"I'm star struck and have always been. I'm obsessed by filmstars" - Karan Johar

Koffee and 'K' is his obsession and his Name is Karan. Known for his kind of "bubble gum cinema" Karan expresses his thoughts on Bollywood and honestly reveals the "dishonest honesty" about the Film Fraternity, including himself in his blog 'My Name Is Karan'. Bollywood Hungama brings you some excerpts of his blog, www.mynameiskaran.com. Excerpts from his first blog are as follows: Dated: June 19, 2008 "So let me start by saying, I am star struck, and have always been. I love, adore, and am obsessed by film stars. I like to befriend them, I enjoy meeting them, I love having them in my inbox, and more importantly, I'm constantly trying to add to my collection. There, I said it. For many years, I had a desire to be popular. It's like I wanted to win every congeniality contest in the world. It made me artificial. I didn't quite like that about myself but I also didn't know how to get out of that zone. I used to gush about women in terrifying clothes. Appreciate god awful celluloid performances. Hug and kiss people I wanted to send to jail and even applaud films that should never have been released. I had become the Godzilla of fake." Karan's latest entry in the blog has been about some obvious traits of the Bollywood Fraternity. Surely, Karan hasn't missed out on anything. This is a view completely from an insider. So here are the excerpts of the latest entry: Dated: July 11, 2008 "I love the film fraternity. I love everything about it. Nowhere in the world will you find such a cocktail of complexes, complexities, contradictions, and of course, charisma. We are unique and our DNA must be preserved for posterity. Why deny generations ahead of our vanity and our insanity? Pardon the rhyme; it's with good reason. So what makes us so special? Well, read on. In Denial: We deny our relationships, affairs, infidelities, and enmities. We love denial. God forbid if we started admitting to things, the speculation would stop, and we just can't have that. We like to be in the news, and to make sure of that we employ publicists who plant stories under our surveillance that we later deny with an absolute straight face. It's called "The Art of Convenient Alzheimer's." The truth is we love the invasion and we feed off the trash. We deny this of course. Star Hatings: Favorite conversation piece at fraternity affairs: critic bashing. It's more fashionable than bling (Bappi's back!) From saying they are bought to calling them biased, we don't leave a single stone unturned. We take all the critics' comments personally and feel it's a vendetta against us. Maybe we actually made a bad film??? Oh god, how could I have just said that? We never make bad films, we make "misunderstood cinema", understood? All this can change because all it takes is a 4 star review (5 stars would be pushing it) and paragraphs of gush and we're back on track. The next step is to give full-page ads in leading newspapers highlighting the critic's comments in "inverted commas." Double standards?? Don't be silly; we think it's our birthright. Disease of Delusion: The fastest spreading disease within the fraternity is the disease of delusions. It can give any viral a run for its medicine. We are delusional about the box office figures of our films, our current star status, our lover's fidelity, and our physical appearances (though thanks to Photoshop, that gets taken care of)… And the Loser is…: A very wise man once told me, (oh forget it, lets give credit where its due) Javed Akhtar once told me, "Take the awards seriously the year you get them." Year after year, we've been going on about the commercialization of our film awards. The rigged decisions, the lobbies and the camps, the jury villains and the vamps. Yet year after year, we land up in our shimmering saris, ill fitted gowns, and tacky tuxedos. The criterion for turning up is simple; either we're winning or performing. A combination of the two is ideal... So please allow us our quirks and shortcomings. We never claimed to be perfect; you put us on that pedestal. Chew on that while we go back to making movies, for what in the world is better than that." Saying all this, Karan seems to be using the blog to promote his own films and also the films he likes. Besides announcing his film, My Name Is Khan, he has also requested everyone to watch Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na. Well, if you found 'Koffee With Karan' entertaining then his blog 'My Name is Karan' only promises to continue the trend... Way to go KJo!

