R.I.P. ‘Rap City’

BET is shutting down Rap City, the onetime cornerstone of its lineup, and we can't help but be a little bit nostalgic. In the age of YouTube, pining for the heyday of music-video shows is almost like reminiscing about the sturdy feel of the typewriter, but some of us remember coming home from school and letting our impressionable minds be molded by sometimes questionable footage: André 3000 popping his shoulder pads in the "Rosa Parks" video, the 504 Boyz making it "Wobble, Wobble." The Times points out that the show had been around since 1989, when it was introduced as a competitor for Yo! MTV Raps, but we more or less just remember Tha Basement years with Big Tigger, especially the dude's terrible freestyles in the booth. They're replacing it with a show about the music industry called The Deal, which is maybe indicative of the state of hip-hop — people are more interested in seeing what happens behind the scenes than in taking in what that industry is actually producing.

Administration Sort of Maybe Somewhat Optimistic About House Vote Today

Photo-illustration: Getty Images/Everett Bogue

The House has tentatively scheduled voting on Round II of the bailout package for "midday" today. Paulson, Pelosi, and company have been working the phones in an attempt to change Monday's "nays" to "yeas," and Bush has reached out personally to several members of Congress. But only a handful seem to have come decidedly around, and making things more confusing is that some of the "sweeteners" added to the packages have caused some of Monday's "yea" voters to sour on it:

Several Republicans said they were contemplating withdrawing their support, including Rep. Spencer Bachus (Ala.), who was among the key negotiators on the bailout measure. Bachus yesterday joined a group of 23 Republicans who said they were angry that the Senate bill would extend four tax breaks that benefit special interests, including Puerto Rican rum makers and the manufacturers of children's wooden arrows.

'Cause in his day, children used to make their wooden arrows themselves. Kids today. What? No. The point is, it's possible that too many cooks ultimately have spoiled the broth. Yesterday Nancy Pelosi said that she would cancel today's vote rather than watch the measure fail again. "We're not going to take a bill to the floor that doesn't have the votes," she said, but added: "I'm optimistic that we will take a bill to the floor." Meanwhile, the White House is hedging against potential disappointment. "We feel somewhat optimistic that the bill has a good chance of passing," spokesman Tony Fratto said. Somewhat. Ask him again in another couple hours.

Breaking: Alessandra Facchinetti OUT at Valentino

Alessandra Facchinetti
Photo: Getty Images

And the rumors were true. WWD just reported that Alessandra Facchinetti is finished at Valentino. Sources tell WWD that longtime Valentino accessories designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli will replace her as head of design. Her spring 2009 show for the house just walked in Paris, backstage at which Valentino CEO Stefano Sassi said, "We will make the situation clear very shortly."

Before Valentino, Facchinetti helmed design at Gucci, where she reportedly disagreed with management over aesthetics and production costs. Speculation about Facchinetti's successor has focused on Giambattista Valli, who presented a much-lauded collection yesterday. Was it all for naught? Valentino's new appointments are reportedly subject to board approval so stand by.

French Paper Mistakes Tina Fey for Sarah Palin

Photo: Courtesy of NBC

How accurate is Tina Fey's impression of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin? Good enough to fool the French newspaper Le Soleil, which accidentally published a still from last week's episode of Saturday Night Live as an official shot of the Alaskan governor on Wednesday. Le Soleil printed an apology for the error yesterday. It's a funny mistake, but since we often have trouble distinguishing Darrell Hammond's impression of Bill Clinton from the real deal, we can empathize. [TV Squad via Buzzfeed]

Madonna and A-Rod Eat at Dos Caminos (But Deny It), Paterson and Bloomberg Eat in the Bronx

You've waited for this and now it's finally happening: Howard Stern and Beth Ostrosky marry tonight at Le Cirque at a dinner for 180. Madonna had A-Rod and two of his friends in stitches with her crazy stories over dinner at Dos Caminos the other night, a witness says, but the stars' reps deny they were there. Tina Fey wanted Salma Hayek to come on 30 Rock so badly that she actually called her herself. Susan Sarandon, 62 tomorrow, wears only fishnets and a feather boa in a new Hollywood pinup book. Paterson and Bloomberg ate together at Enzo's in the Bronx. Do you get a nice cuddly feeling like we do when you think of Paterson?

