The CW Finally Spins Off ‘America’s Next Top Model’

We don't know why someone didn't think of this until eleven cycles in, but the CW is spinning off America's Next Top Model. The new series is called Operation Fabulous (working title, but we hope it sticks) and stars Jay Manuel and Miss J. Alexander. They'll travel the country giving makeovers to lucky participants in each town. Reuters reports:

In various towns, the duo will select five participants and give them "Top Model"-style overhauls — how to dress, wear their hair and makeup and bring out their confidence with the support of family, friends and their community.

The project seeks to capitalize on a fan-favorite "Model" segment, when contestants are given head-to-toe high-fashion makeovers supervised by Alexander.

Sure, we may already have two similar shows starring Tim Gunn and Carson Kressley respectively, but this one is by Tyra Banks! She'll executive-produce the series along with Ken Mok, whom she worked with on America's Next Top Model and forthcoming fashion-magazine-assistant reality show Stylista. And now she has one more mechanism with which to mold the nation's adolescent women in her image. And we thought the economic crisis was scary! If you're brave enough to put yourself in the hands of "J and Jay," the casting call is here.

Does America Care About William Ayers?

Exactly the type to captivate America's youth.
Photo: AP

With John McCain's first personal mention of former Weather Underground member William Ayers at (another angry) rally yesterday and a new Ayers-focused ad supposedly hitting the airwaves, it's clear that the McCain campaign is still hoping to work up some kind of reaction to the Obama-Ayers relationship. Obama explained in a radio interview yesterday that he had met Ayers "working on a school-reform project" and "assumed that he had been rehabilitated." Whether or not that justification will alleviate voters' doubts is one question; whether voters actually have doubts, or are more preoccupied with the collapsing economy, is another.

• Ben Smith believes Obama's assumptions that Ayers had been "rehabilitated" may not be "unreasonable," since Ayers, though unrepentant, "had not yet become notorious" for his part in the Weather Underground. [Politico]

• Jennifer Rubin says that if that's Obama's explanation, he "seems dangerously unaware of the political views and opinions of those closest to him." [Contentions/Commentary]

• David S. Tanenhaus, who worked in the juvenile-justice system with Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn in the mid-nineties, seems to corroborate Obama's explanation: "To meet Ayers and Dohrn, as I did in 1995, was to encounter a middle-aged couple in their early 50s who seemed at ease in the vibrant academic community of Hyde Park." [Slate]

• Ross Douthat thinks that, to undecided voters, McCain's focus on Ayers looks "utterly disconnected from what's happening in the world." It's like the McCain campaign is being paid by Thomas Frank "to goose his book sales and vindicate his thesis." [Atlantic]

• Nate Silver examines the effects of the Ayers attacks so far, concluding that they're creating interest (Ayers's Wikipedia page is getting a lot of attention) but aren't making much of a tangible impact. Between October 3 and 8, Obama's unfavorables have increased by 1.7 percent, but McCain's have increased by about 2 percent. Obama's best defense is probably to "appear before a national audience as frequently as possible." [FiveThirtyEight]

• Charles Krauthammer contends that bringing up Obama's associations is completely legitimate, though with "the economy overshadowing everything, it may be too late politically to be raising this issue." McCain should have embraced this strategy "before the economic meltdown allowed the Obama campaign (and the mainstream media, which is to say the same thing) to dismiss the charges as an act of desperation by the trailing candidate." [WP]

• Chuck Todd and friends, similarly, are "hearing whispers — even among some Dems — wondering why the McCain folks decided to use Ayers now and not two months ago when they instead went the empty rhetoric/celebrity route." Doing it now risks "looking out of touch." [First Read/MSNBC]

• Marc Ambinder doesn't think McCain is serious about pushing the Ayers line; if he was, he would "put lots of money into an Ayers ad," "devote a stump speech to Obama's associations and Obama's associations only," or "mention Ayers in a debate." He's done none of those things so far. McCain understands that the media finds it easy to dismiss the "spectacle" of "dumping on Obama's character and associations in the middle of the worst economic crisis." [Atlantic]

