"Rock On for us is not just a film, it's an experience" - Farhan Akhtar

He is the man who everyone wants to be. His is the name that everybody wants to adopt! His is the film that everybody wants to make! We are indeed talking about the 'Friday's favourite' man, Farhan Akhtar, who has given Bollywood a new identity to enjoy. If his films like Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya and Don 2 are any indication of the genius that this master filmmaker is made of, then his latest hit flick, Rock On, only confirms that it really takes people (read 'cult' filmmakers) like him to shake up and shape up the movie scene! Bollywood Hungama caught up with this sheer genius for an exclusive tête-à-tête. Presented here are the excerpts of this classic interview: Farhan, to start of with, tell us as to how did the story of Rock On evolve? The story of Rock On is a well-thought of thing, that's written by its director Abhishek 'Gattu' Kapoor, who has also written the screenplay. When Gattu and the film's co-writer Pubali were on their first draft stages of the film, Gattu told me the film's story and gave me the brief outline of the film. I was very attracted to it as I found it to be a very special story, something that had a very warm and real life like characters. I found that all the characters were very identifiable and the film also had the kind of music that I love and would relate to. All of this made me decide completely that I want to be a part of this project. That's how the ball was set rolling! I found all the Rock On's characters very identifiable and it had the music that I love and would relate to Who took the call on the casting aspect? You or Abhishek? It was quite tricky for casting in a film like Rock On, where there are four principal characters and where all of these characters are equally important. The reason why I used the 'tricky' word is because if you cast a person who is a bigger star than what the part requires, then, it can shift the balance for the viewer who is watching the film. Hence, it was very important for us to cast very aptly. We are very fortunate that Abhishek had his characters' cast in place for Purab and Luke. After that, he and I spoke to Arjun Rampal for the role of Joe. If you see the film, you will know that it's not just the boys, but also the girls (Shahana and Prachi) are cast in a way that you will start believing in these people as the film's characters with no pre-conceived notions. You will start believing in these people as Rock On's characters with no pre conceived notions Since this kind of genre (rock music et al) has been never attempted or tried in Bollywood because of the risk factors at the B-O, what made you walk the path? Were you not scared of risks? I can't speak for other people, but, for me, there was no risk involved. The very first day when Abhishek spoke to me about the story, I did not waste a single moment in saying, Yes. I was just completely taken in by the story. Even though there is rock culture, the film is just not about only that, as it goes beyond all that and much more. The film's basically an emotionally strong story that exhibits the importance of friendships, relationships…the kind of stuff that you have chosen to have in your life. The film speaks about these aspects in a very mature and a deep level. That is what affected me the most when I heard the script. All of this left no doubt in my mind about the making of the movie. The film's basically an emotionally strong story that's exhibits the importance of friendships, relationships News has it that you were so tad impressed with the way the Rock On has shaped up, that you are thinking to land up forming a real life rock band! Is that true? Rock On for us (Purab, Arjun, Luke and me) is not just a film, it's an experience. I think that's the power of music. And when you play music together, there's an invisible bond that develops between the members. We really enjoyed the process or rehearsing and jamming with each other so much that we are very strongly contemplating on the fact that we should continue practicing. Hopefully, by the end of this year, we should be able to pull it off! And the line up of the band will be exactly what you saw in the film! Rock On for us (Purab, Arjun, Luke and me) is not just a film, it's an experience. How were the first and the last day of the shoot for Farhan the 'Actor'? Let it be direction or acting, the first day is always nerve racking as it's 'that' day that really sets the tempo and the pace of the days to come. Of course, one has to focus on each and every day very hard after that, but the first day is always the first day, the most memorable one! What was also interesting about Rock On is that we shot the first scene of the film on the first day and the last scene on the last day! The fact also remained that since all of us bonded very well as friends helped the film in a big way! We shot the first scene of Rock On the first day and the last scene on the last day! Farhan, has anybody ever told you that your voice resembles Chris Martin, the lead singer of Cold Play? The only person who has ever told me that is Gattu. When we met for the first time he immediately told me 'Whenever I hear your voice, it reminds me of Chris Martin. That's why I want to know if you can sing'. Whenever I hear your voice, it reminds me of Chris Martin. That's why I want to know if you can sing How was your first rendezvous with the microphone as a singer? I've been playing the guitar and have been singing for years now. So, on some level, the film was really a dream come true for me. Also, to be working in an album with a different kind of role with the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy was indeed different. Normally, I sit with them (S-E-L) as a director, extracting the best music out if them. But this time round, I was this someone whom they were focusing on and trying to get the best out of as a singer, which was a completely new experience. But trust me! All of us had a fantastic time. The concept of promoting Rock On through live concert is indeed a noble idea. Whose brainwave was it? The concept of Rock On concerts was more of a mutual decision that was unanimously thought of by all of us. When we were brainstorming (read 'jamming') on new ideas to promote the film, everyone of us came up with the idea of organizing concerts. We started off with the film's music release, which was followed by a series of concerts at various locations in India. The concept of Rock On concerts was more of a mutual decision that was unanimously thought of by all of us It's often seen that directors either repeat the signature tune or some other music from their previous hit film to their next one. You too have done that with Lakshya's riff in Rock On. Will Rock On get carried forward to your next film? I really doubt that if it's going to happen at all. The kind of music that Rock On has got, it really works damn well in the film and for the film. I do agree that we have used a certain tune of my previous film Lakshya. That's because, when we were recording the music for Lakshya, we were really very excited with that particular piece of music. And post the release of Lakshya; we felt that it did not get proper justice that it deserved. And this is something that was always on my mind. And that's why, when we were recording for Rock On, the first thing that S-E-L and I decided was about using the said piece music from Lakshya in Rock On. We felt that it a certain tune from Lakshya did not get the recognition it deserved Did you offer any direction tips to Abhishek, considering the fact that you are more experienced than him? If at all he ever felt the need to ask for any advice, I would give it to him. But he was very clear about what he wanted as he has lived with the script for long. As a producer, Ritesh (Sidhwani) and I offered him whatever we could. You had told somewhere that you let Gattu direct the film because it was his idea all through. If there was any other filmmaker in his place, would you have still said yes to this film? If I had seen anyone as committed, passionate and sincere about the script as Gattu is, then yes. Rock On is all about 'rediscovering the joy of living a complete life'. Is there anything in your life that you feel is incomplete? As of now, I am so very happy about the way things are happening in and around me that I am left with no time to think of the things that are unfulfilled! The film has just released and I know that its extremely tiring leading up to that point. As a matter of fact, I am totally drenched out from all the aspects: mentally, physically and even emotionally! I am totally drenched out from all the aspects: mentally, physically and even emotionally! What's your take on the rock scene in India as compared to abroad? I feel that rock in India is in its better stages. The fact that a film is being made on rock music itself proves that the rock scene in India has surpassed its nascent stages and I am sure that the coming days will only see rock on a larger canvass! Do you feel that Rock On will do the same to the Indian rock scene what Chak De India and sportsmen like Abhinav Bindra did to the sports scene in India? Frankly speaking, I cannot predict that. But I can tell you one thing that Rock On has indeed brought the spotlight onto rock music. It has also made people aware that the rock music is not niche music. According to me, the rock music shares its basic fundamentals with Hindi film music. I know there are lots of people in India who are very passionate about rock music and there are lots of them who get frustrated at times because of the lack of a proper platform and an outlet. I just hope that people by now are aware of rock music and will surely look up to it! Lastly, when do we see Farhan 'Rocking' the silver screen again? Well, there's Luck By Chance by sister Zoha which should release by January- February next year. After that, I'm directing Voice From The Sky, followed by Don 2 and a couple of other films with other directors. Till then, do keep rocking!

