"Hansika was always talented and ambitious" - Manoj Bajpai

Although he may disagree, it is no fluke that Manoj Bajpai's CV is stacked with real-life figures, including some of the most towering names like 'Bheeku Mhatre', 'Samar Pratap Singh', 'Raghavan', 'Babu' and 'Swami'. Manoj is a submissive chameleon whose own subtle, taciturn personality allows him to vanish under the skin of the person he's playing. Nor is it a coincidence that Bajpai's most renowned, iconic role - Bheeku Mhatre - is a blood curdling hoodlum, able to charm but flip the switch in a millisecond to unleash the rage-fuelled currents underneath. Off screen, Manoj is mellow and soft-spoken, pretty unusual huh! But these days, Manoj is content mixing it up between movies he does for quality (the upcoming Money Hai Toh Honey Hai), the ones he does for the bank balance (all his films) and the ones he does for friends (Sanjay Gupta's Acid Factory). And if meeting this actor in flesh is a rare privilege, over the phone is even more exclusive because he hardly ever does interviews. Bollywood Hungama's Devansh Patel gets this rare exclusive of an actor who winches his films up several notches with performances that packs in charm, determination, eccentricity and humour. Versatility is just a word but eventually what counts is the effort and the choices one makes Your career has not only given you an opportunity to be a part of successful films but all some spectacular roles like in Tamanna, Satya, Shool, Kaun, Aks, Pinjar and Swami which will be most remembered for Manoj Bajpai's versatility. Any comments? This has been a very conscious effort in choosing the films that I wanted to do as an actor. Versatility is just a word but eventually what counts is the effort and the choices one makes. Money Hai Toh Honey Hai is your first role where you are seen doing full-fledged comedy from frame one and what a 'U turn' for Ganesh too. Was it a difficult choice for both of you? It wasn't a difficult choice for Ganesh but because of his conviction in me and the film, I agreed to do this film. Our friendship started with Swami, he always wanted to make Swami as his first film, and after that Ganesh felt very emotional about me being in Money Hai Toh Honey Hai and I just went with the flow. For me as well, it wasn't a difficult decision. Money Hai Toh Honey Hai brings out a message that together you can win the world. You are the one of the senior actors in MHTHH. Does that make the film extra special? It's a unique film because of so many other factors. It's Ganesh's way of making a comedy film, it's completely different from all the other comedy films being churned out from the industry. MHTHH's comedy is just not senseless, it's not just slapstick but the film's comedy comes more from the characters and their circumstances. MHTHH's comedy is the struggle of these five losers who want to do something with their life. Are you trying to say that MHTHH is going to give out a meaningful message? Yes. It brings out a message that together you can win the world. Ganesh wanted me to be a part of MHTHH, he dragged me out of my bed, and the next thing I knew was I was flying to Mauritius. Did you go through any research or study for your role because you haven't done any physical comedy before? Ganesh did not give me enough time to prepare for this role. This role came to me in November 2007 and the crew were about to leave for Mauritius. I was nursing my shoulder injury and was in no physical condition to accept any role. I did not work for the entire 2007. Somehow, Ganesh wanted me to be a part of MHTHH, he dragged me out of my bed, and the next thing I knew was I was flying to Mauritius. We've also heard recently that your best pal Sanjay Gupta is praising you left right and centre for your look in his next film Acid Factory. This look has happened because we wanted to do something drastically different with my character. It is not something that is a part of our imagination but it has a lot to do with the character also. My role is very child like, loyal and quite unpredictable. Sanjay Gupta is somebody who is hell bent on giving me such a role. His conviction for me is hundred percent and I'm just going by his conviction and vision. I've already asked this question to Hansika but it now gets passed on to you. What were your reactions when you saw Hansika, the same small girl with whom you acted in Jaago nearly three years ago? Wow! Hansika was playing Raveena's daughter in the film Jaago. But the first time I saw her as a kid I knew that she would grow into a heroine. I somehow could see that in her behavior on and off sets. Even though she was just a 13-year-old girl, she wanted to do very well in her career. This is just the beginning. She is talented, ambitious and wants to grow big fast. Even though Hansika was just a 13-year-old girl, in her Jaago days she always wanted to do very well in her career. Actors turn directors, choreographers turn directors