Yash Raj Films' New York is being shot in Philadelphia

Residents of Philadelphia were in for a surprise last weekend when they saw helicopters with FBI written across them zooming above the PNC Bank Building. What's more there were even quite a few SWAT officers who made a dramatic entry, suspending themselves from the aircraft carrying rifles. Just as localites began to worry if there was a panic situation on hand, did they see a film crew with cameras et al shooting this whole scenario. This was not any hostage attack or terrorist threat but the shooting of Yash Raj Films' upcoming project New York (working title) which was in progress in the busy and central area of Philadelphia. The film's stars, namely John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh, were present as the crew along with director Kabir Khan filmed some action scenes in and around the PNC Bank Building. While New York has been quite a prominent feature of many a Bollywood films, this was a relatively new experience for the residents of Philadelphia who after initially getting a trifle scared seemed to enjoy the most of this Bollywood film shoot.

"Fashion has been hyped so much that the expectations are high" - Arjan Bajwa

Arjan Bajwa, the lead hero of Fashion, was in for a surprise on his recent visit to Delhi. Though he was aware that there is a widespread awareness and curiosity built up around his upcoming film, he didn't have a clue that quite a few politicians too were eagerly awaiting it's release. "I was paying a courtesy call to a few people from the political world and was chatting about anything but movies. Suddenly the talk shifted to Fashion and I was pleasantly surprised to find that people there too are waiting to have a dekko at the film. I guess they know the kind of reputation that Madhur Sir carries as a film maker and his recent National Award for Traffic Signal has only added on to people at the highest level being aware about his work", details Arjan Bajwa who was recently seen in Summer 2007. Not many are aware that if not an actor, Arjan Bajwa may well have been the blue eyed boy of politics. This is because he is the son of Late S.S.Bajwa, the BJP ex-Deputy Mayor of Delhi. "I am very much in touch with people with whom dad had worked with over the years. They are all like family and treat me as their son. When I meet them, discussions could be anything under the sun ranging from life to general to politics and even movies," says Arjan. Apparently politicians like Sushma Swaraj and Venkaiah Naidu amongst others have shown a keen interest in Fashion. Do such huge expectations make him feel nervous? "Of course they do", Arjan is prompt to reply, "The film has been hyped so much over the year gone by and everyone is expecting nothing but the best from it. It is surreal to hear people calling it a sure-shot success even though it hasn't been shown to anyone. While working, you don't think about the hype and buzz your film would generate; you just do plain and simple work." "Since the time promos have been air, I have been inundated with queries around the film. Now I can't wait for 29th October, the day when the film releases. The suspense around public response to the film has been killing. I hope the film gives much more than what they have been looking for and surpasses their expectations", concludes Arjan on a hopeful note.

Bollywood has Rs 1 bn riding on Big B

About Rs 1 billion is riding on the shoulders of Bollywood mega star Amitabh Bachchan, who is currently recuperating in a hospital after he complained of abdominal pain on his 66th birthday on Saturday. The spokesperson of the Lilavati Hospital, Mohan Rajan's announcement about Amitabh's speedy recovery might have warmed the hearts of his fans, but the producers of his under-production movies are still not counting their blessings for obvious reasons. Bachchan, who was in the midst of his 66th birthday celebrations at his bungalow Pratiksha in Juhu, was rushed to the Nanavati Hospital early on Saturday afternoon after complaining of abdominal pain and breathlessness.

"There wasn't a single element in Contract to grab the viewer's attention" - Ram ...

