Shaken Up

It Happened

Photo: Joshua Lott/Reuters

As Los Angeles was shaking from a 5.4 tremor last week, New Yorkers quaked as Governor Paterson delivered a nerve-racking budget speech on live TV, calling for massive cuts and telling the state “this situation will get worse before it gets better.” Supporters of Hillary Clinton trembled with rage as it became clear that she won’t be Barack Obama’s veep. John McCain tried to wobble Obama’s world-tour momentum by comparing him to Britney Spears (who, coincidentally, was looking much less jiggly in flattering new beach pics). Shaky videos of New York’s Finest working over suspects — and throwing a textbook tackle on one cyclist — played in heavy rotation.

Former Newark mayor Sharpe James was sentenced to prison for giving sweetheart land deals to a lady love. Manhattan D.A. Robert Morgenthau began his 90th year by launching his reelection campaign. A faker calling himself Clark Rockefeller allegedly took his 7-year-old daughter on the lam. Parks employees warned parents they could be ticketed for bringing barefoot kids to playgrounds. MetroCard machines charged unhappy credit-card users for cards they didn’t receive. Life-size dinosaurs chewed the scenery at Madison Square Garden. Four victims of a Harlem shooting refused to snitch on their attackers. Happy couple Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson ambled around downtown, pausing to dance with the gays at the raunchy East Village bar the Cock.

Marc Jacobs might have tied the knot, sort of, in France. Serial monogamists Lance Armstrong and Kate Hudson called it quits on their romance. A-Rod dug in against C-Rod’s attempt to void their prenup. The Yankees traded for all-star catcher Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez after it became clear that Jorge Posada was out for the season. Mountains of surcharged baggage piled up at the American Airlines terminal at JFK. And the Big Apple passed Vegas and Orlando, Florida, as the top American destination for European tourists, just in time for the August arrival of tour groups from Frankfurt. —Mark Adams

What Today’s Monster News Tells Us About Today's New Yorkers

Photo: Newsday/Alanna Nevitski

In Queens in 1964, a woman named Kitty Genovese was stabbed in front of her house. She screamed, the neighbors heard her, but no one helped. The killer had time to leave, twice, before coming back to finally kill her, because it took the neighbors almost an hour to call the police.

What does this have to do with the Monster of Montauk? Well.

Suppose the Monster is not actually a monster, but an earthly creature. A dog, perhaps. Suppose the original photo (above) Gawker and Daily Intel ran is real, and the photo Newsday ran today (inset) is real, and that they are of the same beast as the photographers claim. We're no scientists — far from it — but the difference between the two pictures, the amount of decomposition that occurred between pictures, suggests that the creature lay on the beach not for an afternoon, as Newsday says, but for quite some time, and that although several people came and photographed it, no one alerted any authorities to take it away. In the interim, the people who took the pictures showed their photos to other people, who also did not call anyone to take it away. They didn't even say, "Is anyone here a marine biologist?"

Back in the sixties, psychologists dubbed the tendency for people to walk away from a horror, expecting that someone better equipped would come to take care of it, "bystander effect," or "Kitty Genovese syndrome," after the case that came to symbolize New Yorkers' — and Americans' — apathy about getting "involved." "The case touched on a fundamental issue of the human condition, our primordial nightmare,'' legendary City University of New York psychology professor Stanley Milgram said at a conference on "Bad Samaritanism" in 1984. "If we need help, will those around us stand around and let us be destroyed or will they come to our aid? Are those other creatures out there to help us sustain our life and values, or are we individual flecks of dust just floating around in a vacuum?''

In June of this year, when a woman called Esmin Green collapsed on the floor of Brooklyn Hospital and died, lying there for over an hour in full view of other patients and a security guard, it proved that nearly half a century after the Kitty Genovese murder—even after 9/11—eNew Yorkers still have a problem with empathy. And in a weird way — a very weird way, we grant you — these two photos of the Montauk Monster prove it, too. That monster screamed into the night; and no one came to his aid. All we are is dust in the wind.

Ahem. So have a great weekend, everyone! And rest in peace, little guy, wherever (and whatever!) you are.

André Leon Talley Will Not Style Michelle Obama

André Leon Talley and Michelle Obama, not shopping together.Photo: Getty Images

We've diligently restrained our excitement about the remote possibility of André Leon Talley trying to meddle with Michelle Obama's style, and it's time you did, too. What calmed us, you ask? Well, Style.com hunted Talley down at Michael's and asked him about the pesky rumors that he was advising — or at least trying to advise — the potential First Lady on her wardrobe choices. He swiftly dismissed them, adding that the first time he met Michelle was at the Calvin Klein/Vogue fund-raiser in New York in June:
"[L]et me go on record saying that I have never, ever given her any advice on what to wear. To put the record straight, I think that Michelle Obama does not need advice."