• Michael Crowley wonders why, if "Ayers is self-evidently loathsome enough that we should doubt Obama's basic judgment," McCain would need to "keep stretching the facts" on an Ayers quote that ran in the New York Times. [Stump/New Republic]

• Tim Fernholz theorizes that the reason conservatives are indulging in these character-based suspicions of Obama but liberals aren't doing the same regarding McCain is that liberals are content to focus on conservative ideas, which "have less and less to do with reality, particularly in the economic realm," while liberal policies "are mostly popular, reasonable, and increasingly feasible." [Tapped/American Prospect]

• Chris Cillizza agrees that until "voters believe McCain understands their struggles and worries on the economy, it's likely they will dismiss as frivolous attacks on Obama's past relationships." But the other flaw of the Ayers strategy is that "the incidents in questions are not only decades old but also have already been prosecuted in the media during the Democratic primaries." This is why the McCain campaign is utilizing "the old 'cover up is worse than the crime' strategy." [Fix/WP]

• Jake Tapper writes that, while "it's certainly true that Obama and his campaign have been less-than-forthcoming about the Ayers relationship," many Republicans fear "that few swing voters will find this issue more compelling than the economy" and "will only paint McCain as nasty and out of touch." [Political Punch/ABC News]

‘The Office’: More Holly, Pam, and Outback Steakhouse Ribs, Please!

Photo: Courtesy of NBC

Not to get too ahead of ourselves, but how will The Office recover from losing Amy Ryan? The Oscar-nominated and beloved former Wire star has only, well, four episodes left as the daffily cheesy HR rep Holly Flax, and we already miss her. (Only Ryan could make us dread the return of the once-perfect deadpan, sad-sack Charlie Brown that is Toby.) Ryan’s unexpectedly screwball — she’s got a little Carol Burnett in her — but, more crucially, she’s brilliant at furiously sketching in an imaginary backstory on the fly without breaking a sweat.

During last night’s episode, she mentions that she was an unpopular but “ethical” hall monitor in high school, obsessing over the slightest misdemeanor. Putting it lightly, this is not something that jibes with her character; it’s actually a cheapish way to drive a (brief) wedge between her and Michael. But Ryan’s so good at shifting gears that you don’t even notice the shorthand.

Thus, the scene in which Holly tells Michael the worst thing he could possibly hear — “It’s not a family, it’s a workplace” — has legitimate impact that it might not have necessarily deserved. (Steve Carell’s straight-faced implosion was perfect too; his quietly hurt reaction shots are always a bit more fun than his conference-room stand-up acts — though “Let’s Get Ethical” with headbands was an inspired touch.) In just three episodes, Carell and Ryan have created an empathetic couple that’ll be depressing to see inevitably part. That takes most shows, and most actors, years.

Meanwhile, Meredith gets her first-ever singular focus, nobody really cares about Jim and Pam’s engagement, and there’s a fun old-school Jim prank on Dwight. Perhaps most noteworthy? Other than the first scene in which she’s talking on speaker phone, there’s no Pam. As interesting as her New York story line might turn out to be, she’s missed. (Her absence might have contributed to the episode’s somewhat disposable feel.) Oh, and readers of Emily Nussbaum’s outstanding story in this week’s issue about integrated sponsorships in network programming will appreciate the episode’s last line, as the whole staff chows down on free Outback Steakhouse: “Keep those ribs coming!” Check, please!

Philadelphia ‘Daily News’ Sends Cease and Desist Letter to Daily Beast

As you can see here, and as we pointed out on Monday, the logo for Tina Brown's new Web venture, the Daily Beast, is strikingly similar to that of the Philadelphia Daily News. And apparently we aren't the only ones to think so. The parent company of the News sent a letter to Brown on Tuesday regarding the issue. From Dan Gross's column in today's issue of the paper:

The legal letter demands the news site stop using its potentially trademark-infringing logo, which is "virtually identical in shape, color, font and style to our own Daily News logo." The letter adds that "our readers could easily be duped into thinking that your Web site is somehow affiliated" with the Daily News.

