Shifted by 1 week

SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX was confirmed for September 12 release, but the makers have decided to shift its release date by one week. The post-production work has been on schedule, no complaints. So why this sudden postponement? "Warner Bros. [presenters of SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX] had confirmed September 12 as the domestic release and September 19 as the international release. However, we felt that the pirated DVDs would ruin the international business if we kept different dates for domestic and international release. So we decided to shift the domestic date by one week. That explains why SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX is now arriving on September 19," director Shona Urvashi confirms.

International version?

Now that ROCK ON!! has found acceptance, there's talk that the film will be released all over again in key international markets. Sure, the film has had an international release, but rumours are rife that the makers will re-release the film with a shorter version and at places, by dubbing in English. There's another [bizarre] story doing the rounds as well. It seems, producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have entrusted Abhishek Kapoor the responsibility of making the second instalment of ROCK ON 2 [sequel]. "Completely utrue. We have no such plans," producer Ritesh Sidhwani clarifies, "We're busy enjoying the success. Just can't think of anything else." Point noted!

"Rock On for us is not just a film, it's an experience" - Farhan Akhtar

He is the man who everyone wants to be. His is the name that everybody wants to adopt! His is the film that everybody wants to make! We are indeed talking about the 'Friday's favourite' man, Farhan Akhtar, who has given Bollywood a new identity to enjoy. If his films like Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya and Don 2 are any indication of the genius that this master filmmaker is made of, then his latest hit flick, Rock On, only confirms that it really takes people (read 'cult' filmmakers) like him to shake up and shape up the movie scene! Bollywood Hungama caught up with this sheer genius for an exclusive tête-à-tête. Presented here are the excerpts of this classic interview: Farhan, to start of with, tell us as to how did the story of Rock On evolve? The story of Rock On is a well-thought of thing, that's written by its director Abhishek 'Gattu' Kapoor, who has also written the screenplay. When Gattu and the film's co-writer Pubali were on their first draft stages of the film, Gattu told me the film's story and gave me the brief outline of the film. I was very attracted to it as I found it to be a very special story, something that had a very warm and real life like characters. I found that all the characters were very identifiable and the film also had the kind of music that I love and would relate to. All of this made me decide completely that I want to be a part of this project. That's how the ball was set rolling! I found all the Rock On's characters very identifiable and it had the music that I love and would relate to Who took the call on the casting aspect? You or Abhishek? It was quite tricky for casting in a film like Rock On, where there are four principal characters and where all of these characters are equally important. The reason why I used the 'tricky' word is because if you cast a person who is a bigger star than what the part requires, then, it can shift the balance for the viewer who is watching the film. Hence, it was very important for us to cast very aptly. We are very fortunate that Abhishek had his characters' cast in place for Purab and Luke. After that, he and I spoke to Arjun Rampal for the role of Joe. If you see the film, you will know that it's not just the boys, but also the girls (Shahana and Prachi) are cast in a way that you will start believing in these people as the film's characters with no pre-conceived notions. You will start believing in these people as Rock On's characters with no pre conceived notions Since this kind of genre (rock music et al) has been never attempted or tried in Bollywood because of the risk factors at the B-O, what made you walk the path? Were you not scared of risks? I can't speak for other people, but, for me, there was no risk involved. The very first day when Abhishek spoke to me about the story, I did not waste a single moment in saying, Yes. I was just completely taken in by the story. Even though there is rock culture, the film is just not about only that, as it goes beyond all that and much more. The film's basically an emotionally strong story that exhibits the importance of friendships, relationships…the kind of stuff that you have chosen to have in your life. The film speaks about these aspects in a very mature and a deep level. That is what affected me the most when I heard the script. All of this left no doubt in my mind about the making of the movie. The film's basically an emotionally strong story that's exhibits the importance of friendships, relationships News has it that you were so tad impressed with the way the Rock On has shaped up, that you are thinking to land up forming a real life rock band! Is that true? Rock On for us (Purab, Arjun, Luke and me) is not just a film, it's an experience. I think that's the power of music. And when you play music together, there's an invisible bond that develops between the members. We really enjoyed the process or rehearsing and jamming with each other so much that we are very strongly contemplating on the fact that we should continue practicing. Hopefully, by the end of this year, we should be able to pull it off! And the line up of the band will be exactly what you saw in the film! Rock On for us (Purab, Arjun, Luke and me) is not just a