Ram Gopal Varma gets candid with Subhash K Jha. Look what Phoonk has started. Another film on the supernatural 1920 is a success. Aren't you responsible for promoting blind faith? I don't think cinema influences audiences' behaviour. People being possessed by the devil was a belief that has existed long before cinema came into being. Doesn't cinema capture slices of life? If movies influenced people, after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, the joint-family system should've come into vogue in a big way. But you're endorsing supernaturalism. Isn't that against the spirit of progress? People in our country have space in their minds for the supernatural and rational thoughts. Even the most rational mind believes in the evil eye. When an Indian NASA scientist goes abroad, his mother feeds him dahi, breaks a coconut for his journey. Science and the supernatural beliefs co-exist. What happens in Phoonk happens all the time. Isn't 1920 riding on the success of Phoonk? I've no idea. I haven't seen 1920. Horror is a neglected genre in India. In Japan, Thailand and Korea, horror is the mainstay of their cinema. But we in this country blindly ape western trends. Use universal emotions. They'll never fail. We're always wondering whether we should've songs, or whether we should look like American films. Also in horror, the aura is created mainly through the imagination and the performances and that's tough. Besides I don't make horror films. They rely on gore. I hate that. I make scary films. These play with the audiences' imagination. If movies influenced people, after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, the joint-family system should've come into vogue in a big way So you are making Phoonk 2? I am definitely making Phoonk 2. The main star is the crow. It carries the story forward. The sequel goes back to the same family. But with additional characters. It will start with Zakir Husain's character being killed by the spirit of the women Ashwini Kalsekar who practiced black voodoo. The Kannada actor Sudeep had his voice dubbed for Phoonk. He's learning Hindi intensely for the sequel so he can speak his own lines. Are you still dazed by the success of Phoonk? What makes the audience want to watch a film is a mystery. Everyone thought Rock On would've a very limited appeal. Nobody knows what works. Flops have happened to me before. So have hits. I just need to make films, As far as I'm concerned Phoonk is over. I've no patience with post-mortems. Aren't you enjoying the success of Phoonk? I enjoy making films. Not throwing parties and drinking champagne. And I value constructive criticism more than praise. We're always wondering whether we should've songs, or whether we should look like American films Wouldn't you have preferred to produce Phoonk yourself? I've never produced a film in my life. I've always collaborated with big production houses. I've been a producer by default. I was impressed by the producers of Phoonk. They're the best company I've worked with. They spent an unlimited amount on the publicity and marketing. Were you confused when Phoonk clicked so quickly after Contract flopped? It happens all the time in the entertainment business. Take my Aag. It had huge stars. Everyone was shocked by its low opening. Everyone thought Sholay would bring the audiences in. I now realize the interest level of audience between 13 and 30 in Sholay was very low. Prashant Raj who starred in Aag hadn't seen Sholay. It's a far more popular film inside the film industry than with the young audience. If all the people who said Aag was a bad film had seen it, it'd have been a super-hit. You had 3 releases in two months as director. Aren't you overdoing it? I didn't make these films in two months, did I? It's just that they were released one after another. The release of Sarkar Raj was delayed. I had free time on hands. Since the only thing I do is make films and since I had the scripts of Contract and Phoonk ready, I decided to make these films. Didn't this crowd bother you? I'm totally convinced that audiences don't care about the director's name in the credit titles. If they did, Contract would've taken an opening after the success of Sarkar Raj and after Contract, Phoonk should've been boycotted. I don't think Ram Gopal Varma was the issue at all. At best a brand director creates interest in a project. But it doesn't determine how many people will watch that film. Weren't you shocked by the low opening of Contract? Maybe the subject matter didn't interest the audience. It's very difficult to read the audiences' state of mind and make films accordingly. Maybe it's the subject matter and the promos that do the trick. Phoonk was very clear on one thing. It was catering to a very basic emotion-fear. I quite expected the success. The genre has a clear appeal. But you were far more excited about your underworld film Contract than Phook? That's not true. But in hindsight I feel Contract had nothing new to offer the audience. They had gone through the underworld experience many times over. It was neither a mind-blowing action film nor an intense drama. There wasn't one single element in Contract to grab the viewers' attentions. Phoonk clearly intended to scare audiences. It gave audiences very straight emotions to experience. And they went for it. I'm totally convinced that audiences don't care about the director's name in the credit titles Why are you constantly attacking media persons on your blog? It's the other way around. It's the media that bashes me all the time. That's because I've a release every 2-3 months. At least I now have a platform to express my thoughts clearly. Eventually my thought-processes have to zero in on individuals. Why do you take offence to critics not liking your films? When I review the reviews, there's personal malice involved. But when someone writes a review without understanding the film I've the right to object. I've the right to an opinion as much as the other person. I feel Contract had nothing new to offer the audience. They had gone through the underworld experience many times over You say one critic blasted your films because you rejected her script? I didn't say that. All I said is, if in spite of all her efforts she can't make one film what is her qualification to blast films day in and day out? I just have conversations on the blog. Many people think you're getting even on your blog with your enemies? How can I get even on my blog? Eventually, people will see my film or not see it regardless of what I write on my blog. There was no fight with Aamir. We haven't met. I'm not doing any film with him. How often do you blog? Whenever I've the time. Maybe once every two days. I now have the chance to talk about the influences that shaped the way I am. See when a journalist puts my thoughts forward he will bring in his own personality. On the blog, it's just me and my thoughts. I'm very fond of the blog. And won't give it up. After Contract are you done with the underworld? I never saw Satya as a beginning, Company as a continuation and Contact a culmination. I was repeatedly saying they're all a different aspect of the underworld. They aren't a trilogy. And I will go back to the underworld if another aspect of it appeals to me. The failure of Contract wasn't a shock. I've had many failures in the past. If I can make another underworld I'll try to make it more interesting. The subject could've been made like Munich or Rambo. I chose to make Contract like Rambo set on a very realistic pattern. It didn't go down well with the audience. Finally you've patched up with Aamir Khan? What patch up? There was no fight. We haven't met. I'm not doing any film with him.

