Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 16 Sep 2008 | 12:55 pm "This is not my first attempt at comedy" - Shyam BenegalHe is the proud recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards. In the year 2005, he was awarded the highest award in Indian cinema -the Dadasaheb Phalke award for lifetime achievement. Out of the 26 films that he has made in his illustrious career, 7 of them have been awarded the National Award. He is none other than Shyam Benegal, a name synonymous with qualitative cinema. Right from Ankur to Nishant, Manthan to Mandi and Sardari Begum to Zubeidaa, his films have been appreciated by one and all. This prolific filmmaker is now back with his latest project- the light hearted comedy- Welcome to Sajjanpur. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Mr. Shyam Benegal talks about his latest comic flick, the actors he has worked with and also shares his views on what he thinks of the present lot of filmmakers. You don't wanna miss reading this one!!! After making hard-hitting and serious films all your life, you are venturing into a comedy like Welcome to Sajjanpurâ¦why so? I have made all kinds of films. Some have been hard hitting, some have been nostalgic, some were romantic dramas and some have even been patriotic. So there has been a good variety in all the 26 films that I have made so far. Even as far as comedy is concerned, Welcome to Sajjanpur is not my first attempt at comedy. This is in fact my third comedy, the first one was Charandas Chor (way back in 1974), and hen Mandi (1982) was my next comedy. So yes it's been after a considerable time that I am getting back to the comedy genre but it certainly is not my first attempt at comedy. Welcome to Sajjanpur is not my first attempt at comedy. This is in fact my third comedy, the first one was Charandas Chor (way back in 1974), and hen Mandi (1982) was my next comedy. How did the idea for this film come about? The idea for this film came from a little incident that took place, which I found really interesting and funny. One of our peons was not a literate person and he had to get letters written and read them out as well. When he got married, even his wife's letters had to be read out to him and considering that she used to write lovey-dovey stuff, he used to get embarrassed by the fact that his wife's love letters were read out to him by someone else. That formed the base of my story. So is Welcome to Sajjanpur a comedy, a love story or a family entertainer? Welcome to Sajjanpur is a comedy. It's a story set in a village and talks about the only graduate of that village -Mahadev (played by Shreyas) who finds it difficult to get a job anywhere. He realizes that the best way to make a living is to become a letter-writer because literacy in his village is very low. He sits next to the post-office and writes and reads out letters. He plays the central protagonist. The film also has a host of other important characters. So even though it's a romantic comedy, the film is also a satire on the system, politics and the conditions of people living in villages. Even though it's a romantic comedy, the film is also a satire on the system, politics and the conditions of people living in villages. Does the film also send home a message? Seeâ¦if you wish to see a message you will find some but it is not designed as a message giving film per se. What made you cast Shreyas for the lead role, as barring Iqbal, he has yet to make his mark as a solo lead actor? You should see Shreyas in the film and then decide for yourself if he has done justice to the character and film. In his first film Iqbal, he carried the entire film on his shoulders and was brilliant. Even in Welcome to Sajjanpur he has more than lived up to my expectations and has been truly exceptional. How did you zero in on Amrita Rao for the female lead? I needed somebody who is fresh and has a great deal of innocence in her face. I had seen Amrita's film Vivah and felt that she would best suit the part of Kamla. I needed somebody who is fresh and has a great deal of innocence in her face. I had seen Amrita's film Vivah and felt that she would best suit the part of Kamla. The film has a host of talented supporting actors. Could you tell us a little about their roles? There is Divya Dutta who has given an excellent performance as usual. Rajeshwari Sachdev, who has worked with me in many films since 1992, has done a great job. Ila Arun is hysterically brilliant but the real discovery for me has been Ravi Kissen. He is wonderful and has given a great comic performance. Did you have any special workshop for the cast? Noâ¦but I did have some reading sessions for the main cast. Shreyas & Amrita hadn't worked with me, nor had they worked with each other before, so I had some script reading sessions with them so that they could get familiar both with their characters and with each other. Is the film set in a fictional town or does Sajjanpur actually exist? Sajjanpur is a fictional town. But apart from the name it could represent any village in North / Central India. We reconstructed a village (modeled on several small villages in Madhya Pradesh) at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. We needed large open spaces