Robert De Niro Walks Off the ‘Edge’

De Niro Tumbles Over Edge: After less than a week on set, Robert De Niro has peaced out from Martin Campbell's Edge of Darkness, a drama starring Mel Gibson about an operative sent to clean up murder evidence. "Sometimes things don't work out; it's called creative differences," explained a spokesman for De Niro, shrugging it off with his best De Niro impression. [Variety]

Denzel Books Gig: Denzel Washington will topline Book of Eli, a "post-apocalyptic drama" to be directed by From Hell's Allen and Albert Hughes. Story follows a lone hero in a not-too-distant future who must fight his way across America because he alone knows the only thing that can save society. (Spoiler alert: it's Obama.) [Variety]

Hiring Spree: Martin Landau, Steve Zahn, and Steve Buscemi have joined Ron Livingston in Raul Sanchez Inglis's The Company Men, the story of a collapsing toy company. They might be redesigning their toys as weapons of war to win a huge defense contract and keep their company afloat, but not if Robin Williams has anything to say about it! [HR]

Breaking Forecast: Snow: Prom Night's not unattractive actress Brittany Snow is in negotiations to star in Breaking the Girl for Myriad Pictures, directed by But I'm a Cheerleader's Jamie Babbit. When a betrayed co-ed befriends a fellow student with a nemesis of her own, they plot to kill each other's enemies, Strangers on a Train style. We've been waiting to see Snow do some murderin' since she let us down in the falsely advertised, bloodbathless John Tucker Must Die. [HR]

Strong a Homie: Guy Ritchie told our BFFs at ComingSoon that he's cast Body of Lies' Mark Strong in his Sherlock Holmes movie. Not opposite Robert Downey Jr., however, as Ritchie and producer Joel Silver are still on the "Watson Hunt." We imagine Russell Crowe must be throwing away all those Guy-Russell friendship bracelets he made last week at summer camp. [ComingSoon]

Pellington Finds Solace: The Mothman Prophecies' Mark Pellington will direct New Line's mystery thriller Solace, the story of a doctor with psychic powers who helps the police track down a serial killer. While debate over psychic powers rages in the scientific community, physicists agree that "New Line must have discovered a wormhole to the year 1991 that allows them to release this movie back when people saw dumb shit like this." [Variety]

Italian Designer Mila Schon Dies

Italian designer Mila Schon died today at the age of 92, just days before Milan planned to honor her 50th year in the fashion industry. The Croatian-born designer founded her fashion house in Milan in 1958 and began dressing high-society opera-going ladies. Though she adored Parisian couture, she shied away from opulent styles popular in Rome and Paris, creating pieces known for their geometric shapes and double-faced fabrics. "I created clothes like I wanted them — without lining, with the inside just like the outside; double-faced fabric gave me the idea of order and cleanliness," Schon once said, according to Reuters. She eventually expanded to the U.S. and Far East. Her business is now run by the Brand Extension group.

Kelly Cutrone Reveals Where to Find Hot, Straight Australian Men This Fashion Week

People's Revolution owner and Hills star Kelly Cutrone knows how to keep her employees happy. Aside from a sizable salary (she says they often make over $85K), she makes sure her staffers aside from Whitney Port are taken care of when it comes to gentlemen. "I set up my girls all the time," she said at last night's Keith Lissner showcase when we asked how scripted Whitney's setup with the male model was. "I would never be on a TV show that was scripted like that," she said. "I'm so bad at relationships personally, so it gives me great pleasure to see some other woman who's a little younger than me and not so far ahead in their career to possibly have a shot at love." As for how well those setups have worked out, Cutrone laughed. "I mean, they hook it up. They're power girls … It's usually short-lived but fruitful."

