Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 18 Oct 2008 | 1:43 pm "Himesh's version of Monty will shock the audiences for sure" - Satish KaushikHe is a man with multiple talents and experience. Besides acting, he produces, directs, and writes films as well. We are talking about the versatile actor cum director Satish Kaushik who is all excited as his directorial venture Karzzzz is released this week. Seeing Himesh Reshammiya in the shoes of Rishi Kapoor must indeed have been a challenge but Satish Kaushik was never among the ones who'd run away from challenges. The movie as per the earlier reviews has been stunning. But mass reaction- one will just have to wait. In the meantime, Bollywood Hungama caught up with Satish Kaushik to find out something more about Karzzzz with the 4 'z' and his experience with Himesh Reshammiya. So sit back and enjoy. Satishji, for starters, with Karzzzz being just released, are you nervous or super excited? I am very much excited because Karzzzz is one film that reminds me of my young days, when I used to be a 'dreamer'. Those were the days when I was just dreaming of turning into a filmmaker. In other words, I would like to say that Karzzzz is my tribute to 'that' era of films. For me, this film is more like representing the eighties era and bringing it to the era of the 2000's! For me, Karzzzz is more like representing the eighties era and bringing it to the era of the 2000's! What made you choose on the remake of the original Karz? The concept of remake was something that had already been decided by Bhushan Kumar and Himesh. I was contacted later. When they told me the story, I became too excited. I was also very much aware of the fact that it is going to be a 'big' film, for the very reason that it was coming from the stable of Bhushan Kumar and T-Series! Also that, Himesh hummed some tunes to me from the film, which got me further more excited. With all of this going, how could I say no to the remake of the original Karz! What's your opinion about Himesh's acting skills? Have you seen him in his debut film Aap Kaa Surroor? Of course, I have seen Aap Kaa Surroor and I simply loved him in the film. I have also seen him perform on stage and one needs to give it to him for such a massive fan following! The kind of music that he had given in Aap Kaa Surroor was simply phenomenal. After I saw the film, I was totally floored by his screen presence. He has got very dreamy and lost eyes complemented with a very sweet smile. Overall, he is a very wonderful person. As far as his acting skills are concerned, I would give him a 10 on 10. For Himesh is one person, who is passionate about whatever he does. Since I have dealt in theatre before, I was tad sure that I will be able to extract nothing but the best out of this man! Now that Karzzzz is complete, I can very confidently say that the whole 'confusion' about Himesh being an actor or a non-actor will be laid to rest! His performance in Karzzzz is totally FANTASTIC! Now that Karzzzz is complete, I can very confidently say that the whole 'confusion' about Himesh being an actor or a non-actor will be laid to rest! Do you think that the audiences will accept Himesh as Monty, a name that has by now become a benchmark of sorts, courtesy the brilliant portrayal by Rishi Kapoor in the original? I am sure that the comparison that you are talking will be made by only those who have seen the original Karz before. At the same time, I am also confident that the 'Generation Next' will surely accept Himesh as Monty, as he has portrayed the role so convincingly and effectively. As far as the 'others' are concerned, I am sure that they too will accept Himesh as Monty. That's the kind of confidence, faith and conviction that I have in him, which is something that you too will agree to when you see my film. Having said all this let me also tell you in the same breath that an Original will always remain an Original! I am also confident that the 'Generation Next' will surely accept Himesh as Monty Karzzzzis set in modern times. So, in what way is it different from the original Karz, besides the four 'Z's in the title that is? I can explain this with the example of the Broadway musicals, where the same character is portrayed by different actors. Ours is also almost on the same lines. Closer home, the same 'pattern' is applied in theatre dramas also. I can confidently vouch for this statement as I personally hail from a theatre background. Coming back to Karzzzz, Himesh has portrayed the role of Monty in a different manner. Whenever I make a remake of a certain film, then, I always keep in mind to 'adapt' the original version in my film and not merely remake it! My film Karzzzz doesn't spoil the soul and the structure of the original Karz. Besides everything, let me also tell you I have not taken the original Karz to make it a better version in the form of Karzzzz. I have made my film, in a very 'student-like' approach, and I feel that, through Karzzzz, I have given the