A-Rod Moving to 15 Central Park West to Be Near Madonna?

Photo: Getty Images

Late yesterday, the London Daily Mail reported that Alex Rodriguez was planning on buying an apartment within two blocks of Madonna's Upper West Side pad. The paper ran a picture of 15 Central Park West along with the story, probably not knowing that it is the Most Important Condo Tower in New York City Right Now. So George Rush over at the Daily News called over to, you know, check the story. The Mail supposed that A-Rod was looking at one of the four-bedroom penthouses, which is priced at $80 million. But while Rush hears that Rodriguez is "looking aggressively" at the building, real-estate records show no apartments that size have gone into contract or closed recently, and the Yankee slugger is probably looking at "several cheaper condos."

A-Rod's old Trump Park Avenue apartment has been on the market for a month, for $14 million. Apparently the place held too many memories of his wife, Cynthia. And Madonna recently expanded her own Central Park West pad. Thusly, one of the great celebrity scandals of 2008 slowly morphs, like all other great New York love sagas, into just another story about real estate.

Victory! NBC Orders a Full Season of ‘Knight Rider’

Photo: Courtesy of NBC

Despite the show's bad ratings and even-worse reviews, NBC has hilariously put in a full-season order for Knight Rider, the awful, Hasselhoff-less remake of the not-quite-as-bad eighties TV show. Why would they do such a thing? Presumably because the rest of the network's fall lineup is tanking too and airing nine more episodes of Knight Rider will be slightly less embarrassing than showing infomercials in prime time. With the bar to success this low at NBC, maybe Ben Silverman will get to keep his job after all!

Video: A Taste of Whitney Port’s Spinoff, ‘The City’

Last night during The Hills after-show, MTV previewed Whitney Port's spinoff, The City. It follows her and socialite Olivia Palermo as they work in public relations at Diane Von Furstenberg. Now, the 1:37 preview makes the show seem like it's more about Whitney's boring dates with sleazy guys than her job at DVF. We're infinitely more interested in seeing the latter. But the somewhat magnificent thing about the clip is how Olivia Palermo comes off like she could be the enemy (or frenemy or whatever). She casts evil gazes at Whitney from across the dinner table on fancy rooftops. Because naturally 22-year-old girls who work in fashion PR live in high-rise apartments with glass balconies large enough for dining tables and plants and stuff.

Cops ‘Terrorized’ by Grifting Granny

Photo: Nypost.com

Today the Manhattan Supreme Court will hear the story of Katherine Kelly, a.k.a. Charlotte Petrovas, Charlotte Martinelli, Mildred Friedman, or, as we've decided to call her, Grandma Awesome. In her 76 years on earth, the five-foot-six, 128-pound old lady has been convicted for theft 37 times, including a time where she attempted to rob a salon wearing clown makeup. She's gotten so good at hiding that not even her friends know where to find her. "She's like a damn gypsy," her former partner, who told the police he once took a picture of her on her bed fanning out a wad of cash, told the Post. "You never know where she's going next." He continued:

"But she's a 76-year-old woman who can hardly walk — her back hurts her so bad," he told The Post. "How could this woman knock off 25 stores — that's impossible. What's her secret? I'd like to know."

Indeed, Grandma Awesome was so elusive that police had to set up an actual sting operation at Fairway on Broadway recently, where she was caught smuggling an undercover police officer's wallet into her bra. "She was a pickpocket terrorist and had to be caught," one of the cops involved in the sting said. Honestly, it's like the Post wrote Robin Williams's screenplay for him.

Vince Vaughn to Try Comedy

Photo: Getty Images

Clever Like a Fox: Vince Vaughn is in final negotiations with Fox to develop and executive-produce a one-camera half-hour comedy pilot about "young men who are just out of college and starting to experience the real world," to be written by Grounded for Life's Jim and Steve Armogida. Vaughn will no doubt be drawing from his own experiences in the real world after he graduated from … oh, that's right — he didn't go to college. (We live in a meritocracy. Deal with it.) [Variety]

Biggest Momma's House Ever: Producer David Friendly is in the business of making dreams come true. It isn't very often that a moneyman admits taking profits are secondary to creating art, so we consider it big news when someone reveals that Big Momma's House 3 is in script stage and eying a 2009 release. It gives us hope knowing that for every sellout like P.T. Anderson and the Coen brothers, there's someone in Hollywood willing to take actual risks. Not to mention, we're totally hoping Friendly breaks his old Rotten Tomatoes record of 5 percent. [IESB]

Reiner Hides in Shadows: Castle Rock has acquired Book of Shadows, an adventure pitch from Zoe Green, for Rob Reiner to direct. Story follows a young man who goes on an epic quest to find a mythical book that can restore peace to the world. It's all part of Reiner's epic quest to find a mythical movie that can restore dignity to his career. [HR]

