"Hissss is the first heavy duty special effects film shot in India" - Jennifer Lynch

She is the daughter of four time Oscar nominee David Lynch and is making her first Bollywood film. I bet whoever is reading this must've raised their eye brows. Anyway, let's move on. You've seen Mallika Sherawat dressed as a nagin, but the person who is responsible for her role is this woman. She then roped in Irrfan Khan too in the film who plays a homicide detective. That's not all. The film has music by Anu Malik and is entirely shot in India. There's more. Since 1993 she has only written and directed Hollywood films out of which her first film, Boxing Helena, which was surrounded in controversy got her instant recognition. With the success of her new film, Surveillance, showcased at last year's Cannes Film Festival, she is now in for her toughest and the most challenging task of directing her first Indian film titled Hissss, to be released in May 2009. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel gets you this exclusive candid interview with the award winning director and finds out that whatever projects Jennifer Lynch undertakes in the years to come, she will surely find newer ways to fuse art and science in her luminous tales of hope and wonder. The rest as they say, will be Hisssstory! In my six years as a Bollywood columnist, I've managed to speak to anyone and everyone in the world of Bollywood. This is the first time I'm going to interview a Hollywood director. Is it me being lucky or Jennifer Lynch? (laughs) I think it's both of us being lucky only because of the fact that I get to talk to you about this which means that it's as real as I hope it is and the fact that you are interested in talking about it. I am super proud of the film and it's a win-win situation here. How did Mallika Sherawat come across as a Bollywood actress? I mean, was she poisonous? (laughs) She is easily one of the most accessible and beautiful woman I've met in my life. I am definitely putting her to the test in Hissss. I hope this film is incredibly challenging and fulfilling for her. Mallika is incredibly kind, smart and successful and you always think that such actors don't exist. But here was Mallika, who is a power house of talent and I am really excited about her role in the film. She is the Bollywood queen and has an incredible potential too. She is the next big thing in Bollywood. Mallika is the next big thing in Bollywood What brings you to Mumbai all the way to direct a Hindi film? What's amazing is the fact that Mumbai chose me. Govind Menon, the producer had heard of me through one of his friends. Govind was in Los Angeles looking for writers and directors for this project and his friend had seen a film of mine and told Govind to meet me. We met and four days later I was signed as a director. I was instantly in love with the 'The Legend of Nagin', the old title of the film. I had never been to India before and loved the idea of writing the modern day version of thousand year old snake myths and beliefs. I then came to India for research and I fell madly in love with India. So did you agree to do the film before reading the script? Yes, there was no story yet. The only thing which was ready was the title, 'The Legend of Nagin'. I was told that you don't mess with the cobra especially when she is mating or else she'll come after you. Then I was told that the cobra is also a goddess. From there on, I wanted to read the script, to which Govind said that it wasn't ready. Didn't such a story freak you out? In Christianity in America, a snake is meant to be a villain, a serpent. It's a dangerous thing, a demon. In India it's a goddess. I was thrilled with both, the Indian and the American idea, what purity is and what is good and what is bad. When I came to India and realised that apples were a delicacy, I thought that between a serpent and the apples, I had my garden of Eden reference. I just had an American villain now and my film. The only American in the film is the villain. How did you rope in Hollywood's best, Robert Kurtzman, the make-up and special effects specialist? He is very well known in Hollywood. He has worked with Quentin Tarantino and many famous Hollywood directors. Robert is a special effects genius and he fell in love with the snake because it's something that he hasn't yet worked on as far as special effects and make-up goes. The Americans have never seen such a snake and the Indians too haven't seen the nagin the