"No problems with Salman, Akshay" - Priyanka Chopra

Download image as wallpaper Priyanka Chopra is thrilled at the response to FASHION. "I haven't had the time to either mourn or enjoy the fruits when a film releases. I didn't get the time to mourn the failure of any of my films this year, since the moment one got released, I was into promoting the next, so on and so forth. But something in me died when LOVE STORY 2050 and DRONA flopped. I was heartbroken," Priyanka tells me. In a heart-to-heart conversation with this writer, Priyanka admits that FASHION has come as a breather. "I stand by my films. And it felt really nice when FASHION opened well. All of us had worked very, very hard on the film and it feels good when people react so warmly. Madhur [Bhandarkar] is the true hero of the film," she smiles. Though Priyanka has never courted controversies, there's talk that Salman and she don't get along, which explains the inordinate delay in the making of GOD TUSSI GREAT HO. "The film got delayed due to various factors. I wasn't the cause for its delay definitely... As for Salman not wanting to work with me, I have heard this from various people. But he has always been nice to me whenever we've met. I have no problems with him," Priyanka is forthright. What about Akshay Kumar? Will we see Akki and Priyanka teaming up again? After all, they've delivered several hits in the past. "I have no issues absolutely," she adds.

Sanju dubs for Salman

Post HANUMAN, a majority of animation films may've sunk at the box-office, but Karan Johar sounds least perturbed. He continues to feel that there is immense scope for animation movies in India. "Notwithstanding the recent setbacks, I strongly feel that animation films have tremendous scope in India," Karan tells me. He's gung-ho about KOOCHIE KOOCHIE HOTA HAI, the animation version of his hugely successful directorial debut KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI. And Karan has roped in the same stars of KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI to do voiceovers for KOOCHIE KOOCHIE HOTA HAI. "Shah Rukh, Kajol, Rani, Anupam Kher, even Sajid Khan and Ritesh Sidhwani have lent their voices for the film. I also made Simi Grewal dub for a character in the film," Karan divulges. What about Salman Khan? He was an integral part of KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI. Will he lend his voice for its animated version? "I've roped in Sanjay Dutt for it," he replies. Meanwhile, Karan is ready with his new film DOSTANA, directed by first-timer Tarun Mansukhani. First Nikhil Advani, then Soham Shah, now Tarun Mansukhani. Also Ayan Mukherjee [directing Ranbir - Konkona in WAKEUP SID]. Why this penchant for new directors? "New directors are brimming with ideas. They dare to tell innovative stories, they are ready to take risks, their confidence and energy is infectious... As for Tarun, he has been with me right from KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI onwards. Besides, he's an extremely capable professional," Karan states. Karan is ready to start work on his new film MY NAME IS KHAN, starring SRK and Kajol. "Please don't expect a candyfloss entertainer. It's not based on terrorism either. It's about a husband-wife couple, their love story... I can't divulge more at this juncture," he adds.

International Dyslexia Association applauds Taare Zameen Par

For this golden-touch man, it was first wide appreciation from India and now the world. We are indeed talking about Aamir 'The Perfectionist' Khan and his masterwork, Taare Zameen Par. In his blog, www.aamirkhan.com, he speaks about his 'date' on October 29, when he held a special screening of TZP in Seattle for the IDA (International Dyslexia Association). This was one mega event which was attended by more than 200 members who knew about Dyslexia and worked in the field of learning disabilities. And through this event, Aamir wanted to gauge the responses of the cinegoers from the foreign shores. The 'screening' ('DVD projection', to be precise) was in a conference room and not in a cinema hall. Much to the surprise of Aamir, the film got itself an absolutely thunderous standing ovation, no sooner the lights were switched on! Not just that, after the screening there were many tear-filled eyes in the audiences. All this simply made Aamir glad that IDA had chosen to screen TZP at their annual conference. The ironical moment of the evening was the eagerness of the audience to know when the film would release in the US. And when they were told that the film has already seen a US release, they all insisted that the film be re-released in theatres, this time for the mainstream American audiences. One of the important points that came out of the Q&A session was the request from the audience to dub the film in English when re-released in US, as they wanted their children to see the film, but were afraid that the smaller kids will not be able to read the subtitles. Aamir has taken keen interest into this matter with an assurance that 'at the very least, the DVD release in US can incorporate an English dubbed version'. Aamir ends his blog saying that he didn't get much sleep that night (October 29), and that this time, it was him and not Tom Hanks, who was sleepless in Seattle! Well Aamir, with TZP being a front-runner at the Oscars, your fans (including us) will be totally sleepless till the results are announced!