Freaks and Greens: Pineapple Express' David Gordon Green will direct the horror-thriller Freaks of the Heartland for Overture Films, based on the Dark Horse graphic novel by Steve Niles. Comic, kind of like Village of the Damned, follows a rural midwestern teenager's attempt to protect his "freak" of a little brother and his "freaky" friends. A cool premise, but unfortunately for movie audiences who like good stories, Greg Ruth's spectacular artwork was definitely the comic's highlight. Green's only hope might be to put M.I.A.'s Paper Planes in the trailer again. [HR]

2929 Heads South of the Border: Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban's 2929 Productions has optioned Kem Nunn's Tijuana Straits for stuntman turned writer turned director Ric Roman Waugh to adapt and direct. Novel focuses on a reclusive ex-surfer who helps a female whistleblower in Tijuana when contract killers are hired to silence her. The Road's Nick Wechsler is producing, so we expect a release date of November 2009 December 2009 February 2010? [Variety]

The Secret Life of ‘Gossip Girl’

Photo: Courtesy of CW

The idea of home, and finding one's place in the world, figured prominently in this week's Gossip Girl. The Bass family hosted a housewarming party in their luxurious condominium, but familial discord hung in the air. Meanwhile, down the street, a riches-to-rags Nate Archibald huddled next to a chilly hearth in his vacant Central Park mansion, with only his bangs to keep him warm. And Chuck Bass? Chuck Bass just tried to find his way. As did the writers, who appeared to have cut-and-pasted portions of The Secret Life of Bees into the Cruel Intentions screenplay for this week's episode. Was it successful? We can't really say. But we can say whether it was realistic. The weekly tally, after the jump.

Realer Than a Protest Against "Evil Developers"' in Brooklyn
• Would Blair really keep saying "crush her" like that? Actually, yeah, she would. Plus 1.
• Eric, in a rare bratty teen moment (seriously, the kid never gives lip. Who is he, Dakota Fanning?), asks "Who watches TV on a TV anymore?" Plus 3, but, oh, sad for us old people who used to have to be sitting down at a specific time and place (Ben Weaver's basement!) if we wanted to watch Friends.
• When Rufus says, "I'm thinking Wham," he looks right at Nate's bangs. Coincidence? We think not. Plus 3.
• Dan's heart-to-heart with Serena is so dead-on, from when she drops the hint that "the person who she'd most like to talk to, she can't anymore" to Dan's adolescent-sage take on Lily: "You ever think your mom acts like she's perfect because she's too far from it to acknowledge that she's not?" And then of course Serena is like, gee, I never even thought of that! You're so smart. And then Dan shrugs, like, yeah, I'm a writer, you know. Plus 3.
• Serena goes out with the ladies to "1Oak and Bijoux." Plus 3.
• "What happens at Yale stays at Yale." Plus 3 for awesomeness, even though (sadly for Chris) that's not true. The Internet is forever.
• We know they wanted us to look this up, so we did. Lauren Goldenberg, the slut who gave all the boys on the soccer team mono, is Gossip Girl's script coordinator. Hiiiii Lauren. Plus 1 because it's kind of sweet and familial how they do that, which is on-theme.
• The details of Blair's room when we see them in the day are really spot-on. There are little dolls on a bookcase behind her, and a purple fluffy stuffed animal, and those weird pastel box things that every teenage girl has. Of course later on she (Dorota?) transforms it into a full-on sex den with candelabras and actual chilled Champagne, which no actual teenager would ever do. Plus 1 only.
• Blair and the other Girls From the Steps hold a "disciplinary hearing" for a girl called Kelsey. "I didn't know!" she sobs. "That tights are not pants?!" shrieks Blair. Plus 1.
• "Archibald — isn't it about time you ended this little bromance?" Plus 1.
• This exchange between Dan and Jenny was worth a Plus 7, because finally someone gave Jenny a line that was funny and observant about somebody else and also because they finally addressed something we've been wondering about: "It's so weird that you're on a team now," she says to Dan. "Pretty soon you’re going to have actual guy friends." "What are you talking about?" he asks. "I have plenty of guy friends." "Dan, I know that you're Mr. Soccer now, but you and I both know you prefer to hang out with girls." (And Plus another 1 for the fact that Jenny barely pouted even once this episode!)
• Serena tells In Style that her mom's husband was "a raging cokehead and left blow everywhere." Eric corrects her. "It wasn't everywhere. Just on the smooth, shiny surfaces." Plus 1.
• "My my, that girl has gotten under your skin," Chuck says to Blair. She replies, "The question is, Bass — will you?" Um, EW. But Plus 2 because even Blair has to miss sometimes.
• "Did you have a reason for coming to see me?" Chuck asks. "Because if it was to insult me, there's a Website you can go to." Plus 1, because it actually made us wonder if he was referring to Gossip Girl, or whether there was one specifically for Chuck Bass.
• Eric's boyfriend is cute but not ridiculously cute, which is just so perfect. Plus 2 because the sweet guy is always the one you date second. Also Plus 2 because Serena goes bonkers trying to be nice to this one, and Plus 2 because he's an Upper East Side gay who is young but already isn't offended by having to occasionally hide in the closet.
• Blair sends Chuck a text that says she's "en route to J Sisters." Awesome.