Cutrone should have plenty more opportunities to find beaus for her staffers during Fashion Week, especially at her favorite party, the Supre Outback BBQ. "It's run by guys who are straight, so they're already part of the game in the design world. They're from Australia, they like to surf, they've had incredible relationships with really hot sexy rock-star models, so who wouldn't want a guy like that with a multi-million-dollar company? And they'll be cooking outback-style all day. It goes for seven hours, so by 7 or 8 p.m. — because it starts at 4 p.m. — it's going to be a good, dirty party." We want to go!

Dan Akroyd Implies That ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Could Star McLovin

Rumors have been circulating for months over the possibility of a new live-action Ghostbusters sequel in which the original movies' cast turns over their ghost-busting responsibilities to Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and other soft-middled Apatow acolytes. Since this is clearly too awesome to possibly be true, Rogen denied it a few weeks ago. But, today, our friends at /Film direct us to a new interview with Dan Akroyd in which he subtly suggests that he knows otherwise.

Yesterday, Akroyd told E! News the following (see video below):

Well, you know, two sharp young writers are purported to be writing the sequel, the third movie now. If I could interest Seth [Rogen] and Judd [Apatow] to be part of it, that would be an absolute dream.

Actually, we had no idea that anyone was actually writing a third Ghostbusters. And since we can't think of a single living person who wouldn't love to see a third Ghostbusters, we doubt this is something Apatow or Rogen would turn down. Surely this is in the works, right?

At Last, Rappers Discover M.I.A.

Remember when you first heard about M.I.A.? Maybe you caught the "Galang" video back in 2004 or downloaded that Diplo mix tape? You probably heard about her connections to the Tamil Tigers, too, or how she grew up on a council estate in London? It was one of those few hype moments that actually validated itself; you were probably pretty psyched. Or, maybe, like all the world's rappers apparently, you first heard her last month on the soundtrack to Pineapple Express. How else to explain the sudden rash of "Paper Planes" samples?

Just today, we found this remix, in which 50 Cent sandwiches some predictable but fun gun chatter between two "Planes" choruses, and on this mix tape, MF Doom has a turn as well, elegantly draping his slow flow over the mid-tempo beat. But the pinnacle of the trend is obviously "Swagger Like Us," which jacks the "no one on the corner has swagger like us" line for a very important cause: bringing together Jay-Z, T.I., Lil Wayne, and Kanye (a.k.a. the Internet’s Favorite Rappers) on one banger of a track. M.I.A. isn't totally new to the rap community, of course — we remember early adopters Bun B and Rich Boy hopping on the song when it was first released last summer. But, for whatever reason, it seems like most MCs are just now coming around. No complaints, though — we're just glad they finally caught on. We can't wait until 2012, when Cut Copy–sampling mix-tape tracks should be raining from the sky.

The Nineties Are Back! Or at Least L.A. Gear Is

L.A. Gear is making a comeback! With 90210 back on the tube, the timing couldn't have been more perfect for this nineties staple. (If only Jennie Garth would wear some bright-yellow high-tops.) The pair of sneakers you see at left is the first item from the revived line. These hot tamale "Fireball" kicks are just as delightfully neon as we remember, with the plum bow tie on the heel adding a modern twist. So it's like a throwback. But updated. Club Zonder Filter and Patta collaborated on these sneakers, which will first go on sale on their home turf in Amsterdam. If you hop over the pond for these, know first that we might see you there. Know second that each pair comes with a free T-shirt decorated, naturally, in Saved by the Bell shapes and neon colors. Are you getting just as nostalgic as we are looking at these? Suddenly we're dying to trade our high heels for sneakers and hit the basketball court Kareem Abdul Jabbar style. Which is weird, because as fashion girls we don't even know if our sweat glands still work.

Mixed Reports of Racial Diversity on This Season’s Runways Emerge

Black models filled only 94 of the 1,584 runway slots at February's Fashion Week. That's just 6 percent. Even fewer Latina girls were cast, nabbing seventeen slots — a whopping one percent. Will those numbers improve significantly at all this time around? Who knows?! Tracy Reese told the Daily News that agencies seem to be sending more diverse models to castings, perhaps inspired by the media's increased scrutiny of whitewashed runways. Pamella Roland also told the paper she noticed a fuller range of ethnicities among the models at her castings.

