Chief Minister of Delhi praises director Rajkumar Gupta's Aamir

Debutante director Rajkumar Gupta's film Aamir has been appreciated by one and all. In this day and age when many big films have failed to create any magic at the B.O, the success of Aamir has surely taken everyone by surprise. Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi Ms. Sheila Dikshit had the opportunity to see Aamir last week and she came out mighty impressed. What's more, she even congratulated actor Rajeev Khandelwal on his work. In fact Rajeev, who was in the capital along with his director Rajkumar Gupta for the launch of the DVD of Aamir got a chance to spend some time with the CM herself. Bollywood Hungama spoke to director Rajkumar Gupta who seemed all excited sharing his experience with us. "I am really overwhelmed that Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi, Ms. Sheila Dikshit loved my film. She saw the film last week and we got an opportunity to meet her last Sunday when we were in Delhi for the DVD launch. She said that she has never seen Bombay shot so beautifully and even discussed the intricate details of some scenes with us. She even remembered some dialogues from the film," says the debutante director. After the kind of overwhelming response that Aamir has got, what's next on Rajkumar's agenda? "I am working on my second film which is also with UTV Spotboy. We are discussing a couple of ideas but I have still to start writing it," signs off Rajkumar Gupta.

The Complan Boy and the Complan Girl

Small kids have always been a favorite with advertisers since time immemorial. After all, your heart immediately melts when you see a small child talking about his / her favorite product. Two such kids (one a small good-looking boy and the other a cute little girl) were seen many years ago in one of the most popular commercials for a popular health and energy drink - Complan. While the boy proudly exclaimed “I am a Complan Boy” even the girl was not one to be left behind and said “I am a Complan girl”. The ad is still etched in our memories but what's interesting is that today that very good-looking boy and cute girl are among the teen heartthrobs of the nation. Yes we are indeed talking about the super cool Shahid Kapoor and the glamorous Ayesha Takia. Years after they did the Complan commercial together, Shahid and Ayesha have managed to make a mark for themselves in the big, bad world of Bollywood. What's more, the duo was even romantically paired opposite each other in films like Dil Maange More and Fool-N-Final. They would also be seen in Ahmed Khan's forthcoming film Paathshala. And just in case you are wondering what happened to the Complan, well one look at Shahid and Ayesha's respective debut films (Ishq Vishk and Socha Na Tha) and you'll surely agree that it was only Ayesha on whom the Complan actually worked.