and hence decided on Ramoji. Also the topography and physical features of the land are much closer to where I actually wanted to shoot but couldn't due to logistical problems. The real discovery for me has been Ravi Kissen. He is wonderful and has given a great comic performance. The film was earlier titled Mahadev Ka Sajjanpur. Why the name change? Mahadev Ka Sajjanpur was the working title. The marketing team of UTV felt that Welcome to Sajjanpur was a more welcoming title. Hence we stuck to the latter. The music of the film has been composed by Shantanu Moitra. How do you think has the music evolved? The film has wonderful music. We have 6 songs, out of which 5 have been shot. It is very enjoyable kind of music which you can listen to anytime of the day. There are a couple of dance numbers which have the potential to work even as remixes. You made Zubeidaa in 2001 and Bose-The Forgotten Hero in 2005â¦why such a long gap? After Zubeidaa, it took me four years to release my next film because I had to do a lot of research for Bose. I had to do a lot of location hunting, as the film was shot in different parts of the world and not just India. Between Bose and Welcome to Sajjanpur, there has been a gap of 3 years. There were a couple of projects which fell by the wayside. We worked a lot on it but couldn't put it all together in the right way. Mahadev Ka Sajjanpur was the working title. The marketing team of UTV felt that Welcome to Sajjanpur was a more welcoming title. Hence we stuck to the latter. Do you think the film has mass appeal even in metros or will it find an audience only in the interiors and smaller towns? I hope people in the city will also like it apart from people in the smaller towns. Comedy seems to be the flavor of the season. Which comedy films have you liked in recent times? I can't remember anything that excited me so much in recent times. Probably the last comedy film, which I thoroughly enjoyed, was Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. After that I haven't seen any other film of that quality. Probably the last comedy film, which I thoroughly enjoyed, was Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. After that I haven't seen any other film of that quality. Bollywood has seen a lot of new and young talent in the last few years. Who has managed to catch your fancy among the younger lot? There are many of them who have been really impressive. I don't remember all the names but I do remember the films which I liked. I enjoyed Aamir and Mumbai Meri Jaan in recent times. I also like Vishal Bharadwaj's films. Even Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday was an excellent film. He is a really talented director. What's next after Welcome to Sajjanpur? There are a couple of projects in mind. One will be a comedy and the other will be a musical. We still have to decide on the cast and other details. People have a certain preconceived mindset of a Shyam Benegal films that it is serious cinema and works mainly in the festival circuit. How would you like to welcome people to Sajjanpur? Wellâ¦I think the film should work well with the general public. The subject is universally interesting and at the same time it's very contemporary. It has a good story and that should be the main reason why people should come and check out the film.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 16 Sep 2008 | 12:49 pm "After 6 years, I finally have a success" - Vikram Bhatt6 years after he last tasted success with Awara Paagal Deewana, Vikram Bhatt finally has a reason to smile. His latest horror flick, 1920, has taken a good opening at the box office with decent reviews turning out to be an icing on the cake. No one expected this film starring newcomers (Ranjeesh Duggal, Adah Sharma) to record 100% collections at the box office. Also, Bhatt was never set out to make a master piece which would have fetched him 4 star ratings. This is why a 50%-60% opening on Friday coupled with fair reviews all over followed by good word of mouth has resulted in celebrations time for Vikram Bhatt. Confirms Vikram Bhatt, "Yes, the film has taken a good opening; in fact at quite a few centers even better than Phoonk. The film has been made at a reasonable budget and is already heading for a safe status. By the time the weekend is through, we should see further escalation in collections because Saturday and Sunday are already looking better than Friday." First half of the film has been considered to be slow by quite a few filmgoers while the thrilling finale (lasting close to 30 minutes) has been hailed to be the best of the enterprise. "I know that's the general sentiment", agrees Vikram, "The first half of 1920 has gone in establishing the premise due to which it comes across as relatively slow paced. However, across the centers I am getting feedback that second half is being immensely liked by the audience since the thrills and chills in the last 30 minutes have kept them on the edge of their seats. That's fair actually; what is most important is the culmination to the story. If that is done well, the battle is truly won. I am happy that 1920 is being appreciated by the audience." In comparison, The Last Lear as well as Ru Ba Ru have met with a very poor opening all over, hence improving chances of 1920 even more. Between Awara Paagal Deewana and 1920, Vikram Bhatt saw 10 films of his releasing and with an exception of Deewane Huye Paagal which still did reasonably OK, remaining bombed at the box office. "Yes, it has been a long wait. For 6 years I have seen my films not performing well at the box office. Now with 1920, I am happy to have come out of the bad phase. Now, I finally have a success. It should only get better from here on", concludes Vikram Bhatt.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 16 Sep 2008 | 12:46 pm Kate Moss' daughter loves petrol fumes

