John and Nagesh held a special screening of Aashayein for their parentsDownload Aashayein wallpapers One film that is really close to actor John Abraham's heart is Nagesh Kukunoor's Aashayein. Both John and director Nagesh Kukunoor have always said that they want to dedicate this special film to their parents and their teachings of Hope. Hence, it came as no surprise when the duo organized a special screening of Aashayein for their parents recently at a preview theatre in Hyderabad. For John Abraham, it was indeed an emotional moment as his parents always stay away from filmdom and this was the first time that they asked him to show them the film. What's more, the day the screening was held, it was Nagesh's parents' wedding anniversary and so impressed were Mama and Papa Kukunoor with the film that they were heard saying that it was best gift they could have got. As for John, he too seemed all excited at the screening, "Aashayein is not just any film for me. It is special in more than one way. When I was shooting for the film, I was going through the worst phase of my life. It has been a journey for me and is the most challenging role of my career so far", said the hunk All in all, an enjoyable evening was had by one and all.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 21 Jul 2008 | 4:11 pm Guess Who this Bollywood actress is!Ever wondered what is the difference between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bollywood Hungama? The Unforgettable Stars comprising of the Bachchan trio, Preity Zinta, Riteish Deshmukh and Vishal Shekhar were warm-heartedly greeted by a jam-packed audience who flew in from different parts of the Caribbean to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime extravaganza. - The magic of Indian Cinema came alive at the Queens Park Cricket Club where fans queued up since the afternoon to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars. In the first show at Toronto which also saw Akshay Kumar getting the house down with antics, the response was exhilarating which only paves the way for days to follow. Read on to know the highlights of the big day! - Before the show began and the stars descended on stage, Amitabh Bachchan got all the lead performers together for a prayer. It wasn't aimed at wishing something from God; instead it was a get-together where Big B took a resolve from all to go all out and entertain the audience. He said, "We are here to entertain everyone and it is our responsibility that all who come here go home happy. Let's give our best and make sure that we as well as audience have a great time out there!" No wonder, it touched the hearts of all the youngsters! - Rogers Center, venue for the show at Toronto, was jam packed with 10000 people even before first of the stars arrived on stage. No wonder, by the time the event had reached its peak, organizers had to make space for close to 5000 more! - A renowned local band kick started the event and warmed up the audience with their performance. No one was complaining though since it was only acting as a good enough appetizer for the main course to follow. There were cheers all around and though thousands out there were getting impatient and restless to have a dekko at the stars, it was only adding on to the euphoric mood at Toronto. - The wait was finally over with Riteish Deshmukh arriving first on stage. Amidst all the fireworks and magnificent lights, he simply banged the stage out there and took the crowd along with him with his performance on the title song from Cash! This was followed by a few more songs which included the chartbuster track 'Ae Chori' [Cash] and eventually ended with the super hit song from Heyy Babyy. Crowd loved what Riteish did and if the kind of reception that the young actor received was any indication, there was clearly a lot more in store from the event to follow! - It was quite stupendous in the manner Abhishek Bachchan announced his arrival. Emerging from the middle of the crowd with spotlights following his ascent to the stage, it was an ear-shattering response with Junior Bachchan marking his arrival with the song 'Dhadak Dhadak' [Bunty Aur Babli]. Even as he performed solo for this song where he only had background dancers for company, he didn't mind it all as he occupied the stage at all corners. - Aishwarya Rai did what she is best at. She turned the crowds crazy with her 'Krazzy Kiya Re' act followed by her portion of 'Dhoom Again', the title track from Dhoom 2. 