Chloë Sevigny Brings Insouciance to Atlantic City

Photo: Getty Images

A lightning bolt hit Martha Stewart's beach house in East Hampton and fried her sprinkler control panel and stereo system. Spike Lee, unlike Chuck T, thinks Barack Obama is black enough. Brad Pitt shot Angelina and his family at Château Miraval in France for an upcoming cover of W. Former Mets manager Willie Randolph attended a charity benefit with GM Omar Minaya, which might have been a little awkward. Most media gays back Barack Obama, despite Paul Colichman's decision to rip up his check for Obama over his refusal to support same-sex marriage. Rachel McAdams is back together with Ryan Gosling, or at least cuddling with him in Toronto. Chloë Sevigny took a seaplane to Atlantic City with her brother Paul to hang out at the Chelsea.

Katie Holmes takes a chauffeured car to work, despite the photos taken of her which indicate that she might walk to rehearsal for All My Sons. Justin Long made out "hard-core" with Kirsten Dunst while waiting in line for margaritas at an L.A. bar. Rafael Nadal got mad at Menudo for messing up his practice session at the U.S. Open. Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams hung out at a party at the Empire Hotel. Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio is shopping pics of her baby girl to the celeb weeklies. Michael Phelps is on a golf vacation in Portugal. Kim Kardashian cut her ass on a chipped glass table. Cindy Adams is in Denver covering the DNC and pretty much acting like Cindy Adams.

Latest Made-Up Rumors Suggest Cher Will Play Catwoman in Next Batman Movie

Photo-illustration: Everett Bogue; photos: Getty

In case you haven't heard, the newest nonsensical casting rumor concerning the not-yet-announced (and probably not-yet-imagined) sequel to The Dark Knight is that Cher is Christopher Nolan's "first choice" to play Catwoman, whom, according to a poorly sourced report in the Telegraph, Nolan wants to portray as "a vamp in her twilight years." As untrue as this probably all is, wouldn't it be totally awesome?

Sadly, the Telegraph also claims that Johnny Depp has already signed on as the Riddler (which he surely hasn't) and that shooting on the movie (under the completely made-up name The Caped Crusader) will commence in Vancouver early next year, which we'd imagine will be a difficult without a screenplay. The story notes that Cher hasn't acted since she played herself in the Farrelly brothers' crappy 2003 conjoined-twins comedy Stuck on You, but what really probably makes her casting unlikely is the fact that her speaking voice is as deep as Batman's.

Robert Duffy and Marc Jacobs Make the Cutest Pair

Robert Duffy and Marc JacobsPhoto: WireImage

The best thing about the Marc Jacobs profile in the current issue of The New Yorker is not what Marc Jacobs says. Indeed, we've heard him talk about his fondness for collecting contemporary art and working out for, like, a century, in what seems like countless profiles of him that show how hilarious and fabulous and quirky he is. But few profiles do justice to Marc's better half, business partner Robert Duffy. The 53-year-old has been working with Marc since 1984 (a year he has tattooed on his hand), and the way he talks about the designer, the two sound like an old married couple — you can tell Duffy knows Marc better than anyone else knows Marc, and you can totally imagine them hilariously bickering in that loving kind of way. We recommend reading the article in full, but here are some highlights from Ariel Levy's delightful piece:

In their New York office, Robert and Marc work at back-to-back desks.
Duffy hates the setup:

"It's horrible! I'll have all my papers and my notes and my margins and my, you know, audits and my shit on the table and I'll come back and there'll be spinach on my audit. Or he'll take this thing that says 'confidential' and all of a sudden he'll flip it over and start sketching things, and I'm, like, where's that confidential audit that no one's supposed to be touching or looking at? And then I'll find it months later in the design studio."

Jacobs might be so into his process he's oblivious of this:

“The way my mind works is somebody else has got this so down that they don’t make mistakes and their process is so much more linear than mine. I’ll think that, but, at some point, you know what? This is my process and I don’t know how to do it any other way. I’m sure there are people who can’t afford — who don’t have the luxury of being quite as organic as we are.”

Duffy wanted Marc to get healthy after going to rehab so he took him to a doctor and nutritionist.
Duffy saw Marc morph into someone he never wanted to be:

"He always took a certain pride in being an outsider and sort of chubby and nerdy and wearing glasses, having awkward muses and friends and things … People were reacting to him very differently, in a way that I don't think he ever thought he would like. That just led to his fascination with celebrities, and he started watching these reality shows that I've never watched in my life, and then he started dating Jason, the call boy — a self-promoter."

