The Unforgettable Tour Diary: Day 15 - Sound glitch makes audience the hero

- Show No. 5: And it would sound like a cliché if commented that Houston turned out to be yet another madness in motion over the fortnight gone by. Houston not just carried forward from San Francisco but turned out to be notches above that. And of course, Toronto, Trinidad as well as LA. With approximately 15000 strong crowds thronging the venue, it was yet another starry night where audience was the ultimate winner! - Audience was the ultimate winner? But why? Well, read on. For all the performers out there, they had an assignment cut out for them. They had to rehearse well. They had to wear the best costumes. They had to keep their energy level high. They had to do something creative while in the realms of staying within the content charted out for them. And yes, they had to occasionally be innovative as well. However, at Houston, audience proved that it could be quite some force when given an opportunity! - And this opportunity came, courtesy a technical glitch. For close to a minute, the sound completely disappeared even as the performance was happening on stage. And this performance was from none other than Amitabh Bachchan while he was singing 'Rang Barse'. Big B was going great guns, the dancers along with him were in great mood as well, and suddenly, in the middle of the act, the crowd stopped hearing voice from the stage. This is when they impromptu decided to join the fun instead of being a spoilsport. From here on it was crowd's turn to take it on from there, and rest, as they say, was history! - For this entire minute, the crowd continued to clap, sing together in unison, get on the seats, dances on the floors and ensured that the momentum only went up instead of dipping. Shiamak Davar's troupe which was dancing on the stage didn't get hassled as well and went on with the performance without being bothered by the technical glitch. - Looking at the way audience was reacting to the entire situation, it was difficult for Riteish, Vishal, and Shekhar to hold themselves any more. While seeing it all from the sidelines all this while, they too jumped on the stage and joined the show on the stage. Clapping hard and dancing even harder, each and every person on the evening ensured that it was one of the BEST ever of their lives! - Talking about Vishal and Shekhar, after four rocking shows behind them, it was irresistible for them not to check out how it really feels from the audience point of view when the performances are on at the stage. This is why this time around they decided to have a clearer dekko from closer to the audience than seeing it all either from backstage or sidelines. They watched Big B perform to dialogues from Agneepath ['Apun Ka Aaj Maut Ke Saath Appointment Hai'] and Deewar amongst many others and as it comes from the horse's mouth, there wasn't a single eye around, which was not moist. - Apart from the show, which was undoubtedly huge with a starry presence, there were quite a few behind the scenes incidents, which made a follow up to this evening together. Apparently, after the press conference a day earlier followed by a 'Meet and Greet' event, all the stars were together in the hotel elevator except for Amitabh Bachchan. As they stepped out at one of the floors, Big B happened to be around who invited everyone to have dinner at his place. - The conversation which followed was quite eventful for everyone as it went from 8:30 PM in the evening till 2:00 AM in the morning. Conversation revolved around everyone narrating some special incidents from their lives which were hitherto untold. Apart from some of the real bizarre incidents told, there was one heartwarming story which surprised everyone around. This was the one where Big B threw some light around his visit to Kabul for the shooting of Khuda Gawah. - Apparently during his travel to Kabul, the city was facing troubled times. While Big B traveled in a helicopter, he was escorted by two helicopters at either ends for security reasons. As his helicopter hit the helipad, he wasn't allowed to step down. Reason? As per the Afghani tradition, a special guest isn't allowed to step down on the ground. Instead, he is carried to the destination. So there came a huge 'Pathan' who carried Big B all the way from the helicopter to his destination. - There is an emotional tale about this 'destination' as well! The moment Bachchan entered the village, he saw horde of people out there on the streets. While he was humbled by the fact that everyone came to greet him on their land, he was shocked to know the real reason behind this huge assembly of people. As goes the legend, they all had vacated their houses since they wanted to extend him the invitation of staying over at their place. As per locals, since there were no hotels worthy of his stature to accommodate him, they wanted Bachchan to pick and choose any of the houses which he deemed comfortable enough. An emotion-struck Bachchan eventually had to relent and was a guest of an Afghani family during his stay at Kabul!

