So real and bleak is the world of espionage created by writer-director Mani Shankar, so littered with carnage and catastrophe, that you wonder if the sheer sexiness of being a spy that we saw Dharmendra and Tom Cruise experience in Aankhen and Mission Impossible was a cinematic hoax created to hoodwink us into believing in the heroic hi-jinks of people who risk their lives for the sake of national security. Mukhbiir creates a universe of continual searching and annihilation, where heroes are made and unmade with the passage of one bullet from gun to temple, and God help the temple! The young protagonist Kailash (Sammir Dattani) in Mani Shankar's film is painfully young vulnerable and so brutally thrown from one ruthless organization to another (legitimate or otherwise) that at the end of his anguished journey in search of a self identity we want him to be liberated of the pain that seems to be his only constant companion. The characters come and go in episodic eruptions. Silence is Kailash's final ally. What Mukhbiir does to the spy genre is to turn it inside out. We aren't looking at James Bond's stirred-and-sexy world of the spy who loved the good life. Mukhbiir takes us into the murkiest depths of the espionage business where survival isn't a craving. It's a fugitive option offered to a few lucky ones. Luckily, for the gripping and gritty script, the protagonist is a boy-man constantly thrown into situations of severe uncertainty and terror. The tension never slackens. The reluctant young spy survives by sheer instinct and guts. The screen time is segregated into various episodes from Kailash's life as a government informer in action. Luckily, the shoot-outs, somewhat amateurish in their chaotic eruptions, do not define the protagonist's life as much the human contact. Every encounter written for Sammir Dattani's character creates a new level of existential summit in his doomed life until we come to the finale where on Kailash's life (and death) hinges the survival of a city. The play of the personal and inter-personal is not quite as 'epic' on screen as it would appear in the writing. The director fills up the awkward ill-defined spaces in the narrative with pockets of humor and bridled drama all signifying the dynamics of an individual life's relationship with a troubled and violent society. The final dialogue on Islam and violence between Rahul Dev (sinister and frightening in his stoic acceptance of violence as a way of life) lingers after the film. Mani Shankar's storytelling is highly original. There're no false moments in the discursive yet clenched drama of dissociation where Kailash becomes so distanced from his original identity that he eventually forgets who he is. The impressionable automaton's life is mapped out in ruthless detail. The powerful script lets us know there's no mercy for the weak in this grim and unsettled world of espionage and extremism. The two fatally- compatible worlds meet in strange eerie places where Kailash's masquerade as a man removed from his natural roots is so complete you wonder if he can ever go back to a 'normal' life. Though chronicling the protagonist's life in a macrocosmic world of intrigue secrecy and death , Mukhbiir cleverly and sensibly draws conclusions on the quality of protagonist's life through the people whom he meets and bonds with. Immense warmth and empathy are created in Kailash's interactions with people like his mentor Om Puri who first tutors Kailash into being a mean machine and then lets the poor boy loose in a world where death is the only certainty. Various other characters who come in and out of Kailash's life are played with wonderful warmth and/or wickedness by Alok Nath (outstanding as the benign retired gangster), Sunil Shetty (on a paternal mission to teach Kailash the ways of the underworld), Raj Zutsi (at-home doing the lovable anti-social rogue's part) and Sushant Singh (steel-edged and menacing as the evil gangster with heart of 'coal'). There's also a bit of diverting romance in Kailash's life when the pretty Raima Sen shows up for a while and departs, leaving the desolate protagonist to his own devices. But it's the mentor-turned-tormentor Om Puri's relationship with the boy-man-misinformed-informer that holds the plot together providing it with a sensitive center and a restless almost neurotic outer fringes that appear in jagged motions as speed breakers and spoilers in Kailash's life. The sequence where the Mukhbiir must watch his mentor being tortured and then kill him with his own hands without giving the game away is devastating in its intensity and impact. The writing sometimes outdistances the treatment. But what the heck! Who said cinema would have all the solutions on the platter? Mani Shankar's narration provides the hero's journey from disembodied salvation to abject doom and near-damnation with an energetic reined-in adrenaline that flows across the narrative's veins in restrained motions. There is no extravagance in the narration. The plot moves stealthily and surely through a sanguinary labyrinth creating a world of disharmony and strife. What you go away with is the protagonist's pain heartbreak vulnerability and an untraceable reserve of inner strength that he uses to survive in a constantly treacherous world. Sammir Dattani portrays the frail kingdom of the vulnerable and the vanquished with an instinctive confidence. He instinctively embraces his character's weaknesses and aligns them to his own strengths as an actor. The synthesis is potent and poignant. Whether Sammir holds his character's troubled world together or it's the ingrained law of justice in an environment of unnerving doom that keeps the character from falling apart, we finally cannot say. The doom and the doomed eventually merge into one, in Mukhbiir.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 29 Aug 2008 | 11:01 am C Kkompany: An ad for Ekta Kapoor - Rediff

Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 29 Aug 2008 | 10:45 am Anees Bazmee offered 51 crores to direct 3 filmsSuper success of Singh Is Kinng has certainly raised the bar higher up for Bollywood. Till about a couple of years back, Rs. 50 crores final total for a film meant that champagne bottles were ready to be corked. However, now with movies like Om Shanti Om and Singh Is Kinng topping Rs. 40 crores in the first week itself, Rs. 50 crores final total is passé. In the times when Rs. 100 crores for a movie is seen to be pretty achievable within next six months itself, what with biggies like Chandni Chowk To China, Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi arriving soon at the box office, the pay package of everyone out there in Bollywood has seen an exponential increase. This is why it is not just the top actors who see their remuneration in excess of Rs. 10 crores; even top directors too are commanding a huge price. One such filmmaker is writer-director Anees Bazmee who, post the hat trick of success of No Entry, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng, has been offered, hold your breath, as much as Rs. 51 crores by a top corporate house for a bouquet of 3 films. Confirms a source close to Anees Bazmee, "Anees bhai is keeping tight lipped about the entire offer since he would rather sign on the dotted line before making any declaration of sorts. However, the fact is that the day Singh Is Kinng was released and declared a success on the basis of sheer opening; he has been inundated with offers by one and all. So many producers out there just want him to take up their projects and are not even worried about the figure he may quote. However, one such offer that seems to be in serious contention has come from a top corporate house." Refusing to divulge on the name, the source only informs that it is a leading corporate house which has delivered a string of successful films in last six months. "Not just that Anees bhai has been offered 51 crores to direct three films and given full freedom to pick subjects and actors of his choice over a period of time, he has also been extended flat 21 crores as a signing amount. It is an unheard of money and quite unprecedented. Something of this scale has never happened before for a Bollywood director but Anees bhai's track record has forced producers to talk big money", informs the source. Is the number indeed true? Is Anees going to bite the bait? Says Anees Bazmee in a cautious tone, "It won't be fair on my part to comment on the number part since it is best left to be announced by the people who are making an offer. In any case, temptations like these aren't new to me because ever since No Entry became a superhit, mega bucks have been offered to me. I don't want to rush up on my films and go for quantity while compromising on the quality. Yes, there have been huge offers after Singh Is Kinng as well and I am certainly considering a few of them. However, the moment I sign on the dotted line, there would be a formal announcement for all to know."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 29 Aug 2008 | 10:33 am Meet the comic relief of Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekkh Mudh Mudh KeThe name Shakeel Khan may not quite ring a bell. However, one look at the repertoire of his films ranging from Don - The Chase Begins Again to Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal to Ahista Ahista to Lakshya and one tends to recollect the face behind the name. And for those who are still wondering about this young actor, he is the same man who enacted the role of a cricketer in Jannat which was loosely based on Shahid Afridi. With a sense of choosing only those projects with prestigious bearings, Shakeel Khan is now mighty excited about his new film Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekkh Mudh Mudh Ke, a film that features Himesh Reshammiya in lead. Apparently, Shakeel gets into a different gear with this film since he provides the sole comic relief in this romantic tale. However, the role is not entirely a cakewalk for him since he is required to play the role of a blind young man. "That's the irony of affairs," says Shakeel in mock humor, "While the world is expected to smile and laugh looking at me and my antics, I would have to act as if I can't see a thing." Talking more about the film and his role, Shakeel says, "After Jannat there has been quite some recognition coming my way. I am just walking up the ladder and it was important that after a film like Jannat, I choose my next project carefully. This is where the debut director duo Sudheer and Seema came up with the subject of Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekkh Mudh Mudh Ke and the moment I realized that I would be required to play the role of a man who has been blind since birth, I was on board." So how exactly does he fit into the film? "The film has a complete family setup, just like you see in Rajshri films like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. There is this huge family around me, which comprises of Farida Jalal, Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri and of course Himesh Reshammiya. Himesh and I are shown to have grown up together as a part of this family," divulges Shakeel. Excited about the role, Shakeel informs that he has worked particularly hard on getting the mannerisms right to suit that of a blind man. "I attended a workshop with blind people so that I get the finer points right. In addition, I am also watching a lot of DVDs to understand how actors in the past have portrayed a blind man. It is a challenging role and I am not going to let it go off so easily."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 29 Aug 2008 | 10:32 am Kate Moss immortalised in gold

