• Consumer interest in Speedo's $550 LZR Racer is at an all-time high now that 92 percent of Olympic gold medalist swimmers, like Michael Phelps, have been seen wearing it. Online preorders have led Speedo to predict it will sell out immediately when it goes on sale next month. [WWD]

Cindy Crawford on Michael Phelps: "I'm friendly with him. We met four years ago when he was just trying out for his first Olympics. And to see how far he's come … He was a kid and now he's just so much more poised and handling the pressure so well." Jealous! [British Vogue]

Ragtag Band of Communal Artists on Makeshift Boats Declare: We Are Not Hippies

Not hippies!Photo: nytimes.com

From the second-to-last paragraph of today's Times story about artist Swoon's cool-looking Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea, an installation of seven boats made from scrap and floating down the Hudson, accompanied by music, theater, and performance from a crew of dozens:

Though the group is adamant that its members are not hippies…

From the last paragraph:
Shortly before setting off the group gathered in a circle. The men, in vests, trousers, beards and derby hats, seemed inspired by members of the Band. The women wore everything from light slips to purple jeans and orange crocs. Swoon thanked them for their help. “I’m a little dumbstruck,” she said. A bottle of Champagne was uncorked, and Swoon ran around the circle dripping it into the mouths of her fellow travelers.

Mario Cuomo Helped Investment Firm Being Probed by Son Andrew

Mario Cuomo Andrew Cuomo

"Dad, you're squeezing too hard. Dad, OW, stop!"Photo: Getty Images

In what would normally be an innocuous introduction, former governor Mario Cuomo recently helped connect lawyer Philip Howard, a representative of investment firm Mezzacappa Management LLC, with an influential adviser to state Controller Thomas DiNapoli. Cuomo was not paid for the introduction, and the advisor himself, Pat Bulgaro, is only working as an unpaid consultant to DiNapoli. But the Daily News raises its eyebrows at the connection because Mezzacappa Management has been under scrutiny by State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for months now. Under former Controller Alan Hevesi's tenure, the state's pension fund had made a $400 million investment with Mezzacappa, a series of deals that the attorney general began to examine after it was revealed that top firm officials had donated over $100,000 to Hevesi's campaign. Hevesi himself resigned in 2006 before pleading guilty to chauffeuring his wife around using state vehicles and employees, and Andrew Cuomo has been looking into the possibility of a pay-for-play scam during his tenure.

It's a complex situation in which nobody yet appears to have done anything wrong, but young Andrew can't be pleased that his father is disregarding his investigations enough to help out a company that's suspected of already getting too much help from Albany politicians. You know, he's doing a really good job these days and people are getting to respect him for who he is, not who his dad was. Can't you just let him shine? For like, one minute, Dad? God.

Breaking: Tyra Banks Accused of Diva-Like Behavior

Photo: Getty Images

Tyra Banks acted like a total diva during the taping of a segment on black models by "giggling, snacking, and chatting with the crew" backstage for two hours while the audience waited for her. John Mayer says his breakup with Jennifer Aniston was because of "different chemistry," but also that she's great. Cassie can't get over Diddy despite the fact that he keeps insisting that they're not exclusively dating.

will.i.am is pissed at Fergie because she won't commit to touring to promote the new Black Eyed Peas album. Germans are probably not going to be fond of Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards given that not a single German character has any redeeming value. Michael Jackson, who may or may not be in a wheelchair, hasn't spoken to his brothers since he was acquitted of child molestation three years ago, though he owes them $840,000 in royalties. Michael Moore doesn't want John Kerry to be Barack Obama's V.P. because Kerry lied to Larry King about not having seen Fahrenheit 9/11. George Clooney, Kanye West, Madonna, and Matt Damon are among those slated to attend the DNC in Denver, while the Republicans have secured country singer Gretchen Wilson. Gavin DeGraw put on an impromptu performance at his downtown bar, National Underground, prompting mass hysterics from the ladies in the crowd. Tina Brown and Dan Rather had lunch at The Park on Tenth Avenue. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi got married. (Both wore Zac Posen.) Barack Obama will soon have another book out. This one is about his plan to change America and is written by his staff. (He contributed the foreword.)

‘National Enquirer,’ Bastion of American Journalism, Is in Decline

Photo: National Enquirer

If the story of National Enquirer's life were a movie, it would be an heroic tale, a thirties black-and-white flick with a soft-focus ending, in which the tabloid — disrespected, abused, scoffed at for much of its life — eventually manages to break through, trump its critics and get the recognition it deserves — only to die of consumption in the third act.

Today the Times' David Carr, like a number of people last week, grudgingly tipped his hat to the "supermarket tabloid" for their reporting on the John Edwards affair. "Yankee ingenuity and shoe leather (no doubt along with some well-placed gratuities to relevant sources) had cracked yet another huge story," he writes. Then he added that it may be their last:

Like any journalism, what the Enquirer does costs money … and that’s in short supply at the headquarters of American Media. The company’s revenue for the quarter ended June 30 was $119 million, down 2 percent. Operating income was off slightly at $26 million and over all, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were down 6 percent. "They don’t have a lot of options,” said one media investment banker who followed the company in the past. “They can walk away, or they can sell assets. There will not be another big refinancing. They are pretty much at the end of the line.”

Aw. See, even though the Enquirer is different from the Times, they are the same. It's kind of like Tropic Thunder, actually. "You're my brother!" [Death.]