"I've shared 80 days with Vidya on shoot" - Shahid Kapoor

So what if his Kismat did not do well on the personal front. Professionally, Shahid Kapur is having a ball of a time. With his biggest release and his highest grosser Jab We Met behind him, this energetic actor is giving all he can in his next venture titled Kismat Konnection to portray what he calls is his best role till date. All the way from London, Bollywood Hungama's Devansh Patel has a detailed chat with the shy guy who is difficult to catch hold of when it comes to giving interviews. And look at our kismat, we not only got hold of him but also managed to ask him a question which he would have avoided. But we did, and it was about his Kismat, his Konnection with Vidya and wait...Kareena! Well, after a long one-week wait, I've finally managed to get hold of you. Shall I say it's my Kismat? (Laughs) Of course, yes. It is your Kismat and mine too for talking to you in London. You did change your Kismat with Jab We Met. What's going to change with Kismat Konnection? To begin with, it's a new film, it's a different film and a very new character for me. I think in Jab We Met, my character was very quiet and introvert kinds. Here it is loud, vociferous, and talkative. So I'm hoping that it'll be a change for the audiences to see me doing something different here. Apart from that, my Kismat is in the hands of my fans. If they love the film and my role, I have no complaints. If they don't, I still have no complaints. I think in Jab We Met, my character was very quiet and introvert kinds. Here it is loud, vociferous, and talkative. It's Aziz Mirza coming back after a long time, its Vidya Balan with you for the first time and above all, Sanjay Chhel who is the scriptwriter of Kismat Konnection. How did the Konnection workout with all of them? Well. Aziz uncle hasn't made a film since five years. And then he came across a story which he really liked and wanted to make a film with it and contacted me. This is the first time that Aziz uncle is working with someone besides Shahrukh. So, it's a huge compliment. I really liked the subject because it was very different from what I've done in the past. Then he told me that he wanted to cast Vidya. The cast was decided and we started shooting soon. Sanjay Chhel as we all know is a brilliant scriptwriter and his screenplay has always done well. So I hope this film changes a lot of Kismats. Were you surprised when you first heard that Vidya Balan was going to be paired opposite you? Not really. As I said that when I met Aziz uncle, he had already told me that he wanted to cast Vidya. He thought that Vidya was just the right actor for the part, and I had full faith in him. Yes, it's Vidya and my first film together so I hope the chemistry works. I think it has worked out really well and we both are looking very nice on screen together. She's a great girl and we had fun working together. A lot of people had certain reservations because people had seen me in boyish roles and Vidya in serious roles. But right now, people are reacting very well to the promos and so I guess it's all good. It is Vidya and my first film together so I hope the chemistry works Now that we have seen your solo release JWM do really well. Will Kismat Konnection finally establish you as an actor who can carry a film on his own shoulder? I don't know whether Kismat Konnection will establish that or not. But it's not only Jab We Met which has established me as a solo actor. I've also been a part of two other solo films - Ishq Vishq and Vivah. They both did really well for me. Eventually it's about doing good films and a director coming up to me with a role which I'd like to do regardless whether or not it has another lead actor or not. But I am proud of the fact that few of my solo hero films have done well and it's a good and happy feeling for me. Hoping that Kismat Konnection will also follow on the same track. Click above for more stills Tell us something about your new long hairstyle. Who recommended it to you? Or was it your own decision? I am trying to do something new in every film. I don't want to sport the same look in every film and I've just started a new film with Vishal Bhardwaj for which I needed a different look. So the long hair style is for that. But I guess after a couple of my new releases, I'll do something drastically different by cutting my hair really short. I'm tired of the long hair already. Aziz Mirza has always given hit numbers in all his films. We know he loves his music. What strikes a chord here? I mean, we've never seen such groovy tracks in an Aziz Mirza film before? Aziz uncle was and is very clear about the fact that Kismat Konnection is a very young film and wanted me to dance in the film. He knew that the USP of KK lies with it's connect with the youth. So we roped in Pritam who is going through the best phase of his career right now. That's one of the reasons why the music is very upbeat and also because he is making a film about a character settled in Toronto. So the music should be made keeping in mind the location and should sound like that. Keeping all those things in mind, I think Kismat Konnection's music is going to rock. Aziz uncle knew that the USP of KK lies with it's connect with the youth. So we roped in Pritam who is going through the best phase of his career right now. You're also working with directors who are debutants for you. Vishal Bhardwaj and your own father Mr. Pankaj Kapur. But keeping in mind the genre which both these celebrities are fond of, are these two films going to be very contemporary, rural or dark? And will it show a new Shahid? Absolutely, I am really excited about both these films but it's a bit premature to talk about them right now. I've just started shooting for Vishal's film and dad's film is being scripted as of now. But yes, both the films will showcase a new Shahid and a different side to me which the audiences will be surprised to see. Your father has worked with Vishal Bhardwaj in the film Blue Umbrella, which won a few awards in prestigious film festivals. Any tips or advice you got from your father since you were a part of Vishal's film. Dad wants me to discover myself as a person and as an actor. He gives me a lot of space. Yeah, both have done great work together in the Blue Umbrella and there have been conversations, which have happened where I've asked him, and he said that he was really happy that I was working with Vishal. I am my own person and I will take as much advice I want to from my dad. But at the same time he is also somebody who wants me to find my own way and to understand what works good for myself. I'll have no issues about working with Kareena because at the end of the day we are professionals. Which is your favourite track from Kismat Konnection? I really like the song 'Bakhuda Tumhi Ho' sung by Atif. In films, you've held too many beautiful ladies in your arms. When are we going to see you hold a gun? (Laughs) Very soon man! Very soon. Your biggest success has been with Kareena Kapoor. Professionally, are we going to see both of you together sometime? It's not really up to me. It depends on my director who approaches me with such a script and if he thinks that Kareena is right for the part opposite me, I'll have no issues about working with her because at the end of the day we are professionals. If my director thinks that Kareena will be a part of the film then I will support my director all the way. What's cooking between you and Vidya off the sets? You had to ask this, didn't you? What can I say? She is a good co-actor and a great person with whom I've shared some fantastic 80 days of shoot for the film. Everything else you want to hear can be found in the gossip mills. Do I have to be linked with all my female actors just because we get along very well on and off the sets? (Laughs) Has Imtiaz approached you with a fresh script? Let's see. Imtiaz is one of the best talents that we have in our industry right now. He has just started out. We've had great fun working on Jab We Met and if he feels that something comes along which he thinks is right for me, he'll come to me and I'm always looking forward to work with him. You've said earlier that you've done enough boyish roles. But the promos of Kismat Konnection aren't very different from what you've mentioned earlier. To say that I won't be doing any boyish roles is not what I have in mind because people have really liked me in a certain space. So I'm not going to lose that. I am 27 years old, I connect with the youngsters, connect with the youth, I am going to do young roles which I feel are my USP. I will never let that go and at the same time, I'd like to discover new areas and try something different as well. It's going to be a healthy balance of both. Do I have to be linked with all my female actors just because we get along very well on and off the sets? Tell us a bit about your Toronto experience while filming for Kismat Konnection. I loved it. It's a beautiful city. We spent nearly 60 days there and were really lucky to go there in the summer because it's terribly cold in the winters. We shot downtown which reminds you of Manhattan, New York. There are lot of Indians there and time felt pretty much at home because if you wanted an Indian meal, you'd just drive down ten minutes to a restaurant and you'd find nice tasty Indian food. Did the first time with Vidya make her or you forget your lines, steps taken wrong, etc? (Laughs) The first day we were shooting, Vidya came up to me because she wanted to break the ice. So she took the paper and pen out and asked me for my autograph and the whole unit started laughing. There was a good atmosphere on the sets generally. Everyone was chilled. Aziz uncle is someone who likes the work to happen not very seriously and likes to have fun on the sets. That's what reflects in his films and that's why his films are so light hearted and easy to watch. Vidya is a very good actor and it is always good to work with somebody who is talented. The first day we were shooting, Vidya came up to me because she wanted to break the ice. So she took the paper and pen out and asked me for my autograph and the whole unit started laughing. Besides giving interviews, have you guys planned any other ways to promote this film? Any merchandising, etc? Yeah, we will do everything in our capacity to promote the film. I don't think that this film requires merchandising and there are certain subjects which do not justify merchandising. But we will be going out on television shows and do press conferences to make as many people aware about the film as we can because we are all happy with the way the film has turned out. We will be giving our best shot. Any message for your fans who want you to shoot a film here in London. I'd love to come to London and shoot my film. I love the city, the weather, and the people. It is one of my favourite cities in the world. If given a choice to spend my holiday in a city, it will definitely have to be London. I hope something comes along the way so we can come to London and shoot. I want to give all my love to my fans and thank them because Jab We Met really did well in U.K and would like to thank each and every one who went and saw the film. Kismat Konnection is the first film I'm doing which is a NRI film. I hope that all the people living abroad will connect to my character, and you know, in Hindi films NRIs are always shown as rich, affluent people. I think there is a huge section of NRIs who are just like regular people, trying to make ends meet, who work hard and live a normal life. That's Raj Malhotra for you in Kismat Konnection. Indians abroad have that kind of life and find a place for themselves with hard work and dedication. I hope my audience will accept me in this new role. Describe Kismat Konnection in one sentence. If I had three hours to kill, I'd go and watch this breezy, feel good, young, fun and worth-your-time film.

