Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 7 Nov 2008 | 8:13 pm Subhash K. Jha speaks about Ek Vivaah Aisa BhiNobility as a quality in cinema seems almost the hallmark of Sooraj Barjatya's cinema. Especially during these times of stress, cynicism and violence, any film that doesn't belch out venomous fumes is worthy of applause. But wait. Before we cheer Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi for walking the straight and narrow road, let's be warned. The route taken by the narration looks like a poor, tame, tepid and technically shoddy facsimile of Anil Ganguly's Tapasya (which was produced by Barjatya) and more recently, the Barjatya-directed Vivaah which won extra points for its elegant and fluent simplicity of narration. Director Kaushuk Ghatak takes us through Barjatya's joint-family system. Yes, even the infamous gaajar ka halwa makes its mouth-watering appearance somewhere at the start during the first wedding that rolls our well-'read' Barjatya carpet at the start. Yup, the film begins and ends with elaborate weddings replete with the whole cast plus sundry junior artistes dressed in garish pinks, mauves and greens prancing to the sound of festivities. But somewhere this prolonged music-video 'Vivaah' lacks the graceful zing of the other Shahid Kapoor-Amrita Rao film, released two years ago, which had enough meals and morning walks to make our digestive system feel balanced- out. Ek Vivaah.... is lopsided in its fervent festivity. The first-half where a romance grows between two small-town singers Sonu Sood and Eesha Koppikhar groans and creaks with monotonous semi-classical songs. The music (Ravindra Jain) is simply awful. Jain had done the songs and music in the original film Tapasya. One still remembers Kishore Kumar's theme song 'Jo Raah Chuni Tuney' with goosebumpy affection. The songs and music in Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi are dreadfully dull. The film gets by on the strength of Bengali litterateur Ashapurna Devi's powerful story of a self-willed woman who sacrifices marriage to look after her siblings. Parts of the second-half capture the emotional aroma of the original story. Especially effective is the relationship between the spinster and her devoted soul mate who refuses to marry any other girl. Suchitra Sen and Ashok Kumar shared a similar platonic rapport in Asit Sen's Mamta. And so did Raakhee Gulzar and Parikshat Sahni in Tapasya. They had the spirit. Eesha Koppikhar and Sonu Sood are sincere. But they lack the gravity and ingrained wisdom and dignity required to portray lives that go beyond self-interest. What works for this Vivaah is its intrinsic integrity. At a time when everyone is making films that either go for the guffaw or head for the libido, here's a film that tackles very basic traditional values and the feelings underlining the colourful festivities related to the Hindu wedding. The language is often so old fashioned that it borders on the archaic. But at least nobody is acting over-smart.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 7 Nov 2008 | 7:10 pm "The simplicity of Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is its USP" - Kaushik GhatakNot many directors get a chance to direct their first film for a really reputed and well-known production house. However, debutant director Kaushik Ghatak is an exception as he has just directed his first film Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi for Rajshri Productions Pvt. Ltd. Having started his career in the television industry and directed numerous soaps, Kaushik is now excited as it has always been his dream to direct films. This soft-spoken to director opened up to Bollywood Hungama and shared his experiences on working with one of the country's oldest and most reputed production houses. How do you feel getting a chance to debut with a banner like Rajshri? It's an honor for any director to work with Rajshri Productions. After working with them, I have realized that Rajshri is not just a big production house but an institution in itself. I have learnt so much from them about filmmaking that I will remember and make use of it throughout my life. In-spite of being such a reputed production house that has made so many hit films, the people at Rajshri are so down to earth. They treated me so well that I never felt that I'm a new comer. It was like working in a family environment and an extremely pleasant experience. It's an honor for any director to work with Rajshri Productions. After working with them, I have realized that Rajshri is not just a big production house but an institution in itself. How did films happen to you? I started with still photography and then I did small course from AAFT Noida. After that I came to Bombay and got an opportunity to work in the television industry. Professionally speaking, whatever I'm today is all because of Kyunki..Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. People noticed my talent and realized that I could direct. After that I directed many shows such as Sanjeevani, Woh Rahne Wali Mahlon Kki, and Pyar Ke Do Naam - Ek Radha Ek Shyam. By the grace of God, most of them were successful. Television gave me lot of popularity but deep down I always knew that I want to make a film. Professionally speaking whatever I'm today is all because of Kyunki..Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. People noticed my talent and realized that I could direct. The film's lead actor Sonu Sood's name in the film is 'Prem'. Over the years 'Prem' has been a name synonymous with most of Rajshri actors be it Salman Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan or even Shahid Kapoor. Is that why you stuck to Prem even in Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi? When we were thinking about the name of the main protagonist a lot of options did cross our mind but then we thought why not stick to 'Prem' which has always been popular in Rajshri Films. I told Soorajji that Prem's copyright is with you and if you give me the right to use it in this film, I will be more than happy. He willingly agreed and I am honored to have the main protagonist's name as 'Prem'. Let me make it clear that my film is not a sequel to Vivaah. It's a completely different story altogether. We chose the title as Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi because the name is apt for the film. With a title like Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi, one gets the feeling that it is a sequel to Rajshri's earlier hit Vivaah. Is it so? Let me make it clear that my film is not a sequel to Vivaah. It's a completely different story altogether. We chose the title as Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi because the name is apt for the film. It's a story of these two characters Prem and Chandni who are never together physically, they have never even touched each other yet they live in each other's hearts completely. It's a story of togetherness. Finally what is the USP of Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi? The simplicity of the film is its USP. It's a very simple narrated story to which any ordinary human being can easily relate with.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 7 Nov 2008 | 4:53 pm "EMI gave me the opportunity I was waiting for, to do a light role" - Arjun RampalIt was as natural as rain, as predictable as the entertainment taxes that, one day Arjun Rampal would win over his audiences. What was surprising was that when it happened, in 2006, after the release of Don, came an award winning performance in 2007 - Om Shanti Om. Come September 2008, Rock On created a stampede and he is busy making space on his shelf for some more trophies for the next year. Over the last 7 years, Rampal had delivered a series of usually small and sometimes big but almost always scene-stealing performances. Remember the Deewanapan of Suraj Saxena? The blind Arjun Verma of Aankhen who robs the bank? A tattooed and shameless Ek Ajnabee who back stabs his colonel? All Rampal, all brilliant. The lead roles were few and far between, the financial imperative unfortunately dictating that acting matters. So, when given the chance, Rampal really pulled out the stops by pulling out his guitar and giving his best ever performance in Rock On. Rampal was clearly among the very best. Maybe he was the best. For an actor who once feared Fridays is now fearless, and is getting ready for his next multi-starrer hitting cinemas this Friday, EMI. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel caught hold of the very busy Arjun Rampal in a light mood where he struggled with time but not his answers, in this five minute exclusive. Well, success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it. From a rock star guitarist to playing a DJ in EMI. Music in flowing in your blood it seems? (laughs) You said it bro. Actually, I started doing EMI before I signed Rock On. I even finished shooting EMI before Rock On. But unfortunately it's releasing a bit late. Yes, both are musically inclined films that have come to me. I am turning into a music lover slowly. EMI gave me the opportunity I was waiting for, to do a light role EMI is a light humorous entertainer. We haven't seen you in a comic avatar before. It's all the serious roles I've been doing of late. Be it Ek Ajnabee, Rock On, The Last Lear, and now EMI gave me the opportunity I was waiting for, to do a light role. Also, I was missing the song and dance routine (laughs). You will see me shake a leg after the stupendous success of my last hit number 'Stranger' from Ek Ajnabee. Do you love dancing? I do shake a leg sometimes. In Bollywood you have to learn the A to Z. There is no way out