Kulraj Randhawa is addressed as Kareena on the sets of Mastang Mama

They will never stop calling Smriti Irani 'Tusli' even if Gautami Kapoor played 'Tulsi' in 'Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. And poor Amarr Upaddhyay no matter how many 'R's he added to his first name they still called him 'Mihir' whenever they saw him on the large screen. And now Kulraj Randhawa who makes her large-screen appearance in new-director Vikram Singh's Mastang Mama finds herself facing a similar identity crisis. On the sets of the movie that started shooting earlier this month, everyone calls Kulraj 'Kareena' Not that she resembles the Kapoor in any way. But Kulraj played the title role in a hit soap called Kareena Kareena three years ago. And she's still remembered by that name! Ruslaan Mumtaz who plays her leading man is amused and alarmed. "I didn't even know Kulraj has been on television. I'd wonder why everyone in the unit and even visitors on the sets kept calling her 'Kareena'. I thought it was because her character in Mastang Mama is as vivacious as Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met. Later I got to know it was because she had played a girl called 'Kareena' on TV." Ruslaan has decided never to do television. "Even if it means being jobless I'd rather not do television. Imagine being identified with some character for all your life!" On the plus side, Kulraj has learnt the value of time through television. Adds Ruslaan, "She works hard and she mixes on the sets like a buddy. In fact, Kulraj is my first buddy-co-star. Earlier with Hazel in Mera Pehla Pehla Pyar and Sheena in Tere Sang it was different. Kulraj is a buddy. In fact, Tanmay Cheda who plays my nephew and me constantly keep cadging her mobile to play video games on it. She doesn't mind. She is like one of the boys on the sets. I think that discipline comes from being on crowded television sets where actors don't have a chance to go back to their rooms between shots."

Anubhav Sinha's Kabootar to be premiered at the Osian Film Festival

Click above for more stills A new film about a new director Maqbool Khan's violent growing-up years in a small town in Rajasthan, is about to give the censor board the heebie-jeebies. And though the producer Anubhav Sinha suspects trouble ahead, the film's graphic language and strong violent content got an unexpected boost from French quarters. Says Anubhav, "Francis d'Silva who works closely with Luc Besson took a shine to the film Kabootar. He was instrumental in getting Kabootar into the Osian film festival. The film is being screened there on 17 July." Anubhav hopes the unexpunged screening would invoke enough appreciation to give the film a censorial head start. "Otherwise it might be ruthlessly chopped off." Kabootar directed by Anubhav Sinha's former assistant Maqbool Khan is arguably the most violent Hindi film ever made. Set in Dholpur in Rajasthan, it depicts the criminalization of teenagers in North India. 13 and 14-year old boys are shown as savage murderers and criminals. Says a source, "In Kabootar, the director Maqbool has made Vishal Bhardwaj's depiction of crime and atonement in Maqbool look like a fairytale." Says Sinha, "Kabootar is undoubtedly a blood-splattered film. But it's hugely emotional and intense. I'd place it in the same genre as Fernando Meirelles' City Of God about lost wayward kids….It's violent, intense and very brutal. But it's in the nature of things. That's what the theme demanded. It's the director Maqbool and his group of friends' story. All of them are dead now. Only Maqbool has survived to tell the tale. It's been selected in the competition section of the Osian Film Festival on the 17 July." The film gets its title from the game of kabatubaazi (pigeon fights). The main character is a kabutarbaaz who fosters and cultivates teenagers into a life of political and social crimes. The film's explicit dialogues and aggressive violence are bound to create immense censorial difficulties. Admits Anubhav, "It does have a lot of graphic language and that too involving kids. The censors are bound to be on their guard. But we must understand that the violence and strong language are determined by the subject. The Osian directorate has no problems with the strong content. But I'm getting ready for a long battle with the censors ahead. "

"I play a judge with sex on the mind" - Chunky Pandey

Chunky Pandey too has joined the bandwagon of celebrity judges. Along with Malaika Arora Khan, he would be judging celebrity contestants for the reality dance show 'Zara Nachke Dikha' which has kick started on Star One this week. "However, while Malaika has been roped in as the sexiest judge on television, I play the role of a judge who always has sex on the mind", quips Chunky Pandey while describing the show which is being touted as the 'war of the sexes'. Why 'war of the sexes'? Because 'Zara Nachke Dikha' has a format which would witness television actresses competing against the actors! While the girls team comprises of Delnaz Paul, Mouni Roy, Maninee Day, Rupali Ganguly, Karishma Tanna, Jennifer Winget and Sweeni Khare, the all boys gang includes Ali Asghar, Amit Tandon, Bakhtiyar Irani, Manish Goel, Chaitanya Chowdhury, Vikas Sethi Gaurav Chippra and Amey Pandya. "It is sheer fun to be sitting out there and being witness to such fabulous performances. Also, thankfully it would be a happy outing overall since till the very last episode, there won't be any elimination. I always like to have fun on and off the screen and thankfully the show's format allows me to be my witty self", says Chunky who is thoroughly enjoying a new phase of his career where he would be seeing more than half a dozen films of his releasing over next few months. However, coming back to the show, what really attracted him to get into the garb of a judge? "Let's be realistic here; things have changed since I made my big screen debut close to two decades back", Chunky gets serious here, "At that time television was 'just' a medium for entertainment with 2-3 programs calling for attention. Today, it is a huge arena out there. You have to be on TV if you are looking at enhanced visibility. I don't see any harm there at all. And lest one forgets, I was one of the pioneers of appearing on TV years back when stars shied away from doing so." Errr, when exactly? "Remember 'Superhit Muqabla' when you were a kid and wanted to watch something different from those routine Wednesday/Friday 'Chitrahaar'", says Chunky with mock amusement, "This was the time when Metro channel was launched and I was roped in as a host for 'Superhit Muqabla'. While Baba Sehgal kick started the show, I too hosted close to 20 episodes out of the 100 odd ones that had gone on air." Yes, one does remember that now. So how is he finding his stint as a judge? "Well, as I said earlier, 'Zara Nachke Dikha' is an interesting concept with Adam fighting against Eve. And the one who is having maximum fun is me. I have hosted TV shows in the past but being on the judge's chair gives you a different high altogether. And mind you, Malaika sitting next to you is always an added bonus", winks Chunky. On the movie front too, Chunky has a lot to look forward to. His upcoming releases are Daddy Cool, Sankat City, Paying Guest, Khalbali Hai Khalbali and Hello Darling.