way I've designed her. She is no longer a tiny snake. Once the woman becomes the snake, it's enormous. Robert loved the idea and wanted every effect in camera by keeping it as sensual as possible. Hissss is a sensual story and I had to add the sensuality element in the form of Mallika Sherawat. The Americans have never seen such a snake and the Indians too haven't seen the nagin the way I've designed her Why such a name? Why not go for a simpler title which people can understand and can relate to? It was called Nagin - The Snake Goddess. As a result of all the pre-publicity, the producers thought that people were concerned about nagin films as there were too many films made on such a subject in India. The producers wanted to appeal to the global audiences here and so did I. But I didn't want to drift away from the point that the film was about a nagin and that nagin had to remain in the subtitle or the byline as you say. I'll be happy with the sound she makes (Hissss) because it makes you ask a question. The title now is Hissss, the vengeance of nagin. It also makes me wonder. The response has been good so far. Irrfan Khan has worked with the likes of Angelina Jolie in The Mighty Heart. What made you cast him for Hissss? Yes, I am aware of this fact. Irrfan Khan always used to struck me whenever I thought of this film. His roles before had left a resonating echo in me and I saw that. What I looked for in the role which he is playing of a homicide detective was a man with a lovely marriage but also a bit of a skeptic. Miracles are happening and insanity is taking place and he is the one edge of the story that needs to be human but also needs to hold out on its belief so that he has a balance in the film. I just thought that he was the perfect strength to play the role. He blew my mind with the sensitivity and the strength he had in him as an actor. He blew my mind with the sensitivity and the strength he had in him as an actor How did Mr. Ram Gopal Varma land up on the sets of Hissss and did he show any interest of working with you in the near future? Yes, he expressed quite a lot of interest in being any part of the project he could and was over whelmed by the sets and the script and what was happening in front of him during his visit. He said that he'd never seen anything like it in India. The comments were incredibly flattering for me. He has come on the sets twice now and spent quite a lot of time interacting and observing the way the film was shot. It's nice to have a director like Ram Gopal Varma appreciate what you're doing. That was lovely. RGV was over whelmed by the sets and the script and what was happening in front of him during his visit Did you hear of Mr. Ram Gopal Varma before he came on your sets? I've heard of him through others. When you come to India you seem to hear about people who everybody adores and he is top on the list. So how's the entire journey of Hissss been so far? Was the road rocky or smooth? In the hindsight, everything is smooth and worthwhile. I'm a big fan of the saying - Nothing worth doing is easy. The journey so far has been incredibly tough yet trying and joyful. It's a totally different situation I'm being put into because there are so many 'firsts' in this film. It's the first new version of nagin, it's the first heavy duty special effects film shot in India, it's the first for a lot of things and that's a testament that when you're working on such grounds, it's never going to be easy. It's the first new version of nagin, it's the first heavy duty special effects film shot in India Do you get enough sleep then? (laughs) I try to. Everyday when I go to bed and wake up the next day, I feel unbelievably grateful that this is the film I'm really proud of and excited about. And I say this with great laughter and comedy that Hissss isn't easy (read - this isn't easy). Can I now say - Who said that only Anaconda's exists...meet the Nagin. Exactly. You're right. Wait till the Nagin comes out! Have you got any songs in the film? Yes we do. Anu Malik is the music director of Hissss. At one point, Anu wasn't sure what I wanted earlier and went back and forth a few times till he struck gold. I'm interested in touching today's audiences by reminding them of what has been great about Nagin films. Today we just shot a Holi song sequence and to see everybody dancing to it was really inspiring and satisfying. So Bollywood has finally accepted Jennifer? I hope so and that's what I'd like to hear.