too. Who else is left to take on direction? Isn't all this becoming a trend now? All this is a natural progression. You can't stop it. Farah Khan and Ahmed Khan turned to direction. These people are always dealing with the camera angles and choreography is just another part of the story line. All these people are experts when it comes to techniques and portraying emotions. So if you go by Ganesh's first film, all the things I've just said would make sense. There are no set rules for direction. The name Manoj Bajpai is associated with quality cinema. Is that what we will see from Manoj Bajpai in the future as well? Definitely. I am made in such a way that I don't like many of the offers that come by and it becomes very difficult for me to work for 365 days a year. You can call me lazy or a choosy person, however it may suit you, but I have never given more than three releases in one year. Last year, it was 1971, Swami and Dus Kahaniyaan. This year you will see me in two films, Money Hai Toh Honey Hai and Acid Factory. Govinda is a superstar. Both of us got along very well with each other. Both admire each other's work; so the chemistry was evident on the sets and will be evident on the screens. Brief us a bit about your interactions with your co-stars in MHTHH and who do you think will steal both, Honey and Money by the end of the film? Govinda is a superstar. Both of us got along very well with each other. Both admire each other's work; so the chemistry was evident on the sets and will be evident on the screens too. I know Aftab since his Mast days and he is a versatile actor. MHTHH will prove it yet again. Celina is a fantastic person and very obedient. Hansika, as I said is a very talented, hard working and an ambitious girl. But what is going to surprise people is Upen Patel's track 'Awara' in the film. Ganesh's choice of Upen works wonders in the track and then Govinda takes it to another level. So how far do you think these newcomers can go? You are a senior, veteran, and a vastly experienced actor. Do you give any advice to freshers like Upen and Hansika? I try to create an atmosphere, which is congenial and comfortable for them. It's helping them in a way but you can call it a bit selfish too. I want my scene to be fantastic and if the actor is a newcomer who is nervous, that will not help me in any way. Therefore, I have to make things very comfortable for them. Can you recall any funny moments while filming this movie? When you're doing a comedy film, each and every moment becomes very funny because all of us were making each other laugh. I remember a moment when Govinda and I couldn't stop laughing and it became very difficult for Ganesh Acharya to start the shoot. The moment he said 'Action', we would fall down laughing. From all the films you've done so far, I'd rate Tamanna, Satya and Shool as your best three. What about you? Pinjar and Aks are my favorites and also 1971. I think it somewhere tops the list. According to so many army people, it is the best army film ever made. That was the biggest compliment, which came to us. 1971 did not boast of a great starcast but it did boast of great quality. Pinjar and Aks are my favorites and also 1971. I think it somewhere tops the list. What's important for you - box office success or critical acclaim? Most of the actors in our industry don't care about the critics. Critics, I think, are the people most unaware of the making process of any film. They are intoxicated by the power of the pen. They have their own agenda's. A little bit of box office matters so that you have the freedom to choose and work the way you want to work but at the end of the day what's important is that if the quality of cinema fails, you fail. One Friday the box office success is there and the other Friday it's gone. I have a sense of rhythm. I used to dance when I was in theatre. Describe your role in this film. I play a loser whose name is Lalabhai Bhadoriya. He is from U.P. He is somebody who wants to become a millionaire overnight and wants to start his own business. But at the same time, he is the biggest optimist in the world. He doesn't consider any crisis as crisis but for him it's the experience that counts. Bhadoriya hates manipulation and that is why my character and Govinda's is always at loggerheads. How did you manage to shake a leg Manoj? It's not difficult at all. I have a sense of rhythm. I used to dance when I was in theatre. I've done a semi classical dancing course. So everything is there. I don't dance unnecessarily. If it is required, I'll do it and make sure that it's not me who is dancing but Bhadoriya. Any message for your fans who are looking forward to see the talented Manoj Bajpai after a long sabbatical? I love my fans and just want to appeal to them that they should see quality films and support quality films. If they keep on supporting commercial films, only commercial films will be made. Thus, quality will take a back seat. Love you all.

