'Mad Men,' 'Damages' Make Emmy Nomination History

"Mad Men," AMC's sleek drama set in the advertising world circa 1960, and FX's legal thriller "Damages" made Emmy nominations history Thursday as the first basic cable programs to gain best-series nods.

The Emmys Wimp Out

Courtesy of AMC, HBO

When the Emmys announced their best series long lists — the ten shows in each category that had a chance at a coveted nomination — we wondered if the presence of such surprising shows as Family Guy, The Tudors, and The Wire suggested an actual shake-up in the Emmys, or if those lists were just the Academy's way of covering their butts. Well, now we know, as from those exciting long lists (and the ones uncovered by the diligent diggers at Gold Derby), a bunch of really boring Emmy nominations have sprung.

The biggest stories, of course, are the presence of Mad Men — the first basic-cable series ever to get a Best Drama nomination — and the absence of The Wire, by universal acclaim the best TV show ever, which failed once again to be nominated for any major awards. We're not complaining about Mad Men's sixteen-nomination haul — the show is terrific, and deserves its acclaim. And it's expertly ridden the Show You Should Watch bandwagon in a way The Wire was never able to accomplish, making itself into the hot series the Emmys couldn't ignore. But is anyone surprised that of these two long-shot shows, the big winner today was the one set safely in the past, in New York, with nary a black person to be seen?

Meanwhile, The Wire picked up one nomination, for David Simon's teleplay for the series finale — exactly as many nominations as According to Jim, Deal or No Deal, Hannah Montana, Ice Road Truckers, Jay Leno’s Garage, Kid Nation, Meerkat Manor, The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, Robot Chicken, Scrubs, and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. No matter how many nominations you give Breaking Bad, TV Academy people, you're not making up for this embarrassment.

Ultimate Racial Obama Gaffe Comes From Unlikeliest of Places

Barack Obama Jesse Jackson

Photo: Getty Images, AP

Remember when Lou Dobbs complained about black leaders talking about race and he used the term "cotton-picking"? And when Congressman Geoff Davis referred to Barack Obama as "that boy"? And when Fox News awkwardly referred to Michelle as Barack's "baby mama"? Each time there was a media freak-out — even though the comments were relatively innocuous, or not intended in a racially charged manner. The reason? Because commentators are living in terror for the day that someone actually says the N-word on live television.

Now, it turns out, someone already has — and it was one of the last people you'd expect. Obama ally and civil-rights leader Jesse Jackson, in another segment of the Fox News tape where he said he wanted to cut the candidate's "nuts out,"* he also used the N-word. According to TVNewser yesterday (and later confirmed by Fox), Jackson said of Obama: "He's talking down to black people … telling n—s how to behave."

Now, this isn't as catastrophic as it would be had someone of another race used the charged word — but it is the moment watchdogs have been waiting for since Obama announced his candidacy. Now it's out there, in headlines connected with Obama and on all the morning talk shows. We're guessing it won't happen again, but even the most politically correct commentators are probably a little more nervous this week.

What Else Jesse Jackson Said on That Tape [TVNewser/Mediabistro]

*Why does no one ever talk about how weird this phrasing is? What, exactly, is he intending to cut them out of? Are Barack Obama's testicles secretly beating away in his chest, or something?

Patricia Duff to Remake ‘Legally Blonde’ in Real Life

"The rules of hair care are simple and finite."Photo: Getty Images

Yesterday, Patricia Duff, the ex-wife of Ron Perelman, announced that she'll be representing herself in court in their revived custody battle over their daughter, Caleigh, who is charging that her mother abused her. On the one hand, Duff's decision is understandable: Her divorce from Ron Perelman reportedly cost $5.2 million in legal fees. On the other hand, it's completely insane. Isn't representing yourself in court the provenance of serial killers and Law & Order characters? Also: Duff, who despite a background in politics does not have a law degree, has already hit a snag. The Daily News reports that when she attempted to file papers in court yesterday, she was rebuffed by the judge for not paying a $45 filing fee. "Ms. Duff, it's not me personally, but the court does require filing fees," the judge said. We can't wait until they're in court and Duff is all, "actus non facit reum nisi mens sit rea, okay?" This is going to be so much better than the Christie Brinkley divorce case.

Barack Obama Brought in $52 Million Last Month

Obama Money

Photo-illustration: Everett Bogue; Photos: Getty Images, iStockphoto

On Monday Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent out an e-mail to supporters saying that "the McCain campaign is bragging that they are out-raising and out-spending us." It wasn't technically untrue: The McCain campaign was getting that message out there — but it turns out that in June, Obama vastly outraised his rival. Though the McCain campaign reported $22 million in fund-raising for last month, the Obama campaign just announced that its total was $52 million.