Meanwhile, there's talk that even GOLMAAL RETURNS might be shifted ahead, although its producers, Shree Ashtavinayak, hasn't officially made a statement to that effect. While on release dates, UGLY AUR PAGLI, which was confirmed for July 25, has been moved ahead. It will now arrive on August 1.

Controversy's favourite child?

Shahid Kapur may be the most non-controversial around, but his name has been dragged in several controversies of late. To start with, Rajkumar Santoshi had approached Shahid for his new film, but after HALLA BOL flopped, Shahid decided against working with Santoshi. So much so that he refused to entertain Santoshi's calls. Fed up, Santoshi signed Ranbir Kapoor for the film in question. "It's very embarrassing to hear something like this. The reason why this project didn't work was because portions of the script were similar to JAB WE MET. We parted on an amicable note. I've great regards for Raj-ji and I would never ever avoid his calls," Shahid clarifies. Now Controversy No. 2. With Priyadarshan, it's a different story. During the making of CHUP CHUP KE, Priyan got a shock of his life when Shahid suggested that a particular scene be shot differently. Reportedly, Priyan told Shahid to mind his business. "Priyan-ji is a veteran, how could I tell him how to shoot a film? But, yes, we didn't hit off during the making of that film. I was uncomfortable… but I'd like to work with him again if he feels he has the right script for me," Shahid states. Controversy No. 3 pertains to Abbas-Mustan. Shahid has worked with the director duo in 36 CHINA TOWN and when they approached him for one of their productions, Shahid remained inaccessible. "We haven't discussed a film since quite some time. I would love to work with them, they're amongst my favourites. But, believe me, they haven't approached me for any of their films," Shahid clarifies. And finally, Ashutosh Gowariker. Reportedly, Shahid made the maker wait endlessly. An irritated Ashu eventually signed Harman Baweja. "Yes, we did meet, but he wanted immediate dates and since I had committed those days to Vishal Bhardwaj, I couldn't take up the offer. I'd love to work with him, I love his cinema," Shahid replies. The clarification -- the first of its kind from Shahid, exclusively on 'Bollywood Hungama' -- should put an end to the loose talk surrounding the actor.

Hansika, the cherubic actress who was seen opposite Himesh Reshammiya in Aap Kaa Surroor, is surely going places. While the bubbly actress is already a well known face in Bollywood, she has also managed to make a name for herself down South. In fact, Hansika was awarded the Best Debutante Award at the 55th Filmfare Awards (South) held in Chennai last week. What makes this award all the more special for Hansika is that she competed against 18 other actresses of Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films and came out triumphs! She won the award for her performance in the Telugu film Desamuduru which has run for more than 200 days and still continues to draw in an enthusiastic audience. Eesha Koppikhar part of the Miss Universe jury

The change in the spelling of her name surely seems to have worked for this Bollywood babe. We are talking about none other than actress Eesha Koppikhar (yes that’s how she now spells her name). Eesha received a rather pleasant surprise recently when she was asked to be one of the judges at the Miss Universe beauty pageant which took place in Vietnam today (July 14). Eesha thus becomes the first Bollywood actress to judge the prestigious Miss Universe contest. She initially couldn’t believe her luck and even thought someone was pulling a fast one on her; it was only when her Hollywood agent Simone Sheffield confirmed the news that Eshaa finally believed her. The next thing you know, Eesha was seen packing her bags to Vietnam. At the Miss Universe beauty pageant, Eesha was hobnobbing with some real big celebrities such as Donald Trump Jr, Louis Licari (international hair stylist) Mel B (of Spice Girl band) and Jerry Springer (who will be hosting the show).

