Mars Defends Americans’ Right to Walk Around Times Square in Underwear

Photo: Getty Images

Oh, they're clever. We had been rooting for the Naked Cowboy in his fight against Mars, the parent company of M&M's, whom the Tightie-Whitied One sued for trademark infringement after the company placed an ad of an M&M in Naked Cowboy gear in Times Square without even offering the dude a lifetime supply of Twix, not that he would have eaten it, anyway. Why? Because as annoying as he is, the Naked Cowboy is an institution, and he's the little guy in this situation, and when we look at fortysomething buff ass out there working hard and making sure a carb never passes his lips, well, we just hope for him that someday he will get to a place where he can retire and eat whatever he wants. It's what we want for you, too. But Mars struck back recently with a big-picture defense that we can't help but admire.
They are arguing that Burck doesn't have the rights to trademark his signature "get-up" consisting of only a "white cowboy hat, white boots, white underpants and an acoustic guitar," according to the filing.

That's right. Mars is not just trying to squirm out of paying the Naked Cowboy, they are defending American freedoms. Everyone has a right to strut around in tightie whities, and Goddamn it if over at Intel we're not going to go ahead and exercise that right right now. Who's with us? Chris? Chris?

Has ‘Us Weekly’ Peaked?

Jann Wenner

Us Weekly owner Jann Wenner, pondering change.Photo: Getty Images

Today we learn half of the logic behind the mystifying rumors of Jann Wenner's bid to sell his Us Weekly to Condé Nast. The dizzy climb of the celebrity magazine's circulation appears to have peaked — for the first time in eight years, it had trouble meeting its rate base of 1.9 million copies. According to Keith Kelly, editor Janice Min attributes the slight dip to "record gas and food prices," which, quite frankly, is probably completely legitimate. Still, Wenner probably saw what was coming and realized that America's quenchless thirst for celebrity frivolity is petering out (damn you, economy! You ruin everything). It makes sense, then, that he would try to sell before things for his popular magazine really go south.

But that's only one part of the equation: What about Condé Nast? Why would they be the right buyer for Us? Will Annie Leibowitz be shooting Spears-family baby pictures? Steven Klein catching up with Trista and Ryan on their second honeymoon? Dominick Dunne covering the divorce trial of Heidi and Spencer?

Actually, come to think of it, that's a great idea.

Jon Favreau Will Direct ‘Iron Man 2,’ Thanks to America

Photo: WireImage

Internet 1, Agency 0: It turns out that nerd outrage on the blogosphere holds significant sway in the Hollywood halls of power, as Marvel has finally reached a deal with prodigal director Jon Favreau to helm Iron Man 2. Whether or not the studio actually buckled under fan pressure to pay the man his money, you can totally congratulate your nerd friends on making this movie awesome. [DHD]

Esparza Plows New Fields: Raúl Esparza, will play producer Charlie Fox in David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow revival, joining and likely totally acting circles around Jeremy Piven. [NYT]

HBO's Pilot Frenzy: HBO has a fever, and the only cure is more cowbell — er, pilots. First up is the hour-long drama Treme (from The Wire's David Simon), about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, along with Martin Scorsese's twenties Atlantic City drama, Boardwalk Express. Jessica Cutler's Washingtonienne will also go into production, thus fulfilling the final step of her business plan: (1) Be hot, (2) have scandalous sex with a politician, (3) blog about it, 4)PROFIT. [Variety]

Brown Has a Bone to Pick: Actor-singer Chris Brown is in final negotiations to star with Matt Dillon, Idris Elba, and T.I. in Bone Deep, a pretty standard cops-and-robbers heist movie from Screen Gems. Standard, that is, until we started imagining the possibility of Brown-T.I. musical dance numbers. [HR]

Heavy Metal Sinks: It's not often that high-profile movies are immediately put into pseudo-turnaround, but that's what's sort of happening to David Fincher's Heavy Metal. According to the animation studio involved, Paramount felt the project was "too risqué" and so the rocktastic adventure is on hold while Fincher and publisher Kevin Eastman shop it to other studios. Come on, Paramount, it's not like nudity is the defining aspect of this movie to the extent that a parody would be solely devoted to boobs. [EW]

Lacroix

Leave it to Christian Lacroix to find elegance fit for the glitz and glamour of couture makeup buried in the dirt, as it were. "The inspiration for the Lacroix Couture show was powerful beetles and the praying mantis," makeup artist Stéphane Marais divulges. Honing in on the pure beauty of the insects' colors, Marais relied on metallic greens to offset what he describes as a "big, black theatrical eye." "For the strong touch, I applied a turquoise green eyeliner liquid in the inner corner of the eyes…to get the power of fascinating predators." Fascinating predators, eh? Now that's fierce. think kates moss is naughty? meet uschi obermaier

Eightmiles

Kate Moss gets a bad rap. Sure, she may set the bar for wild-child style in these staid times, but Moss has got a lot of nada on Uschi Obermaier. The sexually adventurous German supermodel came to fame while living at the Berlin commune that seeded the Baader-Meinhof gang, spent the better part of the sevenites hopping between Mick's bed and Keith's as a member of the Rolling Stones groupie scene, and then turned down a star-making movie contract with Carlo Ponti in order to travel the third world in a customized bus with the self-promoting, brothel-owning, semi-unhinged love of her life. Now Obermaier is the subject of "Eight Miles High," a bullet-point biopic that goes into limited release today. Suitably stunning newcomer Natalia Avelon plays Obermaier, often in the nude, and you can see why she gave Pallenberg a run for the money. Better yet, when Avelon is dressed, you can see why brands such as Gucci and Chloé decided to resuscitate radical rock 'n' roll chic for Fall: Uschi Obermaier may have been a bad, bad girl, but she looked damn good.