Scary Spice and her husband are going to renew their vows in Egypt and sent everyone an eleven-page invitation, but people are scared they'll be kidnapped if they go. If Anthony Bourdain had a fantasy BBQ, Keith Richards, Ava Gardner, and the CIA head of counterintelligence would all be there. Robert De Niro's new movie, What Just Happened?, was almost sabotaged by Hollywood insiders for being too Hollywood-insider — until Hollywood insiders saw it and liked it.

CBS News correspondent Lara Logan may be in trouble for taking some photos of Saddam out of Iraq with her, because that may be considered stealing Iraqi art. Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, and Fergie surrounded Harvey Weinstein at Cipriani in London the other night, just as if he were the main dude in Nine, the movie he's producing. (How cool is that art/life interplay thing, right?) Fergie (the Duchess) showed her four different-colored cell phones to Cindy Adams, who sounds pissed off at Geraldo for knocking a martini into her new Prada bag at a party.

Tony Curtis writes that kissing Marilyn for Some Like It Hot was actually really sexy even though he compared it to kissing Hitler back then. Britney Spears has a home office. Rihanna was mistaken for Prince by screaming fans. Jennifer Aniston impersonated George Clooney for Leo DiCaprio at a party at his house. Sam Ronson held the door for Lindsay Lohan, who bought Sam a Red Bull. Heather Locklear dropped and drove over her Gucci sunglasses a couple of times before she was arrested for DUI. Shia LaBeouf has a crush on Diane Sawyer. Mariah may be pregnant. Sharon Stone says it's not true that she tried to inject her son's smelly feet with Botox.

3-D Screens and Wagyu-Beef Burgers

This week, in movie-theater news: The five major movie studios have come to an agreement with the nation’s three major-theater chains over partially covering the costs of converting around 14,000 screens to the digital 3-D format. The chains will still have to raise about $1 billion to complete the digital conversions, but getting the commitment from the studios — which will be paying a “virtual” print fee but will ultimately be saving money by no longer have to ship physical film prints — was the expected first step. The entire process is expected to take three years.

Studios are betting heavy on the spectacle of 3-D to boost theater revenue, with the hopes that eventually people will be so enamored by the technology they’ll show up to the multiplex not just for movies but for concerts and games as well. Plus, theaters can charge more per ticket, which is also the idea behind the luxury-theater trend that isn’t going away — Gold Class Cinemas, a new luxury chain, is opening up in suburban Chicago today with some preposterous amenities. A $35 ticket gets you valet parking and a personal crony who’ll bring you slippers and a blanket; the duck tacos, Dom Perignon, and Wagyu-beef burgers are extra. Obviously, the timing here is a bit awkward, but both the 3-D and luxury trends are gearing up for the long haul — the future of moviegoing, if you will. To which we say: Ha! Everyone knows in the future movies will be beamed directly into our brains.

Giambattista Valli Channels Valentino

Yep, that looks expensive.
Photo: Getty Images

Alessandra Facchinetti shows her spring 2009 collection for Valentino today. But rumors are swirling that Valentino's about to fire her and bring Giambattista Valli onboard as head designer. Valli's collection walked yesterday, and Hilary Alexander couldn't help but notice it felt very Valentino. Valli didn't do much to dispel said rumors, saying, “I have no comment to make on that. I wish Alessandra the best of luck with her show tomorrow. I think she is doing a wonderful job.” But his collection was inspired by Roman frescoes, and photos of Roman statues populated his mood board. You know whose headquarters are in Rome? Valentino's. Valli's front row included Emma Watson, Natalie Portman, and Margherita Missoni — star power that would appeal to a house like (you guessed it!) Valentino. The ball-gown finale earned "tumultuous applause":

The vast skirts, ending in long trains, in lilac, cream and beige, could have stepped out of an Italian Old Master painting. They were composed of literally thousands of minute, silk chiffon “rosettes” or else a cascade of fingertip-pleated ruffles.