Sanjay Dutt and Bunty Walia come together to make a period flick

Buddies Sanjay Dutt and Bunty Walia are all set to make a period film which is based on the battle of Saragarhi. For the uninitiated, the Battle of Saragarhi was fought in the North West Frontier Province during September of 1897 between 21 Sikhs of a Sikh regiment (defending an Army post) and 10000 Afghan and Orakzai tribesman. The film titled 21 Battle of Saragarhi- From Ashes to Glory will be made under the banner of Sanjay Dutt Productions and GS Entertainment. Rohit Jugraj (who earlier directed James and Superstar) will direct this film. As for the Deadly Dutt, he will not only be co-producing the film but will also play the important role of Havaldar Ishar Singh who led the Sikh onslaught in the battle. Nearly 20 other actors are yet to be signed for this period flick. To leave no stone unturned in representing historic facts and events accurately, Sanjay Dutt along with Bunty Walia and director Rohit Jugraj even made a trip to the capital to meet I&B Minister Priyaranjan Das Munshi and Defence Minister A.K. Antony. This magnum-opus will have some high end special effects and by the looks of it this historical flick indeed promises to be a biggie.

Rahul Khanna to star in Saif's and Karan Johar's home productions

After years in the fringes and being seen as too sophisticated to do the masala stuff convincingly, Rahul Khanna is ready to strike gold at the desi box-office. Akshaye Khanna's sibling, so far known for his performances in Deepa Mehta's 1947 Earth and Bollywood Hollywood, has a very special role in Imtiaz Ali's untitled film that Saif Ali Khan is producing. Though bound by contract not to speak about it, Rahul is featured in an important role in the much talked-about Saif-Deepika film. Talking about Rahul's role in his home production, Saif says, "We needed someone with grace, dignity, charm, class and a sound educational background to play that role. Rahul was our first choice. Thankfully he said yes." Considering this is Saif's own production how sizeable could Rahul's role be? "Depends on how you define 'sizeable'. His role is pivotal to the plot and cannot be measured in terms of footage. For the film to be effective it is important for Rahul to be effective," says Saif. Considering both Saif and Rahul are star-children have they been bonding from childhood? "Not really," Saif is frank enough to admit. "I've met Rahul just a few times over the years. He seems to be great fun. Charming and intelligent." It's not just Saif Rahul is bonding with. If all goes well, Rahul will be working with another one of his father's colleague's sons. Rahul will play a small but pivotal role in Karan Johar's production featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen-Sharma. Says a source, "Karan has known Rahul and Akshaye since childhood. For long, he has been looking for a place to accommodate Rahul. The Ranbir-Konkona film allows him that space."

Guess Who?

If you have just got up from your dizzy and woozy weekend sleep, then, here's wishing you Goooood Morning. And guess what! We are sure that a mere good Morning is not good enough to make you feel refreshed, that's why we present to you 'Guess Who', your tonic to kick-start not just your day, but your week! The clues for this week are as follows: Whenever a girl stands in front of the mirror and asks 'Mirror Mirror on the wall; am I the fairest of them all', the undoubted and unopposed answer is YES. But when you try asking the same mirror 'Mirror Mirror on the wall; am I the 'whitest' of them all', the answer is surely a Big NO, for the only reason the 'whitest' of them all is a lady who also happens to be the answer for our 'Guess Who'. This lady is synonymous with grace, poise and elegance. Her soothing screen presence did wonders not just on the silver screen, but on the television as well. Lastly, the city of dreams has changed from Bombay to Mumbai, but the youthfulness and the charm on this lady's face and complexion refuses to change at all! In other words, her divine beauty is giving complexion to all the heroines! If you think you have guessed the answer, then go ahead and post your reply below. Akshay's 12 hr Jet-Ski class for an action sequence in Singh Is Kinng