The average donation was $68 dollars, which means the total was reached by a mix of large and very small contributions. This may not mean that the financial advantage is now Obama's, however. The RNC had about $67.8 million on hand at the end of the month of June, and independent groups are sure to further muddy the waters. For an in-depth analysis of the campaigns' finance situations, check out Peter Keating's story here from yesterday.

by the book: assouline opens up shop in nyc

Assouline

Renovations in New York are always bittersweet. Take the recent refurb of the Plaza Hotel. While it's nice to see the old girl spruced up, it's hard to believe that any change to the Oak Bar, scheduled to reopen at the end of the summer, will top the original (but then how can you improve a watering hole that was the site of Cary Grant's kidnapping in "North By Northwest?"). One upgrade to the Plaza that we can endorse is the newly opened Assouline boutique, the first of its kind in North America (the original shop is in Place Saint Germaine des Prés in Paris). Whether you stop in to browse the impressive selection of fashion titles or decide that you need to have the publisher completely restock your library (Assouline will provide everything from books to shelves), the mezzanine-level shop provides a civilized oasis.

the return of laetitia casta

Notolifestyle

the return of laetitia casta With the looming fall ad campaigns heralding the return of nineties supermodels in all of their thin-but-not-too-thin, moderately busty glory, Laetitia Casta is gearing up to party like it's 1999. The Corsican-born beauty, who's been walking the runway since the ripe old age of 15, is experiencing a resurgence these days (not that you ever left our hearts, Laetitia), snagging the cover of this month's Paris Vogue, plus a rumored spot in Louis Vuitton's high-profile, supers-only fall campaign. And since Ralph Lauren hand-picked her to star as the face of his new fragrance, Notorious (sultry ads shot by Michael Thompson to appear in your favorite glossies come September), she can add beauty icon to her ever-diversifying portfolio.

The Many Faces of Will Ferrell

Photo-illustration: Getty Images

2 to Be Precise: Will Ferrell will star in 2-Face, a high-concept comedy by Hancock's Vince Gilligan that despite the fortuitous timing of its announcement is not a Dark Knight spinoff. Instead, it's about a bleeding-heart liberal with a split personality who's a racist. Spoiler alert — this will definitely be in the trailer: Liberal Side: "Let's recycle some cans." Racist Side [cocking a rifle]: "…some Mexi-cans." [HR]

West Side Historia: Arthur Laurents will bring his new version of West Side Story to Broadway in 2009, with Spanish-language dialogue and Hispanic actors adding authenticity to the classic musical. "The scenes with the Spanish are wildly exciting because they are much less inhibited," an excited Laurents tells the Times. The original Jerome Robbins choreography will remain unchanged, however, and will sadly continue to lack any Lambada. [NYT]

Three Go Crazy: Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Robert Duvall will star in the music drama Crazy Heart for CMT Films, based on the book by Thomas Cobb about an alcoholic country singer who gets his life and career back on track with the support of a female reporter. Yawn — in the head-to-head battle of country music movies, we'll take Toby Keith's Beer for My Horses because it's got Ted Nugent killing people. [Variety]

Woo's 22 Caliber: John Woo will direct the comic-book adaptation of Caliber for Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil. Story follows King Arthur and his knights as nineteenth-century gunslingers in the Pacific Northwest, where they undoubtedly leap sideways holding two pistols as doves fly away in slow motion. [Variety]

Live-Action TMNT?: Playmates' Website for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys has dropped the intriguing bait that Mirage Licensing is "in negotiations with several companies about a new TMNT movie for release in 2010." Please God let there be giant puppet fights! Please God let Elias Koteas take time out of his busy schedule working at Applebee's to play Casey Jones again! [Playmates Toys]

FABULOUS

On the left we have a creation from Chloe Dao (season two).Yes, it's a baby doll, but the cut and fit on the bust are impeccable. In the middle, we have a look by Rami Kashou (season four). It looks like it walked off a real runway. Très chic. And on the right is a look from Jeffrey Sebelia (season three). It's probably the best example of rocker chic from the series.Photo: imaxtree

On the left is a look by Jillian Lewis (season four). Again, this could have walked down a real fall runway. In the center is a look by Uli Herzner (season three). You forgot how lovely her collection was, didn't you? And on the right — as if we need to remind you — is a look by season-four winner Christian Siriano. We weren't a fan of some of his feathered creations, but this is one of the best looks of the series.Photo: imaxtree

HIDEOUS

Now for the fun part! On the left is a jacket by Chris March (season four), tricked out with human hair. Human hair and fashion have the same relationship as human hair and food: They're awful when mixed together. The middle gray outfit is by season-one winner Jay McCarroll. We prefer our boots without enough fur to insulate a house. And on the right is a dress by Santino Rice (season three). If that model had lifted her arms, she would have flown away. And probably landed in a medieval fashion dungeon.Photo: imaxtree

On the left is a dress by Dao. Looks like a shower liner gone wrong. In the center is a swimsuit by Mychael Knight (formerly Michael), which looks like it could have been designed by and intended for a Star Wars character. On the right is a dress by Sweat P. Someone really should have taken away her glitter and paste.Photo: imaxtree

Breaking: Mayor Bloomberg Is Rich

That bow tie is solid gold. Probably.
Okay, maybe not.Photo: Getty Images

Merrill Lynch agreed to sell its 20 percent stake in Bloomberg today, according to CNBC, to the tune of $4.5 billion. As the Business Sheet points out, that puts the total value of the company at $22.5 billion, and furthermore, they figure:
Founder (and Mayor) Mike Bloomberg owns a 72 percent stake in Bloomberg L.P, so that makes his net worth $16.2 billion, $4 billion more than Forbes reported last fall.

