Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah play Imran's parents in JTYJN

You are always comfortable to act with people you know. No wonder why, Imran found it easy to act in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. His best friend's (Imaad) parents Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak play his on screen parents. For the first time in their career, Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah are coming together as husband and wife in the film, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. Last time we saw them together was in the film, Mirch Masala in 1987 but they were not paired opposite each other. Ratna Pathak Shah's role has been actually modeled on Nuzhat Khan, Imran's real life mother. The relationship that mother son share is more like friends like in his real life. Interestingly, Imaad and Imran have grown up together sharing birthday cakes and clothes and now they share their parents. Imaad too had recently made his debut in his father's directorial debut film, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota. Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah readily agreed to play Imran's parents in his debut film and extended their real life relationship to reel life especially for him.

Shenaz Treasurywala on the cover of Time Out

She is one woman who is indeed God's gift to mankind. Having done her stint of fame with modeling and VJing, acting was but obvious the next step for this chic. You have got a glimpse of this babe in her debut film Ishq Vishk opposite the Gen Next heart throb Shahid Kapoor. She was indeed the Barbie doll of Ishq Vishk, whom many would be wanting to take home to their mothers. She is indeed Shenaz Treasurywala, who is full of treasure, quite literally! And the news is that she is back and how! Shenaz is not just hosting the Great Indian Laughter Challenge, but also is the cover-girl of the latest issue of 'Time Out', the magazine that spells out to be a total sell-out, merely due to her cover-presence itself! She will also be electrifying the silver screen with her dew-drop smile, something that the viewers were being deprived of since Ishq Vishk.

Subhash K Jha speaks about Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (TPTM) is not a great work of art. It doesn't cause ripples of revolution across the cinematic stratosphere. It does something even better. It makes you feel warm and comforted about the quality of contemporary life. No matter how awful things seem, there is always that core of goodness in the human heart to count on. This one makes you count your blessings. Kunal Kohli taps that noble core, so elusive in our cinema. The last film, which was as nobly intended as TPTM, was Ashutosh Gowarikar's Swades. And Gowarikar for all his acute sensitivity and storytelling acumen was awfully out of breath dealing with the child actor in Swades. Kohli is delightly at-ease with his four child actors who have been selected not for their overt cuteness but their propensity to play the characters that they're allotted with restrain and understanding. Each of the four brats, forced by law to come and live with the man who accidentally killed their parents, sparkle with a spontaneous credibility. Kohli treats the kids as young adults. And he treats the audience with as much respect. He gives us what we apparently want (emotions, laughter, drama). But he makes sure his plot doesn't become a slave to conventional prescriptions. It's not easy to desist from using a patronizing tone for the children when they are orphans trapped in an adult situation that they don't understand. Kohli does a fantasy-spin where the sassy and spiffy words and storytelling offset the quaint Arcadian story of the four orphans and a cantankerous tycoon who we soon discover is constantly unhappy on account of a girlfriend who only talks about designer clothes and Sunita Menon. For enlightened conversation he must turn to a poker- faced butler (Razzak Khan), a business associate on the webcam(who talks in an indeterminate accent) and later the four children who are forced on his life along with a god-sent angel who infuriates him by constantly laughing in his face. More than Mary Poppins, Kunal Kohli is inspired by the Sound Of Music…and I don't mean what Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have created on the soundtrack. Saif's ceaseless scowl could well be a spillover from what Christopher Plummer wore as a passion statement way back in the 1960's in the Roger & Hammerstein musical. And Rani Mukherjee could be a desi Julie Andrews popping out of a cottony heaven run by a 'God' who looks a lot like Rishi Kapoor. The idyllic theme often takes off into a realm of commodious fantasy with children prancing with animals, both real and computerized, in what could happily be seen as a modern-day interpretation of Gulzar's Parichay. TPTM leaves you with a feeling of warmth and wellbeing. TPTM is an all's-well-with-the-world anthem on celluloid sung at a pitch that pointedly avoids the higher notes and scales some sweet tender octaves in tones that sound like panes to heaven. More than anything else TPTM bowls you over its nobility of purpose. Though inured in the condensed milk of human kindness the narration never plummets into becoming an occasion to flaunt some jaundiced utopia. Not even when Kunal, very bravely inspired by Raj Kumar Hirani brings footage of the real-life Gandhiji into the narration. That's when our heaven sent 'Munnibai' goes for the kill. Rani Mukherjee creates an aura of mischievous artlessness around the angel's role. Saif is all scowls and pursed lips. Nonetheless emotive in parts. Amisha Patel's benign bimbo's act depends more on styling than substance. Sudeep Chatterjee's camerawork is gloriously wedded to gloss. Every hair on the head glistens with glamour. Every scowl is on the prowl for perfection. No one can hate this film. It doesn't have a single 'bad' character, not even badly-written characters. In just two sequences Sharat Saxena as the legal eagle lets you know all we need or want to know about his life. The children tell us the rest.

