Source: Google News - Sci/Tech | 18 Sep 2008 | 12:58 pm Bewkes on Bebo: Well, That Was $850 Million Well Spent … Maybe [Digital Daily]
Portfolio: And if you had to do it all over again … would you pay $850 million for Bebo? Jeff Bewkes: Maybe. I’ll tell you why I can’t give you an answer. Because when you’re doing an acquisition in an auction, the core purpose of the auction is to try to get as much buyer and competing interest. When you look back at it, you then have to reveal—which I can’t to you—what I know about the other bidders. And you learn more of it after than before. The reason we said—when we kept being pressed by people, when they said “did you overpay or not?” we said we don’t know—is if our plans work out, we did not overpay. But then somebody says it’s compared to what you could’ve paid. If our plans work out less well than we thought, we would have overpaid by a few hundred million dollars. I’m not sitting here now—I don’t know if that’s the case—under a high case, we’ve actually made a lot of money on it. So it’s really too early to say. It’s kind of like saying, did Google overpay for YouTube? What was that number—$1.6 billion? They haven’t monetized that yet. Source: Google News - Sci/Tech | 18 Sep 2008 | 11:26 am Who’s Your Mergers & Acquisitions Consultant SanDisk? Jerry Yang? [Digital Daily]
Is SanDisk out of its mind? On Tuesday the company rejected a $5.9 billion acquisition bid by Samsung Electronics. Apparently, the company feels $26-a-share cash — an 80 percent premium over its Monday close — undervalues the company. And it may have once upon a time. But now that a supply glut has depressed prices for memory cards on which its business is built and its shares have halved in value, well … Really, you have to wonder what the company is thinking. Anyway, Samsung isn’t taking no for answer. In a Wednesday a letter to SanDisk CEO Eli Harari, Samsung CEO Yoon-Woo Lee argued that a merger is a financial win for both companies. Our many meetings and conversations over the last several months have served to confirm for us that a combined Samsung-SanDisk would have a superior global brand, an unparalleled technology platform and the scale and resources to drive convergence in the marketplace. With SanDisk’s innovative culture and technology leadership and Samsung’s scale, leadership in manufacturing and execution, and strong systems and consumer electronics segment knowledge, the combined company would be well positioned to accelerate the adoption of flash memory technology in new markets. We can also establish the platforms and capabilities necessary to position flash as the preferred vehicle for delivery and storage of a wide variety of content, such as film, in a way that would not be possible for either of our companies alone. As we have seen in recent months, markets have become more turbulent and global economic trends are negative. At the same time the competitive environment remains challenging. To survive and compete in these times we will each need to leverage our resources and rely upon a strong balance sheet to fund critical investment and development through good times and bad. Separately investing in necessary state of the art facilities will be a significant tax on your business in the near term. In addition, reliance on IP and enforcing it is a costly and uncertain business for both our companies. Faced with these challenges, now is the time to merge. A persuasive argument. But not in the eyes of SanDisk which seems determined to play Yahoo to Samsung’s Microsoft and, in Lee’s words, “continues to cling to unrealistic expectations on both its standalone market value and an appropriate merger price.” Source: All Things Digital | 18 Sep 2008 | 11:23 am How SEC rule-exemptions led to the Wall St collapseBarry Ritholz sez,Special exemptions from the SEC are in large part responsible for the huge build up in financial sector leverage over the past 4 years -- as well as the massive current unwindHow SEC Regulatory Exemptions Helped Lead to Collapse Source: Boing Boing | 18 Sep 2008 | 11:17 am Learn About the World Battery &Amp; Fuel Cell Chemicals and Materials MarketReportlinker.com announces that a new market research report related to the Chemicals industry industry is available in its catalogue.Source: RedOrbit News - Science | 18 Sep 2008 | 11:00 am More Farmers Fighting High Costs With High Technology ; As Fertilizer And Seed Prices Double Or Triple, Some County Farmers Turn To Gps And Precision Applications To Control Costs.By Stephen Zook A. It has been almost two months since Microsoft said it would pick someone to helm the part of the business that was run by former exec Kevin Johnson, who left in July after the software giant’s bid for Yahoo failed. A decision could come at any time, although Ballmer is reportedly intent on getting exactly the right person for the job. But, by now, most inside the company had expected him to make the most obvious internal choice of SVP Brian McAndrews, who came to Microsoft (MSFT) via its $6 billion acquisition of aQuantive. McAndrews now runs Microsoft’s Advertising and Publisher Solutions Group. Longtime digital SVP of Strategic Partnerships Yusuf Medhi has been seen as #2 candidate. He could also be part of a team that includes both he and McAndrews. Many sources have said that they expect McAndrews to leave, if he is not given the top digital post. But many sources report that Ballmer still remains more intent on hiring someone outside the company, with the idea that such a person could better reenergize Microsoft’s moribund Internet efforts and bring in a fresher perspective. According to sources, his favored external pick has been former Yahoo (YHOO) COO Dan Rosensweig, who has