Just so you're aware, that's roughly equivalent to the GNP of Iceland. Freaky, right? Imagine how it will look to future generations when they discover our fossilized bank statement in the same strata as Bloomberg's. But why are we still even counting? Twelve billion, sixteen billion. Same diff. Dude is rich.

Ikea Shuttle-Crisis Solved?

Red Hook: There was a rumor that the Ikea water taxi between the store and Manhattan was no longer going to be free, but $6, for noncustomers. But the store's saying that's not true, just that customers (with proof of purchase) will be seated first. Hmmm, how long will this last? And will they keep the buses in and out of the Hook free for non-shoppers, too? (Plus, is The Real World coming here now?) [Curbed]
Brooklyn Heights: A federal parole office will share a building with the tony St. Ann's middle and high schools, but, according to the chief probation officer, most of the sex offenders coming in and out never actually molested a child, just downloaded child porn. That's a relief. [Brownstoner]
Bushwick: In this wacky new bohemian outpost, an artist wants people to wear plants on their belts. He did: "Most of the time, people gave me weird looks and would snicker, 'That guy's wearing a plant.' But then they'd talk about plants for twenty minutes. How cool is that?" Pretty cool, Chris! (Eye roll.) [Metro via BushwickBK]
Chelsea: A scary, Santa-type painter may be evicted from his large $576-a-month apartment because it's crammed with (kinda scary?) artwork that was blocking the route to the fire escape. Obama’s Money Advantage Not Such an Advantage Anymore

Anderson Cooper, Anderson Pooper

Photo-illustration: Everett Bogue; Photos: Getty Images, Retrofile/Getty Images

Every political campaign loves to play the underdog. But David Plouffe, Barack Obama’s campaign manager, wasn’t kidding when he e-mailed supporters on Monday to say, “The McCain campaign is bragging that they are out-raising and out-spending us.” Team Obama still hasn’t released fund-raising totals for the month of June, when John McCain had his best month, generating nearly $22 million. Insiders on both sides are murmuring about recent surprises, like McCain's outspending Obama in Missouri, and McCain's placing ads on cable TV’s New England Sports Network. And Democrats are starting to realize that they shouldn’t be quite as confident about money as they were just a couple of weeks ago.

Obama raised $287 million during the primary season, an incredible number by any standard; McCain raised about $120 million. But while that gap has made headlines, it’s pretty meaningless now. Obama had $33 million in cash on hand at the end of May, while the Democratic National Committee, which idled through most of the Obama–Hillary Clinton primary fight, had just $3.9 million, for a total of about $37 million. McCain, on the other hand, had $26.7 million on hand at the end of June and the Republican National Committee had $67.8 million, for a total of about $95 million. Whatever Obama collected in June, it’s clear that while he has spent the last month struggling to close the deal with Clinton donors and put out Netroots brushfires, the GOP financial machine is cranking up for McCain.

The Obama campaign believes it will raise something like half a billion dollars from nearly 2 million supporters for the general election: $300 million for Obama himself from here on out, plus $180 million through the DNC, where donors can give up to $28,500 apiece. Obama is confidently plowing $650,000 a day into television ads, nearly four times as much as McCain is spending. And he is closing off alternative sources of money: Obama has rejected public financing and has also discouraged independent groups that might not submit to his message discipline, leading “527” organizations such as the Fund for America and Progressive Media USA to disband.

But Obama will need every penny he’s wishing for to keep up with his opponent. Republicans are now busy channeling money to McCain through contributions to his campaign, to the RNC, to state GOP parties, and to the Republican Governors Association. The latter two groups are exempt from federal restrictions because they are supposed to work at the state level, creating giant loopholes that McCain is exploiting. Indeed, McCain is now hitting donors up for $70,100 a pop: $2,300 to McCain, $28,500 to the RNC, and $10,000 to each of four state parties. McCain’s campaign expects to rake in another $95 million through the Republican convention. It will then collect $84 million in public financing. And then it estimates “independent” organizations such as the RGA will spend something like $120 million on McCain’s behalf. McCain’s total general-election budget: about $400 million.

All of which tells us three things. First, Obama’s vaunted money machine will mean less than you might expect. Given his burn rate and how much McCain is raising, Obama may well end up with something like a 6-5 or 5-4 edge, not anything more decisive. Which makes Obama’s decision to run a 50-state campaign a critical gamble: He can run in Montana and Mississippi only as long as he can keep organizations and TV ads going in Michigan and Minnesota, too.

