fashion for Action discounted-designer-merch megasale. Marc Jacobs has been wearing them regularly since his New York show in September. Who else should wear one? And could a recession perhaps be the break that the man skirt has long sought?

Barneys fashion director Julie Gilhart said she was pretty sure her store already carried them. "Our men's buyer would have no hesitation carrying them," she said. "Not a lot, just a little bit. Men are really sexy in skirts." Style curator Natalie Kates added, "Especially if they have nice calves or are wearing some nice Doc Martens." Okay, ladies!

The important issue, though, is the man skirt's shot at a spot on the sales floor at Bloomingdale's, that transom between fey high fashion and the masses. The store's men's- and home-fashion director, Kevin Harter, gave mixed man-skirt signals. "I don't think we'll see it on the rack in Bloomingdale's," he said. But if he had to market it? "You make statements via windows and things. But I can tell you right now, I don't think a skirt for men will ever end up in Bloomingdale's." A lot of people didn't think they'd live to see a black president, we reminded him. He became thoughtful. "I can tell you — with what's going on [with the economy], everybody has to think outside the box," he said. So what kind of green-light signal did he need? "We're always looking to see what guys are wearing downtown, on the streets, in restaurants. If we started noticing it in those areas, we'd consider it."

Do you hear that, skirt-yearning men of New York? If you want your own quasi-affordable man skirt available at Bloomingdale's, you better improvise something first, like Edie Beale, and wear it until Harter and his colleagues notice a critical mass of you. We will be supplying extra pairs of eyes for them via our iPhone cameras.

The Billion-Dollar Batman

Ex–Lehman Brothers chief Dick Fuld consigned his de Kooning–heavy art collection to Christie’s; a Sotheby’s show of contemporary-painting superstars was a near-total bust. Keith Olbermann signed on for four more years at MSNBC, at $7.5 million per. Confused commuters scratched their heads over prank copies of the Times bearing the headline "Iraq War Ends." Top Chef: New York, hosted by local gal Padma Lakshmi, 86'd two contestants while viewers were still being seated. And skinny, stylish cheapskates celebrated Christmas early, thronging the new Comme des Garçons collection at H&M.

We wonder if the readerships of fashion magazines are growing less attractive to advertisers. A new report shows the average household income of women who read these magazines is largely down. The largest decline (18.4 percent) goes to Harper's Bazaar, whose average reader makes $62,465; Lucky's readers are down 7.7 percent for an average of $80,778; and Vogue's are down 2.3 percent to $64,429. Ironic considering the price tags of the stuff in these magazines. Fifteen handbags in Vogue could equal one reader's entire yearly salary. Is it any wonder newsstand sales are down, too?

John Mayer Cuts Back on Luxury Joyrides

Rich people, take behavioral cues from John Mayer. The introspective troubadour told us last night at Keep a Child Alive’s annual Black Ball that there are some activities that must be curtailed in a recession because they’re too ostentatious. “There are certain things I don’t think I would do right now because it’s not a time to celebrate the country in terms of the economy,” Mayer said. “Even if I had a Ferrari, I don’t think I’d take it out. You know, you’ve got to stay sort of demure.” Learn more about social mores from Justin Timberlake, Queen Latifah, and others by watching our Party Lines slideshow.

‘Gossip Girl’ Doesn't Know a Lot About Parents

"Goonies are good enough, Blair."

A lot of you dear readers thought that "Bonfire of the Vanity" was the WORST.EPISODE.EVER. And just as many of you had problems with Rufus's parenting, Eleanor's parenting, Bart's parenting, our characterization of Bart's parenting, and even Lily's parenting (where the hell was she this episode, anyway?). But not enough of you had a problem with the fact that any New York Magazine cameo on the show would not be complete without a visit to the office, where two unwashed gremlins in corner cubicles would stare hungrily at Dan, licking their lips and taking camera-phone pictures gleefully. Seriously. We didn't even need to have any lines! Walk-on roles would have been enough!

Anyway, a lot of you had gripes about the lack of Clueless and Princess Bride references in the script, but none of you caught our genius (if you ask us) reference to PB in our recap! Blast!