turned down his offer. Ballmer has also been interested in former Facebook top exec Owen Van Natta, who might be a dark horse in the race. In addition, Ballmer has previously queried former AOL head Jon Miller, who was also in line to be on the board of Yahoo, until he was nixed due to a non-compete agreement in place with the online service’s owner Time Warner (TWX). Miller told Ballmer he was not interested in the job. “Ballmer is burning up the Rolodex and coming up empty,” said one person who is familiar with Microsoft. “But he is still looking outward.” Other sources said Ballmer (pictured here) might now be considering a more pure tech exec for the role, rather than a Web exec. Microsoft’s culture is more technical and such a leader might have an easier time leading the company’s Web efforts. Yesterday, Valleywag had an intriguing report that well-regarded former Yahoo tech exec Qi Lu, who was its top search scientist, might be headed to Microsoft. But Li would be more a powerful weapon for Microsoft to fight archrival Google (GOOG) in the search arena, rather than he would be the company’s overall digital leader. Then again, nabbing someone like Li could be part of a larger team Ballmer might be contemplating, made up of both external and internal elements. Time will tell, of course. How much time, though, is anyone’s guess. Indeed, Walt Mossberg and I, as well as the rest of the ATD team, are thrilled that Peter is coming on board at the end of October. He will write a daily still-unnamed new media blog from New York City. Walt and I have long wanted to bring someone on located on the East Coast and away from the echo chamber that Silicon Valley can be, because we both feel the ongoing digital revolution is taking place over a number of key industries all over this country and the world. Peter was our first choice and has been on my must-read list since I began this blog. He is sharp, witty, confident and has the kind of reporting and writing chops that we think are key to giving readers high quality, standards-based content they can trust. With extensive connections across the media, advertising, entertainment and tech sectors, Peter will be doing original reporting, getting scoops, doing interviews, making videos and providing much-needed and clear-headed analysis that he is so well known for. Peter has worked at SAI since mid-2007. The first hire at the startup tech business analysis site, he has focused on enterprise and beat reporting, as well as breaking news. Previously, he spent 10 years as a reporter and editor at Forbes and Forbes.com covering media and technology. There he launched two tech columns, coordinated the video staff and represented Forbes on industry panels and in TV appearances for CNN, BBC and CNBC. Peter was also a staff reporter with City Business in Minneapolis and a staff writer for the Minnesota Real Estate Journal in Bloomington from 1993 to 1997. Earlier, he was a stringer with the Milwaukee Journal and the Milwaukee Sentinel in Madison, Wisconsin. He holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Wisconsin and resides in Brooklyn, New York. More importantly, Peter is a newly minted father, which should give him more practice in prolonged sleep deprivation needed for his blogging. He will begin at ATD on October 27. Along with Walt and me, Peter joins senior news editor John Paczkowski, author of the rocking Digital Daily column, who formerly wrote the San Jose Mercury News’ award-winning blog “Good Morning Silicon Valley,” and Wall Street Journal reporter Katherine Boehret who writes the most excellent weekly Mossberg Solution column. We hope you are as thrilled as we are that Peter is coming soon to the ATD site. As for the Zune, as soon as I went to the Marketplace area on my freshly updated 2nd gen 8G model, it started looking for the network. [Voices]By Kristin Kalning, Games Editor, MSNBC.comParents of video-gaming children, take heart: Your kid is not destined to become an anti-social hermit who lives at home until he’s 35. In fact, a new study shows that all that game time could actually be making him a better citizen. No, this isn’t a study funded by the video-game association. It’s from the respectable folks at the Pew Internet & American Life Project. And it’s the first, says study co-author Joe Kahne, to track the sorts of things kids do when playing–not just how much time they spend playing. “It’s really valuable to focus heavily on the quality of those experiences,” he says. Universal Music Revenues Up 5 Percent Thanks to Downloads [Voices]By Nate Anderson, Senior Editor, Ars TechnicaAfter having $10 billion wiped off their collective worldwide revenues this decade, the four major music labels haven’t had much to crow about. Indie labels, which have banded together to negotiate as Merlin, together are as large as EMI, the smallest of the majors. And even though digital sales are way up across the board, the dramatic declines in more-lucrative CD revenues have led industry observers into Sartre-like levels of existential despair. So why is Jean-Bernard Lévy, CEO of Vivendi and owner of largest label Universal, so upbeat? In an interview with the Financial Times, Levy claimed that his label had already hit bottom and was now slogging uphill (its revenues increased by 5 percent on a constant currency basis in the first half of the year). A six-month trial program launched this week, in the city of Petah Tikva, to tackle the dog mess problem in a high tech way. The program asks dog owners to take their pets to a veterinarian, who then swabs its mouth and collects DNA. The city will use the DNA database it is building to match droppings to a dog and identify its owner. Owners who scoop up their dogs' droppings