Karzzzz promo creates mass hysteria

Click above for more stills This weekend was a special treat for all you die-hard Bollywood buffs. Firstly, there were two big releases Bachna Ae Haseeno and God Tussi Great Ho which hit the marquee and then we at Bollywood Hungama even unveiled the first promos of two of the most keenly anticipated films this year - Karzzzz and Dostana. While the response to both the promos has been simply outstanding, special mention must be made of the buzz that the Karzzzz promo has managed to generate. The reasons for this are manifold. 1. Love him or hate him but you can't ignore Him-esh Reshammiya. Right from the time, the film was announced at a grand mahurat, expectations began soaring. Karzzzz is the second film of actor/ singer/ music composer Himesh Reshammiya after the super-successful Aap Ka Suroor- the Moviee. What sets apart Himesh from other leading actors, is the fact that he is not just acting but also singing and composing his own songs. While the trend is not much common in Bollywood, many of the top international stars like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears or Eminem have achieved tremendous fame doing the same. If Karzzz hits the bulls-eye, the day is not far when Himesh Reshammiya would be truly be considered as a rock-star belonging to an international league. 2. Karzzzz produced by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series and directed by Satish Kaushik is a remake of the 1980 classic Karz starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim and Simi Garewal. While Himesh plays the lead role this time, newcomer Shweta Kumar gets into Tina Munim's shoes and glam diva Urmila Matondkar plays the role immortalized by Simi Garewal. With HR paired opposite two lovely ladies, expect some sparks to fly on screen. 3. Coming to the promo, the moment one hears the strumming of the guitar, the haunting tune which was originally created by Laxmikant Pyarelal comes to your mind. A much fitter and leaner Himesh Reshammiya is seen on stage as the crowd go into frenzy. What's more, this is the first time the actor is seen without his trademark cap and his hair do surely has all the makings of becoming a style statement in the days to come. Keeping in mood with the re-incarnation theme of the film, the credits read Gulshan Kumar re-presents which give you a taste of things to come. The promo shifts gears as HR is shown serenading the pretty Shweta Kumar and the glamorous Urmila Matondkar. HR's vocals in the Lut Jaoon Main Uss Karz Mein immediately strike a chord, even as the actor is seen doing some heavy-duty action sequences. After some shots of gun firing and cars exploding, the promo comes to a close as Himesh Reshammiya (earlier introduced as Monty in the promo) tells Urmila, " Main Ravi Verma hoon...Kaamini" The promo has received a thunderous response and unprecedented hits on Bollywood Hungama and going by the looks of it, this one promises to be complete paisa-vasool entertainment for all HR fans.

Sonam Kapoor on the cover of ELLE magazine

When we got a copy of the August edition of the fashion mag ELLE, we were not just surprised but were highly delighted when we saw the beautiful cover-girl. Looking like a supermodel from Paris, she was no other than the talented young actress, Sonam Kapoor. Sonam simply looks stunning on the cover, to say the least. And it's not just the cover, her pictures inside the mag scream in silence showing the untapped potential that Sonam has. One must say that God must have really spent a few extra hours while creating this beauty! In this issue, Sonam clears the air about 'issues' like lack of confidence, backless ghagra, weight issues etc… She also speaks about her growing up days, her stint working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and also her 'investments'. Go for it guys, and be stunned as we still are…

Subhash K Jha speaks about God Tussi Great Ho

Who but a David Dhawan follower can turn Tom Shadyac's Bruce Almighty into 'Bruise The Almighty'. This unintentional subverted farce insults God and human beings alike. It pretends to say something deep and indelible. It ends up being as profound as a bowl of soggy noodles staring at you for edible nirvana. Arguably one of the most botched-up comedies in recent times, God Tussi Great Ho takes us into territory that the Khan brothers, Salman and Sohail, have been together in David Dhawan's Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya. The cartoon-like cat-and-mouse game between Salman and Sohail to get the perky pretty Priyanka's attentions is completely devoid of zing despite the familiar ring, though admittedly Sohail who's rapidly emerged as one of our most delightful comic actors (see him in Salaam-e-Ishq, Main PyarKyun Kiya and now this and watch him give bade bhai a run for his money) takes the lead. The inhouse channel- war between the two Khans is reminiscent of Shah Rukh-Juhi's comic competitiveness in Aziz Mirza's hugely underrated Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. In fact, Sohail is wickedly inventive in a plot that pulls the characters down with each creaking push of the writer's pathetic pen. Who wrote this garbage? You wonder. And why must Mr. Bachchan be subjected to this sort of tripe trip at this juncture of his career? After Rishi Kapoor in Kunal Kohli's vastly-superior other-wordly satire Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, it's Mr Bachchan's turn to play God on a set that has a cascading waterfall, cotton-candy clouds and Salman suitably dressed in a formal suit. What's missing is the fizz in this askew cocktail. As a writer, Rumi Jafrey is on shockingly shaky grounds. Just like Salman's Volkswagon which changes colours from drab pink to bright red in the second-half when Salman gets godly powers from the 'real' God. Never mind. Because Priyanka's nose- ring changes from left nostril to right. That's about all that the narrative gets right in the trite second-half. The post-interval half is so crummy and scattered you wonder what happened to the director. Was he was on leave while God ghost-directed the second-half? Appalling in structure and abysmal in content God Tussi Great Ho is somewhat bearable for Sohail's comic aptitudes. And yes, Priyanka is easy on the eyes. Watch her in the soap ad on television rather than being part of a film where the characters are nothing more than a prop for the pale parody where all the colours come from the hyper-excited art director who was probably told to pull out all stops. Wish our directors would know where to stop before comedy becomes a travesty.