Down the memory lane with Rehana Sultan

Her role as a scarlet woman in the '70s film Chetna shot her into stardom. Rehana Sultan was also part of the National award winner Dastak in which she matched her histrionic talent with Sanjeev Kumar. The actress reminisces about her career in films Career A resident of Allahabad, Sultan had just passed Xth class in 1967 when she joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Pune for a two-year acting course. "We at the FTII used to make short films by which we could all explore ourselves in our respective fields. I was part of a small film entitled Water In The Tap which Rajinder Singh Bedi happened to see. So impressed was he with the film and my acting that he approached me with an offer to do a role in Dastak that he planned to make. But since we were not allowed to do outside films while in the Institute, I couldn't accept his offer. He was prepared to wait." WhenRehana came over to Bombay after spassingout of the Institute, she contacted Bedi at the insistence of her would-be co-star Sanjeev Kumar. "When I called up Bedi, he asked me to come and meet him at 12 the next day. I started giggling instantly. Upon hearing me giggle, Bedi asked, "If not at 12, come at 12.15 or 12.30 but please do come." I knew he couldn't understand why I was laughing and I promptly agreed to go and meet him. Upon meeting him, he started looking at me carefully from top to bottom and after a while retorted, "If I am not mistaken, you had long hair that went down to your knees. How come you have shoulder-length hair now?" When I told him that I had deliberately cut my hair, he shot back saying, "My character needs the kind of hair you earlier had. You have put me in a loss, Now I have to make a wig." I was signed and we were to soon start shooting." In-between Rehana got an offer from B.R.Ishara. In fact it was photographer Rakesh who had suggested Ishara her name. "Initially after seeing my photograph, Ishara had rejected me by saying, "She is not heroine-material." Not to be outdone, Rakesh approached and requested me to go and meet Ishara. Upon asking him about the film, he said that it was bold story the subject of which had yet not been touched upon. I was a little skeptical and said 'No'". One fine day, Rehana got a call from Rakesh who told me that Ishara was to come to her house. I got afraid and hid myself in my neighbour's (landlady) house telling my housemaid to tell any visitor who comes that I wasn't at home. My eyes were glued on my door when I saw Ishara knocking my door and the maid-servant opening the door for him. When I asked my maid, through sign language, whether the visitor had gone away, she signed back that he was waiting. With a little courage, I went to my house and saw Ishara sitting on the sofa puffing away. After exchanging pleasantries, I sat down to hear the script. So engrossed was I with the script that I had tears in my eyes. A woman with a strong intuition, I immediately agreed to do the role". When Bedi came to know about the development, he got very angry and somehow wanted to avoid doing his film. "But I insisted on doing the film. Then there arose a time- problem. Since both the films were close to my heart, I didn't want to lose either. But my inclination was for Dastak. I vividly told Ishara that I would have to leave his sets once Bedi summoned me for the shoot. And Ishara also got annoyed". I found hope when Sanjeev Kumar's secretary Jamnadas asked me to go ahead with Chetna saying, "Twenty eight days will just pass off soon (Chetna was to be completed in that period). I will not give Bedi, Sanjeev's dates." he said. After 28 days of shooting for Chetna, I came back and the shooting of Dastak resumed. Naturally Chetna released ahead of Dastak. While Chetna created a sensation of sorts, Dastak went on to bag three National awards; one for Sanjeev Kumar, one for Madan Mohan and the third for Rehana "I was stunned when Sanjeev called and congratulated me. I thanked my stars for the honour." Some prominent films Haar Jeet, Savera, Maan Jaiye, Man Tera Tan Mera, Tanhai, Khotey Sikkey, Agent Vinod, Sajjo Rani , Bada Kabutar, Ooparwala Jaane, Tinku, Prem Parbat, Bandhan Kacche Dhaago Ka, Nawab Sahab, Deen Aur Imaan, Ek Ladki Badnam Si, Diya Aur Toofan, Aaj Ki Radha, Kissa Kursi Ka, Hum Rahe Na Hum, Sooraj Mukhi, Bedard, Rehnuma, Nirlaj, Suraj Bhi Tamashahi, Desh Shatru, Meri Kashti, Ham Rahe Na Hum- all Hindi. Putt Jatan De (Punjabi), Tushar Yatra Amarnath and Dashyu Ratnakar (Bengali). Favourite Directors "Of all the directors with whom I have worked for, I liked C.P.Dixit who had all the qualities of a good director. There was this intense scene in Haar Jeet in which Radha Saluja and I were enacting where I had to be in a rage. There was a big jug of water and I had to gulp down the water while the scene was on. While the camera was on, I was gulping down water in a normal way. "Cut" said Dixit. He came up to me and explained how a person gulps down water when he is angry. When the shot was retaken I was gulping down water in a faster pace. The other directors of whom I would like to make a special mention of are Ved Rahi and my husband B.R. Ishara. Favourite Artistes "I love all my co-artistes. But I would like to mention the name of Rajesh Khanna here. He had offered me roles on two earlier occasions, which I turned down. But when he offered me Tinku I couldn't refuse to the then-super hero. He is a very nice person whom I respect for his simplicity. I also love Shabana Azmi and Radha Saluja ( who is now in London)." Marriage "My father was a British-styled gentleman and Ishara saab was a barefoot artiste. Both of them were poles apart. When he came to know about our love-affair, daddy was shocked by the cultural difference. But with the passage of time, he slowly started liking his to-be son-in-law, though unfortunately we got married in 1984 when my father had passed away." Films today "Our films are changing for the better. There are short and sweet films. I enjoy films like Partner, Fanaa, Black, Wednesday! and all of Karan Johar films. Among the heroines ,I like Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta. Sadly, there is a dearth of good songs. But all of Mahesh Bhatt films have good music." Fling with television "Some years ago, I got an offer from ETV to do a Hindi serial directed by Chander Bahl which I readily accepted. But mid-way something happened and Bahl quit. The serial fell flat soon after and was stalled thereafter. Later on, I got several offers but honestly, all serials look the same. None of them have content and they are dramatised and prolonged. Hence I rejected them all." Future course "I am tired of being a housewife and am seriously considering of getting into films again. But, yes, I will want to play roles that have substance and not just any role." Screen India

