Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani conduct Masterclass at Subhash Ghai's WWI

They say two is always better than one. And proving this just right were none other than director- producer- actor Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani, who were recently at the Whistling Woods for a 'Master Class' with the students of the institute. For the uninitiated, 'Master Class' is class that's held regularly throughout the year for the students at the Whistling Woods International (WWI) and is undoubtedly the 'Event of the Week', whereby the students get to hear at first hand, the thoughts, ideas and philosophy of the filmmaker visiting the campus. During the interactive sessions with all the wannabe Farhans who were still reeling under the Rock On spell, a Q & A session with Farhan himself was more than a dream come true! Farhan patiently answered all the questions ranging from his childhood days, his entry into and also tryst with Bollywood, to name a few. When he was asked as to how it feels to be directed by someone else, Farhan, with his trademark smile, said that "It was no big deal. Right from the days of Dil Chahta Hai, the atmosphere on the sets of the film was such that even if it was the director who had the last word, anyone was free to give his suggestions". Over and above all this, he also gave an 'insight' of his forthcoming films: The Fakir of Venice (which actually happens to be his first film as an actor) and also his sister Zoya's Luck By Chance. He also spoke about the stark similarity between Rock On and Dil Chahta Hai. He said, "Both films transported me to the same emotional space". In essaying the lead role in Rock On, playing the guitar and singing, I realized my own dreams of playing music, touring with the band and performing live. I still relish the camaraderie that the Rock On experience has brought to me. With due credit to director Abhishek Kapoor, I feel that Rock On has created a certain parameter by which other films based on music will be gauged. I do intend to take up acting assignments, but will surely not stop directing. I personally believe that to act and direct at the same time is too difficult. I feel a certain degree of skill and understanding of the format needs to be reached before I can do it with confidence". If Farhan held the audiences' reaction, Ritesh had them simply spellbound! Hailing from a business-oriented family completely unrelated to cinema, he likes to call himself as 'an ardent film buff'. Ritesh admitted that much of his knowledge of cinema was acquired through seeing films, focusing in particular on the 'behind the scenes' of films and on reading books on the subject of film-making, including screen-writing. Even as he disarmingly said that he would not mind attending a film school, even now, the young producer answered with great precision and clarity the many questions posed to him by the students and soon had them hooked on to what he had to say on the business of film-making. When asked about his 'role' in his films, he said that "I am involved in every level of production, participating in every meeting held during pre-production, as also attending location scouting and song-recordings. I would like to advice everyone to spend enough time on the sets as nobody in production will ever say that they know it all. There is a new challenge everyday, and a new set of problems to overcome each time". When some curious mind asked him about the very cordial relationship between producer and the director, Ritesh said that "I would like to emphasize on the importance of a director being open for discussion. I have always believed in understanding the creative call of a director and in going along with other sensibilities; as a producer, I would ask myself the question as to 'Why does a director ask for something (not entirely planned for, earlier)'? When convinced, I am prepared to do anything that will 'make my film look better'. And when someone asked him about the importance of budgeting to publicize and push one's film, Ritesh, in a true business like fashion said that "The audience is very smart, so be true to your promos". He also pointed out at the 'Promotion is the Key to Success' as the success mantra! And lastly, when asked about his take on the breed of new directors, he said, "These new directors have a different perspective. They bring in freshness and new ideas with them. Besides, cinema is changing and so is the audience". Farhan and Ritesh ended the mind gripping session with a very optimistic note which stated 'There is no problem to which there is no solution!'

Neha Dhupia & Ritwik make their relationship public in the 'People' mag

The 'People' magazine brings out yet another celebrity confession in its November issue. We are indeed talking about the gorgeous Neha Dhupia and the 'squashing shuttler' (no pun intended) Ritwik Bhattacharya, who had been denying their courtship for a very long time. The good news is that after having made Deepika and Ranbir confess their profound love for each other, this magazine now carries Neha and Ritwik's confession about their ongoing relationship! This issue sees Neha going on record to say that, "There has been a lot of speculation in the press about our relationship. There were stories about us not being together". To which, Ritwik adds that, "People who needed to know always knew about our relationship. Also, now we are more comfortable with each other. So, I guess this is the right time to talk about our relationship." The two also speak about their take on past relationships, on taking the next step, on marriage, on parents' reaction etc... All in all, it's a must-buy for all you Neha fans and even otherwise!

