Peter Dundas to Helm Pucci

The rumors are true! Peter Dundas will take over as head designer of Pucci when Matthew Williamson's contract expires next month. Dundas currently designs for French furrier Revillon and used to helm Emanuel Ungaro. Though he's been knee deep in pelts, Dundas has tangoed with plenty a print thanks to stints at the houses of flashy Roberto Cavalli and likewise dynamic Christian Lacroix. Dundas will start at Pucci October 1 so his first collection for the house will walk for fall's Fashion Week. Williamson reportedly left Pucci to spend more time on his own label. He's opening his first U.S. store in the meatpacking district in early 2009 and has zero excuse to pull a Topshop.

New Plan! Government to Save Us by Buying Up Bad Debt With Our Money

Remember that check the Bush administration gave us earlier this year? How quaint that seems now. We still haven't even gotten ours! But when we do, we're going to hang on to that cash, since the government has now officially decided to use our tax money to buy hundreds of billions of dollars in distressed assets. We'll get to hear all about the genius plan they've ginned up around 10 a.m. [WSJ]

Hope That America Will Turn Out Okay Comes From an Unusual Corner

Photo: Getty Images

That's right. Don't worry, people, everything will turn out fine in the end. America will pull itself together after being torn asunder by a vicious political battle and mind-boggling economic woes. How do we know? Because this week Alex and Cynthia Rodriguez settled their divorce. Amicably.

How could this not give us hope? Sure, we're experiencing the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression, and Congress is scrambling to shoulder everyone else's burden. World markets are howling in terror, yes, but did any of them go to Paris and pretend to have an affair with Lenny Kravitz? No. Sure, Obama has stepped up his destructive negative rhetoric to match McCain's, but did he get caught in a series of late-night "Kaballah" rendezvous with Madonna? No. Let's keep some perspective, people. If problems like these can be solved, anything can.

Owen Wilson Sucks

Photo: Getty Images

Drillbit Dracula: Spyglass has set Owen Wilson to star in Blood Brothers, a buddy comedy about a man and a vampire. As with all Owen Wilson comedies, we won't know how excited to get until they announce whether his costar will be Jackie Chan, Vince Vaughn, or an adorable puppy. [Bloody Disgusting]

Faris Splits: In an interview with our friends at Moviehole, House Bunny's Anna Faris revealed that she's pulling out of Brian Grazer's Linda Lovelace biopic about the making of Deep Throat, saying the role would be "a bit too heavy" for her right now. [Moviehole]

Three Joneses: David Duchovny, Demi Moore, and Amber Heard will play a fake family in The Joneses, a dramedy about a seemingly perfect family that's actually just a marketing ploy to introduce new products to suburbia. Good lucking selling sexual satisfaction, Duchovny. [HR]

Who Watches the Watchmen's Producers?: Apparently Alan Moore's worst nightmare has been discussed behind closed doors, as Watchmen's Patrick Wilson tells MTV that, in regards to a sequel, "it's been talked about. Financially, they like to do that." That's crazy talk, Night Owl. Studios make sequels for the love of artistic integrity! E.g., Beverly Hills Ninja 2. [MTV]

Watson Watch, Day 23: Entertainment Weekly's Nicole Sperling is reporting that Jude Law is the latest actor who finds himself in talks to play Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie's now officially titled Sherlock Holmes. Check back tomorrow and see if Law's joined the ever-growing list of fake-Internet-Watsons that includes Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, Tom Cruise, Dom DeLuise, Brett Favre, and Gallagher (Sherlock: "It's elementary, my dear Watson. Wait, what are you doing?" [A watermelon SPLATS]). [Hollywood Insider/EW]

Review: Gervais gives edge to 'Ghost Town'

Is Ricky Gervais movie star material? The "Office" actor has been very careful in doing Hollywood material, but "Ghost Town" fits very well. It's a romantic comedy with enough of an offbeat edge to make it worth seeing -- largely thanks to Gervais.