Bollywood wishes Amitabh Bachchan, a speedy recovery

As I get up early morning in London for a few deadlines and try to catch up on the remaining interviews for the day, I get an urgent message from one of my colleagues in Mumbai saying that Mr Amitabh Bachchan has been hospitalised on his 66th birthday. As I start sipping the hot ginger tea from my mug, my hands start to get cold. I leave my tea unattended and go to the wash room to splash some cold water on my face. Then I switch on my television and still no news. It was 8.30am GMT. Now that was pretty bizaare. No news on any Indian channels so far. But I just couldn't resist myself. I pick up my mobile in sheer anxiety and call Apoorva Lakhia, who is very close to the Bachchan family. I get the news. It's the truth, not that I did not trust my colleague but still wanted to clear the air. Big B's 66th birthday and he gets hospitalised. But the gift he gets on this particular day will always remain special - Prayers, prayers and more prayers from millions of Amitji's well wishers. So as the fans pray for his speedy recovery, I try getting some more wishes from his very own colleagues from the world of Bollywood. This is what they had to say: Apoorva Lakhia: "My message to Mr Bachchan is - A very very Happy Birthday and lots more to come. As far as the film industry is concerned, he is the industry in itself and I think he has played a very prominent part in making the Indian cinema known to the world. Hope he gets well soon because we've got the whole industry in the hospital. So can't really work you see". Madhur Bhandarkar: "I am a bit disturbed and hope he gets well soon and comes back. We will be eagerly awaiting his arrival back to Bollywood". Mugdha Godse - "I am concerned and worried about Big B. I would like to go and meet him at this given point in time. He just needs to take rest right now and my best wishes are there with him". Abbas Mustan - "I am in a state of shock. The entire industry is behind him today and everyday. We wish this pillar of Bollywood a speedy recovery and will pray for him to come back to work soon". Tusshar Kapoor - "I hope and pray that his health gets better. Minissha Lamba - "He is the last living legend that we will have out here in India. I wish him a speedy recovery because I am missing him on the silver screen. We pray that he gets back to business soon". Vidya Malvade - "I wish an extremely speedy recovery. He is one of the most respected and honoured actors we've got in the country today. Everybody wants him to get out of the bed fine and quick. I am sure the doctors will do a good job in getting him out of bed fine and quick". Farhan Akhtar - "I am hopeful and do wish and pray that he is back to good health as soon as possible. He is an icon as far as the face of the Indian Film Industry to the world is concerned and a very special person on those fronts. Everybody near and dear to him are concerned about him and his family. I hope it's not too serious". Manoj Bajpai - "I wish him all the best and may he live for two thousand more years to come. May he get well soon. Whenever a popular figure like him falls ill, it is bound to affect the Indian Film Industry. Today I pray for his good health". Shekhar Kapur - "He has bounced back from so many things that ordinary could not do. So in that respect Mr Amitabh Bachchan is an extra ordinary man and I wish him a speedy recovery. He has got this extra ordinary will power which will recover him soon". Harman Baweja - "Prayers and lots of prayers to him goes out today. Like the rest of the country, I am an ardent fan of Mr Bachchan and wish him good health everyday and for many years to come". Anjori Alagh - "I think he is a great role model for everybody in the industry. I really look up to him personally. Hope he gets well soon, hope he fights it and comes well out of the hospital soon. Amitabh Bachchan is a legend. He pretty much epitomises the Indian Film Industry and thus everybody is worried about him and his health. All his co-stars, colleagues and friends wish that he gets well soon and comes out fit and fine very soon". Jimmy Sheirgill - "I wish him a quick recovery too. I have immense respect for him. I think as far as his films are concerned, he has always been one person who is filled with energy and today I pray that he gets back the same energy which can heal him. He loves working all the time and we want him to get back to what he loves best". Jackie Shroff - "Hope he recovers soon. Everyone goes through some kind of a problem and comes out of it. Mr Bachchan to will be out of it very soon". Gul Panag - "He is an icon of the Indian Film Industry and we all would like to see him back on his feet as soon as possible". Adah Sharma - "I believe one should always be positive. I don't think any of us should panic unnecessarily. He is a legend so naturally when we see him on the television since kids, he becomes a part of our family. So every individual who lives in India feels like they know Mr Bachchan and considers him to be a part of their family. Our prayers will definitely cure him". Arjun Rampal - "It's a terrible thing to happen. He is the most respected face in our industry. Something like this happens on your birthday and that's the last thing you want. Riteish Deshmukh voluntarily takes a backseat

