Drona, a not to watch film

After seven years of hiatus, director Goldie Behl makes a comeback on the silver screen with a fantasy superhero film Drona. Shot in soothing locations of Bikaner, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Namibia, the film deals with a fight between good and bad. Here, Abhishek plays an unconventional superhero Drona, a saviour of the world while Kay Kay Menon plays an evil magician Ritz, who wants to kill Drona to have his control over the whole world.

Himesh's Kajraare arrives Feb 2009

Even as promotion is in full swing for Himesh Reshammiya's Karzzzz, the man continues to be busy with other projects as well. The moment he would be through with the release of Karzzzz, Himesh would jump straight into Kajraare, the release date of which has been finalized. The film would be hitting the screens on February 13, just a little more than 100 days after Karzzzz. Says a source close to Himesh, "Shooting for Kajraare has been quite smooth and the film has progressed quite fast. T-Series, which has produced both Karzzzz as well as Kajraare, has been gung ho about both the films, and is ready with the plans for the latter's release. You would soon hear a lot more about Kajraare which is now all set to arrive on February 13." Announced in November last year and kick started in the month of April 2008, Kajraare is special since it sees the Bollywood debut of Mona Laizza, a popular Pakistani TV actress. She plays the lead opposite Himesh in the film, which is touted as an Indo-Pak love story. Apparently, around 70 girls were checked for the role and Mona Laizza was zeroed in. Shot in Lahore, Morocco and Europe, Kajraare is a love story where Himesh would be seen as a lawyer. Needless to say, the film would have music by Himesh Reshammiya himself. The film is directed by Pooja Bhatt who hasn't yet seen box office success in each of her three directed ventures - Paap, Holiday and Dhokha. One hopes though that Himesh's mass appeal coupled with T-Series marketing manages to pull through Kajraare, which is touted to be Pooja's first out and out hardcore commercial entertainer. Coming back to Himesh Reshammiya, in 2009 he would also be seen in Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekkh Mudh Mudh Ke. Also, there is a probability of A Love Issshtory and Hhey Gujju releasing in the same year. "My eyes are set on Karzzzz for the moment. Everyone has gone all out for the film," says Himesh Reshammiya, "With the grace of God, first the response to the music and now the one for the talkie promos has been great as well and the movie in general is generating positive vibes. I can't wait for October 17 to arrive."

"Sanjay Dutt has a much bigger role in Kidnap" - Imran Khan

Imran Khan has changed his image in his second film. Says the nervous second-timer, "After Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, Kidnap was the first script that I actually liked. I decided on doing it instinctively. And I've a completely different role from what I did in Jaane Tu...I admit Sanjay Dutt has a bigger part in my next release Kidnap. And rightly so. He's a much bigger star than me and obviously the focus would be on him. I am thrilled with my part in Kidnap. Incidentally, Sanjay Dutt is also my co-star in Luck. Apparently, there's some kind of a mysterious link between the two of us." Imran was quite intimidated before working with Dutt. "But he turned out to be such a warm and soft-hearted guy. On the first day, I was fumbling and forgetting my lines. He told to relax, that it was okay." Imran's teenybopper fans who think he's the cutest thing since bubblegum are in for a shock when they see him playing a grey role in his second film. "It is a slightly negative role. I am very different from Jaane Tu... in Kidnap. But morality in this film and in real life is a question of perception. Once my fans get to know my character's motivations they won't be shocked. This is what I really liked about Kidnap. It says, 'Hang on for a second. Are you sure you know what's right and what is wrong?' For me morality is totally a matter of which side you are on. I think I play a very interesting guy to watch in Kidnap. People will like me. I think the audience is in the mood to see new and interesting things. In any case I can't go by people's expectations, I'll choose the roles that I like." Imran ends on a positive note. "I had a blast here in SA. I'm working with some great actors here. Mithun Dada is so down to earth and humble. Ravi Kissan Sir and I got along so well. I didn't know who he was until I saw him in 1971. I guess I'm lucky to have a second release so soon after my debut. These things aren't in an actor's end." Imran intends to go on a vacation after shooting Luck and attending to the release of Kidnap. "I've been working non-stop from Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na...then Kidnap. And now Luck. Though we're shooting Luck in a very beautiful place the days are very long. We're shooting very intense action scenes with no breaks."