film, it's an experience. How were the first and the last day of the shoot for Farhan the 'Actor'? Let it be direction or acting, the first day is always nerve racking as it's 'that' day that really sets the tempo and the pace of the days to come. Of course, one has to focus on each and every day very hard after that, but the first day is always the first day, the most memorable one! What was also interesting about Rock On is that we shot the first scene of the film on the first day and the last scene on the last day! The fact also remained that since all of us bonded very well as friends helped the film in a big way! We shot the first scene of Rock On the first day and the last scene on the last day! Farhan, has anybody ever told you that your voice resembles Chris Martin, the lead singer of Cold Play? The only person who has ever told me that is Gattu. When we met for the first time he immediately told me 'Whenever I hear your voice, it reminds me of Chris Martin. That's why I want to know if you can sing'. Whenever I hear your voice, it reminds me of Chris Martin. That's why I want to know if you can sing How was your first rendezvous with the microphone as a singer? I've been playing the guitar and have been singing for years now. So, on some level, the film was really a dream come true for me. Also, to be working in an album with a different kind of role with the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy was indeed different. Normally, I sit with them (S-E-L) as a director, extracting the best music out if them. But this time round, I was this someone whom they were focusing on and trying to get the best out of as a singer, which was a completely new experience. But trust me! All of us had a fantastic time. The concept of promoting Rock On through live concert is indeed a noble idea. Whose brainwave was it? The concept of Rock On concerts was more of a mutual decision that was unanimously thought of by all of us. When we were brainstorming (read 'jamming') on new ideas to promote the film, everyone of us came up with the idea of organizing concerts. We started off with the film's music release, which was followed by a series of concerts at various locations in India. The concept of Rock On concerts was more of a mutual decision that was unanimously thought of by all of us It's often seen that directors either repeat the signature tune or some other music from their previous hit film to their next one. You too have done that with Lakshya's riff in Rock On. Will Rock On get carried forward to your next film? I really doubt that if it's going to happen at all. The kind of music that Rock On has got, it really works damn well in the film and for the film. I do agree that we have used a certain tune of my previous film Lakshya. That's because, when we were recording the music for Lakshya, we were really very excited with that particular piece of music. And post the release of Lakshya; we felt that it did not get proper justice that it deserved. And this is something that was always on my mind. And that's why, when we were recording for Rock On, the first thing that S-E-L and I decided was about using the said piece music from Lakshya in Rock On. We felt that it a certain tune from Lakshya did not get the recognition it deserved Did you offer any direction tips to Abhishek, considering the fact that you are more experienced than him? If at all he ever felt the need to ask for any advice, I would give it to him. But he was very clear about what he wanted as he has lived with the script for long. As a producer, Ritesh (Sidhwani) and I offered him whatever we could. You had told somewhere that you let Gattu direct the film because it was his idea all through. If there was any other filmmaker in his place, would you have still said yes to this film? If I had seen anyone as committed, passionate and sincere about the script as Gattu is, then yes. Rock On is all about 'rediscovering the joy of living a complete life'. Is there anything in your life that you feel is incomplete? As of now, I am so very happy about the way things are happening in and around me that I am left with no time to think of the things that are unfulfilled! The film has just released and I know that its extremely tiring leading up to that point. As a matter of fact, I am totally drenched out from all the aspects: mentally, physically and even emotionally! I am totally drenched out from all the aspects: mentally, physically and even emotionally! What's your take on the rock scene in India as compared to abroad? I feel that rock in India is in its better stages. The fact that a film is being made on rock music itself proves that the rock scene in India has surpassed its nascent stages and I am sure that the coming days will only see rock on a larger canvass! Do you feel that Rock On will do the same to the Indian rock scene what Chak De India and sportsmen like Abhinav Bindra did to the sports scene in India? Frankly speaking, I cannot predict that. But I can tell you one thing that Rock On has indeed brought the spotlight onto rock music. It has also made people aware that the rock music is not niche music. According to me, the rock music shares its basic fundamentals with Hindi film music. I know there are lots of people in India who are very passionate about rock music and there are lots of them who get frustrated at times because of the lack of a proper platform and an outlet. I just hope that people by now are aware of rock music and will surely look up to it! Lastly, when do we see Farhan 'Rocking' the silver screen again? Well, there's Luck By Chance by sister Zoha which should release by January- February next year. After that, I'm directing Voice From The Sky, followed by Don 2 and a couple of other films with other directors. Till then, do keep rocking!