Jacobs morphed because he loved the limelight:

“There is definitely part of me that just loves the idea that I’m the headline —I do get some weird thrill out of that. I’m human. I love attention. Actors don’t go onstage because they don’t want attention. If you show your art, if you show your fashion, that’s also a very human thing, and, in terms of contemporary life and the twenty-first century fascination with personalities, I like that I get out of that fashion-designer box and become, I don’t know, personality box or celebrity box”

Marc has rotating fixations, like fitness.
Duffy:

“Marc becomes enchanted with certain things at certain times.”

Jacobs:
“Everything is beautiful at the gym, everyone looks amazing. You just think it's like one big healthy circus going on there: the bodies are great, people are jolly, and, even when they're complaining about how strenuous it is, there's like, a kind of very good, positive, we're-all-doing-something-good-for-ourselves.”

And contemporary art.
Duffy:

"He was buying art until I was like, 'Marc, stop! You've got to pay your taxes!'"

Levy on Jacobs's home:
[H]is living room [is accented fluffy white life-size sculpture of a sheep (the work of Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne) … From where he was sitting on the sofa, Jacobs could see works of art by Andy Warhol, Fracis Picabia, Georges Braque, John Currin, Elizabeth Peyton, David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Prince.

And his two bull terriers.
Duffy:

"When he wanted to get a dog, it was, like, 'Oh God, we've got to get two, and they've got to be bull terriers, and they've got to be crazy and they have to be brought into the office every day.' … I'm terrified of the day that he decides he wants to start gardening. Because we'll have, like, Central Park in here or something."

Levy writes of her time spent in Marc Jacobs's house:
[The dogs] were upstairs in their crates that night, because, Jacobs said, if they were let out the barking and the chaos would be unending. (As it was there was a lot of barking. Every ten minutes or so, Jacobs would call, “Daisy, it’s O.K.!”) He has selected dogs that require an unusual amount of attention.

LuAnn de Lesseps Gets ‘Real’ Trashy at Friend’s Wedding

LuAnn de Lesseps

"Are you the keymaster?"Photo: Getty Images

Remember when the last season of The Real Housewives of New York City started and you thought that LuAnn de Lesseps was going to be the most classy person on the show, because she wasn't loud, obnoxious, blonde, or fake-breasted? She was a countess, after all. Well, as the show carried on and she kept ditching her children to go to clubs and places like Cakeshop, you realized that she was kind of a loudmouth like the rest of them (and her maid, Rosanna, was the real brains behind the family). And now, "Page Six" tells us that she's also kind of a drunken ho. From the Post, about de Lesseps's antics at a friend's wedding:
LuAnn, who was there with her husband, Alexandre Count de Lessups [sic], seemed overwhelmed with affection for her fellow guests. "She was trying to make out with women and married men," the source said. "A pregnant wife caught her in the act, stormed off and walked home in disgust." Alexandre "tried to make her leave and was seen throwing her to the ground in the parking lot," our spy continued.

OMG! The Countess is that sloppy, old sorority sister that you had to invite to the wedding but you were nervous would get drunk and misbehave. (Those ones always prove you right for dropping them the minute you turn 26.) Apparently LuAnn was so toasty that she wasn't just kissing married men, she was grabbing at their crotches. She also stole the mike and started singing songs during the wedding band's set, thereby interrupting the dancing — the worst marriage party foul of all. Seriously, this is bad. We can't wait for Bravo! to try to re-create the scene, and get one of their reality producers to take a dump in the "Just Married"–mobile and pin it on LuAnn.

New Jersey Puppy Lauded for Heroic Actions

PawleePhoto: NYpost.com

This morning, when we saw the furry face of New Jersey cockapoo Pawlee peering up from our newspaper, we thought it was just another wacky summer animal story written to fill space during the last, er, dog days of summer. But no. We underestimated Pawlee. He is not just a cute puppy with a cocked head and a fuzzly wuzzly head who did something adorable. He is a defender of humans, a protector of freedoms, a striker of fear into the hearts of creatures ten times his size! According to his owner, on Sunday afternoon, Pawlee frightened away a mother bear and two bear cubs who wandered into the backyard of the home where he lives, with naught but the strength of his bark.
The two cubs were so startled by Pawlee's barking, they climbed a tree. The bruins eventually climbed down and followed their mom over a 4-foot fence before scattering into the woods.

The Post asked owner Fran Osiason to explain her puppy's heroic actions. Did he harbor deep convictions against bears? Has he always been so brave? "Sometimes he's a crazy little puppy," Osiason said.