Fashion recovers 50% investment through endorsements

Click above for more stills Even before Fashion has arrived at theaters, it has already recovered close to half of its costs through endorsements. Budgeted at Rs.17-18 crores, the film has seen brand endorsements worth Rs. 7-8 crores from Lenovo, Sunsilk, Reebok and Kimaya amongst others. Says a highly placed official attached to the film's production house, "We have managed to cut some great deals with the leading brands from the world of fashion (obviously), laptops, hair care and footwear & apparels. They have been prominently placed in Fashion and we have made sure that they don't obscure the basic flow of the film." How profitable has the venture been? "It is a profitable deal for us as well as the brands", confidently says the source, "Fashion is a much hyped film and the kind of class it caters to, the brands can well expect quite a few eyeballs for them from the high end consumers. They understand that Bhandarkar Entertainment is a name to reckon with and it would be mutually beneficial for all the parties to gain from the deal." Talking about the huge expectations that audience has in general from Fashion, Madhur commented, "This is my biggest project till date and though I am a experimental filmmaker, my movies do well at the box office too. It has been such an exciting journey during last 9 months that I have hardly sat down and deliberated on the expectations front. Even today, I am neck deep into the post production of Fashion. It is hardly a few days to go for the 29th October release of the film and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the film is liked by one and all."

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Drona

We've never felt this before. There's a fabulous never-experienced feel to this fantasia. As though it was long-awaited . But it took so long to make its appearance in our cinema because no one thought of it, or wanted to. Goldie Behl dares to dream. He's back after a 7-year hiatus to let us know that Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai was not where his khwaab ended. As matter of fact, the dream begins now. Drona is a feeling not quite overpowering but purposely underplayed and designed to bring the till-now-barred -in-Bollywood Lord Of The Rings genre to our table. On the storyboard Drona must have sounded incredibly impossibly outrageously ambitious. It's a film that starts in the US, moves to the deserts of Rajasthan and makes an exit run into a never-never land where blue flower-petals shower down on the screen creating an area of enchantment and incandescence without letting the spectacle dominate the characters. As far as super-heroes go, the one that Abhishek plays in Drona is somewhat unique. Seething scowling wounded and wanting, Abhishek plays a knight in a shining 'amour'...a romantic at heart and a warrior only by force, he glides across the screen doing some of the most gently persuasive old-world stunts conceived on this side Lord Of The Rings. The action often involves the leading lady. And Priyanka is dynamite. Goldie Behl with unaccentuated but relentlessly persuasive support from cinematographer Samir Arya builds a visual mindscape manifested in moving pictures that suggest a deep bond between the imagination and our traditional cultural representations of abstract art, from desert-based monuments to esoteric weapons that swirl across the breeze and kill only the evil. First ten minutes into this voyage to the realm of our Chandmama-Chandrakanta genre of fantasy literature and we're hooked. From the point when Priyanka, styled like our first full-blown Lara Croft, dressed, and made-up to kill (in more ways than 'won' enters the frame the film takes off with an emphatic élan that just stops short of self-congratulation. Equally arresting is the sequence where our desi dude-ka-dude superhero Drona meets the arch-villain Riz for the first time. The chaos that breaks out and the ensuing chase across the narrow cobbled streets of an unknown foreign country (Prague?) are handled with a delightful eye for comic book bravura that never careens into the caricatural. All through the telling of this tall and stately tale, Behl displays a restrain that goes a long way in giving the product the feel of a fantasy well conceived but never over-drawn. The technique carries the characters fearlessly and fluently. Besides Samir Arya's cinematography, which lends the colors of the imagination a hue of the home-grown, the art direction and the sound design suggest paces of a grace long-forgotten in our cinema where now, rapid fire storytelling is almost always equated with an entertaining cinema. Here the frames are designed to create a harmony between the protagonist's wandering soul, and Nature, which looks down impartially at a world gone to the dogs. The dramatic conflict converges on Abhishek and Kay Kay Menon. The one silent calm from outside, torn, and troubled from within. The other ultra-flamboyant and theatrical, doing what can be called a reincarnation of Mogambo from Mr India an indigenous version of Jack Nicholson's Joker from Batman. The theatrics that underscore the narrative's calm surface don't always work. Kay Kay's character goes way over-the-top into an atmosphere of irredeemable grotesquerie. Fine actor that he is, Kay Kay gives the flamboyant villainy his best shot. Abhishek displays a wounded pride and a lacerated soul through his eyes. He is also immensely adept at handling the action scenes and goes many steps ahead from his earlier films to under-perform the scenes with heartwarming sincerity. Priyanka Chopra's styling and body language suggest a smoldering restless sensuality. But the drama converges on the hero and the villain as they battle it out by the most traditional definition of cinematic dada-giri. By the time, we approach the climax Drona has established its claim at taking a confident stab at a genre never done before. What it fails to do is to take that genre into the highest realm of creativity where the characters would have instinctively become children rather than casualties of the mythology and fantasy that Goldie Behl embraces with ample affection but not enough of that quality of connectivity with the audience that superheroes have always achieved with the audience. At the end you feel an empathy for the sword-wielding Drona who can't fly through the air. And that's what makes this super-hero so vulnerable and human. Watch Drona for Abhishek's reined-in performance as a reluctant hero, and his crackling hissing but ambivalent chemistry with Priyanka. And for the use of special effects not to overpower but nourish the plot that strides across two continents and cultures with confident steps.