Jagmohan Mundra's film on terrorism in trouble

Jagmohan Mundra whose career is substantially based on biopics of famous people stands accused of exploiting the tragic killing of the innocent Brazilian bystander Jean Charles de Menezes in the July 2007 tube station bombing in London. When last week Mundra's Shoot On Sight opened in London he was accused of exploiting and distorting the facts behind the gruesome tragedy that happened a year ago. Mundra is unfazed and says the dead guy's family is being incited into causing trouble. "I'm used to my biopics getting into trouble. I'm sure you remember the problems that were caused by Bhanwari Devi when I made a film on her gruesome gang rape (Bawandar). More recently, after Provoked about domestic violence, I went through a similar ordeal. And now my Sonia Gandhi epic has been put on hold on request from the Congress until the general elections. It can never be done with the Congress' active participation. But I hope we can eventually make the film without them breathing down our backs with litigations." And that's precisely how Mundra feels at the moment. "The accusation that I've exploited the real-life tragedy in Shoot On Sight is totally unfounded. The relatives and family of de Menezes are being provoked into making these statements. None of these protestors have actually seen the film. It reminds me of what happened with Salman Rushdie after he wrote The Satanic Verses. Not too many had actually read the novel when a fatwa was passed against him. So I don't know what they are protesting about. Also the flak from the British press includes statements on how Shoot On Sight is like a TV drama. I don't take that as an insult. I've great respect for the TV medium." Mundra admits Shoot On Sight had a lower opening in London than his earlier biopic Provoked. "That's because Provoked featured Aishwarya Rai, a known international name," says Mundra implying that Naseruddin Shah doesn't have the same international appeal. "Naseer has brought his own amazing insights into the role. And if Amitabh Bachchan had played the part as I had planned, he'd have imparted his own gravitas", adds Mundra. About Naseer refusing to dub the Hindi version of Shoot On Sight Mundra says, "I respect his decision. But I also have to respect my producer's decision. They need to earn back their money. And what is wrong with Brits talking in Hindi? Didn't Robbie Coltrane argue Aishwarya's case in Hindi in Provoked? What about all the Japanese characters in the World War 2 epic Tora Tora Tora speaking in English? And in Devdas we heard the characters talking in Hindi when they were all speaking in Bengali in the novel. Cinema is all about suspension of disbelief. It's also at the end of the day a commercial venture. My Indian producers need to make back their money when they release the film on September 19. And I'd rather have British characters making themselves comprehensible to audiences in Rajasthan and Bihar than be linguistically correct." Sighing Mundra ends, "Let's hope my distributor Pyramid does a better job of my Shoot On Sight than they did with their last film Mukhbiir."

