Sarah Palin Gives Democrats Her Much-Awaited First Stumble

On Nightline last night, ABC aired an extended portion of Charles Gibson's interview with Sarah Palin. In one segment (video below the jump), Gibson asks the Republican vice-presidential nominee whether she agrees with the Bush Doctrine. Palin, who seems unfamiliar with the phrase, sighs and purses her lips almost sadly for Gibson. Here's the exchange:

GIBSON: "Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?"
PALIN: "In what respect, Charlie?
GIBSON: "What do you attribute it to be?"
PALIN: "His world view?"
GIBSON: "No, the Bush Doctrine, enunciated in September 2002, before the Iraq war."
PALIN: "I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism…"

Palin went on to mention mistakes Bush had made in the execution of the Iraq war, and to talk about change in Washington, getting back on more familiar territory. When Gibson explained that the Bush Doctrine was a policy of military preemption, Palin expressed support for it.

Democrats will likely try to spin her lack of knowledge about the Bush Doctrine as a sign of her lack of foreign policy experience and unpreparedness to make important military decisions.

The Washington Post printed another perceived gaffe on the front page. Reporter Anne Kornblut quoted Palin from a speech she gave to her son's Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers, in which she seemed to link the Iraqi government to Al Qaeda's attacks on September 11. She labeled the troops' mission as one of "[defending] the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans." "America can never go back to that false sense of security that came before September 11, 2001," she added. Even President Bush by now has publicly dropped the theory that Iraq had anything to do with the World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

Some argue that this is an unfair interpretation of Palin's quotes, but expect the Obama campaign to seize on this alleged blunder as well. Now the challenge for them in the coming days, as Palin has more off-the-cuff speaking opportunities, will be to take advantage of other perceived slip-ups while at the same time not seeming to run against her, instead of McCain.

Ray Winstone and Robert De Niro: Practically the Same Guy

Photo: Getty Images

Winstone in Darkness: Ray Winstone will replace Robert De Niro in Martin Campbell's Edge of Darkness, lending his somewhat dubious star power alongside co-star Mel Gibson. In another possibly related switcheroo, $4 million will replace $21 million in "Edge of Darkness's opening weekend." [Variety]

Goats: George Clooney and Mandate Pictures have assembled their cast for The Men Who Stare at Goats, the movie based on a book by Jon Ronson about a desperate reporter in Iraq who stumbles on a "supposedly real secret army unit tasked with creating soldiers with paranormal powers." Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, and Jeff Bridges are in negotiations to star with Clooney, whose paranormal power is expected to involve "being incredibly goddamn sexy." [HR]

Five Join the Faire: Christina Ricci, Bill Engvall, The House Bunny's Owen Benjamin, My Name Is Earl's Nadine Valazquez, and Cedric the Entertainer have joined the romantic comedy All's Faire in Love, the story of a Renaissance Faire troupe and the young bard (Benjamin) who falls in love with a lovely lady (Ricci) and must battle swashbuckling RenFaire nerds for her love. We're pretty sure "battling swashbuckling RenFaire nerds" is what Meatloaf meant by, "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." [HR]

Universal Gives Chase: Universal has picked up Lauren Weisberger's Chasing Harry Winston, the third novel from the bazillion-selling author of The Devil Wears Prada. Hitch's Andy Tennant will direct the romantic comedy, which will expand on one of the book's three characters — either the daughter of a supermodel, a rising star in the publishing world, or a newly single female — and focus on how her life changes over the course of a year. We might skip this one unless she "changes" into a robot that fights werewolves with space lasers. [HR]

Doomsday Everyday: Fox plonked down at least a million non-monopoly dollars on Doomsday Protocol, an original spec by Ghost Rider's Shane Salerno. Story is tippy-top secret, but it's an epic sci-fi adventure "in the vein of The Seven Samurai involving a group of aliens and humans with various abilities who are brought together to save Earth," the only way we know how, by downloading Jeff Goldblum's computer virus to the mother ship from their Mac laptop. [HR]

John Varvatos Considers Switching to Milan Shows

Realizing there was no Varvatos show this year — just a party — we asked the designer what was up: "[September] is so late for menswear. The [men's] Milan shows are at the end of June, then you’ve got Paris right after that and … September is women’s. It’s not really men’s. And this year we just decided that it’s so late — it just didn’t make a lot of sense [to show]. We’re really seriously considering taking our shows to Milan because New York Fashion Week is not in step, time-wise, with men’s markets at all."