'Dil Lagana' and a few other songs followed too and by the time she was through with her performance, the word of mouth had spread amongst the crowds that this would indeed be one 'unforgettable' tour! - To give audience some respite from all the heat being generated, the organizers also wisely incorporated a small 3 minute segment on the evil of global warming. Mixing message with entertainment, the event made sure that it carried a lot more depth to it than being simply frivolous. - As the event started peaking up, crowds were swelling by hundreds. Barricades were being broken and so high was the crowd on energy that security urged stars to request audience to remain patient and just enjoy the show! - Composer duo of Vishal and Shekhar saw a huge entry to their name with a huge screen displaying a film on their work. The moment the men behind Om Shanti Om and recent blockbuster Bachna Ae Haseeno arrived on stage, pyrotechnics were in full force as a deafening sound preceded the band which played numbers like 'Aankhon Mein Teri', 'Dard De Disco' and 'Deewangee'. It was a maddening crowd out there as Vishal-Shekhar continued to enthrall the audience with one chartbuster after another, especially the most recent one being the title track from Bachna Ae Haseeno. Post this; they left the stage for Amitabh Bachchan to make his much awaited entry. - Big B's mere presence on stage made all the difference as the reception he got from the crowds was unprecedented. He didn't come up with anything flashy or dramatic; he merely walked the stage and acknowledged the crowds, all of which resulted in a frenzy. A near 15000 crowd was unstoppable from this point on as Big B began LIVE singing of yesteryear songs like 'Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar' [Kaalia], 'Dekha Naa' [Bombay To Goa], title track [Don] and 'Rang Barse' [Silsila]. Last heard, Vishal-Shekhar are looking at incorporating two more songs - 'Mere Angne Mein' and 'Iir Beer Phatte' - in the Trinidad show! - Akshay Kumar was supposed to be making the much awaited 'special appearance' into the show and he didn't disappoint thousands who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the superstar. Powerful as ever on stage, he performed to the Snoop Dogg version of the title track from Singh Is Kinng. This time around he also had RDB for company and together they made sure that the thump wasn't missing for a single moment while Akshay occupied the stage. - Highlight of the show was a cheeky number that Akshay played on an unsuspecting girl! He picked her from the audience, asked for permission from her grandma, proceeded to take her to a large red bed (on stage of course) and sung 'Bheege Honth Tere' [Murder]. Not just that, he also (hold your breath) gifted her some exclusive lingerie and a pair of high heels! No wonder, the city of Toronto is still smiling!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 21 Jul 2008 | 2:56 pm The Unforgettable Tour Diary - Days preceding the showClick above for more stills The much hyped 'The Unforgettable Tour' is currently on and we at Bollywood Hungama would be giving a day by day account of all the fun and happenings. Of course, there are guest appearances (Akshay Kumar, Madhuri Dixit, Shilpa Shetty) galore too that add spice to the proceedings. Here we give an account of all the hype and hoopla which followed the moment all the stars landed in Toronto, the first city where they were slated to perform in this worldwide tour. - At the Toronto airport itself, there were dozens of fans who waited patiently for the stars to descend from the airport lobby. As expected, it was a hysterical response with crowd greeting the performers with hysterical cheering! - Amitabh Bachchan wasn't upset but highly amused with British Airways. Reason? They had misplaced close to a dozen suitcases belonging to the Bachchan family. Apart from regular stuff, the suitcases also contained the costumes which Bachchans were required to be wearing during press conferences as well as the shows. While Big B did quip that his informal attire in the press conference was courtesy British Airways, many were left wondering whether he would also go ahead and sue the airlines. - Press conference itself was a grand affair because regardless of the event being outside Mumbai, close to 400 odd media people were present in full strength while bombarding the group with questions. Arrangements were impeccable as each of the stars was seated on exclusive sofa sets with media going around the hall and given an opportunity to interact with each of them on an exclusive basis. Neat! - Security provided to the stars was world class with each of them enjoying a personal security guard for company at every move. Powered by walkie-talkies and all the associated gadgets, these guards were themselves pretty cued about the people for whom they were responsible for the security and couldn't help smiling away with the big moment they