The Fug Girls Know Why Mary-Kate Olsen is Smiling

We're accustomed to seeing the Olsens skulking around town with their arms over their wee faces and a battalion of bodyguards preventing any errant air from being breathed in their direction. So it was a shock Saturday night at Rock & Republic to see one of the twins actually allowing herself to spend a full fifteen minutes in view of the masses — and looking happy, to boot. The Olsen in question laughed and smiled at the people around her, boasted shockingly bouncy hair, and did not appear to have arisen recently from the depths of a Starbucks dumpster. "That has to be Ashley," the girls behind us decided. "She looks so clean." Well, hang onto your shower gel, ladies, because the well-groomed and jolly Olsen in attendance was in fact Mary-Kate. And if her mood is any indication, girlfriend has been getting laid. Or at least that's our pet theory.

M-K wasn't the only celeb to spur some mistaken-identity hijinks. In addition to our third sighting of Jessica Szohr — with whom Mary-Kate had a grand old time — Gossip Girl finally coughed up a few more of its own, in the forms of Matthew Settle, glorified extra Nicole Fiscella, and tousled dreamboat Chace Crawford, whose arrival prompted a girl in our row to squeal, "OH MY GOD! He was SO GOOD in High School Musical!" Sure, it's easy to confuse two blue-eyed, delicately coifed teen-mag demigods, but there is one key difference…actually, never mind. We can't think of one.

Crawford mostly observed the pre-show quietly through his carefully sultry bangs — until Matthew Settle whipped out his cell phone, scrolled through to something, and passed it down the row. "SHUT. UP," Crawford mouthed animatedly, snapping awake and gawking at whatever precious comedic cargo Settle had found. He handed it off to Szohr, who in turn flashed it at Mary-Kate, which elicited a huge guffaw. Seriously, what was this mysterious joke? A photo? A video? An unsolicited text message from Joan Collins? Share it with the rest of the class, guys, because we're dying to know — and whatever it was, we are pretty sure Tiny Olsen hasn't enjoyed herself that much since her day job involved being bounced on John Stamos' knee.

Also seated in Celebrity Row (and mostly keeping to himself) were John Legend and his very boobalicious girlfriend, Lipstick Jungle man candy Robert Buckley, and Izabella Miko, who clearly regretted having brought a date when she saw she was seated right next to Buckley. Well, we might be projecting there. But all in all, it was a very satisfying exercise in celebrity ogling. For us, anyway: One of the girls behind us leaned over to her friend and whined, "Why aren't Blair and Serena here?" Honey, we don't know. Perhaps they're home torturing Chuck. Maybe that's what Matthew Settle had on his cell phone.

Fug Girls: Tropical Storm Hanna Has No Respect for Fashion

One thing we love about Ugly Betty's Becki Newton is that she's game for anything when it comes to Fashion Week. Saturday's Vena Cava show was not the first time we've seen her at a presentation, which typically put models on a dais while guests mill around with cocktails — meaning celebrities have to be prepared to stand and mingle with the masses. Yet Newton appeared completely comfortable, cheerfully congratulating the designers and giving a long on-camera interview before polishing off her champagne and dashing out into the rain.

Unfortunately, Newton was one of the only famous faces undeterred by the weather. The only others we saw were socialites Ferebee Bishop and Byrdie Bell — the latter still blonde — and Leigh Lezark, who ogled the pretty, pretty dresses without ever removing her thick-framed white sunglasses. You know the ones: Chloë Sevigny discarded them about three years ago.

By the time the hour-long event ended, the rain pounded down in an all-out deluge. Give them credit for trying: Via Spiga, which collaborated with Vena Cava on the shoes worn in Saturday's presentation, apparently provided a bunch of supersize souvenir umbrellas for the soggy patrons who came to Chelsea. There may not have been enough to go around — which in turn may have caused attendees to gank the umbrellas of innocent, unknowing bloggers still working the room — but the idea certainly won them some points. Too bad Tropical Storm Hanna has no respect for fashion. Or for our shoes.

Fug Girls: Anna Wintour, Jessica Szohr Shelter From Storm at Alexander Wang

As Tropical Storm Hanna's sloppy seconds roared through New York on Saturday afternoon, bedraggled guests poured into Alexander Wang's show and were greeted with two welcome sights: small bottles of white wine and Anna Wintour's shiny, bone-dry bob. Naturally, the Vogue editrix bore no effects of the inclement weather. Either she has the world's best umbrella-wrangler, or even the rain is afraid to bump into her. She also survived wearing a tight ribbed sweater on a humid day with nary a perspiration stain. We wish our sweat glands were so obedient. Maybe she secretly had hers removed in an exotic operation in Guam. You heard it here first.

Daisy Lowe — rocker Gavin Rossdale's surprise daughter — fared less elegantly. Clutching a petite white pooch who looked as drenched as her brunette bangs, Daisy perched in the front row next to boyfriend Mark Ronson, whose severe-storm gear of choice was tight mid-thigh plaid shorts, a T-shirt that read "Bikini Kill," and sneakers. We can't wait until CNN's live-on-the-scene hurricane reporters adopt this approach. Down the way, Erin Wasson merrily chirped to reporters about how pieces from her jewelry line, Low Luv, would appear on Wang's models. And we can't quite believe Jessica Szohr is the first Gossip Girl cast member we've seen at the tents, considering she plays our least favorite character (tied with Jenny Humphrey). In fact, we've spied her twice today: once, studiously avoiding photographers alongside Jessica Stam as they hustled into the tents pre–Charlotte Ronson, and again in Wang's front row watching her model pal strut the catwalk. We hope she had a raincoat, because her paper-thin white V-neck isn't going to stand up to the weather unless she takes shelter near Anna's weather-repellent bob.