Second, campaign-finance reform is deader than dead. Maybe Obama’s huge network of small donors will emerge as a new, small-d democratic base in American politics. For the moment, however, the big-D Democratic candidate is busy attending rich folks’ fund-raisers from Atlanta to Hollywood. And McCain, reform’s chief architect, is happily blowing holes in his own law, filtering money through state-level organizations while his campaign sucks at the taxpayers’ teat.

Finally, we ain’t seen nothing yet. By this time four years ago, George W. Bush, John Kerry, and “independent” groups had already blown $176 million on general-election ads. Obama and McCain, after expending most of what they raised to get by their primary opponents, have spent just about $40 million so far campaigning against each other. They’re just getting rolling. —Peter Keating

Norman Mailer’s Timely Take on ‘68 Conventions Reissued

Just in time for this year’s Democratic and Republican national conventions comes this 40th-anniversary edition of Norman Mailer’s groundbreaking New Journalistic study of the 1968 nomination contests, with an introduction by — who else? — Frank Rich. Needless to say, the historical parallels between then and now are plenty and grim, and Mailer’s acid, disabused prose may as well have been written yesterday. Indeed, it’s lost none of its urgency. Read (or reread) his essays now.

With opening-weekend Imax showings of The Dark Knight already selling out in many cities, is it worth waiting a couple of days — or waking up at four in the morning — to pay extra money and see Batman on the biggest of big screens? Or should you just see it in a regular theater, since after all, only twenty minutes of the movie are shot in Imax anyway? We asked New York's Logan Hill, who saw the movie in Imax, to debate Dan Kois, who saw it on a standard screen.

Point:
Why see The Dark Knight in an Imax theater? As P-Funk front man George Clinton once succinctly explained to us, "'Cuz that shit is motherfuckin' huuuuuge."

Imax 70mm negatives pack in the digital equivalent of 70 megapixels per frame. Place a 35mm frame over an Imax frame and it looks like a puny postage stamp mounted on a panoramic postcard. Philistine technophobes dismiss the hyperresolution afforded by this Brobdignagian camera system as a manipulative gimmick, and they are just as correct as the Victorian idiots who dismissed moving-picture technology as a fad in the 1890s. In his film 2001, no less an unprincipled carnival barker than Stanley Kubrick used this ridiculous gimmick to emphasize the vastness of space and the crystalline, antiseptic inhumanity of robotics. In The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan and his cameraman Wally Pfister kick off their film with six of the film's twenty or so minutes of Imax footage, generating menace out of an impossibly detailed but otherwise simple shot of an office tower — and making the Joker's bank heist even more startlingly immediate. It's just one of Nolan's answers to a nearly insoluble problem: How do you make men in tights believable? With Imax, you overload audiences with detail, until what's on the other side of the looking-glass mirror looks more real than what's around them. —Logan Hill

Counterpoint:

Bat Man good on normal screen! Good movie! No matter what screen! Big screen, small screen, all same! Bat Man big! Joker blow things up! Movie in color! Can see everything! Save money! See Bat Man regular screen! Not miss things! —Dan Kois

Introducing Anderson Pooper

Anderson Cooper, Anderson Pooper

He even has the look down!Photo: Getty Images, Graydon Sheppard

We love people who name animals after celebrities. For example, we can't get over how Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck named their Golden Retriever after Martha Stewart. Which is why we are delighted to learn that Frank, the proprietor of OMGblog, named his silver-maned cat Anderson Pooper. Little Anderson won yesterday's photo contest on Daily Paws, a Website devoted to adorable pets (as opposed to the OMGblog, which is largely devoted to adorable men, and their adorable junk). Anyway, we wanted to celebrate him today, both for being cute and for having the best name ever. Daily Intel editor Chris has wanted to get a dog for a long time (will somebody please explain to his boyfriend why this is the best idea ever?), and had been planning on naming it "Roofio," in homage to Hook. But clearly as a gay media blogger, he should name it something more topical, like, say, "Shepherd Smith."

‘The Dark Knight’: When the Superhero Movie No Longer Needs Its Superhero

Photo-illustration: Courtesy of Warner Brothers

Whether critics find the darkness of The Dark Knight impressive or, like New York's David Edelstein, oppressive, they all agree: The Dark Knight is the darkest, grittiest, most down and dirty movie ever in a genre not exactly known for realism. But what is it that makes The Dark Knight so dark? It's not only the violence (though it's at times shocking). It's not only Heath Ledger's Joker, or our knowledge of Ledger's sad end (though both the performance and the actor's fate add layers of gloom to the movie). It's not even the end, which it's no spoiler to reveal is far from your typical happy ending with hero triumphant.

The Dark Knight's darkness stems from a calculated decision by Christopher Nolan: to push Christian Bale's Batman into the background. To make, in essence, a superhero movie without the superhero. So what does Batman without Batman look like? And where can Nolan go from here?

