Vishal-Shekhar taste success down South

Vishal and Shekhar are seeing their stocks grow with every passing quarter. Om Shanti Om was their highpoint in the year 2007 while in 2008 the music of Tashan and Bachna Ae Haseeno continues to find an audience for themselves in spite of quite a few weeks gone by since the albums hit the stands. Never mind an occasional Bhoothnath, the composer duo continues to enthrall audience with their tunes. Now it is audience down South which is enjoying the Vishal-Shekhar touch as the composers give them something in their own language. They have just seen the release of their first ever project in a regional language in the form of Telugu film Chintakayala Ravi which stars superstar Venkatesh. "When Venkatesh came to us with the project, we were game to compose for it. In any case we never had any qualms of composing for a regional film and since the setup looked great as well, we pronto began working on the project. You would find that the songs of Chintakayala Ravi have completely our flavour in them", informs Vishal of the Vishal-Shekhar duo who has just arrived with the music of Karan Johar's Dostana. One also hears that the price paid to Vishal-Shekhar has been monumental as well. Winks Vishal, "Never ask a man's salary, though all I can divulge is that we too have been informed about the price being amongst the highest ever paid to the composers for a Telugu film." While the release itself is special for the young men, what enthralls them further is the Triple Platinum status which the music album has fetched for itself on the day of its release. "Triple Platinum stands for the fact that there has been a pre-order placed for 5 lakhs units. I am told by the makers that this is unprecedented and they are glad to see such a massive audience response", says Vishal with a glee. Directed by Yogi and produced by Nallamalupu Srinivas (Bujji) under Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Productions, Chintakayala Ravi also stars Anushka and Mamta Mohandas. The film has been shot in a major way in New York and Washington, DC, USA and is expected to arrive on screens this festive season of Dussera and Diwali. Also, buzz has it that Aarti Chhabria has performed a steamy and seductive item number which is already being touted as the highlight of the film.

Kajol appointed as Goodwill Ambassador of UK based Loomba Trust

Kajol may not be seen much in films these days but the bubbly actress surely has her hands full with endorsements and some charitable work. Kajol was recently appointed as the goodwill ambassador of the U.K. based Loomba Trust, a charity dedicated to the education of widow's children in and around India. The function held at Whitehall London (on the occasion of UN International day to celebrate non-violence- Oct 2) saw some bigwigs such as Cherie Blair (wife of former British P.M. Tony Blair), Mayor of London Boris Johnson and India's high commissioner to the U.K. Shiv Shankar Mukherjee in attendance. Cherie Blair who also happens to be the President of the Loomba Trust presented Kajol with a plaque. The actress said that she would do her best to be worthy of this appointment. The Loomba Trust, founded by Raj Loomba, has already helped educated 3500 children of widows in India and plans to extend its activities to Sri Lanka, Nepal and South Africa in the coming years.