"I found my way in this industry because of Farhan" - Arjun Mathur

Farhan Akhtar has found a new blue-eyed boy. Arjun Mathur who played Irrfan Khan's gay lover in Mira Nair's short film, Migration written by Zoya Akhtar and then again Shabana Azmi and Boman Irani's son in Farhan Akhtar's short-film Positive, is now getting ready to play an important part in Zoya Akhtar's directorial debut Luck By Chance. "It's a very interesting though small part of a theatre and television actor named Abhimanyu. Farhan has been very supportive. I wouldn't have found my way around this industry without him." But before that, the Delhi dude plays a boorish but benign Bihari waiter in new-director, Rajan Menon's Barah Aana. "I play a waiter. Vijay Raaz plays the watchman, and Naseeruddin Shah a driver from North India. We play three friends and migrants in Mumbai who stay in the Dharavi slums," reveals Arjun. The film, which also features the Brick Lane actress, Tannishtha Chatterjee, acquires an added significance in the light of the recent anti-migrant agitations in Maharashtra. "The film was called Bhaiyya to begin with. But the rights to that title were with a Bhojpuri producer," says Arjun. And last but not the least, Arjun who's a trained actor from Barry John's institute as well as the Lee Strasburg Theatre & Film Institute In New York, has just completed another socially-relevant film. "The short-film format doesn't seem to leave me," grins Arjun. "After doing the two AIDS films with Farhan and Mira I've just completed another short-film for a 10-film omnibus on Mumbai called Mumbai Cutting. My film, the last of the 10, is directed by Ayush Raina. People like Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Kashyap, and Rituparno Sengupta directed the others. It was premiered recently at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles."