The President is Coming stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Shernaz Patel, Ira Dubey, Anand Tiwari and Shivani Tanksale in prominent roles and is directed by Kunal Roy Kapoor. Bollywood Hungama got in touch with Rohan Sippy to get some more details on this project. "The President Is Coming is a comedy based on a play of the same name. It's about the incidents which took place around the time when George Bush visited India and wanted to shake hands with a young Indian. The film looks at the how the search and selection of that young Indian took place. The film is directed by Kunal Roy Kapoor, who also directed the play." The 90 minute odd film is mainly in English, so is it targeted at a niche audience? "Yes, the film is meant for audiences who will enjoy this kind of humor. About 80-85 % of the film is in English," says Rohan. So how much of the film is left and when do the makers plan to release it? "The film is complete. It is right now in the final stages of post-production. As for the release, I would like to release it right around the time the American elections take place which is in November this year. We are just trying to figuring out if we get a good date amidst all the big releases." And finally when do we get to see this talented filmmaker don the director's hat again. "Well, I hope it will be very soon (laughs). Getting a film started can be a tricky business. I have a script in mind and am moving towards it. Hopefully, I can start early next year," signs off Rohan.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 Sep 2008 | 2:52 pm Briefs - Monica Bedi keen on joining politicsMUMBAI/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Here is a round-up of Bollywood news from Indian newspapers on Monday, Sept 15. After his last film, Provoked starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jagmohan's upcoming release is another realistic film, Shoot On Sight with Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri. However, before the release of this film, Jag has already started shooting for his next project titled Begunah (working title). Jagmohan Mundhra confirmed the news to Bollywood Hungama. "We have already begun shooting for Begunah and have completed around 10 days of shoot. Begunah is a thriller, a typical Abbas-Mustan film. It revolves around an innocent man who is framed for a crime and is thus on a run. And then how he turns tables and avenges his trauma and humiliation," narrates Jagmohan Mundhra. What about the star cast of the film, "Besides Udita Goswami there is Anuj Saxena, Aditya Raj Kapoor, Tareena Patel, Rajesh Khattar, and Sammir Kochher. Most of them are tele-actors but after Rajeev Khandelwal and Prachi Desai, the divide no longer exists," adds Jagmohan. Besides Begunah, Jagmohan Mundhra is also busy filming Naughty At Forty with Govinda. "I will finish shooting Naughty At Forty by October 24, we are currently waiting for more dates from Govinda, we have already finished the London schedule." Any other films in the pipeline? "I have a film with One More Thought Productions titled Roommate with Gul Panag and Raima Sen. Then after that I have another film with Shemaroo which is a romantic comedy. The film is about four main characters. The script is being finalized and since its big budget film, we are approaching bigger stars. So far, the film is untitled although when I had the script, I called it 'Kambakht Ishq' but now that title belongs to Sajid Nadiadwala." "Shoot On Sight will get an opening by in the second week of October. The promotional activities are on. So yes, I think I am very busy for some time and that's how I'd like to be," signs off Jagmohan Mundhra.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 Sep 2008 | 2:03 pm Dholakia to cast Naseer or Victor Banerjee for a hardliner's role in LamhaaThe casting for Rahul Dholakia's film on Kashmir militancy now gets tricky. The main leads being locked, in the director now moves to the strong supporting roles that are based on real-life politicians from the Valley. And that's where the casting gets tricky. Who will play the crucial role of the Geelani-like hardliner? Rahul Dholakia has zeroed in on two brilliant choices for this dynamic character's role. The two actors short-listed for the role are Naseeruddin Shah and Victor Banerjee. Naseer with his opulent mastery of the Urdu language and the art of oratory would be perfect. However, the actor has done several films on militancy and political extremism including his new release Wednesday. Says Dholakia, "Naseer would be perfect. He has the mesmeric presence required