So he didn't help her select the Isabel Toledo gown she wore to the fund-raiser, nor did he help her pick out the White House/Black Market dress she wore on The View (which isn't surprising because we wouldn't expect White House/Black Market to be one of Talley's go-tos) — but he was quite fond of both outfits. He also compared her to Jackie Kennedy:

"She has, in many ways, taken some of Jackie's elements of simplicity, elegant restraint, three strands of bubble-gum pearls, the flip of hair, solid colors, simple lines, and clothes—and it's working for her. I think she's incredible."

We concur.

Planned South Street Seaport Redevelopment Looks Kinda Cool

seaport

Earlier this week we visited a just-opened storefront installation showing nifty models of the new South Street Seaport being planned, and we’re thinking it could persuade locals, mistrustful of any proposals to overhaul the waterfront, that developer General Growth Properties might not actually destroy the very fabric of their lives. The idea, basically, is to cut away the schlock, drop all the retail to street level, and make the water easier to reach. This will involve moving a seventies-era fish-market building from Fulton Street to the pier so that it opens water views, putting a 42-story hotel-condo at South Street's edge to line up with the Brooklyn Bridge on the skyline, and using this hotel and a smaller “boutique hotel” to raise money for landscaping to create three plazas facing the water under the FDR. The tower will be 70 feet wide — “Nobody should confuse this with a Trump,” says architect Gregg Pasquarelli of SHoP Architects, which is also designing adjacent city-owned piers for recreational use. Instead of a typical glass skin, SHoP proposes a bronze-colored series of hexagons to give the building weight and light. A smaller hotel below will have shutter windows on each floor-through suite. And Pasquarelli talks about creating a “cool and romantic discovery” with passageways from upland streets under the tower. Or, as we prefer to think of them, tunnels of love. —Alec Appelbaum

Christian Audigier to Make ‘Couture’ Clothes With the Eurythmics

Sweet dreams are made of … Christian Audigier? Who are we to disagree?Photo: AFP/Getty Images

What does Christian Audigier do when he isn't busy painting swirly patterns on gold lamé leggings? He's forging partnerships with random celebrities you thought may as well be left for the annals of Best Week Ever, that's what. Today we learn he's collaborating with one half of the Eurythmics, Dave Stewart, on a clothing line called Rock Fabulous. This, mind you, comes weeks after he announced Sarah Larson would star in his campaign and that he's collaborating with Michael Jackson on a clothing line (we guess he has a thing for musicians of yore). Here's how a press release describes the line:
The Rock Fabulous philosophy is about staying true to your dreams and aspirations. It's making a statement with your attitude, a visceral and visual language. It's about being brave enough to say, "I rock and I'm proud of it." It's about remembering who you are or, who you once were."

Translated, that means we'll be getting "premium couture" wares like hoodies and track jackets made with distressed, hand-printed, metallic foil art, hand-set crystals, and accent hand-stitching. And it doesn't stop at clothing: The line also includes perfume and motorcycles, which we are genuinely surprised Audigier hasn't hand-painted en masse and sold already.

Manny to Go to Yankees, Says Someone Who Would Know

Montauk Monster Art

Photo: Getty Images

Manny Ramirez isn’t on the Red Sox anymore, and while most of the local media was busy this morning playing up how psyched the Yankees are (see here, here, and here) that he’s out of their division, Mike Lupica took the liberty of kicking off what will probably end up being the Next Big Story of Manny-Watch 2008. Lupica ended his column today by casually dropping the following: “Next year he’ll be probably DH-ing at an even bigger [stage]: The new Yankee Stadium.” Well, that took all of twelve hours.

We understand that Lupica wants to be authoritative (probably more so than any columnist in the city), but there are, like, a million reasons the Yankees wouldn’t want to bother with Manny: They’ll have more pressing holes to fill this winter, he’s on the downside of his career, he’s batshit insane, etc. Because the Yankees have all the money, we get that they’re always going to be part of the discussion for any free agent, so we’re at peace with the fact that this will eventually be debated ad nauseam. But just saying that Manny-to-the-Yankees is “probably” going to happen, as if a reader would have to be crazy not to agree, seems forced. It’s as if Lupica wants to be the first to call it, on the slim chance that Manny does become a Yankee four months from now. If that’s the case, we’d like to go on the record and predict that Manny will sign a contract with Baltimore worth exactly $63.75 million on December 5. We’re almost certainly wrong, but man, if we’re right? That’d be sweet. —Joe DeLessio

Why Haven’t This Week’s Newsmakers Seen ‘The Dark Knight’ Yet?

Well, now that our boss has finally seen The Dark Knight, we'd assumed that no one was left on planet Earth who has not yet bought a ticket for the most important movie of 2008, the movie that will save America's economy while also teaching our businessmen how to lead. But we were wrong! It turns out that none of this week's Vulture newsmakers have yet seen The Dark Knight. Come on, people! It's August! It's not like there's anything else out! What are their foolish excuses?