Gwyneth Paltrow Is Skipping Sensuous Promotions

Photo: Getty Images, nytimes.com

Estée Lauder is determined to keep its new fragrance Sensuous from getting lost on the fragrance shelf amongst Paris Hilton's Can Can, Kim Kardashian's scent, and all the other celebrity-licensed products out there oversaturating the fragrance market. So they've hired four high-profile spokeswomen to endorse it (Gwyneth Paltrow, Hilary Rhoda, Carolyn Murphy, and Elizabeth Hurley — as if you hadn't heard) and they're using them to promote it like crazy. Only it seems one of them isn't showing up to work as much as the other three. Guess who it is?! Okay, we'll give you a hint: It's the most famous one of the bunch. Gwyneth Paltrow.

Somehow Estée Lauder wrangled a spot for the ladies to open the stock market earlier this week. Afterward, they even talked up the fragrance for three minutes on the Fox Business Network while traders leered in the background and the male Fox anchor made unnecessary comments about their hotness. Guess who missed out on this bit of awkwardness? Gwyneth. She was spotted going over to Madonna's house that day, so we figured she skipped the stock exchange to talk out the whole A-Rod mess with Madge.

But today we noticed a Sensuous ad on the New York Times' "Fashion & Style" page featuring videos of its spokeswomen explaining what "sensuous" means to them. Guess who skipped that too? Gwyneth. Could Gwyneth be so lazy she refused to take a few minutes to shoot the spot? Or could she be so diva she refuses to appear on camera explaining what "sensuous" means to her? Or could Madonna be in such dire straits she can't spare Gwyneth's shoulder for an extra few moments? For a fun change, we'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she's just busier than the other girls. Right Gwynny?

Good News For Bike Lovers

Photo: Getty Images

Strap on your helmet and roll up your pant legs: it’s free bike week! Coming right after the city's call for bike-sharing feasibility plans, the Forum for Urban Design and its partners are launching The New York Bike Share Project 2008. Starting today and running through Monday, pedal-philiacs can cruise around town (provided “town” is somewhere below 23rd Street) on a hybrid cycle free of charge for 30 minutes. The bikes can then be returned to any of the four bike-share stations set up downtown — like Zipcar, without the carbon emissions. The Forum organized a similar, if smaller, event last year. Its executive director, Lisa Chamberlain, cites the project's success as influencing the city’s plan to explore bike sharing. “The idea last year, as well as this year, was to introduce the concept to New York, to public officials as well as the public at large," she said. The program obviously got the attention of Janette Sadik-Khan, commissioner for the New York City Department of Transportation.

In a statement released by her office yesterday, Sadik-Khan called on businesses to submit reports detailing how New York City bike sharing would work — and what it would cost. “If feasible and adopted, such a program would create a network of publicly accessible bicycles at minimal cost, and could provide an important transportation link at transit hubs and commercial and social areas — greatly increasing mobility citywide,” it said. Bike sharing has had limited success in smaller, outdoorsy communities like Madison, Wisconsin, and Portland, Oregon, as well as in Europe (of course). Recently, larger cities are showing interest — D.C. unveiled a program last month; Philadelphia is investigating one. Proponents believe public bikes can cut down on pollution, battle obesity, and provide an alternate form of transportation in a city full of deadlocked streets and packed subways.

“This is not a bike rental, touristy thing. This concept is for people who live and work and interact in the city daily and need to get from place to place,” says Chamberlain, who herself would be riding a bike were she not four-and-a-half months pregnant. ("I had to take a cab this morning across town and it was such a drag," she said. "You just sit in traffic. I could have biked across the entire island of Manhattan in a lot less time with a lot less aggravation.")

According to the statement issued by the DOT, only one percent of commuter trips in New York are done on bike — a number they hope to double by 2015. Intrepid souls eager to raise the rate, borrow a bike this week at a variety of locations listed on the Project's
website. —Kate Dailey

The Brooklyn Vintage Boutique Where Pat Field Shops

Vintage boutique Frock, an Orchard Street staple, opened a second outpost in Park Slope last week. The store is known for its versatile collection of high-end vintage designer pieces, curated by Alexandra "Lexi" Sacchi and Evan Ross. Designers shop there all the time, and just yesterday stylist Patricia Field pulled from the new Brooklyn store for Ugly Betty, which she styles. "Each piece at Frock is carefully picked for a specific reason — there is something about it, outside of its label, that elevates it in our minds," Sacchi told us. "This is why we are a true boutique, in the sense that the pieces are carefully selected and arranged." We peeked in the store to check it out and discovered the stock at the Brooklyn store more than holds a candle to its sister Lower East Side shop. Here are some of our favorite items:

Oscar de la Renta Print Dress (seventies)

Why we like it: The print on this spaghetti-strap floral silk gown is bold and gorgeous.