Fugs Never to Forgive Diane Kruger for Not Bringing Pacey to Hilfiger

Ladies, can you please coordinate which camera you're looking at? Thanks.
    Photo: Getty Images

When we got to Tommy Hilfiger, we spied girl-about-town/fashion correspondent Leigh Lezark standing outside drinking yet another giant cup of coffee, slumped over and looking like she was just waiting for the warm embrace of sweet death. Welcome to the end of Fashion Week, kid.

However, the celebs inside, who presumably got to cool their heels backstage for a while, looked a bit more fresh-faced. Diane Kruger came out wearing a crazy getup of a polka-dot skirt, a plaid shirt, and over-the-knee leather boots. From the neck up, she looked amazing. Otherwise, she resembled a stewardess for Saucy Librarian Airlines. Our enthusiasm at the Kruger sighting died down considerably when we realized that she did not have boyfriend Josh "Pacey Witter" Jackson in tow. Would it have killed him to make an appearance? We're so very tired. When Diet Coke no longer numbs the pain, a little Pacey would probably go a long way.

Kruger was the meat in a Hilary Swank–John Legend sandwich. Legend looked basically dapper, although the red tie hanging out over his sweater kind of evoked an unrolled tongue. Swank, on the other hand, really needs to rethink her super-short blonde hairdo. Unless she's about to reprise her The Next Karate Kid role in The Next Karate Kid: Just One of the Boys — and we hope she is — it's looking a little severe. Michael Pitt could also use a hair intervention, because his messy, longish hair made him look a bit hangdog. But maybe he was just sad that he missed a possible reunion with his Dawson's Creek co-star (ahem, DIANE; we may never forgive that girl). Pitt's quasi-bob, however, does lessen his resemblance to Leonard DiCaprio, which must have pleased attendee Bar Refaeli, as it made her less likely to make out with him accidentally and thus kick off some kind of international gossip incident.

But let's face it: All these people could take grooming lessons from ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, who was hanging out backstage with his iconic beard. Now that's a sharp-dressed man.

Get the Long, Loose Waves at Anna Sui

Want the gently textured waves seen on the runway at Anna Sui? The look is, as stylist Garin puts it, is "edgy but not edgy," both natural and rock and roll at the same time. The big challenge, however, was that last night's show was at the end of the day, meaning that there was a lot of fried model hair to deal with. But even with healthy locks, the look is easily achieved with the right tools. Watch and learn.

Fug Girls: Tyra Isn’t Adhering to Some Calvin Klein Dress Code

    TYRATYRATYRA and some other chick.
    Photo: Getty Images

Bless Tyra Banks. At Calvin Klein, where it feels like the special guests often defer to white or black attire, Miss Tyra fierced up the joint in a hot-pink dress and red shoes — which had the added benefit of making it impossible to miss her, although just in case, she also accessorized with a slick updo that rested atop her noggin. This is why we love her; Miss T never seems content unless she is visible from space.

In fact, we almost felt bad for her seatmate Serena Williams, who did choose a comparatively low-key white and therefore almost became an afterthought. Still, Serena has more U.S. Open titles than Tyra — SO FAR — which evens the score. Plus, we bet she can do up her cute bob in roughly one-tenth of the time.

During the show, Tyra and Glenda Bailey of Harper's Bazaar traded whispers and seemed to be enjoying each other immensely. We couldn't see what was happening with the other marquee attendees, Eva Mendes and Lauren Hutton, because our view was obstructed by distance, a pillar, and a person in a hat. In fact, the security guards wouldn't let anyone without special permission anywhere near the runway preshow — well, except for the well-dressed gentleman who snapped photos of Mendes and Hutton at will with his own tiny camera. But we're just SURE that, eventually, the guards were every bit as rude to him as they were to us.