Richard Griffiths: Movie theaters require shirts for admission.
David Archuleta: Too busy drinking David Cook's milkshake.
Kenny Chesney: Wants to wait for the movie to run in a theater powered by seal oil.
Michael Cera: Scoring.
Michael Madsen: Can't leave the phone in case Quentin calls.
Mike Myers: Too busy writing the scene where Austin Powers's genitals are covered with something funny. A cucumber?
David Carr: Already redeemed the memoir, now busy redeeming the human race.
Ben Silverman: Filing for unemployment.
Quentin Tarantino: Apparently attending the Swing Vote premiere.
Isaac Asimov: Dead, and soon to be rolling in grave.
Estelle Parsons: Upside down.
R. Kelly: Recording another album this week.
Snoop Dogg: Learning Tuvan throat-singing.
Terry Gilliam: Tilting at windmills.
Woodward and Bernstein: In hiding.
George W. Bush: Watching the W. trailer over and over again, cracking up.
John C. Reilly: Dancing around in underpants.
Philip Seymour Hoffman: Counting his Oscars.
Sharks: Eating you.

Billboard CD reviews: Randy Newman, David Bowie (Reuters)

Reuters - Randy Newman's shock-and-aw-shucks wit is so joyfully scathing at times on "Harps and Angels" that it's hard to believe it's been nine years since his last album John Roderick, the talky Long Winters singer who with his new bushy beard and long greasy locks resembles no one so much as Jeffrey Lebowski — the Dude, that is — introduced the song “Honest” last evening at Castle Clinton by saying, “This is how it feels to be a young woman facing some difficult decisions.” From where we were sitting alongside the stage, we noticed two girls in center front row, perhaps 13 and 16, perk up at this. And then Roderick, who is conspicuously missing a front tooth and later claimed to weigh in at “234, 235” (“But I can still fit into my junior-prom costume. I was 240 in high school” — big, big laughs), delivered, in his winsome way, the first line: “She loves the singer, every song can bring her close to tears…” Shock dawned on these girls’ faces. Him … singing … that?

And it’s difficult to explain if you haven’t heard it, but “Honest” is such a lovely and in a weird way genuine tune that we couldn’t help thinking that those girls — and, certainly, others in attendance — probably were moved by the story of a young woman warned by her mother never to fall in love with a lead singer, “whatever you do, whatever you do.” At the same time that they were, of course, bemused to bask in the presence of this man, who paired a white shirt with off-white, or perhaps just dirty, Carhartt denims, and looked like he might’ve, shit, probably, wandered into the Castle and onstage after spending a few nights on a bench in Battery Park. So for the purposes of this story, we cast aside the mother’s moral and say, yes, we came to love him there — and in our memory, at least, forged under that glorious sky, we will for evermore. —Nick Catucci

The Montauk Monster Has Competition. Sort Of.

Chinatown: The newer, Fujianese immigrants in the southern part of the hood are pro–Communist China and cheering on the Olympics, while the older immigrants in the northern part are pro-Taiwan, anti-Communist and not celebrating the games. Which makes for some tension in the nabe. [NYS]
Dumbo: The Montauk Monster is soooo July '08. Today, it's all about the, uh, Dumbo Detritus Demon crawling out of the cove at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park. [McBrooklyn]
East Village: A man is claiming to be the elder cousin of the guy trying to evict everyone at 47 East 3rd Street in order to make the whole building his mansion. And this man's written a letter to the Observer calling his little cousin a scumbag. But the letter's not confirmed. We think it's a fake — it's too damning by half, too pat in its tone. What do you think? [NYO]

Graniteville: Friday's shirtless surprise is Staten Island's Joe Colella, who grows everything including cantaloupes in his backyard. Doesn't he look like an old Italian guy impersonating a Ziegfeld girl with these giant cabbages? [SILive via Queens Crap]
Greenwich Village: The New School's big-for-the-neighborhood building, planned for 14th and Fifth and opposed by many locals, seems to have stalled, and it may end up being smaller than expected. [Villager via Curbed]
Harlem: Have you guys seen this new residential building, the Kalahari, with a façade "inspired by nomadic and tribal cultures of Africa"? It looks like some folks have moved in. [JSchumacher via Uptown Flavor]
Midtown: The Broadway Boulevard, an all-bike-and-pedestrian zone between Times Square and Herald Square, is coming along and expected to open in mid-August. Still, we're not sure about hanging out on benches, tables, and chairs in the middle of Broadway around 38th Street. That just doesn't sound so pastoral to us. [Newyorkology]

The Man in the Gray Flannel Batsuit?

Photo-illustration: Everett Bogue;
Photos: istockphoto, Courtesy of Warner Bros.

Ever since The Wall Street Journal's editorial about how The Dark Knight's Batman is actually a heroic portrait of George W. Bush — you know, the one that was, pardon the expression, Batshit insane — we've been waiting for the next overreaching columnist to employ a head-shaking Bat-metaphor. Thanks to Theo Caldwell, the president of Caldwell Asset Management, Inc., we must wait no longer!