Speaking of, we realized it must be hard to be the Duchess of Bobtown, knowing that at any given show you are one of about four people in the room commanding all the curious stares. Still, we admit, we ogled. After a mixture of impassive faces, pursed lips, and the occasional shifting of her dark shades to seatmate Sally Singer, we noticed Anna checking her phone during the models' final parade rather than giving the collection one last look (interpret that as you will; unfortunately, our body-language experts do not speak fluent A-Dubs). Interestingly, she appeared to be scrolling through texts on an outdated (by Vogue standards, we imagine) black Razr. What, no iPhone, A-Dubs? We know the lines were long, but isn't that why God — by way of the Condé Nast HR department — created assistants?

Fug Girls Shamed by Instant Recognition of Alex McCord at Rosa Cha

It felt strange to be watching Rosa Cha’s line of summery bikinis and cover-ups while it absolutely poured rain outside. We imagine this must be what it’s like to be on a strict no-fat diet while attending the Bacon Festival.

Braving the elements was professional lover of girls in bikinis Nigel Barker, thoughtfully seated right next to the lovely Zoe “Center Stage” Saldana, who had to be led to her seat from backstage as though she’d just been struck blind. Hopefully, the power of Nigel’s hotness restored her ability to walk twenty feet on her own.

Walking and talking independently was Lost’s Evangeline Lilly, who was unfortunately wearing the ugliest pants we’ve seen all week. Maybe she’s at Fashion Week to find some new ones? We stared at her for twenty minutes before we realized who she was — probably because we’re used to seeing her scrabbling through the underbrush with Sawyer — but we easily I.D.'d Misses USA (Teen and Original Flavor) thanks to their handy sashes, which we really feel ought to be required for all bold-faced names. We assume they were scouting for future swimsuit competitions, but we have no idea what The Real Housewives of New York’s Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen were doing at the show, other than posing for an endless series of photos. Alex and Simon must be doing something right, though. After all, to our deep, deep shame, we identified them immediately.

BREAKING: Aldo ‘Seen on the Runway!’

If you weren't sweating it out at the tents, it happened to be a fantastic day to go shopping (pre-deluge, anyhow), as the Saturday crowds were about two-thirds what they would normally be. Makes sense: Most shopaholics are clamoring around the runways and all. But what if the runways were to come to, ahem, Aldo? Today we saw the sign pictured above, positioned conveniently near the entrance of the store on Broadway in Soho. It reads: "AS SEEN ON THE RUNWAY AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK." Aldo. Really? And which runway would that be? But surely a retailer would never lie to us for the sake of marketing! Perhaps there are similar signs at Express, too?

Talent...

It was, quite frankly, a tremendous and crazy crush. Tourists, Lohan-lovers, and professionals alike were screaming both of their names as Lindsay giggled while holding up what appeared to be an electric-blue purse — matching her pumps — to block the left side of her Ray Ban–clad face. At one point she and Sam doubled over to laugh and whisper to each other as a teenager in front of us tried taking a photo of herself with them in the background. “This is terrible,” one girl in our general area said, as everyone (yes, us included — we are nothing if not dedicated to our readers, or at least that’s what we told ourselves) snapped pictures of the tumult. “Those poor girls,” another woman said, pushing closer to get a better shot. “What a horrible way to live,” said another, jumping up to make sure she got Lindsay in the frame. “Please,” the girl next to us said. “If no one was paying any attention to her, she’d DIE.” And then, of course, there was the mob of about ten who threw elbows and pushed us around in order to get as many good photos as possible, then all turned to us and each other and said, “So who is that, anyway?”

The whole hullabaloo thoroughly aggravated one of New York’s Finest, who just wanted them to clear the park exit. “Are you waiting for a limo?” he yelled at her bodyguard four times. “No,” the guy finally answered, stone-faced. We suppose technically he wasn’t lying to the police; they were waiting for an Escalade. After Lindsay and Sam were escorted to their car — the paparazzi literally climbing into the backseat with them — we overheard two photogs talking: “Did you get the shot?” the older one asked. “Someone asked me to move!” his protégé responded. “No! Kid!" the older one barked. "You never give up your spot in line! NEVER!” Yet another valuable piece of advice from the trenches. And to think, some people don’t believe this experience is educational.

Abaete’s ‘Underpinnings’ Are Sweet, Not Slutty

When we read in Abaete's program notes that the collection was inspired by "elements of underpinnings: boning, exposed casing, lingerie, girdles and netting," we thought we were in for a slut parade. We couldn't have been more wrong. What followed was a lovely collection of flirty cocktail dresses with mini and full skirts in shades of soft red, bright yellow, and blue. But we were puzzled by the "underpinning shorts" with see-through panels on the side — they resembled transparent biker shorts. How can one walk down the street with the sides of their thighs and hips exposed to the world? But the nude corsets with white boning were hardly stereotypical, and actually looked rather sweet topping a full skirt.