Realer Than the Frantic Tone of That Intern’s Voice

• Bart doesn't care about Dan — he's still got a chip on his shoulder about the fact that Rufus is hotter/better in bed/Lily's one true love/has superior hair. Plus 2 because nothing that Bart does is altruistic. — BRAXTONHICKS, echoed all around

Plus 2 for Eleanor willingness to ditch Blair's party for a Cyndy Lauper concert with Cyrus. — CAPT

Plus 5 for Serena continuously ditching her best friend in her times of need for some boy shes not even sure about. We've all been there. — SPOTTED423

• Actually, I kind of like that for once, GG showed one of the children doing actual HOMEWORK, even though Chuck reading on his bed was an unlikely candidate. I'd give this a Plus 3. GJO

• Agnes: "Your screechy voice is doing nothing for my pounding headache." Thank God someone finally told Jenny to tone it down. Plus 4. CASSANDOVER17X

Plus 10 for Jenny's shriek of "You're out of your mind!" Very realistic 15-year-old-whose-world-is-crashing-down-around-her shriek. I was impressed. — PURPLEANDGREEN

Plus 5 for Jenny filing for emancipation, because what teenage girl didn't seriously consider doing the same upon learning it was possible? — OMFGITSMAGGIE

Faker Than Aaron's Murky Age and Lineage:

• If Cyrus Rose divorced his ex-wife after the Golden Lion died at the end of the Vietnam War, wouldn't that make Aaron, i don't know, 33 YEARS OLD?!? Minus 10.LAUGHLOVELIVE, echoed all around

Minus 5. Because no self respecting New Yorker would stop in the middle of the sidewalk in Times Square to make out, no matter how 'dreamy' the boy may be. — WONKETTELOVER, echoed all around

Minus 1 because don't the writers know that Cyrus Rose's first true love was a teacher in Beverly Hills by the name of Ms. Geist? — NGFROMFL

Minus 5 for Bart Bass turning into a complete PUSSY and suddenly confessing to being responsible for the death of a man... The guy is a billionaire real estate investment mogul. Are we really to believe he breaks down to a 17 year old who is totally transparently sucking up to him? — SOPHIEROSE

Minus 3 for "lovelace3@anonymousurl.com." I mean, really? It couldn't be something at Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, ANYTHING other than "@anonymousurl.com?" Is that a big e-mail server I'm missing? — MARTELL

Minus 5: Kim Lee does not mean "Golden Lion" in Vietnamese. Kim Lee is not even a Vietnamese name. — LITTLEJ

Minus 5 for no birthday present from Chuck. Birthdays are the holy grail of excuses to talk to exes for no apparent reason. — BAMBII

Minus 3 for Blair and Eleanor spending carefree childhood days lip-synching to 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'. Blair, sweetie - that was with your father. — BRAXTONHICKS

Minus 4 for Rufus, the parent who has given up actual parenting to play his guitar alone at home. — MICHAEL CONNELLY (NY MAG)

Minus 2 for Serena's outfit during the photoshoot. Tights are not pants!!! Her shirt was so short I thought Gossip Girl was going to introduced yet another character of Serena's this week.... — CEE5283

Minus 5 because any normal 'acting out' teenager would just forge their parents signature to get what they want (or was that just me) — BLIZ7734

Our totals:
Real: 160 (weighted heavily by a 100-point bonus for New York inclusion)
Fake: 62

Combined totals:
Real: 196
Fake: 110

Sometimes Women Do Purchase Things With Their Own Money

Guy Richie would have totally returned a fur for Madge.

Reading a certain item in "Page Six" today felt like rubbing sandpaper on our eyeballs. We really didn't like how it made us feel. It's about how men are returning luxury items like shoes, bags, and fur coats to stores for their wives.

"It's as if the women are too embarrassed, or too upset, to come in themselves. It's too painful for them to part with their recent purchases," said one retailer. "So they make their husbands perform the painful chore." And it's fitting for the man to collect the cash, since he paid for the unnecessary items in the first place.