From the beginning of The Dark Knight, Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne/Batman is only the fifth- or sixth-most-interesting character in his own movie. (The Joker, Harvey Dent, Gordon, Rachel Dawes, and even Alfred the butler are more intriguing onscreen than Batman.) Sure, it's not uncommon for criminals and supporting characters to be flashier than the superhero in a comic-book movie. It is uncommon, though, for the hero to serve — as Batman does in The Dark Knight — as little more than a patsy: just one of Gotham's wind-up toys, serving only to be set in motion by the Joker and sent into yet another trap. Unlike in most superhero movies, Batman isn't two steps ahead of the criminals, or even of us; instead, he's constantly behind, until even the audience can see the plots developing, and Batman's investigations making things worse.

And so throughout The Dark Knight, Batman himself is further and further marginalized, made more and more impotent. Batman can't stop the violence, can't crack the case, and his inability to comprehend the pure malevolent chaos that the Joker represents costs dozens of Gotham residents their lives. In so exhilaratingly illustrating the expression of that pure chaos — and in the dire straits it eventually puts our so-called hero in — The Dark Knight can be read as a philosophical argument against superheroes in a complicated world.

Which suggests there's not much further Nolan's gritty, realistic style of superhero flick can go. After all, you can't get much darker than a superhero movie that all but makes its superhero irrelevant. What's left? An empty Batcave.

With three covers out on stands on now, Wendell Lissimore is our latest man du jour. The Utah native started modeling in 2006, appearing in Italian Vanity Fair and doing some catalogue work here and there. But it wasn't until 2008 that he started blowing up. Suddenly he was walking for Hermès and Emanuel Ungaro, while working it out on the print side, booking a V editorial with the one and only Ms. I-don't-get-out-of-bed-for-less-than-$10,000 Linda Evangelista. This month, you can see him on the covers of Italian D with his son Phoenix, bleu, and Japan's LUSSW, each showing a different side of this hunk of man. Over at the Columbia Journalism Review, they note that the bear market seems to have affected the mood of certain embattled figures — in their Wall Street Journal stipple portraits. Take Vikram Pandit: He looked positively ebullient after his promotion to CEO of Citigroup last year, but appeared far more stern some months ago when he was forced to close his Old Lane hedge fund. Meanwhile, as the economy slides, the slight smile of Treasury secretary Hank Paulson has been replaced by an expression that is positively stormy. Turn that frown upside down, Mr. Secretary. Ratatat Stage Jameson-Fueled Rock Rampage!

Photo: Josh Gosfield

Ratatat turned a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg into a pocket-size arena last night. From the moment they put down their bottle of Jameson and took up their instruments, Evan Mast, Mike Stroud, and Afroed touring keyboardist Martin Bonventre thrashed away, hair flying, and drove the crowd nuts. The band played some tracks from LP3, released last week — and none of their remixes — but there was stimulation beyond the music: Bonventre strutted like James Brown, while the duo, mostly wordless, would break from their guitar playing to pound bongos or smack a bass drum. Loopy vintage video keyed to their array of influences (dub, Middle Eastern dance music, seventies guitar rock) played on a large screen. During an encore rendition of “Seventeen,” crowd members waved bright-orange foam fingers that Stroud had Frisbee-d to fans. “This is it,” said one sweaty attendee at the show’s end. “They're getting too big for little ol’ Billyburg.” Indeed — the next show here (after they wind up their tour) will be at Terminal 5. —Camille Sweeney

western passage: manuel's new look

Manuel

Looking for Elvis-worthy westernwear? Manuel Classic is your go-to label. But the label's spin-off line, Manuel, now in its second season, is about sophisticated citywear. The line is designed by Wilfredo Rosado, an Interview alum who spent two decades working for Giorgio Armani—work experience that's reflected in the streamlined good taste of his first, beach-ready Resort collection. Among our favorites pieces was a ruched-sleeve trench and a pair of full-legged pants made from a cotton/paper mix produced by a Japanese mill. Now that's the kind of paper pushing we like to see. Pharrell

Paper cover boy Pharrell Williams (that's him swinging an oversize croc Birkin on this month's cover) took his time taking the stage at the party the magazine threw in his honor at Santos Party House last night. Although the event was billed to run from 8 to 11 p.m., the hip-hop star didn't appear until 11:15. Once on, Williams was all business. Though he hasn't seemed to mind having his picture snapped in the past (a given for anyone who attends a Louis Vuitton fashion show), he steered the crowd back to the music last night. "All right now, kids, turn off all the cameras and put them away," he said. "And put your hands in the air. Say hell, yeah!" "He's so cute," said Paper's Mickey Boardman, before leaving his handbag with Nigo to take laps around the room. "I love a party." Pause. "Fine, I love a Paper party."

The Goot’s Guide to Loving Women

This is not, we hope, part of the Goot's Guide to
Loving Women. It's just an awesome paparazzi
shot from last month.Photo: Bauer-Griffin

We learned a lot of things about Steve Guttenberg today. In Spencer Morgan's Observer profile of the Police Academy star, we found out that he just moved back to New York because he's not "strong enough to live" in Los Angeles. We also learn that he's trying to get out a message ("Be nice to the meek"), he loves vodka, and the other day the guy at the bodega gave him a newspaper for free. Good stuff! But the real takeaway is this: Steve Guttenberg is dating more women than you are. Like, a lot more. The 49-year-old has dated an estimated 600 women, he says, and counting. So what can you learn from this (heretofore secret) legendary Lothario?