Caldwell writes in Canada's National Post that while The Dark Knight's script and special effects and Heath Ledger are great and all, "the most astounding thing about the Dark Knight's tale is the way in which he can get other people to perform at a top-notch level." Are you ready for the Batman Executive Leadership Technique?

When, for example, our hero heads to Hong Kong to shanghai a fugitive businessman and bring him back to Gotham, the plan requires precision explosives, electronic surveillance planted by people in advance and, by the way, an airplane flying over the building at the exact right time. As everything goes off without a hitch, one wonders: What did he say at the planning meeting to get everyone to do all these jobs just right?

First of all, this is hilarious. Second of all, isn't there a whole subplot about a disloyal Wayne Industries employee who tries to sell Batman down the river? Third of all, this is totally hilarious. Batman isn't the only genius executive in disguise — the Joker, too, is a natural leader, says Caldwell. For instance, when he pulls that bank job, he manages to get everyone to wear clown masks!

Coming next week, as The Dark Knight's box office reaches stratospheric levels: "Women Are From Venus, Batmen Are From Mars." Ladies: Don't let what happened to Rachel Dawes happen to you!

A caped study in leadership [National Post]

But before we get too ahead of ourselves, let's check in with Lauren to see how she feels about it. You know, assuming she has feelings:

"Every season, I think it's the last," she says. "Right now, I think this is the last season.

"I go through phases when I’ve been filming where I wake up in the middle of the night and I think I’m being filmed," she says. "That’s when I have to take a vacation."

She also says her dad wants to come up with a "five-year-plan," whatever that means. Lauren tells Us, ''I go, 'Let's talk about my five-day plan. I don't even know that.'" Since we know your life is overflowing with difficult decisions, Lauren, we'd like to offer you our life-planning services free of charge. So we've outlined a life plan for you for the next five days and the next five years. What can we say? We're feeling generous.

The Five-Day Plan
Day 1: Come to our office and say hi. If you're feeling bold, feel free to open up about all those feelings you've been suppressing your entire life. Our unwritten motto is "Bloggers you can trust," after all.

Day 2: Go to a trendy restaurant in New York for lunch and get photographed eating something fattening. Hearing about how thin you look in person is getting old.

Day 3: Don't do anything today. Stay inside, shut your curtains, and don't get your picture taken. Contrary to what you may believe, a day without Lauren Conrad is not like a day without sunshine.

Day 4: Practice smiling. But you know, not in a fake way. Go shopping with someone you like who's not reality-TV famous and genuinely likes you for you and vice versa. That usually works for us.

Day 5: Go to an island where there are no cameras so you can focus on the five-year plan without being distracted by thoughts of how to get yourself more famous.

The Five-Year Plan
Year 1: Stop pretending you're designing your clothing line. Give credit to the girl who actually designs it and collect a little cash and face exposure by signing on to star in the campaign.

Year 2: Get off the Hills and find a boy who's not an awful hot-tempered idiot to date long-term. Someone famous, random and unexpected would be really good for your image, like Seth Rogen.

Year 3: Now that your nice boyfriend has helped you become a bajillion times more likable, you can focus on other business ventures. Why not open a Lauren Conrad Hills theme park somewhere in California? With rides like, the Speidi Coaster of Unholy Matrimony and Lauren's Tea Party. You know everyone in the whole world would pay $47.50 to get in.

Year 4: Get pregnant. Everyone loves a baby bump!

Year 5: Get married (marriage before pregnancy is so passé). Use it to jump-start a new reality show about your married life, your kids, and your new business. Yes, go back to television! Just make sure it's not on Oxygen, Lifetime, or TLC.

A Portrait of the Monster As a Young Man

Montauk Monster Art

Painting Courtesy Jacque Fabrizi

The Monster of Montauk has become so popular that he* has already spawned his own fan art. Long Island–born artist Jacque Fabrizi composed this painting of the nation's new hero and sent it along to us. In it, she imagines the monster in its younger, more alive days, when it could flop around in the waves undisturbed by surfers, vacationers, flies, Wolf Blitzer, or anybody with a stick or a camera. It's kind of lovely, isn't it? It makes you imagine what its monster life must have been like. We bet it spent its days frolicking away in the waves, warming itself in the sun, and nipping at the muscular haunches of its other monster friends. It probably ate a healthy diet of fish and plant life. Maybe it would even slip up into the dunes at night to mate with its other monster lovers.

Eh, nah. That kind of monster would have clearly washed up on Fire Island.

*You didn't see the picture of his balls? The Monster of Montauk, just like Princess Chunk, is all man, man.

cavalli to dress coke bottles

Italian Diet Coke is getting all gussied up for Milan fashion week. Roberto Cavalli has sexified the customarily clear glass containers with his signature animal prints. He said that creating looks for the bottle's curvy silhouette was a lot like making dresses for his voluptuous clientele. Of course, a Diet Coke will never ask "Do I look fat in this?"