The gowns could fetch about $124,000 to $177,000 at Harrods. But one of the store's fashion directors says she expects them to sell easily. So Valli's inspired by Rome, adored by starlets, and easily moves $150,000 dresses, while many critics doubt Facchinetti's consistency. Stay tuned.

Wachovia Ditches Citigroup for Wells Fargo

Photo: Newscom

Wachovia, the banking operations of which Citigroup had agreed to acquire four days ago for $2.2 billion, has now announced it has struck a deal to sell the whole bank to Wells Fargo for about $15.1 billion in stock — without an FDIC backstop, which Citi had required. "This deal will come at no cost to the American taxpayer," Wachovia CEO Bob Steel said in the conference call this morning. Smug. Will this be the thing that makes Citi CEO Vikram Pandit (left) finally stop smiling? [NYT]

1. Anything by Rob Liefeld.
The artist may be the laughingstock of the comics industry, but his hilariously awful drawings of hysterical ponytailed men with extraordinarily improbable anatomy, an abundance of shoulder pads and pouches, and machine guns the size of Buicks define an entire era of superhero comics.

2. A complete collection of a company-wide crossover.
Crossovers are generally considered to be lame cash grabs that exploit the completist tendencies of mainstream superhero fans, but they are undoubtedly the engine running all of Marvel and DC's character franchises. If you're going to buy every issue of one, we'd suggest the Grant Morrison–helmed Final Crisis, but if you'd rather hunt down every comic associated with Marvel's fan-derided Secret Wars II, more power to you.

3. A few random licensed comics from the eighties.
If you got into the habit of buying comic books as a kid in the eighties, you no doubt got your start with comics based on popular movies and toy lines. It doesn't matter if you stock up on old copies of G.I. Joe, Transformers, Star Wars, or ALF, just be sure that they are well worn.

4. Any given comic adaptation of a movie.
Comics companies have been churning out rote mini-series based on movies for years, even though they generally sell poorly and often have no audience aside from fans eager to spoil themselves on the plot of a movie in advance of catching it in the theater. We recommend finding a complete set of an adaptation of a movie that flopped at the box office, like maybe Xanadu or Freejack.

5. Something with a gimmick cover.
It doesn't matter if it's embossed, chrome-coated, glow-in-the-dark, or has a hologram stamped on the front — you need at least one comic that cashed in on the speculation-driven comics market of the early nineties with an unnecessarily flashy cover.

6. An issue of Wizard Magazine.
Snobs may prefer the snooty, harshly critical Comics Journal, but the long-running Wizard Magazine has had a far greater influence on the industry with its unapologetic obsession with superheroes and drawings of scantily clad women.

7. One of those expensive statues of a comic-book character.
If you've stepped foot in a comic-book shop in the past ten years, you've certainly noticed the vast array of collectible statues of characters ranging from Superman to indie icons like Jeff Smith's Bone and alarmingly sexualized sculptures of Vampirella. They're ubiquitous and tacky, and if you're looking for one that is particularly iconic, you should go for the "Mary Jane washes Spider-Man's clothes" statuette that incited a major controversy in the comics blogosphere.

8. Hentai
Yes, there's a lot of great manga out there, but if you want to be a completist, you ought to own at least one book that involves a schoolgirl getting penetrated by a monster's tentacle.

9. Dave Sim Collected Letters 2004
Dave Sim's 300-issue epic Cerebus may be a triumphant achievement in the comics world, but it is nearly overshadowed by its author's ranting essays and letters about the "Marxist/feminist/homosexualist" axis collected in this volume.

10. A comic book guest-starring Wolverine that should not include Wolverine by any reckoning.
Sure, you could sub out Wolverine for the similarly ubiquitous Batman, Spider-Man, or the Punisher, but there is no other character more associated with hilariously unnecessary guest shots than the clawed Canadian anti-hero.