Start looking early in the day: “I pop out of bed at 6:30. And I say my prayers, and every day have a little hot water and lemon, that’s my start,” Guttenberg told Morgan. “And I go take a run in Central Park.” He gets a date out of that routine, now and again.
Take smart women to nice places: “Nothing's sexier than a smart woman,” he said after taking a Cornell grad to the Water Club. “The Goot is on the loose.”
Use third-person catch phrases: See above. This also seems to work for Barney Stinson.

Stay fit: “[My body] is my violin,” he told Morgan. “So I want to keep it tuned up.”
Advertise: The Goot is working on a book about his first ten years in Hollywood. Title: Diary of a Seducer.
Play the George Clooney card: “If I feel shitty, and someone says, ‘What are you working on,’ I’ll get really pissed off and go, ‘Yeah I’m doing a thriller with, you know, George Clooney,’" Guttenberg says. "I make myself feel better by that."
If that fails, play the other George Clooney card: "A good gay rumor about me might not be a bad thing to start!" he said, while discussing his career. "You know, a lot of heavyweight actors are gay. And they do very well."

If you do happen to end up dating 600 women using this routine, please make sure you use protection. Three Men and a Baby may have been a gas, but nobody thought it was so funny by the time it had become Three Men and a Little Lady, eh?

Kimora Lee Simmons’s Inappropriate Juniors’-Line Launch Party

Sigh.Photo: WireImage

Yesterday when we got a preview of Kimora Lee Simmons's new juniors' line for JCPenney, Fabulosity, we were surprised by how modest and dress-code-friendly it was. We wondered if Kimora might surprise us again at the launch party that night with a similar sense of age-appropriateness. We don't know why we bothered wondering.

Kimora told us at the soirée at Hiro nightclub she didn't approach designing her juniors' line any differently from her Baby Phat and KLS lines. "It has its similarities and it has its differences, but the price point and the age group is a little lower," she explained. "Though, technically, in the new line, I wear a lot of it. You're going to see these girls on the runway and you're going to say 'Kimora did that.' Because I would wear that. And my kids would wear that. So it's a very diverse line." Before we could ask if that meant she wears the same clothes as her kids, her publicist Keesha Johnson informed the slew of print reporters we had one more question. So we asked about her plans for Fashion Week. When she finished compellingly explaining to a tabloid how Djimon Hounsou and her daughters get along so well, she turned to us as her publicist tried to usher her away and said, "I'm working hard. I'll see you there, right?"

Inside the ballroom, the show kicked off with a nine-piece drum line pumping up the crowd pep-rally style. Finally, something that reminds us we're here for the kids! But things took a scandalous turn when the real music started and the models came out. Lyrics like "Honey, I like it rough, rough" and "hey motherf--ker," blasted incessantly through the speakers. The collection consisted of loose tube tops desperately in need of built-in bras, knee-high boots trimmed in fake fur, and slinky, low-back halter dresses. One unlucky model actually flashed her entire chest when her poorly fitted tube top slid down. For the grand finale the models — some clad in mighty short skirts — took spots on opposing staircases and danced with the banisters. When the largest cascade of fat silver confetti we'd ever seen burst from the ceiling, threatening our Champagne, we knew it was time to go.

Just when we thought things couldn't get any more un-teen, we opened our gift bags. Guess what was inside! Nary a trinket from the Fabulosity line, as we expected. But rather a bottle of Champagne. They may not know teens, but at least they're well versed in gift-bag therapy.—Sharon Clott

what's new with the pr champ

Christiansiriano

We admit it, we're not above watching "Project Runway." So, as we count down to the Season 5 tip-off (tonight! Bravo! 9 p.m. EST!), we thought it only right to catch up with last season's champ, Christian Siriano, as he prepares for his first solo show in September. His new collection won't be the black puffy-sleeved garments of yesteryear. In fact, there will be no black at all. "The colors are a bit muted with some really bright colors," he says. "It's a little more sculpted, a little more clean. Lots of organza and beautiful raffia." He'll be showing them all outside of the tents in an industrial space that seats 500, with the whole thing sponsored by LG Electronics. And that's not the only thing on his plate. "I'm doing costumes for a new movie, 'Eloise in Paris,' with Uma Thurman," he says. "I'm doing a haute couture fashion show that's set in Paris in the 1920's. It's a big project, and it's going to be really fabulous." And fierce, naturally.