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly sold the first pictures of their new twins for a cool $15 million to Hello magazine. Let's do the math, shall we? The typical American earns roughly $25,000 a year. That means the Brangelina tots made the equivalent of 60 people's annual income simply by being born. At least the college fund's all settled, then.

Artist Hannah Micley Hits the Snooze Button

Hannah Micley’s Savannah, Georgia (2008).Courtesy of Sasha Wolf Gallery

This mammoth bed almost rocks like a boat moored in the sun. It's photographed by Hannah Micley and is part of a group show titled "In Our Dreams," at Sasha Wolf Gallery through August 9, in which up-and-comers like Micley hang alongside innovators like Gary Winogrand and Lee Friedlander. In Friedlander's image, an old man has plonked his head on his arm for a nap at his work desk; Micley's dreamer is similarly nonplussed by her exposure. She and the bed are like happy bears in hibernation, hiding from seasonal elements. Who needs summer hours with such exhibits? —Emma Pearse

‘Project Runway’ Coda: Emily’s Line Is No Better Than Her Ruffle Dress

Emily Brandle, left, and her losing design.Photo: Courtesy of Bravo

On the most recent episode of Project Runway, Emily Brandle's awkward ruffle dress earned her the boot. Now that she's had several weeks between now and when the episode was taped to think about what she did, does she regret not making something less offensive? Of course not! She tells Entertainment Weekly:
I was shocked that I got kicked off! What were they thinking? … You know, fashion is subjective. For whatever reason, the judges and/or producers thought it was my time to go. I wouldn't change my dress. You know, I stand by it.

She explains she had originally intended for the dress to be entirely covered in ruffles but nixed that idea. Even after Tim Gunn politely expressed that he thought her dress looked kind of crappy, but more ruffles might, well, make it work:

[W]hat they don't show is that it's a 20- or 30-minute conversation that you have with Tim … So yes, I did change course after we talked, and I ended up kind of coming back to something that was simpler. I was adding more ruffles, and it just wasn't going where I wanted it to go. It wasn't jelling.

She says her Smoke & Mirrors collection, which she's been making with her business partner for a year and a half, is a testament to her talent. Let's take a look at her collection to decide if it really is, hm?

We're quite surprised these pieces earned her a spot on the show. They look like something a Jenny Humphrey would cobble together, but instead of ripping off Henri Bendel, she's going for Joyce Leslie with a dash of Frederick's of Hollywood.

betsey cartwheels into 30 years

Bjohnson

Betsey Johnson and longtime business partner Chantal Bacon kicked up their glittery heels last night at the label's Wooster Street store to commemorate three decades of girly decadence. Characters like Patrick McDonald and Julia Allison sipped pink Champagne while Bee Shaffer and Andrea Linett of "Lucky" perused rack after rack of ruffles and whimsy. The crowd of Betsey devotees and downtown rockabillies—that created the strange visual juxtaposition of tattoos and cartoon prints—noshed on tiny cupcakes, a well-stocked candy bar, and delicious tiny sliders. Unfortunately, the pink on the leopard prints wasn't the only hot thing in the boutique. (Fellow revelers in the steamy space were eyeing my paper fan even more hungrily than the thimble-sized lobster under glass offered by the waiters.) But in spite of the sweltering temps, the laughter and intermittent squeals of "I've got to have this!" surely indicate that Ms. Johnson and Ms. Bacon have another 30 fun and yes, cartwheel-filled years ahead of them.

Cherry-picked from the archive of the John Kobal Foundation in London (one of the world's top resources for Hollywood portraiture) these dramatically styled black-and-white images taken between 1920 and 1960 perfectly exemplify why Kobal was the twentieth century's preeminent authority on Hollywood photography. Among the stars included in the book are Jean Harlow, Greta Garbo, Marlon Brando, Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart, Rock Hudson, Grace Kelly, and Rita Hayworth. How times have changed.

Why Ever Would Jared Kushner Buy the Newark ‘Star-Ledger’?

Photo: Getty Images

A story in The Wall Street Journal this morning about the potential sale of the Newark Star-Ledger by the Newhouse family contained this little tidbit down at the bottom: "New York Observer owner Jared Kushner might be interested in buying the Star-Ledger if it were for sale, according to a person familiar with Mr. Kushner's thinking." Now that's interesting. Like the Observer — which was one of the first newspapers to explore allegations of corruption against Jared's father, Charles Kushner, later sent to jail — the Star-Ledger has spent a lot of ink on the Kushner family's troubles, and they've stayed on them: Just this past June, the paper was one of the only ones that reported the conviction of Charles Kushner's brother-in-law and close associate Richard Stadtmauer, for instance. So that Young Kushner is considering purchasing this paper does raise the slightest questions about what his "thinking" actually is. Is he exacting some kind of Dubya-like vengeance on people who were mean to his dad?