You've heard of actors demanding extra songs and dialogues from their co-stars. But have you ever heard of an actor offering to relinquish songs and dances for the betterment of the film? That's what Riteish Deshmukh did on the sets of Milap Jhaveri's Jaane Kahan Se Aayee Hai last week. On being told he was required to do an elaborately choreographed song sequence Riteish questioned the wisdom and sheer logic of his character breaking into intricate dance steps and offered to let the film's young romantic lead Ruslaan Mumtaz do all the dancing. Disbelieving of the confidence level displayed by his co-star, Ruslaan says, "The choreography by Bosco-Caesar involved a lot of B-Boing which is the hip-hop style of dancing. The girls Jacqueline Fernandes and Sonal Sehgal begged off and were given easier steps. That left only me and Riteish. But Riteish put his foot down. He said, 'How can I dance so well when I play a loser?' And he volunteered to just stand quietly while I danced." Ruslaan is all praise for his co-star. "Not too many actors would be happy without songs and dances just to be in character. Riteish is allowing me to do all the hero-giri because he says I play the filmy hero and therefore I should do all the filmy stuff.

With the kind of association that Anand and Vishal-Shekhar have enjoyed after 'Ta Ra Rum Pum' and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno', it is pretty much expected that the collaboration would continue for many more films to come. None 3 6 Dostana This one takes the biggest jump of the week. Within just a fortnight of its arrival on the stands, 'Dostana' has made a smash entry into the Top-3. For Vishal-Shekhar, it is a double bill which they wouldn't mind, considering they are competing with themselves for the top honors. None 4 3 Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa Moving out of Top-3, JTYJN still continues to be a good enough competition to reckon with. 'Pappu' is all set to continue dancing till the end of the year at the least. None 5 4 Karzzzz Hovering into the middle of the charts ever since it's arrival, 'Karzzzz' has it's trump card in intense promotion which is enabling it's enhanced presence amongst the movie lovers 24X7. Music is the highlight of the film that should help it take a good opening at the box office on this Friday release. Each of the songs from the film has now been unleashed on the music channels. It is now up to the release of the film to enable 'Karzzzz' a better status in the charts. 6 5 Singh Is Kinng Visit any pub, club or disc and there are remote chances that you would come back without hearing 'Singh Is Kinng' blazing away to glory. Akshay has got a flagship number to his credit that has almost become his identity. It is surprising to see the music company not promoting 'Singh Is Kinng' music at all when the music clearly had a potential to further make a killing at the stands 7 8 Golmaal Returns Moving up by a spot, 'Golmaal Returns' is seeing 'Tha Karke' and 'Vacancy' being heavily promoted all over. These are the two songs that have it in them to ensure that both the music as well as the movie gain good enough attention. 'Tu Saala' hasn't been able to do 'It's Rocking' for Pritam-Kareena combo 8 7 Kidnap 'Kidnap' is now staring at the bottom of the barrel. 'Ae Yaa' and 'Mausam' were decent tracks but couldn't go the whole distance. The film has seen a rapid fall at the box office and music, which may have grown along with the film, is also seeing the journey south 9 9 Fashion 'Fashion' is now just a fortnight away and the focus has shifted to the movie promotion rather than music. However, the sales should soar once the movie releases since the album is uniformly good. 'Fashion' isn't a musical hence one can't expect the songs (which are good though) to be bombarded on the music channels 24X7 10 10 Jannat Pritam has the last laugh as amongst his three long running albums - 'Race', 'Jannat' and 'Kismat Konection' - 'Jannat' takes the honor of a spot in the Top-10. Guess Who?

Good Morning folkies. Well, that's how we generally would like to start any day, but definitely not a Monday, because you know that Monday is one day where a mere Good Morning will not do the trick. The solution to this is nothing else than the capsule sized dynamite called as 'Guess Who', a game which will sky rocket your grey cells to the seventh heaven and will take you further in Cloud Nine, if you are able to crack it. So, let's see, that whether you remain stuck (read 'satisfied') in the seventh heaven or are you able to pave your way through the Cloud Nine! Here it goes... the clues this week are so very simple that you will be able to answer like a 'Little Star'. This week's celebrity is no doubt a star wife, who deserves was an actress herself and who quit films after her marriage, even when she was on the peak of her career. Not the one to sit idle at home and see her hubby earn, she chose to keep herself occupied by getting into the 'busy-ness' mode by making small, beautiful things that helps us bid adieu to darkness! One more clue about this chic and it will look like a 'Fair' of clues! Best is that we will stop it here and leave the guess part to you. If you feel that you have managed to crack it, then, simply post your answers below (as if you didn't know!). To find out last week's answer click here