Because there is no way women would buy these things with their own money because they don't have, oh dammit, what are they called? Careers. You know, all on their own without their husbands. Nope, there is no way there is one woman like that who also happens to have things to return and whose husband returned them for her because she's busy. And who is to say those men didn't buy any of that stuff for themselves? If there's one thing we've learned from Gossip Girl, it's that you never know.

A JOB FOR GUYS [NYP]

Week in Review: Other Things We Can’t Blame on Ben Silverman

This morning, we were relieved to find out that, despite our initial fears, the two shows NBC canceled this week were in no way the fault of Vulture hero Ben Silverman. We're not sure why we were so quick to assign blame, considering that lots of things happened this week that weren't his fault. They include the following:

• Leaking David Cook's album.

Benjamin Button's bad blog reviews.

White, middle-aged liberals have been positively spilling over with emotion since the election. And many have taken the opportunity to pour out their feelings by writing, well, some of the most embarrassing personal essays we've seen since 9/11. Herewith, our favorites of the week.

Maureen Dowd was so excited when she observed blacks and whites "intermingling" in Washington, D.C., in the wake of the election that she decided to try it, too:

I heard my cute black mailman talking in an excited voice outside my house Friday, so I decided I should go ask him how he was feeling about everything, the absolute amazement of the first black president.

“Are you talking about the election?” I said brightly. “How do you feel?”
He shot me a look of bemused disdain as he walked away. I suddenly realized, with embarrassment, that he was on his Bluetooth, deep in a personal conversation that had nothing to do with Barack Obama.

Yeah, that was awkward. But it's okay, because she can talk about the election with Gwen Ifill because, she noted in her column, they are friends, because MoDo doesn't actually see color — she was just being self-deprecating.

• In The New Yorker, Roger Angell wrote about how the election made him think, "predictably" about Martin Luther King Jr. and less predictably about this black guy he knew at Harvard, Lucien Victor Alexis Jr. Well, he didn't really "know him" know him.

His name wasn’t far from mine in the alphabet, which meant that he sat close to me in a couple of classes. I could almost see him, and though I never knew him or exchanged a word with him, he had been in my mind all this time — and in the minds, I’m almost sure, of most of the 1,097 of us in the Harvard Class of 1942.

He died in 1973, which is too bad, because if he were still alive, maybe Roger would have called him and accidentally made him feel bad about going to business school and not even trying to be president.

• Then Leon Wieseltier revealed in the New Republic that the day after the election, he threw over his usual ponderous, academic, white-people hobbies in favor of doing spirited black-people things:

I woke up the next morning still under the spell of solidarity and love. I decided to make the spell last. I gave away my tickets to a performance of some late Shostakovich quartets, because for once I was not interested in the despair. Instead I spent the day listening to the Ebonys and the Chi-Lites and the Isley Brothers. For lunch I went to Georgia Brown's for fried green tomatoes.

Later on, emboldened by the new solidarity between the races and fueled by four Alizé and Cokes, he told a dude that his wife had a "damn fine booty." He can't remember what happened after that, though.

50 Cent Album Delayed Till Next Year

According to a press release, 50 Cent's new album will not be released in 2008 after all — apparently, it wasn't quite ready. And, as if that weren't bad enough, it's just been announced that every copy of Before I Self Destruct will come packaged with the movie of the same name, a movie, we'd like to remind you, that Curtis Jackson himself wrote, directed, and stars in. According to 50, "Times are hard … I want to give my fans something extra for their hard earned dollars." No, really, Curtis, that's okay — you keep it!

Laura Linney and Joan Didion Team Up for HBO Movie

We've given HBO a hard time lately (with good reason, mind you), but we should clarify: It's their non-Wire, non-Sopranos series we're mocking, not their original movies like Recount. So it was with great excitement that we read this on Variety's site a few minutes ago: "HBO is developing an untitled film about the life of Katharine Graham, who took the reins of the Washington Post and led the paper during the Watergate investigation that brought down the Nixon administration. Joan Didion is writing the script, and Laura Linney is circling the project to potentially play Graham." That's right, Didion and Linney. It's practically enough to make us forget John From Cincinnati. [Variety]