Wait a second. This is one of those wacky animal stories, isn't it? Crap.

Vin Diesel Is Getting ‘Riddick’-ulous

Photo: Getty Images

Double Trouble: Ah, how we love the last week in August, a magical time of year when we publish the hopeful ramblings of actors, musicians, and homeless crazy people in lieu of actual news. So timing couldn't be better for Vin Diesel to tell MTV that "he now thinks there will be two" additional sequels to The Somewhat Moronic Chronicles of Riddick (full title). Why, Vin, why!? Because apparently all these sequels will comment on Pitch Black "in the same way that Lord of the Rings answered The Hobbit," says Diesel, deftly equivocating Tolkien's fantasy classic with a movie whose IMDb keywords include "One Man Army, Box Office Flop, Action Hero, No Ending." [MTV]

Cher's Meow Mix: Oscar winner Cher may trace the paw prints of Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie, The Caped Crusader, joining Johnny Depp (The Riddler) and Christian Bale (Raspy-Voice Batman). According to a WB studio exec, Nolan wants to "portray her like a vamp in her twilight years," which, please Lord, means Catwoman will say she's getting too old for this catshit. Or they may have made all this up. [Telegraph]

Harrelson's Goin' to Zombieland: Peer pressure's finally gotten the best of our friend Woody Harrelson, as he joins one of like twenty zombie movies coming out next year, Columbia's Zombieland. Story, by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (The Joe Schmo Show), revolves around a "mismatched pair of survivors who find friendship and redemption in a world overrun by zombies." Unless it's actually set at Disneyland with zombie Disney characters, this one might have trouble finding an audience in 2009's overcrowded zombie-movie marketplace. [HR]

Rothwell Scales Mountain: Jayson Rothwell will write The Mountain for Legendary Pictures, a thriller about a new sheriff from the inner city who assembles a search and rescue to look for missing hikers, only to find "the menacing side of the remote wilderness." It's good to see someone's finally cracked the "Reverse Judgment Night" movie. [Variety]

Grease Gets Idol: American Idol's Ace Young (season five) will take over the role of Kenickie in Grease at the Brooks Atkinson Theater, starting September 9. The poor kid must be nervous since, after all, the last time he slicked back his hair and sang, he got voted off American Idol. [Playbill]

Barack Obama Weak Link in DNC TV Coverage

Photo: Getty Images

If you evaluate the Democratic convention as pure spectacle, five things happened on Monday to make its first evening a pretty big success.   First, the networks didn’t bother to broadcast the proceedings until 10 p.m. There may be other nights to come where one hour of coverage will seem insufficient. But in this case, a parade of hacks was kept off camera, including Franklin Roosevelt’s grandson, two leaders of teachers’ unions, and the Chicago city clerk. Also, voters might have been turned off by the way Jimmy Carter was hustled on and off stage (which happened around 8:30) if anyone beyond the C-SPAN audience had been able to see it.

Second, the Democrats installed a huge 103-inch, high-definition TelePrompTer directly in front of their podium, allowing speakers to talk directly to TV cameras while reading their remarks.

Third, Ted Kennedy made it to Denver. His aides told TV producers he would talk for four minutes, but he held the stage for twice that long, with only his thinning hair and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg’s wistful eyes betraying any hint of his brain cancer. (Honestly, Kennedy gave a far more commanding performance than the stumbling effort he delivered in Boston in 2004.) The optics couldn’t have been better for the Obamacrats: the liberal lion summoning a last roar, the Kennedy who has grown old passing the torch to the leader of a new generation. Kennedy filled the arena with genuine emotion, had the TV anchors tripping over themselves to praise him, and basically rendered the first night of the convention immune to Republican criticism.

On a related note, Kennedy’s appearance, which took place around 9:40, forced the networks to cover what had just happened when they came on air at ten. That meant they missed much of Jim Leach, a boring, Republican, out-of-office congressman who had no business landing a prime-time speaking slot.

Fourth, Michelle Obama played Tammi Terrell to the hilt. In their élan and their obvious affection for each other, Barack and Michelle recall Marvin and Tammi. And the Obamas’ call for an inspirational can-do liberalism echoes Democratic politics from the era of Motown, JFK, and Mad Men, just before the cultural and political breakdowns Barack Obama has campaigned on moving beyond. If Barack and Michelle can highlight the early-sixties vibe of their appeal, they’ll be a mainstream hit, which is why right-wingers are so eager to brand them as late-sixties-style radicals instead. Last night, Michelle launched that reintroduction. She related warm stories about her family, and her delivery was intense but graceful. And she wore a mint-green dress that bared her clavicle but not her knees.