In case you are wondering who the lucky boy is, its none other than Bollywood's latest pin-up boy and Aamir's very own bhanja- Imran Khan. Himesh foresaw trouble for his song 'Hari Om', kept alternatives ready

Click above for more stills One of Himesh Reshammiya's songs 'Hari Om Hari Om' in Karzzzz got itself into trouble. Cleverer than the moral watchdogs after being pulled up for extolling the gods in the song 'Asalaam Waalaikum', Himesh already had alternative situations ready for the Karzzzz song. He promptly deleted the supposedly offensive portion and added the required visual. Says Himesh, "Yes, we had changed the song in Aap Ka Surroor when some people had objected to it. In Karzzzz, the censors had problem with the dancers in the 'Hari Om Hari' song. We quickly changed that. We didn't want any problems. So, we offered them a number of alternatives and went by whichever they liked." Earlier a song in Shashi Ranjan's Dhoom Dhadakka showing Aarti Chhabria cavorting to the words 'Hari Om' had to be changed at the last minute to 'Jale Mome'. Says Himesh, "But the censor board had no problems with the words Hari Om. What they objected to was the chorus dancers. So we replaced the dancers with my close-ups. So every time the words 'Hari Om' come on, it's only me solo on screen. Otherwise, 'Hari Om' aren't words being used in our films for the first time." Elaborates the composer-singer-actor, "We preferred to show the final censored version in the promotional clippings. I think religious and cultural sentiments must be kept in mind. And guidelines for these must be followed. I really don't find it restrictive. Get your material censored. And have alternatives ready, like we did. And people like us in the entertainment business are always under scrutiny. So we have to be extra-careful. The music of Karzzzz is so popular. We wouldn't like to spoil it by hurting anyone. I've never ever compromised with my music. I can never be accused of hurting anyone or copying anyone's songs."