Maeve Binchy on ‘The Hard Core’ and Her Uplifting Next Novel About Heart Failure

For nearly three decades, Maeve Binchy’s novels and stories have portrayed the lives of average people in Ireland. They’ve garnered big sales, a cultish readership, and a number of acclaimed film adaptations, 1995’s Circle of Friends with Minnie Driver among them. But aside from the Oprah nod of approval, Binchy’s work has sparked little critical interest. Perhaps critics don’t know what to do with her — she reads something like an amalgam between Cecily von Ziegesar and Frank McCourt. This week, How About You?, the film adaptation of her short story "The Hard Core," opens starring the venerable quartet of Vanessa Redgrave, Joss Ackland, Brenda Fricker, and Imelda Staunton as four cranky codgers in a retirement home at Christmastime. Vulture spoke to Binchy one “cold, horrible fall morning in Ireland” about the new film, how she got her writing start from a kibbutz, and taking the money and running.

The Hard Core manages to be very dark and also curiously uplifting by the end.
It’s basically a Scrooge story. In Ireland and England we don’t have Thanksgiving, so people obsess over Christmastime. I wrote some short stories in the 1980s about how it’s up to us in life to make our own happiness. The Hard Core was a story about four cranky old people who made others’ lives miserable thanks to their unpleasantness. It’s one where people are suddenly transformed, an extension of my apostolic wish that everyone be happy.

Why are they all in the home?
We decided they were just dysfunctional: Their problem was not physical, but rather they were incapable of living a life of their own. I was going to have a part in the film, too. I was in Tara Road sitting in a bar, drinking a martini with my husband, Gordon. This time I was going to say, “I thought she was dead,” to Gordon when Vanessa Redgrave sings in the bar. But I was sick on the weekend when I was meant to be doing that so I missed my line. I was enraged. I would have gone mad if they had given the line to someone else. To my joy, they didn’t bother with it.

I’ve read you worked in a kibbutz.
In 1963, I worked in a Jewish school in Dublin, teaching French with an Irish accent to kids, primarily Lithuanians. The parents there gave me a trip to Israel as a present. I had no money, so I went and worked in a kibbutz — plucking chickens, picking oranges. My parents were very nervous; here I was going out to the Middle East by myself. I wrote to them regularly, telling them about the kibbutz. My father and mother sent my letters to a newspaper, which published them. So I thought, It’s not so hard to be a writer. Just write a letter home. After that, I started writing other travel articles.

The Ireland of today seems to be decidedly different from the Ireland that most of us used to hear about, the one reflected in literature and music.
Modern Ireland is a dramatically different place. It’s been a haven for people of lots of different nations — well, up until this financial crisis. And we became quite a rich country as a result of our joining the EU. We’ve become much more cosmopolitan, and the power of the church has been reduced. When I was young, everybody went to Mass because they were afraid. The people who go now go because they want to.

You announced a few years ago that you wouldn’t be going on any more book tours. Why?
I’m not able to walk very well. I can’t fly long distances. Book promotion involves a lot of going into shopping malls, getting in and out of airports. I told my publishers I wasn’t going to do any more books. That was met with a glum silence. I said, "I can’t go out to promote them; it seems wrong to take the money and run." They said, "You can take the money and run."

What’s next for you?
I’ve got a book coming out called Heart and Soul. It’s set in, of all places, a heart-failure clinic. But don’t worry; I assure you everybody does well at the end, and nobody is clutching their chests.

A Special Treat for ‘Twilight’ (and Hayley Williams) Obsessives!

It's okay, Hayley -- Twilight will be out November 21!

Big as they blew up last year — Riot went platinum — Tennessee pop-punkers Paramore are about to take things to another level with “Decode,” the Twilight soundtrack’s lead single. If the connection to the upcoming teen vampire flick — which is already precipitating stampedes — weren’t enough, the song itself suggests adorable flame-haired singer Hayley Williams might be bidding for Evanescence front woman Amy Lee’s spot as top rock-balladeer, goth division. And Williams, all soaring despair, just about pulls it off, too. In the end, though, we hope she hasn’t ceded all her lapsed-Christian spunk to such smoothly cinematic sounds.