Finally, Sasha Obama grabbed the mike. After Michelle’s speech, when Barack Obama popped up on a giant video screen to say hello to his family and the crowd, two awful things almost happened. Obama nearly undid the good vibes his wife had just generated by droning on, too cloyingly and slightly out of sync, about the people he was sitting with, when 7-year-old Sasha yelled, “Hi, Girardo family!” Obama also botched the name of the place he was in, saying “St. Louis” instead of “Kansas City,” but when Sasha asked, “What city are you in, Daddy?” he corrected himself.

After that, the Obamas left the stage. His charming daughter had saved Barack’s bacon, and they knew to quit while they were ahead.

Will Games boost NBC's fall bows?

Front Page: Tracking shows only slight jump in awareness -- Did Phelps and Bolt benefit "Kath & Kim"? The Beijing Olympics attracted more than 211 million viewers during its two-week run, making it the most-viewed event in TV history -- and thus a great place, in theory, for NBC to promote its fall wares.

Guess Who Michelle Obama’s Wearing at the DNC Tonight?

Michelle ObamaPhoto: Getty Images

If you're not pumped for the Democratic National Convention, which starts in mere minutes, then shame on you. Fashion people, us most certainly included, are positively giddy. Indeed, the kind folks at WWD are so excited, they just sent out a news flash to inform us tonight's lady of the hour, Michelle Obama, will remain "loyal to her favorite hometown designer, Maria Pinto, for her prime-time speech at the Democratic National Convention tonight." She's already worn Pinto many times on the campaign trail. WWD reports:
Pinto said the dress Obama is planning to wear is a turquoise blue, three-quarter-sleeve sheath-like, fitted, Fifties-inspired style in double-faced wool. But, as like any woman, Obama could change her mind at the last minute.

Yes, we women are just so fickle, aren't we? Now then, we'd go watch the DNC, but we need to try on at least five outfits first.

Denver Dispatch: Barry Levinson Sees Massive Conspiracy Against Celebs

Just a regular guy.Photo: Getty Images

Was Obama the victim of McCain's "celebrity" attack ad, or was it really Paris Hilton? It's possible that Barry Levinson, director of Wag the Dog, Bugsy, and the upcoming What Just Happened (with Robert De Niro and Bruce Willis), thinks our beloved gossip staple might have been the one thrown under the bus. Levinson, who's at the convention filming a documentary about celebs stumping for arts education with the Creative Coalition, says that for the past eight years, Karl Rove and his acolytes have mounted a systematic campaign to undermine celebrities’ influence in politics and, indeed, to discredit them as even being capable of independent thought. “The past eight years has created this thing where if you’re a celebrity you’re an elitist and you have no relevance at all,” Levinson said at a Creative Coalition/National Black Caucus party. “And I find that fascinating. Because it’s been my experience that 90 percent of writers, directors, and actors are basically middle-class people who had talent. The American system allows them to ultimately move up the ladder. They achieve success, which everyone wants. Their families are still middle-class, they’re still connected to them, and they have a sense of America and what it’s like.”

Levinson believes that the problem began when Rove decided he needed to neutralize the Democrats’ decidedly larger following among actors and pretty people. “He said, ‘Look, how do we get them out of the mix? We’ll call them elitist and we’ll make it stick.’” (Clearly, Rove hadn’t thought ahead to the Oprah effect.) “The irony,” says Levinson, “is that if a celebrity is in support of a candidate, there is no specific benefit that they’re going to get from it. It’s not like they’re going to get tax breaks. They’re Democrats!” True that. “Does Ben Affleck benefit personally if the air is cleaner?” Levinson went on. “Let the man say what he feels! The reality is that they are nothing more than concerned citizens. Agree or disagree with them. But to label them an elitist group is a form of very dark propaganda.”

What’s more, Levinson argues, to reject celebrities is really to reject ourselves and our hopes and our dreams. “So what? They made money. Is that a sin? All people make money as they move up. That’s what America has always been about. The immigrant suddenly within two generations is a multimillionaire. Is he now suddenly an elitist and out of touch? You’re still connected to where you came from. [In attacking celebrities we] are almost attacking the very people who aspire to the American Dream, and criticizing them for accomplishing it.”

It's a disappointing and vulgar attack on John McCain, who has devoted his life to the cause of freedom and the fight against tyranny. But, it's not surprising that Barack Obama and his fellow celebrities stick together.