or you'll be termed as a stereo-type. And when you're playing a DJ or a Rockstar, you need to dance anyway. The film is a light hearted take on the credit card scenario EMI also comes at the time when the world is going through the credit crunch scenario. Yes, EMI is coming at the time when our economy is in a mess and the banks are in a bigger mess. But the film is a light hearted take on the credit card scenario here (laughs). People will have a laugh and much to think about and learn too from EMI. Heard you play a catholic once again. What a coincidence? It's a sweet coincidence. I bet the catholic community is already falling in love with me (laughs). I play this character called Ryan Briganza who is a DJ. Like most young ambitious people, he wants all the good things in life and is always in debt and trouble but he manages to find his way out of trouble. It's an interesting role for me plus all the four stories in the film run parallel to each other and yet interconnect with them. Ryan Briganza fights the ongoing battle to pay his loan on time like all the others do in the film and then in walks Sattarbhai to help them out. There is a sweet message at the end of the film which people will take home. This is your first film with Sanjay Dutt. How was the tough experience? It wasn't a tough experience but if you've used a pun, then he is a tough guy. I've known Sanju for a long time now but haven't had a chance of doing a film together. He is a very warm person and a talented actor. He is an easy going guy. There is no one who could've played Sattarbhai besides him. I don't believe that an actor has a shelf life. Today I am successful only because I've never given up and have always focused on acting rather than modeling There are two current actresses who have a crush on you. What are you saying? I do not agree with it but I do agree some of them have had a crush on me while they were in their school or college. I'd like to know their names anyway. One is Deepika Padukone and the other is Mugdha Godse, who recently delivered a stunning performance in Fashion. Good to know that. But I think Meher is lucky (laughs). I think you'll have to ask the two pretty ladies why they've had a crush on me so that I can make some kind of a comment. I can't be that lucky (comments). You're 37 now. Don't you think you've got success a bit late? Not at all. I was a well known model before and the entire country is aware of that fact. So Arjun Rampal was a successful model but as far as films are concerned, yes, initially some of my films didn't work at the box office and it's only after Om Shanti Om that I felt so close to success that I could touch it. Rock On just doubled it up. My fan following has gone up too. Suddenly, Arjun is the talk of the town and I am happy. Better late than never. I don't believe that an actor has a shelf life. Today I am successful only because I've never given up and have always focused on acting rather than modelling. Your debut film Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat had Suneil Shetty as one of your co-stars. You're working with him again but this time he is a producer. How was the equation? We added up well (laughs). He is a great host as we all know. Actually, Suneil Shetty is one of the most helpful people within the Indian Film Industry today. He is always the first one there to help anybody. As a producer, he is that much more caring and is a fantastic to work with on and off the sets. He is very thoughtful and takes each and every decision carefully. I hope EMI does well for him as a producer. Suneil Shetty is one of the most helpful people within the Indian Film Industry today. He is always the first one there to help anybody Rock On wasn't that well received in the overseas box office. Will EMI come as a welcome relief? I hope it does well in the overseas territory. I know that Rock On had to struggle knowing the theme of the film plus fresh new faces but EMI has a lot of factors going with it. It's got me (laughs), Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Matondkar, Malaika Arora Khan and it's a Suneil Shetty film. What else do you need? In fact, the script is good too and plus it's a light hearted comedy. I've heard that comedy films work in the overseas. EMI will definitely be a success.