'Golmaal Returns': It's bigger, it's better

Click above for more stills Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision and director Rohit Shetty make a winning combo. The producer-director duo came together in GOLMAAL and the results were favourable. The laughathon proved a money spinner, with the producers/distributors laughing all the way to the bank. Now the winning combo has teamed up for the second time in GOLMAAL RETURNS. And the second instalment of the GOLMAAL franchise promises even more fun. How do we know that? Well, this writer had an exclusive dekho of its first promo as also two [entire] songs from the film [the promos will be on air by mid-September]. GOLMAAL RETURNS promises double dhamaal as there's glamour in abundance this time. Besides a bevy of beauties [Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley and Anjana Sukhani], there's a new actor in place of Sharman Joshi. It's Shreyas Talpade. What does one look forward to in the promo and also in those two songs? We won't reveal much, but here's something that you can relish… In Ajay's debut-making film PHOOL AUR KAANTE, the actor made a grand entry atop two moving bikes. The same feat was repeated in GOLMAAL. Now watch Ajay atop two Hummers, while Kareena makes an entry on a sports bike. The title song has all the germs to be a chartbuster. The energy is infectious and you're hooked on to it the moment you watch it. But the song that also catches your attention is the one where Ajay and Arshad are at loggerheads. Right from bows and arrows to blasts, this song has it all. The makers have spent a fortune [Rs. 2.5 cr.?] on this number. If the songs of GOLMAAL RETURNS are an indication of what is to follow, expect a laugh-riot to explode this Diwali.

RGV to start 'Phoonk 2'

Now that PHOONK has given a fillip to Ramgopal Varma's career, the maverick film-maker is all set to start PHOONK 2. "PHOONK is a brand," RGV tells me, "The best thing about this genre is that you can keep experimenting with varied themes. Supernatural themes will never go out of vogue as long as the fear of the unknown exists." PHOONK 2 will begin where PHOONK ended. The climax of PHOONK witnessed the clash of good [Sudeep and tantrik Zakir Hussain] versus evil [Ashwini Kalsekar, who does black magic on Sudeep's daughter] and how the tantrik eliminates Ashwini. Now PHOONK 2 will begin with Ashwini Kalsekar's ghost killing the tantrik [Zakir Hussain] at the very start and entering Sudeep's wife's [Amruta Khanvilkar] body. "Ashwini's aatma seeks revenge. Obviously, Sudeep wouldn't harm his wife… That's the beginning point of PHOONK 2," RGV enlightens. Meanwhile, RGV makes a startling revelation. He isn't making the third instalment of SARKAR. RGV had announced SARKAR 3 soon after the release of SARKAR RAJ, but has dropped the plans now.