First-Time Director Robert Davi on ‘The Dukes,’ Battling James Bond, and Meeting the Jonas Brothers

Robert Davi is usually playing a villain, and he’s got a face that suggests he won’t have any trouble feeding you to a man-eating shark (as he did to Felix Leiter in the James Bond film License to Kill). Fans who’ve seen him in so many action-oriented films and shows (Die Hard and Profiler among them) might find it surprising that for his directorial debut, The Dukes, which opens tonight, Davi has chosen to make a touching comedy-drama about a group of has-been doo-wop singers plotting a heist. Less Raw Deal and more Big Deal on Madonna Street, the film, which co-stars Chazz Palminteri and Peter Bogdanovich, is a tribute to the sensitively drawn Italian comedies the Queens-born Davi grew up watching. Davi and Vulture visited Papaya King this week.

So, we totally saw you two days ago standing by a hot-dog vendor, and all sorts of passersby had their pictures taken with you.
I was getting a pretzel. When I come to New York, I go to Little Italy, I go to the Bronx. I get some good Italian food. I get a cannoli. I get a hot dog and a pretzel. But the thing about a pretzel is, it has to be burnt. So I was actually waiting for the hot-dog vendor to burn my pretzel. He told me, “You gotta wait five minutes.” And as I was waiting there, people started to recognize me. So we started posing for pictures. I appreciate that. It started to get a little out of control, but I don’t like being rude to people, so I went with it. One time, I lost my seven-and-a-half-year-old son at a celebrity event in Puerto Rico. I thought he was drowning. I was rushing around, and I asked someone if they knew where the lifeguard was. They didn’t know, but then they tried to strike up a conversation with me. I was in a panic, and I was kind of terse to them. Next thing I know, I’m reading a blog post about how rude I was at this event.

You’ve been in so many movies and shows. What film do most people recognize you from?
It’s a whole variety of things. Definitely The Goonies, License to Kill, Profiler, Die Hard, Showgirls. I did a music video with the Jonas Brothers recently. They recognize me from that.

You did a Jonas Brothers video?!
They were terrific. They’re very sweet, very respectful kids. David Carradine and I did cameos in this video for them. Each one of them had their own fantasy. One wanted to be James Bond, so that was the hook for me. They were fans of The Goonies, too. I didn’t realize the immensity of who they were at first. I was on the phone, and my agent said, “They want you to do a Jonas Brothers video.” And my kids and my wife were all going crazy: “Do it! You gotta do it!”

So now you’ve got your film, The Dukes, opening against a Bond movie.
Yeah. Once again: Bond defeats Bond villain! I was so bummed when I heard our date, but then I thought, What the heck.

Had you always wanted to direct?
Yes. I’d wanted to direct since I was a kid, even before I got into acting. I grew up with a real affection for Italian neorealism and for the commedia all’Italiana, and the work of people like De Sica, Rossellini, Fellini, Pietro Germi, Ettore Scola. Those were the first films I saw as a kid, many of them with my grandparents.

Where did the idea for the story come from?
Back in the day, when I was studying with Stella Adler, one of the things she had us do was go through the newspapers and collect stories to use later. I remember reading an article about steelworkers being laid off. I was a young guy, and I came from a blue-collar family. Then my dad was laid off from his job of 25 years. I was reading a book by Alvin Toffler called The Third Way, where he talked about going from an industrial age to a technological one. Then I was also hearing stories about these doo-wop guys who used to fill up Madison Square Garden but hit rough times in the seventies and eighties. I grew up listening to doo-wop, so that was interesting to me as well. And I thought about how the change in musical tastes was mirroring in some way the change in the workforce. These guys were getting left behind by a transforming society.