Chanel Dress (seventies)
Price: $975
Why we like it: The pattern of speckled gold, bronze, and navy metallics is amazing on this long-sleeved red silk-chiffon dress and matching belt.

Emanuel Ungaro Polka-dot Dress (eighties)

Jason Giambi’s Mustache Has Been Vanquished!

Jason Giambi David Wright

Left: Jason Giambi. Right: David Wright. If you had to have that explained to you, you're only reading this post for the mustache content.Photo: Getty Images

As we’ve noted, Jason Giambi’s mustache is losing steam. And despite the team’s best efforts — it handed out 20,000 fake ‘staches at yesterday’s game — it looks like the only good that came of it is the first known photo of Mike Mussina having fun (see photo number three, here). According to MLB.com, the “Final Vote” to determine the last All-Star spot came down to Evan Longoria of the Rays and Jermaine Dye of the White Sox in the American League (Longoria won, in the end). In the National League voting, even baby-faced Met David Wright — who we’re pretty sure couldn’t grow a mustache if he tried — made it further than Giambi, though he lost out in the end to Milwaukee outfielder Corey Hart. There’s probably a lesson here, but we’re not sure our friends at the American Mustache Institute would be happy to learn it. —Joe DeLessio

Antonio Banderas Returning to Broadway in ‘Don Giovanni’?

Photo: Getty Images

Sure, Lin-Manuel Miranda invited Antonio Banderas backstage at Wednesday’s matinee of In the Heights, but he’s not offering him a part in the show yet. “Uh, our cast is a big happy family, and, uh, Antonio’s a wonderful guy,” Miranda stammered when we asked at the launch of Banderas’s fragrance, Blue Seduction for Women. “But who knows? Hopefully we’ll run a long time and Antonio will be part of the Heights universe in some way,” he added diplomatically. Banderas arrived and a gaggle of reporters swarmed, but we managed to find out that he’s got his own plans for a Broadway return. “I am working with David Leveaux, who was the director of Nine, on that possibility," Banderas told us. The project, he said, is Don Giovanni. Wait — is Banderas singing opera on Broadway? Or performing in the José Saramago play Don Giovanni we didn't know existed until we saw it on Wikipedia? Alas, his publicist whisked him away. —Bennett Marcus

Once and for All: How Do You Pronounce MGMT?

Photo: Jon Bergman

We've enjoyed MGMT's album Oracular Spectacular since it came out last fall, but with the band playing at McCarren Pool later this month — and the subject of a profile in our own magazine this week — we realized we still don't know for sure how to pronounce the band's name. Is it "Management," which we've heard used to be their name before some other band laid claim to it? Is it just the letters pronounced in order — "Em Gee Em Tee"? Or is it some mumbled version of "Management" with the vowels removed ("Mij-mit")?

Some blog commenters claim it's one thing; others claim it's another. Rolling Stone says it's "Management." David Letterman says it's "Em Gee Em Tee." Time for some totally necessary Vulture detective work!

We called the band's label, Columbia, and a publicist told us it's definitely pronounced "Em Gee Em Tee." This seems to be confirmed by this video, in which MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden pronounces it that way. But we wouldn't put it past these guys to change it again, to "Magma" or something.

tucker: summer, solved

Tucker2

I once read a reference to a study that claimed to show that children who grow up in cold climates do better on intelligence tests than those who grow up in warm ones; something to do with all the extra bits of clothing they have keep track of. Sounds dubious, but being Canadian and having been burdened with mitts, scarves, and various other layers of wool for most of my life, I didn't question it too closely. Come summer, however, I don't want to waste IQ points pondering any sort of complicated accoutrements. I want getting dressed to be effortless, the way putting on one of Gaby Basora's Tucker dresses or blouses is effortless. Throw on one of her signature patterned silk dresses or blouses and you need very little else to feel ready to head out the door. And that's something that even those of us accustomed to dealing with a whole lot more can easily get used to.

Queens: Okay, once again, no identifiable hood here, but how could we not note that the good people of Q-boro want to do terrible things to the man who stomped on his own beautiful, fluffy, white Persian kitty, breaking her jaw, three ribs, and a hind leg? ‘Ace Ventura 3’ Might Not Be the Masterpiece You'd Hoped

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you really liked Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Furthermore, let's say that you really, really liked Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. We're here to tell you that, sadly, there is still absolutely no reason to believe you will have any interest in Ace Ventura 3, supposedly being released this fall. Jim Carrey is not involved (and good for him), so you might logically wonder: Who can possibly star in an Ace Ventura movie without Ace Ventura?

Why, Ace Ventura's son, Ace Ventura Jr.

And who could play him? Why, Josh Flitter, the kid who was Robin Williams's wisecracking sidekick in the truly terrible License to Wed. That's right — the kid who managed to come off like an overeager Virginia ham even while acting next to Robin Williams.