"Yuvvraaj has been a creative challenge for me" - A.R. Rahman

If there is one person who truly symbolizes the age-old saying, "Actions speak louder than words", he has to be A.R.Rahman. The music composer is known to be quite shy and hence prefers to let his work (read music) do all the talking. Hence, when it was time for a tete-a-tete with the greatest composer of the present generation, we knew that each minute is precious. On the occasion of the music launch of Subhash Ghai's forthcoming musical extravaganza Yuvvraaj, Bollywood Hungama caught up with A.R.Rahman and quizzed him on what he has in store for all Rahmaniacs (die-hard A.R. Rahman fans) this time around with the soundtrack of Yuvvraaj. You simply don't wanna miss this one. This year has been a treat for A.R.Rahman fans. After a royal, vintage score in Jodhaa Akbar you gave us the peppy and zany Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na. What do you have in store for your fans with Yuvvraaj? The music of Yuvvraaj is something which we (Mr, Ghai, Gulzaar saab and myself) have all worked very hard on. Since the film itself is a musical, the music plays a very important role. I wouldn't like to say much about what's in store as far as the music goes. I don't even want to say the clichéd stuff that this is completely different from what I have done. All I would like to ask the people is to listen it for themselves and I hope they like it (smiles). I don't want to say the clichéd stuff. All I would like to ask the people is to listen it for themselves and I hope they like it Subhash Ghai's films are known for the music and this one is a musical. You've worked with Mr. Ghai earlier in Taal and then in Kisna. How similar or different has been the experience working with the showman? It has always been a pleasure to associate with Subhashji on his projects. Working on the music of Yuvvraaj has been a creative challenge for me, as Subhashji has always been associated with melodious music and has a vast understanding about the subject. As for comparisons with Taal, all I would say is that this is completely different. It's a different story, set in a different place and is also multi-cultural. Taal was more Punjabi-friendly, remix, rhythmic kind of music etc. whereas Yuvvraaj is more about melody and love etc... Yuvvraaj being a musical and a grand film, audio is just 50%. The visuals and the music complement each other. Taal was more Punjabi-friendly, remix, rhythmic kind of music etc. whereas Yuvvraaj is more about melody and love. Did you give him many sleepless nights considering you like to work at night? I had a request from Mrs.Ghai asking me not to work very late in the night. So whenever it was 12 at night, I used to tell him, "I am tired. So let's call it a day" (laughs) The music of Yuvvraaj has a very European kind of a feel with symphony, large scale orchestrations etc. Yeah, we've used a Motif from Beethoven's 5th Symphony because the story is set in Austria/ Prague etc. Hence, we wanted that experience and feel to come alive through the music. After 'Jashn-e-Bahaara', Javed Ali became a household name; after 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi', Rashid Ali had truly arrived. Do you think it's going to be Benny Dayal this time who has crooned the soulful 'Tu Hi Toh Meri Dost Hai' in Yuvvraaj? I hope so (smiles). I really wish Benny has a great future. He is a very hardworking boy. In fact, he has even sung a song for me in Ghajini which I am sure people will like. My best wishes are always with him. You are known to give new singers a chance be it Naresh Iyer or Rashid Ali or Benny Dayal. How do you find this new and untapped talent every time? It just happens. We just check them out and if they are good enough we give them a break (smiles). They usually say that you reserve the best track for yourself in every album, be it 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' in Jodhaa Akbar or 'Tu Bole' in Jaane Tu....is it true in the case of Yuvvraaj? (smiles) In Yuvvraaj, I have not sung much. I have just sung bits and pieces here and there. Though Mr. Ghai wanted me to sing, I don't think my voice matches Salman Khan's. He has a much deeper voice. If I feel convinced that it's working for the betterment of the film's music I retain it, else I remove it. In Yuvvraaj I have not sung much. I have just sung bits and pieces here and there. Though Mr. Ghai wanted me to sing, I don't think my voice matches Salman Khan's. How long did it take to compose the music for Yuvvraaj and what was the brief given? The initial brief was Mr Ghai always wanted to have a full fledged orchestra kind of a musical score and with Yuvvraaj he has fulfilled his desire. I hope people like it and appreciate it. Lyrics have been written by Gulzar Saab...How has been the experience working with him? I love working with Gulzaar saab. His whole temperament and vast experience is something which I really admire. All the films that I have worked with him have been really enjoyable. I love working with Gulzaar saab. His whole temperament and vast experience is something which I really admire. I know one should never ask a music composer to pick his favorite track but nevertheless which track is closest to your heart? I like 'Tu Muskura'...it's a really soulful number. A lot has been said about Katrina playing the cello. Whose idea was it and is it the first time that the cello has been used in a Hindi film? It was Mr. Ghai's idea. I don't think the cello has been used in any other Hindi film on screen. The sight of a beautiful girl playing an instrument like the cello seems like an overwhelming visual. It's really nice. Have you used the cello in many songs? It's almost interwoven in every song. Is it true that the sound of the cello is closest to the human voice? Yes...provided it's played properly (laughs) In today's time and age there doesn't seem to be any rivalry among music composers. You have someone like Shankar Mahadevan who every now and then sings for Vishal-Shekhar and even Vishal has sung a lot for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Have you been approached by other music composers to song and will you do that? I have been approached. They have been very kind to ask me to lend my voice but I am signed by a company and hence cannot go beyond my contract. Which soundtracks have you liked in the recent past? I've heard a couple of songs of Rock On. I loved the trailer and the whole concept seems really interesting. I want to watch Rock On. I've heard a couple of songs of Rock On. I loved the trailer and the whole concept seems really interesting. I want to watch Rock On. Earlier this year, on your birthday you launched your dream project K M Music Conservatory in Chennai. How is work coming along on that front? It has been really good. The first batch of students has already been enrolled and the response has been more than encouraging. Is it true that you are part of a T.V. show called The Big Band? Could you take us through that? The Big Band is a search for the best band. I liked the concept when Phat Phish came and narrated the idea to me. We are looking at exploring talent not just across India but also from neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia etc. It will also facilitate in some sort of a cultural exchange between our musicians and their musicians. I am really excited about being part of the show. Finally, what's next in line after Yuvvraaj? After Yuvvraaj, there is the Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini. I am also doing the music for Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.'s multi-starrer Blue. There is also Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, the music of which is already done. So there's a lot to look forward too.