While shooting a scene in Singh Is Kinng on the Gold Coast, Akshay Kumar had to Jet Ski in deep water but realized that he would not be allowed to do so without an official license. Producer Vipul Shah reveals, "It takes three days to get a jet-ski license but Akshay explained the time constraints. He did a three-day course in 12 hours. He got up at 6 am and got his license by 7 pm. He had to give a written and practical test. The action scene we have shot is one of the most expensive ones that Bollywood has ever seen and has been directed by Danny Baldwin." Akshay laughs, "Going through a theory and practical exam was like going back to school!" Danny Baldwin is an incredibly popular stunts coordinator in Australia with over a hundred films and television series to his credit. He is even said to have worked with Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai and Michael Douglas in The Ghost And The Darkness. Commenting on how he was approached, Shah says, "When we went for a reccee to Australia, we saw a lot of show-reels and met a lot of technicians. But we saw a clear synergy with Danny as his style of action was exactly what we needed. The beauty about the action in Singh is Kinng is that not only is it great to look at but makes the audience laugh as well." Reacting to rumors that the glamour action in Singh Is Kinng resembles that of Dhoom 2, Vipul adds, "It is similar only in quality. These are very high-end action sequences. Akshay had to be very careful in certain sequences, for instance, the scene in which he had to jump from one moving lift to another without supporting cables. But Akshay is Akshay! He did it with much panache and agility. Enjoy watching it in the film!"

Top Ten albums of the week

Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses 1 1 Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa It has been four weeks since the film released but the music continues to remain undefeated at the top. It would be interesting to see if it stays consistent even as next fortnight sees the release of 'Singh Is Kinng' and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' in quick succession. None 2 2 Singh Is Kinng Akshay, Anees and Vipul are just a few days away from hitting the top spot at the music charts. Because soon 'Snoop Dogg' sung title song 'Singh Is Kinng' will arrive and from there on it should be unstoppable for the album to reach the top spot. Snoop Dogg number has been kept hidden from the audience for quite some time now. It is high time that it's unveiled! 3 3 Bachna Ae Haseeno This one stays on to be consistent in Top-3. However, Vishal and Shekhar are giving quite some competition to the albums at the top, especially with R.D. Burman on their side. An excellent looking music video of the title song is out and by the time film hits the screen, it should be a rage! Due to disagreement between YRF and certain music channels, the songs aren't finding an all around satellite publicity. It's a pity, especially for the title song music video, which is quite an outing for the viewers! 4 4 Kismat Konnection If not for 'Pappu' from JTYJN, 'Aai Pappi' would have been THE number to be hitting the top spot at all discotheques and clubs! The number is an anthem in itself and should be heard for many more weeks to come. The film has seen a heavy drop in the days gone by and with impending releases of other biggies, 'Kismat Konnection' doesn't quite stand a chance to break into Top-3 5 5 Ugly Aur Pagli In isolation, 'Talli' has turned out to be a huge hit. In fact Anu Malik demonstrates with this song that when given a platform, he has in it to deliver what current generation wants. Making a song in a mode similar to that of Pritam, he gets Mika, Hard Kaur and his daughter Anmol to come up with a chartbuster track! The film has met with a lukewarm response at the box office which is bound to adversely effect album sales as well 6 8 Rock On Within a fortnight, Shankar Ehsaan Loy see yet another escalation for their soundtrack that has jumped up by 2 spots yet again. Quite close to Top-5 now, it seems quite probable that 'Rock On' would eventually end up doing reasonably well for itself in urban centers (which is it's target audience) The music sticks to the theme but in the process caters to very restricted segment of audience. 7 6 Jannat 'Jannat' does quite good for itself for yet another week and the way most of the recent musical releases have been quite lukewarm, it would well remain enjoy the same success until bigger films start arriving in the month of October. None 8 7 Race Just like 'Jannat', 'Race' too would benefit immensely from lack of any solid competition for at least a month more to come. None 9 9 Ada One wonders what's still keeping this album in the charts. However, the fact is that it is doing well in spite of absolutely nothing known about the film. Anything more that the album succeeds from here is simply bonus for everyone associated for it. Publicity, publicity and some more publicity is required for this album. Period. 10 New God Tussi Great Ho Finally 'God Tussi Great Ho' arrives in the charts. The USP of the film is coming together of Sajid-Wajid and Salman Khan once again after 'Partner'. 'Tujhe Aksa Beach Ghuma Doon' is the biggest success of the album so far. A number like 'Let's Party' is hardly better than 'It's The Time To Disco'. Also, there has hardly been much time between the album and the film release. Source: Music Festival, MGF Mall

