7 blind kids in a film about tap dancing titled Seven

It's probably the most audacious and noble idea ever used in an Indian film. Seven blind children trained to not just stand up on their feet but to also tap-dance to a triumphant finale! That one-time TV actor (he played a junkie aeons ago on Doordarshan's serial soap Subah) turned film director (he made a film Dhoondte Reh Jaoge with Naseer et al which was hardly seen), Kumar Bhatia has just completed a film called Seven about 7 blind children who learn tap- dancing. "It's an idea turned into a film that I lived and worked with for four years," says Bhatia who's now utterly consumed by the prospect of Seven finding a viable market for his film like those other notable films about challenged children Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black and Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par. "My film doesn't treat the children as physically challenged marginalized children. But as part of the mainstream. When the idea of training seven blind kids to tap-dance came to me, I decided I'd make it with kids who were really blind. I visited several schools hunting for my kids until I came to the 'Happy Home School For The Blind'. What I saw there changed my life. The children were so happy so well-adjusted to their routine and not at all defeated by their deficiency," says Bhatia. Out of all the wonderful kids that the director met, he chose Gaurav, Mukesh, Rahul, Sanjay, Pradeep, Saif and Shrikant. Two of them suffered a terminal illness. Reveals Bhatia, "So we had to exercize that extra bit of precaution with them. They're all between the ages of 6 and 10. All very bright and natural performers. The school was initially hesitant to let the kids undergo the grueling experience of facing the camera. But once my intentions were made clear, the kids became a part of my extended family." It took Kumar Bhatia a year to find the suitable children. "Then it took another year to teach them to tap- dance. By the end of our workshops the blind kids could 'see' every frame in every shot. They performed completely oblivious of their handicap." Besides the kids, Seven features an impressive cast comprising Lilette Dubey, K K Menon and Makrand Deshpande. Farooq Sheikh plays the narrator while Nauheed Cyrusi is the teacher who teaches the kids to tap-dance. The director himself plays a brief role. After living for four years with this unique project, Kumar Bhatia feels vindicated. "It has been a learning experience. And I hope Seven gets an audience that would appreciate all the effort that has gone into it."

'Who is the original writer of RGV's Rann?' - A new controversy in the making

April 2008, the famous Rakesh Roshan - Ram Sampat case. Rings a bell? Well, the plagiarism case which was settled out of court for Rs 2 crore got Mr. Roshan into quite a bit of trouble. Music composer Ram however minted for having slapped a copyright infringement case against Rakesh Roshan for having used his tunes in his film Krazzy 4. The producer director also confirmed to the media and the court that Ram Sampat allegedly chose a smart way to earn money out of him. Someone rightly said that creativity is great but plagiarism is faster. But imagine this happening the other way round. November 2008, and just like the above case, this one too seems to be heading to the court. And this time it's Ram Gopal Varma and Ms Sonal Mehta, a free lance journalist and an aspiring writer who is trying to fight out a long battle on who is the original story writer of Rann. To get the facts straight, we dug out some interesting information from reliable sources. As a filmmaker, RGV has over the past one and a half decade given credit to all his script and story writers, no doubt about it. Then who is Sonal Mehta and why is she trying to drag RGV to the court? Our sources have confirmed that Ms Mehta claims that the story of Rann was her concept and story. After hearing media reports about RGV's Rann, she is now trying to find her way back into the film. Shocked for not having found her name mentioned anywhere in the news or stories published about the film instigated her even more. Like many aspiring filmmakers and writers, Sonal too has worked with RGV in his previous films during his Factory days. All his hits and flops so far have been written by his appointed writers but the true originator of the idea of that particular film comes from RGV's brain. We also are aware of the fact that RGV is very particular about his deadlines. It is learnt that, likewise, Sonal too was given a certain D-day to develop the story of Rann forward but failed to catch up with the time limit, and knowing how the director works, she was told to opt out from the project. Rohit Banawlikar then took the task of writing the story of Rann. Now, RGV says that he has all the evidence to prove that Rann is not written by Ms. Sonal but by his writer Rohit Banawlikar. To add further, the script of Rann is registered with the Film Writers Association of India. Then what is the fuss all about? Well, we can only wait for the courts judgment to know wins this battle. As the Rann poster aptly says - Truth is Terrible, we only hope that this one gets its verdict before the films release.