King Khan's king-size birthday celebration

'Baadshah of Bollywood', Shah Rukh Khan, celebrated his 43rd birthday in style yesterday (Nov 2nd). The celebrations started late Saturday night at his plush residence, Mannat, with a bash thrown in by wifey dearest, Gauri Khan, where the Who's Who of Bollywood made their presence felt. After partying all night long, SRK even came to his by-now-famous porch (dressed in a cool white shirt and sporting designer glares) to wave and greet his many fans who had queued up all day long just to catch one glimpse of their favorite superstar. Needless to say the fans went berserk on seeing King Khan. Later in the evening, SRK spent some time with the media who had gathered to celebrate his birthday. The members of the media were more than happy to ask him all questions ranging from his most cherished birthday gift to his role in the forthcoming YRF flick Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and must say, SRK answered each question with his trademark tongue-in-cheek style humor. Finally, it was time for all the members of the media to sing the Birthday song, as SRK cut his birthday cake and posed for the shutterbugs. Must say, this was yet another king- size birthday celebration for King Khan.

Yash Chopra inaugurates The Indian Film Festival at Abu Dhabi

The Indian Film Festival at Abu Dhabi got off to a glorious start yesterday. And who better to inaugurate the festival than the person who perhaps embodies Indian cinema better than anyone else - Mr. Yash Chopra. The inauguration ceremony kicked off with an address by H.H. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Higher Education & Scientific Research, Government of the United Arab Emirates. He was followed by Mr. Abdulla Al Salim Al Amri, Director of Culture & Art Institute, ADACH, and the Director of the Indian Film Festival and then H.E. Mr. Talmiz Ahmad, India's ambassador to the UAE. Rachel Dwyer, renowned scholar of Indian films and author of an acclaimed biography of Yash Chopra, then took the stage to introduce the legend. After her pithy and heartfelt introduction, Mr. Chopra took the stage to say a few words before formally inaugurating the festival. "The people of the UAE have always shown tremendous appreciation for Indian cinema," he said, "as have the many people of Indian origin who have found a welcoming home in the UAE. I am glad therefore that a festival of Indian film is being held here on such a big scale and I wish with all my heart that it gets bigger and bigger in the years to come." After his comments, the vote of thanks were read out by Mr. S.K. Nangia, First Secretary, Embassy of India, which was followed by the screening of the first film of the festival, Veer-Zaara, produced and directed by Yash Chopra himself. The Indian Film Festival at Abu Dhabi will run from the 2nd of November to the 11th of November 2008 and will showcase some of the most memorable works of Indian cinema from the recent past, as well as some works produced in the UAE itself.

