The film has got the likes of Mallika Sherawat pairing opposite the multi-talented Ranvir Shorie. And the one name that has to be applauded with golden hands is that of Sachin Khot, the man who after conquering the tellyland (testimonials include the record breaking 'Shanti' followed by many others), is all set to create the same magic in Bollywood too. With this super-exciting film, Sachin joins the gang of TV Directors turned Bollywood Directors. Bollywood Hungama caught up with this debutante director, to know what exactly happened during the making of Ugly Aur Pagli. Read on to find out ⦠How did the subject of Ugly Aur Pagli come up? The concept is an age old syndrome of opposites attracting each other; we just took a realistic take on the same. Today's 21st century girl is more aggressive and dominating in a relationship. In most of the love stories, we see males leading the relationship with lots of mushiness, but in this, I have tried some thing that's really different and interesting. In this story, the girl dominates the relationship and we have removed the mushiness out of the love story. Today's 21st century girl is more aggressive and dominating in a relationship You have directed television serials before. How was the transition from directing TV serials to directing a film? Yes, I have directed few TV serials in the past and it is a huge transition for me from TV to films. I directed TV serial called 'Shanti' starring Mandira Bedi in its third year in 1997. Besides that, I have also shot several other serials. During the nascent stage, when I was working on serials, it was more about story telling but now it has become more gimmicky. So this transition was great and important for me at the same time. How was it working with Ranvir, Mallika and others? Ranvir and Mallika are simply mind blowing. They are very professional and natural actors. As this is a female dominated love story with a dash of aggressiveness to it, Ranvir was supposed to get slapped by Mallika almost 99 times through the film. I think no actor in this film industry would have done this role, which Ranvir did. On the sets, Ranvir and Mallika used to sit down and device different techniques of slapping. I was stunned to see Ranvir sitting with Mallika and teaching her how to slap. It was really funny to hear their conversation when Ranvir told her methods in which a slap would look real etc. They both helped each other really well and their improvisations only helped the scenes get even better. Apart from them we have some interesting cameos done by interesting characters. Ranvir and Mallika used to sit down and device different techniques of slapping We have seen promos with lot of cameos? Well, Zeenat Amanji does the biggest cameo in the film, and I am really excited about that. I won't divulge much detail on this one but apart from her, there is a small but interesting cameo done by VJ Gaurav, VJ Vishal Malhotra and Manish Anand who play Ranvir's friends in the film. They all have small but very well etched roles introduced at crucial times. PNC's previous film Pyaar Ke Side Effects was a huge success, then how come you selected Ranvir Shorey and not Rahul Bose since the female lead remains the same? How did you think of this unusual pairing? Well, if you really see, then even Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat was an unusual pairing. It was Mr. Nandy's idea to get Ranvir; he was quite keen on casting him and moreover he just suited the bill. I think I couldn't have thought of any actor playing a lovable loser. And of course, this opposite pole chemistry always works. Does the film starts from where PKSE ended, since the story line is quite similar and the producers are also the same. Was this a conscious effort or just a mere co-incidence? No, there is no similarity between PKSE and Ugly Aur Pagli, there were no conscious efforts that were taken while penning down the story. The only similarity one will find between the two stories is of course Mallika and the fact that two drastically different people fall in love. In fact, in Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Rahul Bose was a kind of achiever, he had his own job, led his own life, but in Ugly Aur Pagli, Ranvir is a complete loser. Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Rahul Bose was a kind of achiever, he had his own job, led his own life, but in Ugly Aur Pagli, Ranvir is a complete loser Were you involved in the styling of the cast because the styling is quite different from what we have seen Mallika and Ranvir in their previous films? Yes. The styling has become a huge talking point of the film. Everyone is liking the look. I was involved in the styling of the cast; we had different styles in my mind which I worked upon but the credit goes to Rangita Nandy, the Producer of the film. Our idea was to basically give them a very casual look. We wanted the look to reflect the people on the road. We discussed with the ace designer Ashley Rebello and designed this wonderful look. How was the atmosphere on the sets? Any memorable incidents that you would like to share? The atmosphere on the sets was very friendly. But for me, it was a bit different. I was always a bit nervous and anxious on the sets since it was my first film. Due to the nervousness, I always used to keep bumping myself on something or the other on the sets. My entire cast used to pull my leg (especially Ranvir), but at the end of the day, it was total fun. Mallika is known to be a bit reserved, so how was she on the sets with everyone? How was her interaction on the sets? I don't know why people have tagged her as a very reserved person. I think she was pretty good on the sets, she gelled very well with everyone on the sets and above all, she is a thorough professional. What kind of rapport did Mallika and Ranvir share with each other since their chemistry looks great in the promos? I think they shared a brilliant rapport, they were too natural and trust me, the rapport and the chemistry which you see between both of them on screen is exactly how they were on the sets also! I remember while we were shooting, there was this scene where Ranvir was suppose to carry Mallika and walk across the road, while shooting for this scene, Mallika purposely used to distract him and do something or the other so that we would re-shoot and so that Ranvir had to carry her all the way again. It was really funny; we all pulled his leg and backed Mallika on this one. According to me, the chemistry between any two actors look good only when they understand each other and help each other in the scenes⦠and that was exactly the case here.