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Roadside Romeo

Oh Romeo Romeo, wherefore art though? Forget Shakespeare and all his spin-offs. Forget even Baz Luhrman's Romeo & Juliet on steroids. Roadside Romeo is the coolest wham. What's it about? Well....it's a bout of a pout and a bit of a kick, a wacky whammy romance between two savvy wunder-dogs thrown our way in a casual chic manner that makes the animation characters seem like replicas of their potboiler avatars from feature films. Maybe the plot should've been less formulistic to go with the innovative format and genre. Nonetheless this has got to be the most urbane and coolest take on the rights and wrongs of that thingy called love-shove. First things first. So far animation films in India have been mainly restricted to revisionist interpretations of the mythologicals. In Roadside Romeo, director Jugal Hansraj goes for the jugular, and the jocular. The story of a rich no-thank-you-mansion-not canine from the well-to-do part of the city and the slum (and need we add, slim since it's Kareena behind the mike?) seductress Laila is peppered with every ingredient that makes an alluring entertainer. The main voices are used to telling advantage. Saif scores subtle points over Kareena whose dubbing tends to veer towards boredom. But then she is the blasé seductress, isn't she? But it is Javed Jaffry a seasoned voice-ourvre brings great vigour and vivacity to the slum-lord's role. There are the non-primary characters too, giving the central romance a catchily cute spin without taking the slim narrative to an over-the-top stratosphere. Most important of all, the quality of animation and the detailing that has gone behind its execution are exemplary. We really haven't seen anything like this in Hindi. The songs, dialogues, action and reaction add up to quite a fun-filled festival of swirling colours and dancing divas, devas and devils. Roadside Romeo is a smartly-executed piece of slip-in-slip-out cinema. Ideal popcorn-khao-ghar-jao entertainment during this festive season which kids will enjoy and the grownups will giggle about.