Carroll Gardens Graffiti: ‘Yuppie Fux Are Sitting Dux’

Yuppie Fux Are Sitting Dux

Photo: Aileen Gallagher

The Clarett Group might want to offer potential residents of its new Carroll Gardens development, the Collection at Court Street, some muscle as well as granite countertops. Over the weekend, we noticed some angry new graffiti on our walk home on Union Street. “Die Yuppie Scum” was unoriginally sprayed on the plywood surrounding the old Longshoremen’s Union Hall, which will eventually be home to a building too tall for the neighborhood and unaffordable to most of the yuppies who live there now. But continuing west on Union toward Clinton Street, the angry vandal got more specific on the low wall in front of a brownstone. “Yuppie fux are sitting dux!” Yikes. Consider these fux warned. —Aileen Gallagher

Our Favorite Fashionable Beach Accessories

We wait all year to dig our toes into the sand, pick up some chick lit, turn off our cell phones, and enjoy a little "me" time at the beach. But more often than not our moments of pure beach bliss are disrupted by sightings of women in Corona hats, melting mascara, and cotton booty shorts with words scrawled across their asses. Or guys who look like they stumbled out of a messy frat house in tattered baseball caps and rumpled college T-shirts. We're sure we're not the only ones who feel this way. So for our latest Shop-A-Matic, we scoured the city for the 149 best beach items, from hats to flip-flops to cover-ups to beauty products, and more. Just because you're at the beach doesn't mean you can't set the fashion bar high. And with a good six weeks until Labor Day, you've still got time to make a splash (har har!) at your favorite sunning spot. Here are a few of our favorite picks.

Clockwise, from top left: Smashbox bronzer, Toxi sandal, Hillsy flip-flop, Jordana hat, The Don hat, Dermalogica SPF wipes, Slow Current cover-up, and Prism hoodie.

Desert-Chic Fusion Body-Bronzing Powder and Brush Set, by Smashbox
Price: $55
Why we like it: Use this all-over body bronzer on every body part, from your legs to your face — it'll give you the most bang for your buck.

Toxi, by Fiorentini & Baker
Price: $295
Why we like it: The little studs on this open-toe T-strap gladiator make it interesting.

Hillsy, by Vans
Price: $28
Why we like it: A men's shoe with a woven bottom. Nice touch.

Jordana, by Eugenia Kim
Price: $221
Why we like it: The rim on this women's straw hat provides ample shade.

The Don, by Original Penguin
Price: $48
Why we like it: The striped rim of this straw men's fedora adds a twist to this beach classic.

Solar Defense Wipes (SPF 15), by Dermalogica
Price: $22
Why we like it: Slip this portable pack in your beach bag (or gym bag or tiny purse!) for easy SPF application. It doesn't even give your hands with that gross, sticky feeling, either.

Slow Current Cover-up, by Lilka
Price: $88
Why we like it: The bright print and scalloped hem on this silk-and-cotton cover-up offer feminine ways to top any bathing suit.

Prism Hoodie, by Quiksilver
Price: $60
Why we like it: The bright graphic print on this men's hoodie stands out from the rest of Quiksilver's beach classics. The hood is also detachable, with snaps in the front. —Sharon Clott

Gap’s Patrick Robinson Is Quite the Popular Fellow

Glamour's Gap love.Photo: Courtesy of Glamour

There's something about Patrick Robinson that's getting editors all hot and bothered this month. August issues of both Glamour and Nylon featured a spread on the executive vice-president of design at Gap Adult and gapbody, a position he's held since May 2007. Gap's publicists must be tooting their own horns with this kind of grade-A placement. Sure, the theme of their issues is denim, but the very similar stories with the front man Pat? Consider eyebrows raised.

For Nylon, style director Dani Stahl did her monthly "Factory Girl" feature at the Gap Studios on West 18th Street, crafting a pair of Avery jeans for the occasion, even getting "Gapped-out from head-to-toe" to present her pair to Robinson for approval. As for Glamour, the writer took a more Harper's Bazaar–via–Estée Lauder approach, dedicating six pages to styling Gap pieces next to a Q&A with the V.P. We never doubted Mr. Robinson's lock on denim, and after eight pages in two glossies, we still don't. So if that's what the publicists were aiming for by planting this story two places, go ahead, toot that horn. We've had our fill of Gap denim for now. See more after the jump. —Sharon Clott

you say olympics, we say shopping opportunity

Openingceremony1

When it comes to the Olympics, you either live for them or you make it a quadrennial mission to avoid knowing anything about them. Either way, Opening Ceremony has you covered. Founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon are Olympics die-hards, and to celebrate this year's sporting fortnight, they're keeping the doors to their shops in New York and Los Angeles open for a 72-hour stretch. The nonstop shopping kicks off with a party on August 8, and fans of the Games can swing by at any hour for the following three days to pick up limited-edition, Olympics-themed goodies such as T-shirts co-designed by the likes of Kim Gordon and sneakers made in collaboration with Nike Sportswear. Anti-fans, meanwhile, can continue in ignorance of the athletic brouhaha by dropping in for late-night Scrabble matches and snacks. And there's a feel-good bonus: According to Leon, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Chinese earthquake relief.

comfort food meets (slightly) uncomfortable husbands

Ferebee

With one year left in her twenties, Ferebee Bishop Taube decided the best place to celebrate her birthday would be the Great Jones Cafe (which one guest labeled the "best place for comfort food when you're experiencing the world's worst hangover"). Joining her last night were friends Olivia Chantecaille, Maggie Betts, Barbara Bush, and Eleanor Ylvisaker, as well as a couple of the designers (Alexander Wang and Elise Øverland) the PR maven works with. A highlight was the attendance of the handsome husbands of Taube's fancy girlfriends, most of whom claim late meetings or last-minute projects when she invites them to what they tend to refer to as "those retail parties" (read: store parties and fashion events). Perhaps they had the right idea, as it did get a little sticky when the same-sex-oriented (the male sex, that is) fashion types tried their best pickup lines on the better halves: "Shall we go to the john, John?" and "I'll swim in your brook, Brooke." All was forgiven when the ribs came out, however—we even spotted some girls who look like they haven't had so much as an M&M this entire week chowing down on the pork products.