New Jersey’s ‘Star-Ledger’ Saved by Delivery Deal?

After publisher Donald Newhouse last month announced that the Star-Ledger might be "sold, or failing that ... it will close operation on Jan. 5, 2009," the paper and its staff got good news this week. Owners Advance Publications were able to strike a deal with the Newspapers and Mail Deliverers Union, which had been the holdout in a series of deals to reduce costs across the board for the ailing daily. The accord will be ratified by a vote of the union's memberships on Tuesday, and if it succeeds, and as many as 200 staffers do accept buyouts as expected, all will be on track for the paper to continue in existence past January. The Star-Ledger loses an estimated $30 to $40 million a year, but Newhouse is tentatively optimistic about its future. "We're very hopeful that everything will fall into place," he said.

‘Hairspray’ Closing On Broadway

Photo: Getty Images

Hairspray is the latest long-running, high-profile Broadway production to close in recent months, following Rent and Legally Blonde. The musical, which will end its six-year run in January, will close out with the return of Harvey Fierstein in his Tony-winning role as Edna, which is sparking some speculation that the producers are angling to boost audience demand enough to last through the spring of 2009. [MTV News]

Fossett Discovered: The discovery of billionaire adventurer Steve Fossett's belongings was made by some hikers, one of whom worked for a small production company (LMNO) topped by producer Eric Schotz. The opportunistic Schotz heard the news and immediately made a deal with Discovery Channel to document their findings on a TV special, called Steve Fossett: What Went Wrong. Meanwhile, we'll be shopping around our own documentary called Eric Schotz: What a Douchebag. Variety]

Schreiber's Just Your Every Day Guy: Liev Schreiber and Helen "Am I really that good an actress?" Hunt will star in Richard Levine's Every Day. Story follows a couple whose marriage "is strained to the breaking point." If only it were literally strained to the Breaking Point and Gary Busey showed up to kick some ass. [Variety]

Romero Now Officially Lazy: Director George Romero has begun production on an untitled thriller in the — gasp! — zombie genre. This time, inhabitants of an isolated island off the "North American coast" must fend off a zombie outbreak made up of their dead relatives. Seriously, it's like Romero's got a book of Madlibs to finish before he dies and every page is exactly the same: [Noun] of the Dead. This one's probably "Island" of the Dead, although knowing Madlibs we wouldn't rule out "Boobies" of the Dead. [Variety]

Dorothy and John Davis: Producer John Davis has optioned Good Night, Dorothy Kilgallen, a book proposal by Paul Alexander that ties the syndicated columnist's death to her investigation of the JFK assassination. Kilgallen notably was the only person to interview Lee Harvey Oswald's killer, Jack Ruby, except she died mysteriously thereafter, presumably without discovering that Watchmen's Comedian was on the grassy knoll. Palin and Biden: Debating the Debate

Come on, you don't see the chemistry?
Photo: Getty Images

Last night America sat down to watch Joe Biden debate Sarah Palin, in what Washington Post scribe Dana Milbank called "what may have been the most public I.Q. test ever administered." The expectations for Biden weren't high (would he commit a gaffe? Would he bully her?), but no bar could have possibly been lower than that for Palin, who was coming off of a string of nervous, evasive, and at times nonsensical interviews with Katie Couric. Biden was wonky, confident, and showed off his experience, but he rarely connected with the camera. Palin avoided answering many of moderator Gwen Ifill's questions and repeated her talking points relentlessly, but her eye contact with the camera and her chipper folksy mannerisms (the winking!) made her more fun to watch.

It was a performance we could have predicted — Biden did better on the issues but by being funnier and much stronger than expected, Palin scored major points for herself. Who won? Maybe nobody — it wouldn't be a bad thing if the vice-presidents started to matter less in this election. But just as we could have also predicted, our punditry is split — left-leaning writers hand the trophy to Biden, and conservatives give the nod — and wink — to Palin.