to hold large audiences in a political thrall. But he has played the suave radical earlier in Sarfarosh." The other choice is Victor Banerjee who has shown keen interest in Lamhaa. "Victor was one of the first actors I sent the script. He loved it. My only reservation was that Victor has always played soft gentle characters like the ones in Satyajit Ray's Ghaire Bhaire and David Lean's Passage To India." Santosh Sivan's Kashmiri fable Tahaan has clinched the casting in Victor's favour. "I really liked him in the grandfather's role in Tahaan. He brings a certain warmth to the table. And with his gentle eyes, he can make the hardliner speechifying over 'Azaad Kashmir' look really credible." In fact Santosh Sivan's Kashmiri fable is influencing Dholakia's casting in unexpected ways. Sarika who won the National Award for her performance as the bereaved mother in Dholakia's Parzania, was supposed to play an abandoned wife in Lamhaa. "But she has already played that role in Tahaan. And even in my Parzania, she had similar emotions to project. So I've cast an equally talented and neglected Shernaz Patel in that role." Dholakia found Santosh Sivan's film on Kashmir to be too sweet. "It wasn't the reality in Kashmir that I've visited repeatedly in the course of my research for Lamhaa. But I also know Tahaan was a difficult film to shoot. I liked the performances, especially the child, Purav Bhandare. I'm bracing myself to face severe climactic and security hardships in Kashmir." Dholakia is candid enough to admit Bipasha was the only leading lady who wasn't daunted the militancy situation in Kashmir. "Most actors are scared to shoot in the Valley. Bipasha was willing to take up the challenge. After Parzania which was about the Gujarat situation, I want to ensure that my film on Kashmir gets seen by a large audience which meant I need actors with a commercial clout." Dholakia says he has seen a lot of dark-skinned Kashmiri girls. "Bipasha doesn't play the stereotypical Kashmiri. She's willing to give the role time and attention to make it look authentic. It's a very unconventional and challenging role. She shares very contrasting relationships with Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Kapoor. There's no romantic involvement with either hero." In the meanwhile, Dholakia is writing his script for the third time. "Things are changing so rapidly in the Valley. I'm re-writing most of the screenplay for the third time. In my earlier drafts, I had predicted what's happening now in the Valley. Now in my final draft I've to pre-empt the political situation so my film won't look outdated when we come out."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 Sep 2008 | 1:48 pm Slumdog Millionaire bags the People's Choice Award at Toronto film festivalClick above for more stills Danny Boyle's film Slumdog Millionaire was voted as the Cadillac People's Choice Award by the festival audience at the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival. Teen stars usually face a tough struggle to be taken seriously in Bollywood, but having said that, she has proved in her debut film what versatility is all about. A girl with the most amazing smile, 1920 is definitely not her last laugh. Having already signed three films with the Vikram Bhatt banner she is raring to go. Couple of days before the release of 1920, I caught up with the living barbie doll to find out what is the cutest face in Bollywood up to in a horror film. Presenting you Adah Sharma. What adah do you bring along with you in your debut film 1920? I think different adahein. You shouldn't have just one adah, that'll be so sad. I don't want to be an actress with just one adah. That's not good. I've got variety of adahein and you'll have to watch it in the film. And I don't have a pretty smile in the film, let me just warn you since you spoke about my pretty smile (laughs). This is just a put up show for you guys from the media because when you'll see the film you're gonna die. I don't want to be an actress with just one adah. I've got variety of adahein Oh really? Yes, I mean it. Please wear your diapers and go and watch the film (laughs). Is the film that scary? 1920 is not a film with a ghost clad in a white bed sheet walking around. It's not scary like that. It is realistically scary. I mean, you won't be able to see some of the things you're scared of which makes you even more scared. If you can't even see things what you're scared of it's terrifying. I can guarantee you that you'll be petrified. 