Boy, Meg has really let herself go.Photo: Ryan Muir
When the man did appear, White looked very nearly dapper in his loose-fitting brown slacks and mirror- and rhinestone-spangled vest. As he's transformed himself from upholstery-shop boy to grand poobah (and most dedicated disciple) of the Cult of Jack White, it was interesting to see him channeling Liberace, his co-star John C. Reilly in Walk Hard, and seventies-era Elvis — and seeming less like the black-and-red-clad cartoon known to White Stripes fans. White knows what he's doing, and he wants you to know, too: He had a mike set up in front of a mirror so he could turn his back on the audience, admire his glorious self — and watch his fans, too.
Did the band rock? Sure. They're such pros that you could hardly tell their songs are neither as catchy or as elemental as even the weaker White Stripes tunes. The highlight wasn't a new song: It was “Blue Veins” (off their first album), one of the best Led Zeppelin covers ever written. At show's end, the crowd seemed satisfied but ready to move on, as if they had work the next morning. Of course, it was Friday night. —Miska Shubaly

Experts are pondering the relative weakness of the thumbs-up captured in this image.Photo: Getty Images
• Mike Madden notes that any candidate who felt he or she still had a chance "wouldn't have spent six hours dancing to Willie Colón on the back of a pickup truck" in Puerto Rico. The island trip was more of a "working vacation" for campaign staffers, who will soon be unemployed. [Salon]
• Indeed, Ben Smith reports that Clinton's advance staffers — those who "arrange events around the country" — are being told to converge on New York City and that "their roles on the campaign are ending." [Politico]
• David Corn wonders how seriously to take Harold Ickes's threat to possibly appeal the DNC's ruling on Michigan's delegates at the convention in August. If Clinton suspends her campaign this week, it won't really matter, but if they decide to fight on and "question the legitimacy of Obama's victory, there will be problems." Soon they'll have to decide for certain, as they can't continue to play it both ways. [CQ Politics]
• Adam Nagourney writes that Clinton, while certainly leaving the door open, wasn't as gung-ho about fighting the DNC's decision on Michigan's delegates as Harold Ickes. When asked how she would respond when Obama surpassed the new delegate threshold, likely this week, she said, "I just don’t think about it." [NYT]
• Andrew Sullivan writes that we don't know exactly how Clinton will react to the "inconvenient truth" of Obama crossing the threshold because "very few people have yet approached Her Majesty to ask what she actually intends to do." [Times UK]
• Peter Wallsten writes that many of Clinton's supporters would rather she didn't fight the DNC's decision, preferring the Democrats unite against John McCain sooner rather than later. [LAT]
• Jennifer Rubin thinks all Clinton has left to do is sit back for a couple of months, await some more YouTube clips that are damaging to Obama, and hope that the superdelegates come "scurrying back" to her. [Contentions/Commentary]
• James Fallows speculates that since the Clintons believe there is zero chance of Obama beating McCain in November, they'd have no qualms about staying in the race and fighting all the way to the convention. But since others don't see it that way, she'll soon be forced to "switch back to the 'I am so proud to be here with Barack Obama' mode" and campaign for her Democratic opponent, letting everyone else realize in the end how right she was. [Atlantic]
• Anne E. Kornblut reports that Clinton still plans, "with renewed vigor," to try to convince superdelegates of her case in the coming days, and that she didn't hint at a departure from the race. [WP]
• Chuck Todd and friends see evidence all around that Clinton may not leave the race "without a fight." At the same time, she now has the chance to "make bygones be bygones" and "quell the resentment brewing among some of her ardent female supporters." They wonder when she might do so, and what she will say when she does. [First Read/MSNBC]