"Golmaal Returns has maintained the flavour of Golmaal" - Shreyas Talpade

Nobody, absolutely nobody who's worked with Shreyas Talpade has a bad remark to be made against him. I've never, ever heard of him pulling a star turn or showing any ego. He is like a diamond cutter. You don't just look at the diamond, you only notice that there is no flaw. For me, he is the young Naseer saab or Om Puri who, in years to come, is going to be India's finest actors around. His Iqbal gave him recognition, his Dor gave him maturity and his Om Shanti Om gave him his biggest blockbuster hit till date. That's not all. With his Welcome To Sajjanpur being screened at this years London Film Festival taking place from October 15 to 30th, the actor is on cloud nine and is looking forward to his next big release Golmaal Returns. Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel brings to you this exclusive talkathon with Talpade where he talks about Celina, Tusshar, his directors Rohit Shetty and Nagesh Kukunoor and why he thinks that Golmaal Returns will have a blast this Diwali. The new 'Sajjan' Shreyas Talpade has taken over from the Iqbal and Dor types to the one doing Golmaal. What say? (laughs). In fact when I was in theatre, there was a lot of comedy I did and I really enjoyed doing the plays. It is difficult to make people laugh but I guess if you enjoy doing it then people will enjoy seeing it too. You are the only new comer from the bunch of four lunatics by taking Sharman Joshi's place. Did your role demand to see Golmaal part one? I have seen Golmaal part one and now we begin from where my director Rohit Shetty left the four mad men (laughs). It is a new story and they are not friends in this new series. Ajay Devgan's character works in a company and I work under Ajay. Tusshar is Ajay's brother in law. What was more important for me was jelling with the entire team because the chemistry from part one had to be continued in part two. I had to look as a part of the team and not a new comer in the gang. It was possible only because of my director Rohit Shetty, who is a cool guy, who made me comfortable and secondly Ajay, Arshad and Tusshar were superb in terms of improvising, co-operating and supporting me. I was made to feel at home right from day one. In a recent interview with Celina in Mumbai, she revealed to me that the two co-stars she'd love to work again and again are Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade. What makes you special in front of her? (laughs) This was the first time I've worked with Celina and for her to make that remark is inspiring. I was so pleasantly surprised by seeing her dedication and her approach towards her character, even in terms of improvising, suggesting and adding certain things. We did a lot of masti together. If you have a co-star who is so enthusiastic and charged up to contribute then its complete fun to work. The whole rapport goes much beyond than just sharing the screen space. The kind of rapport me, Tusshar and Celina now have is, touchwood, amazing. We talk nonsense and can go on for hours together talking bull sh**, but we have a great time. I would any day prefer working with Tusshar and Celina. Is there any of your film to look out for opposite Celina or Tusshar? Well, in fact, Celina and I have worked in a film together called Paying Guest. It's a Mukta Arts film directed by Paritosh Painter who is a well known theatre personality. I've known Paritosh since college. We were in the same drama team for five years. It was like going back to the college nostalgia thing with Paritosh. With Celina, I knew her strengths and what she was capable of. So we had a ball shooting together. What's 'Paying Guest' all about? It's about four friends who are looking for a place to stay as Paying Guests and for that what all they need to do. It's shot in Bangkok. Wow, you again go to Bangkok then? (laughs). Yes. Seems like I will soon be getting a citizenship of Bangkok. It's an honour that Welcome to Sajjanpur has been selected for the London Film Festival Are you proud of the fact that your film Welcome to Sajjanpur is to be screened at the prestigious London Film Festival 2008? Absolutely. It is definitely an honour I should say. The film getting selected in the London Film Festival this year is a huge deal for the entire team. For me, first of all, doing a Shyam Benegal film was an honour and the film getting selected at the LFF is indeed a proud moment for anyone who is doing his first solo project. It is running very well in the cinemas across India right now. So it's party time for all of us and we should celebrate. It's gone to the London Film Festival but the film hasn't released theatrically in the U.K. Are you upset of that fact? Kind of, but it's because of the London Film Festival. We had to first screen it there and only after that's over we can release it. So I am sure the producer and the director will be looking to release it in the cinemas soon. Let's hope so. 'Tha Kar Ke' is inspired from the Rajnikant film Sivaji which Rohit Shetty saw and thought that we should have a song like that Now that Golmaal is returning, is Shreyas going to 'Tha Kar De' everyone? (laughs) It's definitely going to work brother. There is a shock element in the film but I am happy for the fact that I am able to maintain some sort of a balance in the scripts I am signing, whether it may be comedy, horror or whatever. I am proud of Golmaal Returns. 'Tha Kar Ke' is inspired from the Rajnikant film Sivaji which Rohit Shetty saw and thought that we should have a song like that. And there was a bit of scope of such a song in the film. So all of us felt that we should do it. It has some 300 dancers, 150 stunt men with blasts happening and cars flying over each other. It's a fun song which took about 12 days to shoot. I am not sure how much was the cost involved but it definitely cost the producers a bomb. Golmaal Returns has maintained the flavour of Golmaal What makes Golmaal Returns different from other comedy films you've done in the past? In a way the genre is same. It's slapstick, mad and over the top kind of comedy. But the kind of twists and turns that are there in Golmaal Returns are amazing. It has somewhere maintained the kind of honesty and innocence that was there in part one. So you won't find stars in the film but characters. Golmaal Returns has maintained the flavour of part one Golmaal. You will always be remembered as a boy in Nagesh Kukunoor's Iqbal. Now Aashayein is on hold. Is it something that you've discussed with your friend Nagesh about? See, I'm not a part of Aashayein. John Abraham is in it. So honestly I don't know the status of the film and what is really happening with it. I was told that they have postponed the release date for reasons best known to them. The film is complete and I am sure it must've shaped up really well knowing what Nagesh's capabilities are. Has Nagesh approached you for any of his forthcoming projects? I'm not a part of the three films he is doing right now. Tasveer with Akshay Kumar, Aashayein with John Abraham and there is one more he is shooting for in Jaipur as we talk. But you know, with Nagesh, he knows that I'll be there for him and with him whenever he needs me. He has already made it clear that if a particular character suits me then it's only me who will do it and no one else. So, I go by his word and am looking forward to work with him again. Even though he is filming, there is this unpredictable quality in him that I like. He keeps you on your toes as an actor. He has given me two of my best films in my career. Let's return to Golmaal. Any premiere plans of Golmaal Returns in London just like your previous film Om Shanti Om had in Leicester Square? I don't know. But going by the buzz, the curiosity is very positive just like Om Shanti Om. We would love to be there in London because London has given me my biggest blockbuster till date. So you can say it's my lucky venue and I hope someday even my solo films get released in London and we have a premiere there. Any parting message for your fans who are waiting for a blast this Diwali in the form of Golmaal Returns? Well, I am sure they won't regret. They will have a great time and if they are expecting a blast, they will get a blast. They will only come out laughing by the end of the film. I'd like to thank them all for their support and even Welcome to Sajjanpur might release shortly. So I hope both my films are able to bring a smile on their faces.