Guess the big war between two scions of Bollywood`s erstwhile - Khans and Bawejas is finally over. Newcomer Harman Baweja`s film `Love Story 2050`, which was pitted against Imran Khan starrer `Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na`, received a lot of flak from the critics and since then, despite appreciation Harman has been at the receiving end. All bugged with the media-sown rivalry, Harman decided to sort out the uncalled-for rivalry with Imran`s mentor and uncle Aamir.

Why Udit Narayan is singing much less in Hindi films?

Music has become flashier and more flippant, but Udit Narayan has evolved for the better with success. It's been twenty years since his anthem Papa kehte hain rocked the nation, but Udit, as his songs in Partner, Om Shanti Om, Tashan and others prove, is still current coin He's chilled-out as always and sports a rather trendy-looking crop. He laughs when I ask him whether he is trying to be "with-it". "Does it seem like that? But no, I am not being fashionable." He adds more soberly, "My father passed away recently and I did my mundan. My hair is just growing back. I am quite traditional in that way. We were committed to our 18-city Udit Narayan & Aditya Narayan Live In Concert tours and I did all the shows with a shaved head and no cap either." For those who came in late, Udit Narayan, trained in classical vocal at Mumbai's Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on a scholarship, made his debut under Rajesh Roshan in Unnees Bees in 1980 and shot to center-stage with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, and Dil, Beta, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Mohra and others followed. After gradually overtaking Kumar Sanu by the mid-'90s he reigned for a decade through major hits like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Rangeela, Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..., Gadar - Ek Prem Katha, Koi...Mil Gaya, Tere Naam, Aitraaz, Veer-Zaara and other films. Of late, Udit Narayan has been singing much less in Hindi films, but he is unaffected by the 'drop' in work. "Almost every song that I have sung has worked, whether it is Vivah, Don, Jaan-E-Mann and Krrish in 2006, Partner and Om Shanti Om in 2007 or Tashan, Haal-e-dil and Mere Baap Pehle Aap this year. I have had good songs in Black-And-White, Shaurya and Pranali but the films failed and the songs went unnoticed. I have now sung four songs in Mehbooba, which has extraordinary music by Ismail Darbar and is the last film of Anand Bakshisaab." But the Power above has balanced things out. "I am singing in 90 per cent of Kannada films being made. I have been singing a lot in Bhojpuri, Telugu and Tamil - and my score now is 30 languages!" smiles Udit. "I have sung the biggest Tamil song of 2007 - Sahara saaral tuvudo from Sivaji for Rajinikanth. Rahmansaab has also used South Indian voices from Shankar Mahadevan to Hariharanji but it's God's grace that my song topped the film's score and the year's charts!" Thanking Providence, destiny, his fans and the industry is a force of habit for Udit Narayan. "At heart I like simplicity," laughs Udit when we point out this trait. "I come from a family of farmers. My father refused to leave his roots and come and live with me even when I made it big - he continued being a farmer till the very end. Main zameen pe rehna chahta hoon - music too starts with the fragrance of this Earth and branches out." He goes on, "It is a proven fact that those who have had very long struggles have lasted the longest in our industry! I have worked on a salary of a hundred rupees a month. As a singer, I recall walking 15 kilometres from Borivali (a distant Northern suburb of Mumbai) to Juhu in pouring rain to stand outside the late Laxmikantji's bungalow hoping that I would get an entry and an audience. In hindsight I consider that I was lucky to have struggled so much because from when the good times began in the late '80s till today, those memories are a 24-hour ehsaas that I can never forget. And so you learn to value success and hard work and remain grounded." Udit recalls his all-time idol Mohammed Rafi as well as Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and all the other giants who sustained for decades only because struggle had honed their art, craft and temperaments. So does he feel that his son Aditya's success at such an early age is healthy? The singer replies instantly, "Aditya is an achiever. Today he has proved himself as an anchor on Zee TV. He has been a good student throughout school, he learnt Western music in London by living there alone for 2 years - he even managed the admissions on his own through the 'Net and learnt to cook while living there! - and is also groomed in Indian classical music, starting with the late Kalyanjibhai. He wants to sing too, but more than that he also wants to be an actor. But first he will complete his education as he is in his Final Year in Commerce." He adds, "And it is not true that life for Aditya has been a cakewalk because he is my son. When my wife Deipa was pregnant, I was still struggling. Our elders say that marriage or a child can transform your luck and sometimes that's really true. Right from his birth, Aditya was miraculously lucky for me. Qayamat... was released and Papa kehte hain bada naam karega became a smash-hit. Was this a coincidence? Were Majroohsaab's words a coincidence? Who can say? "I remember my anxiety in those days. We stayed in a 300- square feet flat. 'I have no house and no career. What will happen when my son is born?' I asked my wife, who has always been a solid support system. And do you know that for six months after Papa kehte hain I did not record a single song?" But things began changing soon, he recalls. "Kya karte the saajana was my next hit - again for Anand-Milind in the film Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka," says the singer. "It was to be recorded by Mohammed Aziz, then the top singer. But he was delayed at a Laxmikant-Pyarelal recording for a big film and Gulshan Kumar finally asked Anand-Milind to call 'the boy who had sung Papa kehte hain'. I did not even have a landline then and they called up at a shop below my flat. And I rushed to the recording jis tarah ek pyaasa kue ki taraf jaata hai," laughs Udit. Obviously, he can afford the luxury of laughing at the incident now. But he is back in reflective mood as he adds, "I had little money for Aditya's school admission at the nearby St.Xavier's School, but the principal told us not to worry. Aditya walked to school and back daily with a servant who came to do housework. For the first seven years of his life he slept on a sofa in our cubby hole-sized flat. One day I told him, 'Your father is struggling and so are you. If we both reach somewhere, you should never forget these days.' And he understood what I said even at such a young age. When he got the offer to host Sa Re Ga Ma Pa from Zee TV, I left the decision to him." Why does he think his work in Hindi films has reduced? Wasn't a part of the reason the fact that he was not fluent in English phrases that have become endemic within Hindi film songs? And Udit laughs and replies, "Maybe! There was a time when I was singing 7 of 10 male songs. Now that kind of raj (reign) had to stop somewhere and I was mentally prepared for it. Do I look or behave like someone frustrated? I honestly think that after the good period I have seen this kind of decrease in work is healthy for my mental balance. I am or was never into negativity like why is X getting to sing so many songs when I am getting less. My whole effort is that I should sing as well or if possible better than before. But yes, I am definitely happy that the love of my fans, well-wishers and the industry has ensured that I am better off than all my contemporaries. If I am still thought about for Falak tak chal saath mere, a deep melody, and a Western-meets-folk song like Dil dance maare re in the same film Tashan, I feel truly blessed." Screen India