Upen gets dubbed again, but leaves happily to be Grand Marshall in LA

It's become a habit, hard to break off. But every film so far featuring Upen Patel has his voice dubbed by a dubbing artiste. Though he had hoped things would change with Money Hai Toh Honey Hai, it wasn't so. Producer Kumar Mangat has for the second time in a row after One Two Three got Upen's voice dubbed by a dubbing artiste. When asked, Upen shrugs, "The producer would be the best person to answer why my voice was dubbed. I don't want to create any issues. I'd rather talk about my trip to Los Angeles where I've been invited to serve as Grand Marshal at the Independence Day parade on August 10." Upen is the first male Grand Marshal from Bollywood at the Parade. "I believe Bipasha Basu and other Bolly queens got the honour earlier. So I'm quite delighted." Another source of delight? The house on Pali Hill in Bandra (Mumbai) that Upen is building. Interestingly, the entire space is being designed and decorated on the internet by a designer Eric Mutheza from Dubai. "He never personally came down to look at my place. I gave him design specifications on the email and he instructed his assistants in Mumbai to do the needful. But it's turned out beautifully," says Upen. It looks like long-distance relationships are Upen's destiny. His Brazilian girlfriend Camilla Tavares lives and works in Italy. And they hardly get the chance to connect. "In fact Upen and Camilla have hardly had time together since they got involved. They did get attracted to each other. But after that she has been busy in Italy and he in Mumbai. She has been down in Mumbai only once. Even now, Upen plans to return from LA in August via London to visit his family. But he has no plans of meeting Camilla in Italy."