So … celebrities are ridiculous and have no political weight, but it's necessary to respond to a piece of video that plays during a pop concert? (We should also note that this concert also features film segments including the important socioeconomic commentary of one Ms. Britney Jean Spears.)

The best part? After careful consideration, the McCain camp decided that the best outlet to publish their rebuttal would be the Website for Us Weekly, the celebrity magazine.

Denver Dispatch: Ayelet Waldman on Being an Obama Delegate

Photo: Getty Images

For the next few days I will be making periodic dispatches from the floor, the streets, and the bars and restaurants (where most of the action really is) of Denver. I'm an Obama delegate for the State of California, having won a somewhat intense election battle of my own to get here. In my congressional district there were no less than 101 people running for the four delegate (and one alternate) spots. The election took place over the course of a blazing-hot afternoon — some 900 people lining up to cast their votes for the friends and family members who had begged, pleaded, and corralled them into wasting their Sunday. I attribute my resounding victory (no one else even came close) to the fact that my then-6-year-old daughter, a moppet with blond hair, big blue eyes, and a gap-toothed smile, walked up and down the line holding a hand-lettered sign that said "Vote for My Mom" while her older brother distributed chilled cans of soda. All's fair in love and politics.

Today all anyone wants to hear about is the manufactured dissent between Hillary supporters and Obama supporters. Every reporter breathlessly asks what we've heard, how angry the Hillary supporters are. I can hardly claim any unique insight into the mind of the Clinton camp, but let me say that, as a novelist, I know that thousands of people holding hands, waving signs, and cheering a united party does not a story make. Conflict makes a story, so every nutjob with a PUMA sign gets on TV. The truth from the ground is that while I've heard that the New York delegation breakfast was a little emotional, the vast majority of Hillary supporters are either onboard for Obama or preparing to be. As a young African-American woman I heard interviewed on the bus today said, "Hillary and Bill were there for us, and I'm here for her. But on Thursday, when Barack Obama is our candidate, I will support him with all my heart." I've seen red buttons that say "Hillary Supports Obama and So Do I" and "Another Hillary Clinton Delegate for Obama," but I've seen no negative swag at all.

Sarah Silverman Would Love to Adopt a Chinese Baby

Photo:WireImage

We were dying to ask about Sarah Silverman's breakup with Jimmy Kimmel when we saw her backstage at Take Note 08, a benefit for MercyCorps at the Tuscan Villa in Water Mill. We'd make light of it, we decided as she approached, but what … how … and then she was in front of us. "So … are you fucking Matt Damon now?" we blurted. We knew immediately that it was the wrong thing to say. Thankfully, she understood. "That question is highly overrated in your mind," she said, not unkindly. "I’m sorry. That was so long ago!" We mumbled an apology and then awkwardly persisted. Was she dating? "Nooooo! Come on — the body’s still warm!" Well, we shrugged, we had to ask … "Awwww," she said comfortingly. "You have to try. And at least you’re pretty!" Aw! Sarah Silverman is so charitable. Really!

"I see those CARE commercials on television with the starving children with the big bellies, and these are 1- and 2-year-old babies, nine months pregnant," she later said to the audience. "It breaks my heart. I don’t give them money, though, because I don’t want them to spend it on drugs. But I give. Last year, I sent a whole box of DVDs. They sent me a letter thanking me. They said, ‘Thank you,’ and that there were enough DVDs for every member of the village to get one. And that they were delicious."

And even though she's not dating, Silverman is considering having kids. Or procuring them. "I don’t know the technical term, but I don’t want to have vagina babies," she said. "Not for vanity reasons. I understand when people want to have a baby because they want to have a little version of themselves that they can kind of do it right this time or whatever. I don’t have that need, personally. And because I have evil in my genes. I would adopt, definitely something brown. Because otherwise you don’t get credit. Probably China. I’d adopt in China. If I adopted in China, I’d definitely adopt a boy, because somebody told me that the girls there were like, useless." See? She really does love chinks!

Designers Stay Ahead of the Knockoff Curve

You know if you bought a knockoff of this piece
from Chanel's fall collection those rubber things
would fall off as the salesperson folded it
and put it in the bag.Photo: Getty Images

Anyone who’s ever felt the heft of a Chanel suit jacket (or, in our case, stealthily slipped one on while the sales lady wasn’t looking) knows that with the weight of chains, brocade, and beading comes a four-digit price tag. Compare that to the nifty “office-chic” blazer you just scored at Uniqlo — on sale. Actually, don’t.