Ergo, all we got of them was a passing glimpse, enough to notice Eva wore white and Lauren picked black. As for the rest, we'll have to make it up: The Vogue-ettes lined up in a cover two, and then Mendes beat them by throwing a fade to Hutton in the photo pit, at which time she spiked the ball in Anna Wintour's face. Then they all did the chicken dance.

The pack of photographers waiting outside at the end was energetic and vocal. Tatum O'Neal politely thanked everyone as she sped through them. Tyra also bolted quickly, but with loving catcalls: "We love you, Tyra! New York loves you!" they screamed, getting some nearby construction workers and even a UPS dude into the act too. Rachel Zoe fared the opposite. When she emerged, one guy yelled, "EAT A SANDWICH!" as she strolled past impassively. Five minutes later, his paparazzo friend ran up and chortled, "I told her she's horrible! That she's a terrible role model for women! Ha-ha!" When someone asked how Zoe had responded, he said amid self-satisfied laughter, "She threatened to call the cops and then took off running!" Aw. Whatever our personal opinions of Zoe, this guy made us feel the impossible for her: pity. But if you're reading this, Rachel, take heart. Shortly thereafter the same guy quite seriously insisted to all that Clay Aiken is a bona fide legend. So clearly, his judgment of people is less than sound. Although you still might want to investigate the sandwich part.

Cynthia Rowley’s Swag for the Skinny-Assed

We hope yours is not this large.
    Photo: Melissa Hom

Of all the swag we've seen carried out of fashion shows this week, Cynthia Rowley's portable butt pad was certainly the strangest — and most practical. Guests in the first and second rows got to use their pads, then peel them off their seats and cart them off, using the foam handle affixed by a chic faux-gold chain. Interior designer Celerie Kemble, who is married to financier–social fixture Boykin Currie, pointed out the pad's oh-so-sweet smell of polyurethane and encouraged us to steal one that had gone unclaimed. "You never know when it might come in handy," she said. "I like to think of myself as having a bony ass."

Palin Plays the Church Lady With Charlie Gibson

"I can also make the seasons change, you know."
    Photo: ABC News

Clips from tonight's ABC News interview with Sarah Palin are already online, and it looks like she survives the first round pretty well unscathed. In the transcript released by the network, Charles Gibson begins the interview by asking whether she could "look this country in the eye" and say she's experienced enough to one day be president of the United States. Palin didn't hesitate before saying, "I do, Charlie." She said she also had her answer ready, without hesitation, when John McCain asked her to be his running mate. She never questioned whether she was ready. "Doesn't that take a little hubris?" Gibson asked. "You can't blink," she replied.

In the rest of the interview, Gibson questioned her regarding her statements (delivered in her church) that U.S. soldiers were "on a task from God." Palin insisted she was paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln, but stepped back from the sentiment when it regarded her son, Track, who decamped for Iraq today. "I don't know if it is a task from God, Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision." She nearly sounded as if she were lecturing Gibson in Sunday School, and kept using his name as though he was a small child. (Gibson appeared unimpressed by this tactic.)

When the World News Tonight anchor began to gently press her on her foreign policy, Palin had ready answers about Georgia and the Ukraine's entries into NATO, but stopped short of saying the U.S. should go to war with Russia if, after Georgia's inclusion in the treaty, Russia once again invaded. "We have got to show support, in this case, for Georgia," she said. "The support that we can show is economic sanctions against Russia if this is what it leads to." She also said — three separate times — that we must avoid a new Cold War.

On the whole, Palin seemed a bit unsettled by the intimacy of the interview (she has spent the last week in front of screaming crowds, after all), but she handled herself well. If the rest of the interviews are this short, we're betting she will continue to come off polished and prepared. The next thing her critics will ask for, of course, is a more unscripted, hour-long appearance on a show like Meet the Press. Don't expect it anytime soon, however. We'll have to survive on these Palin bits and pieces for the foreseeable future.