Sachin Khot's surprise birthday bash on the sets of Ugly Aur Pagli

One of the most looked forward movies of this year is Ugly Aur Pagli starring Mallika Sherawat and Ranvir Shorey in lead roles. In fact after watching the promos, one surely gets the feeling that the cast and crew must have had a ball of a time shooting for this quirky comedy. Mallika Sherawat and Ranvir Shorey even celebrated director Sachin Khot's birthday on the sets of the film. After a long day of drooling schedule, the entire team was so tired and worn out that everyone just went back to their respective rooms to crash in their bed. However, debutante director Sachin Khot didn't exactly know what was in store ahead. After the pack up when Sachin was finally resting, the cast and crew decided to crash in to his room and throw a surprise party for him. Mallika, Ranvir along with others like Rangita Pritish Nandy got cake and gifts for him and danced the night on the chartbuster song 'Talli'. Everyone ate, drank and made merry the whole night so much that everyone was actually talli by the time the celebrations finished. Sachin still can't forget the incident, "It was a very exhausting day, we were shooting continuously since 5 in the morning till 11:30 in the night. As soon as I entered my room and was ready to sleep, I heard a loud bang at the door of my room. When I opened the door, I was surprised to see my entire cast and crew standing at the door to wish me. It was a very sweet gesture by them. I always celebrate my birthday with my family and closed ones. Though this time I was not with them, I didn't really miss them because of the beautiful team I had with me, we all had actually become like a family. We all partied till 2:30 in the morning. But what surprised me the most was that though everyone was awake till late night, they were back on the sets next morning on the decided time." Must say, the Ugly Aur Pagli team surely knows how to work and have good fun, both at the same time.

Sonu Nigam's 'Rafi Resurrected' tour in UK

Last week Sonu Nigam was with his new album 'Rafi Resurrected' on tour in UK. He was accompanied by the worldwide acknowledged and award winning City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) with its conductor Michael Seal. The grand finale of the tour took place on July 20th in London Coliseum which was completely sold out. In front of the mostly Indian audience and supported by the female singer Gunjan Singh, Sonu Nigam sang 16 songs of the highly adored Indian singer Mohammad Rafi, who passed away in 1980. Along with the great 75-piece symphony orchestra Sonu Nigam enthused the whole audience. Many of them have never before attended to a symphony concert and came only to listen to the old classical Rafi songs. But even the most sceptical Rafi fans got convinced by the outstanding performance of the singer and the orchestra and showed their enthusiasm by a thunderous applause during and a non-ending standing ovation at the end of the show. Sonu Nigam, who is a dedicated Rafi fan since his childhood, was quite nervous before the concert. For him it was an extra-ordinary honour to take part on this project and to be considered as the singer for the album and the tour. Normally adding his own values to the songs, this time Sonu Nigam stuck very closely to the originals, which was highly appreciated by the audience. At the beginning of the concert, the musicians of the orchestra and audience were standing up from their seats and had a minute of silence in remembrance of Mohammad Rafi. This concert tour was not only something special, but also very unique; never before Indian classical music was newly-arranged by and for a Western symphonic orchestra and performed along with an Indian singer. The huge success of the three-city-tour in UK motivates SAREGAMA, as the organizer of the tour, to think about continuing it in Europe or even worldwide. The Berlin Philharmonie Hall (home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) might be considered as one of the potential extended tour stops.