found themselves in! - Gifted with a VVIP treatment, the stars have a Limo to their disposal. Not just that; the drive across different venues is 'pucca filmy' with the Limos being protected at both ends by a couple of bikes each which make sure that the road ahead is kept clear! Kya style hai! - Big B also ensured that no one from the technical team ever get hassled by any stray incidence. When there was some problem with some equipments, resulting in an engineer getting harassed, he comforted him and made sure that he tried rectifying the problem with a cooler head. From someone who has seen the industry and been a part of countless shows for decades, Amitabh Bachchan was chilled out and didn't let any minor mishap hamper the spirit of the team. - Last one heard, Amitabh Bachchan continued his reputation of being a trail blazer when it came to preparations before the show! Hours after landing in the city and a brief rest later, he was there in the rehearsal hall and pepped up everyone else to come up with their best. He rehearsed non-stop with everyone else and didn't show any signs of fatigue whatsoever! No wonder, the youngsters were left wondering about the spirit and never-say-die spirit of the man who is well into his 60s! - Vishal and Shekhar were left amazed when they visited the stadium to have a dekko at the arrangements before the show. Grandeur was simply surreal as they realized that the stage set there was as tall as 5 stories! The venue (Rogers Centre) has a capacity to accommodate more than 15000 patrons and was already sold out before the kick start of the show!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 21 Jul 2008 | 2:53 pm Mani to taste OrangeKalabhavan Mani, who is experiencing a downward trend in his career, finally has something to look forward to. Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 21 Jul 2008 | 10:46 am Exclusive Movie Review: Kabootar{Produced by Anubhav Sinha, Kabootar was recently screened at Osian's Cine Fan, New Delhi, and won tremendous applause for itself. This writer was amongst the select few invitees who were invited for the film's screening. Directed by debutant Maqbool Khan, the film brings with it some eclectic mix of entertainment and social messaging which reflects the not-so-apparent state of youngsters in small towns. Here is presenting an EXCLUSIVE REVIEW of the film, only on Bollywood Hungama} "In big cities, 'chauraha' (crossroad) is a place from where four roads lead to different destinations. On the other hand, in small towns, 'chauraha' is a place where people from four different destinations meet" - This is what practically summarizes the feel and texture of Kabootar which tells the tale of four youngsters in their late teens who come together on one such crossroad, only to find a premature end to their journey. No wonder, the film's punch line reads - "If they hadn't been friends...They might have still been alive." Debutant director Maqbool Khan sets his cards right at the very onset of the film. He doesn't take time in establishing his four characters - Jeetu (Ankur Khanna), Irshaad (Harsh Lunia), Prabal (Vishal Thakkar) and Sharafat (Nikhil Yadav) - all in their teens, who meet in a small town from Rajasthan called Dhaulpur. Set in noir genre, with Jeetu taking the audience through the journey of these boys who eventually become friends after chance encounters and some stray fights, Kabootar is a motif which represents the exploitation of wayward youth in the hands of a local Mafioso Bhadauria (Govind Namdeo). The man creates his own army of soldiers who are willing to kill people for a few thousand rupees and a bottle of beer sans any remorse. He drives them emotionally, calls them his own and later disposes them off when they become too big for the shoes which were in the first place provided by him. Led by Prabal and followed by Irshaad, Jeetu too becomes a part of the team which works for Bhadauria even though Sharafat acts as the voice of conscience. They start with trivial battles, threaten a few when the going gets tough, become quite prevalent in Dhaulpur even as the existing erstwhile 'kabootar' gang (Brijesh, Keshav) start feeling threatened and even commit murders without any sense or purpose. Most of them being school drop outs, for them it is a game of proving their worth and loyalty to the man who spoils them with a reason. High on booze, women, power and sheer immaturity, Jeetu, Irshaad, Prabal and Sharafat do enjoy the moments they spend on the 'chauraha', only to see it all being snatched away in a jiffy once their master feels that as a 'kabootar', they had flown enough! Young Maqbool Khan surely knows the art of story telling. And he demonstrates that as a