Bollywood musicians' prices hit the roof

It looks like the notorious slump in the music industry is over. Suddenly star prices have skyrocketed propelling the music industry to follow suit. "It's all because of Akshay Kumar," says Pritam Chakraborty with a straight face. "When he started charging unheard-of prices (apparently in the vicinity of Rs 30 crores) the entire economics of an average film project altered drastically. Today my musicians, arrangers and programmers are asking for a steep hike in their remuneration. I've no choice but to hike my fee accordingly." Though Pritam doesn't mention a specific amount, his fee has apparently gone up from approximately 7-8 lakhs per score to around 12-15 lakhs. All the other composers including the successful Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Vishal Shekhar charge in the same vicinity. However, after the release of the soundtrack of Anees Bazmee's Akshay Kumar starrer Singh Is Kinng which has been sold at a staggering price of Rs 13.5 crores, Pritam Chakbraborty who has scored music for the album is expected to hike his fee by many notches. Says the long-haired globally-geared composer, "Singh Is Kinng redefines the parameters of film music sales. This kind of price for a movie soundtrack was unheard-of after people stopped buying music off the shelves as much as they used to, thanks to computer and television outlets." However, Pritam has walked away with very little of the Singh Is Kinng loot. "We musicians remain underpaid especially lately when the music industry was undergoing a slump. For me the turning point was the soundtrack of Jab We Met which gave me a chance to be unusually creative and then Race which had peppy item songs." A.R.Rahman is a price apart. Apparently, his fee per score used to be around 1.5 crore rupees which considering the all-round escalation in movie budgets has gone up to Rs. 2.5 crores. Last year's flamboyant flavour Himesh Reshammiya has stopped doing music for films that do not feature him in the cast. So he cannot be counted among the musicians in the race. But composer Aadesh Shrivastav feels the bubble is an illusion. "And it's bound to burst. Who are these people who are suddenly paying in multi-crores for music rights when everyone knows music doesn't sell these days? Very frankly, I look at the Rs. 13.5 crore claim for the Singh Is Kinng soundtrack with great skepticism. Whom are they giving that kind of money to? The film's leading man Akshay Kumar or the music composer Pritam? Have they given Pritam even a fraction of the money they've got for the music rights?" Aadesh feels film music is going through an era of unhealthy competition. "I remember when Laxmikant-Pyarelal had composed the Qawwalli 'Parda Hai Parda' for Amar Akbar Anthony, R.D. Burman was so thrilled, he immediately congratulated Laxmi-Pyare and was inspired to compose a Qawwalli 'Hai Agar Dushman' in Hum Kissi Se Kam Nahin. Today the competition is so unhealthy. If two plagriarized songs click in a movie, another music director will offer to rip off four songs for the same producer and make them chartbusters. Today when a listener hears a song he likes his first reaction is, 'Where is it stolen from?' It's very difficult to remain original like I am, when everyone is busy copying. That's why I'm doing so much non-film work. Very honestly I see no future in Hindi film music."