''I don't believe in partying'' - Himesh, on his 33rd birthday

It has been more than a year since his debut film as an actor, Aap Kaa Surroor, saw a theatrical release and turned out to be a smash hit! Ever since then, Himesh Reshammiya has been working non-stop on his acting assignments, so much so that even as he turns 33 today, he is busy on the sets shooting for the film Kajraare. What's the birthday boy doing in Jordan while shooting for a film when instead he may have well opted to party? "Why do you sound so surprised", Himesh questions back, "I have always been like this, especially on special occasions. I like to work on my birthdays as well since this is one resolution I have stuck to throughout my professional career. I don't believe in partying when I could instead use that time in working hard." In Jordan for the shooting of Kajraare (which is produced by Bhushan Kumar and directed by Pooja Bhatt), Himesh Reshammiya is clearly enjoying every day that he is facing the camera. His Karzzzz is carrying great vibes as well (it is red hot in the trade circles) while there are many other films in different stages of production. "That's all the more reason why I should be spending each and ever minute carefully", exclaims Himesh, "I have to continue working harder in the current year as well as the next year because I would he having as many as 5 films of mine releasing. There is Karzzzz as well as Kajraare, A New Love Ishtory, Mudh Mudh Ke Na Dekhh Mudh Mudh Ke and Hey Gujju. I can't afford to relax." Any silent prayer that he is offering to God on his birthday? "I have immense faith in God and continue to pray that each and every film of mine turns out to be a huge hit", says Himesh, "Everyone around me has truly blessed me and that's the reason why I have achieved so much in life." What's the resolution going forward? "To be a better human being", Himesh is quick to exclaim, "I request all my fans to bless me and here in Jordan, on this special occasion, I pray to God for the well being of each and every fan of mine. Coming back on the movie front, while Karzzzz is all set to arrive in the month of October, the music (which is carrying tremendous reports) is expected to be out on stands towards late August.

The theatrical trailer of 'Singh is Kinng' is simply breath-taking!

Click above for more stills Spectacular -- that's the right word to describe the two-and-a-half minute theatrical trailer of SINGH IS KINNG, which will be out in theatres in a couple of days from now. Believe me, we haven't seen something like this in a long, long time. Any promo should give the viewer a feel of the film and that's what this trailer does. It's not a mindless comedy, with a few comic thrown in for effect, you realize this at the very outset. SINGH IS KINNG is the keenly awaited movie of the season and the promo more than justifies the hype surrounding the movie. The trailer opens with Sonu Sood's character taking court of his kingdom in Australia, then breaks into a Hollywood style action sequence, followed by Punjab da puttar Akshay Kumar staging an entry. He's on a quest to bring Sonu Sood back home and ends up in a detour to Egypt's exotic locations where he encounters Katrina Kaif. And from there he moves on to his journey in Australia. There's more to follow: Breath-taking action scenes [in fact, never seen before] picturized over the Australian skyline and also in the sea. The action is at par with any Hollywood film and the locales are jaw-dropping. Interspersed with great music and colourful costumes, this promo packs in so much in those couple of minutes. Note the funny one-liner by Akki in the end, it leaves you with a smile on your face. If the trailer is an indicator of things to follow, expect a hurricane called SINGH IS KINNG to arrive on August 8.

The Unforgettable Tour Diary - Day 3 - Thodi Masti, Thoda Khaana and Lots of Sona