Faker Than In Style Planning an Article on Anyone Not in the Entertainment Business
• Gossip Girl's homepage at the start of the episode wonders whether Chuck is "the new LonelyBoy." No. Minus 1.
• Dan tries out for soccer? What? Everybody knows senior year is way too late to try a new sport (even though Dan was hilariously stupid describing the mechanics of the game — it was like he was reciting the Skeleton Song). Minus 2. Plus, Nate would totally play lacrosse, duh. Minus only 1, because at least now every gay man in the world can incorporate Chace Crawford's face into their requisite soccer-player fantasy.
• It is statistically impossible for Bart to have dated "half the models in Manhattan," as Serena says he did. Even if at one moment in time he did sleep with "half" the models in New York, the rotation of models in and out of the city happens at far too a rapid a pace for that "half" to be present now, or at any given time. According to our calculations, a new model arrives in New York approximately every 0.0668 seconds. Each model is out of the city, on average, two days a week. Thus, u = v+w/ 1 +vw/c2. Impossible. Minus 2.
• Lilly is wearing sequins at breakfast. Minus 1.
ARIEL FOXMAN, WE HATE YOU AND YOUR BIG, BEAUTIFUL, GOSSIP GIRL–CAMEO–HAVING EYES.
• When Nate goes to the hot-dog cart to get water, Dan calls Jenny and manages to explain everything about Nate's homelessness. Granted: The Central Park hot-dog guys are not the speediest at customer service. But the lines aren't that long. Plus, wouldn't he have just talked with Jenny on the way to meet Nate? Minus 2.
• Since when is Vanessa allowed to wear something strapless and shiny? Minus 1. Also, she is too poor to afford that necklace. Minus 1 again.
• When Chuck drops by, Blair just happens to be lounging about in lingerie. Minus 1, because we thought we were past this.
• Okay, let's talk about Chuck's dalliance with the Brooklyn Inn. When he first gets there, someone throws a tomato at him, which no one in Brooklyn would ever actually do, because those tomatoes are from a farm upstate and cost $14. So Minus 1 for that. But then when he goes back a second time, he is warmly welcomed by the owner, an old-timey black man — Arst? Ernst? Vanessa mumbles — who has all kinds of old-timey stories about Joe Kennedy and the olden times and whose appearance is always accompanied by jazz, pretty much exactly in the same way that a gong always sounded when Long Duck Dong appeared in Sixteen Candles. Arst/Ernst takes a shine to Chuck right away, not just because of his stylin' wardrobe but because "he knows people." Because he is soulful. "You would have fit right in," he tells him, and Chuck's heart swells instantly, because everyone likes to be accepted by the People From the Neighborhood. "That's possibly the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me," he says. Chuck belongs with those people! Except then Vanessa tells Arst/Ernst about his bet with Blair and they shun him, because you don't mess with the People From the Neighborhood. One question: Why is there an old-timey black man running the Brooklyn Inn? All that's ever there is skinny white hipsters. Minus 10.
• When Serena came to the party wearing the suit that Bart bought her and no shirt underneath, we were immediately like, "Ha, Serena showed up topless, Bart is going to freak." And when Lily and Bart looked all panicked, we thought, "Bart is going to steer her out of there by the elbow and tell her to put on a camisole or something, like, now. But instead he just goes, "You look nice." Huh. We can't decide whether to take points off for this.
• The most annoying thing about Serena blowing up like that in front of In Style is that In Style totally wouldn't have appreciated the awesomeness of it. Like even if Bart hadn't gotten the story killed, they wouldn't have published it. They would have just like done a spread on Blair's headbands or whatever. It should have been the Observer. Minus 2.
• Okay, Nate living by himself in the mansion with nobody knowing about it would probably never have happened. First of all, "Page Six" would have been all over the house getting repossessed, and even Nate isn't dumb enough to just like leave the "seized" sign on his doorstep. Minus 2. (Plus, even rich boys with man-bangs have mothers. Or at least Dorotas.)
• Okay, so we were a little surprised at how aware Vanessa was when she decided to blackmail Blair, even if it was a little random. But we went with it until Blair deleted all of the pictures in Vanessa's phone and then somehow the problem was all solved. How come every single other person on this show knows to make backup copies of everything incriminating except for Vanessa? Minus 3, because in an earlier episode she did make a backup video of one that Chuck gave her ten thousand dollars for. She clearly wouldn't forget that trick.

Okay, put your points in the comments! We'll tally them up at the end of the week!