You’re an outspoken conservative, having done voice-overs for videos at the RNC Convention this year. Is Hollywood a tough place to be a conservative?
First of all, I should note that I certainly understand the emotion and importance of the moment we’re living in. And I thought Obama’s speech at the DNC was really powerful. I had my own Oprah moment watching that speech: If I had false eyelashes, mine would have fallen off, too. I am a conservative fiscally and in terms of the war on terror. I’m also pro-life, but I’m socially liberal on other issues. In Hollywood, you are something of a minority, and I think some people are afraid of being marginalized. But y’know, Sean Penn is a great actor; that he says he wants to go meet with Hugo Chavez shouldn’t color his performances for me. He’s still brilliant in Milk; he’s still a great director. In that same way, I hope people’s opinion of my work isn’t affected by my conservative point of view. So I do hope that we can put partisanship aside, especially now.

Richard Belzer Likes Wine With Balls

Name: Richard Belzer
Age: Guess?
Neighborhood: Riverside Park
Occupation: Actor, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, author of I Am Not a Cop!

Who’s your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Louis Armstrong because he was everything: new, vital, and daring, just like New York City.

What’s the best meal you’ve eaten in New York?
In the seventies when I was struggling, I ate the same thing every day at Big Nick’s Burger Joint on Broadway and 77th Street. A cottage-cheese omelette with tomatoes, French fries, rye toast, orange juice, and coffee. It was consistently the most satisfying meal I could possibly imagine.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
Try to remember my lines and marvel at those who can.

Would you still live here on a $35,000 salary?
A week?

What’s the last thing you saw on Broadway?
The 39 Steps, which was astoundingly inventive and funny.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Depending on their material.

What’s your drink?
Deep, dark, ballsy red wine.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
More often than you’d think, depending on the country I’m in.

What’s your favorite medication?
Heroin. Oops!

What’s hanging above your sofa?
Invisible guardian angels.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
$400.

When’s bedtime?
Whenever the pills kick in.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
New, because more families are together.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
He should put more balconies on his buildings.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
Leaving it.

Who is your mortal enemy?
Any ignorant human.

When’s the last time you drove a car?
Can’t remember, which isn’t a good sign, is it?

Who should be the next president?
Barack Obama again. [Ed: Yeah, we have to change this question. Suggestions in the comments!]

Times, Post or Daily News?
Like Sarah Palin, I read everything.

Where do you go to be alone?
The bathroom or France.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
Dare to live here, work hard, and follow your dreams!

The Irony of Naming the Triborough Bridge After RFK

The Triborough Bridge will be formally renamed for Robert F. Kennedy on November 19, after decades of advocacy by the slain New York senator’s family. But there’s no reason to think Kennedy, an environmentalist before his time, would have wanted his name associated with the notorious bottleneck site. "He believed, appropriately, that cars didn’t belong in New York," says Columbia historian Kenneth Jackson, who opposes the renaming. "And with the MTA facing a billion-dollar deficit, I think Bobby Kennedy would be calling for us to find ways to save the planet and run more buses and subways rather than spend money to change signage." As a senator, Kennedy pushed for mass-transit funding. "We need to substitute mass transportation for individual cars if we are to obtain a significant reduction in the amount of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon in the atmosphere," he said in 1967. Robert Kennedy Jr., a potential EPA chief in the Obama administration, admits the irony but says his dad would have appreciated the honor. And transit advocate Gene Russianoff sees a silver lining: "I think Kennedy would probably have appreciated that the revenue from the tolls paid by every car that goes over his bridge will go to subsidize mass transit."

Tom Ford’s Suit Skirts for Daniel Craig Are Very Swishy

Just hold your thumb up over the girl, close one eye, and squint.

Daniel Craig wears suits designed entirely by Tom Ford in the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. When costume designer Louise Frogley saw the Forbulous suits, she couldn't resist. "They're not clothes where you know where you can buy them, there's more mystery," she tells the AP. Yes. One must seek them out in Tom Ford stores or the 1,600-square-foot Tom Ford shop-in-shop in Bergdorf Goodman. Ford says he tried to dress Craig simply:

"By dressing him in a very simple way, it accentuates that it looks simple on the surface but it isn't. It's a metaphor for the perfect suit — the construction that goes into a good suit is a lot of hours of handiwork, but you shouldn't see any of that it the end result. It should look easy and natural and a part of you … I do design things that are more extravagant, but that wouldn't be right for Daniel Craig or Bond. Bond wears more of a uniform."