After two back to back shows that met with a fantabulous response (and in the process tired all the stars), it was a day for some relaxation. Since 'The Unforgettable Tour' moves to LA from Trinidad (with the next show being scheduled for 26th July), it gave a 3 days break for everyone to chill out! - Bachchans along with Riteish Deshmukh and Preity Zinta left for LA earlier than Vishal and Shekhar. They caught on the afternoon flight from Trinidad to LA via Miami and reached late in the night. Even though it was a day which involved some extensive traveling, it was still better than the aggressive show of which they were all a part of in the nights before. However, for the next couple of days, they are looking at chilling out in the city of LA before hitting the stage once again on 26th July. - Meanwhile, Vishal (who is also accompanied by his wife) and Shekhar made the best use of the time available. They, along with some of the key members from the band, decided to stay on for an extra day in Trinidad and in the process explore the city. - After catching up with some well deserved rest, Vishal and Shekhar went out in the local market and tried out some delicacies. Since it was a local market with quite a few individuals there belonging to Indian origin, it was a homely environment for everyone involved. Locals knew the composer duo everywhere they went and demonstrated their awareness about Hindi songs by singing a few lines. This was surprising though since from the language perspective, not many actually understand a word of Hindi! - Once a musician, always a musician. It was irresistible for them not to pick up some 'desi' Trinidad music. Soon there was a huge collection of 'soca' music which was added to their bags. What is 'soca' music? Well, it is just like calypso music, though on speed with some high energy thrown in. Sounding quite cool with a unique flavor to it, the music has enthralled the composers. Would they be adding on this sound in one of their upcoming soundtracks? Well, let's wait to hear more about that! - Talking about the music, apparently SaReGaMa is one of the most popular Indian shows out there in Trinidad. It has been widely observed that no one misses a single episode of the reality music show and it is almost a ritual for the locals to be seated in front of the TV screens the moment curtains are off the show! - After coming back to hotel at 4 PM, it was time to hit the pool. Though it seemed fun till 7 PM, exhaustion set in by the time everyone had their dinner and were ready to hit the bed. It was time to stretch legs once again since everyone is required to catch a flight next day afternoon to LA! - Talking about dinner, the stars were treated to an Indian restaurant by the name of 'Apsara'. True to its name, the restaurant did boast of beautiful ambience and layout. Touted as one of the better Indian restaurants in Western hemisphere, its food reminded everyone of the flavor available in Mumbai or Delhi. It tasted even more delicious since it was after a long wait of 5 days that stars could dig their teeth into something Indian! - Meanwhile Shekhar was busy fighting flu! Though he was running temperature for last couple of days, he was brave enough to hit the stage and come up with a rollicking performance. Even as it seemed that the exhaustion would get the better of him, he didn't take a step back at any juncture and made sure that flu wasn't given any undue importance. - Last one heard, Shekhar was getting better. And why not? After all there is a screening of The Dark Knight awaiting the entire cast of 'Unforgettable'. Tomorrow, all of them would be chilling out by getting together for the screening of this 'Batman' flick which is breaking records all over. Close to 25 people (including all the celebrities) are expected to get together in a huddle and cheer along the superhero who has already taken the world by a storm! Well, even though the superhero may be creating quite some euphoria worldwide, the streets of LA are expected to be set ablaze the moment 'The Unforgettable Tour' hits the city! Stay tuned!

Aamir unplugged

Aamir Khan is going through the best phase, professionally. "No one can predict which way the pendulum will swing, before a film releases. But JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA has fared beyond my expectations. It's a JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA wave right now, like it was when BOBBY had released. The euphoria was also witnessed during QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, MAINE PYAR KIYA and KAHO NAA… PYAAR HAI. I only wish Chachajaan [late Nasir Husain] was alive to share the happiness. He was very close to Imran," Aamir tells me as we meet again for a heart-to-heart conversation. Read on… it's a 'Bollywood Hungama' EXCLUSIVE. With Imran's debut vehicle proving a major hit, is Aamir guiding his nephew how to go about in his career? "I would never do that. It's important to take your own decisions. You must learn to walk without crutches. Right from the start of my career, I took my own decisions… I made mistakes, but those were my mistakes. I think, I've learnt more from my failures than hits and I would advice Imran the same," Aamir states. But a number of people feel that if one wants to sign Imran, it has to be via Aamir. True? "Yeah, that's what everyone feels. In fact, a number of people do call up, enquiring about Imran, but I tell them, 'Yeh lo number, Imran ko khud phone karo'," he laughs. While on JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA, Aamir has incorporated a song that was deleted from the final version. "It's my favorite number, but Mansoor, Abbas and I took a call jointly. We felt the song was only making the film lengthier. But since the results are out, the song has been added in its third week. Initially, we thought of retaining it for just one week. But looking at the feedback, we may stretch it to three weeks. However, let me add, the song will not be a part of the final cut in the DVD. It will be featured in the unseen portions," Aamir divulges. With GHAJINI complete and slated for release in November, Aamir will begin shooting for Rajkumar Hirani's film from August onwards. "It's called 3 IDIOTS. We didn't get the title [IDIOTS]… I am looking forward to working with Madhavan and Sharman Joshi [the RANG DE BASANTI team]. Kareena is now doing the film," the soft-spoken actor states. The topic moves on to his next project. Has he thought of his next directorial venture? "Not yet! I haven't started looking for stories either. Earlier, I was busy with GHAJINI, then the release of JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA took most of my time," Aamir confesses. But the buzz is, Aamir intends casting Bachchan Sr. in his film. "I was at a loss of words when Mr. Bachchan said that he would love to work in a film directed by me. He's my favorite actor. It would be a privilege to direct him, but like I said, I haven't zeroed on a subject yet," Aamir says. What about DELHI BELLY? Reportedly, the film will be made in English, not Hindi. "That's true! We are targeting at the global audience. I don't want it to be a bilingual [Hindi, English]. We tried that earlier [MANGAL PANDEY], but it didn't work," he says. With Ranbir Kapoor not part of the project anymore, will Imran step in? "Ranbir couldn't do the film due to date hassles. As for Imran, let's see. We haven't taken a call yet," Aamir states.