Most heroines wouldn't want to get into that de-glam space especially in a film that's driven by my character. But she agreed." The case of Riteish is even more touching. Bobby had once agreed to play Riteish's bade bhaiyya in E Niwas' Bardaasht. Now it was Riteish's turn to pay off the debt. Says Bobby, "Riteish Deshmukh was very sweet. He agreed to play the small part of my friend in Chamku without a second thought at a time when he's busy doing major parts." Both Sunny and Bobby have had serious problems casting for female leads in their home productions The Man and Chamku, respectively. Old friends Priyanka and Shilpa Shetty have happily stepped in to save the (Fri)day. One problem solved, Bobby is now is another quandary. After losing ten kgs for his role in Chamku, Bobby Deol is now heavily into chocolates. In fact he just can't do without them. And his family is very worried. "It wasn't easy for me to lose weight. But once I made up my mind, I did it. But now I'm trying to make back that weight and binging on chocolates. I'm even stealing them from my sons," laughs the reticent Deol. More dilemma. Bobby had to cut his hair really short for his part. "I was reluctant. But it was one of the pre-conditions for doing Chamku. I was wondering if I should grow it back to the way it was. I've decided to stick to short hair. I feel I can play more characters this way. Also, my hair dries after a shower even before I towel it. I also don't have to use any hair product." When Bobby first heard the title he was taken aback. "I thought Chamku was just a working title. But it's my character's name. And it completely fits in." Bobby plays a guy from Bihar who becomes a Naxalite after his family is brutally murdered. "I play a guy who never gets choices in life. He has no beliefs no desires until he meets a woman who makes him realize he has the right to happiness. Bobby did a reality show recently. "Dus Ka Dum with Salman was my first reality show, and with Priyanka. In the beginning I was nervous. I've known Salman for years. He used to take me horse riding and for bike stunts. In 2000 and 2003 we did stage shows together. He made me comfortable on the show. So did Priyanka."