Celebrities Walk in Naomi Campbell's Fashion Show

Naomi Campbell
Photo: Getty Images

Last night in London Naomi Campbell put on a fashion show to benefit a charity that aids pregnant women and newborns around the world. Rather than go the predictable route and cast a bunch of models, however, she rang up her celebrity buddies like Vivienne Westwood and asked them to walk the show. They obliged, of course (insert your own joke about Naomi getting mad if they didn't and throwing things here). But Naomi would be remiss if she didn't treat the deep-pocketed crowd to her own illustrious catwalk. So she hit the runway a modest three times. See her, Vivienne Westwood, Tyson Beckford, and more in the slideshow.

‘Times’ Board Member Scott Galloway Thinks Newspaper Business ‘Is a Shitty Business’

Scott Galloway has a problem, other than this picture.
Photo: Getty Images

Sheelah Kolhatkar introduces us to the Harberts, the southern gothic family whose money funded Harbinger Capital Partners, the hedge fund that bought a large stake in the New York Times late last year, in the October issue of Portfolio. She also got a little face time with our man, Stern Business School professor, activist investor, and vagilante Scott Galloway, whom Harbinger nominated to sit on the Times board.

“Let me be clear: I think the newspaper business is a shitty business,” Galloway tells me, in his spartan little office at Harbert Management during an interview that took place before he became actively involved with the company. “The Sacramento Bee, the Chicago Tribune—I think a lot of those newspapers are fucked.” Not the Times, however: “The New York Times is like Yahoo with content,” Galloway says.

Well, the people at Yahoo are going to be pissed about that.

One Day, Hudson Morgan and Bam Margera Went to North Korea

Hudson Morgan
Photo: Patrick McMullan

Do you ever read Hudson Morgan's "Status Report" column in Men's Vogue? You should. Basically, Mogue sends Hud to the most amazing parties, vacation spots, and celebrity/society clusterfucks around the world, and he drily chronicles his experiences. Memorable highlights include the time he was told to "stop hating" on Zack Braff in St. Barts for wearing pirate pants, or when he picked on Cy Twombly's accent one time at the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. But this latest effort, in which he tags along with the Gumball 3000 rally across Asia and Europe, really takes the cake — particularly when he and other racers like Bam Margera and Alfonso Ribeiro (yes, Carlton Banks) make a pit stop in North Korea.

From his report, when the Gumballers are treated to a spectacle of Kim John Il's citizenry:

The Mass Games, or Arirang — an aggressively choreographed gymnastic spectacle featuring 100,000 performers — is basically a Super Bowl halftime show of North Korean team spirit: One side of the stadium flashes placards of nationalistic scenes while costumed men, women, and children wave flags, sing, and dance in military formation. Suddenly the lights go dark and a figure in a yellow bodysuit climbs into what looks like a giant slingshot. As the crowd gasps, the performer is catapulted 200 feet through the air, sailing through a hanging hoop before landing in a net far below. Motioning to Bam Margera, one of the Brit motorists mutters, "You can just see the Jackass guys' minds whirring."

Yeah, there's more, including a visit to the only karaoke bar in North Korea, where Ribiero sings "Ebony and Ivory" to some vaguely terrified hotel employees. You have to read it to believe it.

In the Flesh, Swell Season — the Band From ‘Once’ — As Sexually Tense You’d Imagine

Irglova, strategically placed guitar, Hansard.
Photo: FilmMagic

Last night at Central Park's Rumsey Playfield, Swell Season — the band made up of the two stars of the 2007 indie musical sensation Once — almost blew their wad immediately. After opening with an acoustic, blessedly foghorn-free cover of Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic," Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova went right into their own "I Will Always Love You," performing their Oscar-winning duet "Falling Slowly." Hansard, playing guitar, sidled up to Irglova on the piano bench, and they sang their heartbreaking anthem close enough to make out. Just like in the film, they resisted the urge. Yet their voices — his throat-ripping Joe Cocker lament, her vaguely Eastern European whisper — bubbled with the same uncanny chemistry. Was it already time to go home and cry ourselves to sleep? But Once's sweeping pop-folk soundtrack is much more than its famous single, and the evening was carried by songs to distract us from financial apocalypse and Sarah Palin. Despite the wistful music, Hansard was funny as hell, exhorting the audience to sing along and telling stories to put Harry Chapin to shame: Their band doesn't have a drummer because theirs got diverted to Italy, then got married; someone recently approached Hansard for an autograph, explaining, "It's for my friend. She thinks you're great. She's dead."