Ford's sartorial genius is not merely abstract. To put it concretely, the suits must be cut so that sexy Daniel Craig can run, jump, and blow things up while still looking dashing. Ford's suits have a "roomy skirt" — the part of a suit jacket hanging below the waist — that enables such maneuvers. Frogley recalls the skirts swirling when sexy Daniel Craig moved around a lot. The suits were also great — and this is coming from Frogley, not us — because they hid sexy Daniel Craig's physique (sorry — "sexy" just keeps slipping out). "You want to hide the muscles in a suit, otherwise he ends up looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger. You want to leave that as a wonderful surprise when he's wearing something else or less," she says. That's nice, Frogley, but there is only one shirtless Daniel Craig scene in Quantum of Solace, amounting to approximately five minutes of pec-gazing time. But why should Frogley care? She probably saw him shirtless in person every day.

AC/DC Savage Madison Square Garden With Panting Rock Fury

Remarkably, no one was injured in what was the worst New York City rail accident in decades.

Last night's AC/DC show at MSG began with the unveiling of a giant screen featuring a computer-animated train (number 666, of course!) that was chugging, presumably, toward the Garden. In the engine room, a schoolboy-outfitted devil was seduced by two ample-bosomed babes; they tied him up and threw the throttle full-speed ahead (why did they have to lick it, though? That was unnecessary), crashing head-on into the station as the lights went on and the band opened with, yes, “Rock and Roll Train” from their newest album, Black Ice. And the show only got better!

Counterintuitively enough, aging befits an outfit like AC/DC, who have always presented themselves as dark wizards of rock: These days, Angus Young actually looks like a dark wizard, balding on top but with shoulder-length hair and sagging skin. He took the stage in his classic outfit, which he stripped out of almost immediately to reveal a flat stomach that seemed unusual for a professionally dissipated 53-year-old man. It became clear almost immediately why his fitness is not an issue — he has not turned down the energy at all; every single trademark move that you either remember from seeing the band in its heyday or via concert footage on a pre-talking-head VH1 was present last night, and not in a rote, greatest-hits kind of way.

Young’s musical gimmick is switching abruptly and without warning from traditional, clean (if massively amplified — there were at least eighteen Marshall amps to supplement the Garden’s already-cranked PA system) blues soloing to furious Hendrix/Page shredding. The spontaneity of his charismatic moves matched the spontaneity of his playing. He finished the band’s set (pre-encore) by spending five minutes standing alone on top of a platform built over the drum set, hammering away with such speed and volume that his playing was essentially incomprehensible to mortal ears. This was utterly captivating.

AC/DC’s greatest achievement may be that it still draws a crowd that really is there to rock, and not just catch the hype coming through town or remember the old days. And indeed, the audience matched the band's enthusiasm during “T.N.T.” and “Hell’s Bells” (which opened with singer Brian Johnson swinging from what appeared to be an actual huge cast-iron bell suspended above the stage), creating a self-accelerating vortex of rock fury. When we saw the Rolling Stones a couple of years ago at the Garden, a 10-year-old fell asleep in the row behind us. A few bold (or irresponsible) parents had brought their offspring to the show last night, too, and needless to say, none of them fell asleep — we can fucking promise you that.

Versace, Christian Louboutin, Chanel, and More Slash Prices in U.S.

A luscious Loub.

Luxury companies including Chanel, Versace, Christian Louboutin, and Chloé are cutting prices on goods in the U.S. by 8 to 10 percent. HALLELUJAH. We were beginning to worry about those poor, poor Madison Avenue shoppers having to cut back (because Lord knows we're not buying this stuff). The dollar has joyously increased in value against the euro by 28 percent since April, enabling the cuts as luxury companies rake in more cash than they anticipated. Obviously they're hoping the cuts will inspire people to spend. Retailers are celebrating the move, and the CEO of Saks calls it "a Pyrrhic victory." However, luxury companies can't lower prices too much so as to maintain the "perception of a label's value." Because if one day the $750 Loubs were $650, we'd perceive that as His Loubness's assuming his customers take lunch at McDonald's these days.