and place them in specially marked bins will be eligible for rewards of pet food coupons and dog toys. Those who leave the poo on the street face fines. Source: Slashdot | 18 Sep 2008 | 4:16 am Sept. 18, 1830: Horse Beats Iron Horse, for the Time Being1830: America's first native locomotive loses a smackdown race to a draft horse. Embarrassment does not alter the course of history. The city fathers of Baltimore were plenty worried about the financial future of their bustling burg in the late 1820s. The National Road and its eastern connections had linked the city's harbor to Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), on the Ohio River in 1818. The federally financed wagon road was the best, quick link for moving products and raw materials between the young nation's East Coast and the burgeoning interior. But Baltimore was losing business to a new competitor: canals. The Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, gave New York City access to the Great Lakes. The proposed Chesapeake and Ohio Canal would link Washington, D.C., to the Ohio River. (Using Canada's St. Lawrence River to reach the Great Lakes was out of the question: The War of 1812 was a recent memory, and real peace -- and boundary settlements -- were still decades away.) Thomas Carroll of Carrollton (Maryland), a nonagenarian who had signed the Declaration of Independence, led a group to establish the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1828. They planned to beat the competition by jumping to a superior technology. Locomotive steam engines that could move along a track and haul passengers or freight were a new idea. England's first steam railway had just opened in 1825. The B&O intended to haul its carriages with sturdy horses. Or maybe wind power. But the experiments with sail cars were a flop ... literally. It's pretty darn hard to tack on a track, and the cars frequently toppled over. Engineer Peter Cooper thought he could build a locomotive that would impress the B&O barons. His Tom Thumb was basically a miniature locomotive. The boiler was no bigger than those found in large kitchen ranges of the time, and Cooper repurposed musket barrels for boiler tubes. The B&O arranged a demonstration of the Tom Thumb on the 13 miles (of a projected 379) of track it had completed by 1830. Hauling a car full of 40 officials, dignitaries and social notables, the little loco covered the distance from Baltimore to Ellicott Mills in an hour, reaching the unheard-of speed of 18 mph. Gracious! On the return trip, the train was met, on the adjacent track, by a similar open-air passenger car hitched to the best draft horse of a local stagecoach company. The iron horse and bio-horse were to race. The horse-drawn car pulled ahead first, as the tiny engine struggled to build up steam. Then it got going. Soon it was chasing the horse. Then it pulled even, and sure enough the little Tom Thumb pulled ahead. A cheer arose from the crowd. Then: Murphy's Law. A drive band slipped in the locomotive's works. The engine slowed to a crawl. The horse car pulled ahead. By the time Cooper (who was a railroad engineer in both senses of the word) repaired the damage and got the engine going again, it was too late. The horse was too far ahead, and it won the race. Aah, but he who laughs last laughs best. It was easier to increase the horsepower of a steam engine than to up the horsepower of a horse. An improved locomotive reached the ferocious speed of 30 mph in a speed test at Baltimore in 1831. The B&O stopped using horses to pull its carriages on July 31 of that year. The railroad announced a competition for a locomotive specifically designed for the steep, curvy route it contemplated though the Allegheny Mountains. By 1832, the B&O stretched 137 miles west from Baltimore -- the world's longest stretch of railway. Source: Various

This Saturday, September 20th, I will be hosting the first ever American Maker event at the Chicago MSI. And, hold on to your penny purses, it will be free! Free admission to the museum, free admission to American Maker, free admission to LabFest - that is a better deal than a Stouffer's French Bread Pizza two-pack! What can you expect for your hard earned no dollars and no cents? Makers throughout the day will show their homebrew robots, human powered submarines, ingenuous gizmos, a DIY laser cutter, a Kraftwerk-inspired electroluminescent prototype dress and lots more of the extraordinary things people build when they are doing it for the joy of creating. We will get all the Makers up on stage to show off their creations, needle them with questions and, at the end of the day, we will name a the grand prize winner who will walk away with $500 and a feature in Make: Magazine! Repeated exposure to the horror can desensitize individuals and help them stay calm enough to reprocess what happened and get beyond it. Now Clinical Psychologist Albert "Skip" Rizzo has developed a program that has had great success in treating returning troops from Iraq. A soldier with PTSD recounts what happened, and a therapist seated before a computer then creates an environment in the program Virtual Iraq that captures the essential elements of the episode. By donning special goggles, the soldier can see a reenactment and while the simulation starts off relatively tame over the course of several weeks, the therapist monitors the patient 's response and more elements of the episode are introduced until the individual can finally go through an intensely vivid recreation of it without being overpowered by terror. Other programs offered to treat PTSD include Virtual Airplane, Virtual Audiences, Virtual Heights, Virtual Storm, and Virtual Vietnam."Read more of this story at Slashdot.