original Karz a fitting tribute that it rightly deserves. In one of his recent interviews, Himesh admitted that Ranbir Kapoor would have been a better choice for Monty's role and also that he would have ensured the film's Box Office success? Do you agree with him? I always believe that any actor can do any role. Having said that, I would also like to add that the Himesh's 'version' of Monty would shock the audience for sure. The general mentality is that when you expect certain things out of a certain actor, and when that actor delivers something that was not expected of him, it is translated into a certain amount of shock value. Himesh, in the role of Monty is one such shock value experience. As far as his statement about Ranbir is concerned, all I can say is that it's indeed very sweet on behalf of Himesh to have said that. But, as far as I am concerned, I will still stick on to Himesh as my choice for the role of Monty. Himesh's 'version' of Monty will shock the audiences for sure. It's a universal fact that Himesh is a very religious and superstitious man. Were there any clashes of interest due to that in that terrain? Not at all. Himesh and I were always on the same wavelength. And I have known him for quite a long time. By now, we know each other's working pattern. Himesh is someone whom I would call as a 'Directors actor'. How was the overall 'Himesh Reshammiya' experience? Hailing from a theatre background, the 'actor' in me was taught (during my struggling days) that, for an actor, 'listening power' should be more important than the 'verbal power'. According to me, a good actor is someone who listens more than he speaks. And I found this quality in Himesh. He was totally open to my way of direction. He is someone whom I would call as a 'Directors actor'. Also it's a sheer delight to even listen to him. He knows all the ups, lows, pauses, modulations and the stresses of every sentence. The overall 'Himesh Reshammiya' was simply fabulous! Urmila as Kamini is simply outstanding in Karzzzz What made you cast Urmila opposite him? Urmila was always my first choice. She has time and again proved herself as a path-breaking actress in every film. I know her since her Masoom days, wherein she played the lead. I just couldn't think of anyone besides Urmila for the role of 'Kamini'. And trust me; Urmila as 'Kamini' is simply outstanding in the film. Satishji, having introduced actors like Tabu, Tusshar Kapoor, Bhumika Chawla, and now Shweta Kumar. What do you have to say about Shweta? Do you feel that she has the potential to make it big? I take it as my responsibility when any newcomer comes to me. And I feel really nice connecting with them. I always treat my seasoned actors on a huge platform. And as far as the newcomers are concerned, I have the added advantage of training and moulding them in the best of their capacity and not by thrusting myself and my style on them! As far as Shweta is concerned, I think that she has a huge potential to make it big as an actress. She is very cool, casual and tad comfortable in front of the camera. Apparently, Simi Garewal, who played 'Kamini' in the original Karz, had commented that Sushmita Sen, not Urmila, was more suited for the remake. What's your comment on the same? As I always said, any actor can play any role. If she (Simi) had said so, I respect her statement. But I will still stick on to Urmila as she is someone who matches the persona of Himesh to the 'T'! Rishiji also attested the music of Himesh in Karzzzz and also told him that he deserved a pat on his back for making such a wonderful score. Has the 'original' Monty, Rishi Kapoor, seen Karzzzz? What were his comments on the same? I still have to show it to him. But he is a very dear friend and moreover a fantastic person. When we started the film, it was really sweet and endearing on the part of Subhashji and Rishiji to wish us good luck. Rishiji also attested the music of Himesh in Karzzzz and also told him that he deserved a pat on his back for making such a wonderful score.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Oct 2008 | 1:14 pm Aamir Khan to star in Kishore Kumar’s biopic - Zee News
Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 18 Oct 2008 | 12:21 pm Himesh - The common man's Hero finds acceptanceThe common man has arrived. And he has done that with a style. Although he has played his role without any 'hero-giri' per se, Himesh Reshammiya has managed to create strength for himself by playing to the gallery, which has led to Karzzzz to be much more than just a watchable affair. Reason? More than the excitement of watching how Satish Kaushik has remade the film, the fun lies in seeing how Himesh does in his second outing for the big screen. Does he do any better than Aap Kaa Surroor? Does he look better without his cap on? Can he carry a film entirely on his shoulder? How does he encounter Urmila's character of Kamini? And more than anything else, can he get the action, emotion, drama and romance right - everything