• Though much of the pundit conversations immediately after the debate were about Sarah Palin, Mark Halperin points out that insta-polls of uncommitted voters showed a firm Biden win. [Time]

• "It really was the Tale of Two Debates," writes Andrew Romano. "In one ring was Sarah Palin battling Tina Fey's impression of Sarah Palin. In the other was Joe Biden battling John McCain." [Stumper/Newsweek]

• Lynn Sweet observed that Palin "seemed to be reading off some papers on her podium." [Sun-Times]

• E.J. Dionne pointed out that early on last night, Palin admitted she might not answer some questions as moderator Gwen Ifill posed them. "This was the Alaska governor's way of saying she was going to stick to the talking points she had stuffed into her head, no matter what the subject." [WP]

• Chris Cillizza noted that there were a lot of numbers and facts thrown around (and disputed). "Average voters are savvy: they know that numbers and figures can be twisted to a partisan purpose and, therefore, tend to discount the laundry lists of statistics that politicians throw around in debates," he points out. This was echoed by CNN's riveting audience meter of uncommitted Ohio voters — when Biden and Palin got into these squabbles, those little green and red lines plummeted. [Fix/WP]

• Pete Wallsten looks beyond the debate at McCain's increasingly bad poll numbers. "While Republicans will surely declare victory in the debate (and breathe deep sighs of relief), major questions remain for the GOP ticket." [LAT]

• John Miller was struck by what Palin missed, including an early chance to discuss health care and an opportunity to chat up missile defense (an Alaskan strength). He also took exception to her point about boosting school funding — "Huh? If conservatives believe anything about education, it's that higher spending doesn't equal better schools." [Corner/National Review]

• David Kusnet noted that people not expecting much from Palin before the debate were ignoring her "emotional intelligence." "For all her unfamiliarity with many issues — and the unpopularity of her positions — Palin’s performance made sense emotionally, with one glaring exception." That exception being, of course, when Biden choked up about raising his son as a single dad after the death of his wife and daughter. Palin completely ignored this moment and did not reach out to him over their shared love of family. [Plank/National Review]

• Jonah Goldberg took issue with some of Biden's facts, and how his "gravitas" helped him seem believable. [Corner/National Review]

• Ari Berman points out that because the debate did not include follow-up questions, Palin was able to stick to "boilerplate" and not "stumble as she did during the Katie Couric interviews." [Nation]

• Andrew Sullivan agreed. "What we need now is a press conference with Palin. She needs to be forced to answer follow-ups." [Atlantic]

• Jon Cohen notes that network reaction polls showed nearly all viewers thought recently controversial moderator Gwen Ifill treated both "fairly." She was the third winner in this. [WP]

Bailoutmania

So. The Big Bailout. The Rescue. The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. (That's what we are calling it now you know.) So much has happened! It's been not even three weeks since we first heard of this thing, and we have all aged years. Let's recap.

Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson wrote a two-page bill asking for a lot of money to buy bad mortgage-related assets from weakened financial companies so they can raise fresh capital and resume normal lending operations.

Shirtless wanted $700 billion, to be exact. Although it wasn't exact — he just picked that number because it was "a really large number." Naturally, many people were like, "That's crazy! Hell to the no, we're not giving those dang fools on Wall Street any more of our money to throw around!" But then Dow plunged, and a lot of people were like, "Oh no? Maybe we should give Paulson that $700 billion? But let's add just a few checks and balances."

Everyone on Capitol Hill went nuts deciding what to add. And finally, they came up with a bill. They proudly sent it to the House this past Monday. But the House was oddly stuck on the first point, which is that as far as they could see, they were still signing their constituents' hard-earned paychecks over to Wall Street. And so they voted against the bill. Then the market really tanked. So the Senate took the package back to fix it up for the House, meaning they added some items to it that they specifically thought would win votes.