Model Karlie Kloss Is All Grown Up

From left, Karlie in McQ; Vivienne Westwood Gold Label.
Photo: Jason Kibbler for Dazed & Confused

Readers, the model you see here is 16 years old. Not only that she just turned 16 yesterday. (Okay, technically her birthday's August 3, but she's freaking 16 so what's a few weeks?) We almost didn't recognize her when we were flipping through September's Dazed & Confused the other day and landed on this spread. In case you can't recognize her, she's the one with the infamous runway walk: Karlie Kloss. Sure, we've seen her on plenty of runways done up in fabulous Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, and Calvin Klein. But she always had that young-girl-playing-dress-up quality about her. Now she looks like she's eating Fashion Wheaties for breakfast every morning. See more shots from the spread here.

Market Goes Out on a High Note

The last hour of trading today saw a turn for the better in the stock market, the Dow moved up 408.41, the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index was up 4.1 percent, Goldman was holding steady, and Morgan Stanley stock was even up 5 percent. That heartening speech by President Bush must really have worked! Ha, no, just kidding, no one thinks that, although the various ways in which the government is intervening, such as Andrew Cuomo's announcement that he has started a "wide-ranging investigation" into short-selling in the financial sector did seem to bolster investors' moods. Is it over? Eh, probably not. But the positive upswing means we are officially taking away the moniker of Torturous Thursday and renaming today Tumultuous Thursday, and we will have commemorative day-of-the-week underwear made just as soon as we feel comfortable taking our money out of gold futures.

Video: Tyra’s Crazy, Weave-tastic ‘ANTM’ Makeovers

Project Runway wasn't the only reality-TV show luring viewers to the tube by making over young ladies last night. Tyra Banks gave her burgeoning protégés makeovers on America's Next Top Model too. And, well, it was epic. Not only did Tyra put on her foofiest golden-fairy outfit and wave around a magic wand while proclaiming there can only be one Angelina Jolie, she brought in the stylist Miss Jay calls the "Weave Mastress." And boy, did she put her to work. Watch after the jump and maybe it'll all make sense to you.

Jamal Crawford Tells You How Excited to Be About the Knicks

Jamal Crawford, making things happen.
Photo: Getty Images

We’re not really sure how much we should be looking forward to the upcoming Knicks season. Yes, there’s a new coach and a new GM, but the nucleus of Isiah Thomas's roster is, for now, more or less the same. Luckily, Jamal Crawford is keeping a blog for Newsday, and he’s gone through the trouble of breaking the team down, player by player, based on their preseason workouts. After the jump, see how excited you should be about the Knicks, based solely on how excited Jamal is.

You Should Be Completely Psyched!
Allan Houston is, hilariously, attempting yet another comeback, but Crawford is onboard. “He looks a lot better this time!” Oh. How pumped is Crawford for the rejuvenated Houston? In total, he writes 53 words on the former Knick, and includes eight exclamation points. As for those who will actually make the team, Crawford likes Nate Robinson (“still a blur”) and David Lee, specifically because he’s now shooting threes. Could the outside shooting of Lee, a career zero percent from beyond the arc, be the answer? Jamal thinks so!

You Should Be a Little Excited!
Mardy Collins is “a really good defender” and “lost some weight.” Unfortunately, Collins's weight is less of a concern than, ahem, some other people's. Jamal Crawford is merely “making things happen,” but we’re sure he’s just being modest.