If fall and winter fashion brings out the bitter shopper in us, it’s not just due to our perpetually bottomed-out bank account. Diaphanous summer fabrics have always been easier to carry off, especially when our stylish friends have often mistaken Zara for Barneys Co-op. Fall ’08 runway looks from Prada, Balenciaga, and Balmain — not that we can afford them! — are all embellishment-heavy and alarmingly pricey.

According to the Financial Times, ready-to-wear designers are continuing to seek ways of distinguishing themselves from the mass-market, fending off knockoffs by using high-tech fabrics and hard-to-duplicate application techniques. And the trend isn’t likely to wane, mirroring a general market shift. “As the price of high fashion and luxury continues to climb, so designers are upping the deluxe factor in every aspect of a garment.” Sigh. Expect next season’s Barneys Warehouse sale to be especially cutthroat.

Donna Karan’s Latest Makeover Project: Trucks

A DKNY fall ad and a City Harvest truck inspired by it.Photo: Courtesy of DKNY

Each Fashion Week Donna Karan lends her city chic aesthetic to a cause far less glamorous than catwalking. Last Fashion Week DKNY chained bright-orange bikes to posts around the city to encourage people to use environmentally friendly transportation. (We, too, have longed to see the day when André Leon Talley pulls up to the shows on one of those vintage bikes with the really big front wheels whilst wearing a top hat and a giant smile.) This Fashion Week DKNY made over another mode of transportation, the trucks of City Harvest, which collect and deliver millions of pounds of food to the neediest folks in the city. The exterior, as you see above, was inspired by her new fall ads. If only all the trucks in this city looked so pretty. But lest you think fashion cares only about the surface, DKNY also teamed up with City Harvest on the Make-A-Wish necklace, which you can buy at DKNY.com. One hundred percent of proceeds go to City Harvest.

Black Lip Gloss Is a Fall Must-Have; Max Factor Biography Hits Shelves

MAKEUP
• Last week we told you about Lancôme's black lip gloss, but turns out Yves Saint Laurent has one too, called Pur Black. While Lancôme's is $40 on preorder, this designer shade is $28. So get goth already, won't you? [Blogdorf Goodman]

• Max Factor died in 1938, but his son Frank changed his name to Max when he took over the company so the transition would be seamless. That's dedication! The rest of Factor's life is told in a new book titled The Man Who Changed the Faces of the World. [NYer via Jezebel]

• In the promo for the Tricia Sawyer line, the model's mascara application is so busted. How is that supposed to sell makeup? Seriously. [Musings of a Beauty Muse]

• British shoppers spend $555.42 a year on health and beauty products. Little things add up. [WWD]

NAILS
• Solange Knowles is giving Rihanna a run for her money in the manicure department. Beyoncé's little sis was spotted with black and white polka-dot fingernails, which we actually kind of liked. Kind of. [Bella Sugar]

• China Glaze's new nail-polish set is called Rodeo Diva and features colors like Midnight Right (an eggplant shade), Rodeo Fanatic (a metallic teal blue similar to M.A.C's Whirlwind), and Cowgirl Up (a berry-violet hue). [All Lacquered Up]

• Turns out Hot Topic's polish shades aren't so bad! You'll like Sugar Plum and Neon Pink, if you're into the super-bright stuff. [Casual Lavish]

Our Favorite Model Cards From the New Show Packages

Modeling agencies have started sending out show packages in hopes of getting their newest girls and runway vets prime placement on as many catwalks as possible for Fashion Week, which starts next week (OMFG is right!). The model cards (or, as we like to think of them, our baseball cards) come with photos and stats (height, hip measurement, etc) for each girl. We poured through piles and picked our five favorite cards.

1. Hye Park, Trump Management

A white outfit on a white background with frizzed-out black hair forces the eye to one place: Hye Park's gorgeous face. Genius, no?Photo: Courtesy of Trump

2. Behati Prinsloo, Supreme

Supreme's fashion-in-the-wild package this year was by far our favorite, so much so that we had to pick two cards from the stack to share with you. First up, Behati Prinsloo, who turns a highway into a runway by hitchhiking in a sheet and Reeboks. Chic and spiritual. Photo: Courtesy of Supreme

3. Hanne Gaby Odiele, Supreme

Continuing the oh-so-literal girls-gone-wild theme, Hanne Gaby Odiele looks like she just jumped out of a river. If only we looked that sexy and fresh after swimming.Photo: Courtesy of Supreme

4. Daul Kim, Elite

Elite went for an eye-catching graphic, retro border on black-and-white photos. Daul Kim's come-hither pose makes us wish we had legs that went on for days. If only.Photo: Courtesy of Elite

5. Angelika Kocheva, Marilyn

Marilyn's cards look strangely angelic, but in a way that makes you do double takes. Seems fitting then that we're drawn to Angelika's card. You try looking away.Photo: Courtesy of Marilyn

Woody Allen Reminds Us How Funny He Is

Courtesy of Weinstein Co.