Remembering Rafi

Mohammed Rafi's daughters Nasreen and Yasmin and son-in-law Meraj Ahmed string memorable moments on the occasion of the legendary singer's 28th death anniversary on July 31 Nasreen: A complete family man, dad was a man of few words. After returning from his recordings he always spent time with all his children. Though he never showed his affection openly, he never hid his love for his grandchild Tasneem, my daughter. He celebrated her birthday on July 12 with great pomp and that same month he left for his heavenly abode. Despite his heavy schedule, he would take time off to take us on picnics to Lonavla, Mahabaleshwar or Matheran. Those were the days filled with fun and laughter. We would all look forward to these small holidays. We had a bungalow in Lonavla with a swimming pool. On the insistence of the kids, he too would jump into the pool, clad in dhoti kurta. With them he would become a child too. Dad was never strict with us. Even when he was angry about something, he never yelled since he was a very quiet man. But one look was enough for our knees to buckle. We never disobeyed him. It is very strange that we don't recall him admonishing us for being naughty. He liked khamoshi and thus never liked to see children crying or left hungry. Tasneem never cried as a baby and so he was very fond of her. Yasmin: Every time he won an award he would be thrilled. He would throw a party for his friends from the industry and our mother would cook for them all by herself. He loved the biryani and rotis that she made. Dad was known for his fondness for mithai and Moghlai food. He loved tea but had it only at home. He enjoyed feeding everyone. Nasreen: For some strange reason, dad saw to it that none of us were associated with the film industry. We were kept away from the limelight and never allowed to meet anyone even if they came home. He was averse to the idea of any of his children getting into the film industry which is why he sent my brothers Mohd Khalid Rafi, Mohd Hamid Rafi and Mohd Saeed Rafi and me to London for education. I was only 12 years old then while my brothers were 16, 12 and 8 respectively. Yasmin and Shahid were too young and were made to stay back. He said it was in the interest of the children that he kept them away from the family. And every time he was on a world tour with his troupe he would always stop over at London to meet all of us. Most of the time our mother accompanied him as it was her chance too to meet us. There were some very rare times when we accompanied him to his rehearsals but we never got to see him at work. Meraj Ahmed: Rafisaab was my mausa (mausi's husband) and I have known him since I was a kid. Many a times I have accompanied him for his recordings. I have been witness to his generosity and love for the people around him. Nasreen: I liked most of his sad numbers and Yasmin prefers the happy, peppy numbers. Even today she switches on the radio in the morning to listen to dad's songs. But the impact of his greatness hit me when I accompanied him to a Shankar-Jaikishan Nite in 1969 in Mumbai. I was pleasantly surprised to see my father in a very different mood. He was so chulbula on stage, he whistled to the song Thoda ruk jaayegi to and Badan pe sitare lapete hue. It was a breathtaking experience for me to see the love and adulation that my father was showered upon. I felt very proud that day that I was his daughter. Of his hobbies, he loved flying kites and we kids enjoyed holding the manjha for him. He was very good at the game and whenever he found time, he would take us to the terrace of our house. When there was a black kite flying in the sky, everyone in the vicinity knew that Rafi saab was flying kites on his terrace. Strangely he wanted only black kites. Yasmin: Since we were never exposed to the industry, nobody knows the family much today. Shahid was very young when dad left us and when he was around 17-18 years, his friends encouraged him to take up singing and he did one film Socha Na Tha wherein he sang as well as acted. But since dad never approved of it, our mother was not keen that Shahid take up a singing career and she discouraged him. Hence he did not follow a career in films. Nasreen: My older siblings settled in London after their education and worked for some airlines company till they passed away some time back. Their families are now based in London. Our eldest sister Parveen lives with her doctor-husband in London. Shahid, Yasmin and I have settled in Mumbai. I was 29 when dad passed away. That fateful day, some producers from Kolkata were in Mumbai to meet him to record for a Durga Pooja album in Bengali. Though he was not keeping too well, dad went ahead with the recording stating that the people had come all the way from Kolkata for his services. He decided to oblige them. No one was aware that he was in pain during the rehearsals. Later when he returned home, he was in a lot of pain and was sweating profusely. It was the month of Ramzan and he was fasting. He was sitting on the sofa when my mother noticed that his nails had turned blue and called the doctor who decided to shift him to hospital. He called us to his side and kissed us on our foreheads and said, "Mere liye dua karna." Though in severe pain, dad walked down the stairs to his car. Just as the car started, he looked up and waved to us. He had suffered a very major heart attack and the end came soon after that. When his funeral procession was on its way, all the roads of Bandra were blocked. The entire film industry had come to pay their last respects to a great singer. Only his favourite Shammi Kapoor could not make it as he was out of town. While last respects were being paid at the Mahim dargah, Raj Kapoor had priests performing a pooja outside the dargah for my dad. Meraj Ahmed : There was mourning all over. Reports of a girl committing suicide in Bangladesh on hearing the news of his death confirmed the fact that he was loved not only here but worldwide as well. Screen India

No fashion brands in Dostana

Click above for more stills It's out. The look for Dostana, the fun-packed romcom about three friends is out and the three actors in the lead - Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra are sporting the Yankee look. Set in urban America, the look, created by Aki Narula and Manish Malhotra, will be light and summery in keeping with the lighthearted tone of the film. And unlike Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, wherein designer brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Louis Vinton made their presence felt, there are no heavyweight fashion brands starring in this movie. Says director Tarun Mansukhani, who was first assistant on Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, "Dostana has a very young feel. Both John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan's clothes have been designed by Aki Narula, and Priyanka Chopra's by Manish Malhotra. The designers who started working on the clothes a year before the shooting began, did some research on the kind of clothes youngsters would be wearing a year later and came up with the fabulous designs." He added that John and Abhishek have been given diversely different looks and clothes. "You will see John as never before in trendy t-shirts and shorts, while Abhishek will be attired in bright shirts and scarves. Besides the beachwear that is being talked about, Priyanka who plays a working girl in the film will also adorn very smart office wear comprising shorts, and dresses. All clothes have a very casual and chic look as the story is set in urban America. No big brands names are associated with the clothes," says the debutant director. Manish Malhotra says, "I have designed chic and trend setting glamorous shots that can be worn to parties, dinners as well as office as they are in vogue. Otherwise in films generally shorts are always in blue denim or white and worn only in sports." A major part of the film was shot in Miami, and the shooting is now complete, except for an item song which will be canned on the three main artistes, in a 10 day shoot in September. Dostana is due for release in November. Screen India