"Now it's my turn to laugh" - Rohit Shetty

There were two things that almost happened simultaneously ever since Golmaal Returns hit the screens on Wednesday. While the film opened to almost full houses all over, the critics gave it thumbs down. The trend continued with every passing day till Sunday where the collections remained very good while reviews ranged between average to bad. Did this hurt the film? Well, as is the situation today - not at all. Golmaal Returns is busy earning mega bucks and no one but Rohit Shetty, the captain of the ship, is busy grinning from ear to ear. "Critics laughed at the film. Audience is laughing with the film. And now it's my turn to laugh along with the film's success", says the amused director who is clearly having fun with many people from media suddenly turning silent with the film's success. "Haan, ab sab chup ho gaye hain", jokes Rohit, "Though on paper it seems like an advantage to have a 5-day weekend, the fact is that eventually you have to stay strong on all the days. I am happy that even after a whopping initial that the film took between Wednesday to Friday, the film continued to do well on Saturday and Sunday as well." But what really made critics go hammers and tongs at the film? After all he had all along maintained that it was a nonsensical slapstick comedy? "Search me", says Rohit in a bemused tone, "I guess it was a herd mentality. Ek bola, sab saath ho liye! But seriously, so many of the reviewers too hardly come with any credibility whatsoever. There is so much that happens behind the scenes even when it comes to reviews and reviewers. There is no point name taking, especially when audience is clearly enjoying my film." Did he sense something like this happening to Golmaal Returns? Was that the reason he didn't even keep any pre-release screenings? "True, I wanted those who were interested in the film to come and watch it at theaters when it released on Wednesday. Why to unnecessarily expose your film to some harm even before its release? It's unwarranted", comments Rohit. Though quite a few reviews thought that the film carried below the belt humor, children seem to be thoroughly enjoying the outing. "Yup, that was indeed the target audience. I don't know why critics missed the point that Golmaal Returns was meant to be a slapstick comedy and there was nothing which was offensive for the children. In fact I had toned down the film so much just so that the film becomes suitable for the family audience." How exactly? "Well, Ajay Devgan-Celina Jaitley sequence on the yacht was supposed to be a seductive duet but I dropped the idea and made it a funny dance sequence with just background music in play. Censors gave the film a 'U' certificate, families are loving the film, children are laughing at the jokes but critics? Aaah, now what can I say", shurgs Rohit. Meanwhile the star of the show, Tusshar Kapoor, is sadly missing all the action as he is currently stationed in Cape Town. Cued to the reports trickling in around the success of the film, he wishes that he was in Mumbai to catch all the action. "Yeah man, wish I was there. I am continuing to get all the reviews and compliments and I am glad the film has been received so well. I was always confident about the film but then you never know how audience reacts to the film", says Tusshar who is all set to be bestowed with all the awards for the 'Best Actor in a Comic Role' when 2008 comes ending. "I wish, I wish", Tusshar says softly, "I am plain happy to have this success to my name. I now look forward to being in Mumbai with the cast, crew, my friends and family to enjoy this success. Maybe team 'Golmaal' would have a success party soon and I would fly over." Arshad Warsi is upset that he didn't have much to do in the film. "Forget it yaar, I have said what I had to say. If he feels betrayed then fine. He won't feature in Golmaal 3", signs off Rohit.

Vipul Shah, Akshay Kumar to team up again

While shooting London Dreams in London, Vipul quietly finished the script for his next film starring Akshay Kumar which he starts in February 2009 Says Vipul from Goa where he's holidaying with his family, "After doing Waqt, Namastey London and Singh Is Kinng, we had to do something that would take us into another zone. My next film with Akshay pushes the envelope even more. After that, there's the Singh Is Kinng sequel which I'd like Anees Bazmi to direct. But he's very busy. So it depends on him." Vipul has also signed a 2-film deal with 20th Century Fox who are entering the Bollywood market with Vipul. One of these films would be a big Special-Effects spectacle again featuring Akshay Kumar. "So you see, Akshay remains a constant. But like I said, I worked with Ajay and Salman for the first time. And I felt equally at home. So I'll be working with them again for sure." So where did all the rumours of a rift with Akshay come from? "Search me," Vipul laughs. "I was committed for this Goan holiday from long before. There was no way I could disappoint my sons. Akshay himself flew down from South Africa for just a day for his party and went back. So it was all done in a rush. Just because I don't attend his party, we've become enemies? What kind of logic is that? We've decided to have our own private Diwali bash as soon as he returns on November 11. We're also announcing the details of our next film together very shortly."