Jeremy was at BEA for his book, Hardest (Working) Man in Show Business, now in paperback, which "didn't get a single bad review," and, he frequently reminded us, is a best seller. "Call me anything on the planet but you have to add on 'and … a best-selling author,'" he said, insisting it'll be in his obituary. "'He was this, this, this, this, a lot of dick jokes, now he's really stiff, and best-selling author.'"
That epithet was so important to him that he didn't do promotions in Larry Flynt's shops, which don't track sales. "I've gotta say this, publishing's a very hard business to understand, even more than adult movies. Porn was famous years ago for not keeping accurate accounts of how tickets are selling. This reminds you of that. You can only tell how a book is doing by comparison to others." He and Jenna Jamison have a friendly book-selling rivalry. "She beat me in America, but I beat her in Europe and Asia and Scandinavia," and this despite the fact he feels he got shafted on his co-writer. "She gets Neil Strauss, and I get Eric Spitznagel. He got a lot of stuff wrong. We were delayed by one year, the things he got wrong."
Jeremy was awed by the sales of fellow Harper author John Grogan's Marley and Me. We wondered aloud what the coming sequel will be about, as Marley, the bad dog in question, is put to sleep at the end of the book (instead of getting expensive surgery). Jeremy hadn't read that far, but the revelation perturbed him. He suggested the sequel be titled Marley's Back, and He's Pissed. "I didn't know that!" he said of Grogan's ending. "That cocksucking piece of shit! And best-selling author. He earned that fair and square." —Boris Kachka
Brooklyn residents totally booed Marty Markowitz the other night at BAM when he mentioned the upcoming Real World: Brooklyn (and then they inexplicably cheered for walking rent-destabilizers Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard — whatever), according to "Page Six." But they may as well get used to it: MTV has officially announced that the cast will be living in the Belltel lofts, in downtown Brooklyn, even though the New York Times warned them that the prevalence of check-cashing places and fried food means it could be a little ghetto. But despite its proximity to the "real world," as Belltell owner David Bistricer boasts, this is not exactly the kind of apartment indigenous to the area: The 6,000-square-foot, two-story penthouse has ten-foot windows, five bedrooms, bamboo flooring, two private terraces, and a big roof deck, and the Daily News assures us a Jacuzzi is "on the way" so requisite drunken hot-tub hookups will not be compromised. But don't be too jealous: As you can see in the video above, the place was clearly decorated by the designers from the Clarissa Explains It All era. Plus, they still have to deal with Time Warner Cable. Mwahahahaha.

Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III
Official Release Date: June 10
The Verdict: Upset by Wayne's recent, purportedly taken-out-of-context comments about mix-tape D.J.'s ("Fuck you if you're a mix-tape D.J."), mix-tape D.J.'s leaked his new album on Friday night. So, after multiple hype-ratcheting do-overs and delays, is Carter III the epochal, world-changing rap event we've all been promised? Yeah, basically. Based on a weekend of nonstop listening, we're quite prepared to declare it totally, unequivocally awesome. We didn't love either of the lead singles ("Lollipop" and "Got Money"), but, happily, it's otherwise stinker-free — a pretty even balance of dark, smart epics to please the blogosphere ("Misunderstood," "Let the Beat Build," "Shoot Me Down") and radio-ready hits-in-waiting ("Mr. Carter," "Tie My Hands," "Comfortable"). Good luck trying to be disappointed!
Steve Bing, whose colorful private life includes fathering a child out of wedlock with the actress Elizabeth Hurley and suing the billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian for invasion of privacy, alleging that private investigators for Kerkorian swiped Bing's dental floss out of his trash in a successful effort to prove that Bing's DNA matched that of a child delivered by Kerkorian's ex-wife, the former tennis pro Lisa Bonder.
Now. There isn't any proof that Bill's been engaging in his usual sexual escapades since he left the White House. But he's certainly been associating with colorful characters, and clearly not giving a shit about (or even noticing) the appearance of impropriety. Ron Burkle's his best bud, why shouldn't he fly around on "Air Fuck One" with various young models and NYU students?
ANYWAY the problem is that Clinton's "counselor," or his top aide, or his "butt boy," is this guy Doug Band, who is quite good at making sure Clinton gets to work on time but really not very good at keeping him away from bad influences.
The story (written by Todd Purdum, husband to former Clinton press secretary DeeDee Myers), also lists nearly every woman Clinton has been associated with since he left office, from Gina Gershon to that Canadian parliament member to some lady on an elevator. Naturally, Clinton's office wasn't too happy with the piece.
(Oddly, Radar has not mentioned this story!)