You Should Have Your Doubts!
Coach Mike D’Antoni’s up-tempo style “will be a transition at first” for Eddy Curry, because “he’ll be on the perimeter a lil bit more.” Even Crawford seems to realize that this is a terrible idea. Then there’s Zach Randolph: “Him and Eddy have had some nice match-ups. They look better on opposite teams … (hahahah, just playing!...).” He’s not playing; that’s code for “Seriously, we haven’t traded him yet?”

You Should Not Be at All Excited!
Crawford thinks that Jared Jefferies will “go back to the Jared he was in Washington,” and that Quentin Richardson is working on his handle and will “play like he did in Phoenix.” So even Crawford is imagining them on someone else’s team. It seems worth noting that he doesn’t say a word about Stephon Marbury, the guy the team is allegedly built around. Meaning that Marbury isn't working out with his teammates. Take that however you'd like.

Why Is Gandhi Singing With Minor Threat?

He's played Mahatma Gandhi, made out with Mary-Kate Olsen, and starred in The Love Guru, and now, in what we can only assume is a desperate bid to have a stranger career than Nicolas Cage, Ben Kingsley is dressing as Ian MacKaye and performing Minor Threat's "Minor Threat." Why? We have absolutely no idea, but we just saw this video on the Daily Swarm and it's damn near the weirdest thing we've ever seen. We guess it's some sort of promotion for Mean magazine, but, as for how or why it was made, we simply have no answers.

The Plaza Fights Back Against Andrei Vavilov

Sorry, but only John McClane can stop him now.
Photo: Ruth Fremson/The New York Times/Redux

Today, lawyers for El-Ad Properties sent us a lawsuit they just filed in New York Supreme Court against Russian financier Andrei Vavilov, accusing him of defamation. Vavilov notably sued El-Ad last week over a $53.5 million penthouse he had partially paid for, which he deemed was not up to promised standards of space and luxury. (Somewhat undermining El-Ad's claim that everything was delivered as promised, yesterday a second penthouse buyer sued the developers over similar complaints.)

El-Ad alleges that Vavilov is merely trying to get out of paying out the rest of his contractually obligated payments for the apartment. The legal papers call his suit "a sham" and "improper and abusive." That's some tough talk for people who don't know how to do a proper window treatment!

Quite frankly, this lawsuit makes us love Vavilov even more, despite the fact that we don't know that much about him. Some highlights:

• "At the time Defendants entered into the aforesaid purchase contracts, Vavilov stated in no uncertain terms that he wished to own the largest and most expensive apartment at the Plaza."
• Vavilov allegedly didn't complain about the two conjoined apartments until he came to visit with his seemingly awesome actress wife Maryana Tsaregradskaya, who said "in substance that they were simply not large enough for her tastes."
• "Also during this visit, Ms. Tsaregradskaya stated to the El-Ad employees that she wanted to have the biggest apartment in the Plaza."
• "The defamatory statements set forth herein were motivated by Defendants' actual malice, ill will, [or] personal spite."

Hmmm. An enormously wealthy, perhaps adorably petty, Russian billionaire with a pretentious young actress wife who will stop at nothing to get what they want? It's like the beginning of every single action movie that came out in the eighties!

Jamey Johnson and Lee Ann Womack, Achy and Breaky in All the Right Places

Photo: Melissa Hom

Jamey Johnson is a dark-hearted country beardo who sings like he's just been punched in the gut. His newish album, That Lonesome Song, is a superlative tapestry of bummers bemoaning his demons, Jesus, and his ex. That said, there couldn't have been a weirder setting for the hirsute singer's New York debut than Jazz at Lincoln Center — an auditorium in the Time Warner Center that, from the inside, feels like a glass-plated spaceship hovering over Columbus Circle. Yet while the invite-only crowd was pungent with designer perfume, Johnson's songs still managed to conjure the reek of skunked Budweiser. During his opening number, "High Cost of Living," he furrowed his brow and moaned as if sprawled out on the barroom floor: "I had a job and a piece of land / And my sweet wife was my best friend / But I traded that for cocaine and a whore."