which makes for a quintessential hero? Well, yes, he gets it right and yet again, without resorting to even attempting to be a hero. He plays his calling card right, that of an average common man, who has his moments of anxiety, the helplessness of being betrayed by his love, the sheer hopelessness of seeing death yet again in the second 'janam'. And this is what makes Himesh's Monty identifiable. Of course as a film one has to isolate Karzzzz from Karz in the same way Shah Rukh Khan's Don - The Chase Begins Again had to be looked at differently from Amitabh Bachchan's Don. Comparison never helps because one tends to loose objectivity. And by the way, this is not to say that in a stand alone mode, Satish Kaushik's reincarnation version is a classic in the making. It is not. In fact it isn't even a film, which would be remembered say, 10 years down the line. However, it is a film, which would be talked about in the current times at the least. And that would be for the sheer effort and confidence which has been put in the film by the makers and the lead actors Himesh and Urmila. Not that it would make you go wow from start to finish. It gathers a steady momentum with the finale being the pick of the lot. But more about it later. Karzzzz in fact starts off reasonably ok (Dino-Urmila interaction is short and nice), dips pace a little (too many songs but aiming right for the gallery - no wonder single screens and interiors of India would have their hands full) and picks up towards the interval point. Himesh-Urmila interaction for the first time is rocking and peaks the drama big time. In fact, this is where Himesh gets complete audience's attention and you forget you are seeing a composer / singer turned actor on screen. He 'acts' as an 'actor' should and for someone who is just two films old, it is not a bad deal at all. Second half is decent to begin with and keeps picking on pace till the penultimate 25 minutes completely make Karzzzz a winner. The film has it's moments before that too, especially when Urmila realizes for the first time that Monty is Ravi Varma. The number 'Loot Jaaon' comes at a dramatic juncture and from this point on there is no looking back. What really turns out to be knockout is the phase of the movie in and around 'Ik Haseena Thi'. Drama, emotion, action, thrills - all are presented in just the right mixture to make Karzzzz a sumptuous meal. Karzzzz is, what you call in typical Bollywood parlance, a timepass 'masala' flick. An unpretentious affair which doesn't even aim at bringing it's neck out and saying - 'Hey, look at me, am I not really smart'. Instead, it says, 'Come, have fun, and go home entertained.' It is this 'entertainment' quotient, which makes Karzzzz an engrossing watch.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Oct 2008 | 11:38 am Cine fraternity leaves for Rameswaram - Galatta.com

Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 18 Oct 2008 | 11:01 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about Shoot On SightIn this season of prolonged terrorism both on and off -screen, here comes this bit of cold yet compelling candor on film. Shoot On Sight is a work that works as a wake-up call for those slumbering in their bourgeois belief that terrorism is as far away from home as Osama Bin Laden is from America. It's a frightening piece of fiction laced with a fair amount of warmth and affection that lulls us into a false sense of wellbeing. In essence, the plot takes us back to the domesticated terrorism of Alan Pakula's The Devil's Own, or more recently Subhash Ghai's Black And White where a young wide-eyed seemingly un-spoilt guest in the house turns out to be a closet-terrorism. Where Shoot On Sight scores is in laying out the blueprint for global terrorism through characters who appear real in words, body language and political ideology. Jagmohan Mundhra has earlier balanced a social cause with a message in Provoked. Here the 'thrill' element emanates far more effortlessly from the characters and their predicament, partly because the theme of terrorism renders itself far dramatically to a cinematic treatment than domestic violence. London is shot by cinematographer Madhu Ambat with all its inherent buzz and blemishes without fuss or rush. The flow of adrenaline as the British cops zero- in on their distinguished Pakistani colleague's nephew as a terrorist is rather reined-in than rushed. This isn't a film that's in a hurry to get there. But it knows how to value the audiences' time. And this is where Shoot On Sight scores the optimum impact. Mundhra revels in generous levels of understatement most of the time. Whether showing the fanaticism in the mosque (Om Puri, aptly extravagant) or the dilemma of the cop's Pakistan-British daughter whose boyfriend wants to go 'all the way' (and come fast)...Mundhra packs it all into the simmering cultural cauldron with dexterity and dignity. While on the whole the characters in the cop- protagonist Tariq Ali's home and workplace come