Jagmohan Mundra's film on terrorism in trouble

Jagmohan Mundra whose career is substantially based on biopics of famous people stands accused of exploiting the tragic killing of the innocent Brazilian bystander Jean Charles de Menezes in the July 2007 tube station bombing in London. When last week Mundra's Shoot On Sight opened in London he was accused of exploiting and distorting the facts behind the gruesome tragedy that happened a year ago. Mundra is unfazed and says the dead guy's family is being incited into causing trouble. "I'm used to my biopics getting into trouble. I'm sure you remember the problems that were caused by Bhanwari Devi when I made a film on her gruesome gang rape (Bawandar). More recently, after Provoked about domestic violence, I went through a similar ordeal. And now my Sonia Gandhi epic has been put on hold on request from the Congress until the general elections. It can never be done with the Congress' active participation. But I hope we can eventually make the film without them breathing down our backs with litigations." And that's precisely how Mundra feels at the moment. "The accusation that I've exploited the real-life tragedy in Shoot On Sight is totally unfounded. The relatives and family of de Menezes are being provoked into making these statements. None of these protestors have actually seen the film. It reminds me of what happened with Salman Rushdie after he wrote The Satanic Verses. Not too many had actually read the novel when a fatwa was passed against him. So I don't know what they are protesting about. Also the flak from the British press includes statements on how Shoot On Sight is like a TV drama. I don't take that as an insult. I've great respect for the TV medium." Mundra admits Shoot On Sight had a lower opening in London than his earlier biopic Provoked. "That's because Provoked featured Aishwarya Rai, a known international name," says Mundra implying that Naseruddin Shah doesn't have the same international appeal. "Naseer has brought his own amazing insights into the role. And if Amitabh Bachchan had played the part as I had planned, he'd have imparted his own gravitas", adds Mundra. About Naseer refusing to dub the Hindi version of Shoot On Sight Mundra says, "I respect his decision. But I also have to respect my producer's decision. They need to earn back their money. And what is wrong with Brits talking in Hindi? Didn't Robbie Coltrane argue Aishwarya's case in Hindi in Provoked? What about all the Japanese characters in the World War 2 epic Tora Tora Tora speaking in English? And in Devdas we heard the characters talking in Hindi when they were all speaking in Bengali in the novel. Cinema is all about suspension of disbelief. It's also at the end of the day a commercial venture. My Indian producers need to make back their money when they release the film on September 19. And I'd rather have British characters making themselves comprehensible to audiences in Rajasthan and Bihar than be linguistically correct." Sighing Mundra ends, "Let's hope my distributor Pyramid does a better job of my Shoot On Sight than they did with their last film Mukhbiir."

'Golmaal Returns': It's bigger, it's better

Click above for more stills Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision and director Rohit Shetty make a winning combo. The producer-director duo came together in GOLMAAL and the results were favourable. The laughathon proved a money spinner, with the producers/distributors laughing all the way to the bank. Now the winning combo has teamed up for the second time in GOLMAAL RETURNS. And the second instalment of the GOLMAAL franchise promises even more fun. How do we know that? Well, this writer had an exclusive dekho of its first promo as also two [entire] songs from the film [the promos will be on air by mid-September]. GOLMAAL RETURNS promises double dhamaal as there's glamour in abundance this time. Besides a bevy of beauties [Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley and Anjana Sukhani], there's a new actor in place of Sharman Joshi. It's Shreyas Talpade. What does one look forward to in the promo and also in those two songs? We won't reveal much, but here's something that you can relish… In Ajay's debut-making film PHOOL AUR KAANTE, the actor made a grand entry atop two moving bikes. The same feat was repeated in GOLMAAL. Now watch Ajay atop two Hummers, while Kareena makes an entry on a sports bike. The title song has all the germs to be a chartbuster. The energy is infectious and you're hooked on to it the moment you watch it. But the song that also catches your attention is the one where Ajay and Arshad are at loggerheads. Right from bows and arrows to blasts, this song has it all. The makers have spent a fortune [Rs. 2.5 cr.?] on this number. If the songs of GOLMAAL RETURNS are an indication of what is to follow, expect a laugh-riot to explode this Diwali.

RGV to start 'Phoonk 2'

Now that PHOONK has given a fillip to Ramgopal Varma's career, the maverick film-maker is all set to start PHOONK 2. "PHOONK is a brand," RGV tells me, "The best thing about this genre is that you can keep experimenting with varied themes. Supernatural themes will never go out of vogue as long as the fear of the unknown exists." PHOONK 2 will begin where PHOONK ended. The climax of PHOONK witnessed the clash of good [Sudeep and tantrik Zakir Hussain] versus evil [Ashwini Kalsekar, who does black magic on Sudeep's daughter] and how the tantrik eliminates Ashwini. Now PHOONK 2 will begin with Ashwini Kalsekar's ghost killing the tantrik [Zakir Hussain] at the very start and entering Sudeep's wife's [Amruta Khanvilkar] body. "Ashwini's aatma seeks revenge. Obviously, Sudeep wouldn't harm his wife… That's the beginning point of PHOONK 2," RGV enlightens. Meanwhile, RGV makes a startling revelation. He isn't making the third instalment of SARKAR. RGV had announced SARKAR 3 soon after the release of SARKAR RAJ, but has dropped the plans now.