The Unforgettable Tour Diary: Day 29 - Amitabh's speech for his mother touches an emotional chord

- The entourage reached New York over the weekend gone by. And the highlight this time around was the personal touch which each of the stars brought around in their performances. Whether it was Big B or Abhishek or Ash or all the others traveling in the 'Unforgettable Tour', it was the 'special something' coming out of the interpersonal relationship between all which made the night in New York the one to remember. - An example of the personal touch over the evening was Amitabh Bachchan's 'Khush To Bahaut Hoge Tum' [Deewar] dialogue delivery. On any other evening so far, it was just another dialogue from a film, albeit an immensely famous one which has been regaling the audience for three decades now. However, this time around it was special since the evening was quite close to Big B's mother's anniversary. There was a personal touch involved as it was hard to find an eye which wasn't moist once Bachchan's speech reached its crescendo with 'Mujhe Meri Maa Wapas De Do'! - It was time for some more 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' kind of moments for the entire Bachchan 'parivaar' as for the first time in the history of all the concerts that Big B has been a part of, the number 'Teri Bindiya Re' [Abhimaan] was played. The way the entire sequence of events took place was also extra special since Ash escorted Amitabh Bachchan on stage while Abhishek did the same for Jaya Bachchan. Once together, Ash and Abhi handed over the hands of Amitabh and Jaya to each other while the song played in the background. A complete family affair! - Frankly, New York crowd wasn't really easy to win from the very beginning. The response was good but not magical, as had been the case with the shows preceding it. Bachchans and group decided that they had to make it something special, something magical which would get some high energy into the proceedings. Vowing to give audience much more than what they could have bargained for, the stars promised each other to go all out and make it happen. - This was inspiring enough for the youngsters as they brought in a certain momentum to their performances which literally forced the audience to get on their feet. In fact there was a stage when Vishal didn't quite worry about the security guidelines and jumped right into the crowd to get that 'personal touch'. With one of the composers of Om Shanti Om, Tashan and Bachna Ae Haseeno amongst them (Shekhar entertained the crowds while relegating himself to the boundary line set by the barricades), it was quite natural for the crowds to get ballistic. - Meanwhile, Shekhar's young daughter (named Bipasha) too made her stage debut as she joined Big B while the number 'Rang Barse' was on. It was a sweet moment as the cute little kid tried matching steps with a legend 60 years elder to her. This is the reason why, in future, when she would be reading through the chapters of history, this would certainly be one 'unforgettable' golden moment of her life. - The number 'Salaam Namaste' which Vishal and Shekhar have been performing on stage turned out to be special as well since everyone from Abhi to Ash joined Preity and Ritiesh as the song played on. The stage was nothing less than a party on the beach (just like the situation from the film by Siddharth Anand who has just delivered Bachna Ae Haseeno) with the song managing to truly liven up the audience. - There were some impromptu performances happening on stage as well and one of them was rendition of a rap track which is almost like an anthem for the New York crowds. Widely being famous as the New York theme rap, the track had Abhishek along with Vishal and Shekhar bringing on the thump. This took place soon after they were through with their trademark Gujarati folk track which is a part of the performance throughout the tour. This was THE moment since the locals were more than charmed with what they were a part of and from this moment on, there was no looking back with each heart truly been won! - Much more than satisfied with the way the evening went by, the stars now head for London where they would be performing after a break of more than one week. With the show being touted as the biggest ever on this tour, especially due to wide-scale Indian population making it a sell-out event, it is going to be one rocking weekend to be watched out for.