• On Saturday, the Rules Committee of the Democratic National Committee agreed to seat delegates from Florida and Michigan, but give them only half a vote each. In Florida, Clinton gained 19 delegate votes over Obama. In Michigan, she walked away with 69 delegates (34.5 votes) in Michigan. Based on exit polls and absentee voting, they also made a determination to give Obama 59 delegates, since he wasn't on the ballot, handing him 29.5 delegate votes. At the end of the day on Saturday, Clinton gained only 24 full delegates. [NYT]
• On Sunday, Clinton walked away with a huge victory in Puerto Rico, trouncing Obama two-to-one. But the turnout on the island was low, and the 21 delegates she won over Obama weren't enough to change the stakes. [AP]
• Meanwhile, if things weren't cloudy enough on the political front, the Clinton family was attacked on a personal level. A scathing article about Bill Clinton from the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair appeared online, including unconfirmed rumors that the former president may still be philandering, and accusations that his raucous personality cost Hillary much-needed support from Senator Ted Kennedy and others. [VF]
• After Puerto Rico and the DNC Rules Committee meeting, the numbers were left at 1,915 delegates in the Clinton camp, and 2,070 for Obama. With the new tally of total delegates, the magic number needed to secure the nomination is now 2,118. Obama is 48 away. After tomorrow's primaries in South Dakota and Montana, where a total of 31 delegates are up for grabs, Obama is expected to announce more superdelegates and claim he has clinched the nomination. [NYDN]
• The Clinton camp issues an aggressive rebuttal to the Vanity Fair article and attacks writer Todd Purdum and his wife, former Clinton aide Dee Dee Myers: "Purdum's disclosure of [his marriage] in the piece does not, as Vanity Fair apparently concluded, remove the obvious conflict of interest," said a memo from Clinton spokesman Jay Carson. "It's a conflict that would likely not be contemplated at more reputable publications, especially considering that, as a result of this relationship, at least one source's anonymity was revealed to others." Purdum responded today by appearing on the Today show and pointing out that though the memo was harsh, it did not claim that anything in the article was false. [Politico]
• A somewhat hilarious, if ugly and honest, tirade by a Hillary volunteer shows up on YouTube. [YouTube]

• Former Iowa governor and Clinton national co-chairman Tom Vilsack, one of Clinton's biggest supporters and an oft-mentioned VP candidate for her ticket, tells the AP: "It does appear to be pretty clear that Senator Obama is going to be the nominee. After Tuesday's contests, she needs to acknowledge that he's going to be the nominee and quickly get behind him." [Time]
• Going into tomorrow's Montana and South Dakota primaries, Clinton is pondering whether to protest the DNC Rules Committee ruling as a last-ditch effort to stay in the race. [Political Punch/ABC]

We'd say "stay tuned," but that would imply that any cable news outfit was covering anything else these days.
O'Neal got busted by narcotics cops on Clinton Street between Grand and East Broadway—hardly a bad neighborhood. The cops just happened to be doing a drug sweep, and she got swept. Terrible timing.
This is why people have connections, call their dealers, and have their drugs delivered to them safely. And for celebrities who are veteran coke champs, one would expect a ton of numbers on speed dial precisely to avoid the need to trot around the streets at 7:30 p.m. in search of crack.
Our theory: she really was committed to getting sober, and had thrown out all of her drug dealers' numbers. In fact, this could all be a blessing in disguise for her; she told cops, "Today was the first time I was relapsing, but you guys saved me!" Sweet!
Then she tried to say she was researching a part, and begged to be let off. That one didn't go over as well.
Even assuming that she was going to buy drugs no matter what, the actress made two serious mistakes that you can learn from. The first was buying crack in the first place. In New York, the Rockefeller drug laws set harsh mandatory minimum sentences for possession of just five grams of crack—a standard that used to be 100 times lower than that of powder cocaine, though the disparity has been closed somewhat. Still: legally speaking, you are always safer buying powder in New York.
Second, she should never have engaged the police in the lying conversation that she did. She was caught up in a sweep; they weren't going to let her go no matter what. Saying "Do you know who I am?" and "I'm researching a part" is simply foolish, because together they're an acknowledgment that she did, in fact, buy drugs. Better to say nothing and let your lawyer sort it out later. Scientific studies show that cops can't even identify intoxicated people accurately, never mind spying contraband from across the street; deny, deny, deny. Legally speaking.
In any case, those of you who are happy and well-adjusted drug users would presumably not be so stupid as to put yourself in a position to be arrested on Clinton St. in broad daylight. Those of you with serious problems would, which is all for the better. And Tatum O'Neal was prevented from returning to crack smoking, which is certainly worth a night in jail. It's a happy story, really!
Of course, the NYPD was supposed to have nipped this whole problem in the bud a century ago, according to this NYT story from 1908:
AP - Yves Saint Laurent, one of the most influential and enduring designers of the 20th century, empowered women by reinventing pants as a sleek, elegant staple of the female wardrobe.

And then! She actually busted out the oft-used Winona Ryder Defense:

Sigh. We hate to keep harping on this, but at her age, Tatum should really know by now that that line only works in Los Angeles.

In October 2006, Saint Laurent slipped and fell outside a Paris restaurant during Fashion Week, suffering slight scratches but reminding fans of the perennially fragile designer's advancing age.In 1957, the Algerian-born Saint Laurent became the head designer of Christian Dior, making the line famous for his trapeze silhouette. Saint Laurent sold the rights to his company to Gucci Group in 1999 and retired in 2002.