Ealing road trader in court

On Tuesday, 1st July, a local video and music retail business and its Director were ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £ 5,614 to the London Boroughs of Brent & Harrow Trading Standards Service for supplying counterfeit and unclassified DVDs. Musik Zone (Wembley) Ltd., based at 105a Ealing Road, Wembley and its Director Mohammed Nadeem (aged 37), pleaded guilty to a total of fourteen offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and the Video Recordings Act 1984. The Court heard that the case arose after Brent & Harrow Trading Standards Service received a complaint from a member of the public who had purchased a number of CDs and DVDs from the defendant's premises which were later found to be counterfeit. Undercover Trading Standards Officers visited the shop during October 2007 and purchased several DVDs which, upon examination by the film companies, were also confirmed as being counterfeit. The Court heard that on 12th November 2007, Brent & Harrow Trading Standards joined forces with the Alperton Safer Neighbourhood Police team to search Nadeem's shop for illegal goods. A quantity of fake DVDs were seized because they breached the trade marks of Eros International Ltd. and Yash Raj Films. After the seizure, the DVDs were also examined by the British Board of Film Classification, who confirmed that they were unclassified as required by the Video Recordings Act 1984. The Magistrates were told that during an interview with Trading Standards Officers, Nadeem stated that the seized DVDs were his own personal possessions and that he had purchased them from Wembley Market. He also stated that some of the seized DVDs belonged to his friends who had left them in his shop.

Scarcity of cinemas hit new films

Click above for more stills The flow of multiple releases week after week is playing havoc. Sometime back, this writer had mentioned categorically that the day is not far when release dates will go haywire due to lack of theatres. And that's what is happening. This Friday, as many as three new Hindi films were confirmed -- MEHBOOBA, MUKHBIR and GOODLUCK. In fact, the producers of MEHBOOBA and GOODLUCK have gone all out to promote their films. With JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA faring exceptionally well and some plexes increasing its shows from next week onwards, it has resulted in the new releases not getting the theatres. Resultantly, the makers of GOODLUCK have decided to shift its release to 1st August. That makes it MEHBOOBA and MUKHBIIR this Friday [July 11], besides two major Hollywood openers, HANCOCK and KUNG FU PANDA. In the future too, the release dates of a number of films are expected to go topsy-turvy for this reason.