Minissha Lamba, who was the only star to be a part of the Sharjah show said, "I am looking forward to be on stage for the shows to be held across Europe and the Middle East." Well, we always knew that together they can create magic, didn't we?Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 28 Aug 2008 | 3:58 pm "The moment Purab walked in for audition, I knew he was the one" - Santosh SivanHe is one of the very few men who have been responsible for giving Bollywood its global identity that it's enjoying today. Every thing that he does and every move that he makes becomes a style in itself. He can also be attributed the task of extracting some of the most superlative performances out of children, without altering on their innocence. After having won hearts and accolades by a ton with his exceptional films like Halo, Asoka and The Terrorist, to name a few, the man is back to stir the emotional innocence of every cine goers' hears with his latest offering Tahaan, a story set against the backdrop Kashmir, God's very own paradise! Bollywood Hungama caught up with this man par excellence for a heart-to-heart interview. Here are the excerpts: First it was Halo and now Tahaan. How does it feel to return back to the children's zone? There's nothing like 'returning' to kids' zone as I have also done a film called Malli in Tamil, which won many awards. Then, there's a Kannada film that I did called Prarambh for AIDS Foundation which had a small kid along with Prabhudeva. I always believe that when a person is looking at change, its better that we show it from a kid's perspective as people tend to understand that better. It's amazing to work with children and it's quite easy to work with children as long as you adjust to their mood swings and you don't dictate too much to them. Let them be what they are. I always try to make the shoots with children a very pleasant experience by making them happy, simply by not being very demanding. I always try to make the shoots with children a very pleasant experience by making them happy, simply by not being very demanding. So, how easy or tough was it to deal with someone like Purab (the child protagonist of Tahaan) whose mere eyes convey an ocean of unspoken emotions? It was very easy and tough at the same time. It was not the easiest thing in the world, at the same time it was not even the toughest thing in the world. I always believe with going with the flow of the children rather than bringing them your way. I believe that they are the most important characters. So it was kind of easy to deal with him. Also there's a notion about the best way to work with children is to pamper them, which I feel is wrong, because with pampering, they tend to sit on top of your head. Hence, I feel that one has to treat them and behave with them very normally. That's primarily because there are lots of other people on the sets to pamper them. Hence, I normally don't get into too much pampering. The children are a very clever lot and spontaneous. They will work their way hard to see that you smile. There's a notion about the best way to work with children is to pamper them, which I feel is wrong Was finding Purav Bhandare to play the role of Tahaan difficult? I wanted someone who could effortlessly speak with eyes, because I feel that if the children start mouthing adults' dialogues, it takes the innocence out of them. It was more of unlearning them. I wanted someone very normal and not someone whom you feel sorry for. I felt that like a kid in Mumbai and a kid in Kashmir go through different kind of childhoods. Hence, I wanted the film to be presented in that manner. And as far as finding Purab is concerned, its all thanks to our casting agent Abhimanyu. We saw several kids and took numerous screen tests. But in the case of Purab, it was simply spontaneous. The moment he walked in, I knew that 'he was the one'. The moment Purab walked in for the audition, I knew that 'he was the one'. What inspired you to make a sensitive film like Tahaan? Sometime back, I had read an article in one of the newspaper cuttings, which was not a pleasant thing to read. That's when I realized that only if something drastic happens gets a mention in the newspapers. But for every drastic thing, there were also so many things that does not happen along with it. That set me of thinking. Since I had earlier made a movie The Terrorist, I did not want to touch upon the topic of terrorism. Also that I liked the whole idea of fable and story telling and then you put them in a place of conflict, something that has a universal appeal as it could happen anywhere. That's how Tahaan was born. We had constant inputs from someone like Anupam Kher, which makes it really very interesting. What went through your mind when you were casting the following characters: Anupam Kher (as Subhan) I have worked with him several times when I was a DoP (Director of Photography) and I always wanted to cast him. He has fantastic potential. I have always seen an upward trend in his career since his brilliant performance in Saaransh and also in Khosla Ka Ghosla. I have also seen him in several foreign films like Bend It Like Beckham etc... I always felt that he is someone with tremendous potential. He