A Beast spokesperson apparently had no comment over the similarity, but with all the media people advising Brown on the development of the site, this must be something that they'd noticed before. Perhaps they thought the Daily News would simply find the similarity complimentary? Apparently not. The title of Gross's column today is: "Flattered by Imitation, but…"

Anti-Scientology People Are Going to Boo Katie Holmes Outside the Theater Next Week

Katie Holmes is going to be booed by anti-Scientology critics outside the Schoenfeld Theater when she opens there Tuesday in All My Sons. (Also, Bill Maher doesn't think Scientology's ideas are that crazy compared to Judeo-Christianity.) Diddy bopped at Madonna's show at the Garden Tuesday. Lucie Arnaz called ahead to a cabaret place in Staten Island to tell them to have a martini or two ready for her.

LL Cool J seems to say that he loves street hot dogs even though the hot-dog guy may be scratching or pulling at his underwear (his own, not LL's) while making it. NYU ran out of toilet paper and trash bags in the dorm that used to be the club Palladium. Graydon Carter, newly anointed CNN-reporter-who-opines Campbell Brown, Frank Rich, Peggy Noonan, and others will yak at a Time election roundtable at Time Warner HQ next week. Tyson Beckford tried to score with model Noémie Lenoir at Megu's new club M, but he didn't.

Swedish pop singer Robyn said she was told not to approach, talk to, or take pictures of Madonna in return for the privilege of opening some European dates for her. She was also not allowed to think about Madonna, or even try not to think about her. Cindy Adams confirms rumors that Sarah Palin will go on SNL October 25, and apparently is psyched to do so. Also, her sister says their dad used to make Sarah hold the moose eyeballs when they all went hunting. Cindy also interviews the memorabilia guy who was involved in that whole O.J. thing and also calls O.J. a scumbag pig. She also says that people say that McCain should appoint a panel of financial experts like Bloomberg to resuscitate his campaign. Cindy also had to make an emergency call to her dentist after she blew out her front tooth on a bone in the lamb curry her maid, Nazalene, made for her during the presidential debate. And writing about it is such a passive-aggressive way to get back at Nazalene, don't you think, even though Naz has been her maid for eleven years?

Tucker Carlson builds a cabin in his head to help get him to sleep. Britney says she doesn't know what she was thinking acting crazy the past few years, and also maybe is a little worried because an ex of hers has a sex tape of her wearing only a pink wig. Mickey Rourke cut his forehead for his performance in The Wrestler because he heard that real wrestlers sometimes do that. Ex-gay-porn-kingpin Terrence Bean has raised $50,000 to $100,000 for Obama.

Paul Dergarabedian Is Rich!

Photo-illustration: Courtesy of IFC Films

Great news! Hollywood.com has acquired box-office number-comparer Paul Dergarabedian's firm, Media by Numbers, for an "unspecified cash payment" that will likely make him wealthy beyond all human comprehension (we can only imagine how difficult it must've been to negotiate a purchase price with the only person in Los Angeles who knows which numbers are bigger than other numbers). Dergarabedian, who'll stay with the company, couldn't be reached for comment, but if he had been, we imagine he'd have said something like, "It is clear to me that I have sold my company to Hollywood.com for an unspecified cash payment."

LVMH Profits Up Thanks to Louis Vuitton Monogram Bags

Bags people are actually buying.
Photo: Courtesy of Louis Vuitton

Yesterday the stock market lost more points in a single day than it has in 21 years. Some negative thinkers are calling it a crash. But the fashion industry has proved there is a light at the end of this pitch-black tunnel, and it shines thanks to handbags. LVMH announced yesterday revenues actually increased in the third quarter, thanks to "remarkable" sales at Louis Vuitton. LVMH revenues grew 6 percent over three months through September. And Louis Vuitton alone enjoyed double-digit growth in the same period since its Damier Graphite and Monogram lines are "still enjoying exceptional momentum." Leave it to the fashion industry to inject that dose of positivity everyone's griping about into These Economic Times. LVMH said other brands performed well, too, like Fendi, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, and Givenchy and that accessories continue to "see strong progress." So don't buy gold! Buy handbags.