Such as:

1. A provision raising the limits on bank deposits insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, from the current $100,000 to $250,000.
2. $150.5 billion in tax cuts and breaks, including: incentives for clean energy; tax breaks for businesses and individuals affected by natural disasters like floods and tornadoes; extensions and expansions of expiring tax credits, such as for research and development and small businesses; and lifting the income threshold at which people are affected by the Alternative Minimum Tax, which is supposed to be only for rich people who can afford it.
3. A suggestion that the Securities and Exchange Commission should suspend mark-to-market accounting, a technical accounting rule that pegs the value of assets to their current market price rather than to the price paid for them. (Banks have been complaining that the strict application of mark-to-market rules have forced them to write down billions' worth of mortgage-related securities for which there are no buyers.)
4. Oh, and they also snuck in the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, a mental-health bill that requires mid-sized and large businesses to provide mental-health benefits comparable to the benefits they provide for physical ailments.

But will any of this sway the very literal naysayers voting in the House tomorrow? Who knows. They are, let's face it, a mixed bag, with many loons and crackpots bumping around in there, and there's no telling what they'll do. Some fiscally conservative Democrats will have enough of a problem with the tax breaks. A group of Republicans has already said they are seeking an amendment that will lower the amount the Treasury Department could spend on the bailout to $250 billion. And some just think the whole thing is immoral.

And then there's the nagging question of whether, after all this, the thing will even work. “I suspect it’s not going to solve our problem,” Charles Jones, a finance professor at Columbia University, told MSNBC. Henry Blodget has a list of reasons why he's not convinced. Which all add up to what Henry Lee, the managing director of a Hong Kong–based investment advisory firm, told the Times today. "It’s a short-term Band-Aid, it doesn’t solve the root of the issue."

Well. Good thing they put that mental health bill in there, then. Because we're probably going to need some help after this.

Kirsten Dunst Not a Fan of Magazines Photoshopping Her Teeth

No, we did not Photoshop her teeth here.
Photo: Newscom

At last night's Soho House party for the launch of the movie tie-in edition of the book How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, Kirsten Dunst cannily demonstrated the title of the film adaptation in which she co-stars. It started out amiably enough when we asked the obvious question: What's the best way to lose friends and alienate people? "Be yourself and if people don't like you, they lose, right?" she said, sounding every bit like the spunky cheerleader of Bring It On. Feeling emboldened, we brought it on and asked how she felt about her teeth being Photoshopped on this month's cover of Harper's Bazaar. "I haven't heard about it," she said. Holding up her blonde locks and preening for us close-mouthed, she asked, "What do you think? Photoshopped?" We admitted that we would have to see the cover again to jar our memory. "Well, you can't speak before you have knowledge, darling. You're a journalist. Are you just reading enough blogs to get you by?" She called us darling!

"I've had my teeth changed [on a magazine cover] before," she continued. "I wasn't a big fan of that." But she didn't call a publicist to complain. "I'm not that stressed out about that stuff." We were getting pretty stressed out ourselves but had to ask the former child star what she thought of Dakota Fanning's controversial role in Hounddog. Brilliant, Dunst said. But would she have gone to such a dark place (i.e., a rape scene) at such a young age? "Oh, I was in Interview With a Vampire. Did you ever see that one?" she asked, giggling. Well, yes, but — "Oh, so weird. I think this conversation is" — and then Dunst pinched her dainty hand into a shush signal, as when Dr. Evil quiets his minions. And with that we had newfound appreciation for the depths of her thespian skills. This was Method acting at its finest!

Why Anna Wintour Isn’t Going Anywhere

Still the queen.
Photo: Getty Images

Last month, the Times ran a rather flattering profile of Russian Vogue editor Aliona Doletskaya, who’s successfully brought a shot of glamour to Putin’s people. The press got itself in a tizzy over Dolteskaya’s rising star, and last week the Post reported that an announcer at a Russian GQ event flat-out referred to Doletskaya as “the next editor of American Vogue.” Well, that’s going to cause a bit of a freak-out! But we don’t believe a word of it, and here’s why: For the last decade we've heard rumors of Anna Wintour's imminent demise, and yet, the ice queen lives to rule another season. But names will always be bandied about; herewith, a rundown of all the other recent would-be usurpers to her throne.