Mallika slaps, kisses and doodles in Ugly Aur Pagli

Click above for more stills Whatever Madame Mallika Sherawat does, makes for interesting reading. Mallika has this habit of doodling. In fact, whenever she is sitting idle, she starts scribbling on a piece of paper without realizing it. On the sets of her forthcoming film Ugly Aur Pagli, her real life habit of doodling inspired director Sachin Khot to incorporate it even in her reel-life character too. Its no wonder then that Mallika's character in the film, Kuhu, is seen extensively doodling and every time she doodles; Ranvir is seen fantasizing about the things she has written on paper. Says debutant director Sachin Khot, "When I saw her making all sorts of designs on a piece of paper and that too subconsciously, I loved the thought and concept so much that I decided to incorporate it even in her on-screen character. The only addition that I have made in the doodling is that instead of designs, she doodles words." Her doodling however leads to lot of hilarious scenes in the film. "Mallika's character doodles weird stories and she uses Ranvir as the guinea pig to listen to all of them. If that was not enough, she also plays music on her ipod and plugs it into his ears to create the background score. This actually leads Ranvir into a fantasy world and he starts imaging the stories", says Sachin. "This whole idea fits into the film completely as Mallika plays a 21st century woman who is the one calling the shots in the relationship and Ranvir plays a loser who follows her completely", he adds. Well, now apart from the 99 slaps and 1 kiss, we also have Mallika's doodling to look forward to in Ugly Aur Pagli.