    MTA Adopts ‘City’ Shorthand

    Photo: Bed-Stuy Banana

As noted in the brilliant comments on our latest Gossip Girl episode recap, people from Manhattan all-too-frequently refer to the island as "the city." In the loose definition of "the city," they often will not mean the Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn, or Queens, even though all four are also, of course, part of New York. So, for example, you could be at Bohemian Hall in Astoria and ask a friend "what time are you heading back to the city?" and it would make sense, even though you are already technically there.

Forgive us for explaining this, as we know all of you already know this, but we have recently discovered that people living outside of New York City sometimes read this blog (and we don't mean our parents — thank God they don't), so they may need some extra explanation. Anyway, generally the city government's official stance is that all five boroughs constitute "the city," and use signage on roads and in the subway correspondingly. However, wily blogger Bed-Stuy Banana spotted this little MTA sign at the Nostrand A/C stop in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

It's an inoffensive little shorthand to be sure. But if the sign on the other side of the subway said "To Country," that would be a whole different kettle of fish.

‘The Wall Street Journal’ Coverage of This Lehman Thing Is Weirding Us Out All of a Sudden

    Photo: Wall Street Journal

Okay, so we're a little slow today (we had deli coffee this morning), but we just realized The Wall Street Journal quoted a guy they eavesdropped on in their story about Lehman Brothers that went up a little while ago. Actually, two: They end with a quote from a guy standing "waiting to order food … at a fast-food vendor across the street" whom they do not identify and whom it's unclear knows he's being quoted at all: "At some point, where does it stop?" he says. Wait a second. How does the Journal know dude wasn't talking about all of the internecine sex stuff on Gossip Girl the other night? And furthermore, what's up with this weird aerial shot of the staff of Lehman in a meeting today? Did they hire a helicopter or just a guy with a long-range lens? Where did they hear the Bank of America thing, anyway? Someone's hairdresser? Are these the kinds of tabloid tactics we should expect from Rupert Murdoch's Journal now? And if so, what's next? Crotch shots of Dick Fuld getting out of his limo? Not that we wouldn't be down with that, but still: Is this an appropriate way to report a story in which rumors and panic have been a major problem?* Jeez Louise, guys. Someone needs to be responsible here. It can't all fall on poor Sorkin.

*And yes, we know we quoted them here and in a headline, but like we said — deli coffee.

David Frum and Kurt Andersen on McCain’s Latent Leftiness and Whether Democrats or Republicans Are More Disingenuous

    Photo: Getty Images

Every day until November 4, a series of writers and thinkers will discuss the election over instant messenger for nymag.com. Today, David Frum, who writes daily for National Review Online, and New York columnist Kurt Andersen discuss Obama's faux-outrage, conservative "anti-information," and surprises a President McCain might have in store.

K.A.: I'm curious if the decision by McCain to abandon straight talk in favor of full-bore disingenuousness — about "lipstick on a pig" and more generally on celebrity and inexperience — makes you uncomfortable?

D.F.: Let me start with "lipstick on a pig," and repost here something I wrote earlier today:

The English courts of equity used to say: Those seeking equity must come with clean hands. That is the Obama campaign's problem with the lipstick story. After hyping allegations that the Clintons used racially charged language against him, Barack Obama is poorly placed to complain when the McCain camp plays the same trick with gender.

Mobilization through the inflammation of imaginary grievances is an ugly trait of modern American politics. It will only stop when it stops all around. So long as media ground rules make such mobilization profitable for Democrats, it is inevitable that Republicans will follow suit.

D.F.: More generally: One of the reasons that so many Republicans (not me) have been so delighted by the Palin pick is precisely that it represents an attempt to beat the Democrats at their own game. I can understand why Democrats are reacting now so negatively — one's own game never looks so nice when one sees somebody else playing it!