As if we had any soul left to crush, headliner Lee Ann Womack tried to out-sad the opener with songs from her forthcoming disc, Call Me Crazy. She doled out downers in a sparkly dress that appeared to be sequined in stainless steel — perhaps to deflect any mascara-stained teardrops. "I'm past the point of give-a-damn and all my tears are cried," she declared plaintively on "Either Way." But where Johnson groaned, Womack soared, delivering melancholic crescendos that were as exhilarating as they were bruising. Who knew getting your heart mashed into sawdust on a Wednesday night could be this much fun?

Patrick Healy and Eugene Mirman on the Liberal Media ‘Conspiracy’ and Why It’s Strange That the Wall Street Meltdown Has Swung Polls

Photo: Courtesy New York Times

Every day until November 4, a series of writers and thinkers will discuss the election over instant messenger for nymag.com. Today, New York Times political reporter Patrick Healy and comedian Eugene Mirman discuss forgetting the things Sarah Palin named her children after, what Americans really want, and Bette Midler for V.P.

E.M.: Okay: What is your favorite branch of government? Mine is Congress!

P.H.: Congress is a pretty interesting beast, no? We rarely have the presidential nominees of both parties come from the Senate. In a year when there is such unhappiness with Washington … Does that strike you as weird?

E.M.: It does seem weird. I also like how people keep saying that Sarah Palin has more executive experience than all three candidates.

P.H.: Though, apparently, she isn't capable of running a major American corporation…

E.M.: Well, running a company is complicated. It's not as important to be likable or a ballbuster. Though I would love to have a maverick reformer running HP.

P.H.: "Maverick reformer" — who comes up with these titles?!?

E.M.: The same person who named Xanax, I assume.

P.H.: I want THAT job!

E.M.: You can start a branding/naming company. That's what makes America great. Along with all our individual rights.

P.H.: That's where the real money is.

E.M.: I think Obama picking Biden is very responsible. But it's just not as exciting. He should have picked Bette Midler. Then it would have stolen the headlines.

I can barely remember what Palin named all her children after anymore. And two weeks ago I could tell you that Bristol was a bay in Alaska or something.

P.H.: Ha-ha, information overload! How is Obama looking to you these days?

E.M.: I like Obama a lot. But I've always liked him because he seemed to me like a pragmatist. I know that he is liberal, but I think he is in a very responsible way. Whereas McCain has had several image makeovers. I can guess at what kind of president he would be, but I'm not really sure.

P.H.: Did you read his books? After his convention speech in 2004, his books were my main way into his thinking.

E.M.: I haven't read the books by either McCain or Obama. I try not to read, because then I would have actionable information. I've read lots of articles and such, and followed it reasonably closely. But I'm just a citizen and comedian, so I think I'm about as informed as my place in society demands.

P.H.: An understandable policy.

I wonder if Borders reports our book purchases to the Department of Homeland Security … I should know these things, as a reporter!

E.M.: One way to find out what Borders reports is to buy lots of books and magazines about making bombs and building rocket ships and see what happens.

P.H.: Good call … er, maybe not.

What do you think of the media coverage of the race right now? And/or the coverage by the NYT, where I work?

E.M.: I like the New York Times a lot, but I'm a liberal Jew. I'm part of whatever conspiracy you're part of. I think a lot of the non-newspaper coverage seems to be about where the election stands. But I think that's because people like to follow the horse race of it.

P.H.: Yeah, we try to stay away from that, in part because it's cotton-candy coverage and in part because it's so hard to "declare" where the race is with any precision.

E.M.: What do you think of the coverage?

P.H.: I was struck by our story this morning on the new NYT poll of the race. While it was mostly focused on issues, it also had horse-race numbers — which basically were the same as before the conventions. All the sound and fury of the last three weeks, and the horse-race numbers are largely unchanged!

E.M.: It's amazing to me that the economy having trouble in the last week has changed the polls, as if the economy was awesome three weeks ago.

P.H.: I'd imagine people would be super anxious about losing their houses, more than the Dow Jones numbers tanking.