Not Waving But Drowning Play What Is Perhaps the Nuttiest Loft Show We’ve Ever Seen

Photo: J-sun Burns

We were proffered, and accepted, a pot-laced Rice Krispies treat at some point during Not Waving But Drowning's album-release show at this woman's nutty Williamsburg loft on Saturday, but this story's better told by an unreliable narrator anyhow. Let's go back to the invitation, a letter from "Leopold" to "Ferdinand," which began this way:

You slatternly syphilitic blackguard, you whoremonger of faithless livestock, you cancerous disordered wretch! I read your latest piece of correspondence with the growing conviction that, not only did you leave behind any remaining shred of Christian decency when you fled my arms those many years ago, but that now you have lost your ever-slim and tenuous grip on sanity as well.

And then there was the venue, stuffed to the beams with all manner of carefully curated weird stuff: fancy ashtrays, melted candles, old editions of good books, lengths of rope. One wall was exclusively decorated with rusty farm implements. All that was missing was a fetus preserved in a jar, although there might've been one of those in the bedroom. Entry was half-off for people in costume, and folks came like it was Halloween; flappers consorted with men in top hats, or wearing suspenders. The band — Pinky Weitzman, Mason Brown, John Frazier, Jeremy Forbis, and on one song, Mason Brown's dad — hauled their banjo, violin, musical saw, and the like out in front of an expanse of windows overlooking the Williamsburg Bridge. It was a rollicking steampunk hoedown, and it climaxed with a burlesque dancer getting completely naked — no pasties! We left in a daze.

Kate Moss's Christmas-Party Wardrobe Advice

Kate Moss partying.
Photo: WireImage

If the British tabloids are to be believed, Kate Moss got back together with Jamie Hince only after she agreed to party less. But that didn't stop her from granting an interview to the London Times about partying. And what do you know — her current favorite drink is a vodka tonic and she likes to dance with her girlfriends and "men that can dance." Fascinating. As for proper party styling:

What is your fail-safe party item? A little black dress, of course. If I’m going dancing, then I wear the highest heels with the shortest dress.

Can you describe your perfect night out? My favourite nights out are nights with lots of friends... I’ve always had great – probably my most memorable – nights out and some brilliant parties on my birthday, particularly my 30th. I later found out that the dress I wore that night was owned by Britt Ekland, and she wore it to the premiere of The Man with the Golden Gun. I love it so much, I used it to inspire a dress in my Topshop Christmas collection. It is intricately covered in midnight-blue sequins, so we have only produced 10 of the full-length version. There is also a shorter mini version, which will be more readily available. It’s perfect for Christmas parties, and looks best when worn with casual, rocky hair and ankle boots.

When we think of dressing for Christmas parties, visions of cashmere sweaterdresses and combed hair dance in our heads. Not to mention sipping warm mead around the fire with family members. However, we kind of like the idea of showing up to a family gathering in a sequined minidress with seriously smoky eyes and mussed hair. Topped off with a disaffected attitude and a new affinity for cigarettes. Just to freak out Mom for old time's sake, since we're not planning on piercing our faces or getting a boy's name tattooed on our shoulder anytime soon.

Raffaello Follieri Created a ‘False Image of Success,’ Say Prosecutors

Photo: Getty Images

Okay, we are actually starting to feel kind of bad for Raffaello Follieri. First, there was Anne Hathaway's completely insane appearance on Saturday Night Live, wherein she made fun of they guy she broke up with in June as he sat in jail. "I broke up with my boyfriend, and two weeks later he was sent to prison for fraud," she said. "I mean, we've all been there, right ladies?" Hahahahaha. No, stop, that's totally weird. We just picture him watching it on his little black-and-white prison TV with all the other prisoners, and Monty the scarred, mean hermaphrodite prostitute taunting him about it in the mess hall or whatever for weeks, and wow, we know someone told you that would be funny, but that that was just not very nice, Anne.

Then today, prosecutors rebuffed Follieri's lawyers' request for leniency in his sentencing this Thursday, reiterating his crimes and saying he created a "false image of success." A false image of success! We know it's true, but did they need to say it like that?

They went on.

"Unlike narcotics traffickers and violent felons who often come from impoverished families, lack education and other opportunities, and grow up surrounded by bad influences, Follieri apparently had the background, family values and education to know better," they snarfed.

Now hold up. Wait a second. Have these people even done background research? Have they not read the essential dossier on Raffaello Follieri? By which we mean have they not seen Page Six Magazine or Vanity Fair's features? Because if they had, then they would know that Follieri's father, Pasquale, was convicted in 2005 by an Italian court of embezzling $300,000 from a company whose assets he’d been asked to manage. Which means any defense lawyer worth their salt could invert the claim that his flashy playboy scheming ways are not hereditary and argue that they are hereditary and therefore it is not his fault! Because if one makes a claim in a court of law saying that something is not true and it turns out to actually be true, then even if it doesn't really have anything to do with anything, but you say it with a lot of conviction, then you win! Wow, we're really good at this. We knew we should have gone into law.