K.A.: Their own game in choosing Obama? Sure. But turning lipstick on a pig into a grievance is 100 percent phony. Whereas at least Obamaites taking umbrage at the Clintonites' racialism was 50 percent correct. Don't you think?

D.F.: I don't know how you calculate these percentages, but if you concede a high phoniness quotient to the Obama campaign's outraged reaction to the Clinton campaign, then you see my point.

But it's not just Obama-Clinton. This has been the normal stuff of American politics for a long time. Remember Chuck Schumer's faux-outrage over Alfonse D'Amato calling him a putzhead? Did Schumer even for a second think that D'Amato was revealing anti-Semitism rather than a deep New Yorker's familiarity with the rich argot of Yiddish abuse?

K.A.: Yeah (and I don't want to obsess over lipstick on a pig), but it's rare that there is no real basis for the phony outrage. Concoction versus exaggeration. And McCain's straight-shooting history raises the bar, one would think. And you're not going to get me to defend Chuck Schumer. ;)

D.F.: As to the larger question of "straight talk," let me refer you to a brilliant point made by my National Review Online colleague Jim Manzi. He cited the two passages on energy in the McCain and Obama acceptance speeches and noted (1) that it required a highly trained eye to be able to tell who delivered which; and more seriously, (2) that nobody familiar with energy issues could take either passage even slightly seriously. The absence of "straight talk" in politics is more a matter of these trivial little flaps.

K.A.: Which is why the third or half of Americans who hate electoral politics hate electoral politics. The tactical brilliance of Palin's selection aside, are you feeling more or less squeamish about the prospect of Palin one heartbeat away?

D.F.: I have been disturbed about the choice from the start, as you know. And I have not seen any reason to feel less disturbed. Part of this is the grim facts of mortality: I'd worry less if John McCain were 52 rather than 72.

K.A.: You mean, the one-in-six chance that any given 72-year-old will die during the next four years?

D.F.: One in seven, I think — but yes. She really could be president! And here's where my fellow conservatives really worry me.

K.A.: Recklessness because the prospect of winning is so euphoric and irresistible?

D.F.: They are so attracted by the symbolism of the selection that they show no concern — never mind for her executive competence — even for her views. There's a photograph circulating on conservative blogs that shows Palin lounging on a motorcycle, paired with another of Obama in a helmet on a bicycle. It's headed: "All you need to know." Personally I need to know a little more. That's not even insufficient information. It's anti-information — a denial that information matters.

You can enjoy a motorcycle and be pro-choice. Or antiwar. Or in favor of immigration amnesty. Or for that matter, in favor state control of the means of production!

K.A.: Exactly. And there are those people on the left, too, of course, but the "respectable right" seems to indulge in that somewhat more than the "respectable left."

D.F.: Well, I can't evaluate who does it more. But it's not my problem when it happens on the other side of the line! On our side, though, conservatives have been in agreement for some time that competence would be a real and legitimate issue in 2008. It's why so many of us in the conservative mainstream ended up with either Romney or Giuliani, each of whom could demonstrate a lengthy record of successful management.

K.A.: And yet you are a pretty lonely voice out there right now, as your fellow conservatives say it doesn't matter with Palin. Also: I sincerely think it's the problem of all intellectually honest people when the non-reality-based crazies on both sides are ascendant.

D.F.: It's not craziness that is the problem. Rather the opposite. We're all such political sophisticates these days. Have a beer in any airport bar and strike up a conversation with the guy on the next stool about politics. He sounds like a guest on Hardball! "Well, I think McCain has to drive up Obama's negatives." There are no civilians left.

I was watching Alex Castellanos on CNN the other day. Good man, I like him. He was defending the lipstick-on-a-pig bit. He said: This puts Obama on the defensive. How many hundreds of thousands of people nod sagely at that?

K.A.: I know what you mean, but it's the remaining civilians who are the swingable voters.

D.F.: Not so sure about that.