Halston Lets Its Head Designer Go

Marco ZaniniPhoto: WireImage

Marco Zanini, we hardly knew ye. The designer who brought the Halston label back to life at New York Fashion Week in February reportedly no longer works there. WWD reports Zanini is said to have designed the label's spring collection, which will walk at Fashion Week in September. The label is on the hunt for a new designer and could announce one before the September show.

Halston was revived thanks to the efforts of Jimmy Choo's Tamara Mellon, Harvey Weinstein, and stylist Rachel Zoe. Things seemed to be going swimmingly leading up to the first show in February. In a revolutionary move Net-A-Porter signed on to sell Halston pieces online the day after the show walked. But Zoe's absence from the fashion show was a red flag something was awry. Then the collection received mixed reviews; critics felt it wasn't fresh enough. Speculation surfaced that Zoe, a member of Halston's creative advisory board, disagreed with Zanini about the direction of the line.

Though American retailers didn't have a voracious appetite for Halston, items sold out on Net-A-Porter. Asian and European retailers also responded favorably. Last month London's Selfridge's opened an 800-square-foot in-store Halston boutique. Halston's CEO even told WWD at the opening party for the store that the brand planned to branch into sunglasses, swimwear, jeans, and candles (go figure).

So will Zanini's collection walk in September? Will Zoe sit front row? Will Halston candles infiltrate Upper East Side townhouses? The suspense mounts.

elton's got flava: goodbye yellow brickle road, to be exact

Eltonjohn

Fashion-crowd crooner and rose-colored-sunglass wearer Elton John has his own honorary ice cream. The multi-flavor mélange is best enjoyed, we suggest, in small doses.

With only one collection under his caftan, creative director Marco Zanini is reportedly out at Halston. Does this mean we can look forward to owner Harvey Weinstein's design debut?

We reported on the staycation trend last month, but for those of you really into the idea of keeping it local, here are some ideas for taking it to the next level.

no joke: what lipstick says about batman's bad guy

Thejoker Joker2

With all the early Oscar buzz surrounding Heath Ledger's performance in the highly anticipated new Batman movie, all eyes will be on the Joker when "The Dark Knight" hits theaters this week. But if the comparisons between the late Mr. Ledger's portrayal of the comic book supervillain to Jack Nicholson's "Clown Prince of Crime" from 1989's "Batman" starts to enter film-nerd territory, know that there is an easier way to decipher the differences. Plain and simple: Their makeup is different—and according to Poppy King, color expert and author of "Lessons of a Lipstick Queen: Finding and Developing the Great Idea that can Change your Life," that's all you need to know in order to unlock the distinctions between the characters' inner psyches.

Jack Nicholson

The Mouth: "Nicholson is the power woman's Joker," Poppy says. "He way overdoes the lip liner—very eighties."

The Man: "Although he appears to be so put-together, underneath those magnificently painted lips is a debauched and unfettered lust for power. He is so vain that he has lost any sense of right and wrong, and his desire to control and a longing for approval turn very ugly and psychotic."

Heath Ledger

The Mouth: "Heath is the post-post-feminist's Joker. He is so deconstructionist with his red lipstick, it almost comes right back around to the Renaissance!"

The Man: "He has a total disregard for society and his red lipstick style is indicative of his desire to shock. It's an unmistaken visual reference to his bloodlust and his loss of sanity that seeks for nothing other than revenge on normality. He uses his lips to denote the primitive urge for man to attack his fellow man, and his lips show no shame or pretense in that."

For less psychotic adventures in red lipstick, www.lipstickqueen.com has products and application tips.

kimora fabs up the mass market

Kimoraleesimmons

"In this economy, the way that things are going right now, I really demand that all my divas young and old look fabulous. And I don't want them to spend their last dime doing it," Kimora Lee Simmons explained at last night's launch of her new Fabulosity line for JCPenney at Hiro. The juniors sportswear collection, a decidedly non-bank-breaking collaboration between Simmons and the retail giant, hits stores this week, just in time for a little (frugal) back-to-school shopping. Tees, knits, denim, and outerwear will all be available in-store and online, priced from $29 to $108. And though she cops to a penchant for YSL and Vuitton, not to mention a major thing for bling, Simmons insists that she readily identifies with her target audience. "I totally wear it," she says of the new line.