But that's not really fair: A lot of papers covered the trials and tribulations of Charles Kushner. Also, Jared tried to buy Newsday recently, so maybe he's just one of the rare people these days who thinks a newspaper is a good investment. That's what the folks at the Star-Ledger, who at this point are more worried about their livelihoods than their reporting freedom being curtailed, hope. "We're going through the various emotions of processing the information," Josh Margolin, a political reporter who has covered the Kushners and won a Pulitzer for his reporting on New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey's resignation, told Daily Intel today. "In the last 26 hours, we learned that the paper could be sold, that 200 people may have to leave. The world as we know it could end two months from now." Regarding the Kushners, he said, "It's a very odd place to be. You think about the Dolans buying Newsday and the difficulties they may have covering Cablevision. But then, it's good that a family bought Newsday." Basically, he concluded, these are the concessions that newspapers, if they want to continue to survive, will have to make. "It would be terrible for the planet if another newspaper ceased to exist. If the Kushner family are the people who want to keep a newspaper alive, if they really want to make a go of it, I don't see how that could be a bad thing."

David Archuleta’s First Single Premieres! Is David Cook’s Album in Trouble?

When we heard that angel-voiced American Idol runner-up David Archuleta had signed to Jive Records a couple of months back, our excitement was tempered somewhat by the news that his debut album wouldn't be released until after the one from his pitchy, balding nemesis, Idol winner David Cook. This morning, though, with still no word yet on a new record from Cook (supposedly it's coming out in November, maybe), Archuleta stopped by New York's Z100 for the radio premiere of his wonderful first single "Crush" (hear it above). While we don't have a definitive release date for Archuleta's album, the fact that Idol's producers are allowing him to promote it already sort of implies that his will come out first.

And while a runner-up's album beating the victor's to stores isn't unheard of, it usually only seems to happen when producers are trying to sweep an Idol winner under a rug (sorry, Cook, no pun intended) — Clay Aiken's record came out before Ruben Studdard's, and Chris Daughtry's was released before Taylor Hicks's. Cook is reportedly hard at work on music with songwriters from Collective Soul and Our Lady Peace (so you know it'll be good), but does this latest development mean someone behind the scenes secretly doubts its commercial viability? We're pretty sure we're not going to buy it!

Kids CD Evokes ‘Soul Train,’ and With Good Reason

There aren’t enough R&B, gospel, funk, or hip-hop albums for kids, so it’s a boon that Disney interstitial star Genevieve Goings’s laid-back, groove-heavy release includes all of the above. The alphabet song goes soul on “A.B.C. Gospel,” while numbers are taught to herky-jerky hip-hop on “One-Two One-Two-Three.” Goings's sultry voice is grown-up enough for parents, but the second disc of music videos aboard an animated soul train is fun stuff perfect for the little ones.

winehouse preens and waxes

Waxamy3

When Amy Winehouse got the waxworks treatment at Madame Tussauds earlier this week, Preen designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi found themselves tasting a little immortality, too. The wax Winehouse displayed for posterity in London is wearing their citrus-colored "Power" dress that the un-wax Winehouse wore to the Brit Awards last year, and if looks especially familiar, that's because a black version of the same dress is the one Gwyneth Paltrow is sporting in those innumerably reproduced photos from the "Iron Man" photo call in Rome this summer. Clearly, the dress was built to last. Preen fans on the lookout for the next classic frock from the brand can catch the Spring 2009 Preen show in New York this September; Bregazzi, however, won't be making the trip across the pond from London. Right around runway time, she's due to deliver a very different kind of masterpiece: She and Thornton are having a baby. More power to 'em.

Halston to Show at MoMA During Fashion Week

A look from Halston's fall '08 collection.Photo: Getty Images

After Halston lost head designer Marco Zanini and severed ties with creative consultant Rachel Zoe, we were nervous for the newly revived label. We worried it might stumble and fall into some sort of mess, the same way we worry drunk, stiletto-clad college freshman on the cobblestones of the meatpacking district might. But now it's looking more and more like those bobbles were just part of the label's getting its footing. Fashion Week Daily reports the house just announced it will show its spring 2009 collection in the heat of Fashion Week on September 9 at the Museum of Modern Art. So classy and appropriate, right? Although a new designer hasn't been named, rumor has it the collection is being finished by an in-house team and the house will make an official announcement of some sort on this matter next week. Not too shabby.

Don’t You Dare Drink Starbucks in the Lobby of 15 Central Park West

15 Central Park West

Photo: nymag.com

Architecture critic Paul Golberger probes inside 15 Central Park West today over at Vanity Fair, and while we don't learn much new about the new mega-expensive co-op building, there are some nice details to the piece. For example, the exterior "is covered entirely in limestone, more than 85,000 pieces of it," Goldberger reveals. "Covering the entire building in limestone cost a couple of million dollars more than brick would have, an amount that turned out, in the end, to be trivial — [developers] the Zeckendorfs probably made it back on the sale of one apartment." Goldberger walks readers through every element of the nouveau twenties design and then lets us know a little bit about what it's like to actually live there.
The other day, someone walked into the lobby carrying a paper coffee cup from Starbucks, and the staff gave her disapproving looks, as if the building’s high tone were so fragile that a paper coffee cup could shatter it. Many tenants are still decorating, and some of them, unwilling to take Stern’s standard kitchens and bathrooms, have gutted their brand-new apartments and are reconstructing them to their own specifications.
One owner I spoke with was less than thrilled when she discovered that the walls are made of plasterboard, which was most definitely not the way the walls were made at 740 Park Avenue, and that some of the light switches and electrical plates didn’t line up as they should. There are limits, it appears, to how completely you can fake a 1920s building in the 21st century, and behind all that limestone, this is very much a new building. She will take a year to rebuild her apartment, and then she and her husband will move in.