Christie Brinkley’s Media Control

People this pretty shouldn't be allowed to break up in the first place.
Photo: Getty Images

Christie Brinkley obtained a restraining order in court yesterday to prevent ex-husband Peter Cook from letting their two children, Jack, 13, and Sailor, 10, watch his much-publicized interview with Barbara Walters tonight on 20/20. Brinkley also insists that Cook, who has custody of the kids for the weekend, keep them away from his Sag Harbor home in order to avoid prying media eyes. Brinkley had originally filed a complaint to have custody for the weekend, but it was refused by a judge. She claims that she just wants to protect her children from the embarrassing public details of their split. Cook calls these actions hypocritical, considering the fact that she insisted their divorce trial be opened to the press. But it's not quite hypocrisy — she pretty openly just wants her kids to see her side of the story in the media. It's plain, old-fashioned message management. Say what you will about the former Sports Illustrated cover girl — she's always known just what to reveal, and what to keep covered up.

Now called Armored, the story (by David Ayer and Se7en's Andrew Kevin Walker) follows a man who takes a job working for an armored-car company to sabotage their heist. When it comes to heist movies, F. Gary Gray is definitely taking a quantity-over-quality approach. [Variety]

A Whole Bunch of Fame-ous Kids: MGM has rounded out the cast of their Fame remake. Ready? It now includes Kristy Flores, Paul Lacono, Paul McGill, Naturi Naughton, Kay Panabaker, Kherington Payne, Collins Pennie, Walter Perez, and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle (whew!). Sun Crosses World, Leaving Economic Wreckage in Its Wake

Aim higher, dude. Aim higher.
Photo: Getty Images

Your workday may just be starting, but already it's a terrible one for the parts of the world where the day begins earlier. As the sun reached Asia and markets opened, stock markets crashed, with Japan's Nikkei index dropping 9.6 percent before close, its lowest level since 2003. It's set to be the region's worst week on record. The sun wreaked havoc on European markets next, with markets losing 10 percent across the board. And now the cursed ball of flame has reached America! As it scorches away across the heartland, GE has already announced a 22 percent drop in third-quarter net income. Stock futures suggest the Dow will fall about 3.3 percent at the opening of trading. Newspapers and TV news outlets are already asking whether this will be called "Black Friday."

Does nobody see what needs to be done? Does nobody see the obvious correlation between the arrival of the hydrogen-high beast in the sky and disaster here on the ground? The answer is clear: We need to shoot down the sun. And John McCain is just the candidate to do it.

Banks Falter, Strippers and Scoundrels Thrive During Greatest Depression

Photo: Getty Images

We have been having a great time with all of the fun news coming out of the Greatest Depression but even we, to paraphrase our patron saint Mary J. Blige, are getting a little tired of the drama. Today in the last hour of trading, for the fourth day in a row since the House passed its rescue package, the Dow took another nosedive, down 680 points. The S&P 500 is hovering around 22 percent, which is extremely worrying to Floyd Norris. General Motors sank 31 percent, and even banks regarded as reasonably solid — JPMorgan and Bank of America, for instance — took a turn for the worse. Worryingly, so did Wells Fargo, no doubt due to its involvement with that floozy Wachovia. Speaking of which, Wells Fargo's talks with Citigroup blew up today — Citi was like "eff this" after the two failed to come to a mutual agreement; meaning that now Wells Fargo will either pay a $60 billion dowry to Citigroup to release Wachovia or — more likely — just walk away, leaving the bank in a loveless marriage to Vikram Pandit. No! We were wrong! They were like, "Go ahead, be with your whore." Happy ending!

Why Naked Models Backstage Aren’t Erotic

Backstage at Prada.
Photo: Imaxtree

Backstage at fashion shows, models don't get privacy when they change. Tell you something you don't know, right? No, sorry — we might not, since we just read a really long story about models getting naked backstage in today's New York Times 'Styles' section. Reporters, photographers, makeup artists, hairstylists, security guards, and general hanger-onners are all backstage when the models prep for the runway. Guy Trebay, who has seen hundreds of models changing backstage at the shows, writes:

What is strangest, perhaps, about this particular form of employment — for which there is no comprehensive job description — is that being around rooms filled with unclad women and men is anything but stimulating.