Obviously the Ace Ventura trilogy is not the Godfather trilogy, so it's foolish to get all upset about the third episode spoiling everything. But seriously, this is the kind of movie parents will take their kids to but not stay for, where farting can be suggested, as long as it's not prolonged. Not since The Love Guru has a movie so firmly declared its intent to be lousy before it even gets out of the gate. Just watching the commercials is going to stiffen the resolve of the voluntarily childless. Look at all the posters! Animals! Shades! Animals wearing shades! Humping hamsters! We never thought we'd say such a thing, but, Jim Carrey, why have you forsaken us? —Linda Holmes

Fashionable Men Are Wearing High-Waters and Cutoffs This Summer

Flood pants by Thom Browne and cutoffs by Michael Bastian.Photo: imaxtree, Courtesy of Michael Bastian

The men's high-waters Thom Browne introduced to the runway in 2004 are catching on this season. It only took four years! But according to The Wall Street Journal the lag time between seeing men's trends on the runways and then on the streets is shortening. And two of the strongest fashion-forward men's trends catching on this summer are happening below the belt, and they're rather silly: ankle-exposing pants and cutoff shorts.

Browne says the short pant is not actually meant to be as short as he showed them on the runways. He told The Wall Street Journal:

"Sometimes you see guys with their trousers and you wonder who their tailor is … they're way too long," he says. "I tried to play with that and do the total opposite." The perfect pant length, Mr. Browne adds, hits the top of one's shoe, with no break, or crease across the lower pant leg.

Going even higher up the leg, today's "Styles" section in the Times highlights the cutoff trend. Apparently men have gotten so comfortable wearing fancy shorts, madras shorts, shorts with embroidered lobsters, and plaid shorts, shorts had gotten stale, and a new trend was needed. Enter: cutoffs. Menswear designer Michael Bastian says they're one of his best sellers every season. Michael Macko, fashion director at Details, says they're "just cooler, more casual."

If you want to properly rock a cutoff (God help us), be extra careful if you have the zeal to make them yourself. They should neither be baggy nor so long that they resemble clam-diggers. And don't show too much thigh either. The shorts should rise one to three inches above the knee with probably about a seven-inch inseam. To achieve the perfect cutoff, measure your inseam while wearing your pants, then cut up the seams. Slightly cut the pant with a razor blade and then rip them off. Make sure the front and back are equal lengths. Apparently looking a bit sloppy is quite a complicated thing.

For styling suggestions, don't miss the New York Times' slideshow of a man wearing cutoffs the proper way while hanging laundry and eating pink ice cream. We mean, what do you do in your cutoffs?

what rot: anya gallaccio and chantal akerman in london

Ag3

Classic still-life painters used organic material as subject matter to capture the beauty and heighten viewers' awareness of the fragility of life. Anya Gallaccio achieves the same paradoxical ends by bringing products such as organic chocolate, sugar, and fresh fruit into the gallery. The juxtaposition of the decaying and withering of the natural materials and the steadfast nature of the precious metals and other conventional art media that Gallacio uses illustrates life's fleeting pleasures. Beginning tomorrow at the Camden Arts Centre in London, new work by Gallacio is paired with two installations and screenings of classic films by legendary director Chantal Akerman. Both artists are fascinated by the passage of time and our futile efforts to arrest it—catch this exhibit before the opportunity dies away.

Our IT Guy Is First in Line for the New iPhone

This is our IT guy. If Outlook crashes today, we're
screwed.Photo: Al Lee

Though the iPhone freaks have been lining up outside the Fifth Avenue Apple Store since last weekend, anxiously awaiting tomorrow's release of that shiny new toy everyone keeps talking about, the Apple store in Soho — our hood — hasn't seen much action. That is, until 7:30 a.m. this morning, when Robert Lisbon set up camp and proudly laid claim to the title of First Person in Line. And, coincidentally, he happens to be one of our talented, genius IT guys — he's using a vacation day to chill out on Prince Street and be That Guy. When it came to our attention that we actually knew That Guy, we had to ask him for some reports from the scene. Herewith, his collected observations:

• "A lot of people are stopping and asking if I can hold them a spot for when they come back around four. Or they're taking down my number to call later and see how long the line is — they wanna use me as a watchperson."

• "I just had a guy try to sell me a bootleg (Chinese) iPhone saying it's the new 3G one. He wanted $500 for it."

• "Four journalists have come up to me to write stories."

• "Why am I out here? I have no sense! I'm comfortable. I ordered food from SeamlessWeb. I've got my chopsticks. Japanese Fusion."

• "Tourists are taking video and pictures of me. Someone wanted to hold my hand and take a — wait, sorry, someone just asked me again if I could hold them a spot and they could call me."

• "Mac Geniuses are giving me a little grief because I'm on an IBM Thinkpad."

• "A police car just drove by, and the cop gave me a thumbs-up."

• "Whoopi Goldberg just patted me on the shoulder and said, 'Good job!'"

Does this mean Whoopi's an iPhone fan? We really can't see her fussing with the touch screen. —Jessica Coen

Defending Warren Beatty's AFI Award

Warren Beatty at the AFI presentation.Photo: Getty Images

Last night USA Network televised the ceremony in which Warren Beatty was given an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award. Now Popwatch's Christian Blauvelt isn't so sure Beatty deserved it. According to Blauvelt, Beatty has "the thinnest filmography of any star of his stature." More specifically, Blauvelt has two arguments against Beatty's award: (1) he hasn't made nearly as many movies in the last 30 years as, say, Robert Duvall and (2) some of the movies he has made were bad. Now, we never even knew before how strongly we felt on this issue, but Blauvelt's post made us want to defend Warren Beatty. Who knew we cared so much about Beatty, the only guy with fourteen Academy Award nominations ever to be accused of having a "thin filmography"?