Jennifer Senior and Dahlia Lithwick on Palin’s ‘SNL’ Appearance and McCain’s Problems With Women

Photo: Courtesy of NBC

Every day (or close to it) until November 4, a series of writers and thinkers will discuss the election over instant messenger for nymag.com. Today, New York's Jennifer Senior and Slate's Dahlia Lithwick discuss Sarah Palin's Saturday Night Live appearance, how McCain and his campaign relate to women, and the trap of becoming a "mean girl."

J.S.: Say, Dahlia, did you catch Sarah Palin on SNL this weekend? I'll confess I had to YouTube it, because I fall asleep most nights before 11:30 ...

D.L.: I watched the first skit live and collapsed after the painfully bad skit that happened directly after — the one at a restaurant that involved a lot of hollering? Me to husband: "Did Sarah Palin write this skit?"

J.S.: If only she could write a bad SNL skit. I dream of a Sarah Palin that can write a bad SNL skit.

D.L.: Let's start with the slightly less horrifying first skit. The punch line of which appeared to be: "Heh heh, I don't hold press conferences." Er, am I wrong that it is not really the best idea for Palin to point that out explicitly, much less to riff on it?

J.S.: No, you're not wrong. I thought she was surprisingly passive in her role there. People praised her for being a good sport, but I thought it was more than that — I thought she sorta rolled over. Which, given my own ideological leanings, is fine by me. But I wonder what made her say yes to that ... the same instinct that makes progressives go on O'Reilly's show, maybe?

D.L.: I think she wanted to show she was a good sport. That she did. But then in the spirit of being a good sport she let Tina Fey annihilate her; Alec Baldwin insult and ogle her; and then basically announced that she is too scared to do a straight press conference before the election but will do a comedy show. I don't see how that nets out to her benefit, at all. But then I am baffled by her entire campaign. Last Friday a woman asked me after a conference if I think a Palin loss would be bad for future women candidates. All I could say was "who could possibly argue that Palin says ANYTHING about women candidates." She is an object lesson in unprepared candidates. That's all.

J.S.: I actually think a Palin loss would be good for women candidates; it will show that simply being a woman isn't enough to get you elected.

And on that note, I was trying to decide the other day what it was about Palin that infuriated me so much — why, for instance, I find her lack of curiosity and verbal clumsiness so much more infuriating than George W. Bush's. I think it's because she's the kind of woman who makes men say, "That gal's such a pistol!" (Yeah yeah, I know, and Sarah Palin can tell you which kind.) That kind of thinking pains me more than I can possibly say.

D.L.: I have been thinking a lot about Palin Derangement Syndrome myself. My own hypothesis is that any woman who has struggled to balance a family, a home, and a stressful career owes it to other women to admit it's hard. When Palin brags about firing the cook or not needing babysitting, or reading all newspapers, it's infuriating. It suggests the rest of us, who are constantly in a state of near-madness, are somehow weak.

It occurred to me after the SNL sketches that Palin and Harriet Miers both suffered from the same flaw: They couldn't magically prepare themselves in a few short weeks for one of the hardest jobs in the world. In both cases, their sponsors insisted they were "teachable." But who the heck is "teachable" under this set of facts? A little Pygmalion, anyone?

Picking unqualified women in the hopes they can be transformed (by men) into something flawless in a matter of days is irrational AND sexist. Then the woman is blamed.

J.S.: I'm not sure that this is a Pygmalion fantasy. Palin reminds me as much of Dan Quayle as of Harriet Miers (though I appreciate the parallel). I think this is pure political thinking, a hasty move designed to attract female voters (like Quayle). Choosing Palin, in other words, wasn't about underestimating her, it was about underestimating female voters, just as choosing Quayle was about underestimating female voters — "Sure, I'll vote for Quayle! He's cuuuuuuute!" And: "That Sarah! She's just like me!"

D.L.: But the idea that women would just vote for a woman doesn't explain the selection of a wildly unqualified woman. I fear that is where 'enry 'iggins comes in. You have a raft of qualified GOP women but you pick the blank slate? Why? I fear it's because they thought they could smarten her up right quick, and that makes my blood boil.

J.S.: Yeah, but I could see how they thought she was smart ENOUGH — the same way they thought that George W. was smart enough. I'm curious which GOP woman you think would have been a better selection ...

D.L.: I guess I'd offer up the standard troika of Olympia Snowe, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and/or Condoleezza Rice. I get where they would have done nothing to reel in the base, but seems to me that the Palin choice aggressively antagonized independents and won a base that would have pulled the lever for McCain at the end of the day anyhow …

J.S.: Kay Bailey has the years under her belt, but is she any … er, brighter than Palin? I wouldn't say so. Condi's not interested, or so they say. And I like Olympia, but … well, I've never quite understood why a pro-life candidate can't choose a pro-choice veep, but apparently, he cannot. So that disqualifies her.

D.L.: In fairness, I am guessing that the men McCain would have liked to tap for veep were also ruled out because of their views on abortion. Which continues to astound me, because what percentage of Americans oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest à la Palin? Maybe 9 percent?