"Fashion would be unveiled on 18th July" - Madhur Bhandarkar

In exactly 3 weeks from now, the world would know about how 3 National Award winning director Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion would look like. Come 18th July and the film's first look would be unveiled along with the screening of Kismat Konnection. Though it would only be a teaser, it would mark the launch of the film's first ever official peep in. Says Bhandarkar whose Fashion yet again promises to be a film that would present realism in an entertaining manner, "The film is getting closer to the finishing line and over the next few months, we would see Fashion getting more and more visible. Along with Kismat Konnection, audience would now also get a chance to get a peek at Fashion." Though the teaser would last for only one minute and would come sans any dialogues, it would introduce all the important characters of the film which includes Priyanka Chopra along with Kangna Ranaut, Mugdha Godse and Arjan Bajwa. Says a source attached to the film, "The first look itself has turned out to be mind blowing. As has been the case with Bhandarkar sir's films from the past, Fashion too has a shock value attached to it and would catch the viewer unaware. The one minute teaser has been cut quite well and would act as a good enough kick start for the film to start creating a buzz from the word Go! The film is looking great and this is certainly going to be Bhandarkar sir's biggest project till date." On questioned about the film being indeed so huge, Madhur only goes on to say, "I have always maintained that Fashion has gone deep into the underbelly of what happens in the word of glitz and glamour. My films have always showed a mirror to the society and Fashion is no different. Just wait and watch for the film's teaser on the big screen. This is just going to be the beginning of many more things to come." Looking at a November release, Fashion would be one of the many releases of Priyanka Chopra this year which include Love Story 2050, Drona, God Tussi Great Ho, Dostana and Chamku. A co-production of UTV Motion Pictures and Bhandarkar Entertainment Fashion would be releasing more than one and a half years after Bhandarkar's last film Traffic Signal (which recently fetched the director a National Award for the Best Director). It is filmmaker's most expensive project till date and is being shot across different countries.

Though most of these stories have turned out to be fabricated with hardly any substance to them, a sequel has been quietly planned and is already getting ready to go on floors. We are talking about King Khan's first released film, Deewana which had hit the theaters a decade and a half back. The film starred Rishi Kapoor in the male lead along with Divya Bharati. Director of films like Elaan, Ziddi, Salakhen and most recently Big Brother - Guddu Dhanoa - has conceptualised a sequel to the hit film and already roped in Adhyayan Suman to play the lead. Incidentally, Deewana had marked the debut of director Raj Kanwar while the film was produced by Guddu Dhanoa along with Lalit Kapoor. Confirms Adhyayan Suman who has left the Haal-e-Dil experience behind him within a week of it's release and is already looking forward to many more lucrative offers coming his way, "Yes, I am acting in the sequel to Deewana and am happy to be a part of Guddu Dhanoa cinema. I realize that at the end of the day, it is hardcore commercial cinema that runs and Gudduji's films have always provided wholesome entertainment." Doesn't it bother him that off late, Guddu Dhanoa hasn't quite enjoyed a great time at the box office? "Who doesn't go through a rough patch", counters Adhyayan, "I have caught on all the films that he has made over the years and know that he understands the pulse of the masses. Who makes the film a success? Masses right! If you make a good film which is not watched by audience, then what's the point? I for sure know that Gudduji would bounce back with the Deewana sequel." Hold on a second? Is it entirely possible to make a sequel to Deewana? Especially so because out of the three main leads in the film, Rishi Kapoor's character dies in the end while Divya Bharati is no more in real life! Winks Adhyayan, "That's the entire beauty of this sequel. Let me tease you a little - I would say that it is a sequel but not 'really a sequel' in entirety. Keep guessing!" While Adhyayan is indeed excited about being a part of this set up, it is yet not clear whether the man who played the most important character in the film, Shah Rukh Khan, would be playing a part in the sequel!