Blauvelt claims that Duvall "has made almost 65 films" since 1978, to Beatty's eight. (The number looks suspiciously like the result of looking up "Robert Duvall" on IMDb, going down through 1978, counting all TV movies, video games, cameos, and other detritus). Kevin Bacon, using the same measure, has made 64 "films" in that period of time — and none of his are video games. Get ready for your AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, Kevin Bacon!

As to uneven quality? Blauvelt points out that, in addition to Bonnie and Clyde, Reds, and Dick Tracy, Beatty made Ishtar and Love Affair, which is a fair point. So fair that it almost pains us to mention Duvall's associations with Deep Impact, Phenomenon, and the Demi Moore version of The Scarlet Letter. (Forgot all about that one, didn't you?)

But the kicker is this: "Call me a film snob, but I'm even a bit of a skeptic when it comes to Bonnie [and Clyde]. Part of me thinks the film just rips off French New Wave movies that did it better, such as Breathless, Jules and Jim, and Pierrot le fou." As is explained in Pictures at a Revolution — written by Blauvelt's EW colleague Mark Harris — the Bonnie screenwriters explicitly set out to make an "American French New Wave film," and they doggedly (and almost successfully) pursued Truffaut to direct. The idea that connecting the finished product to the French New Wave would make you a "film snob" is endearingly self-deprecating, but not very realistic.

Look, Warren Beatty is, deservedly, a legend. Like every producer and actor, he's made his share of stinkers, but one of the reasons he's a legend is that for the most part he made the stinkers on the same terms he made his masterpieces: his own. That he was able to overcome the studio system that wanted to cast him as an empty pretty boy is why he's a legend. And Blauvelt better be careful; We kind of think Warren Beatty is going to show up with a bunch of thugs at the EW offices to shoot his ninth movie since 1978, What My Shoe Tastes Like, As Told by Christian Blauvelt. —Linda Holmes

Old Bag Uma Thurman Is Really Lucky She Found Someone to Marry Her

Grateful Uma.Photo: Getty Images

Whew. Good thing Uma Thurman was able to trick "Arki" Busson into marrying her! She really got in there under the wire. After her divorce from Ethan Hawke, a "source" cattily told today's U.K's Daily Mail, Uma "all of a sudden…found herself all alone with two children and, at 35, facing up to the fear that in Hollywood terms she was over the hill." Thank God she met Arki! How else would the multimillionairess support herself and her two poor children? "Men have let her down in a big way," says the source. "So to find a genuine, charitable guy like Arki, who is so obviously crazy about her, is a blessing — and she knows it." Seriously! Especially since she is a total failure at life. First of all, how could she have let go of that prize, Ethan Hawke? And not many men would deign to marry a 38-year-old, two-time divorcée, even if she was a highly intelligent, surprisingly ageless, totally rich movie star, another "friend" who probably has never met Arki's ex Elle Macpherson in her life notes in the Mail. Lucky Arki's so "charitable."

Michael McGarry’s Spiderman is part of a show of contemporary South African art at David Krut Projects, through July 30, which attempts to move beyond South Africa's pesky political past and inject a little humor into the air. We’re not so much seeing humor in this version of Spidey who seems to have moved from fighting crime to office work. Rather, in his nondescript suit and, well, that paper-bag helmet, he looks a little nostalgic for the days when he’d be swinging from this bleak roof. A Peek at the Comme des Garçons–Louis Vuitton Handbag Collaboration

Photo: Courtesy of Louis Vuitton

Behold! A fruit of Comme des Garçons' handbag collaboration with Louis Vuitton. To celebrate Louis Vuitton's 30th year in Tokyo, Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo designed a limited-edition line of six handbags in the signature Louis Vuitton monogram pattern. We confess we kind of expected the bag to have a little more oomph — we know Kawakubo wanted to keep the monogram pattern classic and all, but we would have loved to see her make it over, Murakami style. Nonetheless, we're digging the Über-functional, avant-garde handles. So many options for carrying and hanging.

The collection will be available for special order exclusively at the Louis Vuitton pop-up shop starting September 4 in the Tokyo Comme des Garçons store. Good luck getting there and getting your paws on one.

See David Gordon Green’s Early Short Film ‘Physical Pinball’ Before Getting Baked at ‘Pineapple Express’

Next week BAM will present All the Real Americans: The World of David Gordon Green, an awesome retrospective that will present not only all of Green’s features, but also films selected by the director himself that he considers influences on his work (Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Last Picture Show, etc.). The series will end with a highly anticipated sneak preview of Green’s latest, the Judd Apatow–produced action-comedy Pineapple Express on July 24. (You can read an interview we did with Green back in March here.) In honor of this retro, we figured we’d present Physical Pinball, one of the terrific shorts Green did while a student at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Set in the southern junkyard milieu familiar to anyone who’s seen the director’s feature debut, George Washington, it’s a coming-of-age story about a young tomboy who realizes she’s turning into a woman, and about how she and her fast-talking auto-mechanic father try to deal with it. Displaying all the warmth, humor, and improvisatory poetry of Green’s best work, it makes quite clear that its creator was headed for some sort of greatness. —Bilge Ebiri

Who Is Alicia Marie, A-Rod’s ‘Muscle Gal Pal’?