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 7 Nov 2008 | 3:29 pm Is Oye Lucky!Lucky Oye! based on Delhi's famous Super-Chor Bunty?Click above for more movie stills The promos of UTV Motion Pictures' Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! have just hit the screens and by the looks of it, this one promises to be yet another light-hearted entertainer. The film starring Abhay Deol (as Lucky), Neetu Chandra and Paresh Rawal in lead roles is directed by Dibakar Banerjee (of Khosla Ka Ghosla fame). Like Dibakar's previous film, this one too is set in Delhi, however, it talks about Lucky, a lovable thief who even the Delhi police are extremely fond of. His modus operandi is to outsmart the people, chowkidars and policemen with his sharp mind and wit. He is an aspiring individual who loves good things in life and is generally enamored by the lifestyles of rich and affluent Delhi families. In fact, the buzz is that Lucky's character is inspired by real life thief- Super Chor Devender aka Bunty who is currently awaiting his trial in Delhi Central Jail. Bunty was famous for robbing not just money and jewellery but even items like Kashmiri carpets, crystal cutlery, antique clocks, golf sets, bottles of Scotch, and luxury watches like Rolex and Rado. We quizzed director Dibakar Banerjee on whether this is true? "Not really. Abhay's character, Lucky, is based on a composite of many small time thieves/ robbers/ criminals whom we have heard or read about in the news reports. The Super Chor could be one of them but it's not wholly and solely based on any one character. The character was developed on the basis of things I had seen around me during my growing up years .I have been living with this idea for a long time now. At the end of the day, it's a work of fiction based on all the research that I have done." One of the highlights of the film is Paresh Rawal who will be seen playing a triple role. "Yes, Pareshji is playing a triple role in the film. In fact one of his characters is that of a Wedding Band waalah who covertly also runs an auto-theft racket. The idea for this character came from a news report which I had read a while ago. That was the starting point and then I fleshed out the character in detail. So you take anecdotes, refer to events and then arrange it in a narrative which would be entertaining to watch. In a nutshell my film's premise is such that it makes for an excellent satire," signs off the talented director.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 Nov 2008 | 3:20 pm Celina floors rugby star Monty Beetham at her international film premiereViolently ill and shivering with the cold at the premiere of her first international film, Love Has No Language, in Auckland on Nov 5, Celina Jaitley rubbed shoulders with the creme de la creme of New Zealand. And that too in the pouring rain. "It was the grandest premiere I ever attended," gushes Celina. Days after the premiere she's in a daze. "800 Asians turned up to meet me besides the 325 formal invitees. We had the crème de la crème of New Zealand attending, including television film and sports personalities." Prominent in the sports section of attendees was New Zeland's rugby star Monty Beetham who was quite taken up with Celina. Apparently, his eyes trailed our Celina across the premiere venue. Laughs Celina, "I'm no stranger to male attention. Though I met Beetham only briefly, I believe he was quite taken up by what he called the Indian beauty. I was just floored by all the attention I got." Hours before the premiere, Celina wasn't sure if she would be able to attend. "I was down with this acute tummy infection. I was doubling up with cramps and pain. I really thought I wouldn't be able to attend. But at the last minute, I squeezed into my Manish Malhotra gown and dragged myself to the red carpet. The effort was worth it." The movie got a standing ovation. "Not only that, people stood in the pouring rain for autographs and pictures. I tried to oblige everyone. The New Zealanders are extremely warm. As I shook hands with them, the freezing cold melted away. Never mind my gown shrank into a mini-skirt." Celina cuts down all chances of a romance with her co-star. She describes her Love Has No Language co-star Ben Mitchell as scary and horrifying. "He scared the hell out of me with bugs and butterflies all the time. Believe it or not, I'm terrified of butterflies. And although the film is called Love Has No Language, I couldn't understand anything he said because of his Kiwi accent. Maybe because I wasn't really in love with him."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 7 Nov 2008 | 3:16 pm Bobby Deol's first look from DostanaWith each passing day, the buzz about Dharma Production's Dostana keeps on increasing. The film, which opens across cinema halls next Friday (Nov 14), is among the most anticipated movies of this year. The promos featuring the film's leading stars Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra having a blast in Miami have already caught on big time. Even the special number 'Shut Up and Bounce' featuring the stunning Shilpa Shetty is being much talked about. However, one person who has been missing from the promos so far is Bobby Deol who plays an important role in the film. So its not just two guys (John and AB Jr.) vying for Priyanka Chopra's attention but also Bobby Deol who has the hots for Piggy Chops.