Voiceovers by Bollywood stars now come at a price

Artistes like Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Manoj Bajpai, Akshay Kumar and Govinda with Bollywood stars and big budget animation films are geared to join the mainstream Around 200-250 film and TV artistes are doing voiceovers to animation characters - from Ravana, to an evil ant to playing narrator to Alibaba or even to a rich spoilt dog. Collectively, these artistes are involved in over 25-30 animation film projects slated for release in the next six years worth somewhere around Rs 250-300 crore. However, compared to Hollywood where they spend millions, in India budgets are modest. According to estimates, between 5 to 6 per cent of a film's total budget is being spent on the art of voicing. Says Mahesh Manjrekar, who has done his first voiceover for Elecom Fiesta Entertainment's Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang budgeted at Rs 4 crore, "Money did not play a role in my decision in being a voiceover for the character of an evil ant. Animation is an altogether different experience that is to lend one's voice to characters who do not talk in the real world. I found giving a voiceover offers much more ease while performing compared to a live action film." Lending one's voice for animation films involves a lot of money. Says producer N.D. Nagpal, "Aanjjan Srivastava charged Rs. 25,000 per day for my Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang while Mahesh Manjrekar charged as much as Rs. 1 lakh per day and he finished his work in seven days." It is reported that Akshay Kumar, his wife Twinkle and their son, while doing voiceover for an upcoming film Jumbo, charged as much as Rs 4.5 crores. Rahul Bakshi, co-producer of the recently-released Dashavatar, in which Shatrughan Sinha was roped in as a narrator, said, "Since Dashavatar was an animation film of a given era, we wanted voices that would recreate the era. For an actor, to do a voiceover, becomes easy , they being in the business of drama. An actor can dramatise the voiceover and make characters sound real and believable". A lot of artistes have either earlier or are currently doing voiceovers. For example in the soon-to-be-released Yash Raj Films' Roadside Romeo we have Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor giving their voices to the characters in the film. Similarly in Maya Entertainment Ltd's (MEL) Ramayana-The Epic, Manoj Bajpai plays Ram, Juhi Chawla plays Sita, Ashutosh Rana plays Ravan while Mukesh Rishi plays Hanuman. Says, Ashutosh Rana, "When MEL approached me through dubbing director Sharang Deo who also provides the music, I was excited to no extent. Since wanting to do an epic was on top of my wish list, I grabbed the role, though I asked Deo to show the scenes they had shot as well as the script. Once, I went though the script, I agreed to do the film." Talking about his experience as a voiceover artiste, Rana avers, "Being from the NSD where we had done a course of voicing, the serial gave me a chance to explore what I had learnt. It was a lovely experience and I finished my part in four days flat spending two hours a day on the job." The job was not difficult either for according to the character artiste, "Any epic may it be Ramayan or Mahabharata, automatically gets into the thought process of every Indian and always keeps on playing in the subconscious mind of people. The same happened to me and it wasn't hard to play the character in a given situation." Says Juhi Chawla, aka Sita, "I still can't figure out what made people at MEL consider of my voice for Sita. But, I felt honoured and lucky on being the chosen one to lend my voice to such a significant person from India's greatest mythological story. I am glad my voice will be recognised as Sita's in times to come. Ramayana is a story that every one of us has grown up listening to, but it's nice that youngsters today will get to see it in an animated form that they would love to watch." Says Manoj Bajpai, "Chetan Desai approached me and talked about their intention to have my voice for the animated character of Ram and when we met and had a few trial recordings, things got finalised. On the answer as to why I was considered for this particular voiceover, the director would be the best person to answer." On his feelings of giving his voice to such an important mythological character, Bajpai says, "It's an achievement of a lifetime for me. I feel absolutely privileged! I have dubbed for countless ordinary movie characters but the feeling of lending my voice to the greatest Indian mythological superhero is very pleasing. Ramayana-The Epic is a movie for the present generation and am glad that have been able to contribute in a small way to get them acquainted to the rich culture of India. I am convinced and content about the fact that my voice will stay forever in the name of Ram." Screen India