Right from his directorial debut MY BROTHER NIKHIL to BAS EK PAL to his new outing SORRY BHAI [Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, Sanjay Suri, Sharman Joshi, Chitrangda], Onir has always opted for stories that defy the stereotype. SORRY BHAI has a bold story to tell as well and Onir narrates it with utmost sensitivity. When you've powerful names in the cast, expecting power-packed performances becomes mandatory. No wonder, SORRY BHAI boasts of superior performances, but the one who steals the show is Sharman Joshi, who's getting better and better with every film. He depicts the turmoil with such precision that it stays with you even after you've left the auditorium. SORRY BHAI charters a new path as far as its story is concerned and it would be interesting to see how the viewers of today take to this tale.

Arbaaz's new role as a Producer

Arbaaz Khan is all set for a new innings. The year 2008 has been a turning point in his career. After winning accolades for his performance in WOODSTOCK VILLA, JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA and now FASHION, Arbaaz is readying for a new role: Film producer! To start with, Arbaaz has already floated his film production concern called Arbaaz Khan Productions. His maiden venture, scripted-directed by Abhinav Kashyap [Anurag Kashyap's brother], will star elder brother Salman Khan in the lead. "Actually, Abhinav had approached me initially. He wanted me to act in his film. I decided to produce it instead," Arbaaz informs me. Was it easy getting Salman for the principal role? "Had he [Salman] disliked the script, he would've told me right away to work on something else. But he was floored when he heard the narration. He hasn't portrayed a role like this so far and was game for it instantly," Arbaaz divulges. The leading lady is under finalisation currently. "Either we go for a fresh face, who's supremely talented or we go for an established name, who's a powerful actress. We've yet to take a call on that. Will I act in the film? I might! I think I may settle for one of the key roles," Arbaaz says.

Abbas' wife Pakhi has penned the script of this romantic-comedy [she was the casting director of JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA]. John Abraham has already been signed for the lead role. Now here's the latest development! Pakhi, who has penned the script, will also play the leading lady opposite John in this film. "When Pakhi narrated the script to John, all of us felt that no one else would understand and relate to the role better than Pakhi. That's how all of us suggested that Pakhi should act in the film as well. She needed time to think about it. A few days later, she replied in the affirmative," Madhu Mantena informs me. Now that's a novel casting indeed, what say? 1-800-LOVE is expected to take off early next year!