Brooke Astor

Alicia Marie and her boyfriend, John Rocker, last year.Photo: Getty Images

The busty woman smiling with Alex Rodriguez on the cover of the Daily News today is Alicia Marie. She's a fitness model, meaning she appears in magazines like Flex, Muscle & Fitness, and Ironman — but she's also a champion bodybuilder and TV personality. The News describes her as A-Rod’s “muscle gal pal.” But I’ve known her for years as Alicia, John Rocker’s girlfriend a and sports blogger. It’s no surprise she’s making headlines for her time with A-Rod — she really is quite muscular — but readers should take her at her word when she says their “friendship” was just that. Alicia Marie is the type of overgrown innocent who would appeal to A-Rod; she might be the world’s nicest, most normal media-savvy bodybuilder who dates athletes, a club that’s less exclusive than you might think.

Alicia Marie once admitted to me that she had set up an interview with Rocker partly because “he’s so cute.” She called him an “athletic Adonis” in a March 2006 article, and within weeks they were dating.

Six months later, I interviewed Rocker and his now-serious girlfriend at a Lower East Side bar, in which he famously claimed, “I'm not Republican in everything — I mean, look at my girlfriend.” Alicia was smiling and playing along — she has a neuroscience degree from the University of Connecticut and referred to her parents as “the only black Republicans on earth” — and sent me an e-mail the next day to thank me for “being so nice to John.”

After I included the interview in my book, Alicia told me, “I feel famous!” I sincerely hope she liked the feeling, because she's certainly famous now. —Will Leitch

Holmes vs. Holmes: Will Robert Downey Jr. or Sacha Baron Cohen Make a Better Sherlock?

Photo-illustrations: Getty Images, istockphoto

It's the Battle of Baker Street! Robert Downey Jr. and Sacha Baron Cohen will face off as rival Sherlock Holmeses in upcoming films: Cohen is lined up for a Judd Apatow comedy, with Will Ferrell as Watson (More-Funny Sherlock Holmes); Downey is in discussions to appear in the Guy Ritchie comic-book adaptation (Less-Funny Sherlock Holmes).

So which Holmes will emerge victorious? We've taken a close look through the magnifying glass, and it's got to be Downey.

Downey is going to be the one in the deerstalker; Cohen is going to be the one in the tweed thong. Downey will surely explore Holmes's cocaine addiction; ten bucks says Cohen and Ferrell make out. Downey is probably the coolest movie star in America right now; Cohen is still duping the riffraff into behaving exactly the way everyone watched them behave in Borat. And while we'd ordinarily pick Judd Apatow over Guy Ritchie any day of the week, we have a hunch that Apatow might be getting a little complacent in his success, while at this point Ritchie must be good and mad, right?

Cohen and Apatow certainly might make a serviceable Holmes project, in which Holmes will sniff the butt of the dog that didn't bark, and maybe Verne Troyer will play Moriarty (the Napoleon of Crime, get it?), and maybe "elementary" will be the punch line to some joke about schoolgirls. But unless Downey manages to melt down before his project gets made (what are the odds?), we'll take our missing jewelry and mysteriously dead relatives to him, thank you very much. —Linda Holmes

Anne Hathaway Gets Her Chic Revenge

Poor Anne Hathaway. As if it weren't tough enough to promote Get Smart in the wake of dumping her skeevy jailed boyfriend, she had to grapple with last weekend's spate of splashy tabloid headlines about her love life: "The Princess and the Con-Man" on People's cover, and the touchingly subtle "BURNED BY A LOSER" from Us Weekly. If we'd had a month — or even a week — like that, we'd be on day eight of watching Ocean's Eleven while eating only ice cream and not brushing our hair. Instead, Anne has risen from the ashes looking like the proverbial $21 million bucks her ex needs to post bail. Take a look at her fashion from the past few weeks; we think you'll agree that Ms. Hathaway is the perfect poster child for how looking hot really is the best revenge.

The Revenge Haircut!Photo: Getty Images

Anne's come a long way from her days of looking like she walked out of a bad prom photo — these comfy-looking cocktail dresses are casual and flattering, youthful yet sophisticated. It proves there is middle ground between a full-on ball gown and wearing a tank top that hangs off your nipples while half an ass cheek falls out of your formal shorts. Now if only she would teach a seminar to Lindsay "Leggings" Lohan and the cast of The Hills.

The icing on the cake, though, is Anne's delicious Breakup Bob. Usually we warn people away from running to the hairdresser after a catastrophic event and screaming, "JUST CUT IT ALL OFF," because, well, look how well it worked for Britney. But we love the shorter length on Anne — especially the slightly tousled version up on the right. It says, "Why, hello there, Tragic Ex. Doesn't this look like sexy-time bed head? For ten bucks, I'll tell you if it is. OH WAIT. You're in hock to your lawyers until the end of time. What a SHAME."

Who's sorry now, Follieri?Photo: Getty Images

Anne’s dressier looks are likewise very smart. She must have been tempted to whip out the ol' cleavage — who doesn’t want to remind her ex that he no longer holds the key to Boobs Manor? — but went instead for classic, feminine, and refined. Conveniently, the whole Beautiful But Demure look is also an excellent way to reinforce the idea that she could not possibly have had any inkling what her asshat ex was (allegedly) doing. Does this look like a woman who would approve of lying about the Vatican? Certainly not!