Ugh. You know what's the worst part about having to wait a year to move into 15 Central Park? Having to wait for the elevators with tourists to get to your residential suite in the Waldorf-Astoria.

Your Guide to Kenny Chesney’s Carbon Footprint

Photo-illustration: Everett Bogue; Photos: Getty Images

As Kenny Chesney's Poets and Pirates tour travels across the country this summer, it's important to ask the question, "What kind of impact can one bald country singer, who divorced Renée Zellweger under mysterious circumstances, have on the environment?" Well, we now have our answer down to the lightbulb, thanks to "Kenny Chesney Fun Facts," a bullet list helpfully provided to writers reviewing shows on the tour.

The list starts out simply enough with "260 tons of steel," which, since there's no further elaboration, presumably refers to Chesney himself. What follows looks like it's going to be a fairly dry accounting of the technical specs of the show — the stage is this big, the video screens are that big, there are so many miles of cable, etc. — until, suddenly, it gets good. For your perusal, Kenny Chesney Fun Facts numbers 9, 13 and 14, quoted verbatim:

"We use 5000 amps of 3 phase power to run the show. (The average home has a 200 amp main breaker. That's enough power to run a neighborhood of 25 homes with everything on all at the same time.)"
"We have 2,500,000,000 (2,500 kW or 2.5 megawatts) of generation power. This is 41,600 average household light bulbs or 150 average homes in America."
"We will consume approximately 28,000 gallons of diesel fuel over the course of the summer. This is enough to power a [sic] 18 MPG diesel car 504,000 miles — a little over a trip back and forth to the moon, or 20 time [sic] around the globe."

The intent, probably, was for reviewers to get all wow-gosh-and-golly about the massive amount of energy that goes into the show. But doesn't it come off a bit … tin-eared, perhaps? Like maybe somebody picked the exact wrong time to crow about this sort of thing? The country is in the midst of an energy crisis, gas tops four dollars a gallon, and the term "carbon footprint" is common parlance, and here we have Chesney doing something that looks an awful lot like bragging about how much energy he can expend just so you can get drunk and sing "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" in a supportive environment. —Marc Hirsh

Michelleobama5

When Michelle Obama worked the Manhattan social circuit in June, notably being the guest of an honor at a fundraiser at Calvin Klein's West Village pad, more than one rumor made the rounds about her sartorial relationship with Vogue editor at large André Leon Talley. Was he the unofficial adviser on her campaign look? Would he take her under the wings of his giant Chanel cape as he has other high profile African-American women, like Jennifer Hudson and the Williams sisters? We caught up with Talley at Michael's —his local haunt—and got the real story. "That was the first time I connected with Michelle Obama, and let me go on record saying that I have never, ever given her any advice on what to wear," he proclaimed about the event he hosted with Anna Wintour and Shelby Bryan at Klein's, which raised $1million for the Obama for America organization. "To put the record straight, I think that Michelle Obama does not need advice." He revealed that he had no involvement in choosing the Isabel Toledo gown she wore to Klein's dinner, nor did he find the $148 Donna Ricco dress, bought at her local White House/Black Market shop, which she wore to co-host "The View," but he was in full support of both choices. Elaborating on the topic, which Talley is prone to do, he added that he's most impressed with the Chicago resident's chic sophistication, à la Jackie O. "But it's not about Jackie Kennedy being a woman of privilege. She has, in many ways, taken some of Jackie's elements of simplicity, elegant restraint, three strands of bubble-gum pearls, the flip of hair, solid colors, simple lines, and clothes—and it's working for her. I think she's incredible."

A woman of substance: Actress Connie Nielsen

What makes someone decide to become an actor? It sometimes seems as if the average Hollywood star is motivated mainly by the promise of a fat pay check. Or perhaps they're drawn to the celebrity lifestyle. Maybe they crave the love of an adoring public, or perhaps they see the movies as a way to leave their mark on the world, to be immortalized on celluloid.