"I'm very proud of Vijay Mallya for building the F-1 Indian team" - Shilpa Shetty

Download image as wallpaper Shilpa Shetty was at the Formula-1 in Singapore on Sunday evening with soul-mate Raj Kundra as a special guest of Bernie Ecclestone, the founder and owner of Formula-1, and also a special invitee of her dear friend Vijay Mallya. And now she's hooked. A week after the experience she wants more of the racing-track action. Reliving the amazing experience hours after it was over Shilpa says, "It was awesome. There I was sitting in the grid enclave just a breath away from the racing cars. And though I was invited by Mr Ecclestone as a British celebrity, I went there representing the Indian team who were racing for the first time and I was cheering for them." Back to the Formula-1 Grand Prix on Sunday evening, "History was made. Because the race happened for the first time during the night. I had never attended a Grand Prix before and I got to see all the racing legends like Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher for the first time. Felipe Massa's car crashed when we thought he would win...it was quite crazy! I've always loved fast cars. But I've never been to a Grand Prix before. On Sunday in Singapore, I not only got to see the veterans, but also a new breed of racers." Shilpa says the experience watching a Grand Prix live is unbeatable. "The televised version cannot make your blood pound and heart race. Also, the noise of revving cars...it's unparalleled. You can't feel the vibrations on TV." Shilpa jumps to the Indian team's defence for its under-performance at the Grand Prix "They're new. This was their first year. Give them time. I wasn't the least embarrassed. I'm very proud of Vijay Mallya for putting together the first Formula -1 Indian team. He has put India on the Grand Prix map."

Guess Who?

Research shows that 'Good Morning' is undoubtedly the time and tested way to make people get up from their night sleep (and when it's the weekend, its slumber sleep!). But, trust Bollywood Hungama to be different (as it always was, is and will be). That's the only reason we have devised this brain racking game called 'Guess Who', something that makes you get up and sets you think. Having said all that (read 'hogging the limelight'), its only time that we better shift the focus to the Celebrity this week. The celebrity in question this week is a daughter of a superstar, even though she has got a 'Son' in her name! Not the one to ride on her famous surnames' shoulders, she made the whole of Bollywood stand up and take notice of her 'innocence personified' acting talents, from her debut movie itself, and that too, all on her own! If that as not enough, her 'cover-girl' snaps in a zillion magazines only made her the most wanted actress on every director's wish list! Whatever be the matter, if you feel that you have the answer to this week's 'Guess Who' on your platter, then, waste no further time and post your answers below. Top Ten albums of the week

Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses 1 1 Rock On In last 5 week run of the film at theaters, album sales have continued to soar week after week. Each of the songs in the film has gained popularity amongst the youth which has resulted in 'Rock On' gaining a cult status for itself. None 2 2 Bachna Ae Haseeno The film has completed 50 days at the box office while the music is continuing to enjoy great sales as well. Vishal-Shekhar would certainly look at 2008 being one of their most successful years with 'Tashan', 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' and now 'Dostana' that has just hit the stands. None 3 3 Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa Imran Khan may not have enjoyed a musical success with 'Kidnap' but his JTYJN continues to hold fort. For A.R. Rahman, 2008 would be an eventful year since after 'Jodha Akbar', JTYJN and 'Ada', he now has 'Yuvvraaj' wrapping up the year. None 4 4 Karzzzz Himesh's 'Karzzzz' is fighting hard to break into Top-3 but the collective power of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar and Rahman are not allowing that to happen. It should be a matter of time before 'Karzzzz' marches into Top-3 since the film is just around 10 days away. Each of the songs from the film has now been unleashed on the music channels. It is now up to the release of the film to enable 'Karzzzz' a better status in the charts. 5 6 Singh Is Kinng Returning back into Top-5, 'Singh Is Kinng' is now Pritam's only album in the Top-5. His 'Race' and 'Kismat Konnection' have seen an exit from the charts this week though entry of 'Golmaal Returns' means the composer would end the year on a high. It is surprising to see the music company not promoting 'Singh Is Kinng' music at all when the music clearly had a potential to further make a killing at the stands 6 New Dostana 'Dostana' has taken the best start of 2008 for Vishal-Shekhar. 'Tashan' and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' did boast of a good opening at the music stands but 'Dostana' has been even better. A huge project for everyone involved, it has got just the right kick start with 'Jaane Kyon' and 'Desi Girl'. None 7 5 Kidnap After a chance break into Top-5 last week, 'Kidnap' sees a fall by a couple of spots. It is 'Mit Jaaye' that continues to be the most liked song of the album though! Music hasn't been the talking point of the film at all after it's release in the Friday gone by 8 New Golmaal Returns Ashish Pandit's 'Tha Karke' and Pritam's 'Vacancy' have ensured that 'Golmaal Returns' makes an early impression in the charts. Superb promotion means that the album has only one way to go and that's up! Music belongs to 'hear today forget tomorrow' brand and won't quite do a 'Race' or a 'Jannat' on the stands 9 8 Fashion Staying consistent at the bottom of the charts, 'Fashion' is making a reasonable impression if one considers the genre it belongs to. While 'Mar Jaanva' is the pick of the lot, one waits to have a dekko at 'Ashiyaana' 'Fashion' isn't a musical hence one can't expect the songs (which are good though) to be bombarded on the music channels 24X7 10 9 Jannat Showing a long run in the charts, 'Jannat' has now reached it's last leg. 'Yuvvraaj' is just round the corner and it's entry may spell exit for 'Jannat'. None Source: Music Festival, MGF Mall

Freida Pinto makes her big debut with Slumdog Millionaire

The Mumbai- based model Freida Pinto whose debut film, Slumdog Millionaire, has won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, talks about her big launch Launch Slumdog Millionaire is a Hollywood comedy that revolves around the concept of a reality show and how a contestant uses this medium to contact a girl. I play the role of this 18-year-old feisty girl, Latika who is orphaned during childhood and finds a new family with two brothers Jamal and Salim. Together they become the 3 musketeers and start on life's beautiful and ugly journey!! Somehow her life takes an uncertain and dangerous diversion and from then on her ultimate quest in life is to reunite herself with the one she truly loves. Casting coup The casting director and co-director of Slumdog Millionaire, Loveleen Tandon, called me for an audition. This was followed by rigorous months of screen- testing with Danny Boyle the old-school way. It was only after the entire process, which was fun yet gruelling, that I got finalised as Latika. Stepping stone Right from school, I have been actively taking part in all dramatic events. I modelled for a good two-and-a-half years and after I bagged the role I learnt most of what was required from Danny Boyle himself!! Post the film shoot I was really keen on joining a film school for the experience! So I attended the 3-month acting workshop of none other than acting guru Barry John! First shot My first shot was at Dariya Mahal in Versova! It was way back in November 2007. I was so nervous that I couldn't sleep all night because of the anticipation. I wont reveal the scene but I can tell you that it was pretty intense and though. I had just three or four lines on that day but I was worried I would forget those as well!! However Danny warmed me up to the scene with rehearsals and some solid director-actor chat. From then on it was smooth sailing. Stumbling block In terms of acting in Danny Boyle's film the only challenge I faced was to tone down exaggerations! Indians are so wonderfully expressive but it doesn't always work for the camera. Besides that, where I stand today is because of my family's constant support and encouragement. Lessons learnt This industry is for fighters and those who do not give up! It is very important to believe in yourself. Even when a hundred people rejected me, I did not lose hope and finally one of the biggest directors of all times believed in me! Also working in this film has taught me a lot, not just in terms of acting but also about myself, which is an integral part of being a good actor! Matinee idol I definitely respect a lot of actors in our Indian film industry and would love to work with them someday! Tabu is my favourite. I also admire Konkona Sen Sharma's body of work! I think she's one actor who can hold her own and can tackle anything thrown at her. Madhuri Dixit is the true symbol of versatility. Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi are fantastic too. Among the Hollywood female actors, Meryl Streep tops my list! Among the male actors without a doubt it is Aamir Khan! Internationally Johnny Depp is versatile and Jack Nicholson is my ultimate favourite! Future projects As of now I am completely tied up with the press work for Slumdog Millionaire! But I hope to pick up work soon! Screen India