"People were complaining that SIK didn't get an opening" - Vipul Shah

Vipul Shah is plain amused that even after a record breaking opening at the box office, there have been quite a few trade pundits/other notable names from the film fraternity who believed that Singh Is Kinng hadn't quite got an opening. And that too when the film has now officially beaten the biggest of first week openers at the box office and sits pretty much at the top of the heap with more than Rs. 40 crores just from India. "Even as the first weekend numbers were officially out, there were people complaining that SIK didn't get an opening", smiles Vipul Shah who is now the only filmmaker in the 21st century to have delivered four successful films in a row - Aankhen, Waqt, Namastey London and now Singh Is Kinng, "Some of them called up directly while many confessed in whispers stating - 'Yaar, collections toh theek hai par opening nahi lagi'. Of course, they were referring to percentage occupancy of people which was over 80%. Their grudge was that why wasn't it 100% on the opening day itself in spite of all the hype." Since the film was floated on close to 1000 prints in Indian market itself, it was quite obvious that expecting cent percent audience in 15-20-25 shows wasn't quite a feasible task. "Exactly", agrees Shah, "One has to look at the bottom line which means to make sure that your film is THE film which is being watched by the audience in the week of its release. In case of Singh Is Kinng that is exactly the case. And for the uninitiated, we did manage 100% at majority of centers across the country over the first weekend. In fact in Mumbai, we did much more than even Om Shanti Om if we look at the opening day numbers. First week collections which have been out more than justify our stand as well." But why such negative attitude by an industry which is in fact thirsting for a bona fide box office success? "They didn't spare even Om Shanti Om and said that there was a drop in collections as days progressed. What were they smoking then? As we know, it is the biggest ever money spinner made. See, such a phenomenon is visible in stock market as well where there would be bulls and bears. If something is going up and supported by a bunch of people, the others would try to pull it down. Just like people who stand behind you, there are negative people in the industry as well. One should not really pay any heed and move on by stating - 'Ok, good for you; let the numbers come'. Now that the first week results are out, I guess everyone is invited to join the party celebrations," concludes Vipul with a glee.

Zayed returns back to work in Bangkok after an accident while shooting Blue

Zayed Khan who's currently on a self-performing stunts spree jumped out of a high-rise in Bangkok while shooting for Blue. The fall went wrong and Zayed's foreheaed hit the windshield of a car. "The blood gushed out and was all over my face. It took a while for everyone to realize I was injured," says Zayed from Bangkok. After a visit to the hospital, a couple of stitches, heavy sedation and antibiotics on Sunday, Zayed was back shooting on Monday morning. "Fortunately the cut is hidden by my hair. So no continuity problems," says Zayed whose family back home, panicked when they heard about the accident. Earlier during the month when Zayed Khan's deejay brother-in-law Aqeel opened a new outlet for his chain of nightclub Poison in Hyderabad, Zayed with his wife Malaika and son Zidaan joined Aqeel in his hour of excitement. "Aqeel is not my brother-in-law. He's my brother," says Zayed who happens to be the only son in a family of daughters. "We're not just close; we also stay a stone's throw away from one another in Mumbai. We're there for Aqeel whenever he needs us. I came to Hyderabad with my wife just to support him." Zayed's wife who's half-English (her mom is British and father Gujarati) was away visiting her folks in London for a whole month-and-a-half. She has just returned. "It was her brother's 40th birthday and the whole family was getting together. Much as I wanted her to stay back during the release of Mission Istaanbul, I could not keep her away from such an important moment in her family's life. She hadn't visited her parents for a very long time. First she was pregnant, then Zidaan was born and was to small to travel... This was her first break from Mumbai." Zayed seems to be one of the few devoted husbands in Bollywood. "Am I? That's surprising. Anyway, let the others have fun. I'm happy being devoted to Malaika." While his wife was away Zayed had a ball shooting in the Bahamas for Blue and then Yuvraj. "Working with a living legend like Subhash Ghai in Yuvrajis such a privilege. It's tearjerker with drama about relationships. It's the quintessential Bollywood films. And my other forthcoming film Blue is just the opposite experience. It's a get-happy adventure-sporty film. I'm also a doing a romantic-comedy with Vashu Bhagnani. I haven't done one of those. I was dying to doing it. I'm looking forward to juicing this one." A pakka family man Zayed has his father Sanjay Khan's reputation as a jubilee star to live up to. "I'm aware of my dad's track record. But I'm not just looking to equal his track record. I'm hoping to better it. But seriously, today the box-office has changed so much. Things were different in my dad's times. The relationships within the industry and definitions of success have changed. Today you can't walk on the road without a camera following you. You either love it. Or you don't. But I'm not scared of the future. I'll keep trying until I succeed."