"Abhishek goes mad on stage" - Riteish Deshmukh

It is not very often that you see Riteish Deshmukh give interviews and not crack a joke, and the reason is that when he gave this one, he was down with a viral infection, cold, and flu. But as promised, he did not turn his back and came to promote his first world tour, 'The Unforgettable Tour', along with his fellow co-stars, the Bachchans and Preity Zinta in Mumbai last Friday. One of the very few bankable stars of today, this actor has a habit of delivering his best even when he is at his worst, be it on the big screen, live on the stage or in this quick chat with Bollywood Hungama's Devansh Patel. What happened to your voice? It's sounding a bit hoarse? I'm not well yaar! Down with a viral and shooting, rehearsals and no time to rest. Anyway, then let's start with the interview. Don't you feel that you are the odd one out from all your colleagues? Will you be providing that added masti in the tour? Odd one out, I don't know. But it's a good mixture right from the senior stars like Amitabh Bachchan, to younger stars like Abhishek and me and you have immense popularity of Aishwarya Rai all over and Preity Zinta who have been around for a long time now. So you can say I'm the odd one out because I'm the youngest. But overall, it should be fun because the kind of songs I'm going to perform are also the kind of image I have. I'm the odd one out because I'm the youngest. Are you going to start the tour by dancing on Bluffmaster's 'Bure Bure Hum Hum Hum Shaitan, Zaara Zaara Bachna Re Humse'? (Laughs) Wow! That's a good suggestion. But I am sure if I'll be doing this number, I'll put in as much of enthusiasm as I can. As an actor, you've played more mischief than any of your co-stars have, except Mr. Bachchan, but are we going to see some serious moves this time around? You know, I'm trying to do different stuff where primarily I'm doing Aladin and the Mystery of the Lamp which is not a comedy. Then I move on to a more romantic side of me after my first film. So trying to venture out in romance after a long time. And comedies will keep on being an integral part of my career. As far as the tour is concerned, I am going to be seriously different. Wait and watch! Abhishek is just fantastic. He has his own style, then he goes mad on the stage and I'm looking forward to that madness. From the entire Unforgettable gang, you've only managed to shake a leg with Abhishek Bachchan. Tell us something about this 'Bluffmaster'. How good is he? He is just fantastic. He has his own style. The Abhishek fan following that started since 'Dus Bahane' and 'Right Here Right Now' was because he brought in that coolness which no other actor got in Hindi films. This good looking, tall guy rapping songs and having great screen presence became a cult. Then he goes mad on the stage and I'm looking forward to that madness. How difficult was it to train under the perfectionist called Shiamak Davar? You are right. Shiamak is a perfectionist. The best part about it is that he designs songs for the actors and he knows. He won't give a difficult step but steps that will look good on the actor. You have to see it to believe it. He likes doing different things every time he is on stage with his actors and 'The Unforgettable Tour' will prove exactly that. Are you going to spike your hair? And what sort of different and funny costumes we are going to see you in? Loads of costumes yaar! My designer for this tour is Shiraz. Stage costumes are very different. There is not going to be a normal shirt. There'll be shine and glitter and you'll not dare to think of wearing such costumes out on the road. As far as my hair is concerned, I'll be spiking my hair definitely and doing all sorts of different hair styles, cutting my hair and coloring it. In addition, for 45 days, I am not committed for any films and thus I'm not bothered about my hairdo. You were last seen in London at the Zee Cine Awards 2008, which took place at the Excel Docklands. O2 centre is ten times bigger than Excel Docklands. Having said that, only Elton John and Madonna have managed to fill up the arena so far. Will this tour achieve the impossible? As I said, I'm the new one here. This is my first worldwide tour. I had no idea about how big the arena was and we were not informed about that, how was it going to be filled up, etc. I am sure Wizcraft must have come up with some sort of planning regarding that. I'm just glad to be performing where famous international celebrities have performed before. For 45 days, I am not committed for any films and thus I'm not bothered about my hairdo. Are you going to perform solo on the stage or will it be with other stars? Of course I am going to perform solo on stage. My entire first act is a solo act with all the songs from the films I've been a part of. There are only portions of me where I share the stage with other actors. So it's a great mix. Which song would you prefer dancing to alone on stage? Lots of yaar! There are songs from Cash, Heyy Babyy, songs like 'Dil Mein Bajee Guitar', etc. There are songs from Cash, Heyy Babyy, songs like 'Dil Mein Bajee Guitar', etc. Do you feel proud of the fact that you are a part of 'The Unforgettable Tour' or is it like any other tour? As a child, I never thought that I'd be an actor. Now that was past; I am here in front of you and that is the present. Being an actor and then going on a world tour is another unbelievable thing and then being a part of the tour that is headed by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and friends like Abhishek, Aishwarya, Preity, and Akshay (with whom I've worked in my last film Heyy Babyy) is another. Then there is Madhuri Dixit. What can I say about her? I have been a huge fan of her since I was a kid and used to have a huge crush on her. So as the title suggests, all this is going to be just 'Unforgettable'. And to answer your question, I do feel proud. I've performed once in London with Salman and Shah Rukh. Obviously, the crowd came to see SRK and Salman but to be a part and feel the response was truly great Your female fans will be desperate to see you perform and act on stage. But will you reciprocate to them by singing and dancing to 'Ae Chori, Zara Nachke Dikha' from Cash? (Laughs) Of course, I'd love to start off by saying that. That's going to be one of the songs I'm performing on. Look out girls! You've travelled to many cities around the world with your films. Where are you looking forward to perform the most? I think, London for sure because it's a place where there are not only lots of Indians but even non Indian people in the form of Bangladeshi's and Pakistani's who love our films and songs and give us their undying love and support. I've performed once in London with Salman and Shah Rukh. Obviously, the crowd came to see SRK and Salman but to be a part and feel the response was truly great. That was a few years ago. But as you said that O2 centre is ten times bigger, I hope this show too is ten times bigger than all the shows taken place there. Any message for all your London fans then? Well, all I can say is, get ready for full on dhamaal and masti.

Konkona Sen Sharma opposite Paresh Rawal in Sanjay Chhel's Fantastic

There can never be a better title for a film than Fantastic when you have ace actors like Paresh Rawal, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Javed Jaffrey coming together for it. Sanjay Chhel announces his next film, Fantastic, which is being produced by Percept Pictures. "Fantastic is a romantic-comedy film. The film has a deadly combination of some great actors, namely, Paresh Rawal, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neha Dhupia, Rahul Khanna, and Javed Jaffrey", says Sanjay Chhel, the director of the film. The most intriguing fact about the film is that Konkona will be paired opposite Paresh Rawal. "Konkona will be playing a role of a typical woman from today's society and is paired opposite Pareshji, that's not all; she also gets paired opposite Rahul Khanna, who plays a millionaire in the film, and opposite Javed Jaffrey as well. Neha Dhupia's character in the film is also something to watch out for. Rahul will shed his image of a simple look as he will be showcased as a flamboyant and maverick kind a character, his looks will be terrific and stylized; in short he will look different." So what is Fantastic all about? "Of course you do not expect me to tell you the story now. But I'll tell you this, it revolves around the society, page 3, lifestyle etc. I have written both the screenplay and lyrics for the songs as well", says Sanjay. This is part of the 3-film deal with the Percept Pictures right? "Yah, I will be doing two other films with them one is an action comedy and the other is a sarcastically comedy flick. At present the films are still under scripting stages so there's nothing more to say to it." Fantastic is scheduled to go on floors by August end; meanwhile Sanjay Chhel also is geared up with Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam, which releases on August 22.