to life with vigorous fluency, some portions of the storytelling fall flat. Naseer's assistant played by Laila Rouass (is there a stifled sexual attraction here?) comes to a soggy end in a river with the suddenness of a video-game with its socket pulled out. The hastily - executed climax in a shopping mall where Tariq Ali's nephew is shot down with a sweeping-under-the-carpet haste, is a screaming shame. What happened?! Mostly, Mundhra uses economy of expression to great effect. Sometimes just one or two scenes are enough to establish the camaraderie between characters creating a crisscross of inter-relations with disconcerting deftness. There's just one intimate interlude (in the kitchen at the start) between the Pakistani cop Naseer and his British wife played Greta Scacchi. It's enough to show the enduring empathy between the couple. The rift that seeps into their marriage because of the closet-terrorist nephew's presence in their house is again represented in a flash of anger and indignation where Naseer accuses Scacchi of discrimination. A culturally defining moment that stays with you after the last bang-bang. A major part of the film's success goes to the actors. Every player gora or brown gets into the skin of the character. Om Puri as a radical mullah, Gulshan Grover as Naseer's butcher-friend, and the British actors who play Naseer's colleagues at the precinct...they all add a wealth of credibility to Mundhra's tale of malevolence in a city that's outwardly a haven for healing. Debutant Mikaal Zulfikar as the Pakistani nephew in uncle Naseer's domain, gives a comfortably - defined performance. Mikaal gets the point early in the narrative when on arrival from Pakistan in London, driving from the airport he gets to know his English Chachi has not converted to Islam. Watch the young actor's subtle shift of expression from easy grace to disgust and disapprovalâ¦it's frightening to see because it reflects the reality about how young people all over the world are converted to extremist causes. What finally gives Shoot On Sight a compelling edge beyond the expected, making it more than just a pantomime of post-terrorism mores, is Naseeruddin Shah. What an actor! What a 'non-performance'. As always, Naseer merges into the character pitching the emotions at a level where they appear to be thought of on the spot and certainly not for the sake of a camera. Domestic scenes and details served up in delicious vignettes provide a back projection to Naseer's complex character. Naseer glides effortlessly with his character as it goes from cultural comfort to fundamentalist isolation. The actor and the character become one. Would Shoot On Sight have worked without Naseeruddin Shah? Would cinema on Nazi excesses or global terrorism be the same without Hitler or Osama Bin Laden ?Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Oct 2008 | 11:01 am Rohit, Rahul get a shoe-bite at WIFW

Jha speaks about KarzzzzThis is it. 'Indiana Joan' & 'The Temple Of Dhoom Macha-oing dhoom' in motions of staged hysteria is Himesh Reshammiya without his trademark cap but with so much hair you wonder if it's there to tear after you go through of 2 ½ hours of drama, nakhra, hysteria and dhamaal. Our Indiana Joan is Urmila Matondkar reprising Simi Garewal's villainous gold digger's act with a vengeance. She not only creates dhoom, she also crashes into a temple of doom (literally) before being declared dead by the script. RIP. Yup, now we know what the blurbs mean by 'Vengeance Is Back'. Many of Urmila's chic gowns capture her in backless splendor. Whether matching steps with the roke star (array yaar, koi to issey roko!) or pulling out all stops to mow her reborn lover-boy (Dino Morea turns into Himesh Reshammiya after the first 15 minutes) down with her zooming airplane (it was just a car in the original for poor Simi)â¦Urmila is mean and seductive, in kill-kill measures. We don't see much chemistry off the dance floor between apna Himeshbhai and our sexy Matondkar. But is anyone really bothered with the telling of the story? And honestly, was the original Karz anything but a kitschy compendium of montages motivated by the theme of reincarnation? If Rishi Kapoor did Monty, Himesh does full Monty. Between the two Montys is a molehill masquerading as a big potboiler. This reincarnation of the blockbuster on reincarnation is a bit of a contradiction in terms. On one hand it's high on production values generating what one would call a cinematic adrenaline that takes audiences into the an exotic embrace. Every stage performance by the roke star is accompanied a bevy of international chorus dancers (mostly female) who prop up Himesh' set pieces and complement his energy level. On the other hand, the drama is distilled by an absence of inner-drawn energy. As an actor, Himesh has his limitations, which come bubbling to the surface in the long monologues about punar janam, present tense, and past mostly imperfect. Rishi Kapoor, where art thou? To his credit Himesh takes