Karan Johar posts details about his upcoming films in his latest blog

'Films and more films'; that is his new pledge. Keeping himself occupied, Karan Johar finally decides to let the cat out of the bag and reveals the five new films Dharma Productions is busy with. His latest blog, www.mynameiskaran.com has an update on the upcoming film projects from his production house. Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, and Priyanka Chopra starrer Dostana is all ready to hit the screens on November 14. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, the film's music is composed by Vishal-Shekhar, which would release on September 30. Karan is also producing a film, which is tentatively titled, Wake Up Sid! The film would be directed by 24-year-old Ayan Mukherji (Kajol and Rani's cousin). Karan informs that the film is a 'coming of age meets a slice of life' kind of film. The film has an unusual pair of Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma and would release in September 2009. Next up is Rensil D'Silva's (Rang De Basanti's famed screenplay writer) directorial debut film, which apparently is a thriller with global terrorism as its backdrop. The principal cast comprises of Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi. The film would be ready for release by the autumn in 2009. Karan's debut film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which is being adapted into an animation film, titled Koochie Koochie Hota Hai would be Dharma Productions' first animation film. The film will be co-produced by Prana (a seasoned animation house). However, this animation film, which has a plot similar to K2H2, will be picturized on animals and the animal kingdom. The core love story is between three dogs, and the supporting cast has roosters, bears, pigs, cats, and many others from the barn. Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani essay the voices for 'Rocky', 'Angie', and 'Tina' respectively, (minor tweak on the original names). The potential release date is late summer of 2009. Last but not the least is My Name Is Khan, which goes on floors in November this year and would be shot at length in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, and Mumbai. The film is scheduled to release by end of next year. Karan adds that, "the film at heart is a love story. At the soul of it, it makes a social comment, and at the whole of it, it's a human triumph tale." Five films in the making, Karan Johar definitely has a lot going on. Keep it up KJo.

"I had great fun shooting for Money Hai..." - Sophie Choudry

Download image as wallpaper Money Hai Toh Honey Hai, the comedy releasing this week, has a surprise element in the form of Sophie Chodhry. Though this Ganesh Acharya directed film has Celina Jaitley and Hansika as the leading ladies with Esha Deol in a special song and dance appearance, Sophie too has been added to the star cast so as to up the glam quotient of Money Hai Toh Honey Hai. Confirms multifaceted Sophie who has been active on number of fronts like music videos, VJ, host and of course acting, "Makers of the film had requested that I be a part of the film. I couldn't say no since there are quite a few reputed names involved. I consented to play a part where I will be sharing screen space with Govinda." How was it working for the film? It must have been a picnic considering Money Hai Toh Honey Hai is an out and out comedy with ample fun moments. Also, she wasn't quite required to don the responsibility of being one of the leads. "It indeed was great fun and I got a chance to interact with lot of interesting people on the sets of the film", reveals Sophie, "I went to shoot in Mauritius and it indeed was holds-no-bar fun out there. Even though it was a short stint, I came back with fond memories." What else is happening beyond Money Hai Toh Honey Hai? "Currently, all my energies are focused on Daddy Cool. It is one 'dhamaal' film which I am doing with Indra Kumar. In fact this week itself, I would be shooting for a fantastic number. The film also stars Sunil Shetty, Aashish Chaudhary, Aarti Chhabria and Tulip Joshi", says Sophie excitedly. Talking about her upcoming films, Sophie goes on to add, "Of course there is Alibaug about which I am hugely excited since the time I started shooting for it. Freeze is progressing well too. Overall, I am happy with the way things are looking up for me. Every year has played a good role in my progression as an actor and with the bunch of films I have in hands, it is only going to get better in months to come."