J.S.: You're right, a crazy-small number, though I think the nation is evenly divided between pro-choice and pro-life right now, a fact that never ceases to amaze me.

D.L.: Okay, so I'm wrong. I guess approximately 20 percent of Americans would oppose abortion under ANY circumstances. That is a lot. But I wonder if it means 80 percent of Americans would find the "air quotes" around the words "health of the mother" kind of horrifying in last week's debate???

J.S.: Yes, I think they would ... and by the way, that's exactly the way to alienate women, is it not? Which might explain why the ladies, according to the CNN opinometer (I want one of those things for my house) kept giving such high marks to Obama.

D.L.: One more question about Palin for you: Is she to be blamed for the tone of her rallies? For the (few) instances of violence and the death talk? Is she inciting this or just smoking out a sentiment that is already there?

J.S.: I blame her. The fact is, the McCain campaign was supposed to be making an effort to woo centrists and Reagan Democrats and WOMEN — former Hillary supporters. (Though I suppose Hillary herself was saying things like "hardworking white people" by the end of her campaign. Ack. Is it possible some of these people were Hillary supporters...?)

Anyway, it wouldn't take much to change your message and attract those people. You talk about work-life balance and health care and your kids' education ... you don't talk about palling around with terrorists — which, let's face it, is racially shaded.

D.L.: I think Palin went out of her way to trash-talk and polarize and I worry that this is a "mean girl" mode that is scarily comfortable to some women. Look at Ann Coulter. Look at Minnesota Representative Michelle Bachmann, who has been unhinged of late. Why is it so easy for women to fall into the trap of thinking they can get away with talking smack because they have toned thighs and outstanding long-wearing mascara?

J.S.: During the 1994 Gingrich revolution, there were a whole bunch of female aides on Capitol Hill who were just in that mode — they thought the Republican party was a style, a fashion choice, complete with leopard-print leggings (whaaaaaaa?) and red shiny pocketbooks. I'm hoping that Palin is the last gasp of this trend.

McCain Campaign Manager ‘Rethinking’ Using Reverend Wright in Obama Attacks

Reverend Wright
Photo: Getty Images

On Hugh Hewitt's radio talk show today, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told the conservative host that, though John McCain originally ruled out any attacks on his rival over Obama's relationship with former pastor Jeremiah Wright, the controversial minister might be back on the table. "When Congressman Lewis calls John McCain and Sarah Palin and his entire group of supporters, fifty million people strong around this country, that we're all racists and we should be compared to George Wallace," Davis said, "you know that you've got to rethink all these things," Davis said. This sort of seemed inevitable, eh? [HuffPo]

Vulture Takes a Walk With Tom and Suri

Forgive us for being gossipy for a moment, but over the weekend we had a rather strange experience that we feel compelled to share with you: On Saturday evening, during a rare journey outdoors, your Vulture editor ran into (not literally, but almost) Tom and Suri Cruise just above Astor Place. Even though Tom was not wearing his Valkyrie eyepatch, we were still somehow able to place him as the star of Tropic Thunder and the proprietor of TomCruise.com.

He and Suri (plus two bodyguards) were let out of a car near Fourth Avenue and 10th Street, and they went north to Pie by the Pound, on 12th, which took them at least ten minutes because they were playing and running around on the sidewalk, weaving between pedestrians, and generally behaving the way completely normal people do all the time. After picking up dinner, they got in an SUV and drove off. We felt funny about taking pictures, but everyone else was doing it (a Perez Hilton reader got video), and that basically seemed like the whole idea behind whatever it was they were doing anyway. At no point did Tom recognize us as the author of this, thankfully. Below, three reasons why we'd make a crappy paparazzo.

Giorgio Armani on Retiring: He’s Not

Giorgio Armani.
Photo: WireImage

Giorgio Armani wants to make things clear: He's not retiring anytime soon. In a recent interview with Il Sole, the legend noted that he doesn't have an heir lined up — which pretty much halts any exiting process. And from the sound of it, he isn't jumping into that risky water anytime soon:

"The founder is linked to the brand and represents its style. When it comes to replacing the founder there is always a doubt as to whether to change the style. The young designers have all the talent that is needed, but in a system made up of only 'untouchable icons' that cut off all oxygen, you can also die."

Grim much? But Armani knows it's a tricky balance. Sure, as the epicenter of a $100-billion business, Armani knows stepping down could have incredible impact on the brand. But ultimately, the generational torch must pass on someday. Now it's only a matter of when. So, when?

This Halloween, Stay Safe, Stay Drunk, and Stay Puft

Photo: istolethetv's Flickr

It's that time of year again! That time when delis begin selling pumpkins, Duane Reade becomes carpeted with heaps of discarded costumes in plastic bags, and legions of girls start psyching themselves up to wear skimpy nurse costumes in 37-degree weather. But best of all, it's the time of year for costumed-puppy parades! This weekend saw the first handful, and Flickr user istolethetv snapped some priceless pics from Carl Schurz Park. Above, a bulldog who probably was hoping for the most harmless costume. Something he loved from his childhood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy him!