D.F.: The swingable voters are the least committed to politics, often the least informed. I don't think you get very far with swingable voters by pointing to the flaws in the presidential decision-making system of the past eight years, and by urging improvement in the bureaucratic process!

K.A.: If I were a Republican, I think I might want Obama to win — or, anyhow, for McCain to lose … because four more years of a Republican White House (even if Palin doesn't become president) are likely to be long-term bad for the GOP.

    D.F.: Why bad?

K.A.: I would be worried that Iraq is probably not going to end in "victory" under a McCain presidency. That the economy will be rotten. That in general, the next four years are going to be unhappy, and that, after eight years, a despised Republican administration is going to make people think: "Jeez, enough with the GOP."

D.F.: I think life is too unpredictable for statements like that. Who knows? And leaders have a lot of leeway once they do win. My guess is that a President McCain would swing sharply to the left.

K.A.: Mine too, which is how I console myself during weeks like the last one.

D.F.: I can see the conversation now: Senator Reid arrives at the Oval Office. "Well, John, congratulations. This is a magnificent personal victory for you. Of course our party scored some victories too … in the Senate and the House … obviously the people want us to work together."

    K.A.: And President McCain replies…?

D.F.: Then comes immigration amnesty, climate change, a partial reenactment of the expiring Bush tax cuts with a tax increase for the top-income tax brackets.

The deal is that McCain governs like a French Fifth Republic president…

    K.A.: LOL

D.F.: He kicks away his party and concerns himself with foreign policy. He hates the GOP at least as much as you do, you know.

    K.A.: I like the (2000) McCain-Danforth-etc. GOP.

Does he also appoint Souter II to the Supreme Court?

    D.F.: Dunno.

Best play for him — send up a staunch conservative to the Senate, watch him or her be Cuisinarted by the hypercharged Democratic majority, then sorrowfully tell the base that you did your best.

K.A.: You're making me get downright sanguine about a McCain presidency. As long as he reverts to his anti-Establishment secular Beltway self.

D.F.: It's NOT anti-Establishment! He IS the establishment! That's why the press used to love him so. That's why the press hates him now.

K.A.: That's why I included "Beltway" among my modifiers.

D.F.: But that's why the press will forgive him when he reverts to type.

    K.A.: And you too?

    D.F.: Forgive him?

K.A.: Prefer the circa-2000 McCain to the 2008 one?

D.F.: I was for McCain in 2000 up to South Carolina. He lost his cool there. Presidents cannot do that. Of course he was provoked. That happens to presidents too.

I credit the 2008 McCain for the surge. I strenuously oppose him on immigration. But I wonder whether the common theme is one of temperament. I have to say, much as I think Barack Obama is disastrously wrong on just about everything he believes — especially his economics, which seem flat-out Mondale reactionary — I do admire his cool and calm. And his willingness to listen to a broad range of views from within his coalition.

K.A.: His cool and calm — meaning you'd worry less about the 3 a.m. call with BHO in the Oval Office than JSM?

D.F.: The 3 a.m. call with Obama is a problem, because then he's cast upon his (bad) instincts — as happened with his weak initial response to Georgia.

But he might do better at 3 p.m.! He wouldn't get bored during the Cabinet meeting. Or rather, he'd listen even though he was bored.

    K.A.: And he wouldn't scream.

    D.F.: Right.

    Confirmed: Mickey Rourke Still Crazy

    Photo: Getty Images

God bless you, Mickey Rourke. With all the positive pre-release buzz around The Wrestler, we were bracing ourselves for a bunch of boring profiles on just how healthy and adjusted Rourke is these days — but thankfully, if this piece in today's L.A. Times is any indication, our fears were completely unfounded!

It's not so much what he says as it is how he says it: the casual asides about "a restaurant in the West Village that my friend Julian Schnabel turned me on to," or the way his personal trainer would rouse him from sleep in his hotel room "even if I had three girls in my bed." Okay, maybe it is what he says.