You know how you feel when you run across one of those old Woody Allen humor pieces from Without Feathers and you reread it and you're like, Holy shit, that guy is funny? That's how we felt this weekend reading Woody's Vicky Cristina Barcelona diaries in "Arts & Leisure." And not only did the faux-diaries actually make us laugh a lot — we liked the line about Woody fracturing "certain key teeth" on the floor — they also cleverly undercut almost every joke we've made about Woody and his work in the last ten years. Casting himself opposite younger women? The enigmatic acting of ScarJo? His box-office woes? It's all there. If he'd just made a joke about marrying his stepdaughter, we'd have nothing else to write about.

Engineered Garments Opens a Country Store at Den

Country Store by Engineered Garments unleashes a sea of rugged plaid in the East Village.Photo: Courtesy of Den

After trying to catch a glimpse of the soon-to-open open boutique Pas de Deux this weekend (no dice), we escaped into the new Country Store by Engineered Garments at Den, a pop-up that opened Saturday. Unlike the sterile, white-on-white décor of the former Common Projects display, EG has decked out the 350-square-foot space in a woodsy Field & Stream motif. Framed pages from dated hunting magazines line the walls, rickety beams are propped overhead, and scattered patchwork pillows and knit blankets add a country vibe. Designed by Daiki Suzuki, the fall/winter collection is inspired by early 1900s workwear and is heavy on wool, Buffalo check, and rugged plaids. Men emerging from the dressing room resembled stylish lumberjacks — a look we didn't find so unappealing in moderation. Highlights include fur-lined vests, selvaged-denim jeans, skinny plaid ties, wool vests, and dark, dapper blazers. Accessories from outside brands complement the wares, like canvas bags from J.W. Hulme and Duluth Pack, and work boots from Whites and Dayton. Check back later this summer for a brand-new women’s collection, FWK by Engineered Garments (named after Katherine Hepburn’s mansion in Fenwick), which will present downsized, tailored versions of the outdoorsy looks. See more of the Country Store after the jump.

The Verdict: "That's one of the things I love best about New York," Julie Christie says in the trailer for the second movie in the anthology series that began with Paris, Je T'Aime. "Everyone came from somewhere else." Including the directors and stars of New York, I Love You! Casting a bunch of non-Parisians in short films directed by, say, Alexander Payne might have worked wonderfully in Paris, but here in New York we're a little pricklier about who tells our stories. What, exactly, do Maggie Q, Rachel Bilson, Shia LaBeouf, and Brett Ratner have to say about this city that a bunch of New York–based actors and directors couldn't have come up with? We guess we're glad that Eli Wallach, Natalie Portman, and Olivia Thirlby are involved, but this trailer's constant, pie-eyed refrain — "New York's not such a big place!" "God, I love New York!" — reminds us painfully of a bunch of tourists wandering around Times Square.

Success of ‘The House Bunny’ a Clear Mandate for Someone to Write a Non-Crappy Movie for Anna Faris

Courtesy of Columbia

On Friday, we asked if over-the-top critical exuberance over her movie-salvaging performance in the not-great The House Bunny could turn Anna Faris into a star. And maybe it can! Bunny was the feel-good box-office story of the weekend, earning a near-budget-recouping $15.1 million and placing second, just behind Tropic Thunder, whose $16.1 million brings its cumulative gross to just $65 million, a good deal short of the movie's $100 million production cost (and the untold billions they spent on offensive viral marketing). Faris also trounced Death Race ($12.3 million) and Rainn Wilson's awful-looking The Rocker, which bowed at No. 12 with a hilarious $2.8 million. If people will pay this much to see her in The House Bunny, just imagine how much they'd pay to see her in a movie that isn't borderline terrible!