Aw, now come on. Is there anything cuter than that? No, seriously, name one thing.

The first installment of Brooklyn real-estate blog Brownstoner's "Fifty Most Influential People in Brooklyn" countdown this week, numbers 50 to 41, includes folks like the developers behind Richard Meier's massive, glassy One Prospect Park condo; Jim Mamary, who opens trendy restaurants in hoods as they're gentrifying (Patios on Smith Street, Enduros in Prospect-Lefferts); and Frank Gehry, starchitect of the very controversial, very stalled Atlantic Yards complex. The reader feedback is already promising: "Frank Gehry is a loser," says the first comment. Trenchant! [Brownstoner]

Louis Vuitton Wins $3.5 Million in Counterfeit Suit

Photo: Courtesy of Louis Vuitton

It's another courtroom win for Louis Vuitton! A judge awarded the house $3.5 million in a copyright-infringement case this month. Louis filed the suit against interrelated companies LY USA, Inc., Coco USA, Inc., and Marco Leather Goods, Ltd., in November 2006. Calling the businesses "notorious counterfeiters," Louis took issue with the defendants' registration of an "LY" logo that looked like its own "LV" logo. Their handbags were also blatant knockoffs. The defendants plan to appeal. [WWD]

Newspapers Skeptical on Paterson Aide’s ‘I Was Too Sad to Pay Taxes’ Line

Over the weekend, the Post reported that the governor's chief of staff (and former JFK-marrying Jesuit priest), Charles O'Byrne, was using a history of depression to explain years of failure to pay his taxes. Then the paper uncovered thousands in donations that he made to other political causes, indicating that he wasn't too crazy to sign checks. Now the Times has looked into the matter, and learned that Paterson knew about the tax problem, but had no idea (and still doesn't) when he stopped paying. Now that O'Byrne is paying $200,000 in back taxes and fees, we've all learned a lesson — depression can hurt your family and friends, but in the end, it doesn't hurt the IRS. [NYP]

Lindsey Buckingham Tears Up, Plays Guitar With One Hand

Photo: Michael Meyer

Lindsey Buckingham is a certain type of Californian. Only seven years younger than Brian Wilson, he never hit the bloat phase, physically or musically. Now 59, he still sports sunken cheekbones and skinny jeans. Wearing a tight, black leather jacket last night at the Nokia, he resembled a louche Roman oracle. His music, particularly his fingerpicking guitar playing, has always been tightly wound, a neurotic style rooted in California’s cocaine-addled seventies. It has never packed the joy of the Beach Boys: Wilson’s orchestral masterpiece is the ecstatic "Good Vibrations;" Buckingham produced the beautiful but accusatory "Tusk."

Bliss eluded Buckingham well into his forties. He brooded over pressure from his occasionally insolvent Fleetwood Mac bandmates to give his best songs to them. His always-interesting, but weak-selling, solo projects were pushed back repeatedly. But that’s all over now. Buckingham is now married with three children. (They're prominently featured in the, yes, joyful video for “It Was You.”) He’s released two excellent solo records in two years, Under the Skin, and the new Gift of the Screws. Last night, he played about half his set from the two albums, tossing just enough Mac hits into the mix to keep the wolves at bay. The new songs center on his ethereal guitar playing and late-in-life serenity. Unlike most "happy" rockers, though, Buckingham has plenty of angst still in the tank. About halfway through the show, he launched into a monologue about the difference between his "big machine" work with Fleetwood Mac and "smaller machine" solo career. He discussed the left brain and the right brain, and the concept of esoterica. This brought a whoop from a fan. Buckingham grinned: "Yeah esoterica!"

Not that he left his arena-rock roots completely behind. His guitar playing ventured into the show-offy — at one point he played with just one hand — and whoever came up with the idea of a five-minute drum solo featuring the drummer playing his head like a coconut needs to be checked back into rehab. Still, Buckingham seemed grateful for the opportunity to play his songs without worrying about Stevie, Christie, John, or Mick. He closed with "Time Precious Time" from Gift of Screws, a lamentation about patience and wasted moments, and perhaps a nod to not being able to watch kids fathered in your fifties grow into adulthood. His guitar playing seemed to disappear into itself. This was the last night of his tour, and by the end of the song Buckingham had tears in his eyes. He mouthed the last word of the song — "remember" — smiled, and walked off into the darkness.

Crotch-Grabbing Hermès Heir to Fly Again

Hermès, known for his work with les sacs.
Photo: Patrick McMullan

Last week, he drunkenly grabbed a pilot by the crotch during an altercation on an Air France flight from Paris to JFK, then spent the rest of the flight handcuffed, shackled, and tied to his seat, blabbering incoherently. Today, Hermès heir Mathias Guerrand-Hermès asked a federal judge in Brooklyn if he could use his passport while awaiting trial. Though surrendering one's passport is a standard bail term for foreign nationals, rarely does it so precisely fit the (alleged!) crime.

