Madrid attack suspect's acquittal upheld

In this Nov. 17, 2006 file photo released by the Spanish Interior Ministry, Rabei Osman of Egypt, a key suspect in the Madrid train bombings, is seen in handcuffs in Madrid. Spain's Supreme Court on Thursday July 17, 2008 has upheld the acquittal of the man once named as a top suspect in the March 11, 2004 bombings of commuter trains in Madrid, rejecting an appeal by prosecutors on the grounds he has already been convicted of the same crime in Italy. The court on Thursday ruled that because Osman had already been sentenced to 8 years in prison in Italy, he could not be condemned again for the same crime, says a court official. The bombings killed 191 people and injured more than 1,800 and were Europe's worst Islamic terror attacks.