New U2 Songs Leaked Directly From Bono’s Stereo

Photo: Getty Images

Over the weekend, four tracks from U2's upcoming album (purportedly titled No Line on the Horizon, allegedly due in November) leaked to the Internet. How, might you ask, did songs from a not-yet-announced record, by a band typically secretive about its new material, find its way on to the Web three months ahead of its release? Apparently a fan passing by Bono's beach house in the south of France last week heard what he recognized as brand-new U2 blaring from the windows. Then, quite naturally, he recorded it and uploaded it to YouTube. (If any of this sounds familiar, it's because the exact same happened two years ago.) How in the heck does Bono expect his neighbors to think about the suffering in Africa if he keeps blasting his music so damn loud? As for the songs themselves, they sound pretty good (minus some ambient splashing noises, which we hope won't be on the album). Hear everything after the jump.

Christian Siriano to Launch ‘Fierce’ Maternity Collection

Christian Siriano's maternity-line sketches.Photo: Courtesy of Moody Mamas

Christian Siriano is launching a maternity collection. And good morning! Though he's showing his regular collection on September 11 during Fashion Week, he's already got a full maternity line under his belt for spring 2009. Siriano teamed up with his two friends Marta Abrams and Elise Rosemarin, founders of Moody Mamas maternity clothes, to create a collection called Fierce for Moody Mamas by Christian Siriano. Really? Fierce? It already has originality written all over it!

A Moody Mamas rep told us he signed on because he thought it would be great for a gay man to team up with two women who've never had a baby to do maternity clothes. Reason enough, we guess! It seems from these sketches of Siriano's designs the threesome has created some interesting pieces for you baby makers. Already we see tummy-flattering garments like a pleated baby-doll dress and a purple wraparound sweater that could easily give A Pea in the Pod a run for its money. The full line goes up for sale on MoodyMamas.com in the spring of 2009, but in the meantime, you can examine a few more sketches after the jump.

We're glad Christian realizes that just because you're preggers doesn't mean you have to ditch your four-inch wedge heels.Photo: Courtesy of Moody Mamas

Where Were You When Michael Phelps Won His Eighth Gold Medal?

Michael Phelps

Photo: AFP

As you already know, just after 11 p.m. on Saturday night, Michael Phelps accomplished a feat no human athlete has ever done before, by winning his eighth Olympic gold medal. After having won the 400 Meter Individual Medley, the 4 x 100 Meter Freestyle Relay, the 200 Meter Freestyle, the 200 Meter Butterfly, the 4 x 200 Meter Freestyle Relay, the 200 Meter Individual Medley, and the 100 Meter Butterfly, he joined the U.S. Team in winning the 4 x 100 Meter Medley Relay. All but one of those victories was also a world record.

So, um, what were you doing that night?

Your Daily Intel editors were scattered across the country, but we all watched Phelps (one even left a wedding reception in Jersey to go to a bar to watch him win), and yes, Chris cried. (Only because Mrs. Phelps was so adorable!) Did you? Anybody have a good story? And, if you didn't watch — dude, what's your excuse?

Simon Pegg Career Update: Superbad's Greg Mottola will direct Paul, the story of two British comic-book geeks in a cross-country U.S. adventure, written by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Because of "insurmountable scheduling conflicts," however, Pegg won't be appearing in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards. That sounds like code for, "I don't want to be in a Mike Myers movie." [MySpace, via ComingSoon]

…On the Other Hand: First of all, David Krumholtz is out. But don't despair, because Freaks and Geeks' Neal Schweiber, or "Samm Levine" if you're into real names, has landed a part among Brad Pitt's merry band of Nazi killers in Inglorious Bastards. We hope he gets to do ventriloquism and quote Bill Murray as much as possible. [Ain't It Cool News]

Two Get Goosebumps: Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander are in negotiations to write the big-screen adaptation of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series. Producer Neal Moritz hinted they'll probably cast kids for the leads and bring in well-known actors for supporting roles like in the Harry Potter movies, and then … a ghostly hand grabbed his neck! [Chapter break] But it was just his sister, Marcy Moritz. [HR]

Relativity, Assemble!: Fox-based New Regency has given Voltron: Defender of the Universe a swift kick in the mechanized lion pants, putting the Japanese TV series adaptation into turnaround. Relativity Media is in negotiations to pick up the reigns on Justin Marks's script, with a more moderate budget using green-screen technology "a la 300," which of course means each lion will have ripped, chiseled abs. [Variety]

Moulin Rouge Redux: Three production companies, one of which belongs to Mos Def, are teaming up to make a movie about the Moulin Rouge, but uh, not like in the movie that already exists. Turns out The Fabulous Moulin Rouge tells the true story of Las Vegas' first desegregated casino, albeit with a fictional main character who rises from mob debt collector to casino manager. Best of all, the movie's to be shot in Dubai, which we guess means in six months they'll have built an entire working replica of Las Vegas out of solid gold. [Variety]

Is Hillary Softening Up — Literally — For the Convention?

Hillary Clinton

Left, Hillary on July 31, and right, on August 8, before and after the Daily News says she got injections.Photo: Getty Images

Rush & Molloy gave New York a little shout-out in today's column, and raised an interesting question: Has Hillary Clinton gone to a doctor to freshen up her face? From the News:
Clinton visited a New York plastic surgeon early this month and received injections of a "dermafiller" in her face. The senator had appeared tired and wrinkly on a June 23 New York mag cover, but when she made her first solo campaign stop beside Barack Obama in Nevada on Aug. 8, she looked refreshed.

To be fair to Hillary, our cover ran just after Hillary dropped out of the race, which was probably the time when she has been most exhausted in her life. Of course she's looking refreshed having recovered from that. But on the flip side, after months of having to stare at her face up close on television and in countless newspapers and magazines, who wouldn't want a little touch-up? (We'd get an entirely new face. Maybe James Franco's? Or Dakota Fanning's!) Above, we've picked photos of Hillary from before (right) and after (left) the News claims that she got filled out. She does look a little softer in the recent photo, but keep in mind the lighting is obviously different. What do you think?