Maybe that's because — according to men we're not sure we believe — runway models aren't hot. They just... look like runway models

“When you see some doll walking down the catwalk in some sheer thing or nearly naked, it’s fashion,” Mr. Blanks remarked in Paris last week. “If you saw that same girl pole dancing in a club, it would be hot.”

We disagree, Tim. There are a lot of people (perhaps mostly Americans, who don't see boobs everywhere whenever they go to a beach or pool) who notice the nipples through those sheer things before they notice the sheer things. Call us sick or perverted, but that's how we feel. And every time we see such garments, we wonder if the girls wearing them are comfortable or just doing it out of a twisted sense of obligation.

But you know what else makes the situation not sexy? A lot of these girls are in their TEENS. Like Karlie Kloss, who just turned 16. She talked to Trebay about the sick photographers who try to get naked-model Lolita shots.

“It is an issue,” Ms. Kloss said, as she waited before a show in Paris for her turn with hair and makeup. “People respect that you want and need some privacy,” she added, or most do, anyway.

“One time, I was with Vlada,” Ms. Kloss said, referring to the Russian model Vlada Roslyakova, and “a photographer took a picture of her topless and then left.” Ms. Roslyakova leapt from her chair, chased the woman into the street and tussled with her until she deleted the shot.

Still, it’s going to happen, Ms. Kloss added; even in these early days in the business, she said: “I’m numb to the nudity. It’s just part of the job.”

Again, not erotic! But perhaps a little sad.

Artist Who Protested Fancy New Condos on Bond Street Just Bought One

Once upon a time (well, two years ago), artist Chuck Close worried that the new development on Bond Street would block the natural light he needed to work in his studio at Number 20. Now it turns out the painter and his wife Leslie just paid nearly $6 million for a unit in the new 48 Bond, designed by Deborah Berke. We're not sure whether this means he'll be ditching his fantastic, carefully crafted West Village home, but the lesson for all you light-starved artists out there is that if you keep buying into the tallest new buildings on the street, you'll never actually be light-starved! Marc Jacobs Themes Next Holiday Party ‘Rock and Roll Circus’

Marc Jacobs as camel toe last year.
Photo: Getty Images

Marc Jacobs's holiday parties are legendary. The theme is executed to the nines and attendees dress up with the same enthusiasm. They don't just put on a headband with furry triangles and call themselves cats. Oh no. They go to the Halloween spa in Iceland and get treatments that enable their bodies to grow actual fur and claws for a day. Well, not really but the preparation required is just about as intense. So what do the posh fabulous people invited have to prepare for this year? Marc just revealed the theme: "Rock and Roll Circus." According to WWD the invite references the documentary The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus about the Stones' 1968 concerts. That part's all fine and well, but can someone tell us what is up with all the fashion-meets-circus stuff lately? On Saturday, Diesel's 30th-Anniversary party in Brooklyn has the same "Rock and Roll Circus" theme. And what's more, Heatherette designer Richie Rich's ad campaign for his forthcoming Hot Topic line has a "dark circus" theme. So... are clowns going to pop up on the runways in February? Alongside models in stilts? Oh wait — they already do that.

Williamsburg, Land of the Lushly Rich and Humbly Cautious

Photo: williamsburgedge.com

Two fabulous polarities come out of Williamsburg today. On one end, the hood's most expensive residential sale ever was announced today — a $5.145 million duplex penthouse in massive new condo complex The Edge, with six bedrooms and baths, two roof decks, and two balconies. And on the other end, Northside Piers and the Decora are adapting to the new, not-so-confident market by letting people rent-to-own. If you decide to buy in six months, all of your paid rent will go toward the down payment, but if you wait six to nine months, only half will. So don't get too comfy with your indecision. And don't think you'll end-run a mortgage prequalification this way, either. You'll still need it. Well, given all that, we'll just take the $5 million condo. [Brownstoner, Real Deal]