"Arjun never let me feel that I am new or anything lesser than him" - Shahana

Click above for more stills The moment when people started 'knowing' her as Payal Gandhi, she announced that she is Gina Fernandes. And the moment her name was catching on, she said 'Rock On' with Debbie! We are sure that you must be off tracked about who is this 'she' we are talking about. She is none other than Payal aka Gina aka Debbie aka ….the one and only Shahana Goswami! Onscreen she was the woman responsible for Arjun Rampal's success in the season's super duper blockbuster Rock On. But off screen, she has been hugely responsible for many films like Yun Hota To Kya Hota, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. etc. Bollywood Hungama caught up with this firebrand actress and Man! all that we could say is Rock On Shahana! From your first film, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota to now Rock On and Ru Ba Ru, how has the film industry treated you? It may sound very clichéd but I believe I have been very lucky mainly because I started very young. I filmed for Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Ru Ba Ru when I was in college. And once I graduated, I dwelled more into films and did Tera Kya Hoga Johnny? with Mr. Sudhir Mishra and Firaaq with Nandita Das. And then Rock On happened. In short, I have done a wide variety of films just as I had intended to. I am really grateful and glad that I got to do so many interesting roles and characters. Actually, I would say I'm pleasantly surprised as I got a lot more than I thought and things that matched by taste and sensibilities. I think I have just been very lucky. I have done a wide variety of films just as I had intended to. I am really grateful and glad that I got to do so many interesting roles and characters. How did you bag the role in Rock On? Shaanu Sharma and Simran are my friends and they were in the middle of casting for Rock On at that time. They happened to suggest my name to Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor director of Rock On), and I went ahead to meet him. I auditioned for the film, later I got a call, and there I was in the film. How was it playing a role opposite the stylish and hot Arjun Rampal? It was great. Luckily, we knew each other from my Honeymoon Travels…days and since it was a complete outdoor shoot we interacted a lot regarding work and a lot of other things as well. In spite of meeting him in a new space, he never let me feel that I am new or anything lesser than him. He always treated me as an equal; we would discus our characters, scenes, our history, our equation, and our relationship in terms of the film. Arjun encouraged me throughout the making of this film. He is full of surprises and often corrected me in the right places. It was a team effort and I think we managed to pull it off very well. He's been overtly generous and sweet. Arjun never let me feel that I am new or anything lesser than him. He always treated me as an equal; we would discus our characters, scenes Farhan Akhtar a director and now an actor how was your equation with him? Very good. Considering, we all come from similar background and sensibility we got along very well. Farhan is fantastic person and an even fantabulous actor, which once you see Rock On you will completely agree with. It does not always happen that if a person is a good director he knows how to self-execute it on screen but Farhan breaks all paths. The best thing about him is, in spite of being super talented he is also very humble about everything and his sincerity in work shows. I have a great rapport with him. It does not always happen that if a person is a good director he knows how to self-execute it on screen but Farhan breaks all paths This film is a debut film for Farhan and Prachi being a senior in terms of acting how did it feel? (Laughs) I think it is not fair to be so technical about things. Just because someone has not faced the camera that does not mean they do not know how to act. I think Farhan, whether he on celluloid or not, he is far more experienced since he was a director before being an actor. Similarly, Prachi has acted on television before and has shouldered such a huge show all alone, which is comment worthy. So I have never felt that I'm more senior to them in any way, I always felt like the baby of the family and I still hold that post. I'm a lot inexperienced than any of them. So what's your role in Rock On? I play Arjun Rampal's girlfriend who eventually becomes his wife. My character is named Debbie. The interesting feature about this character is her existence along with the journey of the band members. She was with them when they were together and even ten years later. Everyone changes quite drastically after time but she is the only female character who shares this journey with them. Since Prachi is there only in the present. You see a stark difference in her, and she is not this quintessential heroine who is always sweet and loving. She is a very practical woman; you see how life and time has changed her due to circumstances. Its not melodramatic, it is just how drudgery of life changes you that for me was an interesting graph to play out as an actor. Was Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor) strict with you or anyone? Not at all, Abhishek gives lot of space to his actors. And he's very clear about what he wants. At the end of the day when we sit to discuss shots and scenes if there is anything anyone suggests, Gattu will always try to use it if he can. I won't call him a strict director at all; he always lets the rhythm of the actors to take over. I never found him to be a guiding, or pointing or any thing of that sort. Rock On is huge musical background. What's your favourite track? I generally like Rock music. But I am a little strange in my taste of music. I never follow one genre so I like all kind of music. But when you talk about Rock On it's really difficult to choose. With Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy's music, the songs go to a different level all together. In addition to that, you have Farhan's voice to it as well, what more can you ask for. I really enjoy listening to his voice; it really fits the part to the bill. I think each song is different from another and yet they have a common thread. I cannot choose I love them all. What's your personal favorite scene in the entire film? That's tough to answer again, the film has lot of moments, it becomes very difficult to pick a scene but every one has done such a great job that there are so many little parts which really stand out. It would be little unfair to pick one scene. Hmmm…I think my favorite scene would be where I come and speak to Farhan about something. I think that point in the film brings a certain side to my character that one has not seen very often. I think my favorite scene would be where I come and speak to Farhan about something. I think that point in the film brings a certain side to my character that one has not seen very often Could share some memorable moments spent during the making of this film? I have treasured some amazing memories with this shoot. We had so much of fun that I cannot tell apart from the time we were shooting and when we were not. There was this one sequence where we all had to jump into Kashi Lake, shooting for that sequence was like having a ball. I had an amazing time, with lovely locations, outdoor shooting, and being in water. There's nothing more we could have asked for. Tell us something about the story and your role in Ru Ba Ru. Ru Ba Ru is about living in a relationship. Over a period, say about 2 years into any relationship, people start taking each other for granted. The film is about these two people. And how you tend to get jaded and caught up with everyday of life and you ignore the little things of life that make you happy including the person that you are involved with. We forget to express our appreciation for that person or love for that person all that in someway hampers relationships in the long run. It is about that one day when you realize the importance of people in your life is seldom known when they are lost. How would you rate Randeep Hooda as an actor? I think he is very fine actor and, he has amazing skills and is very knowledgeable about it. Randeep helped me a lot with my work and especially since this was my first film as a lead. He was very helpful not only with scenes between us but throughout the entire film. He guided me with my speech, intonation, and modulation. And I really think that he will be very successful. Ru Ba Ru will showcase another side to Randeep's personality; you will see a much lighter side of him. Ru Ba Ru will showcase another side to Randeep's personality; you will see a much lighter side of him Arjun Bali is a debutant director. How was he in comparison to your previous directors? I think all the directors I have worked with are pretty much debutants except for Abhishek Kapoor and Sudhir Mishra. Had I felt that they were not good at their job then I would not have worked with them in the first place but luckily, I never felt that with any one of them. Arjun knew what he wanted because we did a lot of discussions and rehearsals before the actual shoot, so I never felt like anything like that. In addition to that, he has been an ad filmmaker all his life so he was definitely in touch with the medium completely. It always felt like working with any other experienced director.

