Zimbabwe opposition agrees to runoff

Tsvangirai announced that the MDC will participate in a presidential runoff election, and said that he would return to his country in the next two days. Tsvangirai, who is threatened by a treason charge in Zimbabwe, has been outside the country after the presidential and parliamentary elections on 29 March to increase international pressure on incumbent President Robert Mugabe to step down after an apparent MDC victory. Tsvangirai stated that a runoff election has to be held on 23 May, referring to Zimbabwean law which stipulates that a second round has to be held within 21 days of the first round results being published.