Wayne Coyne’s House Not Quite As Awesome As We’d Hoped

The piece in today's New York Times on Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne's Oklahoma City house is a huge letdown for anyone who's ever listened to The Soft Bulletin and fantasized about the batshit-crazy home its creator probably lives in. Sure, Coyne's digs feature gargoyles and a purple-painted guest residence, but whose don't? Mostly it just seems like the home of a pack rat — vintage lunch boxes, a couple disco balls, and an old jukebox? Yawn. Where are the teleportation devices? And the chupacabra petting zoo? We'll keep dreaming. [NYT]

David Wain on ‘Role Models’ and Directing McLovin

Photo: Getty Images

David Wain’s first two directorial efforts — Wet Hot American Summer and The Ten — were very much in line with the absurdist humor we've come to expect from Wain and his fellow alums from The State. But his latest moves him away from that scene for the first time — next month’s big-budget studio comedy Role Models, starring old friend Paul Rudd and new friend Sean William Scott as energy drink reps who, through a series of wacky machinations, are sentenced to community service as child mentors. Wain, who's hosting New York’s 40th-Anniversary party tomorrow night alongside Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black, spoke with Vulture about Paul Rudd’s writing, the future of McLovin, and whether or not girls on the street feel the urge to randomly make out with him.

Did you watch the debate?
I did. I thought it was just so interesting watching John McCain amble around, like he was saying, “Where's my newspaper? I lost my dog!”…I haven't been paying super-close attention to the election. I heard McCain had picked a V.P. but I haven't heard who it is yet. I guess I have to read the Huffington Post to find out. Or Vulture.

The screenplay for Role Models is credited to you with Paul Rudd and Ken Marino. What was the writing process like? Would you improvise lines?
We did pretty much everything. Some improvising as the camera was rolling, some stuff where we were sketching out the scene before we shot it. Sometimes we wrote the weekend before we were shooting. It was a seat-of-the-pants type thing. The studios and the producers all kind of rolled our sleeves together and did it together, and that kind of energy ended up benefiting the film.

Were you hesitant to do your first big studio comedy or eager to give it a shot?
I was hesitant. My whole history in movies and in other stuff has been very guerrilla. Independent-minded. Very low-budget stuff. And that's definitely always been my comfort zone and what I've done in the past. I had the stereotypical view of what the studio-film experience was going to be and that the studio was going to be all over me and they'd try to water it down and make it not funny. And for the most part, you know, the studio isn’t a thing; they were a bunch of human beings, and these human beings were of great assistance to me.

Was there anything you were particularly happy about doing with your expanded budget?
The climax is this big faux-medieval battle sequence and there's no way I could have shot that on a low budget. The best part of having the big budget is that you can actually have a second to breathe or try it a couple of different ways. [And] you can afford to pay to bring in the best person to build this prop, or to do this stunt, or the funniest actor to do this scene.

This is Christopher Mintz-Plasse's first big post-McLovin role...
I didn't know that was his name. I just called him McLovin. I saw his name on the call sheets, and I realized…When you are McLovin, your second movie is a pretty big deal. But I didn't think of it from his point of view. Who cares! No, the truth is when I came onboard we had to find out who would play this character. We were looking mostly at younger boys, and no one was doing it even close. It was a very tough character, a nerdy kid but you have to actually feel for the guy. And then when I saw Superbad I said, we have to get this kid.

What’s the process like on your web series, Wainy Days? Where in New York did you shoot?
Mostly in the Los Angeles section of New York. Most of it's fake. One time, I was so busy that we shot a bunch of them where I wasn't even in a lot of them. The one with Rashida Jones where she plays me, or the one with Jason Sudeikis where he plays me. I went and shot my part of seven pieces in one day.

How does playing the character of David Wain on Wainy Days affect your interaction with people?
You mean do girls come up and want to make out with me? I wish that happened more often. The line between that and real life has always been blurry. I'm just embracing it.

Angelina Jolie Breast Feeds on the New ‘W’ Cover

This is the November cover of W, shot by Brad Pitt. As you can see, Angelina is breast feeding her baby. There's more where that came from inside the issue — which hits stands October 21 — also shot by Brad. Indeed, we appreciate that she appears stripped of the veneer that plagues magazine covers more often than it helps them. Don't get us wrong — we're sure this was Photoshopped considerably (just because all images in magazines are) but it's nice to look at a cover and not wonder how much thinner they made its subject.