Book Review: Ten Years with Guru Dutt - Abrar Alvi's Journey

Reading Sathya Saran written 'Ten Years with Guru Dutt' leaves one with mixed emotions. On one hand, this simple read about filmmaker Abrar Alvi's association with legendary Guru Dutt makes for an interesting read due to some simple writing which is almost like flipping pages of a dramatic novel. However, on other hand, one almost ends up wondering if whatever written in this 200 page book is indeed true. That's because it almost seems to be a propaganda in motion, what with chapter after chapter trying extra hard to establish two factors - a) Abrar's closeness to Guru Dutt and b) Abrar 'really' being the director of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and not Guru Dutt, as has been widely speculated even though the film was made almost 50 years back. These are the two factors, which though form the USP of the book, almost end up annoying a reader since page after page, there is an attempt to establish and re-establish this fact (or perhaps fiction)! Also, the book appears to be quite skewed in it's portrayal of Abrar Alvi and his relationship with his mentor, Guru Dutt. 'Guru Dutt trusted me', 'Guru Dutt listened to me', 'People around us knew how close I was to Guru Gutt' - statements like these make an appearance at regular intervals which leads one to the conclusion that the book is perhaps more about what Abrar Alvi 'thought' of Guru Dutt than what the legendary filmmaker actually was. One also pities the fact that beyond the spoken words by Abrar and the printed chapters by Sathya Saran, there is absolutely no record of what had actually transpired 50 years back. Agreed that this exactly is the case for majority of biographies and autobiographies but in case of this book, one does take it all with a pinch of salt since beyond Sathya and Abrar, who get into a conversation with each other, hence leading to the elaborate detailing, there is not a single name mentioned or interviewed who could validate or confirm any of the claims. To be fair to Abrar Alvi, there is a good probability that the filmmaker actually shared a relationship of comfort with Guru Dutt, as he states time and again while giving an account of his ten years association with the maker of films like Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool and Chaudhvin Ka Chand amongst others. There are quite a few interesting incidents highlighted in the book and the most anticipated of all i.e. his love affair with Waheeda Rahman, is stated in good detail. One gets to know that though Guru Dutt hadn't quite warmed up to Waheeda Rehman in his first few meets with her, it was only gradually that he started falling for her. So much so that his marriage with Geeta Gutt too was threatened to a great degree that resulted in him spurning Waheeda once for an all. Though the story isn't quite the one that has been untold, it is the detailing which goes in the book along with innumerous sequence of events that eventually led to a heart break which makes one flip over the pages with urgency. One such interesting chapter revolves around how Guru Dutt was almost getting converted into a Muslim so that he could get married to Waheeda Rehman! Apart from the story revolving around Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rehman, what also interests a reader most is the sequence of events which led to Pyaasa and the subsequent filming of the masterpiece as it turned out to be. As admitted by Abrar himself, he was involved with a prostitute named Gulabo. Spending time with her on a regular basis got him close to her and soon he started studying her mannerisms, her background and how she behaved in a particular way. Though she got emotionally attached to him as well, Abrar found himself distancing from her over a period of time. Eventually, their relationship came to a tragic end with Gulabo meeting with an untimely death. However, it left a strong impression in the mind of Abrar that resulted in the birth of Pyaasa. In fact there are a couple of other anecdotes attached to Pyaasa as well. Apparently, Guru Dutt and Abrar Alvi even made a round of 'kothas' to get a 'feel' of the ambience while working on a subject which had a streetwalker as one of the important protagonists in the film. Also, even though Guru Dutt went on to play the main lead in Pyaasa, he was apparently not happy with his own work after shooting for a few reels and decided to approach Dilip Kumar to replace him. The book gives an extensive account of how Dilip Kumar was highly impressed with the plot but still didn't go on to play the lead due to a fall-out that stemmed from clash of ego. While the book primarily revolves around the relationship shared between Abrar and Dutt (though strictly from Abrar's point of view), there are a few other big names who find a mention as well. Johnny Walker being an almost permanent name in Guru Dutt's films, Mehmood finding a big break in the banner, love-hate relationship shared between Raj Khosla and Abrar Alvi (both being assistants to Guru Dutt), S.D. Burman's inherent trait of being a miser, Meena Kumari's dreadful tale of being beaten up by her possessive husband Kamal Amrohi - all of this finds quite some prominent mention in this book which takes a journey down the memory lane. As stated earlier, if one leaves the points around over-emphasizing of Abrar's relationship with Guru Dutt aside and treats this book as a work of fiction mainly for entertainment purpose, it makes for an interesting read. Sathya Saran's writing is simple as well as it alternates between first person (from Abrar's point of view) and her own account of events that unfolded decades back. A unique experience. And one must credit the author for this who spices up the proceedings at regular intervals to get the right ingredients of love, drama, thrills, sensuality, confrontation, back stabbing, hatred, professional fall-outs and behind the scenes functioning of Hindi cinema in place. Price: Rs. 499/= Rating: ***