Magistrate Judge Roanne L. Mann nonetheless agreed to allow Guerrand-Hermès to travel to Paris and Geneva on business, though she required him to post an additional $1 million in cash (ball insurance?) and to get prior approval before each trip. Three attorneys from Bracewell & Giuliani appeared on Guerrand-Hermès’s behalf, notwithstanding that the prosecution had already consented to the deal.

Flanked by his attorneys on the way out of court, Guerrand-Hermès declined to answer questions, including whether he intended to try out a new airline.

Good-bye, ‘Entourage’ — Hello, ‘Californication’!

Photo: Courtesy Showtime

Having renounced Entourage, we're now free to recap a far less guilty pleasure: Californication! Real-life sex addict David Duchovny plays Hank Moody, a foul-mouthed, promiscuous, drunken brawler — who really loves his daughter and her mother. But can he live up to their love? The fourth episode of season two finds our antihero once again drowning in sin and seeking grace. Herewith: family versus fornication.

Family
A reunited Hank and Karen need to prep for a dinner party, but all Hank has done is scatter rose petals on the patio. He re-proposes to Karen, with typical Moody élan: "I want to spend the rest of my life annoying the shit out of you ... I'm so wet right now, are you?"

Karen is apparently not feeling this. And Hank's distracted by her 16-year-old almost-stepdaughter Mia, who he screwed last season before realizing who — and how young — she was. Also, something about Guitar Hero, and the vetting of a date for his daughter.

Fornication
The party explodes that brief bit of familial bliss. Hank's agent, Charlie, and his waxer wife, Marcy, show up high on ecstasy and unable to keep their hands off each other — or the other guests. Ashby brings some coke; newly responsible Hank confiscates it and dumps it down the toilet, but inexplicably pauses to snort some of it himself — and gets caught by Karen. He redeems himself a little by saving Ashby's life with an EpiPen after the producer accidentally picks up some sashimi via his date's mouth, but there's no recovering from the revelation that Sonja's probably pregnant with Hank's baby. The news is, of course, broken by naughty Mia: "So I'm just doing a little mental math over here, but correct me if I'm wrong: Hank could be the father of your child since you bumped uglies that night at my father's house."

Back on the patio at the end of the night, Karen announces that she's not marrying Hank. It's not because he knocked up her friend when they were split up, just because they are — he is? — one big mistake. "It was nice while it lasted," Becca tells dad. The soundtrack to their teary goodbyes is "Freebird": "Lord help me, I can't change."

Meet the New Girl: Kendra Spears

Kendra Spears (Ford Models) at Lanvin.
Photo: Imaxtree

Last year, 20-year-old Kendra Spears was an average teenager. But then she won Ford Models' Myspace.com contest and a chance at winning a $100,000 modeling contract with the venerable agency. Korean model Hyoni Kang snagged that prize, but Spears is doing more than fine without it. New York casting directors might have found the 5'10" beauty with a Cindy Crawford-esque mole a little too green for the runway last month, but casting directors in Milan and Paris disagreed, and Spears walked for Gucci, Hermès, and Valentino. Now, the Portland State University student has been busy with shoots for Dazed & Confused, Italian Marie Claire, and BCBG's ad campaign. If her career continues at this pace, that mole might not be the only way she channels Cindy.

Loulou de la Falaise Had Imaginary Friends

Yves Saint Laurent's former muse Loulou de la Falaise's holiday collection launches on the Home Shopping Network today. She says of her inspiration, "This is a kind of Scottish, gothic duchess influence. It comes from memories of my childhood and things like that. Everything here has a wolf on it. That’s my symbol, the wolf, because I’m called Loulou and that means wolf wolf. It’s a very romantic animal. When I was a kid and afraid of things, in my daydreams and night dreams I would make friends with things that most frightened me. I would make friends with the wolf and the wolf would protect me." We Doubt Gisele and Tom Brady Would Wed at Tavern on the Green

Tom and Gisele, keeping it casual, as usual.
Photo: Getty Images

We wouldn't be shocked if Gisele Bündchen finally married Tom Brady. We figured they might be considering co-habitation after they both put their New York apartments on the market, so why not slap on some rings and sign a few papers too, right? The New York Post is reporting that the ridiculously good-looking couple is planning a wedding reception at Tavern on the Green. Oh, is that so? We always imagined Gisele's wedding would take place on some random private island, where no paparazzi could find her, with an unassuming ceremony on the beach. The kind of thing where she walks down the aisle barefoot and doesn't have bridesmaids, and only invites close friends and family, which naturally includes a handful of fashion superstars like John Galliano or Donatella Versace, and a reporter from Vogue, who dance the night away to drum-circle music by the light of elegant tiki torches. Not some hokey thing at Tavern on the Green with gaudy chandeliers and a million tourists from the Midwest lollygagging outside. Yes, this is something we've thought about frequently, so pity us.