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Heroes

Now, where did this come from???!!! Not since Rakeysh Mehra's Rang De Basanti have we seen a film so inspiring. Portions of Heroes are pure genius, sparkling with the unshed tears of a mother whose child has died before she could hold it in her arms and nurture it. Here's a piece of cinema that we need to stand and applaud for its idealism, its absolute absence of cynicism in telling a story that invites the conscience to cry for a country and global society that can't think beyond its own nose. But wait. Heroes is not a flag-waving exercise propagating the join-the-army message. Yes, to begin with, the film does put forward that message. So did Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya. But that's another story. Soon enough you journey across the toughest Indian terrain of intense warmth and acute cold in pursuit of a dream that transcends the nightmare of everyday existence. And you realize Heroes is about bereavement and how to cope with it without getting cynical about sloganeering subjects like patriotism and desh-bhakti. To a wife in Punjab who copes with a child and her dead soldier's parents on her own, or a wheelchaired soldier who has lost his kid brother to war, or to an aging couple coping with the death of their only son to war, does it matter if the country needs to be protected from outside aggression? The answer to the question is not provided in rhetorics and sermons but in the course of the vivid journey that takes our two narrators Sohail and Vatsal Sheth to the heart of the country. Heroes follows suit. It's shot on location in the hearts of characters who are wounded by war without going to the battle field. This isn't the first film about the war bereaved coping with their loss. At times, Heroes is redolent of J.P Dutta's Border and LOC Kargil....those homesick soldiers writing those lovelorn letters from the battlefront, the battery of war vehicles winding their way through the mountainous terrain, the soldiers coming home in coffins... Yup, we've seen it all before. But director Samir Karnik succeeds in taking the theme of social responsibility patriotism and soldierly duties far beyond the cliches. Some interludes woven into the multitude of grieving characters' lives are heart stopping in their poetic lucidity. The look in Preity's eyes when she holds her dead husband's letter in her trembling hands, or much much later when our two narrators reach a snowcapped salvation and travel in a vehicle loaded with coffins of war martyrs...or Mithun Chakraborty's breakdown before his dead son's picture....dude, this is not an ordinary cinematic happening! Heroes connects with us in ways that are emotional and spiritual. Often while you watch the characters live through a devastating loss, you feel the screenwriter, dialogue writer and director breathe a vigorous life into the scenes by harnessing and articulating feelings that threaten to be washed by tears. Karnik goes for an emotional understatement even when he's at liberty to pull out all stops. All three segments of bereavement and reconciliation are designed with a great deal of emotional honesty and clamped intensity. If one has to pick a favourite it would have to be the first overture in journey where Vatsal-Sohail meet the brave Punjabi war widow. Disappearing into herself to emerge with a character who is ramrod-straight and dignified in her tragedy, Preity Zinta gives the film's best performance…and that's saying a lot in film scattered with sensitive portrayals. Preity's eyes convey aeons of dignified pain. Effortlessly and persuasively Karnik goes from pure emotionalism to unstoppered populism. Watch Sunny Deol's fight in the pub where he swings into full-fledged action from a wheelchair. This is what the junta would call a full paisa-vasool sequence. It's astonishing how the director uses full-blown commercial actors to play characters who touch emotions that are generally denied access in our mainstream cinema. Besides Preity, Sunny Deol (more for his character's packaging than basic performance) and Mithun Chakbraborty, the child actor Dwij Yadav and Sohail Khan leave the strongest impression. Vatsal Sheth's rawness goes well with his spoilt-rich-coming-of-age character, a sort of Hrithik Roshan from Lakshyaon wheels. The actors are supported by locations that ooze the emotions of the characters in the right shades of life. The two cinematographers Binod Pradhan and Gopal Shah create stirring echoes of spiritual and emotional majesty without letting the colour schemes become over-representational. Throughout, the narrative retains the rhythms and emotions of life, never letting go of the threads that bind humanity to the suffering that comes with the existential territory. On the minus side, the songs and dances are largely over-stated and obtrusive. Sohail and Vatsal's striptease with Riya Sen and Amrita Arora belongs to another film, another world. A special word for Samir Karnik and Aseem Arora's dialogues. The conversations convey both the reality of real life and the richness of a life that exists beyond the mundane motions of everyday chit-chat. Did Samir Karnik really make Kyun! Ho Gaya Na. Will the real artiste please stand up? And take a bow.