Madhur to donate National Award prize money to farmers

Madhur Bhandarkar is not unaware about the plight of farmers, especially in Maharashtra, who have been committing suicide over the years due to their inability to pay back loans. Touched by innumerous such instances which have been making headlines over the years, he has decided to do his bit for this cause. He would be donating Rs. 2.5 lakhs which he would receive along with his National Award as a Best Director for Traffic Signal this week. "Yes, what you have heard it right", confirms Madhur Bhandarkar who would be visiting New Delhi early this week to be felicitated by the President of India in the National Awards ceremony. "I am aware about the problems being faced by the farmers and the way they have suffered for all these years. I had always wished to do my own bit for this and since this is a noble cause, I decided to donate the prize money to three such families", says Madhur. The money would be distributed amongst three ladies namely Kamal Waghmare, Sangeeta Prakash Darne and Sugandha Kannake. Each of them has a sorrowful tale to tell. Kamal Waghmare is the wife of Late Kashinath Dagdu who committed suicide on 1st of March even after the loan waiver was announced in the general budget. He had a loan of Rs. 10000 and now his wife along with children live in acute poverty in Buldhana. Belonging to Yavatmal, Sangeeta Prakash Darne is the wife of Prakash Darne who committed suicide on 28th June last year. He had a loan of Rs. 56000 and has now left behind two daughters (one of them being visually impaired) and a son. Sugandha Kannake, again belonging to Yavatmal, is the wife of Shamrao Kannake who committed suicide on 17th Feb 2007. With a loan of Rs. 16200 on him, he committed suicide on the same day as his father. "These stories deeply touched me", says Madhur in a soft tone, "Farmers have suffered so much and what I am doing is just a small gesture from me. Though none of the three women are currently aware that they would be receiving this money, I would be personally going to Nagpur on 5th September to hand it over to them".