"Sanjay Dutt's character of Sattar bhai is the USP of EMI" - Ashish Chowdhry

He started out playing the baddie in T.V. serial 'Hum Pardesi Ho Gaye' but when it came to films it's his comic act that has fetched him maximum appreciation. Be it his first film Qayamat or the recent laugh riot Dhamaal, Ashish Chowdhry has slowly but surely made his mark as an actor who can bring a smile on your face. The good looking actor is now awaiting the release of EMI where he plays an average middle class guy who gets stuck in the vicious cycle of taking loans and repayment. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ashish speaks about his experience of working on EMI, his future films and much more. After the laugh riot Dhamaal, you are back with yet another multi-starrer EMI. How does it feel? It feels superb especially because this one is also with Mr.Dutt. Sanju Sir is one person whom I have tremendous respect for, not just as an actor but also as a person. I have always been impressed with the way he has tackled the issues he has faced in his professional and personal life. Besides, he also seems like a lucky charm for me because my first film with him (Dhamaal) was a hit. So I'm hoping the same with this one as well. Sanju Sir seems like a lucky charm for me because my first film with him (Dhamaal) was a hit. So I'm hoping the same with this one as well. So what is EMI all about? Is it a comedy, a drama or a satire on our society? EMI is a very realistic kind of a film because the issue, which we have picked up in this film is realistic. 90% of the earning population of India knows what EMI means, what loans are, what its benefits, its advantages / disadvantages are. 80% of them are already taking loams for one thing or the other. Then you have around 20% of the population who are defaulters and what we have highlighted in this film is the recovery system used in our country to get back money from these defaulters. So you have goons hired by the banks to settle scores with the defaulters. All this makes for interesting viewing. Moreover I must add that the situations depicted in this film are very relevant in today's times when the markets are at an all time low and the fear of recession is looming large. So yes people should go and watch EMI...It is both entertaining and has a point to make. What we have highlighted in this film is the recovery system used in our country to get back money from these defaulters. Sanjay Dutt seems to be the central character in the film. What's his role and how was it working with him again after Dhamaal? Sanjay Sir's character Sattar bhai is the USP of this film. He plays this light-hearted goon who is responsible for recovering money from defaulters. The funniest part is the way he recovers money from the various defaulters. His character in this film reminded me so much of Munnabhai not in terms of characterization but in terms of likeability of the character. Mr. Dutt has been someone whom I have been in awe of ever since I was a kid. During my college days, a lot of people told me that I look like Sanjay Dutt (of Rocky days) and it felt really good. I didn't know him much before Dhamaal but during the film I realized that he is so normal, so humble and very child-like. Despite all the troubles that he was going through during the shooting of Dhamaal, he kept a calm and composed demeanor which is amazing. There is so much to learn from him not just about acting but about living life in general. What is your character in the film and what does he take a loan for? I play this middle-class guy called Anil. He is a guy who has come from outside Mumbai and works as a junior level accountant in a small time garment firm. Initially he starts taking loans for himself but later on falls in love with a Mumbai girl. After marriage his loans double and before you know it, he has already taken a loan for his marriage, his honeymoon, a laptop, a car and all the other things that a Mumbai girl would ask for. The frustrations the character faces when he is unable to payback the loans and his encounter with Sattar bhai make for some really interesting and funny situations. I play this middle-class guy called Anil. He is a guy who has come from outside Mumbai and works as a junior level accountant in a small time garment firm. How easy or difficult was it to get into the skin of the character? In most of my films, I have played this loud, over-the-top, comic character and hence it was a dream come true for me to play just an average common man. I realized its not easy playing a common man because your reactions have to be real. Even my look is that of your average middle-class guy. So yes, in many ways this has been the most difficult and challenging role of my career so far. On a personal level, what do you think of EMI as a concept? Do you believe in taking loans or do you prefer making cash down payments? I think it has become quite a worldwide phenomenon today but now that the market is crashing, people prefer to pay cash down. Technically, I'm very pro-loan. I think there is no harm in taking a loan but when it comes to loans, I always remember the saying, "Jitni badhi chadhar utna hi pair failao". For me taking a loan is also connected to my success in life. If I didn't take the loans that I have taken in my life, I wouldn't have worked hard enough to pay the EMI's. Whether they realize it or not, maximum people take loans and there is no harm in it as long as you know your limits. This film is yet another multi-starrer. Do you think you will get noticed amidst a galaxy of stars like Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Urmila Matondkar and Malaika Arora Khan? See...when the script came to me, I was very thoughtful and it was one script that made me scratch my head. I said "Wow they are planning to make a film based on this topic!!!" Even though I was a bit apprehensive at first about the concept, the fact that the film was being backed by 4 Top production houses (Popcorn Motion Pictures, Balaji Films, Sahara One Motion Pictures and T-Series) increased my belief in this project. Besides, when I saw the actors involved in this project, I decided that I do want to be part of this film considering it's an A-grade multi-starrer. Besides I love doing multi-starrers as it gives me a great opportunity to learn and interact with much more seasoned actors. I have made some of my best friends doing multi-starrers, How has it been working with actors like Urmila Matondkar, Malaika Arora Khan and Arjun Rampal? Urmila and I have done Speed before this. We both have pugs so that was a common topic for discussion (laughs). It was great bonding with her once again on this film. I really admire her as an actress. Malaika is like family because the entire Khan family has been extremely supportive and encouraging towards me. I feel proud that Malaika is doing her first full-fledged role as an actress in EMI. The only person new to me was Arjun. When I first met him, he was going through a phase where that one big hit was missing in his career. But now, after OSO and Rock On, Arjun is a name to reckon with. I have always believed that he is the best looking actor we have in the industry but now I am happy that he has even come of his own as an actor. Today even his presence is a big plus point for the film. Also last but not the least, I must mention that even Neha Uberoi who plays my wife in the film has done a really commendable job considering the fact that she is just a couple of films old. When I first met Arjun, he was going through a phase where that one big hit was missing in his career. But now after OSO and Rock On, Arjun is a name to reckon with. EMI is director Saurabh Kabra's debut film. How was it working with him? I have a connection with Saurabh as he also comes from an advertising background. In fact like me, he too runs an ad agency, so there was so much more to discuss when we first met other than the script. He's a young guy, almost the same age as me so our wavelengths matched in more ways than one. Being an ad filmmaker he brought in a different, unique style of filmmaking which was really exciting. We really clicked very well and in fact we are even discussing the possibility of working together again. Coming back to your career, you have been mostly appreciated in comic flicks. Is it something which comes naturally to you? Are you planning to stick to comedy or do you want to experiment with other genres as well? Actually it's quite funny because if you recollect I started out playing a negative character in my serial 'Hum Pardesi Ho Gaye'. In fact I even got a lot of nominations for that character of mine. In Qayamat, my character was on the lines of Nicolas Cage's character in The Rock, though I bought in my own nuances. Once that clicked, I kind of started getting more of such funny guy roles and suddenly I was termed as a good comic actor. In fact in Speed, I played a negative character but unfortunately that film didn't work at the B.O. Nevertheless, I am going to play diverse roles in the future but at the same time I feel that when the audience has accepted you in a particular genre, there is no reason why you should stop doing it. I am not going to be one of those actors who turns around and says "I am not going to do any more comedy films." After EMI, there is Indra Kumar's Daddy Cool which should be out sometime in December this year. It is the first dark comedy after Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron After EMI, what are the other films which you are doing? After EMI, there is Indra Kumar's Daddy Cool which should be out sometime in December this year. I am very positive about Daddy Cool after the success of Dhamaal. It is the first dark comedy after Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and that was one of the prime reasons for me okaying this film. It's based on one evening funeral where I and my older brother (played by Suneil Shetty) have lost our father. The chaotic situations that take place will literally bring the house down. Post Daddy Cool, I have Ravi Chopra's Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai which should be releasing in January next year. It was a dream come true for me to work for a banner like B.R. Films and moreover it has an ensemble cast comprising of Govinda, Lara Dutta and Tabu. Then there is Mukta Arts' Paying Guests, yet another light-hearted comedy directed by Paritosh Painter. The film stars Shreyas Talpade, Vatsal Sheth, Javed Jaffrey and it's about boys struggling to get accommodation in Bangkok and all the funny things they do to get accommodation. So all these films are ready for release and over the next 3 months, I will have a release almost every other month. Have you signed any new films besides the above mentioned ones? Yes I have ...there is UTV's Seasons Greetings starring Sohail Khan, Shreyas Talpade, Vatsal Sheth, Tabu, Nandana Sen and Javed Jaffrey (once again). In December, I start shooting for Vikram Bhatt's Purple Lake in Yorkshire. It's my first so-called solo film and is directed by one of Vikram's chief assistants Vishal. It's a mystery thriller on the lines of Vikram Bhatt's films such as Raaz, Kasoor etc. After that I take a short break in January as my wife Samita is due for delivery and post that I start work for Kya Fool Hai Hum. Is it a sequel to the smash hit Kya Kool Hai Hum? No its not...it's produced by Sangeeth Sivan and Sanjay Ahluwalia. They have got this as the working title. The film stars Govinda, Sohail Khan & Javed Jaffrey and is directed by Ajay Chandok. It's a real coincidence that barring EMI, Javed Jaffrey is there in almost all the movies that I am doing. I am sure we'll also be seen in Double Dhamaal (the sequel of Dhamaal) Lots to look forward to in the coming months; finally give us 3 good reasons to watch EMI this week? 1. The concept is something which has not been attempted before anywhere. Moreover with the current market scenario, the issue the film tries to touch upon seems all the more topical. 2. You have to watch out for Sanjay Dutt as Sattar Bhai because I truly believe nobody plays a bhai as well as Sanju Sir 3. And finally, for the kind of people backing this project (namely Popcorn Motion Pictures, Balaji Films, Sahara One Motion Pictures and T-Series).