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 11 Jul 2008 | 4:40 pm Akshay inspires 13 Hasinas to chant 'Gayatri Mantra'It's said that the most powerful word in the Universe is 'Om'. And seconding this is none other than Bollywood's very own Box-Office darling: Akshay 'Khiladi' Kumar. Akki is all set to prove that he is equally the darling of telly-land too, with his new show 'Fear Factor-Khatron Ke Khiladi' that will be aired on the soon to-be launched T.V. channel 'Colors'. Apparently, many aeons ago Kapoor had made some uncharitable remarks about Dutt's family, though now Kapoor completely denies. Stings of the past completely forgotten, Sanjay Dutt who according to his company's CEO Dharam Oberoi is booked to act until 2009, is adamant on mending all his bridges and washing away all the bitterness of the past. Putting aside whatever differences that might have existed between the two, Sanjay Dutt this week took time off to do an item song for Anil Kapoor's production Shortkut which is nearly complete. The song also featuring Anil Kapoor (making a guest appearance in his own film) and Amrita Rao was shot at breakneck speed by choreographer Bosco-Caesar. "Sanjay Dutt rushed back to Mumbai for two days from the Bahamas only to shoot the song for Anil's film. But the song couldn't be completed in time. He was to leave for South Africa to shoot for another film on Wednesday night. But he postponed his trip to South Africa by a day to complete Anil's song," informs the CEO of Sanjay Dutt Productions, Dharam Oberoi. What's more, Dutt refused to charge a penny for the item number, although the Kapoors insisted on paying. "Finally, Anil's wife Sunita Kapoor found a way out. Being a jewellery designer she presented Sanjay Dutt's wife with a diamond necklace, ear-rings and bangles from the Sunita Kapoor Collection," informs Dharam Oberoi. The Dutt-Kapoor-Rao item number was wrapped up on Thursday. And Dutt flew off for a long schedule in South Africa a day late.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 11 Jul 2008 | 4:23 pm Live Chat: Hard Kaur on July 12 at 1400 hrs ISTTake some of the most happening club numbers in recent times and the common factor that binds them together is that of singer Hard Kaur. While most critics were not too kind to Love Story 2050 in their reviews, Harry Baweja in one his interviews has said that he's glad that Harman has been accepted. However, going by this cartoon which appeared in a tabloid, it seems that the junta-janardhan isn't too happy with this sci-fi flick. This futuristic film, which deals with a time machine that takes the lead pair to the year 2050, seems to have not impressed the artist who made this cartoon. Hence, it comes as no surprise that it shows the audiences walking out of the film wishing they had a time machine which would have transported them 3 hrs back in time and saved their precious time and money from being wasted. While Shah Rukh Khan too continues to be written about every six months, a writer went on an overdrive and even attempted to make a legend out of Shilpa Shetty a few months back. However, it was about time that someone thought about exploring Shammi Kapoor's life too, that resulted in a book series called 'The Legends Of Indian Cinema'. Six titles arrive here on film personalities that include Sohrab Modi, Sivaji Ganesan, Guru Dutt, Mehboob Khan and P.C. Barua with Shammi Kapoor being one of them. Written by Deepa Gahlot with Aruna Vasudev being the Series Editor, 'Shammi Kapoor' is the first to be picked as he continues to live in the memories of one and all even till date. The write-ups are to the point and still explore Shammi Kapoor's journey from being a young man who had given more than a couple of dozens of flops in a row at the beginning of his career to a man who became a rebel star and never looked back after giving innumerous romantic breezy entertainers in a row. There is another important facet of his personality that hasn't been known to many people both inside and outside the industry, especially amongst the current generation. Believe it or not but 50 years before the concept of celebrity blogs was to become a phenomenon, Shammi Kapoor was a regular on that, though in the print media. Even way back in the 50s, he was an avid writer and shared his innermost thoughts with the readers of magazines like Filmfare. One look at his writing and you know that he is indeed one of the best read men that one may have come across in the industry. Read on: 'I am crazy and mixed up. I feel the urge for destruction exhaust me and drain out some of the bottled-up conflicts that tear me. The urge for self destruction is perhaps a manifestation of the urge for self-destruction.' 'Mine is a one man rebellion, trying to break the old and make the new. A rebel who wanted to find himself, his real self; not a reflection of the personalities of other people.' 