you beyond the performance. He has a disarming simplicity bordering on naivete to back up his claims to stardom. The actor is honest. But he connects with his audience. And the man playing the character is aware he isn't trying to achieve an award-winning level in his performance. Having got that in place, Himesh just has himself a ball. His enjoyment in the songs and dances is sometimes contagious, sometime amusing, never dull, never exasperating. As for the narrative, it doesn't seem to believe in an updated progress report. Like a recalling of a past life, Satish Kaushik's seems frozen in the 1970's. The contemporized props and locations hardly help wipe out the feeling of watching a film that belongs to another time zone, far beyond the theme of reincarnation. The big confrontation sequence where Kamini (Matondkar) breaks down and confesses to having killed 'Monty The Rock Star', is staged in a sprawling set representing the outer flank of a mansion. Who lies what beneath the exterior? Who cares? If you treat Karzzzz as an ongoing Chitrahaar of Himesh's songs strung together by a bristling bead of sweaty players you just might end up enjoying this kitschy homage to a potboiler that boasted of great songs and a wonderful central performance. Himesh Reshammiya aims for the same. No harm in being ambitious.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Oct 2008 | 10:28 am 'Payana' a feel-good romantic storyFilm: 'Payana'; Director: Kiran Govi; Cast: Ravishankar, Ramaneethu, Sharath Babu; Rating: **1/2.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 18 Oct 2008 | 10:02 am Pooja Bedi denies knowledge of film being made on motherBollywood actress turned television celebrity anchor Pooja Bedi has denied any knowledge of a film being made on her mother Protima Bedi.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 18 Oct 2008 | 10:02 am Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang: Review - MSN India

Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 17 Oct 2008 | 5:18 pm The day when Akshay Kumar cried!Click here to watch the video A director had once told her that she cannot act. But years later, Hema Malini came to be known as the 'Dream Girl' of Bollywood. A composer once told him that he could never become a singer. But Yeshudas went on to become a legendary singer. Similarly, some people from the ad world told him that he will never find success, but today he is known as the 'Khiladi of Bollywood'. Yes, we are talking about none other than Akshay Kumar. Akki is the special guest in this week's episode of Sajid Khan's television show, 'Sajid's Superstars'. The ever so charming and handsome Akki enters with a bang on the show and well, falls on his face (like we don't know that was a farce). Nonetheless, Sajid in his usual manner digs out facts about Akshay's struggling days. He asks Akshay, "How did you get your first break?" To which Akshay replies, "I remember I was chosen to go to Bangalore to do an ad. I was told to come to the airport at 5:30 and was signed for Rs. 11,000, which at that time was a big amount." Akshay confesses that he was so happy about getting this assignment that he went and raved about it to his parents and sister. "It was an opportunity of a lifetime for me. I was very excited," he states. But things were not destined to work out the way Akshay had planned. Continues Kumar, "Suddenly early morning next day, I got a call asking, 'kahan hai tu bewakoof⦠we are all waiting at the airport. Where are you?' Actually, there was some confusion. They told me to report at the airport at 5:30 in the morning and I misunderstood it. I thought I had to reach there in the evening." But what happened after that made the superstar cry. "They told me that people like me who are so unprofessional in life can never make it big. I cried a lot, all my dreams were shattered," says Akshay. However, probably that one comment made all the difference in Akshay's life, coz today; he is known to be one of the most professional actors in the industry. No wonder, he has success kissing his feet.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 Oct 2008 | 5:01 pm Amitabh Bachchan discharged from Lilavati hospitalBollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who was admitted to Lilavati Hospital last Saturday following complaints of abdominal pain, was discharged today. Firstly, it was her father-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan, who took ill on his birthday, and got admitted in Lilavati Hospital. No sooner did he step on the path to recovery; Aishwarya's father, Krishna Raj Rai fell ill and was immediately admitted at Hinduja Hospital. Sources say that he had only gone there as a part of his routine check up, but was admitted immediately after that. One really feels sorry for Aishwarya during this testing time. We, at Bollywood Hungama, sincerely pray for the quick recovery of both the gentlemen.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 17 Oct 2008 | 12:44 pm