Rourke apparently has six Chihuahuas, one of them nicknamed Jaws (a.k.a. Little Mickey), who he rescued from certain death at an animal shelter. "It had been badly abused and was totally uncontrollable, always foaming at the mouth and growling at anyone that tried to come near him. So, of course, Rourke tried to give him a kiss and Jaws bit his mouth. 'There was blood everywhere. It looked like I'd been hit by a car. I had to go get stitches. But I kept him.'"

    Lehman: ‘It’s Over, Man’

Yesterday, under pressure from its dropping stock price, Lehman Brothers announced its intention to sell its prized investment-management division and spin off a commercial real-estate division into a new public company. "We've been through adversity before, but we always come out stronger," CEO Richard Fuld said in a statement. But now the stock has tumbled even further, and the New York Times is reporting that Fuld is actively seeking to sell the entire company. The Wall Street Journal adds that potential suitors include Bank of America, and some speculate that the Fed is "actively" helping them seek a buyer. But the outlook is pretty grim. Lurking around Lehman headquarters this afternoon, the Journal overheard an employee saying on his cell phone, "It's over, man … unless we get bought out in the next 24 hours, it's over."

Lorne Michaels Discusses Tina Fey’s Palin Possibilities

    Photo: Getty Images

Even since John McCain announced his vice-presidential pick, there's been buzz about how much the bookish barracuda resembles one Miss Liz Lemon. Today FishbowlNY reports: "A reporter asked Lorne Michaels about the possibility of Tina Fey returning to play vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. 'This Saturday or ever?' Michaels asked before saying, 'We had something on Sarah Palin yesterday at read-through but with the Charlie Gibson interview tonight, things will change again.'" He added: "There are discussions. They are ongoing." Yeah, yeah, we get it, no promises. Kristen Wiig, however, we're still holding you to yours. [FishbowlNY/Mediabistro]

"Heh. Guess whose tie knot is wider?"
    Photo: Getty Images

As promised, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton met today in the former president's Harlem offices. Here's a posed pic of the two of them together. What does this body language — half smiles, hands in pockets, lack of eye contact, open space between them — tell you?

    (A) They are both completely comfortable together.
    (B) They have no idea what to do with each other.
    (C) They can't wait for this to be over.
    (D) Bubba just tooted.

    Video: Kanye Smash!

    Photo: Courtesy of TMZ

TMZ promised video footage of Kanye's arrest at LAX earlier today, and now here it is. While a photographer yelps for the police, Kanye and his tour manager, Don. C, strip the cameras out of dudes' hands, spike them to the floor, and calmly walk away. Watch till the end, when an old security guard wistfully asks a pap, "Kanye West attacked you?"

Earlier: Kanye Arrested! So Who's Updating His Blog?

I’ve been a member of the Painting Group for about 30 years, starting somewhere around 1975. The Painting Group was started by David Levine, a great caricaturist whose work you can see in the New York Review of Books, and Aaron Shikler, a portraitist. I was thinking of doing a film to honor David and Aaron, but I couldn’t figure out what the premise would be until I read something about the fact that George Washington was painted by over 25 different artists and we’ve come to accept [dollar bill–featured artist] Gilbert Stuart’s as the definitive Washington. Doesn’t mean it’s necessarily that’s the way that Washington looked — Washington was painted by many different artists, and there’s a variety of different looks. So I thought, what if our group, which consists of 25 artists, could paint a great, prominent American figure? That would make a film.

And you recruited Neil Leifer to direct. This isn’t the kind of project one would normally associate with a sports-photography superstar…
Neil’s a great photographer and he’s also done some films, and he and I have always talked about doing a project together. So I approached him and told him what I had in mind and he liked it. So I said, 'You direct it, we’ll produce it together.' Neil is very organized, and has a great knowledge of good filmmakers; making this film didn’t really require any extra expertise. We didn’t have to know a great deal about art. We just had to be curious.

I read that your nickname for him is “The Pest.”
Neil is a very… persistent person. Which, by the way, he probably did hone as someone who not only took great photographs in sports, and as the sports world grew, you really had to fight your way into areas and you had to be rather dogged. And one of the great things about Neil is that he keeps at it, he never gives up. So in this case "pest" was meant as a compliment.