'I have outgrown the legend which I helped create and do not wish to perpetuate it. Trying to climb the peak, I had to use a certain kind of strategy, but now, jumping from one peak to another, I have to adopt different tactics.' He also had women reserving some of the best compliments for him. One of them went to the extent of saying - 'I hate you, but you have two powerful appeals for women. To some you are an irresistible wolf, to others you are a stallion they would love to tame.' Deepa Gahlot also does well in providing insights about the personal aspect of Shammi Kapoor's life and details about his whirlwind romance with Geeta Bali, their deep love for each other and later Shammi getting shattered after Bali's untimely death. She talks about how Kapoor hit the bottle and indulged himself big time into womanizing before Neela Devi (not from the industry) came into his life and helped him stabilise after marrying him. There are also quite a few mentions about Shammi's love for women ever since his childhood and how he had demanded Nargis for a kiss! Rise and fall of Shammi Kapoor also makes for an interesting read because just like 99% of celebrities belonging to the film world, Shammi Kapoor too went through the grind before bagging his career-defining film Tumsa Nahin Dekha which was rejected by the likes of Dev Anand and Sunil Dutt. However, after quitting as a leading man while on the top (his Andaaz was one of his last films and a success), his career as a director was short-lived and quite disappointing. In fact, he minces no words on the mere mention of Rajesh Khanna with whom he self admittedly had a torrid time filming Bundalbaaz - a disaster! One factor that impresses most about the book 'Shammi Kapoor' is that it doesn't try to project him as a 'Mr. White'. Majority of books fall under this trap when they try exploring the life of a celebrity who has won hearts all over but this one treads a different path. It shows Shammi Kapoor's wild side, his insecurities, his womanizing virtues, his ambition to reach the top, his failure as a director - and all of this when the man is very much alive and kicking. Even better is to see the man himself contributing to quite a lot that is written in this book; something which makes it a far better effort than some of the desktop books that one continues to see in the name of biographies! So what is it that makes 'Shammi Kapoor' an interesting read for the audience? It's crisp chapters and avoidance from getting into unnecessary details which otherwise become boring after a point. The book lasts only around 100 pages and within that limited space, it tells its readers quite a lot about the legend who was one of the forerunners when it came to unabashed entertainment in the 60s. Jennifer Lynch, daughter of four time Oscar nominee and two times Cannes Film Festival winner, David Lynch, is all set to shoot Hindi language Bollywood film. Interestingly, her debut venture is about a subject that has always intrigued the West. The film is called Naagin--The Snake Woman and brings back to life the ancient myth concerning the Nag-Naagin relationship. Lynch's last film Surveillance starring Bill Pullman and Julia Ormand was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May this year. And it is none other than Bollywood siren Mallika Sherawat who has been zeroed in on the title role of a Naagin. Mallika will be the fourth actress to play the legendary of a Naagin. Vyjayantimala, Reena Roy, Sridevi and Manisha Koirala are the famous Bollywood actresses who had enacted this legendary character previously. The film also stars Irrfan Khan in a role of a cop who has been given the task to pin down the Naagin and destroy her legendary powers. Hollywood's special effects wizard Robert Kurtzman has been roped in to create some unbelievable graphics for the film. Kurtzman, who has worked with the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriquez, has been a writer himself. The film From Dusk Till Dawn has been written by him. Produced by Ratan Jain's Venus Records and Tapes, Naagin-The Snake Woman has Vikram Singh and Govind Menon as its co-producers. Ace Director of Photography, Madhu Ambat and Hollywood Sound Effects specialist Patrick Girardi are also a part of the project. The shooting starts in various locations and sets, in the last week of July, in a start to finish schedule. Casting is currently on for the rest of the parts in the film. Producer Ratan Jain is very upbeat about the development. Says he, "Venus films is known for its commercial family entertainers. There is lot of work happening between Hollywood and Bollywood and the film with Jennifer lynch starring Mallika Sherawat is a step towards it. It was a wonderful experience working with Mallika Sherawat in Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam. And hence it was natural that we take it further. She is a thorough professional. Shamir, who has composed music for films such as Page 3, Corporate and Traffic Signal in the past is apparently very impressed with Chi Chi's music talent and his interest in melody and lyrics. What's more, Shamir is very hopeful about the song which is in fact dedicated to the Almighty. Both Govinda and Shamir are pretty confident that this song will have a mass appeal as its lyrics include the famous saying-'Jakhon raakhe saaiyaan maar saake na koi'. The video of the song is going to be shot very soon. Hope this number proves to be yet another chartbuster like some of Govinda's attempts at singing.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 10 Jul 2008 | 3:25 pm A much thinner Paresh Rawal in Shivam Nair's MaharathiOut of the many production houses which has made their foray into Bollywood in the last few years, a prominent name is that of Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.