is someone with tremendous potential. Sarika (as Haba) Even though I know her personally, this is the first time that I am working with her. I always thought that she was amazing even as a child actress. She delivers any role with effortless ease. Sarika delivers any role with effortless ease. Rahul Bose (as Zafar) He looked the part of someone from a village wanting to look a bit modern. Rahul too was totally charged up because he does not get to play the village idiot kind of roles every second day, because of his sophisticated nature. Victor Banerjee (as Grandfather) He is a fantastic actor and is also someone who looks like a Kashmiri to the core. Also whenever I visualized about someone who could put values into a kid, it was him whom I would think of. He has this pleasant and soothing personality that exudes warmth every time. In the film, he could easily carry it off very well the scenes of him telling the fables of life to the kid. Victor Banerjee has this pleasant and soothing personality that exudes warmth every time Rahul Khanna (as Kuka Saab) He is doing a guest appearance. He resembles the part of someone who is from Kashmir, and has gone abroad, studied there and has come back to continue working as a Moneylender. It's the same business of money lending, but in a different fashion. It must have been really tough to shoot in Kashmir and that too with a donkey. We have not shown Kashmir in a conventional manner. We have shot at a time when the stage is set for the first snow. It's unlike what people have seen of Kashmir so far! And as far as the donkey is concerned, since it belongs to Kashmir itself, it's used to the cold conditions. Since we did not want the animal to do anything unnatural, we did not have a tough time managing it. And since the script required the donkey and the boy to be emotionally tied up, I made Purab take care of the donkey a week before itself by giving it apples etc⦠They became inseparable anyways! And it is this chemistry which translates on screen so beautifully! Since we did not want the donkey to do anything unnatural, we did not have a tough time managing it You have repeated Rahul Bose in Tahaan after Before The Rains? Why? His role in Tahaan was not very defined. Rahul is someone who is able to elaborate on his roles and give some different dimension to the same. Hence, it becomes comfortable to have that with an actor with whom you share a great comfort zone. It's not a big role, but surely a challenging one! The film has been doing rounds of festivals. But how do u think the janta will react to the movie? It is been invited to just about any festival one can ever think of. What do you think of the film? If I were to answer this question as a layman, I would be totally speechless and awestruck! You have just answered my question, my boy! You have just answered my question! If you and I think that it can connect with the multiplex audience very well, then, I am sure that the film has huge potential! I think that the people will surely like it! You are one person who is not new to awards as you have a galore of National awards, Filmfare awards and an array of others in your kitty. So, what's your take on actors (without taking names) banning such awards? Everyone has got their personal choices and reasons to either accept or reject the awards. What really matters is as to why do you like or dislike any award. The irony of the situation is that if you do not have an award, it matters a lot. But after you get one (award), you can say whatever you want! To me, any award acts as recognition of the individual's work. Besides all this, there are some awards that you really treasure the most. In my case, it's my first National Award that I treasure the most. That's because my mother asked me "Son, when are you going to get a National Award?" That time onwards I was so very keen on getting the National Award. But then, by the time I got my eleventh award, she was fed up anyway (laughs). To me, any award acts as recognition of the individual's work. Wasn't Before The Rains previously called as Kerala? Kerala was just the working title. How does it feel when you see Benaf Dadachandjee (the innocent child star of Halo) on TV as a grown up star? It feels really great to see these kids grow up to become actors. What has been the most frustrating experience of his life? It was during the shooting of Tahaan. Firstly, we were waiting for snow to happen. And when it snowed, we had to hurry up with the shoot, because we were told that the roads will get blocked with snow. We managed it all through somehow. What's your next project after this? I am planning a fantasy film. It's still in the planning stages.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 28 Aug 2008 | 3:11 pm Imran, Ranbir are my favourite actors: Bipasha BasuBollywood's dusky beauty Bipasha Basu says that her favourite actors right now are both newcomers - her 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' co-star Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan of 'Jaane Tu.Source: Entertainment News | 28 Aug 2008 | 2:32 pm Ranbir wins hearts with comic turn in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno'MUMBAI (Reuters) - With "Bachna Ae Haseeno" getting off to a good start at the Bollywood box-office, Ranbir Kapoor is glad people are recognising his flair for comedy, a genre of acting he finds "really difficult".Source: Reuters: Bollywood News | 28 Aug 2008 | 2:29 pm Madhavan shoots in an aircraft for Rajkumar Hirani's 3 IdiotsThe first shooting schedule of Vinod Chopra Films next venture 3 Idiots commenced on 26th August 2008 in Mumbai.