There’s a funny scene in the film when you guys try to pay Justice O’Connor the standard model fee...
Yes, absolutely! And she could not accept any payment. I mean, we offered her very little. It was probably under 40 bucks.

    A token, then.
Right. I think we pay models something like fifteen bucks an hour. But I never saw the check because he ripped it up! It was big surprise. We didn’t know he was doing it. We were lucky to get it on camera because nobody was paying attention at first, and she was so playful when she was fooling around with Aaron about being paid.

She really has a great personality — I have to admit I was a bit surprised.
We had no idea either. None of us had ever met her aside from David Kennerly. And as you can see, she was very charming. She was funny. She would eat anything; she had no special diet. Her secretary called me and said, "Are you kidding, she’s a cowgirl from Arizona, she’ll eat anything! Just make sure she gets water." She was so charming that she totally made the film. You never know in a documentary if the star will be a "B" or "C"… whether it would be the paintings, or one of the painters, or David or Aaron…but she was wonderful. We knew that she would be important, of course, but we didn’t know if she would elevate the film.

They proceed to ravage the foam core, tearing it apart, stuffing it anywhere they can to keep pieces for themselves, biting and shrieking at each other like a pack of wild coyote. It’s the next best thing to watching All My Children in the afternoon.

So, How Is Elvis Costello’s Variety Show?

    Photo: Getty Images

A few years back, John Lydon blew what remained of his Sex Pistols reputation by appearing on the Anglo version of Big Brother. Then again, the former Johnny Rotten’s favorite line was "Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?" Elvis Costello has no excuse, which made Tuesday night’s taping at the Apollo of Spectacle, his new Sundance Channel variety show all the more baffling. The evening was much like the Seinfeld episode where Kramer installs the old Merv Griffin set in his apartment, but without the laughs. The festivities began with a stage manager asking the audience to provide some canned "applause" and then "medium applause." Costello then emerged all in black with a flowing scarf in a getup that was Quentin Crisp meets Little Dorrit era Dickens. Costello’s guests included Zooey Deschanel, M. Ward, Jenny Lewis, and Jakob Dylan. Individually, they all have their charms, but seated together on the stage of the Apollo, just a few feet from where James Brown lay in repose, they jointly made up a musical version of The Whitest Kids U' Know.

There was something infinitely sad and dispiriting as Elvis read strangely Dadaist questions off a TelePrompTer. Card 21 just said "Bach. Brian Wilson." It was followed by "The inhibition of indie rock vs. pop music." Poor Elvis was out of his element, asking M. Ward how he related to Deschanel and Lewis since they're both from L.A. and Ward isn't. "Matt’s from Ventura County," corrected Lewis. Costello sighed and said, "Someone is going to have to shoot the researcher."

You had to wonder who talked him into this. Toward the end of the taping, show handlers were forced to move up audience members to replace the faithful that fled halfway through the evening. Lewis and Deschanel eventually returned to sing backing vocals on a couple of Costello standards. "The only way this night can be saved is if they start making out," said a disappointed fan. Alas, it never happened. Costello brought Dylan back out, and the evening finally went off the cue cards. Jakob told a story about Joe Strummer giving him his vest after a show on the Combat Rock tour and his mom unwittingly donating it to the Salvation Army. Elvis mentioned the first time he met Dylan’s daddy. Bob uttered, "I've been hearing a lot about you." A starstruck Costello shot back, "I've heard a lot about you."

The all-star combo then did a sublime cover of Strummer’s "Straight to Hell" and finished with an obligatory cover of "Peace Love, and Understanding," that Costello introduced by confessing that Nick Lowe originally wrote the song as a parody of protest music, but times had changed, not for the better. Now, Costello said, it was time to take the words seriously. It was all wonderfully slapdash and real. Costello was left with a lesson he surely learned long ago: You can’t script rock and roll.