Sony to Pay Louis Vuitton for Past Britney, Da Brat Videos

The offending dashboard from the "Do Somethin'" video and offending artist Britney Spears.Photo: Getty Images

If we ever trademark a special pattern made from our initials, we would hire the Louis Vuitton legal team to help protect it in a heartbeat because they are on their game. The luxury company won another victory yesterday in its never-ending trademark-protection crusade, this time against Sony BMG. In a legal dispute just slightly more glamorous than LVMH's recent ones with eBay, Sony BMG has agreed to pay Louis Vuitton 100,000 euros, or $155,830. Louis Vuitton got upset with the music giant because they used its Toile Monogram and Multicolore trademarks in music videos and on CDs by Britney Spears, Ruben Studdard, and Da Brat. For example, in her "Do Somethin'" video, Britney appears driving through the clouds with her sexy girl entourage* in a pink hummer with a pink dashboard embossed with Louis Vuitton's signature pattern (which flashes on the screen for literally less than a second). "We don't make dashboards," a Vuitton spokeswoman told the Daily News. Though you can still watch the "Do Somethin' " video on YouTube (thank God), Sony BMG has agreed to cease distribution of American Idol winner Studdard's album The Return and pay Louis Vuitton an extra, undisclosed amount of cash in relation to that case.

What makes the LVMH legal team seem even more spectacular is they've already won $240,000 in the Spears and Da Brat cases over the last five years. In fact, according to our calculations, with the total winnings minus the Studdard bonus, the company can buy itself, why, 130 airport rolling bags!

*God, don't you miss her?

grand illusions at spencer brownstone

Magritte's famous surrealist painting showing a picture of a pipe with the caption "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" was not only not a pipe, it was also not just a painting. It was also a joke to make viewers aware of their willingness to suspend disbelief when looking at art. In "This Is Not a Drawing" at New York's Spencer Brownstone Gallery, three artists present works on paper that also play with our expectations about the medium. One jester is Jeff Gabel, whose graphite and colored pencil illustrations of his blog turn the generic Web template into something truly personal. As the title states,"Ceci n'est pas un dessin." That's right—instead, it's an interesting and rewarding summer show.

Are Erin Wasson’s Jewelry Designs Actually Her Own?

A Bliss Lau design (left) and Erin Wasson's Low Luv collection in Nylon.Photo: BlissLau.com, Nylon

Earlier this year, model and muse to Alexander Wang Erin Wasson launched her own jewelry line called Low Luv. The pieces consist of chains that wrap around the body and cost upwards of $1,000. Wang thought they were so cool, he even used them in his fall '08 runway show in February, right before Wasson's line launched. However jewelry designer Bliss Lau, who has been making similar body chains since 2007, claims Wasson's line is a ripoff of her Bliss line. According to Fashionista, Lau alledges that the pieces worn at Wang's show were Bliss pieces that Wasson merely recast. Scandal!

But the alleged awfulness gets worse: Lau claims that Wasson actually wore an original Bliss piece in the Nylon magazine article about her Low Luv line. And — if Lau's allegations are true — is that the body chains weren't just some of Wang's best accessories, but some of his best inspiration for his fall collection. He says in a Nylon video shot just before February Fashion Week, "A lot of this collection was inspired by holes and chains, mainly because I'm working with Erin, who's designing her own jewelry line starting with this season, and it's going to be introduced in the show. And kind of the idea of it was a lot of body chains and things that wrapped around the body." In other words, the exact concept of Lau's jewelry collection.

We've contacted Wasson's reps and are awaiting comment; in the meantime we'll be cringing.

rihanna is disturbed, but her lipstick looks fabulous

Rihannavid4

After making its exclusive, by-purchase-only debut on iTunes last week, the video for Rihanna's latest infectious single, "Disturbia," is now available for your (free) viewing pleasure on YouTube. Sexy and dance-worthy, as most offerings from Rih-Rih typically are, this video stands out in director Anthony Mandler's body of work with the pop star for its, well, disturbing tenor. "She wanted to do something really dark," makeup artist Mylah Morales reports, which apparently lent itself to an almost carnal ferocity (animal-head masks and an assortment of feathers and tusks abound, as does a set of black metallic talons, which, according to Morales, are Rihanna's own nails and fingertips, airbrushed black). The hair and makeup looks vary throughout the four-minute video, but the overwhelming image is a superimposed close-up of the CoverGirl spokeswoman's lips in a highly pigmented shade of red, rivaling something out of a Robert Palmer video. "We used MAC's Ruby Rue lipstick," Morales reveals, a small tip from the Barbados beauty's makeup bag to you.

alice + olivia, downsized

Aliceolivia2

Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet's reason for tackling the children's market is personal. "I'm having a girl in November!" she exclaims. "I thought a lot of dresses and sweaters would be adorable in miniature, and there has been such a baby boom I felt it was a good time to expand into that market." After a soft launch for spring, the 16-piece Fall collection (available at Neiman Marcus, Scoop, and Alice + Olivia boutiques) is more well-rounded, featuring itty-bitty biker bomber jackets, sweater cardigans, and tunic dresses in the designer's signature silhouettes. Beside her women's collection, she looks at tabloid tots for more inspiration. "Suri Cruise always looks fabulous," Bendet says, "and I like an edgy look on kids. Gwen Stefani's son, Kingston, is like a rock star in training." For more information, see www.aliceandolivia.com.
