However, the secretive preparation prior to the July 8th announcement and hype around a promised full disclosure of the flaw by Dan on August 7 at the Black Hat conference has generated a fair amount of backlash and skepticism among hackers and the security research community. In a post on CircleID, Paul Vixie offers his usual straightforward response to these allegations. The conclusion: 'Please do the following. First, take the advisory seriously — we're not just a bunch of n00b alarmists, if we tell you your DNS house is on fire, and we hand you a fire hose, take it. Second, take Secure DNS seriously, even though there are intractable problems in its business and governance model — deploy it locally and push on your vendors for the tools and services you need. Third, stop complaining, we've all got a lot of work to do by August 7 and it's a little silly to spend any time arguing when we need to be patching.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot. The researcher stipulated that the sub-5-minute estimate was valid for an unpatched machine in an ISP netblock with no NAT or firewall. The researcher, Lorna Hutcheson, called for others to post data on time-to-infection, and honeypot researchers in Germany did so the same day. They found longer times to infection, an average of 16 hours. Concludes the ISC's Hutchinson: "While the survival time varies quite a bit across methods used, pretty much all agree that placing an unpatched Windows computer directly onto the Internet in the hope that it downloads the patches faster than it gets exploited are odds that you wouldn't bet on in Vegas."Read more of this story at Slashdot. Surgeons had installed a cochlear implant in his left ear, and its software broke the acoustic world into 16 channels of blocky but recognizable sound. The story chronicled his brief beta test of 121-channel software. We asked him for an update: "Last year, I got the commercial version. Just as I remembered, the software makes music sound fuller and brighter. In January, I got my other ear implanted, and I can now hear in stereo. That's been an even more profound change. I don't have the new software in that ear yet, because we're still balancing the ears, which is easier to do with 16 channels. Still, I've been having fun with music. I played my favorites to a friend, and she said, 'You like men's voices in the upper tenor range and women's voices in the upper alto.' That helped me understand why I like songs like Neil Young's 'Long May You Run.' Then she guessed I'd like Yo La Tengo and Portishead, and I did. The beats are complex enough to keep me engaged without overwhelming me. My ears are very young yet, but I'm figuring them out, bit by bit. Literally."

Claude-François-Dorothée de Jouffroy, the Marquis d'Abbans, was serving in the infantry in 1772 when multiple infractions of military discipline sent him to the prison near Cannes. While watching convicts rowing galleys there, he began speculating on how the new-fangled steam engine could power boats. After his release, de Jouffroy went to Paris in 1775 to study the latest steam tech. He used a Newcomen engine on his steamboat 1.0. The engine of this 42-foot steamship moved oars equipped with rotating, hinged flaps modeled on the webbed feet of waterfowl. He called it the Palmipède, or Webfoot, and he tried running it on the Doubs, a tributary of the Saône, in June and July of 1776. Tried is the operative word here, or perhaps we should say, inoperative. Undaunted, de Jouffroy adapted James Watt's designs to build a parallel-motion, double-acting steam engine. He put that in a boat named the Pyroscaphe (from the Greek for fire-boat). Instead of ungainly and inefficient mechanical duck feet, this boat was equipped with two large paddle wheels (like those used to power water mills), one on each side of the hull. The Pyroscaphe was three times the size of his earlier attempt: more than 148 feet long, with a beam of nearly 15 feet. It displaced 163 tons and carried a crew of three. The horizontal engine moved a reciprocating double rack, which geared to ratchet wheels on a shaft that carried the paddle wheels. The waning years of the ancien régime were a time of considerable innovation in France. Brothers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier had demonstrated the first hot-air balloon capable of carrying passengers just six weeks earlier, and thousands of people lined the banks of the Saône when de Jouffroy showed his pride and joy in Lyon. The Pyroscaphe steamed upstream at 6 mph without a sail, and the crowds cheered this technological marvel. But after 15 minutes, the boat began to break up under the pounding of the engine. De Jouffroy quickly and cannily steered the boat ashore, and then bowed to the cheering multitudes. The marquis continued experimenting on the Saône for 16 months. Still, the French Academy of Sciences refused to recognize his achievement, ostensibly because the demonstration was not done in Paris, but perhaps because of the jealousy of rival inventors. The French Revolution soon ensued, and though the nobleman kept his head, he never got his patent: not from the republic, not from Napoleon (a "usurper" to whom the legitimist de Jouffroy would not even apply for a patent), not from the restored Bourbon monarchy and not from citizen-king Louis Philippe. De Jouffroy ended life discouraged and poor in France's grand old soldiers' home, the Hôtel des Invalides. He died of cholera in 1832, at age 80. American steamboat pioneer Robert Fulton, whose own experiments began not on the Hudson but the Seine, acknowledged that "if the glory ... belongs to any one man, it belongs to the author of the experiments made on the River Saône at Lyons in 1783." The solons of France's Third Republic finally acknowledged de Jouffroy with a statue in 1884. The Register is reporting that IBM will ship an eight-core chip running at 4.0 GHz. The chip will support four threads per core and fit into some huge systems. For example, University of Illinois is going to house a 300,000-core machine that can hit 10 petaflops. It'll have 620 TB of memory and support 5 PB/s of memory bandwidth. The makers of Xbox 360 find themselves competing on two fronts: They're fighting off the Wii's advance into nontraditional gamer markets and also trying to compete with Sony's PlayStation 3 for graphics gluttons and needy net users. In addition to new games, the company announced several new battle plans, such as copying Nintendo's cute characters, stealing exclusive titles like Final Fantasy XIII from Sony and courting people who don't like videogames by partnering with Netflix for on-demand movie streaming. Unlike past years, this year's downscaled E3 summit doesn't occupy the whole of the convention center. Vast expanses of the halls are taken up by other conferences -- or wholly empty, in this case. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comAs the press filed in, Microsoft ran teaser trailers with Xbox owners (or paid actors, we're not sure) talking about all of the different things they love about their game machine of choice. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comAs the press filed in, Microsoft ran teaser trailers with Xbox owners (or paid actors, we're not sure) talking about all of the different things they love about their game machine of choice. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comThe press conference continued with a live demonstration of Epic Games' first-person shooter, Gears of War 2. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.com
Microsoft said that it would completely revamp the Xbox user experience, throwing out the current "blades" interface and replacing it with a sleeker, more functional design. Users will now have cute personalized avatars that represent them in the online world of Xbox 360. Now, when you game with your friends, your virtual selves will mix and mingle. Among the games that will use avatars include trivia titles like a new Xbox version of Scene It. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comGalaga Legions is one of the downloadable games for Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service that the company showed at the conference. After the press conference, a Microsoft executive said that South Park's creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were "very involved" in the creation of the game, but offered no more details. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comAnother casual, social gaming experience coming this holiday season to Xbox 360 is You're in the Movies, a game that uses the Xbox's camera attachment. Players act out scenes from movies while playing a variety of minigames, and when they're done, the game transposes their images into a few different trailers for bizarre B-movies. It's like playing Mad Libs with your whole body. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comWelsh singer/songwriter Duffy took the stage to introduce Lips, a karaoke game set for release this winter. She sang her song "Mercy," which will be included in the game. Lips will also allow players to plug in their iPod (or Zune!) and sing along to their own songs. The microphone controllers contain motion sensors, so players can swing them around to make tambourine noises as they sing. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comAlex Rigopulos, president and CEO of Rock Band-maker Harmonix, took the stage to announce a variety of surprise new songs that will appear in the next version of the game, slated for this fall. Guns N' Roses will release the first track from Chinese Democracy as a Rock Band 2 track. Bob Dylan and AC/DC will make their music-game debuts in this version of the game. And users will be able to import their Rock Band 1 tracks into the sequel, so they won't have to swap discs to play their dream concert. All told, Rigopulos said that over 500 different songs will be playable in Rock Band 2 by the end of 2008. The game will be released on Xbox 360 in September and other platforms later in the year. : Photo: Jim Merithew/Wired.comIn true E3 style, Microsoft closed their press conference with a bombshell announcement. Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix, announced that Final Fantasy XIII -- previously the single biggest exclusive upcoming title for Sony's PlayStation 3 -- would in fact launch on Xbox 360 simultaneously. The trailer itself contained much of the same pre-rendered footage that Square Enix showed at E3 two years ago, meaning that the game is likely still far away from its release date.

(We discussed the case here when it was filed.) Blizzard won on two arguments: first, that if a game is loaded into RAM, that can be considered an unauthorized copy of the game and as such a breach of copyright; second, that selling Glider was interfering with Blizzard's contractual relationship with its customers. The net effect? If you buy a game, you transfer rights to the game developer that they can sue you for."Read more of this story at Slashdot. Source: Slashdot | 14 Jul 2008 | 11:59 pm eBay Beats Tiffany In Net Trademark Casesm62704 notes a Reuters story reporting that eBay has beat Tiffany in court in a "knockout" decision. If this had gone the other way, not only would eBay be in trouble (especially after the loss of a similar case in France), but so would Net commerce as a whole. Tiffany seems certain to appeal. "All of Tiffany's trademark infringement claims against eBay were rejected — a knockout blow to the four-year-old lawsuit that had been closely watched by Internet companies as well as luxury goods makers seeking to stop the sale of counterfeit products online. Tiffany & Co. had alleged that eBay turned a blind eye to the sale of fake Tiffany silver jewelry on its site. EBay had countered that it was not in a position to determine which goods were knock-offs... and had said the jeweler did not adequately participate in eBay's programs that help brand owners prevent fraud. The judge... said he was 'not unsympathetic' to Tiffany and others who have invested in building their brands only to see them exploited on the Web. But he said the law was clearly on eBay's side."Read more of this story at Slashdot. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes. And Joi, who is the CEO of Creative Commons, adds... Exciting for Creative Commons is that the data (although not the music) used to produce this music video are being made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License on the Google Code site. The Source code to the software used is being made available under a Apache License 2.0.