Post the success of Fashion, Bhandarkars visit Vaishno Devi

With Fashion resulting in mega bucks at the end of an extended first week and marching on a positive note in the second weekend too, Madhur Bhandarkar is finally relaxing. After a year of non-stop working on the film, schedule hassles, early release of the film, competition with Golmaal Returns and sleepless nights, Madhur Bhandarkar finally saw his labor of love, Fashion, turning out to be the biggest money spinner of his career so far. In fact, the first week collections of Fashion are higher than total collections of his biggest earner till date, Corporate, which pretty much tells the tale. Now before starting work on his next project, he decided to visit 'Mata Ka Darbar' in Vaishno Devi. "I am thankful to God. He has always been kind to me. Ab itna to banta hai ki picture ki success ke baad main darshan ke liye zaroor jaaon (Now after the film's success, the least I can do is to go and take God's blessings)", said Madhur Bhandarkar before heading for Vaishno Devi yesterday. His wife Renu too accompanied him for Vaishno Devi. Before leaving for Vaishno Devi, Madhur Bhandarkar also made it a point to host the success party of Fashion in New Delhi on Saturday night. The party wasn't meant to be yet another filmy affair but was attended by the usual Page 3 attendees of the Delhi party circle. Madhur was accompanied by wife Renu who acted as a perfect host while filmmaker Ashok Pandit too accompanied him for the event. "Once I come back to Mumbai, it would be business as usual. I have to now see how far Fashion goes from here. The film has done excellently well in its first week and I am closely watching second week collections now. Since it has been produced by me as well (along with UTV), it is quite special. Exhibitors have kept their faith in the project by retaining a very good number of shows in the second week as well. Although a few people thought that length of the film was an issue, that didn't seem to be a problem with audience or exhibitors. I am glad the film has been accepted the way I had envisaged", signs off Madhur.