E.M.: You'd think. Maybe if the super wealthy are in trouble, it makes everyone nervous. Where will the money trickle down from when China owns everything? I think I just wrote a rhetorical poem!

Have you been traveling a lot to battleground states in covering the election? What sorts of people have you spoken to and what's on their minds?

P.H.: I was in Virginia yesterday, which is still considered a battleground by the Obama campaign. A lot of voters were talking about high interest rates for college loans; the rising costs of nursing-home care for their elderly relatives; the price of gas. One woman said she and her husband were doing just fine on their two incomes five years ago, but today they are living paycheck to paycheck.

I heard NOTHING about Iraq. Or abortion rights, gay rights, guns, etc.

"It's the economy, stupid."

E.M.: Yes. People need food before they prevent gay marriage. It takes energy.

P.H.: That makes sense to me.

Filmmaker David Bond Flunks Art Class

With school finally back in session, parents are once again fielding "Am I normal?"–type questions from their kids. To them, we dedicate this sweet little film from Britain, Lions Are Green, about a young colorblind boy who draws a green lion in class and gets called out for it. Director David Bond effectively conveys children’s curious fear of the different, and the inevitable mimicking that follows. Winner of numerous awards, including Best Short Film in the BBC’s Night of Many Stars, it’s the kind of film that avoids the typical pitfall of syrupy sweetness, thanks to an extraordinary lead performance and some simple, no-nonsense direction.

Publisher Keeps ‘Vogue’ Brand on Trend

Tom Florio, ideas man.
Photo: Getty Images

Print advertising is out. Online video advertising is in! Because just like fashionistas, advertisers want to be trendy too. Online TV has done wonders for Vogue, whose ad pages are down but which still rakes in cash with the help of new Internet show Model.Live, which has been viewed more than a million times. Advertisers like Express, which sponsors the show, are drawn to the medium because they can do things like plop an online store next to the TV screen. Interestingly, the editorial staff of Vogue — Anna Wintour included — had nothing to do with conceiving the show. It's the brainchild of Vogue publisher Tom Florio, who, Forbes reports, is "worried about keeping the brand relevant for the next generation of readers." He conceived Model.Live with his 16-year-old daughter in mind.

"I'm comfortable with it, because I feel that the principals of what we're doing are based on the same principals as the brand," he says. If Wintour objected to the content, he says he would kill it. A Conde Nast spokesperson said that Wintour understands Vogue.TV is run by the business department and stays informed about its programs. Wintour is attending Fashion Weeks in Paris and Milan and was unavailable for comment.

So the publisher of Vogue is maintaining Vogue's relevancy more so than La Wintour? We suppose it's not that shocking. Can you really imagine Anna indulging in a little YouTube over lunch?

The New Bond Theme: Bad!

Based on previously leaked evidence in the recent Coke Zero ad, we had pretty low expectations for the Jack White–Alicia Keys theme to Quantum of Solace, which we suppose was to our advantage: The genuine article popped up online last night, and, even by the standards set by recent Bond themes, this one's kinda bad. "Another Way to Die" sounds like Icky Thump–era White Stripes, but with even fewer hooks and way more yelling. At least we have Amy Winehouse's theme to look forward to!

‘Synecdoche, New York’ Trailer: Charlie Kaufman Makes Us Happy and Sad

Tagline: There are millions of people in the world, and none of those people is an extra. They're all leads in their own stories.

Translation: There is almost no way this movie is as normal as that makes it sound.

The Verdict: The trailer for Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut wisely avoids trying to communicate too many details of its batshit crazy plot (basically, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a theater director who creates a one-to-one, real-time stage model of his own life), going instead for a funny, Wes Anderson–type whimsical feel. And despite reoccurring shots of Hoffman in old-man makeup and lines like "death comes faster than you think," it almost manages to convince us we'll be able to cheerily enjoy the film and its awesome supporting cast (Catherine Keener, Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams). Until the end of the trailer, that is, when one of the actors in the stage re-creation pipes up with the bizarre "When are we gonna get an audience in here? It's been seventeen years." On second thought, this is probably going to make us cry.