Big B, Zayed Khan to star in Sanjay Dutt Productions' India?

A few days back we had informed you about Sanjay Dutt having signed young director Soham (of Kaal fame) to direct an action adventure film for his production house. The film has been titled India and the buzz is that the film may star none other than Amitabh Bachchan in all probability. Bollywood Hungama spoke to Soham confirming this news, "Yes, I am directing a film for Sanjay Dutt Productions. It's an action adventure film called India. As for the cast, all I can say is that the film will have 5 major characters. Mr. Sanjay Dutt is in talks with Mr.Amitabh Bachchan for one of the main characters but it's yet to be finalized. We are also in talks with Zayed Khan for one of the characters. It's too early to talk about the cast since we are still narrating the scripts to the actors. The film should go on floors sometime in the middle of next year." Meanwhile, Soham is busy finishing Luck which stars Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Ravi Kishan, Shruti Hassan etc. "Yes ...Luck is almost 90% complete. I have one schedule to wrap up in South Africa in Jan 2009. Luck should be out in the summer of 2009." Well, after a not-so-successful start with Dharma Productions' Kaal, young and talented Soham surely seems to be going places.

Samir Karnik to make a thriller titled Formula No.44

Formula No. 44. That's the title of Samir Karnik's next film. "It's my first action-packed film. It'd be my first thriller. After a romantic film, then a film about man-child bonding and now a travelogue, I think I need some physical action in my cinema," says Samir Karnik 15 years ago, Samir Karnik and a friend, photographer Anant Vijay Singh, took off on a motorcycle journey through Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. That journey, undertaken by the two friends to deliver an automobile for the BBC to its destination, has become Karnik's film. "I don't know why people think Heroes is a remake of Walter Salles' Motorcyle Diaries. The only thing in common between Motorycle Diaries and my film is the motorcycle. It could easily have been a truck. In fact, Tata offered us a tie-up. But how would Sohail Khan and Vatsal Sheth have looked riding on a truck through India making a film on why not to join the army?" That's what Sohail and Vatsal set out to do in Heroes. Recalls Karnik, "Initially I named my film Mera Bharat Mahaan...because that's what Sohail and Vatsal name the film they're making. Then I realized the patriotic overtones were too overpowering. So I changed the title." "They echo my journey fifteen years ago with my friend. While riding pillion with Vatsal Seth, Sohail even has nasty fall. I've retained the shot in the film." Heroes is a tribute to its director's love for the great outdoors. "I don't like making my films in studios. I'd rather go out there and feel the breeze on my face. I've always gone into unexplored territory even in my first film Kyun, Ho Gaya Na." Karnik had to rush-release Heroes. "When we heard Nikhil Advani's Chandni Chowk To China was being pulled out of the pre-Diwali week we rushed to grab it." Karnik admits that the Viveik Oberoi-Aishwarya Rai starrer became a bit of an off-screen joke. "I got stabbed in the back. The industry boycotted me. It was a pretty bleak phase for me until Bobby came along. His support resurrected my career." And now Karnik has dedicated Heroes to Bobby. "He doesn't know it yet. But his wife Tanya saw my dedication in the opening titles and she broke down. Bobby is the most chilled-out guy I've met. Our comfort level goes beyond work. We did Nanhe Jaisalmer together (where he played Bobby Deol) and we've one complete film Roshan (starring Bobby and Kangna Ranaut) waiting release. In Heroes, I've cast Bobby and Sunny as brothers. It couldn't be any other way. Everyone from Mithun Chakraborty to Preity Zinta to Dino Morea has offered me full support. I've forgotten the dark period I went through after Kyun Ho Gaya Na." And yes, Bobby will star in Formula No. 44.