"We can't understand why Bipasha left the shoot suddenly" - Bunty Walia

'Chaotic' is how producer Bunty Walia describes the situation at Kashmir after Bipasha's abrupt departure on Saturday, just hours before Sanjay Dutt landed in Srinagar to start shooting with her. On Sunday the cast and crew of Lamhaa seemed crushed by the latest blow. "They don't know what hit them. The morale in our unit is pretty low. Sanjay Dutt who landed here to start work immediately is suddenly at a loose end. He's taking an impromptu holiday right now," informed producer Bunty Walia. The unit now plans to move to Manali from Srinagar where the topography is similar, though not the same. "We're going to shoot only the action scenes there," informs director Rahul Dholakia. "We don't know what happened with Bipasha because she has told us nothing. She seemed fine in the morning. Suddenly we heard she had left. I suppose a film on the making of Lamhaa would be as interesting as the film itself, though we've no footage of Bipasha leaving Srinagar." Happily there's no bitterness about her abrupt departure. Says Walia, "We can't understand what happened, and why she left suddenly when Friday onwards things were going smoothly. I also can't understand how she managed to get back to the hotel from the location in Anant Naag, pack all her luggage and leave in fifteen minutes. But we're sure she had her reasons. And we're fully convinced she'll join us in Manali where we're now going to shoot the action scenes." The unit also plans return to Srinagar from 4th January to 11th January to shoot vital scenes after the main shooting happens on a sets in Film City in Mumbai. "I'm sure Bipasha would return to Srinagar in January and complete the unfinished work," Bunty Walia ends hopefully. In the meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt left for Delhi and will be proceeding to shoot in Manali on 12th November.

Check out Sanjay Dutt's new lean mean dapper look in Lamhaa

Though producer Bunty Walia has decided to shoot Lamhaa on a set representing Kashmir at Film City, he must shoot at least briefly with Sanjay Dutt in the Valley. "It's unavoidable. Sanjay plays a military intelligence officer who is a law unto himself in the Valley. Sanju's character is the kind of guy who can do anything. But he doesn't go into the grey zone. We needed a very special look for Sanju. Something that would make him look casual yet professional. A look he has never sported before." The first thing Sanjay was required to do was grow a thick beard. "Sanju has also coloured his hair. Sanjay has never done this before," says pal and producer Bunty Walia. "He has never cultivated any kind of special look for a role. When he had played a police officer in Mission Kashmir, he had used a moustache for the first time." Bollywood's numero uno designer for men, Shabina Khan, has been roped in to do Sanjay's look. Shabina Khan is very excited about Sanjay Dutt's new look. "He's come back from his holiday looking so slim and what a stride! Of course his waistline isn't like Sylvester Stallone's. At 63, that guy has a 32- inch waist. I know because I dressed him up for Sajid Nadiadwala's Kambakth Ishq. Sanjay Dutt has come back with a 35-inch waist. He has grown a salt-and-pepper beard. And I've coloured his hair salt-and-pepper for Lamhaa." Shabina went shopping for Dutt's clothes in New York. "I shopped for him for three days in NY. Every shirt, trousers, jeans, boots, shoes belt, watches and accessory he wears in Lamhaa has been purchased by me in New York. I shopped until Bunty's bank balance dropped. Budget? Bunty never counts pennies." Shabina feels Dutt has never paid attention to his looks and clothes. "I had done some films with him in the past. Then I got involved with the clothes of Salman and his family. Then there was a 4-year period when I was out of work. It was Bebo (Kareena) who introduced me to Shahid. And my new phase began. I feel changing Sanjay's look was a big challenge. I love it. He's a Greek God in person."