Champion of the Knockoff: ‘Gossip Girl’ Stylist Eric Daman

Eric DamanPhoto: WireImage

We're breathlessly counting down to the season premiere of Gossip Girl, which is just one week away. But who better to cash in on its season-two debut than the store Blair, Serena, and Jenny never shut up about, Henri Bendel? The store unveiled its Gossip Girl–themed windows last night before a throng of shrieking tourists, teens, and children who could barely see over the velvet rope. (And those children had some fierce elbows, let us tell you.) Last to bound up the red carpet behind Taylor Momsen, Leighton Meester, et al was the show's stylist, Eric Daman, who also styled the Bendel windows. Daman, who looked fabulous in a white vest with no shirt and thick tangle of necklaces, recalled one time shooting on the Upper East Side when Gossip Girl fanatics showed up on set dressed as their favorite characters. "They are showing up as Serenas and Blairs, in the outfits that they saw in the episode, standing there outside being like, 'Serena, I'm wearing your coat! I'm wearing your coat!' It's brilliant. It's amazing," Daman said. "And these are the girls of the Upper East Side, who have super taste and waltz around getting whatever they want."

But he asserts girls of that demographic — and Brooklyn resident Jenny Humphrey — aren't the only ones with the means to cop Serena van der Woodsen's label-heavy look. "It's accessible," Daman said. "You can get it at Nine West or you can get it at H&M and you can get it at Charlotte Russe, and it's all knockoff. You can get the Ferragamo knockoff bag at the mall and still look brilliant. And you should. I think it's really important that girls know that." So don't go pulling any Jenny-esque five-finger discounts, kids. A faux will get you through just dandy.

‘American Idol’ Adds Fourth Judge, Possibly to Avoid Remaking Mistakes of Recent Past

Photo: Getty Images

In the wake of conspicuously toupeed grunge fanatic David Cook's baffling victory at a recent finale, American Idol has decided to increase its critical component by adding a fourth judge. Joining Randy, Paula, and Simon at the table for the show's upcoming eighth season will be Kara DioGuardi, a songwriter whose credits include hits by Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, and Gwen Stefani. Encouragingly, she's worked with Dr. Dre and Justin Timberlake, making her the show's least lame adjudicator by a mile. Discouragingly, she's also collaborated with Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, which means she probably harbors no innate bias against this season's impending torrent of crappy David Cook sound-alikes.

Willie Mae Rock Camp Showcase Portends Big Things for Little Girls

The Minor Outrageous Tigers.Photo: Tracy Morford

“Hi, we're famous,” announced one of the performers addressing the line outside of the Music Hall of Williamsburg at Saturday's Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls 2008 Showcase. “This is going to be awesome.” Having an act inform you of their fame is an ill portent at any show, but the awesomeness promised by the young lady was triumphantly delivered. There was shredding. There was head banging. And yes, there were drum solos. There were also braces, leg warmers, ponytails, and several mike stands standing at about three feet high. The early-afternoon showcase was the culmination of Willie Mae's intensive weeklong seminar in rockin' out. Emceed by the irrepressible, travel-size Cassidy Van Cooten (with only a little help from a staff member), the event displayed the talents of seventeen bands, most with rather innovative lineups.

The kids not only pulled off their accessories — sleeveless band tees, neckties, and fingerless gloves, all things better worn by kids dressing up as adults, and not the other way around — but their set was full of surprises. The high points: the Explosive Diamonds' guitar player effectively wrestling a Gretsch Chet Atkins bigger than she was, a chilling a cappella breakdown courtesy of the Nothingness, and Fairy Sandwich's four-fisted high-hat clang. The catchiest song was Girlz Like Boyz' party protest rant “Good-bye Mr. President,” which recalled for us the bratty, adolescent beat of L'Trimm. (The band stopped short of formally endorsing Obama, but their jam has “Raising McCain” soundly beat.) Common to many of the groups seemed to be the influence of the Shaggs, Hole, and … um, Thurston Moore and his tuneless drones … er, maybe something Indian? We've seen worse from Pratt students in bands. And aspiring indie rockers of all ages would do well to learn that when a live performance doesn't exactly jell, just smile big, throw candy, and raise those devil horns high.

Alessandra Ambrosio Has a Girl!

pregnancy.Photo: Getty Images

In baby/bump-watch news we actually care about, Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio gave birth to a baby girl last night in her native Brazil. Joy! The father of the little Anja Louise Ambrosio is Alessandra's boyfriend, businessman Jamie Mazur, who she's been dating since 2005. They're kind of disgustingly cute together, right? Right. The 27-year-old supermodel continued modeling during her pregnancy (this was her first), but lest the world forget how super she is, she will walk in the Victoria's Fashion show in November. Heidi Klum's not the only one who can do stuff like that. (And yes, photos for the baby are up for grabs, but the proceeds go to the MS Children's fund.)