"I won't direct Mr. India 2" - Shekhar Kapoor

Shekhar Kapoor won't be directing the sequel to Mr. India for producer Boney Kapoor. "They want to make it. I'm involved in the creative advisory capacity. I don't want to direct it. I've already done it before. I don't want to do it again. But it'll have to be a completely different take on the theme." The 'invisibility' theme will of course remain. "The theme was ahead of its times. But it wasn't the invisibility that made the film work. It worked because the invisibility was shown in a very an interesting way. If you look back at Mr. India you remember the characters the most. It was the emotions and the fun quotient that worked. Those qualities will have to be preserved. But there's no Mogambo anyway." Coming to his next directorial venture, Shekhar Kapoor won't be casting established stars in his next film Paani. "If you cast Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan or Tom Cruise, you're tailoring the project according to the stars. That's not what I do. I've never done that. When I worked with Cate Blanchett and Heath Ledger they were completely unknown." Even as he prepares to start his first Hindi film in Mumbai since Mr India, Shekhar Kapoor is bowled over by the new crop of films. "It's a very good time for Hindi cinema. Look at people like Madhur Bhandarkar and Abbas Tyrewala. Abbas' Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na is amazing. He has always been one of the best writers we have. His writing in Jaane Tu... looks so simple. It takes a lot of talent, thought and energy to make something that simple. I also liked Imran Khan immensely. He wasn't introduced on the screen with a fight or song. He creeps in from behind and takes over. Nishikant Kamat's Mumbai Meri Jaan and is very interesting. I see a new crop of very talented actors and directors in Mumbai. What's really interesting is that they are getting producers to back them. Full marks to UTV for backing films like Mumbai Meri Jaan, Aamir and Wednesday. These are directors who don't make films from foreign videos. As for mainstream filmmakers, someone's gotta do films like Singh Is Kinng. I think the big blockbusters are also very important."

Nandana Sen's first Bengali film

Though she has been part of Indian cinema for ten years, Bengali Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's daughter, Nandana Sen has never done a Bengali film before. She's ready to remedy that lacuna. It's a film called Kaler Rakhal directed by National award winner Shekhar Das. It's to be shot in Shantiniketan. "I play this Indian student from Germany making a film. It's my first Bengali film. And I'm very excited because I think, dream, fight and sing in Bengali." Coincidentally, two other Mumbai-based actresses Bipasha Basu and Riya Sen too have just done their first Bengali films, both with director Rituparno Ghosh. Another role that has Nandana all revved up is the one in Zindabad. "It's a political satire where I play a bright-eyed reporter who changes during the course of a day from a dreamer to a realist."