Top Ten albums of the week

Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses 1 3 Bachna Ae Haseeno Last week it was 'Singh Is Kinng' which reached the #1 spot as the film hit the screens. This week it is 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' which has found quite some escalation for itself in the charts. Peaking at just the right time, this is yet another musical success for Vishal-Shekhar this year after 'Tashan'. None 2 1 Singh Is Kinng Closely following 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' with not much difference, it is still in the race to catch up further for the top spot. It would be an interesting fortnight to see how the music performs, especially with the Snoop Dogg version of the title song out now on the music channels. 'Talli Hui' appears to be forced into the narrative 3 2 Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa In last fortnight, 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa' has been made to drop by a spot each by 'Singh Is Kinng' and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' respectively. Though the music is expected to sell for many more months to come, it is also seeing some competition from 'Rock On' which is seriously looking at making an entry into the Top-3. None 4 5 Rock On Audience choice has been the final winner in case of 'Rock On'. A sound which wasn't quite catchy to begin with has eventually found it's followers that has resulted in 'Rock On' going further up. With a fortnight more to go for the film's release, it should manage to find a Top-3 entry for itself. The music sticks to the theme but in the process caters to niche audience 5 4 Kismat Konnection Pritam's hit score for 'Kismat Konnection' ensured that everyone associated with the film made money. This is the reason why if the film would be remembered for anything after a year or so, it would be the songs more than anything else. Film is more or less out of theaters which means that 'Kismat Konnection' won't turn out to be another 'Race', 'Jannat' or 'Singh Is Kinng' for Pritam 6 6 Ugly Aur Pagli Staying on in the charts in spite of the film being out of theaters in a fortnight's time, 'Ugly Aur Pagli' has managed to do quite good for itself. However, with the film's promotion coming to a standstill and all eyes on Mallika's upcoming release 'Maan Gayre Mughall-E-Azam', focus is bound to shift from this Anu Malik soundtrack. The film has met with a lukewarm response at the box office which is bound to adversely effect album sales as well 7 8 Race It's Pritam all the way from top till the bottom of the charts as his albums from early this year - 'Race' and 'Jannat' - swap positions. Moving a spot up, 'Race' continues to find an entry into the households which still do not own a copy of this year's bestseller! None 8 7 Jannat With newer albums like 'C Kkompany', 'Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam', 'Hijack' and 'Ada' still waiting to make a dent into the charts, it is songs from 'Jannat' which are continuing to catch fancy of music lovers. Rensil D'Silva breaks his silence on the Kishore Kumar project

The hype and the hooplah not to mention the monstrous amounts of moolah that has apparently exchanged hands to put Kishore Kumar's life on celluloid, seem drastically premature. Says a source, "The whole idea of announcing the project long before things had even begun to fall in place was to cash in on Kishoreda's 79th birthday. The fact is, nothing is ready yet. It would take at least a year, if not more, for this ambitious project to concretize." The bio-pics's distinguished writer Rensil D'Silva best known for his sterling and startling historically-challenged screenplay of Rang De Basanti and currently in the process of directing his untitled Saif-Kareena-Vivek Oberoi thriller for Karan Johar, is a little puzzled by the haste shown in announcing the project and his name as the ambitious bio-pic's writer. "I'm currently in New York finalizing locations for the film that I'm going to direct for Karan Johar. So I really don't know what's going on back home." Shouldn't Rensil have been present when the Kishore Kumar project was announced? "I guess so," the reticent write seems unsure. "They must've their reason for announcing the project when they did. I haven't started any work on it. I've just heard that I'm doing it. The film's director Shoojir Sircar and I have known each other for years. When I was told he was helming the project I didn't hesitate. But yes, it is a daunting task to put together a man as colourful, versatile, adventurous and unpredictable as Kishore Kumar." Rensil doesn't know how to approach the mammoth task. "How do I telescope a life so flush with genius? Do I go back and forth in time? A linear narrative seems impossible. But one thing I won't do is official research. I don't want to harp on well-known myths about Kishore Kumar, like his eccentricity, etc. I'd rather dwell on unknown facets of the man. For this I'd have to meet the people who knew Kishore Kumar intimately." Here again there's a hitch. Rensil cannot connect with the generation that knew Kishore well. And that would include Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, music composers Pyarelal and Rajesh Roshan, movie baron Pritish Nandy, Kishore K'd two wives and sons, etc. "I guess I'd first have to know the people who knew Kishore Kumar before I can find out about him. So yes, this project will take a great amount of time. And I won't be rushed." Does he feel up to the task? "Well, most pople who saw Rang De Basanti felt connecting Bhagat Singh to a contemporary context was something they'd have never imagined. I know chronicling the life of Kishore Kumar won't be easy. But who said I want to take the easy way out?" And who in Rensil's opinion can play Kishore Kumar? "Ha. That's a tough one. We need someone who can dance, sing act and look like the great man. But our industry is full of surprises. Please don't forget, when Robert Downey Jr was selected to play Chaplin in the Richard Attenborough bio-pic people thought it was the worst injustice to be done to the comic genius. Kishoreda is our comic genius. And there must be someone equal to the task of portraying a man so versatile."