Not that Anne looks prim (although she does seem like she might be a bit hungry, but that's another column). The Breakup Bob is as sexy curly as it is straight, which is the mark of a very good haircut indeed, and the black Rita Hayworth–esque gown accompanying it is super slinky without drifting into Slutsville. And while Anne’s white concoction could easily have turned into something a bit too virginal Disney Princess (it’s white! It’s frothy!), the construction is interesting enough to keep it adult.

So, congratulations, Anne. Not only for persevering in the face of a very embarrassing public breakup without bursting into tears on the red carpet, but for doing so without resorting to stumbling around in Cheetos-stained sweatpants and flip-flops, or even an endless series of interchangeable black dresses, à la Jennifer Aniston after that whole Brangelina thing. Maybe she really should teach a class. —The Fug Girls

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama Are Like ‘Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’

There's no question about who leads anymore.Photo: Getty Images

The lines were out the door for the Women for Obama fund-raising breakfast this morning at the New York Hilton and Towers. For the event, yes, but also for the ladies’ room. (One of the men’s rooms was, in fact, turned into a ladies’ room for the day.) The fairer sex made up most of the crowd of about 2,000, the latest gathering in which Obama and Clinton pulled it together for the team. Obama and Clinton, like any battle-worn pair, have their comedy shtick down pat. “I’m trying to exercise a little bit now, which I’m told does wonders for a person,” Clinton said in her remarks. “During the campaign, Barack would get up faithfully every morning and go to the gym. I would get up and get my hair done.” Cue laughing crowd. “It’s just one of those Ginger Rogers–Fred Astaire things,” she said, as if no one remembered that, only recently, they were a lot more like Liza Minnelli and David Gest. But forgetting their past strife was, of course, the point.

“Anyone who voted for me has so much in common with those who voted for Barack,” Hillary said. “And it is critical that we join forces because the Democratic Party is a family — sometimes a dysfunctional family — but it is a family.”

As for Obama, he pretty much seconded everything Hillary said and expanded on it — after, of course, lavishing praise. “As someone shouted in New Hampshire when we were there,” he said, “she rocks.”

So did the crowd buy it? “It looked like Clinton-Gore up there to me, but better," said Ali Muney. "They looked like a real pair. I’d like to see them running on the same ticket.” Muney, like most of the people there, has been an Obama supporter since the beginning. But a handful of Hillary fans also came out to warily show their support.

“I was with Clinton all the way, but now I’m with the Democratic candidate all the way," said Shirley Hurwitz, visiting from Lexington, Massachusetts. "Her support helped me make the switch.” Could she see an Obama-Clinton ticket? “Yeah…yeah,” she said hesitantly. “It seemed wacky a while ago, but now I think it could work.” —Kelly Marages

Kidrobot's New Jewelry Line Is Full of Angry Bunnies

So many colors!Photo: Courtesy of Kidrobot

Kidrobot just announced a jewelry collaboration with designer Tarina Tarantino. The goods will debut in Kidrobot and Tarina Tarantino's Soho stores on July 30 and range from $65 to $975. We couldn't think of a more fitting designer for Kidrobot to make jewelry with. Tarantino has designed a Barbie doll and Barbie-inspired jewelry and famously gave Hello Kitty pink hair in 2002 (an image she still uses in her jewelry designs), and she's earned a cult following with her bright, shiny creations. Not to mention she calls her L.A. headquarters "The Sparkle Factory."

Following up Kidrobot's recent colorful, toy-inspired handbag line, the new collection includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings, charms, rings, and wallet chains that all feature a Kidrobot character, plus Tarantino's signature Swarovski-crystal embellishments, Lucite beads, pearls, silk ribbons, and cast-metal pendants. We're eyeing the drop earrings with angry-looking bunnies smoking cigarettes and sticking out their tongues. Aww, cute and tough! See those and more after the jump. — Sharon Clott

Tim Russert As Guardian Angel: Is the Media Going Too Far?

Tim Russert

Photo: Getty Images

This morning on the Today show, Matt Lauer asked a health expert whether Tim Russert's death had caused a rush of middle-aged men to check out their heart health. The expert sort of hemmed and hawed, and then talked about how everyone should get checkups. It's no surprise Lauer would ask: The death of the Meet the Press host rocked his home network, NBC, and the political media across the country. And yesterday, ABC News producer Michael Bicks chronicled in the Times how he himself went to the hospital after having heart-attack symptoms because he had Tim Russert on his mind. It turned out that decision may have saved his life. "Because at the right moment I thought of Tim Russert, I am one of the lucky ones," he wrote. "It is a debt I can never repay."

Okay. We're happy for Bicks and all, but is this maybe getting a little out of hand? The blanket coverage of Russert's death and memorial service and the long television tribute montages that some critics thought were too much (Jack Shafer accused the media of canonizing him as a saint) — all that, we could understand. Russert's death was jarring: He was a rare figure in political journalism that everybody liked. But now it seems like we're moving on from sainthood and turning him into a miracle-working angel. It started with the rainbow over Washington during his memorial service. We know he was Catholic, a wonderful man, and friends with the Pope — but we don't see any altars set up to Russert. Yet.

A journalist like Michael Bicks would logically have Russert on his mind when he had mysterious pains. As would a Washington resident like the woman who had a similar experience, chronicled in the Washington Express. But let's be honest — hordes of men across the country rushing to the hospital to get checked out? That seems like a little bit of a stretch. Maybe if the president died. Or Brad Pitt or Donovan McNabb. We can't help but think some journalists are making way too much of this because they're having trouble letting go. For Tim's sake, isn't it time to just let his accomplishments speak for him? The ones from while he was alive, we mean.