filmmaker he has set out on telling a story which doesn't quite follow the stereotype. And at places where he does feel that avoiding a stereotype is impossible, he unabashedly admits to it. Picture the scene where the four kids are sitting at a rooftop and looking at the town of Dhaulpur below them. When one of them comments that he feels like a king of the town, the other is soon to quip - 'Haan mere Bhikhu Mhatre'! It is such tongue in cheek humor which dilutes this 'violence-every-10-minutes' film which Kabootar is in its 120 minutes duration! Tussles, brawls, bloodshed is prevalent throughout the course of the movie and along with action director Javed, Maqbool Khan stuns in making it all realistic and real-life. When blood drips off a boy's face, it is not akin to what one associates with Shah Rukh Khan from a Baazigar or a Karan Arjun. Instead it is what you may have seen in reality on a roadside fight. Also, proceedings turn really brutal when certain sequences like these lead to a churn-in-a-stomach. Watch out for the blood-filled climax which is certainly not for the weak hearted! In a (successful) attempt to keep the proceedings real, yet entertaining, Maqbool also takes a hold-no-bar approach when it comes to his actors mouthing expletives. Practically every conversation has a character or two speaking the language which though would be common on the streets but would definitely raise eyebrows when heard in a film. If you thought you had heard and seen enough of it in films like Bandit Queen or Satya or Omkara then watch out for Kabootar! One can bet that if cleared through censors in entirety, the dialogues would create quite a stir after the film's screening. Talking about the film's dialogues (by Anil Chaudhary), they carry a rustic and local flavor to them which aids the narration to stay natural and life like. Also, quite a few dialogues help in bringing a chuckle or two on a regular interval. Watch out for the one where a kid explains to other the difference between two kinds of individuals - one which gives it back when provoked and the other which gives it to someone without even being provoked. Priceless! Though the film remains tout for most of the time with its first 1 hour being exceedingly gripping and last 15 minutes making one look at the going-ons with eyes and mouth wide open (the finale is gritty and quite violent), there are moments just after the interval point when the film seems to stagnate a little. With the plot being firmly established and the story taking a turn around the interval point, one looks forward to the story moving ahead but that doesn't quite happen. Also, the song picturisation on a girl with the four boys celebrating is completely out of place. However, things take turn for better when Brijesh comes out of coma and the boys are sent to Mumbai for a murder, hence leading to a thrilling conclusion to Kabootar. While Govind Namdeo is in great form once again after Johnny Gaddaar and acts as a fulcrum to the proceedings, it is scenes where the four boys are together that keep the audience hooked on. Performance-wise each of them delivers as required by the characters they play. While Ankur Khanna (Jeetu) underplays his part, Harsh (Irshaad) is excellent as a foul mouthed youngster. Vishal Thakkar (Prabal), who had made a great impression in Chandni Bar (as Tabu's grown up son), plays his broody part quite well while Nikhil Yadav (Sharafat) justifies his presence as a boy who always wanted his friends to come out of the mess they had entrapped themselves into. However, just like Manoj Bajpai walked away with all the accolades in Satya, Harsh would do the same as 'Irshaad'. He is simply lovable as a brat who doesn't quite care for the world around him! If made 5 years back, one would have questioned the commercial prospects of a film like Kabootar. After all the film doesn't really have a romantic angle per se (though there are two girls involved, they don't really make the film a romance saga by any means), doesn't boast of conventional songs (Vishal-Shekhar have been roped in for a background track and a situational song), mostly has a small town setting (with only about 10 minutes set in Mumbai), bears a rustic look (courtesy DOP Jailesh Oberoi who does a very good job in 'not making' the setting look filmy) and concludes with a tragic ending! However, given the current scenario, when clever marketing has made films like Aamir, Mithya, Khuda Kay Liye and Shaurya commercially successful in spite of a serious theme and lack of star cast which pulls audience in hordes, Kabootar does promise a lot. Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 21 Jul 2008 | 10:07 am Top Ten albums of the weekRank Last week Film Plusses Minuses 1 1 Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa In a week when there haven't been many changes in the charts, JTYJN is continuing its extraordinary run. With the film holding excellently in it's second week at the box office, the music too isn't showing any signs of going down and giving competition to the likes of 'Singh Is Kinng' and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' which are looking at hitting the #1 spot. None 2 3 Singh Is Kinng Moving up by a spot, 'Singh Is Kinng' is now breathing down the neck of JTYJN. Though this may seem like just a single spot jump for this Pritam soundtrack, the fact remains that it counts in a big way due to Vishal-Shekhar throwing a big challenge with 'Bachna Ae Haseeno'. With less than 3 weeks to go for the film's release, the makers have to still unleash 3-4 songs as well as the talkie promos. There is lot to do in lot lesser time! 3 2 Bachna Ae Haseeno 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' continues to enjoy a very good standing for itself and sustains quite well in the Top-3. After a long time (barring 'Tashan') there is a film from YRF which is looking quite positive! Now one looks forward to the final product created by Siddharth Anand! Due to disagreement between YRF and certain music channels, the songs aren't finding an all around satellite publicity 4 4 Kismat Konnection Pritam has done it again! His music has been largely responsible for the film getting a very good opening at the box office. From 'Race' to 'Jannat' and now 'Kismat Konnection' - Pritam has been making heads turn in a big way! One of the best songs of the album, 'Move Your Body Now', has been pushed to the end credit title rolls! 5 5 Jannat It's high time that some other newer albums start making an impression on the charts. Why? Because till then it would be hard to displace albums like 'Jannat' and 'Race' which are refusing to be displaced from the music stands. Yet another super week for 'Jannat'! None 6 6 Ugly Aur Pagli Now is the time that 'Ugly Aur Pahli' starts making an even better impression that it currently is doing on the charts. The film is around 10 days away and it would be quite an incentive for this Mallika Sherawat-Rahul Bose starrer if Anu Malik sees an album of his breaking into Top-5! Since the film doesn't boast of a conventional star-cast, title and music, it would take some time to grow further. Release of the film should help the sales further. 7 7 Race The biggest superhit of the year so far, 'Race' is unstoppable! So consistent are the sales of this album that albums like 'God Tussi Great Ho', 'Money Hai To Honey Hai' and 'C Kkompany' are still waiting to break into Top-3! None 8 8 Love Story 2050 Barely surviving at the bottom of the charts, 'Love Story 2050' may just fizzle out totally in a fortnight's time. Anu Malik did well but then sometimes just being 'good' isn't 'good enough'! 'Love Story 2050' always missed one bona fide chartbuster track 9 9 Ada Rahman is making sure that his name counts. Though there isn't one single chartbuster that the nation is humming along, collectively 'Ada' is doing well for Rahman followers. Beyond A.R. Rahman there is absolutely noting else known about the project 10 New Rock On Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy may have seen their 'Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic' move out of the charts but in lieu of that, their soundtrack for 'Rock On' has debuted this week. The music, as the film's title suggests, is full 'rock on'. The music sticks to the theme but in the process caters to very restricted segment of audience. "Until then the unit here (in LA) will have to take care of it." A brave decision considering Sylvester Stallone joins the shooting from the 18th. "Stallone doesn't have a walk-on part, as some people seemed to believe. He has a substantial 3-day role. And he plays himself," reveals Sajid. So Stallone as Stallone in Kambakth Ishq. Not bad, eh? "Not bad at all. This is the most expensive film I've ever made. And every cent is worth it," says Sajid proudly. Though Sajid doesn't want to reveal any part of the story, Akshay Kumar plays a stunt man in Hollywood and Stallone is one of the Hollywood icons he plays body-double to in the film. Before shooting together the two bonded off the sets. Apparently, Stallone got interested in Akshay's work and even showed interest in watching Kumar's work. Hope, Akshay doesn't show Stallone his 'Rambo' acts in the Khiladi films.