But casting director Roger Padilha, who's cast shows for Aurelio Costarella, the Blonds, Chris Han, and Harlan Bel, said his selections weren't any better than last season's.

"I saw about 400 girls, again, as I do every year," says Padilha. "My exact number was 378, from 10 agencies. And of those girls, I'd say that I saw about eight black girls. … Some of the girls that came in were not very good, so it isn't like I really have eight black girls to choose from. I have about three or four that made it into my 'yes' pile. So it's frustrating."

On the other hand, Robert Barr, who cast Yeohlee's show, told us he noticed show packages from agencies like Ford, Marilyn, Major, Elite, Click, and Trump included a particularly strong mix of ethnic girls. He added he specifically looked for girls representing a range of ethnicities and nationalities for the Yeohlee show, partly to make the runway diverse and partly because such an aesthetic best complements the collection. Thus the Yeohlee cast includes girls from Venezuela, Korea, Somalia, China, Sudan, Tunisia and Denmark, Hungary, and Malaysia, one half-black American, and one girl who is half-Indian, half-Dutch. Even so Barr still noticed packages from other agencies remained whitewashed.

Last season Jill Stuart was one of many labels that used only white girls in the show. CEO Ron Curtis told the Daily News the house had been interested in casting popular black models Jourdan Dunn and Liya Kebede, but couldn't because Calvin Klein booked them for the same time slot. If they were the only women of color the label pursued last season, we sure hope it expand its horizons this season. But Curtis couldn't confirm this year's cast would be any more representative of the world's population than last year's. We'll see soon enough.

‘Runway’ Recap: Wherein DVF Shills for AmEx

On last night's episode, Tim explains to the designers that they’ll be designing for a fashion legend. He takes them on a meatpacking adventure during which Blayne speculates that Mary-Kate Olsen will be the designer in question. Take off your hood and stop being such an idiot, Blayne. They reach a showroom and are greeted by a glamorous Diane Von Furstenberg, who’s had impeccable work done to her face in recent years. And here appears our first glimpse of the recurring theme of the evening: Kenley as a crybaby. She’s so moved to be working with DVF that she can’t stop the tears from pouring out of her beady black eyes. Annoying.

Diane says the designers will be creating a look for her fall collection, inspired by Marlene Dietrich’s singer-spy character in the movie Foreign Affair (which we have to admit, we haven’t seen … clearly we’ve been too busy watching trashy reality TV). “Thanks to my long relationship with American Express,” DVF shills, the look is going to be produced and sold to American Express members (“Thrilling!” says Tim). We don’t understand how that’s going to work — will it be featured in that snooty American Express rewards catalogue that our parents used to get? Is there some underground AmEx store that our paltry limit doesn’t get us into?

Anyway, the designers have fifteen minutes in DVF’s showroom, and Kenley still can’t stop crying with excitement. Stella can’t reach the fabric, and Tim sort of yells at her to figure it out, which is amusing … and then Kenley cries about how she just wants to do a dress. Why are you crying about that?? Blayne is sporting a headband and chose to do an outfit in black, a departure from his usual sea of neon. Stella doesn’t want to tell anyone what her design is, because she’s afraid someone’s going to steal her idea. Honey, don’t flatter yourself. Has anyone else noticed that even when Jerell’s speaking normally, he sounds like he’s on the verge of tears? Relax, Jerell! And Korto, who has placed in the top three so many times, still can’t manage a smile. Joe’s creating some cheap-looking backless top, and he hums a Chinese-sounding song. Quite possibly, Joe and his facial hair are racist … and Kenley can’t stop freaking crying about something or other. Get it together, woman.