Is Kanye West’s New Viral Campaign Too Viral for Its Own Good?

Photo: Joe DeLessio

We've already seen Kanye's spoof commercial for Be Kanye tablets, which, the ad claims, transform you into Kanye West if taken. (We can only assume this means they greatly improve your blogging skills while instilling a fascination with spaceships.) The ads are for Absolut Vodka, and even though the company’s name is only briefly mentioned at the end, it’s probably assumed that when bloggers link to the video, they’ll also mention the brand’s name. (Hey, it worked!)

But then we saw the above ad for Be Kanye tablets on the 1 train yesterday, which also only mentions Absolut’s name in passing (we didn’t even see it at first), and we got to thinking: Kanye West is a genius. He’s gotten a liquor company to pay for ads promoting not an album, or a tour, but simply how awesome he is. Most 1 train riders will never even know who’s behind the ads, since that would require either reading the ad's copy carefully and making a connection to what an “Absolut World” might mean or going to the advertised Website or calling the number — which, let’s be honest, your average straphanger won’t bother to do. (Especially because, thank God, cell phones still don't work in subway tunnels.) And unlike most viral ads, which pique your curiosity for what exactly is being advertised, you could safely assume this was just an ad for West. It would seem that this is a pretty bad strategy for Absolut, but then again, we just mentioned their name four times, so maybe it’s not so dumb after all. —Joe DeLessio

Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss Star in Topshop’s New Campaign

Jourdan Dunn and Karlie KlossPhoto: WireImage

A little news to whet your appetite for Topshop's imminent Soho arrival: Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss star in the brand's fall campaign. So expect to see pictures of them plastered on the walls of the new Soho store. "Topshop on the move" is the all-too-appropriate theme of the ads, which were shot on London buses and tube trains. "We wanted the campaign to have a very London vibe, sticking to Topshop's roots. And Topshop girls are movers and shakers — super-stylish, cool girls," Topshop creative director Ronnie Cooke-Newhouse told the Daily Mail. Perhaps that explains why Dunn sports Amy Winehouse's signature winged eyeliner. It looks ab fab on her, but we fear the look wouldn't do everyone so many favors.

Dunn and Kloss have already made pretty big names for themselves, and the Topshop spot will only bolster their fame. Past Topshop models Lily Donaldson, Lily Cole, and Caroline Trentini have gone on to star in campaigns for Gucci, Prada, and Oscar de la Renta, respectively.

Tracyreese

When Karl Lagerfeld sent models down the runway back in 1994 sporting berry-black nails, he forever altered nail polish's status in the fashion world. Chanel's Vamp became an instant classic, and a good manicure earned a spot on every designer's to-do list for a successful runway presentation. "I've always felt nails were such an important accessory for my runway shows and for the completion of my looks in general," Tracy Reese concurs. Hence the designer's decision to collaborate on a line of nail lacquers with beauty-industry monolith Sally Hansen, to debut in August. Inspired by actual fabric swatches from Reese's Fall collection, which includes shades of graphite, quartz, and teak, the ten new polishes offer a direct link to her clothing. It's essentially like buying ready-to-wear for $6 a pop, from a drug store near you. And no dressing-room drama.

chris benz's mykonos diary

Mykonos2

Arriving on the tarmac at Mykonos airport, you're instantly transported to another decade, when Jacqueline Onassis would wander the streets in bug-eyed sunglasses and a head scarf. I've been coming here every summer for the past five years, and I always stay at the Belvedere Hotel, a super-chic 30-room hotel located at the top of chora (Greek for "town").

Mykonos has loads of hidden beaches all around the rocky coastline, and the best daytime adventure is to rent ATV four-wheelers and race around the island in search of the next great beach. This summer, I love the Psarou Beach and Nammos Beach Club. It's a gorgeous full-service beach with tan waiters in white cargo shorts, a hopping restaurant, and even an outpost of the venerable Athens style outpost Luisa.

Come nightfall, my fellow guests and I organize large group dinners at the restaurants in town. These loud, family-style events can run for hours, with the venue eventually resembling more of a nightclub dance-off than a restaurant! By the end of the meal, the tradition is for everyone to do rounds of ouzo or masticha shots, eat watermelon, dance on tables, break plates, and twirl around with napkins.

hot town, summer in the city

City3

Unfortunates stuck in a hot metropolis this summer will appreciate London's Mumford Fine Art's effort to make cities seem cool. "The City," on view at Mumford's Soho Rooftop Gallery, includes three artists from three different urban centers who make a strong case for the beauty of a glittering, pulsating, even steaming cityscape. Robert M. Swedroe's "Cyber" collages use interior-decorating samples and architectural illustrations to show off the vibrant Pop potency of Miami. New Yorker Stephen Canino depicts the Big Apple's manic energy through exuberant abstraction. And Notting Hill-based photographer Emily Anderson's triptych "An Eye View of Trelick Tower (London)," which she shot from a ladder perched on the tower (which brought her to a height of 332 feet from the ground), first ran in Matchbox magazine, which declared that the work makes one "proud to be a Londoner."