1920 is not a film with a ghost clad in a white bed sheet walking around We heard that you are a classical dancer and in your first film could not dance. Is that true? Yes, I am a classical dancer and am graduating in kathak. I've graduated in psychology this year in March. Kathak is a seven year course with theory and a practical exam. I'm hoping to complete the theory before December and complete my seven years. Vikram Bhatt told me that it was you who knocked on his door for the lead role in 1920. Why? Because I had read somewhere that they were doing a period film. That's all I read in the papers. Six months before the announcement of this film, I had decided that I wanted to enter films. I had gone to a lot of auditions but I got rejected because I look too young in some places. Some places they didn't like my smile. They thought it was too wide. Somewhere I didn't fit the look and all sorts of things. That was destiny because somewhere 1920 was waiting for me and I didn't know that. I wanted to do a period film in my career so I told my secretary to set up a meeting not knowing what my role in the film would be. You've got a secretary before your debut film. That's impressive! (Laughs) Yes, because he came for my kathak show and was very impressed. Actually he is Juhi Chawla and Vidya Balan's secretary. He doesn't do anything for new comers but after seeing my dance, he was sure that he could get me a dance film. Unfortunately, this film has no dance at all. I did request Vikram to put some twists and turns but in vain. Not a period mujra but something could've worked (laughs). But he said 'no'. The role was so fabulous that nobody has played this role till date in a Hindi film. Are you over confident? No, I'm not over confident. I've watched the film so that boosted my confidence. When you watch a good product it boosts your confidence. I'm a very critical person by nature. But after seeing 1920 there seem to be nothing for what I could've turned critical. That's being positive too! Allerton castle was a very creepy place where we shot the film Will this film be a 'one trip pony' for you? No. I've always wanted to become an actress and already I've signed a three film deal with Vikram Bhatt. I'm doing their next film called Phir. But it's inauspicious to speak about the film till you start filming. So I can't speak much on my next venture. And I'm in talks with lots more interesting producer and directors. U.K is well known for their haunted castles. Did the castle where you shot the film haunt you? Allerton castle was a very creepy place where we shot the film. There was this basement where lights used to go on and off by itself, the bathroom doors used to lock themselves up and the bathroom was three floors down so if anybody went there and got locked, it would've been very difficult to contact as the cell phone had no network there. I'm really intuitive about people and places and this place gave me a very mysterious vibe. You don't have to show a kiss onscreen to actually show how much the other person loves you Are there any intimate scenes with Rajneesh in 1920? I think all the intimacy is in the minds of the characters in this film. You can be very intimate by standing in the two corners of the room. 1920 is a very romantic film too but its scary coming too. Bad and scary things happen to good people who are in love too. You don't have to be bad for bad things to happen to you. The physical and the most extreme intimacy we have in the film is holding hands and hugging. You don't have to show a kiss onscreen to actually show how much the other person loves you. What have you learnt from the debutant Rajneesh? I think from life you learn from every single person you interact with. When you are speaking right now I am learning from you. You speak to a lot of people daily and you learn from them. You learn a lot from somebody who's done 100 films and at the same time you learn a lot from somebody who is a debutant. Rajneesh is a very honest, truthful person and that's what his role in the film is too. I did learn a lot from him. How was Yorkshire? We went in the winters and it was minus two degrees. I haven't experienced such cold ever. So I didn't know what kind of cold weather in Yorkshire was like. Yorkshire is gorgeous but it's freezing cold. The same cast and crew except Anjori are going to the U.K to shoot our next film Phir. So that'll be exciting. Tell us a bit about the music of the film. Adnan Sami has given one of his best works till date. The piano composition in the film is just brilliant. Then there is Pandit Jasraj who has sung for the first time in a Hindi film. Shubha Mudgal has done a Rakhi Sawant song. So there are songs playing in the background too and so much happening in the song that you can't get up and go to the loo in the middle of a song. There is so much happening in the song that you can't get up and go to the loo in the middle of a song Now that Phoonk is a big success, do you think that 1920 has come at the right time? I actually think that Phoonk and 1920 are two different genres because I saw Phoonk. We all went together to see the film. I didn't get scare while watching Phoonk. I thought that the crow was really cute and I fell in love with it. It's nice to know that RGV is an animal lover and so am I. The child in the film is also very adorable. But 1920 can't be compared to Phoonk. You need to see it to believe it. What happens if you don't watch 1920? Well, when you're driving your car alone in the middle of the night and when you look in your rear view mirror, you'll have some unwanted company who will probably stay around and not be very friendly till you go watch 1920.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 15 Sep 2008 | 12:22 pm Neil Nitin Mukesh injures foot in PhiladelphiaNeil Nitin Mukesh is nursing an injured foot after trying some heroics while practising for Kabeer Khan's thriller, tentatively titled 'New York'.