Korto, Stella, and Joe's designs.Courtesy of Bravo

Tonight’s judges are Michael Kors, Heidi, DVF, and Fern Mallis, the senior V.P. of IMG Fashion. She’s in charge of NYC’s Fashion Week schedule and wields much power in the industry. On the runway, Joe’s half-kimono-like top and sloppy bottom look like a costume for the porn version of The King and I (Kors: “It looks odd”). Leanne’s dress is an elegant, long, purple-ish gown (Mallis likes “the ruffles down the back”). Terri rocks her usual pants look. Jerell’s outfit we don’t get at all — an Asian flight attendant? What’s with that little hat? Korto’s long print dress has a nice yellow pop (DVF thinks it’s “pretty”), while Blayne’s model wears confusing parachute pants. Suede shows a long, unflattering print dress (Kors: “Did she get dressed in the dark?”), and Stella’s vest-pant combo look really sloppy (DVF likes the idea, but not the execution). Kenley, for all her crying, managed to create a chic print sheath (Heidi thinks it’s “pretty,” though Kenley interrupts her before she can get another word in. Quiet, Kenley!).

So Terri, Jerell, and Blayne are safe. The winner is Leanne, and Kenley looks so pissed at this we have to laugh. Take that, crybaby! Sadly, Stella is out. We have to disagree with the judges on this one, because Joe’s outfit was an epic disaster. Plus, he’s not as funny as Stella. She goes into the room to say good-bye, and KENLEY IS STILL CRYING. For the love of God. Tim shows Stella out, calling it “an ebullient departure!” Ha! Stella’s classic parting words? “If you like my stuff, come buy it. If not, I don’t care.” Good-bye, Stella. We’ll miss your leath-ah face.

Kanye West Releasing New Album, Cements Status As World’s Most Productive Person

Since the daily rigors of maintaining the world's greatest blog clearly haven't kept him busy enough this past year, Kanye West is purportedly putting the finishing touches on his fourth album, to be released in December. Nah Right reports that said album will be preceded by the single "Love LockDown," which he previewed (sort of) at a show in L.A. last week. (MTV UK claims the track is hitting iTunes on Monday.) When is he recording this thing? We're bloggers too, and we can't even find the time to put on pants most days. And isn't he opening a restaurant chain and producing the new Jay-Z album, also allegedly due in December? Clearly our lives have been wasted.

Just this week we heard Jennifer Aniston would play a stalker, and now comes news that Oprah is in final talks to appear on the show as well: "Her story would also play into a feud between Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) and Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski) that will continue through several episodes." Stock up on the tissues, America — this could be more emotional than the finale to MILF Island. [E!]

Aaron Eckhart Gives a Harvey Dent Update

Aaron Eckhart has declared his Dark Knight character Harvey Dent (spoiler alert!) "dead as a doornail." While the film is fairly clear about Dent's demise, its success, and Eckhart's acclaimed performance had, most assumed, left the door open for some comic-book trickery that would bring the character back in a follow-up. But director Chris Nolan is firm on Harvey Dent's status. Says Eckhart, "I asked Chris [Nolan] that question and he goes, 'You're dead,' before I could even get the question out of my mouth. 'Hey Chris, am I…' 'You're dead!'" [Coming Soon]

Jamie-Lynn Sigler to Launch ‘C.J. Free’ Jewelry Line

We couldn't help but notice Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s wrists at last night's fifth-season premiere of Entourage, in which the Sopranos star makes a cameo appearance as herself. Her delicate gold bracelets adorned with ladybug and butterfly charms were from the soon-to-be released jewelry line she's developing with one of her best friends. “We just started beading these gold bracelets with all different types of gold one day and started playing with different charms, and we thought, Hey, let’s do it,” Sigler said. The line is called C.J. Free, after her friend’s son, and she expects the goods to be available in late fall, although she's unsure where. “We’re trying to be really selective,” Sigler tells us. “We don’t know if we’re just going to do custom orders or put it in stores. We’re figuring it all out now. But we’ll come out with it and talk about it when we’re ready.”