"The term 'Rockstar' is used to derive an attitude" - Purab Kohli

His smile is something that immediately makes him the most likeable boy in tinsel town. He captured the hearts of the women folks and also the men (no pun intended) with his impeccable and down-to-earth VJ-ing and acting skills. He is none other than Purab Kohli, one of the most prominent faces on TV and now in films too. If his well-etched role in Onir's My Brother Nikhil got him accolades by a ton, then, wait for a whirlpool of compliments in the recently released film Rock On. Bollywood Hungama caught up with the man who is now being referred as 'Killer Drummer', thanks to his character in Rock On. Over to you Purab! To start with, are you even aware that girls have forgotten as when they smiled the last time considering the fact that you had vanished away from the scene? Why the long hiatus? What was keeping you busy and occupied? Ha ha ha…I am sure that people have many reasons to smile beyond me, though I'm glad that I can manage a few. I quit Channel (V) last year, so I have been off air for a while. I have been focusing on the film work that's coming my way. And topping the list is Rock On, a film that has become the toast of the nation! I couldn't have asked for more! I quit Channel (V) last year, so I have been off air for a while What was the basic reason that made you sign Rock On? I heard that Abhishek Kapoor (Gattu) was casting for Rock On. Hence, I called him for an audition. He, then, auditioned me and then, called me two days later and re-auditioned. I guess that he was not too sure the first time around. To be very honest, I instantly fell in love with the film's storyline, its music and of course my character! Let me also confess that the actor in me could not refuse such a 'once-in-a-lifetime' kind of role! As far me being a 'Rock Star' at heart is concerned, I think that the term 'Rock Star' is used more to derive an attitude as compared to its literal meaning. In that sense, I think all of us are Rock Stars and that we also do have our 'Rock Star' moments! I think all of us are Rock Stars and we also have our 'Rock Star' moments The concept of promoting the film through the medium of organizing rock concerts was really cool. It also must have set your adrenaline levels very high? Yeah Man! Being on stage in front of a huge audience is quite an exhilarating experience in itself. When we were shooting the concert sequences in the film, it was so true to life. And in order to avoid any cuts, we started shooting as early as 5am! We shot the songs totally from start to finish and every time it played, not just the crowd but also we (the crew and actors) used to forget that we are at 'work'! We used to enjoy every show as a real-life concert in itself and trust me… that clearly shows in the film! The concerts were surely the high points and it definitely set our adrenaline to an all-time high! Rock On's promotional concerts were surely set our adrenaline to an all-time high! Do you feel that in a country like India where the rock scene is still in its nascent stage, a movie like Rock On will act as the much-needed agent of change? I hope it does. It's more than just the mere obvious fact that Bollywood has not just a big, but a hugely massive influence in our country and its people! And with Rock On, I do hope and feel that this should kick-start a new something in terms of everything pertaining to music, especially Rock. The look of all the characters in the film is really something to talk about! What all went in the preparation of your look and the character? You also sport a beard. There was a 'look test' before we started shooting. An excellent team of extremely hard working people were put together by Excel Entertainment. The 'beard' was something that Abhishek had come up with and the moment we saw it, we were simply game for it! It used to take 20 minutes and a whole of 3 people to get it on and plant it. But, at the end of the day, it really looks like the end result was really worth the time and effort! You are one helluva' guy who has been equally successful in TV and films. How do you differentiate one medium from the other? Working in both the mediums have more or less been the same. On TV, one sees you in the frame of 32 inches, whereas in films the same person gets to see you in 70mm! (laughs). The person who sees me in 32 inches on TV gets to see in 70mm in cinema! Now that you have quit Channel (V), does it get translated to you bidding adieu to TV forever? Everyone knows the fact that whatever I am today; I totally owe it to TV. But, with due respects to this fabulous medium, I would also like to tell that it will be a 'No' to TV for a while, since, I now want to focus on some film work. Here, I remember Luke Kenny's famous words "Ek frame ka farak hai! " I remember Luke's famous words "Ek frame ka farak hai!" You have always attributed the success of your films and your roles (read 'characters') to your directors… Well, as actors, we look for acceptance and the first one that I need is from my Director. Also, an actor can only build himself on a base that's provided to him in the form of a character by the writer or the director. I try and be as malleable as possible and wait to get moulded. How was it working with Farhan Akhtar, Luke Kenny, Prachi Desai, and Shahana Goswami as your co-stars? I think that the casting of the film is one of the best things about the film. And I am sure that many would simply agree on this. All of us formed such an interesting group in unison! All of us hail from completely different spaces and the whole film was like different people being put together and made to perform. So being on the sets was quite something in itself. And as co-stars, the whole cast and crew of Rock On were, are and will ever remain true Rock Stars! The whole cast and crew of Rock On are true Rock Stars! How identifiable is your character of Rock On with that of your real life? Every character that I play has a little of the real-life me and every character leaves a little in me. So, depending on what I enjoy of the character, I unknowingly pick it up! Do you carry yourself in 'two looks' the way Farhan does? Yes, not just Farhan and me, all of us carry 2 looks. The reason being that the film spans over 10 years and with the looks, even the character goes through some changes. It's the time factor that puts people through change. And you can see that in 'KD' (my character) over ten years. Has your role in Rock On shaped up the exactly the way you wanted it? The role has shaped up more than what I expected to be like. Frankly speaking, I didn't expect the character of KD to come out so much. The viewers would really love him when they see the film. I always like to view myself (on the big screen) as a layman and my character as one of the characters in the film, and not me playing it. Was there any reference point for your character in Rock On? I did watch a few drummers performing but I didn't really base KD on anyone. If you were to describe KD in one word, what will that be? I really cannot describe KD in one word. Still, if I had to describe him, then, I would say that he is someone who was happy before 10 years, and someone who is finding happiness ten years ahead. Can you recall any of the memorable moments during the shoot of the film? It has to be the scene that we had shot in Karjat. The scene required all of us to jump in to the lake. It was such a lovely feeling, just lovely. We just kept jumping in the water all day long, feeling like a 15 year old kid all over again! The music of Rock On has taken to the masses like a fish to water. So, which song do you repeatedly play on your I-pod? I keep changing my favourite every week. But, overall, I think, its 'Sinbad The Sailor' that does it for me. Talking about the film's music, one does notice that its music is definitely something that is very unlike any typical Bollywood film. What's your take on the evolvement of the film's music? Bollywood has surely witnessed a rock influence in the past, but I think it's been in Pakistani- Sufi space. In that way, I would surely say that Rock On is the first album with a western influence. The trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is just fantastic and mind blowing to say the least. Farhan and Prachi have sung songs in the film. What about you? Well, if you see the film, you'll surely realize that I've sung too. If you see the film, you'll surely realize that I've sung too. A news article recently reported that your Rock On's co-star Koel Poorie pinched your butts. Is it true? Slapped was more like it! (laughs) How was it working with Luke Kenny? Since both of you trace your roots to Channel (V) and a film too, it surely must have been nostalgia time … I've not known Luke merely as a VJ. For me, he's always been the brains behind Channel (V)'s programming. He had even directed me in a film 3-4 yrs ago (13th Floor). Overall, it was really wonderful to have him on the film as a co-star. Don't you feel that for girls, it's the Miss India pageants while for the guys it's VJ-ing that forms as easiest way to get into Bollywood, (with the latest one being Neil Bhoopalan). What say? I don't think you can really put it down that way. Mahima (Chaudhary) used to be a VJ, and then, John happens to be a Gladrags winner! So it's really contradicting the question itself. The fact remains that many of us try and cross over. And one just can't really put a tag to it. Which are the real-life rock bands that you look up to? Well, I am not really aiming to be a musician. So, I don't look up to any band or musicians. But, I do enjoy music and some of my favourite bands are U2, Radiohead and Indian Ocean. I've also been enjoying Shair and Funk! I was introduced to them and Radiohead through the making Rock On and you can even see them performing in the final concert. What are your forthcoming projects? I have a really good film called Rectangular Love Story coming up, that's directed by the very talented Rajat Kapoor. As for the rest, I will 'unveil' as and when the time is right! Till then, Live Your Dream and yes…Rock On!