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 21 Jul 2008 | 9:49 am Big B speaks from Toronto after the first 'Unforgettable' concert on Friday nightThe first of the 'Unforgettable' concerts on Friday night in Toronto was a spectacular success. Speaking about the show from Toronto, the Big B says, "It's a very well packaged show and the production was brilliant. The energy level of each performance was simply unbelievable. I am so happy for the kids - Akshay and Preity and Ritesh and Vishal and Shekhar and Abhi and Ash and Shiamak and his tireless dancers. Everyone performed their heart out. And the crowds were just fantastic. Sold -out venue. We had to open up the tiers to accommodate those who could not get tickets. Fire marshals and security had a tough time keeping them on their seats. Not a moment to breathe, just one ecstatic moment after another." The Bachchan family was given a green-carpet welcome in Toronto. "The Prime Minister of Canada sent his Secretary of State to greet us and welcome us to Canada. He sent me a wonderfully worded, framed letter through him. I feel so honoured and privileged when India and Indians get recognition." Enthused by the next 'Unforgettable' concert the Big B says, "The promoter from New Jersey came in to see the show and informed us that the New Jersey show is sold out, weeks in advance and New York is on its way to a sell out. This is unique for Indian show responses. Yes, I am old and seen and been there but the enthusiasm of the youngsters and the unchanging allegiance of the fans is such a booster, I start feeling young again, once on stage. The Big B misses Mumbai already. "We will be away for a while, but the entire family is together. We have not been able to be like this for a very long time. I love being in this state, so long as we are all together. The Big B's missing baggage has been retrieved. "Bags have been found and are with me. Costumes came separately and were in tact. Our first show last night (in Toronto) went off like a bomb. Incredible. Non stop adrenalin. And what a crowd! Just fantastic. Thank you Toronto."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 21 Jul 2008 | 9:28 am Hrithik turns singer with Kites - Bollywood Mantra
Source: Google News India - Entertainment | 21 Jul 2008 | 8:28 am Blog: White Bollywood Backup DancersSo Bollywood movies have always had a dance number - where you get a whole bunch of backup dancers to the main leads. This is similar to dance numbers in musicals or on music videos. What's funny is that in the old days most of these backup dancers used to be Indian. But now in almost every Bollywood film more and more of these backup dancers (esp female) are white. This is an interesting development. Since it didn't just happen in one movie and stop. It started somewhere and continues to this day in almost every movie. So why is that? Here are some of my hypotheses: 1) Since more and more Bollywood movies are set abroad - it may seem more "natural" that when the hero and the heroine spontaneously bust into a dance song - that they pull passers-by into their in-the-moment routine. And since they are in Canada, Australia, England, Switzerland, New Zealand or South Africa - the dancers tend to be representative of the country where the characters are. So the thinking must be that an Indian hero dancing w/ an Indian heroine with a bunch of white people dancing behind them is more realistic than an Indian hero dancing w/ an Indian heroine with a bunch of Indian dancers behind them in a foreign location. Just some sarcasm ;) 2) More likely I think this is economics at work. Flying cast and crew to foreign locations is still a very expensive proposition for Bollywood films. Esp as many of the costs are incurred in a foreign currency. Now as the production manager is determining whom to take - he/she probably has some budgetary limitations to be met. So this is a good place to cut - even though to hire foreign dancers may be more expensive than hiring indian dancers - when you add the airfare and hotel and other logistics costs - the foreign dancers are a more efficient option. And they seem more "realistic" per #1. 3) My third hypothesis is somewhat cultural in nature. A culture that was dominated by a white race for almost 200 years finds reason to show off a position of strength. Sometimes this may come across by Indian men who may have a white girlfriend or a wife. Esp in Bollywood films that may be targeting a broad and diverse Indian population - there is some sense of strength in a man who has white chicks dancing behind him and to his tune. (Interestingly enough though, often the guy who is shown w/ a white girlfriend is the bad one - the one w/ moral weaknesses and a strong and ugly love for money. But being with the white woman is different from just having them dancing behind you, right?) Those are the thoughts that come to mind. Can you think of any other reasons?
